Dementia is an umbrella term for a collection of symptoms associated with brain damage by diseases, which tends to affect people over the age of 65, although it is not a natural part of ageing. While there is no certain way to ward off dementia, research is increasingly suggesting a healthy lifestyle can help reduce a persons risk of developing dementia. The growing consensus among experts is that what is good heart is also good for the brain, which also means the dietary decisions that are bad for the heart may also be harmful for the brain.

High-salt intake, which can send a persons blood pressure reading soaring and raise the risk of developing cardiovascular complications, is a good example.

Further supporting evidence that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain, a new study published in Nature showed that a high-salt diet may impair cognitive function by causing a deficiency of the compound nitric oxide, which is vital for maintaining vascular health in the brain, according to Weill Cornell Medicine researchers.

The investigators sought to understand the series of events that occur between salt consumption and poor cognition and concluded that lowering salt intake and maintaining healthy blood vessels in the brain may "stave off" dementia.

"Our study proposes a new mechanism by which salt mediates cognitive impairment and also provides further evidence of a link between dietary habits and cognitive function," said lead study author Dr. Giuseppe Faraco, an assistant professor of research in neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine.

The new study advances research published last year in Nature Neuroscience by Dr. Faraco and senior author Dr. Costantino Iadecola, director of the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and the Anne Parrish Titzell Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine.

The 2018 study found that a high-salt diet caused dementia in mice, showing that the rodents became unable to complete daily living tasks such as building their nests and had problems passing memory tests.

After ruling out the theory that high salt intake was restricting blood flow in the mice, the researchers posited that high salt consumption may cause tau proteins in the brain to become unstable.

The protein tau is known to form tangles in the areas of the brain important for memory and then move through the brain as symptoms progress, and increasing evidence suggests this process may be an underlying trigger of brain decline.

Although further research on salt intake and cognition in humans is needed, the current mouse study is a further warning sign to regulate salt consumption, Dr. Iadecola said.

He continued: And the stuff that is bad for us doesn't come from a saltshaker, it comes from processed food and restaurant food.

"We've got to keep salt in check. It can alter the blood vessels of the brain and do so in a vicious way."

In addition to high-salt consumption, inactivity is another risk factor for heart disease that may also increase a persons risk of developing dementia.

As the NHS explains: A lack of regular physical activity can increase your risk of heart disease, becoming overweight or obese, and type 2 diabetes all of which are risk factors for dementia.

As the health body notes, older adults who don't exercise are also more likely to have problems with memory or thinking (known as cognitive abilities).

It recommends aiming for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, such as brisk walking, cycling or dancing, and you should also do strengthening exercises twice a week, such as gardening or yoga to reduce your risk.

The result of an analysis of 11 studies investigating the link between middle-aged people and the effects of physical exercise on their thinking and memory in later life found that underlines the importance of regular exercise in reducing the risk of developing dementia.

As Alzheimers UK reports, the findings show that regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia by about 30 percent, and for Alzheimer's disease specifically, the risk was reduced by 45 percent.

One particular study looked at health behaviours of over 2,000 men in Wales, and followed them for 35 years.

Of the five behaviours that were assessed (regular exercise, not smoking, moderate alcohol intake, healthy body weight and healthy diet), exercise had the greatest effect in terms of reducing dementia risk.

Overall, people who followed four or five of the above behaviours were up to 60 percent less likely to develop dementia.

Removing a food group can leave slimmers lacking in certain things and the expert explained how to compensate for this.

When you cut out an entire food group, there is the potential to be lacking in key nutrients, he said.

Research conducted with 28 obese and overweight adult volunteers found that those who observed a keto-diet lost more fat compared to those who followed a low-fat diet. More interestingly, those following a ketogenic diet were able to drastically reduce, in some cases, remove visceral fat from their bodies.

The study also proved that low-carb diets like keto-diet are very effective in weight loss programs and, more importantly, holds the key to removing the dangerous visceral fat. This is because low-carb diets act quickly to remove the bodys excess water, thus reducing insulin levels and at the same time, causing rapid weight loss.

In other studies that seek to compare low-fat with low-carb diets, researchers found that those who limit their carb intake lost more weight without going hungry. Researchers also revealed that the efficacy of low-carb diets could last up to six months compared to other weight loss diet plans.

