56% of UAE residents feel they need to improve their diet – Gulf News

Dubai: Almost half (45 per cent) of the people employedin the United Arab Emirates (UAE) revealed they are worried about their long-term health, according to a new study.

They admitted they have not had a health check in the last year and a significant number said they have no idea about the simple metrics of health such as cholesterol levels, according to new research from Aetna International, a global health benefits provider. Inflexible and long working hours are compounding the problemas employees feel unable to take time off to manage their health, says the report.

The findings are revealed in the Business of health 2020 report, how organisations can overcome employee health inertia, which explores the attitudes to health of 4,000 office workers in the UAE, USA, UK and Singapore, focusing on the health fears of todays workers and probing the gaps in their own health knowledge.

Despite the fact that 94 per centof UAE respondents say that they think about their health at least some of the time, 40 per cent admitted that they would not go to the doctor for a general health check-up unless they felt ill, and just over a quarter (27 per cent) say they are too scared to get a health check-up.

In addition, few know of basic indicators of their own health only 35 per cent of UAE respondents know their cholesterol level and just 31 per cent their body fat percentage. However, when compared to respondents from the other countries surveyed, overall employees in the UAE and Singapore have a better knowledge of health measurements like blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) than those in the US or UK.

Most UAE workers acknowledge they could do more to improve their health, with over half (56 per cent) admitting their diet needs improvement and three quarters (75 per cent) saying they need to exercise more. When people do feel ill, however, 39 per cent say they tend to look up symptoms online and self-medicate rather than seeking out a doctor.

Catherine Darroue, Senior Director of Customer Proposition, EMEA, Aetna International, said: While the majority of workers are aware they need to do more to improve their health, fear and worry are causing a huge number to avoid the situation. More should be done to empower people to manage their own health, with a focus on changing company cultures to promote prevention and early intervention. It is not only the responsibility of the employee but also that of the employer to ensure people are equipped to lead healthy lives.

Increasing pressure in the workplace is having a significant impact on how people prioritise their health. Half (50 per cent) of UAE employees surveyed admit that they often feel stressed because of work but dont see a healthcare professional about the issue. Long and inflexible working hours may be to blame, as nearly a third (32 per cent) say they dont have time to be ill at work and a quarter (25 per cent) cite lack of time off from work as the reason behind their health inertia.

Results also indicate that employers could play a bigger role in encouraging people to look after their health, with over a quarter (28 per cent) of office workers admitting they would go to the doctor if their boss told them to. Nearly half (48 per cent) also said the ability to take time off work to go to the doctor would encourage them to make an appointment.

Additionally, better access to online health consultations would encourage just over a third (34 per cent) to get regular check-ups, and an almost equal number (35 per cent) would like the use of an app or online service.

Expanding access to healthcare is imperative to ensure todays time poor workers prioritise their health. Technology can undoubtedly play a role here, but businesses also need to ensure they create a culture where people can talk about and take time for their health needs, concluded Catherine.

Top small daily diet and exercise tips to help cut the fat and avoid diabetes – Mirror Online

Britain is in the grip of a Type 2 diabetes epidemic.

Yet the disease is regarded by many experts as entirely preventable.

With the right diet and lifestyle choices, millions could avoid a deadly condition that raises their risk of heart disease, blindness and amputations.

Crucially, those choices can often be tiny tweaks rather than wholesale changes that involve turning your daily routine upside down.

Its all about setting realistic goals that fit into your current lifestyle, says Natasha Marsland, senior clinical adviser with the charity Diabetes UK.

Even little things can make a significant difference.

So what are the small adjustments you can make that could help to protect you against the scourge of diabetes?

Fighting off diabetes doesnt necessarily mean doing an Adele-like slimathon and shedding huge amounts of weight.

In fact, studies show losing just five to 10% of your total body weight can have a dramatic impact on your risk, slashing it by up to 60%.

To put that in context, somebody weighing 15st (95kg) would need to ditch just 10-11lb (4-4.5kg) to significantly reduce their chances of developing the condition.

