Want to protect your brain function? Follow the Mediterranean diet – The Star Online

A new American analysis has found that following the well-known Mediterranean diet appears to be linked with higher cognitive, or brain, function.

Led by researchers at the US National Eye Institute, part of the US National Institutes of Health, the analysis looked at data on 7,756 participants taking part in two major studies investigating eye disease: the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (Areds) and Areds2.

Both of these studies have assessed the effect of vitamins on age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is a neurodegenerative condition that affects the retina, causing loss of central vision and affecting everyday abilities such as seeing faces, driving, reading and writing.

To assess how diet could also affect cognition, the researchers asked the participants to complete questionnaires at the start of the study about their average consumption of nine components of the Mediterranean diet.

This is a diet high in whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes, fish and olive oil, and low in red meat and alcohol.

To look at participants cognition, Areds tested the subjects cognitive function after five years, while Areds2 tested cognitive function at the start of the study and again two, four and 10 years later.

The findings, published in the journal Alzheimers and Dementia, showed that those who followed the Mediterranean diet more closely had the lowest risk of cognitive impairment.

In particular, eating plenty of fish and vegetables appeared to have the greatest protective effect, with Areds2 finding that after ten years of following the participants, those with the highest fish consumption had the slowest rate of cognitive decline.

In addition, the team found that participants with the ApoE gene, which increases the risk of Alzheimers disease, had lower cognitive function scores and greater cognitive decline, on average, than those without the gene.

However, following the Mediterranean diet brought similar benefits to those with and without the ApoE gene, suggesting that the cognitive benefits of diet are independent of genetic risk for Alzheimers disease.

Dementia warning: Certain foods that form the basis of your diet may increase your risk – Express

Dementia is believed to have a number of risk factors, the biggest being age. While some risk factors are genetic and cannot be changed, others, including lifestyle choices, can. Researchers in France have found different combinations of food that form the basis of a persons diet may be associated with the risk of dementia.

The diet found to hold the most risk was one high in processed meats and snack foods.

The research, published online in the scientific journal Neurology, also found more diversity in diet, and greater inclusion of a variety of healthy foods, is related to less dementia.

Dr Sara Imarisio, Head of Research at Alzheimers Research UK, commented on the study: Currently dementia is a terminal illness and once a disease like Alzheimers [a type of dementia] gets underway in the brain there are no treatments that can stop the condition from progressing.

Understanding the different factors that affect our dementia risk is vital for finding new ways to reduce the number of people who develop the condition in the future.

This study adds to existing evidence about the importance of a varied diet that is low in processed meat and dairy but rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, cereals, beans, nuts, fish and healthy fats like olive oil.

But Dr Imarisio did note: We should treat these results with caution, as the study relied on participants accurately filling out a survey, rather than having their food intake monitored.

Further research is needed to understand whether a healthy diet might affect dementia risk in combination with other aspects of healthy living or for particular people with an increased risk of dementia.

While a balanced diet is one way we can help to maintain a healthy brain, the best current evidence points to a number of other lifestyle factors that can also play a role.

Other lifestyle factors that can play a role in reducing a persons dementia risk is not smoking, staying mentally and physically active, drinking within the recommended guidelines and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol in check.

The study asked more than 600 older people in France what foods they ate, then followed them for five years during regularly medical checkups.

At the end of this duration, 209 participants had developed dementia.

When researchers looked at their diets, there isnt much difference in individual foods choices, but there was a significant different on how those with dementia had grouped their foods.

The people who developed dementia were more likely to combine highly processed meats such as sausages cured meats and pates with starchy foods like potatoes, alcohol and snacks like cookies and cakes.

People with no signs of cognitive decline tended to group foods into smaller, more diverse food networks.

Those choices typically included healthier foods, such as seafood, fruits and vegetables.

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I went on a secret diet two weeks ago and gained five pounds! I had coffee for breakfast and ate my diet food for lunch salads, fruit and veggies but my wife would sucker me into eating a "regular dinner" meat with sauces and a pasta dish (were Italian), and then Id have some wine, and break down and eat some of her special desserts.

I think the weight gain is her fault. She knows I have to be on a diet, and isnt helping me at all. Im 45 ugly pounds overweight, according to my doctors scale, and Im borderline diabetic. The doc is concerned and asked me what I intended to do. I said I would lose all the necessary weight ASAP.