Americans still clinging to the idea that their candidate lost the 2016 election because of meddling by the Russian state have much in common with victims of brainwashing cults. For them, doctrine has eclipsed reality.

Russiagate true believers are already screaming about foreign interference in the 2020 election and it hasnt even happened yet. Months after the long-awaited special counsels report failed to serve up the promised evidence ofRussian collusion,they have held fast to their conviction that President Donald Trump is a Russian asset placed in office by Vladimir Putin, and the intelligence agencies that serve as their oracles have predicted furthermeddlingwill occur to keep him in office. Indeed, their beliefs only grow stronger the more contrary evidence is presented, to the point where they have more in common with a cult than any other political group.

Russiagaters are back in the headlines after the Justice Department, the Pentagon, and a cluster of intelligence agencies released a joint statement onensuring securityfor the 2020 elections on Tuesday. But to be fair, they never really left. Just last month, they were pearl-clutchingabout Russianson Facebook targeting Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden, and before that, it was a non-story about Trump supposedly telling Russian officials he wasnt concerned about the (still-unproven, but whos counting)Russian interferencein the 2016 election.

Theres no such thing as a negative Russiagate story, and even if Trump is ousted from office and replaced with a safely Russophobic warmonger like Biden, the election will be presented as a narrow victory over the forces of Russian meddling. If Trump wins in the absence of Russian interference, Russiagaters will claim there was a coverup. If intelligence agencies claim there was, but fail to show proof, as they did in 2016, it will be because the proof has to stay classified. If they declare there was meddling, and show reality-based proof which hasnt happened yet for any of the elections deemed to involve Russian meddling - then, and only then, can the story be trusted. This is not how reality works.

Such unshakeable faith is typically the domain of religion, not politics. But three years after the initial claims of Russian meddling in the US election, with the sanguine early predictions Trump would be running home to Putin within months having thoroughly collapsed, Russiagate resembles nothing so much as a fringe religious cult. The devotees of high priests Rachel Maddow and Bill Maher may not have a deity, but they have their saints former FBI director James Comey, former special counsel Robert Mueller, and failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who continues to play the part of the martyr in interviews. On the side of evil is, of course, Vladimir Putin, portrayed as omnipotent Russiais behind all domestic discord and will shut off your heat in the middle of the winter on a lark and irresistible, with a few Facebook groups and clumsy memes somehow enough to induce black voters to elect a Russian asset.

Led by Maddow and Maher, certain mainstream media figures have set themselves up as apriest class,urging viewers to allow them to interpret primary sources such as the Democratic National Committee emails released by WikiLeaks in lieu of reading them themselves. CNNs Chris Cuomo led the establishment of this caste, warning viewers the month before the election that they werenot allowedto read WikiLeaks publications that was for journalists to do. The media can thus smooth over any logical inconsistencies with the collusion doctrine and memory-hole the really inconvenient primary sources. Believers faith is thus protected, dissenting reports rejected (after all, if it was legitimate, it would be printed or discussed in the mainstream media), and doubters frozen out in a phenomenon cult expert Robert J Lifton callsmystical manipulation. In fact, most of the characteristics Lifton includes in his checklist for brainwashing cults are fulfilled by Russiagaters.

Cultists are kept from straying too far intowrongthinkthrough thought-stopping techniques they are taught by other members early on. For Russiagate, this manifests in buzzwords likefake newsand the smearing of all non-mainstream sources as unreliable. True cultists will cut entire websites out of their news diet, lest they be exposed toRussian disinformationcarefully disguised as, say, American conservatism (Breitbart, Infowars) or peace activism (antiwar.com, the Ron Paul Institute). Even aggregators like Drudge Report have been smeared by thePropOrNot listlater used, more disturbingly, by more authoritative voices like the Poynter Institute in an attempt to smear entire sections of the web as disinformation andfake news.Suchmilieu controlkeeps cultists safe in their echo-chambers.

By controlling a persons information environment, it becomes much easier to control their thoughts. Brainwashing cults demand purity from their members, and both impure thoughts perusingfake newsor having civilized online chats with dissenters and impure people must be jettisoned. If you cant convert your friends (or family, or spouse!) to see things your way politically, ditch them, a surprising number of articles recommended around the 2016 election. This is no different than a cult demanding followers cut off family members who frown on its activities. Cults know that without a strong support system, it can be difficult to leave.

