Montana No. 1 for wasting milk – The Missoulian

Posted: February 12, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Montana is No. 1 in something; yeah! But we shouldn't cheer. A Missoulian article (Feb. 1), page A7, reviews a pending Montana bill about the dating of milk. Admittedly not a very exciting topic, unless you consider that the current Montana rule was recently selected as a national poster child for how state laws force extravagant waste of food.

The current Montana rule requires milk to be labeled with a "sell by" date that is 12 days after pasteurization. This is the shortest such sale date in the country; most states have no "sell by" date at all. After reaching the "sell by" date Montana retailers must throw out unsold milk; it can't even be donated, even though studies have shown that milk is good much, much longer. And Montana consumers, not understanding this "dating game," may also throw out good milk. Not only is good milk wasted, but reports have shown that milk costs more in Montana. So the 12-day rule, promulgated by the Board of Livestock, causes good milk to be thrown out and consumers to pay more for milk. Great to be No. 1!

A 2015 legislative proposal to dump the 12-day rule was voted down in a House committee. Now, the 2017 proposal mentioned in the Missoulian article proposes a smaller step of keeping the 12-day "sell by" date but adding a "best by" or "use by" date indicating the number of days after pasteurization that the milk should be fresh and safe for consumers. Thanks to Rep. Greg Hertz, Polson, for his continuing efforts to help out the average Montanan. Unfortunately, keeping the 12-day rule will likely keep Montana the No. 1 national example for food waste.

How a low-carb, high-fat diet can have its benefits – El Paso Times

Posted: February 12, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Victor R. Martinez , El Paso Times 5:00 a.m. MT Feb. 12, 2017

Alexander is on the Ketogenic Diet. Some of the foods in the diet are on the table.(Photo: RUDY GUTIERREZ / EL PASO TIMES)Buy Photo

A typical breakfast for Alexander Cisneros is a two-egg omelette with spinach sauteed in coconut oil and full-fat cheese.

And for lunch or dinner his mother, Gladys Cisneros, prepares four ounces of fish, chicken or beef with a half a cup of bell peppers, asparagus or broccoli sauteed in real butter and smothered in cheddar cheese.

For dessert it's jello made with heavy whipped cream or a fat bomb, whipped cream mixed with Stevia, a natural sweetener made from the Stevia leaf.

Not exactly what many people would consider a healthy diet.

But for Alexander, his mother and his sister Jacqueline, it works.

"There's three of us on the diet for three different purposes," Cisneros said. "He is onit because he has multiple disabilities, one of them being epilepsy so he is on it to address the epileptic seizures. My daughter is on it because she's a competitive swimmer with WETT. I do it because it helps to balance my hormones. Being middle aged, it affects my body. Plus it helps my energy level."

The Cisneros family is on the ketogenic diet, a very low-carb diet which turns the body into a fat-burning machine.

"Half the time, you can't even finish your meal because it's so rich and so good," Cisneros said. "Alexander has three meals a day, plus I'll send him a snack like pork rinds."

A plate of ground beef cooked in oil with avocados, tomatoes and green beens could be a typical lunch plate in the Ketogenic Diet.(Photo: RUDY GUTIERREZ / EL PASO TIMES)

Studies have found that this very low-carb, high-fat diet is effective for weight loss, diabetes and epilepsy. Theres also early evidence to show that it may be beneficial for certain cancers, Alzheimers disease and other diseases, too.

"It's a high fat, low carbohydrate, adequate protein diet where we restrict the carbohydrates," said Franco Lopez, a licensed dietitian with the Hospitals of Providence. "It's called the modified ketogenic diet which is a little more liberal than the classic ketogenic diet. The classic ketogenic diet has to be measured with grams with a scale so it was very strict. This one is more liberal where you can eat more vegetables."

A ketogenic diet is similar to other strict low-carb diets, such as the Atkins diet or LCHF (low carb, high fat). A ketogenic diet typically limits carbs to 2050 grams per day.

A hamburger patty without the bun and bacon strips topped with sliced avocados, onions and tomatoes is a typical dinner plate in the Ketogenic Diet.(Photo: RUDY GUTIERREZ / EL PASO TIMES)

According to the Epilepsy Foundation, the ketogenic diet is one of the oldest treatments for epilepsy. It is intended to maintain the starvation or fasting metabolism over a long time. When the body is in a fasting state, it creates ketones, a by-product of fat-burning metabolism. It has been established that seizures often lessen or disappear during periods of fasting in some individuals with epilepsy.

"A lot of people are afraid of the amount of fat consumed in this diet," Lopez acknowledged. "But there's a big misconception that fat is harmful when in reality it's the carbohydrates that are causing the harm. Unfortunately what is being promoted is low fat, high carbohydrates so my role is to do seminars and educate people and have kids not only with epilepsy but who have elevated cholesterol in their diet, kids with diabetes, people with a brain tumors; I have a patient with a brain tumor which has been shrinking."