A recent study, involving more than 7,000 adults at the University of Texas at Houston, US, found small amounts of weight loss helped, although the more patients shed, the greater the benefits.

Researchers said: If youre overweight or obese, even losing just a little is better than nothing.

But the rewards appear to be greater for those who manage to lose more.

Going for a 10-minute brisk walk after breakfast, lunch and dinner could be one of the best ways to control blood sugar and potentially slash your risk of diabetes.

A 2016 study at the University of Otago in New Zealand found it was better at keeping glucose readings down than a single daily 30-minute walk.

Scientists tracked 41 adults and found shorter, more frequent strolls after large meals cut blood sugar readings by 12% more than a half-hour walk.

Its thought getting up and moving straight after food may be better at controlling the spike which usually occurs in blood sugar scores directly after eating.

Other studies show walking up and down stairs for just three minutes after a meal has the same effect.

A healthy diet is crucial for preventing the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

But certain foods may have a more potent effect than others.

One study in the British Medical Journal found eating just one apple a day can keep the condition at bay but only if you eat it whole rather than juiced.

Scientists at Harvard School of Public Health, US, looked at the effects of various fruits.

Apples, grapes and blueberries seemed to have the most benefit.

Volunteers eating at least two servings a week were 23% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those eating them just once a month or less.

But the same study found that drinking fruit juice every day actually increased the diabetes risk by 21%, due to the high natural sugar content.

Slumping in front of the TV for hours on end is known to be bad for health. But how much telly a day is too much?

According to scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health the answer is anything more than about two hours.

After that, the risks for diabetes and heart disease begin to increase sharply.

They tracked thousands of volunteers and found after two hours, the risk of Type 2 diabetes went up by about 20%.

If they sat in front of the TV for four to six hours, it went up even further. Researchers said in a report on their findings: The message is simple. Cutting back on TV watching significantly reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and premature death.

It might sound like unconventional health advice but enjoying an alcoholic drink each day might actually reduce your risk of Type 2.

Heavy drinking, in excess of government guidelines, is known to be bad for health generally by increasing your calorie intake and the amount of fat you are carrying, making it more likely you could end up with Type 2 diabetes, heart disease or cancer.

But in moderation one drink a day research shows alcohol can actually improve insulin sensitivity. This makes it easier for insulin to open the lock on muscle and tissue cells, so that blood sugar can get in and be burned up as fuel.

Insulin needs to work properly to stop diabetes setting in and tests suggest small amounts of alcohol on a regular basis may help it do so providing its in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Numerous studies have linked regular coffee consumption with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes.

But the latest science suggests the benefits are more likely to be seen with decaffeinated products.

Thats because coffee contains plant chemicals called polyphenols, which are thought to dampen down inflammation inside blood vessels that can lead to complications in Type 2 diabetes.

The beverage also contains minerals like magnesium and chromium both of which have been linked with lower rates of the disease. Caffeine, on the other hand, has been found to damage the way insulin works in the body making it less efficient at getting rid of excess glucose and making it more likely that diabetes could set in.

Sleep deprivation is becoming recognised as one of the major risk factors for Type 2 diabetes.

Studies show people regularly getting six hours or less a night are at a higher risk than those who enjoy seven or eight hours.

The reason is that sleep loss interferes with the release of insulin the hormone that keeps diabetes in check and stimulates the production of stress hormones, like cortisol, which make it even harder for insulin to do its job.

On top of this, insufficient rest increases your appetite and makes you crave carbohydrates and sugary foods.

Scoffing too many of these over a long period of time wreaks havoc with blood sugar levels, making diabetes more likely to develop.

Theyre the breakfast choice of hipsters but avocados could potentially be much more than a tasty treat, according to scientists.

Experts at the University of Guelph in Canada recently discovered making them a regular part of your diet could prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Thats because the fruit contains a compound which, experts believe, can inhibit the cellular processes that lead to the condition.

Tests revealed that avocatin B a fat molecule found only in avocados improves the bodys response to insulin, which makes it better able to burn up the glucose circulating in the bloodstream, thereby reducing the risk of diabetes setting in.

