Does eating a healthy diet benefit both you and the planet as a whole? If you answered yes, you're correct. And if you answered no, you're also correct.According to a thought-provoking study published last week in Nutrition Journal,eating a healthy diet is good for the planet in some ways, but not necessarily others.
A trio of scientists led by Zach Conrad, Ph.D., assistant professor of nutrition in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Sciences at William & Mary, set out to identify the links between diet patterns and environmental sustainability. (Related: 100 Unhealthiest Foods on the Planet.)
Using nationally representative data on the diets of 50,000 Americans of all ages and food waste in the U.S., plus other research, the study authors found that healthier diets do, in fact, use less land resources.
However, they also found that Americans have a tendency to waste a portion of the foods they buy. In fact, consumed food accounts for a mere 56 to 74 percent of resources used, while the remaining resources go, literally, to waste.
"Healthier diets tend to have more fruits and vegetables, which don't require much land but do require a lot of other agricultural resources including irrigation water and pesticides," Conrad explained to William & Mary's blog. "And fruits and vegetables are often more perishable than other foods, which means they are wasted in higher amounts."
This is not a good thing for the environment given how many resources go into making food, said the study's co-authors, Nicole Tichenor Blackstone, a member of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University, and Eric Roy of the University of Vermont.
"It's not just the food itself that is being wasted, it's all the associated agricultural resources that went into making that food," Roy told William & Mary.
In short, the research found that eating more healthy foods while also making sure you're eating, reusing, or composting the food you buy is key for keeping yourself and the planet in good shape.
Luckily,200 popular grocery stores have recently joined together to help reduce food waste. A recent study by an international team of researchers using data from 399,000 patients found that people with obesity who contracted coronavirus were 113 percent more likely than people of healthy weight to end up in hospital, 74 percent more likely to be admitted to intensive care, and 48 percent more likely to die.
Why? Well, the why centres around the damaging effect of raised blood glucose on endothelial cells and it gets complicated.
The most important thing is not to understand the complex metabolic and physiological pathways involved, but simply to help people to lose weight, and this is where Dr. David Unwin comes in.
For years, this family doctor from Southport, in northwest England, has believed, as I do, that the main driver of weight gain, eventually leading on to type 2 diabetes, is a high-carbohydrate diet. That means consuming too much pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, processed sugar, and so on, and not enough red meat, olive oil, butter, eggs, and the like.
This, of course, is exactly the opposite of what we have been told for decades by the experts who demonise fat and promote carbohydrates. We have the eat-well plate, and the food pyramid, and hundreds of thousands of dieticians around the world, all promoting carbohydrates as the healthy option.
Dutifully following this advice, the entire population of the Western world has become fatter, and fatter and fatter. And more and more unhealthy. By the way, this is not a coincidence; it is cause and effect.
But getting back to Dr. Unwin years ago, he despaired of ever getting any of his patients to lose weight. It was so disheartening, he furtively studied his pension plan and dreamed of retirement. Then, one day, a patient came in to his surgery who had lost a lot of weight and kept it off.
At first, this woman was reluctant to say how she had done it, as she feared the inevitable criticism. In the end, however, she confessed to Dr. Unwin that she had achieved it by eating a low-carbohydrate diet. In Dr. Unwins own words:
I was interested to find out how the patient had improved her diabetic control. She confessed she had ignored my advice and learnt a much better way to look after herself from the internet. I suppressed my wounded pride and looked at the low-carb forum on diabetes.co.uk. There were thousands of type 2 diabetics on there ignoring their doctors and getting great results ([but] now that is just not allowed).
The GP did not criticise his patient; instead, he was intrigued. Could this possibly be true? It went against everything he had been told about healthy eating, weight loss, and type 2 diabetes fat has twice the calories per gram as carbohydrates and suchlike. Eating fat, hed been programmed to believe, makes you fat, and then you develop diabetes and heart disease.
Dr. Unwin did more research, then made the decision to work with his patients, mainly those with diabetes, to see if a low-carbohydrate diet could be beneficial. Lo and behold, it was very beneficial. In fact, it was like a miracle cure.
In 2014, he published a paper on his results on a small number of patients. It stated:
It was observed that a low-carbohydrate diet achieved substantial weight loss in all patients and brought about normalisation of blood glucose control in 16 out of 18 patients. At the same time, plasma lipid profiles improved, and BP [blood pressure] fell, allowing discontinuation of antihypertensive therapy in some individuals
Conclusions: Based on our work so far, we can understand the reasons for the internet enthusiasm for a low-carbohydrate diet: the majority of patients lose weight rapidly and fairly easily [and,] predictably, the HbA1c levels are not far behind. Cholesterol levels, liver enzymes, and BP levels all improved. This approach is simple to implement and much appreciated by people with diabetes.
Now, he has published results of a much larger study, of nearly 200 patients over a six-year period, which has just been published in the British Medical Journals Nutrition, Prevention & Health.
Its main findings make an impressive case for the low-carb diet and how it can lead to people being much healthier and getting off lifelong medication:
46 percent drug-free Type 2 diabetes remission.