Lopez sees patients Monday through Friday at the Specialty Clinic at The Hospital of Providence Children's Hospital.

"I have about 40 to 50 patients on the ketogenic diet," he said. "The diet works on 50 to 70 percent of my patients. Any very good medication, at the most, will have a 30 percent effectiveness. This diet surpasses that."

Lopez, who is on the diet, said his triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood the body uses for energy, has improved and he haslost weight.

"The diet requires preparation, it requires committeemen, dedication and creativity," he said. "I encourage the entire family to adopt the diet that way everybody can eat the same food at the dinner table. Everyone benefits from the diet."

He has a patient who is a football player who experiences seizures.

"He is 6-4 and weights about 240 pounds," Lopez said. "His caloric intake is about 5,000 calories so his mom prepares a half dozen eggs and half a package of bacon. She cooks the eggs in the fat of the bacon juice so he can get enough fat into his diet."

Alexander's intake is about 1,620 calories.

"We haven't seen a complete elimination of seizures but they've gone from one to two a day to maybe two a week so there has been a drastic drop in the frequency, the duration and the intensity of the seizures," Alexander's mother said. "Once upon a time when he would have a seizure, he would sleep for three hours. Now when he has a seizure, nine times out of 10 he doesn't fall sleep at all. He's a little droggy but he doesn't sleep so his recovery rate is a lot better."

Cisneros and her daughter have also seen the benefits.

"For my daughter, her endurance is so much better," she said. "When she would compete, she was so exhausted. Now she feels like she can swim longer. She told me that that she is studying less but retaining more. Her energy level and her endurance are both up. Also her muscle tone has gotten more defined.

"For me, my energy levels were dropping and my menstrual cycle was off because I was very hormonal," she said. "I had to take a 2 o'clock nap almost every day. All of that changed. I no longer have to take a nap, my energy levels are high now, everything is different."

Missoula man battles unhealthy diet with new nutrition boot camp … – The Missoulian

Posted: February 12, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Mark Richardson of Missoula admits he began overeating, and eating unhealthily, after losing his daughter to a car crash.

My relationship with food was unhealthy, he told a crowd at a nutrition boot camp hosted by CostCare Clinic on Tuesday. When my daughter died, perhaps I was filling the hole. Within a year I gained 100 pounds or so.

Richardson, who stands 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and is 54 years old, weighed 377 pounds when he went in to see a doctor for a health check-up.

He got a variety of bad news. He had unhealthy blood pressure, elevated liver enzymes and was diagnosed with diabetes.

I was really mad at myself and really frustrated, he said. I got pretty emotional after reading all that. I have a history of diabetes in my family, but I dont blame my diabetes on my hereditary genes. It was totally self-inflicted.

Richardson expected to be told to take a variety of medications, but the doctor also recommended buying Whole30, a nutritional program guidebook written by Melissa and Dallas Hartwig. Richardson has been on it for 154 days, and hes lost 94 pounds. He said his doctor was so shocked that he used cuss words when he saw how much weight Richardson had shed.

Essentially, the Whole30 program advises people to cut out grains, dairy, added sugars, alcohol and legumes for 30 days, and then eat those foods only in extreme moderation afterwards.

I feel fantastic, as good as I ever felt in my life, Richardson said. I got drafted to play professional soccer when I was younger, and I feel as good as I did then.

Richardson almost broke into tears when he talked about how much his unhealthy eating affected his work.

My general manager and her husband are now doing the Whole30, a lot because of the difference shes seen in my work, he said. I have more energy to give them. I owe them more than I gave before. I used to breathe heavy just going up the stairs.

The Whole30 diet has become hugely popular in the United States in the last year, and many Missoulians are taking part in the program.

Carol Bridges co-owns the Cost Care Clinics in Missoula with Lesley Von Eschen. Bridges, a physician, has seen her share of fad diets like the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet and the so-called Paleo Diet. However, she believes the Whole30 diet is sustainable because theres a lot of science behind it.

Thats why shes offering six-session nutritional boot camps in Missoula to guide people through the process and offer support.

One of the reasons its catching on is because its so effective and sustainable, she said. The program is designed to help people treat obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, insomnia, depression, chronic fatigue and heartburn. Weve got a year under our belt pushing people to do a 30-day challenge, and the results are amazing.

Bridges tells her students that humans evolved to live without diets full of processed foods until about 150 years ago, when processed flour, high fructose corn syrup and antibiotics all began to be consumed by humans. She said added sugars and processed foods are overconsumed, and she recommends to people that they eat more proteins like baked chicken, vegetables like broccoli, and unprocessed foods. She said legumes, although they contain protein, also cause low-grade inflammation.

Bridges is quick to point out that the Whole30 isnt necessarily a weight loss program. In fact, many of the students in her class are overweight. The main point, she said, is to treat chronic diseases like diabetes and stomach issues associated with foods that cause inflammation.

