Updated Academy Of Nutrition And Dietetics Position Paper Confirms Safety And Benefits Of Low-Calorie Sweeteners
Posted: May 30, 2012 at 3:20 am
ATLANTA, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Consumers can safely enjoy a range of sweeteners, both full-calorie and low-calorie ones, as part of a healthy diet guided by current nutrition recommendations, according to a newly updated position paper by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association). The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (the Academy) is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.
In the "Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Use of Nutritive and Nonnutritive Sweeteners," published in the May issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Academy concludes: "It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that consumers can safely enjoy a range of nutritive sweeteners and nonnutritive sweeteners when consumed within an eating plan that is guided by current federal nutrition recommendations, such as the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Dietary Reference Intakes, as well as individual health goals and personal preference."
According to the position paper, greater consumption of foods and beverages with added sugars is associated with higher calorie intake, yet lower diet quality. The Academy recommends limiting added sugar and states that nonnutritive (low-calorie) sweeteners are a safe way to restrict calories in the diet. The position paper details and supports the safety and benefits of acesulfame potassium, aspartame, monk fruit, neotame, polyols, saccharin, stevia and sucralose as sweeteners. On the topic of taste, the Academy offered that "liking of sweet taste is innate" and that "preference for sweet taste may be genetic," rather than due to the consumption of low-calorie sweeteners, as some have alleged.
The Academy offers suggestions for healthfully consuming nutritive and non-nutritive sweeteners, including:

Mediterranean diet is definitively linked to quality of life
Posted: May 30, 2012 at 3:20 am
ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) For years the Mediterranean diet has been associated with a lesser chance of illness and increased well-being. A new study has now linked it to mental and physical health too.
The Mediterranean diet, which is characterised by the consumption of fruit, vegetables, pulses (beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils etc.) , fish, olive oil and nuts, has been proven to be beneficial to the health in terms of a lesser chance of chronic illness and a lower mortality rate.
A new study headed by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Navarra took the next step and analysed the influence of the Mediterranean diet on the quality of life of a sample of more than 11,000 university students over a period of four years.
"The progressive aging of the population in developed countries makes it even more interesting to find out those factors that can increase quality of life and the health of the population," as explained by Patricia Henrquez Snchez, researcher at the centre in the Canary Islands and lead author of the study.
Dietary intake data was taken at the beginning of the study and self-perceived quality of life was measured after the four year monitoring period. In order to ascertain whether the Mediterranean diet was followed, consumption of vegetables, pulses, fruit, nuts, cereals and fish was positively valued whereas consumption of meat, diary products and alcohol was negatively valued.
Published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the results reveal that those who stick more to the Mediterranean diet score higher on the quality of life questionnaire in terms of physical and mental well-being. This link is even stronger in terms of physical quality of life.
The Mediterranean Pyramid
Henrquez states that "the Mediterranean diet is an important factor associated with better quality of life and can be considered as a healthy food model." Its food pyramid combines food to be eaten daily, weekly and occasionally.
Main meals should never lack three basic elements: cereals, fruit and vegetables and dairy products. Furthermore, it must include a daily intake of 1.5 and 2 litres of water. Olive oil constitutes the main source of fat for its nutritional quality and moderate consumption of wine and other fermented beverages is recommended.
Furthermore, fish, lean meat and eggs are sources of high quality animal protein. Fish and seafood are also sources of healthy fats.

Stay fit and fabulous over forty

28 MAY 2012
Andie Macdowell, Salma Hayek, and Naomi Watts are just three of the beauties we've seen working it at Cannes 2012.
And they are all looking in fantastic shape for their forty-plus years.
The good news is that whilst you can't stop the ageing process, you can slow down, halt and even improve some of the physiological changes that take place through regular exercise.
Keeping healthy and active through regular exercise and eating sensibly is important at any age. As we hit our 40's and beyond it becomes vital to our well-being to maintain regular exercise and daily activity.
Sohere aretop tips for staying fit and fabulous over forty! 1. Set yourself a goal Having a vague notion of wanting to stay fit is unlikely to be enough to keep you focused. Setting a specific goal can be great for motivation and gives a purpose to each training session. It can be as simple as improving your distance over a given time on an exercise bike, rowing machine or treadmill in the gym, or taking part in a more ambitious event such as a 5 or 10km run.
There are plenty of fitness charity events to take part in too such as Race for Life, The Moonwalk, and The Three Peaks Challenge. Taking part in a big organised event can offer a huge incentive and the camaraderie and sense of achievement afterwards will do wonders for your social life and self-esteem!
2. Ditch the diet A recent survey showed the average woman has been on 61 diets by the age of 45.
Dietsdon't do your metabolism any favours, and result in yo-yo weight gain and loss. The key to successful weight management is adopting a healthy eating plan and sticking with it for life! A well balanced diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables, healthy fats, proteins, calcium rich foods and water.

