Masaba Gupta reveals the pros of 16-hour fast and cons of Keto diet in dealing with PCOD – Hindustan Times
Posted: September 21, 2020 at 3:54 pm
If there is one major ailment that has taken the world of women by storm, it has to be Polycystic Ovarian Disease or PCOD which strikes mostly at an early age and makes a substantial number of young adults suffer including fashion designer Masaba Gupta. Currently making heads turn with her stellar performance in Netflix series Masaba Masaba, the ace designer shared health tips with fans on how to make PCOD vanish.
Taking to her Instagram handle, the diva answered on a question answer round with fans about how her daily 16-hour fast not only makes her feel great but also gives her more energy, more clarity and no acidity. My pcod etc has nearly vanished! (sic), she replied to a fan who had asked Are you doing the 16 hour fast everyday? How do you feel? (sic).
When another fan asked, How do you deal with PCOD? I have PCOD for 7 years now and it just gets worse, Masaba spilled some handy tips that also included the cons of Keto diet. She shared, Lose weight!! Its the best way! But pls do it in a safe & slow way. She added, Do not get on some crap fad diet especially Keto it messed my body up.
She concluded by advising, Speak to a nutritionist- eat ghar ka khaana. Workout 6 days a week. Stay happy. Bas (sic) and punctuated it with a red heart emoji.
Three main symptoms of PCOD in women include high androgen levels, irregular periods, and cysts in the ovaries. To confirm the diagnosis, doctors conduct a pelvic exam, blood tests and ultrasound as it is a condition developed by the imbalance of hormones.
While there is no permanent cure for PCOD, the symptoms can be managed with the intake of right diet of limiting carbohydrates, maintaining a healthy weight and with adequate exercise. Blood sugar levels can be lowered with exercise and since weight loss can reduce insulin and androgen levels, it may restore ovulation and can even help with infertility. However, as Masaba warned no Keto and weight loss only in a safe slow way.

Eczema treatment: Eliminating this from your diet may lead to skin improvements – Express
Posted: September 21, 2020 at 3:54 pm
Eczema is a general term for itchy, dry skin conditions and the most common is atopic eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. According to the NHS, atopic eczema causes the skin to become itchy, dry, cracked and sore. "Some people only have small patches of dry skin, but others may experience widespread inflamed skin all over the body," explains the health body.
White flour products give a lighter texture to muffins, cakes and cookies and a flakier crust to pies and pastries, according to medical website LiveStrong.
"Also called refined flour, white flour has had many of its nutrients and most of its fibre removed during processing, the health body said.
The survey also found that people reported improvements in their skin when excluding gluten and nightshades.
Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are all common nightshades.
"It may not be healthy to cut these foods from your diet, especially in young children who need the calcium, calories and protein from these foods," says the health body.
As it explains, if a GP suspects a food allergy, you may be referred to a dietitian (a specialist in diet and nutrition).
They can help to work out a way to avoid the food you're allergic to while ensuring you still get all the nutrition you need.
Alternatively, you may be referred to a hospital specialist, such as an immunologist, dermatologist or paediatrician, adds the NHS.

Keto diet could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease – India New England
Posted: September 21, 2020 at 3:54 pm
Hyderabad Eating healthy, low calorie food could help fight the fungi in the gut and thus reduce the risk of dementia among senior citizens, doctors said, citing a new study done in the US that revealed that the diet has a direct connection with Alzheimers disease.
The findings of the recent study by scientists at the Wake Forest School of Medicine are significant as health experts are looking at possible therapies to address the grave problem.
The Alzheimers Association, a global body for dementia, reported that mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is witnessed among at least 15-20 per cent people aged over 65 years, which impacts the ability to think and can lead to Alzheimers disease.
The new research suggests that ketogenic diet alters the bacterial communities in the human gut and helps reduce biomarkers of Alzheimers disease among those suffering from MCI.
In our conservative society, dementia often impacts social and family relations, including reduction in work hours, loss of employment, relationships ending, and even the need to relocate or change living arrangements arises. It is often noticed that such problems lead victims to becoming unwanted in the family and social setting. Possible solutions to prevent this problem are being researched for decades, and this new study provides a glimpse of hope, said Dr Simanchal Mishra, Senior Consultant Neuro Physician, Medicover Hospitals.
There is now a possible preventive mechanism through which the risk of Alzheimers can be reduced to a great extent, and the suggested solution appears to be an easily manageable one, he added.