Like many diets that have seen an explosion in popularity over the years, the Whole30 diet has its critics. This newspaper is not a medical journal and this article should not be taken as an endorsement of any particular diet program. However, the customers in Bridges' class seem satisfied.

My wife suggested it along with Dr. Bridges because I was eating unhealthy and I was overweight, said Alan Powell, 54. I knew that I could probably lose some weight. And Ive lost 20 pounds on this program. I feel great. Basically, I have a lot more energy and Im not fatigued.

Bridges said that the food industry has maximized the amount of sugar in processed foods and shifted the blame for unhealthy consequences to fat.

That has caused us to eat rich, nutrient-poor no brake foods, she said. "I decided to do the 30-day challenge myself. All of the things they say can happen did happen like how you feel better, sleep better and have clearer thinking."

For Mark Anderson, who has lost nearly 100 pounds, he believes the diet will add years to his life if he sticks to it like he plans.

"At one point I was just checking days off my life," he said. "It took diabetes, really a life-changing event, to set me on a path for my children, my grandchildren and my employer."

The next CostCare boot camp will be held in April. For more information call 370-7050.

DR. WATTS: Should I feed my pet a raw meat diet? – The Daily Progress

Posted: February 12, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Q: My breeder recommended feeding my new puppy raw meat? Isnt that dangerous?

A: Yes, it can beboth to your pets and your family. Fortunately, this fad seems to be dying out. Several years ago, our practice treated pets sickened by raw diets much more frequently than today. Perhaps contributing to this decline was a policy statement adopted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) nearly five years ago. The statement reads:

The AVMA discourages the feeding to cats and dogs of any animal-source protein that has not first been subjected to a process to eliminate pathogens because of the risk of illness to cats and dogs as well as humans. Cooking or pasteurization through the application of heat until the protein reaches an internal temperature adequate to destroy pathogenic organisms has been the traditional method used to eliminate pathogens in animal-source protein, although the AVMA recognizes that newer technologies and other methods such as irradiation are constantly being developed and implemented.

Animal-source proteins of concern include beef, pork, poultry, fish and other meat from domesticated or wild animals as well as milkand eggs. Several studies reported in peer-reviewed scientific journals have demonstrated that raw or undercooked animal-source protein may be contaminated with a variety of pathogenic organisms, including Salmonella spp, Campylobacter spp, Clostridium spp, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus.

Cats and dogs may develop foodborne illness after being fed animal-source protein contaminated with these organisms if adequate steps are not taken to eliminate pathogens; secondary transmission of these pathogens to humans (eg, pet owners) has also been reported. Cats and dogs can develop subclinical infections with these organisms but still pose a risk to livestock, other nonhuman animals, and humans, especially children, older persons and immunocompromised individuals.

To mitigate public health risks associated with feeding inadequately treated animal-source protein to cats and dogs, the AVMA recommends the following:

Avoid feeding inadequately treated animal-source protein to cats and dogs

Restrict cats and dogs access to carrion and animal carcasses (eg, while hunting)

Provide fresh, clean, nutritionally balanced and complete commercially prepared or home-cooked food to cats and dogs, and dispose of uneaten food at least daily

Practice personal hygiene (eg, handwashing) before and after feeding cats and dogs, providing treats, cleaning pet dishes, and disposing of uneaten food

The recommendation not to feed unpasteurized milk to animals does not preclude the feeding of unpasteurized same-species milk to unweaned juvenile animals.

While some have called the policy statement controversial, it should be noted that more than 90 percent of the AVMA delegates voted in favor of this policy. Thats a pretty unified and decisive voice. The policy was considered by a diverse group of doctors representing a wide cross-section of the veterinary profession.

The AVMA House of Delegates includes veterinarians representing all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. It also includes representatives from the American Animal Hospital Association, National Association of Federal Veterinarians, American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians, American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, Uniformed Services Veterinarians, American Association of Corporate and Public Practice Veterinarians, Society for Theriogenology, Association of Avian Veterinarians, American Association of Avian Pathologists, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Association of Feline Practitioners, American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners, Association of Swine Veterinarians, American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, and veterinary students. Thats a diverse body of experts to come to 90 percent agreement on anything! Talk about settled science.

This group adds their well-educated voice to that of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They had already issued the following warning to pet owners: FDA does not believe raw meat foods for animals are consistent with the goal of protecting the public from significant health risks, particularly when such products are brought into the home and/or used to feed domestic pets.

Please fully consider the dangers to both the four-legged and two-legged members of your family when contemplating the use of a raw diet for your pets. Veterinarians take an oath to protect the health of both animals and people. Your family veterinarian is your best resource for guidance on the ideal food for your pets. Make an appointment today to discuss the care and feeding of your new puppy. His healthand maybe yoursdepends on it!