Enjoy them in moderation, however, as avocados are high in fat. And while it is healthy unsaturated fat (rather than unhealthy saturated fat seen in animal products), it is still high in calories and too many could bump up your waistline.

Physical activity is obviously good for warding off diabetes, but could weight training in particular be the key?

One study at Iowa State University , US, found adults on the verge of getting Type 2 diabetes were able to keep it at bay by doing strength-training exercises.

The regime did not mean having to bulk up like an Olympic weightlifter or signing up to an expensive gym. Instead, regular exercises with moderate weights at home could reap the same benefits.

The study found weight training reduced their risk of the illness by 32%, partly because building muscle helps to improve the bodys response to insulin produced by the pancreas.

It also burns up blood sugar, easing the strain on insulin from the pancreas to do the job entirely on its own.

British shoppers spend an estimated 400million a year on rice and the vast majority of this goes on the white variety.

But simply switching to brown rice could work wonders for your health.

White rice is classed as a refined carbohydrate with a high glycaemic index. This means it can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels which, over time, increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Brown rice, on the other hand, has a low glycaemic index which means it is digested more slowly and triggers a smaller and more gentle increase in blood sugar levels.

Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry last year found brown rice triggers a reaction which makes the body more effective at using insulin to control glucose levels.

'The term cystic acne is used to describe large, red, painful, deep lumps that look like boils and represent the most severe form of the condition,' explains consultant dermatologist Dr. Justine Kluk. Like other types of acne think blackheads and pustules these persistent blemishes are caused by an abnormal level of sebum mixing with dead skin cells deep inside our pores. 'This leads to blockages, activation of a bacterium known as cutibacterium acnes and subsequent swelling, pus and inflammation.'

According to Kluk, hormones are a key player in sparking a bout of acne, which explains why you always seem to spot a cyst looming around the same time as your period. This is because hormonal fluctuations can stimulate oil production and thicken the lining of the pores.

Whats more, genetics, our diet and lifestyle can also play a role.

Sadly, eliminating cystic acne isnt as easy as slapping on a face mask and crossing your fingers. If your case is acute, it might be worth considering professional treatment.

'Treatment of cystic acne can be challenging and may require a combination of medicines,' says Dr. Kluk, who advises seeking a referral to a consultant dermatologist. She stresses the importance of making an appointment sooner, rather than later, as leaving things too long may lead to scarring. 'An oral retinoid medication called isotretinoin is often required to control cystic acne. Sometimes oral antibiotics and corticosteroids (which may also be injected into the most inflamed cysts) are also prescribed,' she explains.

Debbie Thomas, skin expert and founder of D.Thomas Clinic, also recommends a course of isotretinoin (aka Roaccutane), for extremely persistent cases of cystic acne. However, this powerful treatment shouldnt be taken lightly. While it can be incredibly effective in suppressing excess oil production and turning over dead skin cells, there are many less appealing side effects to consider, and lifestyle changes that must be made all of which will be explained by your dermatologist.

'On lower doses and if monitored correctly, there is much less risk of unwanted side effects with Roaccutane,' says Thomas. 'Just remember, your skin will become more sensitive while taking it, so be gentle and protect it from the sun every day with an SPF 50.'

Next up, lasers. Thomas highly recommends a course of laser facial treatments, which can be cocktailed with microneedling sessions (do not try this at home), and salon-strength peels.

'The key is to go to someone who is experienced at managing acne-prone skin. I find I have to tailor the treatment to each person to get the best results. A point to remember is that acne is closely linked to hormones, so it is triggered internally, and the symptoms show externally. This means that there is no real cure for acne but rather ways to manage the symptoms so prepare for a long-term plan and not a quick fix.'

At-home treatments for cystic acne do exist, though and they can be pleasingly effective when it comes to mild-to-moderate cases.

Like most experts, Thomas considers retinol the most powerful and proven ingredient when it comes to treating acne but you must use it correctly, and be patient.

