Five Ways To Help the Environment While in Lockdown – JSTOR Daily

Most of us cant join a tree planting effort right now. We cant physically protect an endangered species. We cant assemble for a protest. Luckily, there are still ways to go green without setting foot outside the door.

Keep Recycling

The coronavirus pandemic disrupted the already complicated business of recycling, but the piles of trash we produce shouldnt be dumped in landfills or the ocean. To put some numbers in perspective, to-date, humans produced 8,300 million metric tons of plastic, which is 25,000 times the weight of the Empire State Building. Seventy nine percent of that has ended up in landfills or the ocean. Weve gotten better, however. In 1988, our municipal solid waste totaled 140 million metric tons per year. Back then, the daily amount of the solid waste we produced would fill about 63,000 garbage trucks, which would stretch the entire distance between San Francisco to Los Angeleswith most of the garbage destined for landfills. In 2017, we generated 267.8 million tons, but approximately 67 million tons of that were recycled and 27 million tons were composted.

Luckily, according to some sources it seems that during lockdowns Americans are recycling better than ever. Perhaps while we are all staying home we can also learn to use less and waste less.

Save Water

We all know that freshwater is a hot commodity in the 21st century. Thats why its so important to maintain a working infrastructure, minimizing leaks. One recent report found that many urban centers have leakage problemsand not only from hydrants. Water mains typically account for at least half of the water lost. Residential homes leak too. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that about ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more every day. The average households leaks can send nearly 10,000 gallons of fresh drinking water down the drain every year. As people spend time at home during lockdowns, noticing drippy faucets and running toilets is easier than ever. The EPA also has another way to spot a leak. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons during the colder months of January or February, there are serious leaks.

Consider Solar

As the economy starts to reopen, clean energy industries are expected to make a sweep. Because lockdowns drastically cut energy demand, the need for oil and coal has dropped, paving way for renewable options. In fact, once the world starts to return to normal, the only energy sources expected to grow will be the renewable onesprimarily due to the low operating costs and easy access. One recent article noted that solar has become one of the cheapest forms of energy generation. In the United States, the amount of solar power installed grew by 485 percent between 2010 to 2013. During that time, the price of a typical household system dropped by almost 30 percent. So far this year, renewable electricity generation grew by three percent during the first quarter and accounted for nearly 28 percent of electricity supply, up from 26 percent a year earlier. As the world continues to go green, giving roof solar panels a shot may be a good idea.

Eat More Plants

Its a proven fact that reducing meat consumption is healthy for both the people and the planet they live on. Eating more plant-based foods can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Plant-based diets are also more sustainable because they use fewer natural resources than diets that involve animal products. According to some sources, worldwide animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gas than all emissions from transportation, including planes, trains, and vehicles. Animal agriculture is also one of the leading causes of deforestation and has resulted in the loss of pastures, including rainforests. Plus, crops grown to feed the animals are often sprayed with pesticides, such as glyphosate, which contaminates water and kills bees. During lockdown, home cooking and email chain recipes hit record highsit might be the perfect moment to experiment with new plant-based recipes, creating new, healthy favorites.

Garden Away!

About 70 percent of American households do some kind ofgardeningworkplanting flowers orgrowing vegetables and fresh fruit. Connecting with nature can help with coronavirus blues, but gardening has other important benefitsit can help sequester carbon. 12 cookbooks with low-sugar recipes for diabetic, keto and paleo dieters – CNET

There are plenty of reasons to adopt a low-sugar diet, including diabetes or a keto or paleo lifestyle. But whatever your reason, thesecookbooks make eating well easy and delicious.

I have a friend who was recently diagnosed with diabetes, which was sad for a number of reasons. It's a whole new lifestyle to adjust to, especially because my friend is such a foodie. She loves trying new things and taking pictures of all the beautiful and delicious food experiences she shares with her loved ones. So after her diagnosis, I picked up a diabetes-friendly cookbook for her to show her that even though her diet is much more restricted, she can still be as adventurous with foods as she once was.

While I was doing my research to make sure my friend would be fine to eat the meals in her cookbook, I found that the diet diabetics follow is similar to the paleo and keto diets, in that they are low in sugar and carbs. So, whether you need to cut sugar out for health reasons or are looking to experiment with a new diet, these cookbooks are all worth picking up and diving into.

This cookbook was written by a dietician and diabetes expert, so it includes the newest information we have about managing diabetes in the context of the meals you eat. It includes both meal plans and hundreds of recipes that will prevent any serious side effects a newly diagnosed diabetic may be afraid of. It also helps that, even though they are low in sugar and carbs, these meals -- like the salmon, quinoa and avocado salad and herbed chicken meatball wraps -- are delicious.

Anything Betty Crocker is bound to be flavorful, homey and delicious. If you've been diagnosed with diabetes, let this cookbook be a reminder that you don't have to give up any of your favorite meals. In this book, you'll find plenty of breakfasts, lunches and dinners (including blueberry-almond brown bread, pork chops with raspberry-chipotle sauce and herbed rice and even pumpkin-chocolate chip cookies) you can eat until you're good and full.