Med Diet Linked to Relief from Depression – Olive Oil Times

Posted: February 12, 2017 at 6:42 pm

Just as the rich nutrition in the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) enhances physical health, so it boosts mental health. A small but striking Australian study links it to alleviating depression.

The research published in BMC Medicine was the first randomized controlled trial to investigate whether or not an improvement in diet can be an effective treatment for major depressive episodes. See more: Olive Oil Health Benefits Scientists found that counseling about healthy food choices, as well as the consumption of MedDiet foods relieved considerably more symptoms of depression than the intervention of belonging to a social support group.

Why was the diet so beneficial? Two big factors that contribute to the depression-fighting properties involve two of its more famous nutrients: omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, naturopathic physician Vickie Modica of Seattle, Washington told Olive Oil Times.

Both of these nutrients have been the subject of recent research into the mind-body link between diet and depression. Omega-3 fatty acids, known to have an anti-inflammatory effect and thought to have a healthful impact on the nervous system, improve the symptoms of depression in multiple studies. Other research shows that diets high in fiber increase the diversity of good gut microbiota, which is believed to have a positive influence on mood, including depression, Modica said.

In the current study, 67 patients suffering from a major depressive episode were randomly assigned to attend either seven sessions with a clinical dietician who extolled the value of the MedDiet or seven sessions of social support. All the participants had unhealthy diets at the beginning of the intervention.

Individuals in the dietary counseling group were asked to improve their eating habits by consuming fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and olive oil, which are foods that comprise the MedDiet. They were required to write what they ate in food diaries, and the recorded data revealed the quality of their food intake increased significantly.

Participants in the social support group were led in the discussion of neutral topics of interest. On occasion, they played board games or cards, activities chosen to keep them engaged and positive.

At the end of 12 weeks, the contrast between the two groups was remarkable. Nearly one-third of the counseling group experienced remission from their depression, compared to only 8 percent of the social support group. Moreover, the improvements werent dependent upon exercise or weight loss.

This study should be thought of as preliminary research and hopefully a catalyst for many more studies proving a mind-body connection, Modica noted. That said, I think its import is multifaceted, having a bearing on the following issues:

Modica explained that the concept of a nutritious diet promoting mental health is an integral part of the naturopathic philosophy.

If I can speak for my profession, we consider it a matter of course that diet affects mood. For me, this study confirms the clinical and empirical experiences I have seen through my schooling and career: a whole foods diet low or absent in processed food has a positive impact on depression symptoms, she said.

Beyonc’s Lemonade Diet: The Dark Side of the Master Cleanse – E! Online

Posted: February 11, 2017 at 11:46 am

Buda Mendes/Getty Images

Beyonc is queen for a reason.

No matter what she's doingeven if it's the most mundane, basic thingshe can do little wrong. Bey can wear mismatched lingerie, workout in the rain and power through intense diets. She does it all with such ease that it makes mere mortals feel like we can do it, too.

It doesn't mean we should, though.

Take, for instance, the Master Cleanse Diet (a.k.a. the Lemonade Dietcoincidence, much?) that Bey underwent in 2006 to shed weight for her role in Dreamgirls. It's been talked about ad nauseum, with nutritionists criticizing its health benefits.

"I have a huge problem with any cleanse that doesn't allow you to have food. People want to eat food," celebrity fitness expert Latreal Mitchell told me. "I do get where they're coming fromlemon is an antioxidant and maple syrup is a natural sweetener, but at the end of the day, all you're giving yourself is lemon and sugar. It's not going to sustain you."

Still, I had to try it. If not for the sake of Beyonc Week, then to fully understand what exactly the singer went through.

The recipe includes: 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice (not the pre-squeezed stuff, which contains preservatives), 2 tablespoons of grade B maple syrup, 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper and 10 ounces of pure waterfor one single serving.

If you're like me, you have no time to make a diet cocktail eight times a day. Also, talk about an awkward lunch-room conversation: "What are you eating today? Umm, syrup. So, I prepped a few days' worth at one time. Note: Not only will have you have jug of diet lemonade at the ready, but you'll have sore, stiff hands, too. I guess the juice is worth the squeeze. But those lucky enough should use a juicer to avoid arthritis.

Day 1: I was weirdlyexcited to get started because, well, I was seven days away from being as Dreamgirls-slim as I was ever going to get. I walked into work with "Crazy in Love" confidence. Instead of wearing a white tank and denim short-shorts, I was strutting into a newsroom in a shift dress and water bottles of Master Cleanse. Slay!

The first day was relatively easy. I normally eat a light breakfast anyway so I wasn't that hungry. Honestly, I probably drank half the servings I should havethe lemon and maple concoction kept me relatively full.

Day 2: Now if you have a voracious appetite, you'll be starving by now. When I woke, I was hungry, but already, I noticed the size difference in my tummyit was slightly flatter. That is, until I drank two 8-ounce glasses of juice in five minutes. Then, it was bloat central. The thing about juicing that no one ever tells you is that you'll constantly need to go to the bathroom, which is especially annoying for an equally busy and lazy girl like me.