My wife is also overweight by about the same amount. I think she doesnt want me to get slim since she isnt anymore. We are at home a lot together kids have flown, virus is happening and she has started baking daily to fill the time, and then cooking these giant meals as if the kids still lived here. How can I handle this problem?

Dear Pre-Diabetic: Ask your wife the big unspoken question, nicely: "Are you worried that if I lose 40 pounds, bad things will happen? Like I would look at you critically, or Id start looking at other women?"

Then emphasize you must lose the weight because youre endangering your life and your doctor says its about to cause a big health problem diabetes. Ask her to consider dieting with you, so the same doesnt happen to her because you cant bear to lose her.

Notice that I didnt suggest you tell her to quit making all those rich foods. That will naturally follow if she agrees to diet. But, if she doesnt agree, youll have to cook plain meats and fish without fattening sauces and refuse her baking and wine, as it breaks down your will.

Definitely ask her to come out on daily walks with you, and go alone if she wont. After you lose the first 10 pounds and it starts showing, she may want to join you. Or not! This is your own health adventure and she may even try to sabotage you because youre making her feel guilty. If you need human support, join a weight-loss group online and youll get lots of it.

Watch out for tricks to get you to stay in, instead of exercising after dinner. "Ill watch that movie with you in an hour, darling," is a nice way to counteract the sabotage. Its much better than squaring up for a fight with, "Are you trying to wreck my diet?"

Psst! Be aware that lovemaking burns off calories and is fun exercise, so itd be wise to keep your partner in a good mood. Good luck!

Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor and his wife Alicia were teasing a big announcement last month, and they spilled the beans during a recent interview they are opening a taco truck!

In a new video interview with Rock Feed, Corey and Alicia revealed they'd been working on this for months, but got set back due to the quarantine. Corey also revealed that the taco truck will be "plant-based" and that a plant-based diet has improved his health dramatically.

"It was basically a [plant-based] taco food truck," he said. "We can't say vegan. 'Cause there will be some dairy in there, some stuff in there. But the main focus was flavor, not just content. 'Cause when people talk about vegan, they can become very pretentious This was a way for us to combine [our love of food] with a healthier [lifestyle]."

Alicia added: "Because a lot of people don't know this we went plant-based in August [or] September, and we saw the benefits immediately." Corey concurred, saying: "My cholesterol dropped, like, 80 point I was even trying to eat better, and yet my cholesterol wasn't going anywhere. And as soon as I [went plant-based], [the change in my cholesterol level was immediate]. It was pretty rad."

Alicia said: "And we don't wanna be super annoying about it, 'cause that can turn a lot of people off. It was just kind of a choice we made for us."

The Taylors got married last August.

As the UK enters its fifth week in lockdown, health service provider, Cigna Europe is urging Brits to remain as connected as possible to mitigate the major health issues social isolation can bring.

With more than nine million people1 regularly experiencing loneliness before the pandemic began, Dr Peter Mills and Dr Inge Schrever, doctors responsible for Cignas medical team, explain why the lack of social interaction and face to face contact with friends and loved ones can lead to a number of health issues, both physically and psychologically.

COVID-19 is not only a life-threatening global health crisis for many societies, its also becoming a major social crisis, says Dr Mills. The pandemic is unprecedented for the entire world, and is having a tremendous impact on healthcare professionals, businesses, and above all, individual people. Were having to adjust to dealing with uncertainty, working differently, having to home school children, and trying to make sure that everybody stays healthy, safe, and is physically active.

Dr Schrever added: Feelings of loneliness can happen because of many factors, however in this current period of social isolation, it most frequently arises because of the forced separation from those we love, or due to the lack of social connections with other people. For this reason, its important to bear in mind that, despite the fact that it is a temporary phenomenon, solitude during the isolation period can, without question, significantly reduce our quality of life, negatively impacting our health and well-being, especially among the most vulnerable groups. Although the seriousness of the situation is undeniable, the good news is that, by applying certain guidelines, we can help curb the feeling of loneliness, so that our health and wellbeing are not affected during this period.