While this cookbook is similar to the others in that it contains well-rounded and health-conscious recipes for a diabetic, I like that it also contains budgeting advice. With more and more doctor's appointments, treatments and equipment to pay for just to keep your diabetes under control, money may betighter than you'd like to admit. With a built-in budgeting guide, this book assures you that you don't have to break the bank for your new dietary lifestyle.

It simply is not possible to go without dessert. Luckily, there are tons of cookbooks like this one that focus just on desserts. But don't worry -- all the recipes in this book are perfectly healthy for diabetics. The sweets in this book -- which include mocha fudge cake and peach crumble -- are healthy anddelicious and the recipes are easy to follow.

Even though we are now moving into keto (and, eventually, paleo) cookbooks, I just want to mention that most -- if not all -- of the recipes in the following cookbooks are healthy for diabetics as well. Keto and paleo diets follow a low-carb and low-sugar regimen that coincides with diabetic diets. However, if you are unsure, definitely consult your doctor and make sure you're monitoring your blood levels.

This cookbook is great because all the recipes are keto-friendly, but they are also perfect for anyone who's on-the-go and perpetually busy. You'll find recipes with five or fewer ingredients, meals that can be made in 30 minutes or less and entire meals that can all be prepared in one pot, including a BLT breakfast salad, garlic butter shrimp and berry cheesecake fat bombs.

Instant Pots remain wildly popular because they are so versatile in how you can use them -- and, of course, you can make amazing meals with little to no effort. If you got an Instant Pot and are now afraid that your new diet may limit your ability to use it, have no fear! This cookbook has plenty of Instant Pot recipes the whole family will love -- like deep-dish pizza dip, cauliflower and bacon chowder and southern sugar pie -- that are all keto-friendly, so you won't get bored on your diet any time soon.

Meal prepping is a huge part of dieting. You prepare well-portioned, healthy meals so that you have lunch and dinner for the week and you're not tempted to eat fast food on the run. When you start your keto diet, you may also want to start meal prepping to ensure that you're sticking to your plan. Try this cookbook that focuses on the meal prepping process and is in line with the keto diet. Recipes include ham and cheese breakfast muffins, Italian zucchini boats and pork burrito bowls.

While the title of this cookbook only mentions the keto diet, it is advertised as perfectly good for paleo and diabetic diets as well. Even people on seriously restricted diets need a little something sweet every now and again -- and what better than ice cream as we head into the summer months? Make healthy ice cream and frozen treats including strawberry cheesecake pops, apricot sherbet and chocolate avocado ice cream with this book.

Like Instant Pots, spiralizers have gotten a lot of attention in the past few years. Spiralizers allow you to finely slice vegetables so that they have the consistency and appearance of noodles. People replace regular pasta (which is high in carbs) with these vegetable noodles for a healthier, paleo-friendly option, which works great for keto and diabetic diets, too. Featuring several different vegetables -- including beets, carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, turnips, cabbage and bell peppers. With recipes including creamy fettuccini alfredo, turnip curly fries and cucumber noodle poke bowls, this cookbook will help you master your spiralizer while sticking to your diet in the most delicious way possible.

I'm a big fan of "for beginners" cookbooks because they do a great job of teaching you about your new diet and offering delicious meals that motivate you to stick to it. So whether you've just been diagnosed with diabetes or you're thinking of starting the paleo diet, this cookbook (with recipes including high-protein grain-free burgers, buffalo chicken wraps and paleo waffles) is a great investment.

This cookbook, in addition to paleo meals, shopping lists and quick and easy-to-follow recipes (there's barbecue salmon with peach salsa, Peruvian-style chicken, meyer lemon curd cakes and no-cook chocolate pudding), contains additional options for gluten- and dairy-free meals. So even if you're just trying to avoid dairy, you'll find something great in this cookbook -- with slow cooker, one-pot and 30-minute recipes too.

You can't possibly think I forgot about dessert! This paleo-friendly cookbook is full of decadent and tasty cakes, cookies, doughnuts, waffles and more -- including vermont maple doughnuts, gingerbread pancakes and celebration chocolate cake -- all without grains, gluten, dairy or refined sugar. Who says you can't satisfy your sweet tooth while sticking to your diet?

Some of the most common causes of a hormonal imbalance include menopause, PCOS and lactation.

5) You eat mindlessly when distracted

If you eat your meals sitting in front of the TV or watching your favourite show online, chances are youll end up eating more than you need. Comfort eating is a huge obstacle if youre trying to lose weight. Mindlessly munching on unhealthy food will make you unsatisfied, causing you to eat more later. Gas prices continue to rise in Central Florida as restrictions are lifted

While the price of gas is starting to rise, drivers will likely find the cheapest summer gas in 15 years.

AAA reports that the states average price per gallon which is a $1.88 is the lowest around Memorial Day since 2003.

Nationwide, people stayed home due to COVID-19. That suppressed demand and caused the price to plummet.

In Florida, it hit the bottom at $1.76 on May 6th. Now its climbing again as Floridas economy begins to reopen.

Around the state, West Palm Beach has the highest prices and the Panhandle the lowest.

Central Florida is right in the middle with an average of $1.86 in Orlando and $1.87 in The Villages.