Day 3: By the third day, I developed a superpower...or maybe it was my kryptonite: My sense of smell was extremely heightened. I'd be content one minute and then the next, the fine aroma of toasted bread wafting from the office kitchen had me dazed then ravenous. I could smell food from the corner office situated on the entire opposite side or the floor. While my co-workers couldn't smell a thing, I had to stop breathing through my nose. Even just a small whiff of tuna, tomato soup or other lunchtime marvels had me desperately wanting food, only to be met with unsatisfying diet juice. I began resenting everything and everyone: myself, lemons, even Beyonc for giving me this crazy idea.

Day 4: Let's just say no one dared to talk to me.

Day 5: Not going to lie, I felt a little fragile. I felt like I was exerting more energy just to keep my body up. I went to sleep earlier and woke up much later than usual. I wouldn't recommend anyone exercising while on this cleanse. I kept a protein bar in my bag just in case. I never needed it; but, it was reassuring to have sustenance nearby just in case.

Day 6: Let's go through the list so far: Hunger? Check. Irritable? Check. Full bladder? Check. Bloat? Check. Low energy? Check. Stiff hands? Check. Oh, did I mention my teeth started feeling extra sensitive? Maybe it was the acidity of the lemons, but I felt like they, too, were taking a beating.

Day 7: Victory! I'm going to be honestI didn't wait until the day was over to eat. I did start slow, however, with the recommended soups and light fare, as to not overwhelm my digestive system. I noticed a small change in appearanceI even felt a little lighter. But friends and family who hadn't seen me for the week instantly noticed a difference. Apparently, my cheeks were smaller, my collarbones were more distinct and, indeed, my waist looked slimmer. It worked! I never doubted you, Bey.

In total, I must've lost eight or nine pounds in a weekI'm 113 (I mean 115), for reference. However, once I got back into the swing of my regular diet (salads for lunch, whatever I want for dinner), I basicallygained the weight back in a few weeks' time.

"You might lose weight temporarily, but you're going to gain it right back once you start to eat again," warned Latrealand she was right.

If you're looking for long-term results, you're better off hitting the gym. I will say if you're looking for fast weight loss, to prep for a wedding, or in Beyonc's case, a movie, Master Cleanse might work for you. Just beware: Some gain more weight than when they started off.

"The most common thing that happens is you wind up binge-eating because you just want to eat so bad," the expert added.

And there you have it.

PS: I love eating too much, so you won't find medoing that again.

Five Reasons Why Diets Don’t Work | The Huffington Post – Huffington Post UK

Posted: February 11, 2017 at 11:46 am

You can't turn on the TV, drive down the road or go to a party without being confronted with Britain's hottest obsession especially at this time of the year: weight. Diets are a billion-pound industry; companies spend millions and millions luring you to try the latest diet (low carb, high protein, low fat, no fat, you name it) with promises that this will (finally!) be the solution--your shortcut to a thinner body. Advertising efforts also deeply affect our children, who develop distorted body images and are often on diets as early as nine or 10 years of age.

Our culture touts diet pills, celebrity workouts, convenience foods and trendy diets to help us achieve our desired weight, but these quick-fix solutions have backfired. Britain's populace has reached its highest weight in history. Almost half the population are overweight; one-third are obese. Diets steer us away from our common sense and dig deeply into our pocketbooks while eliciting few, if any, lasting results. Why?

Given half a chance, your body will balance out by itself, but this is only possible by getting out of the diet mentality and listening to what you truly need. Imagine taking all of the outward energy you expend on diets, fads and gimmicks and turning it inward, so that you can listen to your heart and inner wisdom.

There is no such thing as a quick fix; you already have everything you need within you. With careful thought and loving reflection, you can feed yourself in a nourishing way. Working with your body rather than against it will bring you increased energy, stabilized weight and sustainable health.

Unlike fat, choices for the right diet keep shrinking – Jackson Sun

Posted: February 11, 2017 at 11:46 am

The Jackson Sun 10:53 a.m. CT Feb. 9, 2017

Tom Purcell(Photo: Cagle Cartoons Syndicate)

I know Democrats and progressives are going nuts over President Trump's first few weeks in office I know the Middle East is a mess and that we have no small number of incredible challenges at home but I have my own worries.

Like millions of other Americans, I'm on my annual February diet.

You see, it's not easy to be trim and fit in America. Our culture is saturated with an abundance of high-calorie, processed foods that turn into instant fat.

We work long and hard in sedentary office jobs, then eat our stress away, two or three fast food treats at a time.

We've become so fat, to quote Rodney Dangerfield, that our bathtubs have stretch marks.