Sacred scienceis another hallmark of brainwashing cults, referring to unquestionable doctrine and the discouragement of questioning. Many elements of the Russiagate conspiracy theory CrowdStrikes assessment that the DNC fell victim toRussian hacking,delivered to the FBI without the actual server; the claim that the Internet Research Agency somehow changed voters minds with a few hundred thousand dollars worth of goofy memes, many of which were posted after the election require a complete suspension of ones critical faculties. The Hamilton68Russian botdashboard, cited by dozens of publications to support the claim that the Kremlin is steering political conversation on social media, has seen one creator largely disavow it (Im not convinced on this bot thing,Clint WattstoldBuzzfeed last year) and the other exposed as the leader of his own election-swaying faux-Russian bot armies.Yet theRussian bots persuading people on social medianarrative persists, even when its targets reveal themselvesto be humans.

The most disturbing element of a true brainwashing cult isdispensing of existence,the cult leaders ability to determine who lives or dies (sometimes metaphorically, by being excommunicated, but sometimes literally). Russiagaters are quick to label their enemies traitors former CIA director John Brennan infamouslyaccusedthe president of treason last year, a crime that has a very specific meaning for an intelligence official who deliveredkill listsweekly to the desk of former president Barack Obama. Brennan is not the leader of the Russiagate cult per se, but the investigation currently being conducted into the operations roots seems to point to the intelligence community, and recentlyturned intoa criminal investigation.

Less powerful Russiagaters are fond of denouncing their enemies as Russians (and by extension less than human recall former Director of National Intelligence James Clappers conviction that Russians aregenetically driven to co-opt, penetrate and gain favor,unlike the rest of humans who are presumably trustworthy types who never lie under oath). Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul have all been tarred with the Russiagaters brush recently, given cringe-inducing nicknames likeMoscow MitchandRed Paulfor disagreeing with doctrine. In medieval times, heretics were burned at the stake; now they areburnedon social media.

Perhaps sensing the cults days are numbered, Brennan recently backpedaled in his conviction that Russians stole the 2016 election. Russian meddlingchanged the mind of at least one voter,he hedged at the National Press Club last week, not long after an enthusiastic colleague caused him to cringe by cheeringThank God for the Deep State!Russiagate may not be over the warning from the intelligence agencies suggests they are preparing yetanother excusein case they lose the election but when it does end, it will be with the saddest of whimpers.

How fast food chains are feeding on healthy diets – Fox Business

FOX Business' Lauren Simonetti, Stuart Varney and Ashley Webster break down research revealing the number of orders at fast-food restaurants depending on calories.

American eaters want fast food made with fresh produce and better-for-you ingredients.

Eighteen percent of Americans reported health as a top concern, second only to the economy (22 percent), according to Nielsen data.And fast food restaurants are feeding the demand with nutritious options, while traditional chains continue to adapt.

Within the restaurant industry, healthy is no longer a buzzword it's a necessary component for meeting today's consumer needs and preferences, Jeff Williams, senior vice president of retail services at Nielsen told FOX Business.Consumers are striving to live healthier lifestyles and therefore hungry for healthier food options."

Popular London-based chain LEON, which bills itself as offering naturally fast food, opened its first locations in downtown Washington,D.C., in September with plans for national expansion in the coming months. It offers Mediterranean inspired items like falafel wraps, vegan burgers and salads. Its Seoul meatless burger, made witha beetroot patty with kimchi, costs $7.97. To compare, a burger at McDonalds is costs about$3.79, and Shake Shack charges $5.29 for a ShackBurger.

Despite higher menu prices, consumers seem to be willing to pay more for healthy options. A Nielsen Global Health & Wellness Survey that polled more than 30,000 people in 2015 found that 88 percent said theyd shell out more money for healthier food.

More Americans are striving to live healthier lifestyles by following niche diets. Indeed, 37 percent now follow a specific diet, such as Keto, Paleo or Whole 30, which is up 8 percentage points from 2016, according to Nielsen data. And of those diets that are low in carbs, sugar, sodium and high in protein and fiber were on the rise.