The Florida League of Women Voters is pushing to get an estimated 700,000 felons registered to vote before the November election.

The effort follows a weekend ruling that cleared many felons to register before paying back fines and restitution. Florida League President Patricia Brigham says outreach has changed due to the coronavirus, but will still move forward.

Once it was clear that COVID-19 was a clear and present danger and we all went to a shelter in place which many Floridians are continuing to do, we knew that we could no longer do person-to-person registration so we suspended it as long as we have to. And we are doing voter registration by pointing Floridians to Vote411.org, Brigham said.

The group is also urging registered voters to request a vote-by-mail ballot so they wont have to leave their home to vote during the global pandemic.

She says while some election supervisors are not in favor of a vote-by-mail only election, more people doing so will help keep the number of those going into polling sites low.

People visiting Six Flags theme parks and water parks this summer will be required to wear a face mask at all times, the company says, as it prepares to reopen its first park to visitors since the coronavirus forced mass closures. Six Flags says it also will use thermal imaging to screen temperatures of guests and employees before they can enter.

Frontier City in Oklahoma City will be the first Six Flags park to reopen, on June 5. But before visiting, customers will need to make a reservation and bring a mask; anyone who doesnt have a face covering will need to buy one at the gate, the company says.

All guests over the age of two and all team members will be required to wear face masks covering the nose and mouth throughout their visit/work day, the company announced Tuesday. Special accommodations can be made for people with disabilities, health concerns, religious restrictions, or other circumstances that would prevent them from wearing a mask, Six Flags said.

Capacity will also be restricted, and people will be required to maintain physical distance as they stand in line for rides, food and other attractions. The safety protocols will apply across all of Six Flags 26 locations in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

Frontier City, like all Six Flags parks, is an outdoor attraction that poses a significantly lower risk of exposure than indoor venues, Six Flags President and CEO Mike Spanos said in a statement about the plans. He added, Because our parks cover dozens or even hundreds of acres, we can easily manage guest throughput to achieve proper social distancing.

Every U.S. state is now in the process of relaxing at least some of the restrictions that were put in place in the weeks after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. Many Americans and public officials alike are nowweighing how to curb the coronaviruswhile also restarting normal activities and planning for the summer.

Oklahoma began allowing a broad range of businesses to reopen on May 1, from restaurant dining rooms to movie theaters and gyms. The state further relaxed restrictions when it entered the second phase of its reopening plan on May 15. Its poised to begin thethird phase on June 1.

Oklahoma was reporting more than 6,000 COVID-19 cases and 315 deaths as of Tuesday morning, according to the stateDepartment of Health. More than 2,800 cases roughly 46% of the current total have been reported in the past 30 days. The state says more than 4,800 people have recovered from the respiratory disease.

Scientists have learned a great deal about how the novel coronavirus spreads. But one of the mysteries theyre still trying to untangle is where the virus, known as SARS-CoV-2, came from in the first place. Scientific evidence pointsoverwhelminglyto wildlife and to bats as the most likely origin point.

Bats are critically important for pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds. They catch bugs, the same ones that bite us and eat some of our crops. But bats also harbor some of the toughest known zoonotic diseases those caused by germs that spread between animals and people.

The rabies virus, the Marburg virus, the Hendra andNipah virusesall find a natural reservoir in bats, meaning those viruses can live in bats without harming them. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa wastraced to a bat colony. The SARS virus originates in bats, along withother coronaviruses. And now, SARS-CoV-2 is linked to bats too. The virus has a 96% genetic similarity to coronavirus samples previously found in bats.

Globally, zoonotic diseases havebeen on the risefor decades. The CDC estimates that six out of ten infectious diseases in people come from animals. Increased human interactions with animals through land development that destroys habitat, agricultural practices and livestock and wildlife trade have created a perfect storm for emerging diseases to appearthroughout the world, pathogens both previously known and completely novel.

There is not enough genetic evidence to know how precisely this particular coronavirus transmitted from animals (likely bats) to humans, and whether an intermediate animal was involved in the chain of transmission. Further genetic testing and evidence is needed to fully know where this coronavirus came from. The work of virus hunting of tracking an outbreak to its origin point can take years. The 2003 outbreak of SARS, for instance, took a decade of detective work, sampling the feces, urine, or blood ofthousands of horseshoe batsacross China until a match was found.

Starting Friday, shoppers in Florida emerging from coronavirus stay-at-home orders can avoid paying sales taxes while putting together disaster-preparation stockpiles for the 2020 hurricane season.

Florida lawmakers included the disaster-preparation tax holiday in a 47.7-million-dollar tax package approved in March.

During the period lasting through June 4th, shoppers will be able to avoid paying sales taxes on items such as reusable ice packs, flashlights, fuel containers, coolers, batteries, radios and tarps.

The biggest-ticket items included in the holiday are portable generators that cost 750 dollars or less.

In addition to helping consumers, Florida Retail Federation CEO Scott Shalley hopes the seven-day tax holiday can provide a boost for businesses suffering from the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

Youre going to see, again, additional incentives from the retailers to encourage sales for disaster preparation. Youll continue to see, of course, all of the safe and smart shopping measures in terms of social distancing and sanitizing, Shalley said.