Alzheimers is an irreversible dementia. There are many other causes of dementia which are preventable or reversible. Early diagnosis and treatment of dementia can help make the disease reversible. Literacy/ knowledge of the ailment is one of the most important factors in preventing Alzheimers disease, said Dr M.K. Singh, Senior Consultant Neurologist, Continental Hospitals.
While quitting smoking and alcohol, eating healthy diet, exercising for at least 150 minutes a week are suggested as steps to prevent Alzheimers disease, the new research reveals that lower calories food forces a human body to conserve energy, and this leads to drop in body temperature, and this too helps in preventing dementia. Additionally, reading, writing, learning new languages and/or musical instruments, maintaining an active social life are highly recommended to ensure Alzheimers is kept at bay, he said.
Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, which are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, also increase the risk of developing Alzheimers among ageing population. Hence, in addition to leading an active life, cutting down on calories in food is surely a great way to stay happy and remember everything till the end of life. (IANS)

A Bipartisan Bill Would Regulate Hemp CBD As A Dietary Supplement – The Fresh Toast
Posted: September 21, 2020 at 3:54 pm
Last week, Oregon Representative Kurt Schrader (D) and Virginia Representative Morgan Griffith (R) introducedThe Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2020(H.R. 8179). If enacted in its current form, H.R. 8179 would legalize the manufacture, sale and marketing of hemp, hemp-derived cannabidiol and other hemp extracts (collectively referred to as Hemp Products) as dietary supplements under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FDCA).
This means that these products would be exempt from the FDCAs Drug Exclusion Rule, which, as we previously discussed, currently prevents the sale and marketing of any substance that has been approved or investigated by the FDA as a new drug as a conventional food or dietary supplement In July 2018, the FDA approved CBD as a drug ingredient inEpidiolex.
To be compliant with the FDCA, these Hemp Products would need to meet the existing regulatory framework imposed on dietary supplements. This comprehensive regulatory framework mandates, in part, that these products be safe as well as properly labeled and marketed.
Because Hemp Products were not sold and marketed in the U.S. as dietary supplements or conventional foods before October 15, 1994, they would be deemed new dietary ingredients or NDIs.
Pursuant to Section 413 of the FDCA, if a dietary supplement contains an NDI, its manufacturer and distributor must ensure that the NDI is adequately substantiated as being safe and must notify the FDA about that ingredientpriorto marketing.
RELATED: FDA Guidance On Cannabis Research: A Glimpse Of Whats To Come For CBD Products?
To meet this standard, manufacturers and distributor of Hemp Products would have to provide the FDA with information that is the basis on which they have concluded that their Hemp Products are reasonably expected to be safe under the conditions recommended or suggested in the labeling.
If the manufacturers or distributors were to receive a no-objection letter from the FDA, or no response at all, they could lawfully market their Hemp Products after the 75-day notification period is over, assuming there is in fact a history of use or other evidence of safety establishing that the Hemp Products, when used under the conditions recommended or suggested in the labeling, are reasonably expected to be safe.
When it comes to labeling requirements, manufacturers and distributors of Hemp Products would need to ensure their product packaging contains specificlabeling elements, such as an identity statement and a nutrition facts panel and containno medical claimsabout the therapeutic values of their products. Inclusion of medical claims would suggest that the Hemp Products intended use is that of a drug, and thus, would violate the FDCA and warrantFDA and Federal Trade Commission(FTC) enforcement actions.

In sum, the enactment of H.R. 8179 would help alleviate regulatory uncertainties surrounding the legality of Hemp Products, which have hindered market opportunities for hemp farmers and businesses. In addition, the passage of this bipartisan bill would help raise the quality and safety of Hemp Products, and thus, protect consumers.
If, like aconsensusof hemp stakeholders, you support H.R. 8129, you should contact your representatives and urge them to co-sponsor this bill. For automatically generated messages, visit the U.S. Hemp Rountables onlineAction Center.