To help people limit the impact of loneliness on their health and wellbeing during this time, Cigna Europe has outlined its top eight tips:

2. Use technology to create emotional connections. Social relationships are essential for both our physical and mental health. Now its more important than ever to maintain regular contact with our social circle. This can be done via video calls, instant messaging or phone conversations. However, we must use these means in a healthy way avoid placing COVID-19 at the centre of all conversations and try to talk about other things that will help distract us.

3. Practice meditation techniques. Mindfulness or conscious breathing can become great allies to calm anxiety and reduce stress. Breathing and meditation exercises can even help delay the ageing of our brain, helping the immune system react more strongly in the production of antibodies.

4. Maintain a certain level of physical activity. Physical exercise helps release endorphins in the brain, so if a certain level of activity is maintained during this period, the production levels of these hormones will remain high. There are many online resources available to help you exercise safely at home, whatever your fitness level.

5. Watch your diet its essential to improve our mood. Since approximately 95% of serotonin the hormone that works as a neurotransmitter and regulates sleep, appetite, and mood is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, a balanced diet will be essential to cope with loneliness, as indicated by Harvard University2. In this way, eating more foods such as white meat, eggs, pulses, whole grains, nuts, seeds, bananas or dark chocolate, always within the limits of a balanced diet, will contribute to improving our mood.

6. Communicate regularly with colleagues. Adjusting to working from home can impact peoples emotional well-being as the work environment is often a place for social interaction. For this reason, its important to continue maintaining regular communication with colleagues, either by phone, email or videoconference.

7. Get some sun, if possible. Sunlight strengthens our immune system and improves our mood, as it stimulates the synthesis of vitamin D, a key substance for the central nervous system that helps control depressive symptoms. Sun exposure should last between 10 and 20 minutes a day.

8. Establish a routine with regular sleep schedules. Its important to set schedules and maintain routines, especially regarding hours of sleep, eating and physical exercise. The longer we are busy, the lesser room for loneliness.

Four healthy eating strategies to work on while staying at home – The Globe and Mail

If youve been wanting to improve your diet, expand your cooking skills, or even lose a few pounds, this is an excellent time to start.

People are hyper-focused on food now, understandably: how to shop for it safely, how to clean it and how to improvise when staples run low. Then theres the cooking (and baking) to do.

Being housebound during the COVID-19 pandemic has made putting home-cooked meals on the table more challenging. But, when it comes to healthy eating, it also presents a real opportunity.

If youve been wanting to improve your diet, expand your cooking skills, or even lose a few pounds, this is an excellent time to start.

Many of my clients, whom Im now working with virtually, have echoed this sentiment. Having greater control over their food environment (e.g., no restaurant eating, social receptions or other distractions) has helped them build a new routine around their diet, one that they feel confident about maintaining when we emerge from this.

Of course, not all of us have been on this path. For some, feeling stressed, anxious and bored has meant regularly turning to high-calorie comfort foods.

Regardless of where you stand on the healthy eating track, consider working toward a positive dietary goal while social distancing. Doing so can help bolster your nutrient intake, your energy level and your mood. Here are four suggestions.

If you start the day with nutrition in mind, youre likely to plan the rest of your meals and snacks in the same vein.

It also creates structure around meal times, something that, for many people, has been disrupted by staying home all the time. Eating breakfast first thing (e.g., before you check e-mails or the news) will help prevent grazing your way through the day.

A nutritious and satiating breakfast should include protein, fibre-rich whole grains, whole fruit and/or vegetables and healthy fats. Build breakfasts around immune-supportive nutrients such as vitamins A, C and E, folate, zinc and omega-3 fats.

Try overnight oats soaked in kefir (a source of gut-friendly prebiotics and probiotics) topped with sliced strawberries (vitamin C; thaw frozen berries in fridge overnight) and chopped walnuts (omega-3s).

Or, whole grain toast spread with mashed avocado (folate) served with a smoothie made with yogurt (vitamin A, zinc), mango (vitamin C) and ground flax (omega-3s).

What to buy if youre worried about the coronavirus

Getting more of your protein from plants versus animals means that youre also getting more fibre, antioxidants and protective plant phytochemicals. Excellent sources of plant protein include beans, lentils, soybeans, edamame, tofu, tempeh, nuts and seeds.

Use kidney beans, black beans and chickpeas to make a vegetarian chili. Add black beans or pinto beans to tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos instead of meat.