Federal officials have expressed concern about people being prepared for disasters this year. Hurricane season will start Monday and continue through November 30th.

COVID-19 is killing African Americans ata rate three times higherthan white people. You can see the disparity on the map with places like the Bronx, the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans and the South Side of Chicago grappling with thousands of deaths from the disease. The health crisis, however, is also an economic crisis, and the virus is clobbering these communities on this front, too.

Job losses are dramatically concentrated in the low end of the wage distribution, says Erik Hurst, an economist at the University of Chicagos Booth School of Business. He is the co-author ofa new study, The U.S. Labor Market during the Beginning of the Pandemic Recession, which analyzes payroll data from millions of American workers between early March and mid-April.

If you look at the top fifth of income earners as of February, he says, about 9% of them lost their jobs. Thats catastrophically bad. But if you look at the bottom fifth of earners, who aremore likelyto be black and Latino, about 35%of them lost their jobs.

The International Monetary Fund, which historically has not been a bleeding heart institution when it comes to issues of inequality, is now warning that the COVID-19 crisis will increase economic disparities. Inanother new study, it looks at the effects of pandemics like SARS, H1N1, and Ebola over the last few decades. And what we found in the aftermath of these events, inequality was higher on a whole host of measures, says Jonathan Ostry, an IMF official who co-authored the study. Workers at the top are more likely to have the luxury of working remotely and the skills, education, and wealth to help them weather the economic downturns that follow pandemics. Meanwhile, workers at the bottom get squeezed.

In the United States, these disparities are inextricably linked to race. Its undeniable when you look at death rates. However, if you were looking simply at unemployment numbers, you might at first get misled. In good times and bad, the black unemployment rate is typically double the white unemployment rate, says the economist Valerie Wilson, who directs the Program on Race, Ethnicity, and the Economy at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank. But, if you look at themost recent datafrom the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the black unemployment is 16.7%, which is higher than the white unemployment rate of 14.2%, but not close to double.

The closer parity between black and white unemployment numbers, Wilson says, reflects how widespread the shutdown has been. It also, however, reflects the disproportionate representation of African Americans in what have been deemed to be essential jobs. Think grocery cashiers, mail carriers, security guards, health aides, gas-station attendants, and fast-food cooks.

Wilson says having an essential job is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, essential workers have greater job security, which might come in handy if unemployment benefits expire. But, on the other hand, these workers are on the frontlines, risking their health. People are having to choose between their economic security and their health security, she says. Adding insult to injury, had they been laid off, these workers would have been able to stay home and collect relatively generous unemployment benefits. Instead, they have to work, and theyreoften not compensatedfor lost hours.

Meanwhile, government rescue effortsare failingminority-owned businesses. The new Payroll Protection Program is designed to save small businesses from the crisis, and it has the generous feature of offering forgivable loans to those who keep their employees on the payroll. However,around 96%of black-owned businesses, Wilson says, are sole proprietorships, meaning they dont have employees, whichmakes it harderfor them to get their loans forgiven. The loans are also distributed through private banks, which maylack pre-existing relationshipswith minority business owners and may discriminate when giving out loans. Surveys show that around 38% of all small business applicants report getting the loans they requested butjust 12% of minority applicantsreport getting them.

The cruel irony of the COVID-19 pandemic is that after a decade of wage stagnation following the financial crisis, whichhit them especially hard African Americans werefinally beginning to see wage growthjust as the virus began hitting our shores. Many African Americans lack the wealth needed to help them float through another period of economic turbulence. The median black family has onlyabout 10 percentof the wealth of the median white family, Wilson says. They dont have any backup available in terms of wealth or other kinds of financial resources that they can pull from when they lose a job or when their pay gets cut.

Black Americans are approximately 13% of the nations population, but hold closer to 2.6% of the nations wealth, says William Darity Jr., the Samuel DuBois Cook Distinguished Professor of Public Policy, African and African American Studies, and Economics at Duke University.

Darity and his wife, the scholar Kirsten Mullen, recently wrote op-eds in thePhiladelphia InquirerandNewsweekarguing that the COVID-19 crisis in black communities is integrally related to their deficit of wealth. Darity says that, like the higher rate of preexisting conditions such asdiabetes,asthma, andobesityseen in black communities which is itself linked to poverty we argue that you should think about the wealth gap as a preexisting condition that leads to greater susceptibility to the harms of the disease. Darity and Mullen, who are authors of a new book calledFrom Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-first Century, argue that the COVID-19 death rate in black communities further strengthens the case for addressing the racial wealth gap through a reparations program.

The pandemic didnt stop visitors from traveling to Mexico Beach over Memorial Day weekend. Mayor Al Cathey described the towns white sandy shoreline as packed.

He says hes worried about the coronavirus reaching the small coastal town, which has so far had zero cases.

I hope that we havent reacted to the We have to open pressure too quickly. When I look at the news and I look at other places, and when I drive our beach here, I dont know how much gathering we can do on the beach and not have a problem, Cathey said.