'Retinol can now be bought over the counter at a 0.5% strength, or you can get a prescription from your doctor for 1% or higher. You need to use retinol consistently and regularly for 6-12 weeks to see the results,' she says. Its best to introduce your skin to this ingredient slowly: try applying it every other night for the first fortnight. If that still leaves you with dryness and irritation, try scaling back to one application every third night.

Another option is salicylic acid. 'Its oil-soluble so it can penetrate much deeper than other acids, and is also slightly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory,' says Thomas. Again, this pore-clearing acid can be drying, so always layer a light hydrator on top.

'Also avoid overly drying products,' she says. 'Drying out the surface just causes more redness and irritation but will rarely penetrate deep enough to effect the cyst.'

Towneley House care home ‘falling apart’ as disputed infection risk laid bare – LancsLive

A care home criticised by inspectors from England's healthcare watchdog has disputed the findings after a resident told inspectors that the place is 'falling apart'.

Towneley House in Burnley has been rated as 'requires improvement' by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following a visit in November 2019.

In the report, published last Wednesday (January 29), concerns were found regarding safety issues and infection prevention.

Particular issue was raised in relation to one insanitary bedroom.

Residents were deemed to be at risk of cross contamination, with the same mop and bucket being used to clean the rest of the home after the bedroom was finished with.

There was no system in place for deep cleaning and foot operated pedal bins were still not in place as recommended at inspectors' last visit.

The CQC also reported that "most people's" bedrooms were stark and not personalised. The walls in one person's room was chipped in several places and unsightly expanding foam was hanging from the ceiling.

One resident told inspectors: "I think the actual property is actually falling apart, I feel sorry for staff who have to put up with it.

"It's shabby in places, it wouldn't take long to touch it up."

Some corridors were dark and lighting was not working, with staff ensuring inspectors that new lightbulbs were on order.

There was also a broken toilet, rubbish bags in the garden and sealant around the kitchen sink which needed replacing.

Call bells were not working in some people's rooms when tested and inspectors found one person did not have one.

These rooms were on the third floor and quite isolated so people would not be able to call for assistance, the report said.

Overall, the home was rated as 'requires improvement' as well as in the individual categories regarding safety, effectiveness, responsiveness, and leadership.

It was found to be 'good' in the category concerning care.

Confidential information was not stored securely and complaints were not always being dealt with appropriately, inspectors noted. But medicines were managed safely and management had improved.

Residents were given a balanced diet and they voiced their happiness with the meals, but the service only had a one-star food hygiene rating.

Staff assured inspectors that improvements had been made and they were awaiting re-inspection.

Residents said their privacy and dignity was respected, with staff treating them well and letting them living as independently as possible if that was their wish.

In a statement to LancsLive, the management of Towneley House revealed that it has challenged the CQC over "certain facts", particularly in regards to concerns over infection prevention and safety.

They said: "At this time the management has returned an action plan to CQC. In it we have disputed certain facts.

"In relation to the home being unsafe and placing residentsat risk of infection, the alert relates to a person's bedroom and not the whole building.

"The room in question is occupied by a person who has very complex needs but does have full capacity and fully aware of his actions.

"The person trashes the bedroom on a daily basis, which hascaused severe damage to the room. In actual fact this person has had the room refurbished on three occasions, the last being just after the inspection.

"The room was plastered, redecorated new sink, wall cabinet, new flooring, new curtains and soft furnishings.

"Within ten days the person had once again damaged and defaced the room.After the inspection, Lancashire County Council safeguarding team were initially informed of the inspectorate'sfindings.

"Representatives from the safeguarding team visited the home and found that the alert was unsubstantiated. We cannot, however, give too much information as we also have a duty of care to the person and the right to respect his privacy."

Management added: "The home has a robust cleaning regime to meet current IPC [infection, prevention, and control] legislation, weekly audits are carried out by the manager, and all faults and required repairs dealt withimmediately.

"We feel that we meet infection control standards for this persons room. A separate cleaning schedule is in use and separate cleaning equipment for this room is used at all times.