Toss white kidney beans into a tomato sauce for pasta; roast chickpeas for snacks; add shelled edamame to stir-fries, salads and soups and make a tofu scrambler for breakfast.

Whole grains deliver some protein, too. Create a plant-based bowl using quinoa, freekeh, farro, red rice, black rice or brown rice.

If youd like to lose some weight, use this time to get a handle on your portion sizes. Pull out the food scale to weigh cooked fish, chicken and meat. In general, aim for three to four ounces (women) or four to six ounces (men).

Use measuring cups for cooked grains and pasta and teaspoons and tablespoons for cooking oil and seeds.

If you prefer to eyeball serving sizes, fill half your plate with vegetables, one-quarter with protein and one-quarter with starchy foods. Consider serving your meal on a luncheon-sized plate (7 to 9 inches in diameter) instead of a dinner plate.

Dont eat out of the bag (or box); measure or count out one serving and put it on a small plate.

Approaching meals and snacks with your full attention can help distinguish between emotional and physical hunger.

To practise mindful eating, take time to sit down, without distractions, to enjoy your meals. Put down your cutlery between mouthfuls and chew thoroughly. Take time to savour your food. Pay attention to its colour, aroma, taste and texture.

Tune in to your hunger cues; eat until you feel satisfied, not full.

How will grocery shopping change after the coronavirus pandemic? – TODAY

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, grocery shopping has transitioned from being a routine errand to a potentially challenging, and even dangerous, task. Many shoppers are awaiting the day when waiting in line before even getting inside the store is a distant memory. But regardless of when that day comes, it's likely the pandemic will transform the way we shop for food for many years to come.

TODAY Food spoke with a few industry insiders to get their take on the future of food shopping. Here are their predictions on what to expect in the post-pandemic era.

According to a consumer behavior survey released by Florida-based marketing agency Acosta, shoppers are currently making 52% fewer trips than they were before the pandemic. And 47% said it's extremely or very likely they'll continue to make fewer trips post coronavirus.

Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietician in based in Chicago, told TODAY Food that most people she knows used to shop for food items almost every other day. "And there would be extra trips to additional stores for specialty items that aren't in their usual store," she added. While she doesn't know if people will stick to the biweekly, one-store shops they're doing now, she agreed that it's unlikely people will be shopping as frequently as before.

The survey also found that nearly half of respondents think they'll continue to stock up more in the future. Now that people have adopted the habit of shopping for seven-plus days at a time, Jackson Blatner said the stockpiling trend is likely to continue, but doesn't think people will continue to hoard such vast quantities of essentials.

"Stocking up is a skill people will likely keep using to save time once regular pace of life takes over again," she said.

The days of spending hours browsing through the aisles may be over. If stores keep up two-cart social distancing rules, the days of impulse buys while waiting to checkout may also be a relic of the past. Instead, expect more lists.

"Right now, we're trying to go to the store as infrequently as possible, which requires forethought and creative menu planning," Trae Bodge, a lifestyle journalist who covers shopping trends, told TODAY. "I can see this kind of efficient shopping continuing once the worst of the pandemic has passed."

But even if menu planning remains a thing, recipes might not. "With fewer trips to the store there's more flexibility and creativity when people don't have all the ingredients a recipe calls for," said Jackson Blatner, who sees cooking "off script" becoming increasingly popular.

Jon Roesser, general manager at Weavers Way Co-op, a small chain of grocery stores in Pennsylvania, told TODAY he predicts customers will continue to want curbside pickup. For the foreseeable future, his stores will continue to offer the service.

Meanwhile, some major grocery chains are looking into offering online shopping only. Online grocery spend in the past month has already doubled, according to a new report by the fulfillment platform Fabric.

"After this is all over, I can see shoppers continuing to order online, especially those who, before COVID, struggled to squeeze shopping into their busy schedules or found shopping to be physically challenging," said Bodge. She credits the coronavirus with forcing older consumers to learn how to use technology to shop. "They'll have figured out the process and will greatly enjoy the benefits."

There was a large outcry when Costco first announced it had suspended in-store sampling back in March, but it's unlikely that many stores are going to bring that practice back anytime soon, experts say. Decreasing touch points and limiting areas where cross-contamination may occur will continue to be a priority for store management teams.