Instead of dieting, try these 3 things
Posted: May 29, 2012 at 1:16 pm
Ive written about one of the most common mistakes people make when theyre trying to lose fat, by doing slow and long-distance cardio. I discussed the most effective type of cardio that burns more fat. Another common mistake I see people make involves nutrition.
That biggest mistake is dieting! Thats rightdieting is a big mistake.
People have tried one, two, or more diets in their attempt to lose weight. If diets work, why do people have to try more than one?
Diets dont work because psychologically, you start off with a negative action. When you think dieting, you start thinking about the food you have to give up, eating what you really dont like, etc. It doesnt sound motivating at all.
Diets can be too restrictive or difficult to follow. Depending on the diet, some foods are forbidden, and the ones that are not might be foods you dont like.
Diets dictate the exact amount of food you should eat, how many calories, what time you should eat, the percentage of calories coming from carbs, protein and fat, etc.
Diets are generally not practical for everyday life. Imagine having to weigh, measure and calculate everything you put in your mouth. If you are a professional athlete who needs your body to be at optimal levels, then yes, you should be that detailed. However, being fastidious is not practical if you dont rely on your body to earn a living.
The number one thing that will help you in your nutrition goals is to focus on adopting one healthy eating habit at a time. Far too often, people try to change too many habits at one time, which is a recipe for failure because behavioral changes take time to occur. Adopt one habit and be consistent in observing it. Once you become consistent, add another to work on, and so on.
Here are three simple healthy eating habits to get you on the right track for maximum fat loss.
1. Take a multivitamin and a fish oil supplement.

‘Warrior’ diet and exercise program uses language of combat to show how to get fit
Posted: May 29, 2012 at 1:15 pm
Warrior Cardio by Martin Rooney
Martin Rooneys 12-week diet and exercise program uses the language of combat and models that look like ultimate fighters to show you how to get that fierce, toned-up look, or at least a trimmer you. According to Rooney, the most effective way to burn fat and build muscle is interval training: sprints, free-weight circuits and exercises using your own body weight, such as push-ups interspersed with claps. His program also includes a nutritional plan focused on a healthful balance of protein, vegetables, fruit and whole grains, complete with recipes. If you are intrigued by the science behind his plan, Rooney offers a primer on aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise and adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, a molecule central to metabolism. For those more interested in just working out, there are lots of pictures. Each exercise from the mini plyo hop (small, quick hops performed in a pattern similar to hopscotch) to the Zercher lunge (performed with a barbell in the crooks of your elbows) is broken down and demonstrated by some very buff guys. The program is geared toward men, but that doesnt mean women cant unearth their inner warriors just as well.

Beyonce Atlantic City Beyonce Diet Programs - Isn't amazing how all of the celebrities you see have a celebrity diet plan for weight loss to maintain their weight. Some of them are shapely and healthy looking, and look good on camera. Others look like they haven't eaten in weeks, like they just got back from the famine in Ethiopia for a few weeks. Like they had been starving themselves to lose weight, and that is probably what they have been doing. You see it in all the tabloids, this person lost 100 pounds again, this one gained 100 pounds, and then lost 150 pounds. Some are not as dramatic; this one lost 40 pounds and is a television spokesperson, because the previous celebrity diet spokesperson gained the weight back. The fact is they may be starving themselves to lose weight, fasting like they are going through a famine.
Celebrities make dieting look so easy, don't they? One month they're on the cover of US Weekly for gaining too much weight and the next they're headlining the "sexiest beach bods" story. It is true that seriously overweight people can lose large amounts of fat in a quick amount of time, because of the large fat content in their cells. But those that are only a few pounds overweight, losing 40 pounds in a month, is not only starvation, it is malnutrition and can have serious side effects. Our body weight can fluctuate day to day and the best diets take the weight off gradually, the way it came on.
Researches indicate that individuals who indulge in a weight loss program by taking prepared meals end up losing an additional 31% weight as against those who cook their own meals. With help, losing weight is made easier and at times much faster as against doing it on your own.Diet delivery is gaining popularity in a big way as it is fairly affordable by even the common man, roughly around $20 a day with an increasing variety to choose from. A few of which include: Zone-compliant meal, low carbs plan, veggie meals, and gourmet too.