"Documentation to verify this is completed on a daily basis.Infection prevention control nurse has previously carried out an inspection of the home, and standards where being met.

"We feel that this report portrays the home in a negative manner. It does not give a true picture of the complexity of the situation.The management is currently working with the persons social workers to find a solution to the problem."

Towneley House has been rated as 'requires improvement' in 2015.

The CQC report adds: "We will meet with the provider following this report being published to discuss how they will make changes to ensure they improve their rating to at least good. We will work with the local authority to monitor progress. We will return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner."

Footprint's algorithm calculates an annual carbon footprint, then averages it out to a per-week measure. This way, users know their goals and the app sends them suggestions and challenges, like "meatless Mondays," to help reduce their emissions.

"For one person, it doesn't seem like there's much that you can do," Stormer says. "But the number of people across the world that care about climate change it's actually a majority, at this point."

The inspiration for the Paleo diet is ancient, literally. The creators of this diet feel that the human body is meant to eat the way many believe our ancestors did, way back when in the paleolithic age. Founder Dr. Loren Cordain believes that our bodies were programmed to eat this way and that he and his team have simply done the work of gathering the science behind the paleo diet.

So, how did humans eat in the paleolithic era? According to Cordain, they definitely didnt eat like we do in the Western world. There were no refined grains or sugars and humans ate what could be hunted or gathered. Thinking about giving the Paleo diet a try for yourself? Heres what you need to know first.

The Paleo diet is a diet of whole foods that is heavy in fruits, vegetables and meats. The educators behind the diet refer to these foods often as nutrient-dense foods because of what they bring to the table. They contain a lot of vitamins and minerals and contribute to your daily nutrition goals.

Paleo dieters are encouraged to focus on high-quality protein like grass-fed meat and seafood. Avoid grain-fed meat.

Most contain too many grains and processed sugar.

While many people consider beans, chickpeas and peanuts to be a healthy part of any diet, the Paleo diet advises their followers to exclude them from their meals.

Paleo focuses more on listening to your bodys hunger cues. On the flip side, feel free to skip a meal if you dont feel hungry.

This includes margarine, canola oil, safflower oil and sunflower oil. Instead opt for olive oil and avocado oil.

Because Cordain himself began his career doing academic research, it isnt surprising to know there is quite a bit of data on the benefits of this diet. A 2007 study compared the Paleo diet to the Mediterranean diet, looking specifically at how the diet affects glucose tolerance. Side by side, participants following the guidelines of the Paleo diet exhibited the most notable changes in their glucose. Additionally, the dieters following the Paleo diet experienced the biggest difference in their waist measurements after 12 weeks.

In 2010, Nutrition and Metabolism also found that, when compared to the Mediterranean diet, individuals with heart disease who followed the Paleo diet were able to satiate their hunger and cravings while consuming fewer calories.

Additionally, the Clinical Journal of Lipidology found that 60 days on the Paleo diet resulted in decreased triglyceride numbers, weight loss and improved blood pressure. There were no notable changes to LDL cholesterol.

Beware bath bombs. Some additives in bath bombs can cause yeast infections or skin irritation. Reduce this risk by staying in the water just until fingers and toes start to wrinkle, about 10 to 15 minutes, and rinsing off after the bath to remove the residual chemical layer.

There are a few risks and side effects you want to be aware of before you start the Paleo diet. Some have expressed concerns about the potential for vitamin D and calcium deficiencies, which can be experienced by those dont find an alternative source for these nutrients after giving up dairy and grains. Additionally, even though the Paleo diet doesnt encourage excessive consumption of red meat, it is incredibly easy to over-do meat consumption while on the Paleo diet. This could put long-term dieters at an increased risk of heart disease.

If you still want to try the Paleo diet, smart planning can help you avoid these risks. Eat vegetables containing calcium and vitamin D or take a supplement. Stick with lean proteins and avoid red meat beyond the occasional treat.