We know our increasing tubbiness isn't healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity-associated diseases such as diabetes have soared in recent years. Gallbladder diseases, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and heart disease are all caused by carrying too much weight.

And so we are on a continuous mission to lose weight. Our challenge is that the fad diets that promise to get us there go in and out of fashion faster than the white patent leather shoes and belts my father used to wear to church.

According to the website The Daily Meal (thedailymeal.com), the Mediterranean Diet it features natural, plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts is in.

So, too, is the Paleo Diet, which apparently is similar to the Mediterranean Diet, except legumes are forbidden.

Which is a shame, too, because I just learned that legumes include alfalfa, clover, peas, beans, lentils, lupin beans, mesquite, carob, soybeans, peanuts and tamarind which go well with the bourbon I am driven to drink as I try to figure out which diet to go on.

Volumetrics is another in diet. It encourages the consumption of low-energy-density foods, which make you feel full with fewer calories than high-energy-density foods. It also sounds like too much math is involved.

The Gluten Diet is on the outs, though, according to The Daily Meal. Apparently, it puts people at risk for different deficiencies such as B vitamin deficiencies, calcium, fiber, vitamin D and iron.

The Daily Meal no longer favors the Atkins Diet, either, which makes me sore.

Dr. Atkins said we could eat delicious steaks, pork, chicken and fish. He said we could eat as much eggs and cheese and other tasty no-sugar treats as we could stuff into our bellies. His diet was all the rage for years.

But now The Daily Meal says his diet is a no go? That it is not heart-healthy and that most users are not compliant over the long term?

Not so fast! Several prominent studies have concluded that old Doc Atkins was onto something. Low-carbohydrate diets may actually take off more weight than low-fat diets and may be surprisingly better for cholesterol, too.

One of my greatest dieting disappointments of the last 20 years, though, was the failure of the exercise pill, which had shown promise at Duke University around 2002.

Researchers had located the chemical pathways that muscle cells use to build strength and endurance. With that knowledge in hand, there was hope that a pill could be created that would pump up muscle cells WITHOUT the need for actual exercise.

Dieting Americans could have sat on the couch, chomping potato chips and dip, while their biceps got as round as cantaloupes and their abs got as hard as stone but this uniquely American dieting innovation wasn't to be.

I think I'll try a new, restrictive diet this February: the Democrats in Congress Diet.

I'll deny myself everything.

EPIT Mechanism of Action Research

Full data will be shared following embargo lift; at the time the studies are presented. All abstracts are available online at http://annualmeeting.aaaai.org/, and will also be published in a supplement to the February Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI) at http://www.jacionline.org/.

About the PEPITES Study The Peanut EPIT Efficacy and Safety Study (PEPITES) is a global, pivotal, double-blinded, placebo-controlled Phase III trial designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Viaskin Peanut 250 mcg in children ages four to 11 years. During PEPITES, patients` response will be assessed using a double-blind, placebo controlled food challenge (DBPCFC). Patients are randomized 2:1 to receive either Viaskin Peanut 250 mcg or placebo for 12 months. The primary endpoint is based on a responder analysis after 12 months of treatment with Viaskin Peanut 250 g. For patients with a baseline peanut protein eliciting dose (ED) equal to or less than 10 mg, a responder is defined as a patient with a peanut protein ED equal to or greater than 300 mg of peanut protein after 12 months of treatment. For subjects with a baseline ED greater than 10 mg, a responder is defined as a patient with a peanut protein ED equal to or greater than 1,000 mg of peanut protein after 12 months of treatment. As a secondary efficacy endpoint, Cumulative Reactive Dose (CRD), will also be used in PEPITES to establish the total quantity of peanut protein that triggers patient reactions at month 12 of active treatment versus placebo. Serological markers will also be measured at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months in order to characterize the immunological changes in patients. Following the completion of PEPITES, all patients are eligible to rollover into PEOPLE, a long-term, open-label extension study of Viaskin Peanut 250 g. In the PEOPLE study, patients who were randomized to active treatment during PEPITES will receive ViaskinPeanut 250 mcg for two additional years; patients who were previously receiving placebo during PEPITES will be treated with Viaskin Peanut 250 mcg for three years. Patients enrolling in the PEOPLE study will remain blinded to their respective treatment group in PEPITES until the PEPITES study results become publicly available.

About the REALISE Study REALISE is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III study designed to assess the use of Viaskin Peanut 250 mcg in routine medical practice and generate safety data after six months of blinded treatment in patients four to 11 years of age. At the six-month time point, patients in both the placebo and active arms will be able to opt into an open-label portion of the study, which will continue monitoring patients for a total of 36 months of active treatment. Exploratory criteria will also include scores from subjects` Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire (FAQLQ) and the Food Allergy Independent Measure (FAIM), as well as the evolution of peanut-specific serological markers over time. The study is expected to be conducted in approximately 30 to 40 centers in North America. No oral food challenges are required in REALISE. Patients in the study will be selected based on a well-documented medical history of IgE-mediated reactions to peanut, including children with a history of severe anaphylaxis, as well as analyses of peanut-specific immunological markers. During the first six months of trial, patients will be randomized 3:1 active versus placebo. Key assessments of safety parameters will include treatment-emergent adverse events observed in both the placebo and active treatment groups after the initial 6 months, which will continue to be monitored during the open-label portion of the study. DBV intends to enroll approximately 335 subjects in REALISE.