Significant improvements in weight, blood pressure, and lipid profiles.
93 percent remission of prediabetes.
Four individuals came off insulin altogether.
Total weight loss for the 199 participants was 1.6 metric ton.
50,885 annual savings in the practices diabetes-drug budget.
If every GP practice adopted the practice, the NHS could save c. 277 million (c.$350 million) a year
This paper will be attacked, of course, as there are massive financial interests involved here. The savings that the NHS could achieve would be dwarfed if the US, with its much higher drugs costs, adopted the policies: we could be looking at around $2 billion a year. Around the world, who knows, but it would be vast sums of money.
So, you can imagine the joy that this paper will be met with in pharmaceutical company boardrooms around the world. The words lead and balloon, spring to mind. Equally, the massive low-fat high-carb food manufacturers will be throwing their hands up in horror My bonus, my bonus! Nooooo! You can take all your low-carb yoghurts and
As for the rest of us, I can assure you that Dr. Unwin has only ever been interested in one thing: working out how to help people lose weight and control their diabetes. He has achieved this for his patients and is showing the rest of the world how to do the same.
Will his research now be taken up by the authorities around the world? Will we move away from promoting a high-carbohydrate diet? You have to be joking. There is far too much money to be lost by the companies who exert tight control over the world of medical research, and whose lobbyists swarm around politicians in rich countries.
Which is a damn shame, because more than ever in this endless Covid-19 pandemic, obesity represents a health crisis. This paper, and the tireless work by Dr Unwin, clearly tells us what we need to do now, urgently. If Boris Johnson is serious about his plan for the nation to get slimmer and fitter, he himself should go on a low-carb diet and extol its virtues.
Dr Unwins approach wont work instantly, and it wont work for everyone nothing ever does. However, it represents hope. It could save hundreds and thousands of lives. Perhaps more than any vaccine. His research should be shouted from the rooftops.

Now more than ever, the food industry is positioned to build on the trust and partnership of being on the shoppers side, helping them achieve their dietary goals of eating well to stay as healthy as possible, said Dr. Hilary Thesmar, who oversees food safety and quality programs at FMI, according to Supply Chain Dive.

Theres financial stress, theres emotional stress, and being able to deal with that as well as talk to professionals when you need it, is very important, she says. Staying on cancer treatment is the one thing that will help to cure your disease, and if you are so sad or so overwhelmed that that doesnt happen, then youre actually going to compromise your cancer treatment.

In terms of cancer, oftentimes patients feel that they dont have any control over any part of their life and thats not true, Dr. Sairah Ahmed, associate professor in the division of cancer medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, tells SurvivorNet.
Dr. Ahmed tells SurvivorNet that none of the gimmicky diets are useful for cancer-fighting. Instead, the goal is simply to consume nutritious foods. Im asked about keto diets, alkaline diets, no-sugar diets, she says. Often I will tell patients there is not any one diet that has a better potential to keep their cancer away. Ever since we saw the first look of Silambarasan TR in Susienthirans Easwaran, there has been so much talk about his physical transformation. His latest photoshoot pictures that have gone viral show that the actor has lost oodles of weight, and is looking fitter than ever before. He started his journey at 101kg and the actor now weighs 71kg, losing 30kg. Simbu started his fitness journey last November. In a candid chat with us, his friend Mahat Raghavendra and fitness trainer Sandeep Raj take us through Simbus physicaltransformation
How it all startedMahat was training under Sandeep Raj, a celebrity fitness trainer and even sported six-pack abs. When Simbu saw Mahats transformation, he wanted to begin training, too. Thats when he got introduced to Sandeep. We started last November, and at that time, Simbu weighed 101kg. Simbu didnt lose weight for films or just to prove a point. He wanted to do it for his fans and his loved ones, who stood by him during the tough times, says Sandeep.
Sandeep says that Simbu was 87kg in February. After the pandemic took over, he again started putting on weight. We then resumed our workouts regularly in June and he now weighs 71.1kg. He lived by the saying, If theres a will, there is a way. I was sceptical to train him as there were so many rumours doing the rounds. But once I met him and started working with him, I realised that he is a hardworking and dedicated person. He is now an example for many.

We investigate whether NEXT MEATS meatless karubi and harami make for a satisfying and delicious yakiniku dinner.
Many vegetarian and vegan eaters must be overjoyed to know that more and more plant-based options have become available in Tokyo eateries in recent years. With whole restaurants and convenience stores dedicated to meatless fare and even standard meat and fish-filled foods like burgers, sushi, and ramen being offered in vegetarian versions, its much easier than ever to go meat-free in Japan.
One new kind of meat substitute that was surprising to us is meatless yakiniku from startup company NEXT MEATS. Yakiniku literally means grilled meat in Japanese, so it sounds like it would be rather difficult to substitute real meat with a plant-based alternative. Luckily theres a Shibuya yakiniku shop that just started offering NEXT MEATS meatless yakiniku in-restaurant, so we had to go try it out. How does it compare to real yakiniku in flavor, satisfaction, and price? Lets investigate.
The restaurant we visited is the Shibuya Utagawamachi branch of Yakiniku Like. They offer the two kinds of meatless yakiniku that NEXT MEATS sells:harami (skirt steak) and karubi(short ribs). Both come in 50 gram portions for 290 (US$2.77) and 310 yen respectively, but right now, until the 31st, if you order one of the yakiniku sets, youll get a free sampling to try out.
We, however, were on a mission to eat meatless meat, so we had resolved not to eat any real meat on this visit. Our reasoning was that, if the NEXT Karubi and NEXT Harami really do resemble real yakiniku meat, then we should be able to say with confidence after a meal of it that felt like wed eaten yakiniku. And if not, well then you can safely conclude that it does not live up to expectations as a suitable meat substitute for yakinuku.
Yakiniku Like has customers place their orders using an iPad system, but it was actually kind of hard to find the meatless options. We had to go all the way to the third tab of the Campaign Menu, and then swipe to the left to see it. Were not sure if it was intentional or not, but it felt like they were making the meatless yakiniku a secret menu item.
Not knowing what the right amount to order would be, we started out by ordering three sets each of the NEXT Karubi and the NEXT Harami, plus a large size rice and an Oolong tea, which was pretty much everything we would order at yakiniku, just with meatless meat.
Then, before long, our NEXT Karubi and NEXT Harami arrived!
Naturally, when ordering regular yakiniku, the meat always comes raw so that you can grill it to perfection, but the meat substitute yakiniku looked like meat that was cooked already. When it arrived, the server told us which was which, but within minutes we had totally forgotten. But we had remembered to ask the server to show us the packaging so we could look at the ingredients, and it looked like theyre both made of the same things, so it probably didnt matter.
But.what were we supposed to do with this meatless meat? Its made of soybeans so it probably wouldnt have mattered whether we cooked them or not. Um, excuse medo we grill these? we asked the server, with visible confusion on our faces. Apparently the answer is yes, you do grill them, but only really to warm them up before eating them.
Alrighty then. We fired up the grill and gave it a whirl.
Actually, the process felt the same. It really seemed like we were cooking regular meat yakiniku, so we had to remind ourselves that it was meatless. That was kind of mysterious. The meat even got a nice char from the fire, so honestly, if we hadnt known it was plant-based meat, at this point we would never have realized.
But once it cooled and we took a good look at it, it was clear that it was neither pork nor beef. It didnt even look like chicken, really. If anything, it looked closest to the giant chunk of tuna that you can find in a tuna can sometimes.
Even so, no one around you is going to see you cooking it and notice that its vegan meat, so if youre worried about people laughing at you, dont be. It just looks like youre grilling meaty yakiniku like everyone else.
As for the flavor, both varieties had a salty-sweet flavor to them that didnt taste much like meat. Wondering what it would taste like with standard yakiniku sauces, we decided to dip it in and give it a taste
It tasted just like regular yakiniku!!
It was surprising how meaty it tasted. Charring it slightly to give it the fire-grilled flavor we know and love from yakiniku makes it even meatier. You dont get even a little bit of the soy flavor with the combination of grill and sauce.
It does lack the fattiness and oiliness of meat (naturally, since its made of soybeans), and it does tend to be a little bit crumbly, like ground meat, but the look, smell, and flavor are all very meaty. We really believe that if someone grilled it up for you without telling you it wasnt meat, you would never know.
By the way, once youve applied sauce to both the harami and the karubi its nearly impossible to tell them apart. It seems there really isnt much of a difference between the two at all.
Nevertheless, theres no doubt about the fact that this meat substitute was probably the best meat imitation that we have ever tasted. Flavor wise, it works as a good substitute for meat, and the satisfaction of cravings and the enjoyment of eating it got passing marks from us as well.
However, whether you feel full and satisfied after a meal of NEXT meat is a different story. Perhaps because its simply a mash of soybeans, we really did not feel full after eating it. Even though we ate a lot, we were hungry again pretty soon afterwards. You probably wont have to worry about indigestion or feeling a heavy stomach like you would from eating lots of fatty meat, but it doesnt carry the same satisfaction as meat does either.
Theres also one more problem: price. NEXT Karubi comes in 50 gram portions for 310 yen, and NEXT Harami for 290 yen for the same amount. Normal meat karubi is 220 yen for 50 grams, or 330 for 100, while harami is 310 yen and 520 yen respectively.
Surprisingly, the real karubi meat is actually cheaper, and 100 grams of real harami is also a better value than the NEXT meat, making real meat the overall more affordable kind of yakiniku, especially if you order a lot.
Still, though, if you are a vegetarian or a vegan or otherwise have a diet that excludes meat, and are craving a meaty flavor or something hearty, this might be a good option for you. Youre still getting the same yakiniku flavor and experience, so its almost like eating real yakiniku, and truly the price isntthatbad if a meatless diet is something thats necessary or important to you.
Starting on November 1, NEXT meat substitutes will be available at the Shinbashi main branch, the Shinjuku West Exit branch, the Akasaka-mitsuke branch, and the Ueno branch as well as the Shibuya Utagawa branch of Yakiniku Like, so if youre interested, definitely give it a try!