Bay County has reported new coronavirus cases every day for nearly the last two weeks. Visitors began arriving there from other states after the beaches reopened almost a month ago.

No door to door canvassing. Public gatherings are canceled. Motor vehicle offices are closed. Naturalization ceremonies are on hiatus.

Almost every place where Americans usually register to vote has been out of reach since March and its led to a big drop in new registrations right before a presidential election that was expected to see record turnout.

The consequences of that declinecould reshape the electorate ahead of the November election, although its not yet clear how.

Four years ago, organizers for the progressive group New Virginia Majority were able to register 120,000 new voters, who contributed to Hillary Clintons victory in the state and Democrats subsequent takeover of the state legislature.

But this year, in the middle of a pandemic?

The rules of engagement have been completely upended, said Tram Nguyen, New Virginia Majoritys co-executive director.

Were not able to walk the neighborhood streets. Were not able to set up tables at community centers and places where its easy to reach people in community. So organizers have still continued to do the work around engaging folks. It looks a lot different, she said.

The group is now reaching people online, mostly over social media and video chats, but Nguyen doubts that theyll be able to register as many new voters this year as they did in 2016.

Across the country, other interest groups, political parties and election officials are running into similar hurdles.

Until the pandemic struck, the 2020 presidential election had been on track to see a huge surge in new voters.According to data from the Democratic voter targeting firm TargetSmart, voter registrations in January and February of this year far outpaced those in 2016.

February we had a net 7,000 new registrations. And in March we had a net 500 new registrations, said Adams, a Republican. In April, the states voter rolls shrank by more than 1,000.

Like voters in many states, Kentuckians can register online. But Adams said its not the same as, say, going to a booth at the state fair.

People can still register, the governments not closed, but without that personal contact, with people encouraging their friends to register, thats why weve seen such a big drop-off, he said.

Kentucky is hardly alone. Virginia saw 73% fewer registrations last month than it did four years ago. Officials said one reason is the shutdown of Department of Motor Vehicle offices, where voters routinely register. North Carolina had a similar decline and has expanded online registration to pick up some of the slack.

Political parties, which often take an outsize role in registering new voters, have also adjusted.

In Texas, where online registration is not allowed, the states Democrats launched a website last month that provides a registration form with a postage-paid envelope to send it in as part of their goal of registering a million new voters.

Texas Republicans are doing the same, although party chair James Dickey says they started before the pandemic.

In fact, we have seen our voter registration counts continue to increase and our volunteer count continue to increase, said Dickey, who added that the Texas GOP is well on its way to reaching its goal of registering at least 100,000 new voters.

Dickey thinks the pandemic has probably had more impact on some of the partys other activities. It was our plan to be doing all of our voter persuasion and voter turnout efforts in person, he said. Theyre now doing it over the phone.

Organizers of both parties say they always try to meet voters where they are but now that means reaching them at home and online.

One group thats benefiting is the nonprofit Vote.org, which uses technology to register and mobilize voters.

Were having an avalanche of people come to us, as a result of groups ditching their in-person campaigns, said Vote.org CEO Andrea Hailey.

The group has helped register more than a half million people so far this year, with a focus on young voters and people of color.

One hurdle, Hailey says, are requirements in some states that voters register by mail and provide photocopies of their ID.

We used to point people to a library if you didnt have a printer, and say go to your nearest library, get them to print it out, but you know libraries are closed right now, she said.

The big question is how all this will affect the November election. Most people can still register until shortly before Election Day and its unclear whether the losses so far this year can be made up in the fall.

The general belief is that Democrats benefit the most by signing up new voters, but thats not necessarily true. What matters most is who ends up casting ballots.

Tram Nguyen of New Virginia Majority says one thing thats been lost in the pandemic is the bond her organizers have with the people they register in person, a relationship that helps them make sure these new voters actually show up and vote.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, made an unannounced visit to the Veterans Memorial Park in New Castle, Del., on Monday.

Its the first time Biden has left the area around his home in Wilmington, since mid-March when he began self-isolation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

He and his wife Jill Biden, both wearing black masks, placed a wreath before a memorial wall commemorating war veterans from Delaware and New Jersey.

Never forget the sacrifices that these men and women made. Never, ever, forget, Biden said before leaving the wall.

President Trump also honored service members at two events Monday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and Fort McHenry in Baltimore.

Trump has been critical of Bidens decision to remain in self-isolation at his home in Wilmington. Biden canceled in-person campaign events. Over the last two months, Biden has held events virtually with supporters, including fundraisers, and has done a number of television interviews from his home.

In response to a question about being out in public on Memorial Day, Biden said, It feels good to be out of my house.

To Fight Covid-19, Dont Neglect Immunity and Inflammation – The New York Times

While most people focus, as they should, on social distancing, face coverings, hand washing and even self-isolation to protect against the deadly coronavirus now ravaging the country, too few are paying serious attention to two other factors critically important to the risk of developing a Covid-19 infection and its potential severity.

Those factors are immunity, which should be boosted, and inflammation, which should be suppressed. Ive touched on both in past columns, but now that months of pandemic-related restrictions have impacted the lives of millions, and after seeing who is most likely to become infected and die, immunity and inflammation warrant further discussion and public attention.

