In the class of 2019, Texas A&M came close to landing four-star offensive tackle Javonne Shepherd from Houston North Forest.
Though Shepherd made a somewhat early commitment to Texas, he continued to stay in touch with the Aggie staff and even the Longhorns were concerned he could flip to the Maroon and White.
After not inking during the Early Signing Period, Shepherd made his final announcement on Signing Day in February and decided to stick with his pledge and sign with Texas.
However, during the fall semester this past year, Shepherd decided he was going to transfer from the school. He looked into heading to another four-year institution, but was forced to go the junior college route.
Now enrolled at Butler C.C. in Kansas, Shepherd is expected to be a class of 2021 recruit and have three years of eligibility remaining at his new school of choice. Colleges want to see him in action at his new home and, should he start off the season well, he should see an offer list that looks similar to what he had in high school.
Texas A&M is one of the schools keeping a close eye on Shepherd as, if he would have been able to transfer to another four-year school, he would have ended up in College Station this spring. It still seems likely that he ends up in Aggieland after junior college.
One concerning issue for Shepherd in high school was his weight. At The Opening Finals prior to his senior season, Shepherd weighed in over 350 pounds.
While he worked hard that summer and the next season to lose weight, he was still bigger than he would have liked even when he arrived in Austin.
Now, though, Shepherd has made an incredible transformation. On Tuesday, the 6-foot-6 offensive tackle said he was down to 290 pounds. And, for those that doubted him, he proved pictures that seem to back it up.
Needless to say, if Shepherd does end up at A&M, the Aggies will be getting a player that is dedicated to getting better and motivated to work out.