With the rapidly increasing epidemic of obesity and increasing BMI levels, there is an array of products and diet plan to aid in combating obesity. Celebrity slim diet, the basic idea is to educate people and not to depict food as an enemy. Like a lot of famous diets in Hollywood, if your body thinks you are starving, it is going to hold on to every calorie you take in to keep you from starving to death instead of burning them for energy. When you follow a properly balanced weight loss diet, your metabolism will hardly notice the decrease in calories and continue to burn fat it doesn't need to store. This is a more long-term weight loss strategy.
Celebrities do not have secrets about dieting. They are normal people like the rest of us but, unlike most of us, they have people working for them such as diet advisors and personal trainers. Celebrity diets involve a level of commitment and dedication which we struggle with. The best celebrity diets involve eating sensibly and limiting our calorie intake. Having these factors in mind will allow you to have safe and easy weight loss that will provide you with short term and long term consistent results.

Drunk birds had one-too-many berries to blame
Posted: May 26, 2012 at 1:20 am
After overindulging in berries, flocks of cedar waxwings flew drunkenly to their doom. That's the conclusion of a new report in the Journal of Ornithology.
Cedar waxwings have evolved to live on a diet that averages 84 per cent fruit. But those evolutionary innovations backfired on several occasions between 2005 and 2007 when flocks of them died after crashing into windows and fences in broad daylight in the Los Angeles area.
Residents puzzled by the deaths sent the bodies to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory in San Bernardino. Necropsies performed by Hailu Kinde and colleagues at the lab showed the birds had been healthy when they gorged on berries from the Brazilian pepper tree, then died from ruptured livers or other traumas caused by the collisions.
Cedar waxwings have the most fruit-rich diet of all North American birds, and dining on overripe berries can leave them visibly tipsy. Their short intestines can process large volumes of fruit, and their large livers about 5 per cent of body mass can break down toxic ethanol before it causes serious damage.
Yet although earlier studies had found isolated birds that had died from collisions when flying drunk, no one had seen whole flocks careen to their doom.
Now Kinde and colleagues report that the downfall of the flocks came from eating too many berries. Lacking a crop the expandable pouch near the throat used to store food waxwings stow meals in a distensible oesophagus. "When the fruit stays in the oesophagus, it ferments and produces ethanol," says Kinde.
The waxwings had ingested so many berries that their large livers "could not keep up with the alcohol produced by the fermentation", with ethanol concentration as high as 1000 parts per million. By the time they finished stuffing themselves with berries, they were too drunk to fly safely.

Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center explores the apple industry
Posted: May 25, 2012 at 9:12 am
Not to upset the apple cart, but things are changing at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center.
The newest exhibit, "Getting to the Core: The Story of the Apple Industry in Fremont County," will blossom June 1 with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum, 612 Royal Gorge Blvd. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Museum.
"Some of the artifacts that we will have on display are ribbons from the Fruit Days, one is dated 1899; the traveling band competition trophy that started in 1973; a fruit-picking ladder and an apple-picking bag," said Archivist/Curator Lisa Studts.
Photo boards showcase the Fruit Day Festival that originated local festivals, including the May Day Festival, the Blossom Festival and Penrose's Apple Day Festival.
Assistant Archivist Sue Cochran said early-day miners played a key role in the formation of Fremont County's rich and long-standing apple industry.
"The miners that came out here went into the hills with very little prep time," she said. "They were living on dried-meat and biscuits -- their diets were horrible."
She said miners needed a way to get fresh fruits and vegetables into their diets, but canned goods were not available on the frontier, and there was not a railroad at that time in the area.
"There was a handful of guys that came along that said there's a buck or two to be made here, and they started growing the fruits and vegetables for the purpose of supplementing the miners' diets," Cochran said. "The big surprise was that the soil here was just really, really good for that."
The exhibit will be up for about two years. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and admission is free. For more information, call 269-9036.