Is more volatility on tap for stocks? Following a three-week losing streak, the longest in about a year, all eyes are on the market. The three major U.S. stock indexes have struggled for the last few weeks as the titans of tech, which have fueled the charge forward from COVID-induced lows, came under pressure due to overheated valuations, with market watchers waiting to see how renewed lockdown fears will come into play. So, whats the bottom line for investors? Even though uncertainty remains as Wall Street gears up for the fourth quarter, the pros are pounding the table on a select few names, noting that these tickers boast strong long-term growth narratives.Bearing this in mind, our focus shifted to two penny stocks backed by investment firm Cantor. Major gains could be in store, as the firms analysts believe these tickers trading for less than $5 per share could climb all the way to $11.These plays are known for being risky, so we turned to TipRanks database. Using the platform, we got the full scoop, to find out why both are so compelling even with the risk involved.Rockwell Medical (RMTI)With the goal of transforming iron deficiency and anemia management in a wide variety of therapeutic areas, Rockwell Medical works to improve the lives of patients all over the world. Given the strength of its technology and its $1.22 share price, Cantor thinks that now is the time to snap up shares.Firm analyst Brandon Folkes notes that RMTI has begun to build on its presence in the dialysis market with the recent launch of dialysate Triferic, which is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for the replacement of iron to maintain hemoglobin in adult patients with hemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease. This formulation is administered through the dialysate (mixed with liquid bicarbonate). On top of this, an IV formulation of Triferic (Triferic Avnu) will enter clinical evaluation in Q3 2020, with Folkes expecting the commercial release to come in the following quarter. Folkes said, The company continues to believe in the future of Triferic, dialysate and IV formulations, and is executing on its commercial strategy, which takes time to get adoption. Speaking to this commercial strategy, RMTI is offering three-month evaluation periods for Triferic and has converted 75% of clinics who completed the evaluation period. RMTI is also positioning Triferic at a price that results in a cost neutral position for the clinics, while receiving the clinical benefits from Triferic.Additionally, the company is set to hold a virtual investor meeting this month to discuss the opportunity for two new indications, total parental nutrition (TPN) and hospitalized acute decompensated congestive heart failure (CHF)....we believe this incremental information is a meaningful positive, as while RMTI had previously noted its indication in exploring additional indications, investors will now have a concrete map of the development work the company will employ to fully maximize the platform within a product potential of the Triferic platform, Folkes stated. If that wasnt enough, on September 9, RMTI announced that it has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Jeil Pharmaceutical for the rights to commercialize Triferic in South Korea. As per the terms of the agreement, RMTI will receive an upfront fee and is eligible for milestone payments and royalties on net sales. All of the above prompted Folkes to comment, We believe Triferic is an innovative product that will drive significant value for RMTI shareholders. We expect product approvals and upward earnings revisions in our DCF model to drive RMTI's stock higher. To this end, Folkes rates RMTI an Overweight (i.e. Buy) along with an $11 price target. Should the target be met, a twelve-month gain in the shape of a whopping 801% could be in store. (To watch Folkes track record, click here)Turning now to the rest of the Street, 2 Buys and no Holds or Sells have been published in the last three months. Therefore, RMTI has a Moderate Buy consensus rating. Based on the $10 average price target, shares could soar 719% in the next year. (See RMTI stock analysis on TipRanks)Taiwan Liposome Company (TLC)Using its LipAD lipid-assembled delivery system to enable sustained release and targeted deliveries that reduce toxicity and improve efficacy, Taiwan Liposome Company develops cutting-edge nanomedicines. Currently going for $4.38 apiece, Cantor views TLC as an under-the-radar story and believes its share price reflects an attractive entry point.Writing for the firm, analyst Kristen Kluska told clients, TLC is underappreciated considering the management has an extensive track record in liposomal products (including two acquisitions). She cites the company's two late-stage development programs, TLC599 (its BioSeizer formulation of dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP) designed to provide relief for knee osteoarthritis (OA) pain) and TLC590 (its therapy for post-surgical pain), that could present with advantages over current standard of care extended release products, in large markets.According to Kluska, the company remains on track to complete enrollment for the Phase 3 study of TLC599 by YE20. Further, TLC believes this program is superior to the competition as its possible to receive one injection every six months and show that repeated dosing is both safe and effective.Kluska added, Further, TLC599 consists of just one vial, which could allow for a quick preparation, whereas Zilretta has two vials, thus a potentially longer preparation time. The company also has flexibility with the needle size that could be used for this product, and believes there could be a potential utilization in the joints, hip, shoulder, etc., which the company could consider evaluating in the future. To this end, should the results be positive, the company could submit an NDA during 1H22.When it comes to TLC590, TLC already reported topline results from the Phase 2 post-surgical pain following bunionectomy study earlier this summer, arguing the candidate has a faster onset and a longer duration than other therapies. Now, management needs to meet with the FDA to discuss pivotal trial designs. As a reminder, TLC is evaluating a different API (ropivacaine) vs. competitors, which could potentially show a stronger safety profile. The company also believes this product could have lower COGS, which could allow for attracting pricing, Kluska pointed out.If that wasnt enough, TLC recently revealed it is evaluating a NanoX sustained release of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) inhalation for prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19. It already submitted an IND, and could be ready to initiate a Phase 1 study after approval, with data potentially coming by early 2021. It should be noted that Taiwan is the second largest API producer for HCQ in the world, so the company has clear access, in Kluskas opinion. It should come as no surprise, then, that Kluska stays with the bulls. The analyst rates TLC an Overweight (i.e. Buy) along with an $11 price target. Should her thesis play out, a potential twelve-month gain of 154% could be in the cards. (To watch Kluskas track record, click here)What does the rest of the Street have to say? With 2 Buys and zero Holds or Sells, the word on the Street is that TLC is a Moderate Buy. In addition, the $11 average price target matches Kluskas. Mediterranean diet helps offset the health impacts of obesity – Earth.com
Posted: September 20, 2020 at 10:57 am
The Mediterranean diet helps to counter the health impacts of obesity, according to a new study from Uppsala University in Sweden.