About the OLFUS-VIPES Study OLFUS-VIPES (Open-Label Follow-Up Study-Viaskin Peanut`s Efficacy and Safety), or OLFUS, enrolled 171 subjects who had previously received either placebo or one of three 12-month dose regimens administered during VIPES. During the first year of OLFUS, patients were to receive a daily application of Viaskin Peanut 50 g or Viaskin Peanut 100 g or Viaskin Peanut 250 g for 12 months. According to a study protocol change implemented in March 2014, all patients were switched to receive Viaskin Peanut 250 mcg during OLFUS. All patients in OLFUS maintained a peanut-free diet during the study. Baseline response levels in OLFUS were based on the results of the last double-blind, placebo controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) in VIPES, and adjusted by the number of patients enrolling in OLFUS. Responders in the OLFUS trial were defined as subjects with a peanut protein eliciting dose equal to or greater than 1,000 mg peanut protein or with a greater than 10-fold increase of the eliciting dose compared to their baseline eliciting dose observed in the VIPES study. Patients enrolled in OLFUS who received placebo in VIPES were analyzed separately from subjects who initially received Viaskin Peanut. At month 24 in OLFUS, patients who were unresponsive to a cumulative dose above 1,440 mg were eligible to discontinue study drug for two months while maintaining a peanut-free diet. Patients who opted to enter into this additional period performed a DBPCFC at month-26 to assess durability of response.

The Top 9 Natural Home Remedies For Yellow Teeth That Won’t Destroy Your Enamel – Collective Evolution

Posted: February 11, 2017 at 11:45 am

We're creating a positive news network. We need your help.

Traditional whitening practices have proven to be quite harmful to the longevity of our teeth.

Dental specialist Linda Greenwall has thoroughlyinvestigatedthe harmful use of teeth whitening treatments, especially ones thatincludechlorine dioxide, and arguesthese chlorine dioxide treatments are advertised as safe for teeth. It is certainly not thecase.

Itremainsdifficult for people to find an effective and safe alternative to traditional teeth whiteningpractices practices that cause serious and irreversible damage to the enamel of our teeth, which is what protects them to begin with. Greenwall explains that chlorine dioxidewhitening treatments can cause serious damage, including: tooth etching, loss of tooth lustre, discolouration, stain absorption(due to loss of protective enamel), teeth feeling rough, and increased sensitivity (sometimes permanent).

Other risks include:

If you are serious about getting whiter teeth safely, you need to first determine what is causing theirdiscolouration to begin with. Coffee, tea, red wine, and cigarettes are all major culprits here, so start by cutting down or completely eliminatingthese four things.

These are the risks you face when choosing to go the conventional route. Fortunately, safer and more holistic alternatives are available.

This is a traditional Aryurvedic practice used to help detoxify and cleanse the body. Along with helping to whiten teeth, it alsoreduces tooth decay and gingivitis. Sesame oil is the traditional choice, but to see the best results, use coconut oil, which containsmonolaurin, a very effective antimicrobial against the main bug implicated with tooth decay, strep mutans.

Be sure to usea high quality oil. We often use thiscoconut oildue to its single origin quality. Start by taking a tablespoon of oiland swishing it in your mouth for 20 minutes.Move it through your teeth and the front and back of your mouth. Do not swallow! The longer its been in your mouth the more contaminated it will become, as it is literally pulling bacteria, fungi, and viruses into your mouth from your whole body. When you are done, spit it out (and brush your teeth if youd like).

Baking soda has a really lowRelative Dentin Abrasivity, or RDA, score. The scale goes from 0 (no abrasivity) to 269 (high abrasivity), with baking soda ranking in at just 7.

How to use:

Use a high quality baking soda such as Duda Energy.

1. Take a pinch of baking soda and put it into a small glass or bowl. 2. Add a small amount of purified water (ideally not tap water) to the bowl and mix it into the baking soda. The solution should be slightly runny, as you dont want too many of the granules present. Dip your toothbrush in to get some of the solution on the brush. 3. Brush your teeth, starting with your molars and then moving to the facings and backs of your teeth. 4. Optional: Once done, you can add some more water to the glass or bowl and swish it around your mouth. This will help keep your mouth alkaline. 5. Rinse out your mouth with purified water as you normally would after brushing.

Other people place baking soda directly on their toothbrush and begin with the front teeth. When the solution is mixed with saliva, it becomes liquid.