"It's incredibly hard to predict when we'll be able to open things back up for our customers," Roesser said. He also thinks it would be a shame if customers could no longer try before they buy since many of his vendors are from smaller farmers markets and rely on in-store samples to introduce customers to new products.

While not every store can be Costco and have gloved employees handing out samples, he hopes smaller stores will be able to find a different and regulated way to do it safely after the pandemic.

Year-on-year, fresh produce sales have continued to rise. Last month's increase was largely driven by demand for fruits, including oranges and lemons, that last longer. Potatoes have also become more popular. For weeks, they've been the top growth leader for fresh produce according to an industry report.

"Potatoes were demonized by diet trends, but during quarantine they're a life saver," said Jackson Blatner. She predicts that because they're so versatile, potatoes will have a special place in our diets and pantries going forward.

If you've noticed the freezer aisle shelves look emptier than usual, you're not imagining things. Fewer trips to the store means more food needs to be freezer friendly. Some stores are even limiting the amount of frozen vegetables customers can buy. While the practice of limiting might end, demand won't disappear. "People have been reminded of the convenience of frozen veggies so they'll likely stay around post-coronavirus," said Jackson Butler.

When farm-to-table and buy local movements surged in popularity in the early 2000s, frozen and canned goods got a bad rap. But they've made a huge comeback recently. Plus, most frozen produce is just as nutritious as its fresh counterpart.

Canned food is also poised to remain a shopping-cart staple. In fact, many canned goods don't have expiration dates so in theory, they can last for years.

Consumers have become all too familiar with hour-long waits at big-box retailers, so many smaller grocers have seen their businesses boom. Mike Geller, owner and manager of Mike's Organic, a grocery store in Stamford, Connecticut, told TODAY he's seeing an influx of new customers over the past month.

Initially, Geller said he received feedback that shoppers came in because they were "stymied" elsewhere. Now, however, they say they're coming back for the convenience and the diverse organic offerings.

SALT LAKE CITY Have you ever wondered what to do if you find a baby bird while out for a walk or working in the yard?

According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, its not uncommon to find a baby bird lying on the ground near a tree trunk. Many birds often leave their nests before they are able to fly, and some may also be blown out of nests during thunderstorms.

They usually chirp and call from the nest, waiting for their parents to bring food to them, Blair Stringham, migratory game bird program coordinator with the division, said in a statement. Sometimes, that results in them falling from their perch.

If you find a baby bird that doesnt have any feathers, put it back in the nest. If you cant find the nest, put it on a branch safely out of reach of dogs and cats.

The baby will squawk, and its parents will find it, Stringham said.

Dont be concerned about leaving your scent on the bird. Stringham said most birds do not have a good sense of smell, so if you pick a baby bird up, its parents wont even know youve handled it.

If the baby bird has feathers and hopping around, leave it alone. Its a fledgling, meaning it has its flight feathers and is close to taking its first flight.

If the bird isnt in danger, leave it be. This awkward hopping stage typically lasts two to five days. Its part of the natural process a baby bird goes through before taking its first flight. Its parents are watching the baby bird and are still feeding it.

If you think the fledgling is in immediate danger, then move it carefully to a safer spot nearby.

Stringham said people should never take a baby bird home, as most birds are protected by state and federal laws. And never feed a baby bird. Stringham said birds have a very specific diet and feeding them something thats not part of their diet can kill them.

For example, many people are surprised to learn that robins are among only a handful of birds that can safely eat worms. Most birds cant, Stringham said.

My only question: for how long is this sustainable? What about the people who count on their jobs and go to work to make the ends meet?

Like other Americans, the coronavirus potential fills me with confusion. It hurts my heart to see more of our beloved people succumb every day to this alien virus. But Americans are not, nor have we ever been, citizens motivated by terror.

Its the United States of America. We have always been able to compromise, if necessary. Yet, our patience with scientific professionals and their ever-changing data structures can not be forever.

We have to consider if we are ready to become a citizens who cause our civil liberties to be violated forever.

The solution to our dilemma should not have to be linear, however difficult it might be for Dr. Fauci.

We should give our politicians in Washington the benefit of the doubt by pursuing these prolonged lock-down steps into April, but at some stage we need to find the middle ground, and wed better find it soon.

At some point, our economies will come back to boom before we all risk being the victims of another major crisis.