At Leon, diners can filter their dietary restrictions via the chains online ordering menu with options like I dont eat gluten or Id like a meal under 500 calories. And other chains have tailored menus to capitalize on niche diets, particularly around the New Year when people are making resolutions to eat better. Chipotle rolled out its ketogenic diet-friendly bowls a diet that relies heavily on grass-fed meat, fish and vegetables with salad bowls loaded with protein in the form of carnitas pork, peppers, onions and tomato salsa without its signature rice and beans combo since grains and legumes are not permitted in the diet.

Similarly, West Coast-based burger chain In-N-Out started offering a secret menu with keto options that swap out buns for a lettuce wrap. And Chic-fil-A has a keto-friendly menu that offers less than 10 grams of carb,like a grilled chicken sandwich without the bun, or a sausage egg and cheese minus the biscuit,to eaters so they can stay on track with their diets.

Others have committed to cleaner food options.

Panera Bread promoted its breakfast sandwiches earlier this year as made with 100 percent real eggs. It had a leg up on the competition since some chains serve frozen egg sandwichs, which often come made with additives like soybean oil, xantham gum and whey to help preserve them.

When considering the better-for-you option to order when dining out at a fast-food chain, registered dietician and nutritionist Sharon Zarabi says look at the ingredients list and keep in mind that less is more.

Try and stick with foods with minimal ingredients. Vegetable patties, veggie burgers, and most of the imposter meats have the same amount of fat and sodium as a typical hamburger, so it's important to read the nutrition facts in the fast-food chain websites, Zarabi said.

Itemslike grilled chicken sandwiches served without mayo (370 calories, 7 grams of fat at Burger King); a half-size Harvest Chicken Salad from Wendys (320 calories, 15 grams of fat); and grilled chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A (185 calories, 3.5 grams of fat), are abetter-for-you bet when browsing the menu at traditionalfast food restaurants.

Full name

Her full title is Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York. She is the Queens sixth grandchild and is currently ninth in the line of succession.

Education

Eugenie started her education at Winkfield Montessori before heading to Upton House School and Coworth Park School.

She then attended St.Georges School in Windsor before completing her A levels in Art, English Literature, and History of Art at Marlborough College.

To undertake her Bachelors degree in English Literature, History of Art and Politics, Eugenie attended Newcastle University.

Eating a poor diet has been found to lead to visceral fat build up, so making changes to the food youre eating is advised.

Diet plans come highly recommended for weight loss and fat loss, but with so many diets to choose from, which one is considered best?

Low-carb diets have been found to help get rid of visceral fat, and one in particular proven effective is the ketogenic, or keto, diet.

The keto diet shares many similarities with the Atkins diet, drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat.

A reduction in carbs puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

A study involving 28 overweight and obese adults found those who followed a ketogenic diet lost more fat, especially visceral fat, than people following a low-fat diet.

The participants also did this while eating roughly 300 more calories per day.

Low-carb diets in general have been shown to be key to visceral fat loss.

A greater proportion of the fat people lose on low-carb diets seems to come from the abdominal cavity.

Low-carb diets have also been shown to lead to more weight loss at first.

Studies demonstrate people on low-carb diets lose more weight, faster, than those on low-fat diets.

This is believed to happen because low-carb diets act to rid excess water from the body, lowering insulin levels and leading to rapid weight loss in the first week or two.

In studies comparing low-carb and low-fat diets, people restricting their carbs sometimes lose two to three times as much weight, without being hungry.

One study in obese adults found a low-carb diet particularly effective for up to six months, compared to a conventional weight loss diet.

But after that, the difference in weight loss between diets was insignificant.

Diet isnt the only way to get rid of visceral fat - regular aerobic exercise has also been shown to be effective.

An analysis of 15 studies in 852 people compared how well different types of exercise reduced visceral fat without dieting.

The authors found moderate and high-intensity aerobic exercises were most effective at reducing visceral fat without dieting.

But combining regular aerobic exercise with a healthy diet is more effective at targeting visceral fat than doing either one alone.

Examples of aerobic exercise include brisk walking, riding a bike, hiking and pushing a lawnmower.

As part of government guidelines, adults aged 19 to 64 should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week alongside strength exercises on two or more days a week.