One fact is indisputable: Older people are especially vulnerable to this disease and its potentially fatal consequences. But older doesnt necessarily mean old. While people over 80 are 184 times more likely to die from Covid-19 than those in their 20s, Dr. Nir Barzilai, scientific director of the American Federation for Aging Research, points out that vulnerability increases starting around age 55.

Immune defenses decline with age. That is a fundamental fact of biology. For example, with advancing age, natural killer cells, a major immunological weapon, become less effective at destroying virus-infected cells. But it doesnt mean nothing can be done to slow or sometimes even reverse immunological decline, said Dr. Barzilai, who directs the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

At the same time, inflammation in tissues throughout the body increases with age, a fact that helps the coronavirus get into the body, bind to molecules in the nose and lungs, and wreak havoc, Janet Lord, director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham in England, explained in a webinar this month.

Fat tissue, for example, increases inflammation and renders overweight people more vulnerable to a Covid infection.

Here, too, there are established ways to diminish inflammation and thereby enhance resistance to this deadly disease. The basic weapons, diet and exercise, are available to far more people than currently avail themselves of their benefits. Lifestyle can have a major impact on a persons immune system, for better or worse, Dr. Lord said.

I spoke recently to a friend who escaped New York City in early March to avoid Covid-19. But while he reduced his risk of infection by limiting contact with other people, he has gained weight, lost muscle mass and, in becoming nearly sedentary, is also now more likely to become seriously ill if he should contract the virus.

Skeletal muscle helps the immune system, Dr. Lord said. The contractions of skeletal muscles produce small proteins called myokines that, by dampening inflammation, have big health benefits. Myokines ferret out infections and keep inflammation from getting out of hand, she said. Also, exercising skeletal muscle helps diminish body fat and increases the potency of natural killer cells no matter what your age. An 85-year-old who increases muscle mass is better able to recover from Covid, she said.

The more extensive or vigorous the exercise, the less inflammation, Dr. Lord said. She noted that those who do fewer than 3,000 steps a day have the highest level of inflammation, whereas those who do 10,000 or more steps daily have the least inflammation. But social isolation doesnt have to make you a couch potato.

You dont need any special equipment, she said, so the inability to go to a gym or even outside need not be an impediment to getting in those 10,000 steps. She suggested exercises like heel raises, leg raises and sit-to-stand exercises. You could even use two of those cans of beans you stocked up on to strengthen arm muscles. Or consider going up and down stairs, or even one step, which has the added benefit of strengthening heart function. Exercise is especially important for people with chronic health conditions that increase their vulnerability to a serious Covid infection. No matter what your condition, exercise will improve your immunity, Dr. Lord said.

Regular exercise can also improve your sleep, which can suppress inflammation and keep your immune system from having to work overtime. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep a night. If virus-related anxieties keep you awake, try tai chi, meditation or progressive muscle relaxation (from feet to head) to reduce stress and calm your mind and body. Avoid eating a big meal late in the day or consuming caffeine after noon. Perhaps eat a banana or drink a glass of warm milk about an hour before bedtime.

Which brings me to what for many is the biggest health challenge during the coronavirus crisis: consuming a varied, nutrient-rich diet and keeping calorie intake under control. It seems baking has become a popular pastime for many sheltering at home, and the consequences weight gain and overconsumption of sugar and refined flour can increase susceptibility to the virus. Excess weight weakens the immune system, and abdominal fat in particular enhances damaging inflammation.

The good news, according to Dr. Leonard Calabrese, clinical immunologist at the Cleveland Clinic, is that even small amounts of weight loss can counter inflammation, a benefit aided by avoiding highly processed foods and eating more fresh fruits and vegetables that are relatively low in calories and high in protective nutrients.

Especially helpful are foods rich in vitamin C all manner of citrus (oranges, grapefruit, clementines, etc.), red bell pepper, spinach, papaya and broccoli and zinc, including shellfish (oysters are a powerhouse of zinc), seeds, dairy products, red meat, beans, lentils and nuts.

For those who drink alcohol, these stressful times can tempt overconsumption. More than the recommended two drinks a day for men and one for women can reduce immunity-boosting nutrients in the body and impair the ability of white blood cells to fight off microbial invaders, Dr. Calabrese notes. For those who drink, a five-ounce serving of red wine a day is widely considered a beneficial component of an anti-inflammatory Mediterranean-style diet.

Reports linking a deficiency of vitamin D to an increased risk of developing a severe Covid-19 infection have prompted some people to take measures that may ultimately undermine their health, like basking unprotected in the sun, which can lead to skin cancer, and taking excessive amounts of a vitamin D supplement, which can cause distressing gastrointestinal symptoms.

Healthy blood levels of vitamin D can, though, help keep the bodys immune system strong and possibly help prevent it from raging out of control, causing the cytokine storm that can severely damage the lungs and other tissues and has resulted in many Covid-19 deaths. But for those with already healthy levels of vitamin D, theres no established immune benefit from taking more than 2,000 IU of vitamin D-3 a day.