The transition to Paleo comes with side effects, too, but most of them wear off with time. Many people describe experiencing the low-carb flu (also known as the keto flu), which makes them feel fatigued, moody, nauseous and achy. This typically goes away with time as your body adjusts to life without processed sugar and grains.

While there is technically only one Paleo diet, there are plenty of ways people have made adjustments to the plan to fit their lifestyles. For example, some may eat to follow the autoimmune protocol, which may mean they have further restrictions. Since Paleo technically isnt low carb, there are some who make adjustments to what they eat to mimic the keto diet while eating Paleo-approved foods.

If you want to succeed on the Paleo diet, prepare yourself to eat a lot of produce. Both fruits and vegetables should be the foundation of every meal. From there, make sure you shop for high-quality protein, like grass-fed beef and free-range eggs. Seafood is allowed on this diet and salmon makes a great addition to a well-rounded diet thanks to the fatty acids it contains. The fat in your diet should come from approved sources, like nuts, seeds and oils.

A great way to meal plan for success on the paleo diet is to think about the foods you like to eat and look for recipes that have been paleo-fied. What is the GOLO diet? Why experts question its weight-loss claims – Insider – INSIDER

The GOLO diet is a weight loss program marketed by the company GOLO For Life.

The official website says that the GOLO diet is different from other fad diets because it focuses on "increasing metabolic efficiency" and rebalancing hormones, rather than just counting calories.

There's limited research on the diet's effectiveness for weight loss, and some of the few studies that have been done were funded by GOLO For Life. Here's what you should know about GOLO and it's diet program.

GOLO was founded in 2009 by a group of doctors, researchers, and marketing strategists. The name is short for the company motto: "Go lose weight. Go look great. Go love life."

The diet started to catch on in 2016 and 2017, according to Google Trends, and at the close of 2019, it seemed to peak interest, yet again ending up on the US News & World Report's most popular diet of 2019.

Marketers of the GOLO diet claim that, with proper nutrition and a supplement called Release, it can restore your insulin sensitivity and metabolic health.

What exactly GOLO considers "proper nutrition" is unclear. The website emphasizes "foods that contain the nutrients you need and fuel your metabolism."

In order to access the full GOLO's dieting guide, you have to pay $50 to $100 for a bottle of the company's controversial Release supplement, which is developed by GOLO's in-house researchers and pharmacists and, like most dietary supplements, not FDA approved for weight loss.

You can get some idea of what types of food the GOLO diet promotes by checking the meals pictured on the site. They're made up of proteins, vegetables, and unprocessed carbohydrates. The company also emphasizes calorie restriction, based on the 1300 to 1500 calorie diet they model on their website.

The tenants of the GOLO diet, eating mostly unprocessed foods, are backed by evidence to help people lose weight. Moreover, multiple forms of calorie-restriction have repeatedly shown to help people lose weight and improve insulin sensitivity how effectively your body responds to insulin, a hormone critical in metabolism.

However, the scientific evidence behind the GOLO diet's eating plan, specifically, is limited. The website links to four studies: two were not peer-reviewed and the remaining two studies were published but funded by GOLO For Life.

Also, the 2019 study that suggests investing in the diet's Release supplement can lead to greater weight loss is questionable, says Jose Aleman, an endocrinologist at NYU who studies obesity told Insider.

Specifically, Aleman takes issue with how the study was conducted to achieve this result.

The study, which was funded by GOLO For Life, included 68 patients all of whom were on the GOLO diet eating plan. Half took the Release supplement while the other half took a placebo. The results show that those on Release lost more weight, but on closer look, the average starting weights for the two groups were very different: 213 pounds in the placebo group vs. 240 pounds in the Release group.

Heavier patients lose weight faster, Aleman says. Not to mention, improvements in insulin resistance are most dramatic with the loss of the first 10 pounds which happened in the heaviest group first, as we'd expect. Because the groups were so different at baseline, their weight loss difference is not likely to be the result of the supplement, Alemen says.

The bottom line is that the GOLO diet's attention to eating unprocessed foods and restricting calories will likely help you to lose weight. However, investing in their Release supplement may not be the best use of your money.
