New Delhi: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, all the focus has been on boosting immunity and making lifestyle changes that will reduce the risk of contraction of the virus, and complications or severe symptoms in case someone develops the COVID-19 disease. While an immunity-boosting diet has been touted as an effective measure to keep the risk of severe coronavirus infection at bay, experts have also suggested that certain factors such as obesity can have a direct impact in increasing one's risk of COVID-19.
Among the many measures recommended by the Health Ministry, use of chyavanprash, herbal teas, and other ayurvedic remedies have been emphasised on in post-COVID care, as well as to boost immunity against the virus. One such spice and the home remedy used for varies ailments is black pepper.
Black pepper has been used as a spice in India and abroad for the longest time. However, in India, black pepper powder, or crushed black peppercorns have been used as a home remedy, especially in the winters when cold, congestion, cough, and similar health issues are common. Black pepper is also a common ingredient in Kadhas, which are concoctions made with several ingredients and known to boost immunity.
Black pepper tea can help in boosting immunity as it consists of anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It can soothe down a sore throat, reduce congestion, and also helps reduce inflammation in the body that helps reduce severe symptoms of an infection.
While black pepper and black pepper tea are commonly consumed with the sole intention of treating an infection or preventing it, black pepper tea can also have a significant role to play in accelerating weight loss.
Boosts metabolism: Black pepper contains piperine, a compound known to boost metabolism. A good metabolism is key in weight loss, as it refers to the speed at which the body burns the food for energy, and ensures that the food you consume is used for activities, instead of being stored in the body as fat.
Makes you feel fuller: Some studies have shown that eating a spicy meal can make you feel fuller and stay satiated for longer. Since black pepper can make any food hot because of its spicy nature, it can help curb appetite and accelerate weight loss.
Rich in antioxidants:Black pepper tea or black pepper, in general, is rich in antioxidants. When the body is detoxified, all body functions are performed with full efficiency, which can help in weight loss.