EDUCATION Secretary John Swinney is unable to rule out next years school exams being cancelled due to Covid-19but he confirmed pupils going back in a blended learning model on August 11is set in stone.

MrSwinney addressed MSPs remotely as he publishedthe scientific advice the Scottish Governments decision on re-opening schools has been based on.

The evidence shows thatyounger children may be less susceptible to infection from Covid-19 than adults but warns that there is insufficient evidence to determine whether older children have differing susceptibility to infection from adults.

MrSwinney said: The majority view of the advisory group is that it is necessary to consider actions to support physical distancing guidance in schools and situations where children are indoors for extended periods of time.

It follows that almost all children and young people acrossScotlandwill therefore experience a blendof in-school and in-home learning from 11 August 2020. This will bring benefits including an early return to school for many andthe ability of all learners to engage with weekly in-home learning tasks.

The scientific advice that we have received so far leads us towards taking a cautious approach and we will continue to monitor the evidence and advice to inform decisions.

Conservative education spokesperson, Jamie Greene, askedMrSwinney if he could confirm that next years exams will take place after the 2020 exam diet was axed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

MrGreeneaskedMrSwinney if he could confirm the Scottish Government had no plans to cancel next years exam diet.

The Education Secretarysaid: The exam diet for 2021 is being planned just now. We obviously are uncertain about what the path of Covid will bein the course ofthe next 12 months.

The Scottish Qualifications Authority will give advice to schools about the importance of capturing evidence of the performance and the achievements of youngpeople -to ensure that can be properly borne in mind in any certification process for 2020/21.

The Scottish Greens have called for next years exams to be cancelled now, giving teachers time to plan for assessments when they return to schools next month ahead of welcomingpupils in August.

Scottish Greens education spokesperson Ross Greersaid: The Scottish Government is planning for exams to take place in 2021, but has confirmed that they may be cancelled at any point between now and next May. This leaves pupils and teachers in limbo for months during an already incredibly difficult time.

Given that most pupils will be expected to learn from home for much of the coming term, whichMrSwinney has acknowledged is to their detriment, the government should scrap the 2021 exams now and replace them with a system of continuous assessment throughout the year, which teachers can plan for before schools return in August.

MrSwinney said there was no guarantee that next years exams will go ahead as normal.

He said: Theres a general view within Scottish education of the importance of us havingreliableand certificatedqualificationsforall as part of the way we deliver our education the exam diet represents a significant part of that process.

While the exam diet is planned for in 2021, we cannot be certain that it will be able to take its course.

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)will continue to develop plans to deliver the 2021 exam diet and will provide further advice to ensure arrangements are in place to capture, on an on-going basis , the learning outcomes met by young people in the senior phase in schools year 2020/21.

The Education Secretary added: We want tomaximisethe time children can spend with their teachers and their peers, so we are calling on local authorities to expand the size of the learning estate where possible. This could include community facilities or vacant office accommodation.

We are also working with the General Teaching Council for Scotland for plans to call on registered teachers, who are not currently teaching, or recently retired, to consider returning to workto support children through the blended model of learning.

Starting tomorrow morning, and with a new juice every day, its a simple 3, 5 0r 7 day detox plan you can follow as much or as little as you like. You can adapt it to your specific needs and requirements.

A detox is when we have the opportunity to reset our bodies, to work on removing harmful toxins and the build up of nasties that can inhibit the function of our organs and decrease your metabolic rate.

Our food comes with a lot of sugars and fats plus flavour enhancers, it is important to eat bitter foods to balance out your diet.

Luckily these bitter foods can support the work of the liver and bowels have to do, and improve your digestion and metabolic rate. Just the taste of these foods stimulate our stomach, liver, and gall bladder. Bitter foods make the livers work a lot easier and support its digestion and detoxification process.

First thing in the morning, one cup of lemon tea, hot water with a slice of lemon with the skin left on.

Step 2

Body brushing working from your toes to your torso body brush your entire body before entering the shower.

Pregnancy has been described as a teachable moment for promoting healthy lifestyle choices. This is because pregnant women are highly motivated to make behavioural changes. Whether the change involves taking a prescribed medication or supplement, or giving up a risky behaviour such as smoking, pregnant women are more committed because they feel a responsibility towards the health and well-being of their unborn child.

Such positive lifestyle changes will always be beneficial. But, for women who fall pregnant with conditions such as obesity, they may come too late. This is important because the nutrition environment experienced by fetuses during pregnancy can affect their growth and development in early life. This, in turn, affects their risk of developing obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease as they age.

Obese women, or those with gestational diabetes (glucose intolerance beginning or first recognised during pregnancy), are more likely to give birth to larger babies (over 4kg) with greater adiposity (or body fatness). This puts moms at higher risk of delivery complications, such as requiring a caesarean birth. It also increases the chances of their children becoming obese. In turn, obese children are five times more likely to grow into obese adults and thus, more likely to develop diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

What has been less understood so far is how diet during pregnancy influences growth in the womb, particularly in communities where obesity rates are high as is the case in South Africa.

We conducted a study of women from Soweto three years ago in which we recorded their dietary patterns during pregnancy. We explored whether these were related to the amount of weight that they gained, as well as their newborns birthweight and their levels of body fat.