White kaolin clay has a low abrasivity score and is effective as both a polish and stain remover. It is alsohigh in calcium, silica, zinc, and magnesium, and safe for people withtooth sensitivity.

How to use:

Apply it directly onto your toothbrush, starting with your front teeth and then, as it mixes with your saliva, moving on tothe rest of the mouth.

You can also combine this with baking soda.

Activated charcoal is not absorbed by the body but is itself highly absorbent, allowing it to easilyremove toxins without harming the body. It isfantastic for people who have had a bout of food poising or have accidentally ingestedsomething toxic. If you take this within 30 minutes of ingestion you should see results, but do not take it with other vitamins or supplements, as it willabsorb those as well.

Be aware that while it can remove stains from teeth, it does stain clothes, tiles, counters, etc. It can also cause constipation and block mineral absorption, and should not be mixed with dairy. These are warnings in the case that you do ingest it.

How to use:

Wet your toothbrush and dip it into the charcoal. Put the charcoal covered toothbrush in the mouth (quickly to protect your sink) and brush in small, gentle circles for two minutes. Spit carefully and rinse really well. You can alsomix the charcoal with water and swish with it for two minutes.

You can also combine this withoil pulling.

Its important to dilute peroxide to between 1% and 1.5% concentration at the very most. Anything higher will damage your teeth, even a mere3%.

Ourbody produces hydrogen peroxide primarily in the lungs, gut, and thyroid gland, andthe presence of hydrogen peroxide calls the immune system to an injury. This mayexplain how diluted hydrogen peroxide aids someone who is fighting gum disease.

How touse:

Again, use a very low concentration and swish around the teeth for three to fiveminutes.

Just like activated charcoal, you need to be careful about where your turmeric lands! It will stain everything, including your toothbrush, so you may even need to have a designated turmeric brush. But we promise it wont stain your teeth!

Turmeric has extensivemedicinal properties, including as a digestiveaid and an anti-inflammatory. It has even been said to help prevent certain types of cancers.

How touse:

Wet your toothbrush and then dip it in 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder. Brush teeth as normal, but instead of rinsing when youre done, allow the turmeric to sit on your teeth forthree to fiveminutes. Follow this with a regular brushing to get rid of any excess yellow buildup.

You can also try this combo: 2 parts turmeric powder to 1 part coconut oil and 1 part baking soda. Mix together to form a paste, and keep in a cool place (coconut oil is liquid at around 74-76 degrees).

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, which helps to make your teeth whiter. Use them to whiten teeth by crushing a few berries and then applying them to your teeth. Let it sit for about three to fiveminutes and then rinse out your mouth well.

Lemon has a solid bleaching power. Many use it to lighten their hair, but it can be used on your teeth as well.Squeeze lemon juice into a small bowl and add some sea salt to it. Grind it down to produce a soft paste. Apply that to your teeth and let sit for three to fiveminutes. Rinse well. Its important to rinse this thoroughly, as you dont want to let it sit over long periods of time and erode yourenamel.

This one is controversial and I personally wouldnt say this should be your go-to option. Some health professionals say it works, while others say it doesnt. In the end, the gritty surface, which is rich in magnesium and potassium, may polish teeth and help remove some stains on the enamel, but results vary widely. For this method, simply rub your teeth with the inside of a ripe banana peel for two to fiveminutes and rinse when finished. Do this twicedaily.

There are a number of whitening options one can explore via dentists, whitening professionals, or the drugstore. These include bleaching trays, professional bleaching treatments, and products like Whitestrips. There is no doubt that these products do work, but there are reported disadvantages to these options that dont exist withthe above natural methods.

Oftenthe treatments above utilize harsh ingredients that can have powerful effects on gums and teeth, creating prolongedsensitivity even afteroneuse. For example, studies suggest that between one-thirdand one-halfof all people who use Whitestrips will notice some degree of gum tissue irritation. [1] If youve tried these products in the past, you may have seen great results and had no irritation, but if you did experience irritation, try the options abovefor a more natural and sustainable approach.

When using natural healing methods, its essential to rememberthat change does not happen overnight. If you want to get your teeth looking whiter naturally, you need to first understand that this will take time. Give yourself at least a month ofcombining the practices listed above withlimiting discolouration factors (coffee, tea, red wine, smoking) and judge from there if this is working for you.

We live in an age that is almost ruled by coffee, which happens to be one of the biggest contributors to stained and yellow teeth. While step number one for whiter teeth would be to limit coffee intake, that may not be a desired option for some of us, sothe above list of natural teeth whitening options should at least help mitigate the damage of coffee consumption.

Dental hygiene is important. It can be a contributing factor to many diseases in other areas of the body if not properly taken care of. One of the biggest ways we can damage our teeth is through acidic foods and drinks. In fact, a lot of times, yellow teeth are the result of an acidic diet, which wears at teeth enamelif teethare not properly taken care of.