In 2015, four million deaths were attributed to excessive weight and more than two-thirds of those deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Despite the increasing prevalence of obesity, the rates of CVD-related death continue to decrease in Western societies, a trend not explained by medical treatment alone, wrote the study authors. These observations suggest that other factors might modify the higher risk of CVD associated with higher body mass. Potentially, one such factor is diet.
The Mediterranean diet centers mainly around plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, beans, and whole grains. The diet also includes moderate amounts of dairy, poultry, eggs, and seafood, while red meat is only eaten occasionally.
A team led by Karl Michalsson set out to investigate how a Mediterranean-style diet among individuals with a higher body mass index (BMI) may affect all-cause mortality, with a particular focus on fatal cardiovascular events.
The study was focused on data from more than 79,000 Swedish adults enrolled in the Swedish Mammography Cohort and Cohort of Swedish Men.
Adherence to a Mediterranean-like diet (mMED) was assessed on a scale of 0 to 8, based on intake of fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, high-fiber grains, fish, red meat, and olive oil.
Over 21 years of follow-up, more than 30,000 participants died. The researchers found that individuals classified as overweight with high mMED had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality. Obese individuals who had high mMED did not have a higher mortality risk compared with those in the healthy weight group with the same diet.
By contrast, individuals with a healthy weight but low mMED had higher mortality rates compared to people in the same weight range who regularly adhered to a Mediterranean-style diet.
The findings were very similar among 12,000 participants who died from cardiovascular disease. The researchers determined that CVD mortality associated with high BMI was reduced by adherence to a Mediterranean diet, although it was not fully countered. Furthermore, lower BMI did not help offset the elevated CVD mortality risk associated with a low mMED.
These results indicate that adherence to healthy diets such as a Mediterranean-like diet may be a more appropriate focus that avoidance of obesity for the prevention of overall mortality, wrote the study authors. Nonetheless, a healthy diet may not completely counter higher CVD mortality related with obesity.
The research is published in the journal PLOS Medicine .

Singer JoJo recalls how she was put on a 500-calorie diet and given appetite-suppressing injections as a teen – POP TIMES UK
Posted: September 20, 2020 at 10:57 am
Joanna Nolle Levesque, known to most by her stage name JoJo began her career in 2004. Her first song, Leave (Get Out), made her an overnight sensation because of the powerhouse vocals that seemed misplaced coming out of a 13-year-old.
The song made JoJo the youngest female solo artiste with a number one single in the US.Sadly, her initial success was short-lived after she became embroiled in a legal battle with her label, Blackground Records, that lasted over a decade during which time JoJo released a few mixtapes and covers, but not much else.
However, the sordid tale of her time with Blackground does not end with their alleged attempts to control and block her ability to release music.
When I was 18, I remember being sat down in the Blackground office and the president of the label being like, We just want you to look as healthy as possible, JoJo recalls in an interview with Uproxx.
Initially, the singer did not buy into what she was being told about her image. She responded to attempts to get her to change how she looked by saying, Im actually the picture of health. I look like a healthy girl who eats and is active, and I dont think that this is about my health. I think that you want me to be really skinny.
Eventually, JoJo was sent to a nutritionist who put her on a 500 calorie-a-day diet and appetite-suppressing injections. Soon, the body image issues kicked in.
However, it wasnt simply out of insecurity that the issues were born the singer believed this was the only way she could continue making music. Maybe Im just so disgusting that no one wants to see me in a video and that they cant even look at me, she remembers thinking.
I am speaking, I would say, for probably every woman in this industry that your image and your weight is up for conversation And its just uncomfortable. Its hard enough being a woman, says JoJo.
The feeling of not being enough and needing validation, combined with issues with her label not releasing her music, and the loss of her father to addiction all led JoJo to turn to alcohol.
JoJo says she was completely reckless and needed to be buzzed to feel OK. However, she did not let her demons win, as she overcame her addictions, vowing to not end up like her father.