We found that there were positive effects of an improved diet during pregnancy. But we also found that these benefits were most obvious in women whose weight was normal at the start of their pregnancies.

This suggests that improvements made to the diets of overweight and obese women once they are pregnant may have a limited impact on their health and that of their babies.

Two thirds of women in South Africa are overweight or obese. One in four adults die prematurely (before the age of 70) from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer or chronic respiratory disease.

Among women living in Soweto, one in ten will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Half of them will go on to develop diabetes within the following 10 years.

This explosion of obesity and related chronic diseases has been linked to rapid lifestyle changes as a result of urbanisation, including a transition towards more processed diets high in sugar, saturated fat, salt, cooking oils and convenience foods.

Often poor dietary behaviours are adopted during the teenage years long before girls and young women have considered the idea of becoming mothers. The impact of unhealthy lifestyles, poor-quality diets and excess body weight on chronic disease burdens has been explored exhaustively. But the implications for future mothers and the next generation of South Africans has not received the same attention.

In our study we found that women who were accustomed to a more westernised diet gained more weight during pregnancy. This is a diet high in refined carbohydrates such as white bread, processed and red meat, sweets and chocolate and sugar-sweetened soft drinks. So did women whose diets were particularly high in added sugar.

High weight gain increases the risk of giving birth to a large baby. Its also a risk factor for pregnancy complications such as developing high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia and giving birth by caesarean section. Overweight and obese women are particularly vulnerable to gaining excessive amounts of weight during pregnancy, as the recommended range for healthy weight gain is lower than it is for women who conceive at a healthy weight.

On the other hand, women who ate higher amounts of whole grains, legumes, vegetables and unprocessed meat gained less weight during pregnancy and were more likely to gain weight within the healthy range. Their babies also tended to have lower birthweights and less body fat at birth.

These quantifiable differences indicate that a healthy diet during pregnancy really does have beneficial effects on the health of the mother and the newborn, as well as on the newborns risk of developing disease later in life.

But, to make a real impact on the health and well-being of the next generation, it is critical that food and health systems focus on empowering teenage girls and young women to make healthier choices and to improve their diets long before they become pregnant.

NEW BUFFALO New Buffalo Township Supervisor Michelle Heit and Clerk Judy Zabicki participated in a May 22 New Buffalo Business Association Facebook Live chat session during which they discussed the road diet striping on U.S. 12 between the New Buffalo Township line south of the city and the Indiana State line that was put in place just before Memorial Day weekend.

There are two lanes of traffic, a center turn lane, and occasional right turn lanes. U.S. 12 in the New Buffalo area is scheduled to be redone next year, and the current three-lane set-up is a test run to help local leaders decide if they want to continue with the road diet or have a four-lane design as still exists on the remainder of U.S. 12 in New Buffalo.

One participant in the live chat said she saw a few drivers passing in the center turn lane.

Heit urged motorists to take caution when driving on the new stretch of road (a little over two miles), adding that the Sheriffs Department that the township contracts with will be keeping a little extra eye out in that area.

When this is done we can see the data from the summer, she said in reference to a permanent decision on the road design.

Zabicki said more lane painting and the placement of additional signs in the road diet zone are planned in the near future.

New Buffalo City Manager David Richards said the City Council is still considering a trial road diet resolution (votes to approve and reject the plan both ended in 2-2 ties earlier this year).

During the New Buffalo Township Boards May 20 regular meeting, New Buffalo Township Fire Chief Jamie Flick and Zabicki saidupgrades involving fire hydrants, water service and the fire department keeping fantastic (Zabickis description) records on training have upped the townships fire safety ratings enough that Zabicki said a homeowner told her his fire insurance premium dropped enough to cover his water assessment payment.

She urged township property owners to contact their fire insurance agent to check the townships new ISO ratings.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Dan Petersen, executive director of The Pokagon Fund, encouraged township residents to participate in filling out the 2020 U.S. Census, noting that Harbor Country municipalities were behind others in Berrien County according to numbers discussed during a recent Strategic Leadership Council group call (with some local areas in the 20- to 30-percent response rate).

Heit said about 72 percent of the homes in the township are second residences, adding that the Census is being promoted on the townships Facebook page.

Also during the May 20 Township Board meeting:

The board was told by Julie Flick of the Sheriffs Department that there had been a lot of fraud type circumstances in the past two weeks involving texts, emails and other ways of appearing to send people messages from someone they know. She said most involve asking people to buy gift cards or money orders with a time limit involved.

Approved a $93,230 bid from Southwest Transport Company to provide water and sewer extensions for the new public safety building to be constructed along U.S. 12.

The board also agreed to pay Burkholder Excavating $42,500 for the excavation of the building site (which has been completed).

Heit said a sign is slated to go up at the site soon.

Voted in favor of a cross connection ordinance involving water lines and inspections.

OKd a $1,550 survey bid from Abonmarche for 9934 Townline Ave.

Adopted a New Buffalo Township COVID-19 Preparedness Plan that Heit said the state is asking businesses and municipalities to implement and share with employees to help prepare for re-opening.