JoJo finally broke free of the powers that be who legally owned her voice up until that point and finally came back to music with III (pronounced tringle), an EP featuring three new singles.
This was followed by a tour, more EPs and singles, and a re-release of her debut and second albums now totally re-recorded with minor changes.
More recently, the singer put out a song titled Joanna a letter to her younger 14-year-old self that ends with the promise of new music. She made good on that promise, releasing the song Sabotage featuring Chika.

5 science-backed health benefits of vitamin C and how to add more to your diet – Insider – INSIDER
Posted: September 20, 2020 at 10:57 am
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is used for various processes in the body including building bone, collagen, and muscles. It's also important for wound healing. But the human body doesn't produce vitamin C on its own, meaning you need to consume it from dietary sources.
Here are five benefits of vitamin C, and how to know if you're getting enough of it:
"There is some limited evidence that extra-high doses of vitamin C boost the immune system and help fight off the common cold and other types of infections," says Ben Tanner, a physician assistant and nutrition expert. An extra-high dose of vitamin C is somewhere around 200 mg. "The evidence is pretty weak, but the benefits of taking some extra vitamin C when you are sick probably outweigh any risks, for almost everyone."
A paper published in the journal Nutrients in 2017 notes that some cells in the immune system require vitamin C to do their jobs, meaning a high supply about 100 to 200 mg a day of vitamin C can enhance immune system functioning.
Additionally, vitamin C deficiency can increase your risk of becoming susceptible to some bacteria and viruses. That said, the Mayo Clinic stresses there is no evidence that vitamin C prevents the common cold.
"[Vitamin C] is an antioxidant, which limits the damaging effects of free radicals," explains Amanda Izquierdo, MPH, RD, a Chicago-based registered dietitian.
Free radicals are compounds produced both by normal cell processes and by external sources like pollution or cigarette smoke. If your body accumulates too many free radicals, this can lead to something called oxidative stress, which is linked to aging and health conditions including:
Antioxidants like vitamin C can help prevent the accumulation of free radicals. That said, the International Journal of Biomedical Science study concludes that "further research is needed" before experts can unequivocally recommend antioxidant supplements as preventative treatments for some of these conditions linked to free radicals.

Thanks to vitamin C's role as an antioxidant, it may also play a role in heart health.
A 2013 paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association reviewed 16 studies to determine relationships between vitamin C intake and the likelihood of having a stroke.
The researchers concluded that people with a high vitamin C intake ranging from an average of 45 mg to 1,167 mg a day were less likely to have had strokes. Those who took between 200 mg and 550 mg a day of vitamin C saw the greatest reduction in stroke risk.
While researchers are unsure exactly how vitamin C reduces the risk of stroke, they believe it may be due to the vitamin's ability to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
A 2017 study published in Nutrients found that normal skin contains high levels of vitamin C because it plays two important roles in skin health: assisting with collagen production and preventing sun damage.
Vitamin C can help stimulate collagen production in the skin. Collagen is a protein that provides skin with its structure and stretch. As we age, our body naturally produces less collagen, resulting in wrinkles and fine lines. Topical application of vitamin C may help regenerate lost collagen.
Vitamin C also removes oxidants caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which helps to prevent sun damage. Ultraviolet radiation causes premature aging of the skin, resulting in wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and skin sagging. Vitamin C also inhibits the production of melanin a pigment that can cause dark patches on the skin.
Vitamin C helps with the absorption of non-heme iron, which is a type of dietary iron found in plant-based foods like leafy vegetables, nuts, and grains. Iron is important for maintaining healthy blood, as it's a major component of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen to cells and organs. When someone is iron deficient, they develop a condition called anemia that causes muscle weakness and fatigue.
Because vitamin C assists with iron absorption, people with anemia may benefit from taking iron supplements along with vitamin C supplements, or another source of vitamin C like a glass of orange juice.
The amount of vitamin C you need varies depending on your age, according to the National Institutes of Health.
There are not many risks associated with consuming too much vitamin C, Tanner says, because it's a water-soluble vitamin. That means that any excess is simply flushed out of the body in urine.
"One exception would be people with a condition called hemochromatosis, who have excessively high iron levels," he says. "Vitamin C increases iron absorption in the gut."
Too much iron stored in the body can cause cirrhosis, heart failure, other organ failure, and diabetes.
Izquierdo says that most people don't experience issues from consuming too much vitamin C, but potential symptoms include:
"The obvious food sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits," says Tanner. "But many other fruits and vegetables are also good sources."
Foods rich in vitamin C include:
