Weight loss story: " I gave up rice and roti completely to lose 12 kilos" | The Times of India – Times of India

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Since I had made up my mind about getting rid of the stubborn fat, I went for Intermittent Fasting. Unlike other people, weight loss was for me was slower. I only lost 5-6 kilos in 2 months. Then, I joined a community 'Svasthya' which helps people lose weight naturally.

I majorly adopted a low-carb diet and it was only then I could lose weight faster. I lost 5-6 kilos in a single month. I avoided outside food, rice, rotis and mostly stuck to eggs, veggies and non-veg fare. But they were all yummy and made out of healthy fats like ghee!

My breakfast: Breakfast would ideally be omelette (2 eggs), sauteed vegetables/sprouts salad/vegetable curry.

My lunch: Chicken/fish/eggs and any vegetable curry

Snacks: Almonds, walnuts, peanuts tossed in ghee, curd with pomegranate and flax, chia and sunflower seeds.

My dinner: I skipped dinner

Pre-workout meal: I used to work out an hour after having my breakfast.

Post-workout meal: None

I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): I rarely cheated while following the diet but I had refeed weekends at least once in a month wherein I used to eat what all I wanted, did not keep a calorie count. This helped me to come back to my diet with a sane mind.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Shallow-fried chicken in ghee with sauteed vegetables, salad (having at least 5 kinds of vegetables) with mayo+curd dressing, low-carb strawberry smoothies and pomegranate salad.

4 Best Walking Tips for Weight Loss, According to Science | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Today is National Walking Day, which means it's of the utmost importance that you dedicate some time to getting outside and strutting your stuff down the sidewalk.

In all honesty, walking is one of the best forms of exercise you can do on a regular basis. The American Heart Association recommends that you engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity on a weekly basis to keep your heart healthy. What better way to get your sweat on than to hit the trails and go for a brisk walk?

You don't have to be a seasoned runner or hiker to reap the heart-healthy benefits of aerobic exerciseyou can intensify your walk with the help of hand-held weights and intervals. In fact, walking for one hour each day could be enough to help you reach sustainable weight loss, depending on your pace and the terrain you're trekking on. (Related: 15 Underrated Weight Loss Tips That Actually Work).

Below, we've curated a list of four walking tips that will help you maximize your weight loss.

A 2016 study published in Diabetologia, revealed that walking for 10 minutes after each meal helped to lower blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes more so than walking for 30 minutes consecutively at any other time during the day. As Melissa Rifkin, MS, RDN, CDN points out, managing blood glucose (sugar) levels can make weight loss a lot easier, regardless of whether you have diabetes or not. Walking after you eat can help increase calorie burn and specifically encourage your body to use fat as an energy source.

Getting out in the sun during the workday can provide a host of health benefits, namely increased vitamin D absorption, which can improve immune function and even support bone health. A 2020 study published inPhysiological Reports may give you additional incentive to get out during peak sun hours, as it suggests that exercising in the afternoon may increase fat burn.

More specifically, the study revealed that obese men who exercised in the afternoon not only scorched more body fat, but also improved blood glucose (sugar) levels, and experienced less insulin resistance over the course of 12 weeks, compared to those who worked out in the morning. Consider getting out for a brisk walk in the afternoon to achieve the greatest calorie burn.

As Dr. Amy Lee, Head of Nutrition for Nucific explained to us before, walking 10,000 steps (or the equivalent of five miles) each day will help you maintain weight, but if you want to shed pounds you'll want to tack on an additional 5,000 steps. In addition, you'll want to ramp up the intensity a bit too. Consider walking at an incline on the treadmill, or going up and down hills in a metro park near you.

"If you always walk the same loop in the park or your neighborhood, try to find a hill or locations with more gradient. That way, you are increasing your cardio," said Lee.

Not only does working out with a friend help the time go by when you're working out and keep you accountable, but it may also help you work harder. The findings from a 2017 study posted in Nature Communicationssuggest that friends can majorly influence each other's exercise routine. Another study from Michigan State University found that doing aerobic exercise (such as walking or running) with a partner motivated participants to work harder and longer, in comparison to those who worked out alone.

Pete Davidson and Jimmy Fallon Decided to Chat About Alec Baldwins Weight Loss – Vanity Fair

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

What does boys will be boys mean? It never made much sense. You cant define a word with the word, one might yell and yell, but impotently. Its not like weuse the saying for anything else. Hammers will be hammers. Mice are mice. Nightmares were nightmares. But one might as well be yelling into the abyss for all the good itll do you. Boys will be boys, they keep on saying.

So, well, I came across a little news item, and frankly? It put me at ease. Here were some boys, three to be exact, and Im pretty sure they were being like boys. Pete Davidson went on Jimmy Fallon this week and they started their little chat off with a story about Alec Baldwin losing weight. Yes, two boys gossiping about the weight of another boy on national television. They cant help it! Theyre boys, and theyll be boys.

Here's a brief summary: Davidson said that Baldwin, who played Donald Trump during the dog days of the 2010s,was impressed by Davidsons physique when he took his shirt off and asked basically, How do you do it? Davidson didnt want to say something like be a young boy, not an older boy, and have a functioning metabolism so he advised Baldwin do 100 push-ups a day instead. Now, thats way too many push-ups for one day, maybe, but boys have been boys before, and theyre going to be boys now! Baldwin said, and Im paraphrasing here, Sounds good, roger that, and started doing those push-ups. He lost like 100 pounds Davidson said to Fallon.

Now, Baldwin was on a health kick already due to blood sugar at pre-diabetic levels, per one interview with his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, who also happened to have a wellness book out. I quietly watched what he ate, only mentally jotting down my secret wish list of what Id tell him if he asked, she told People last year.Regardless, Davidsons just exaggerating; boys just do that type of thing. They will, as ever, be boys, as Pete will be Pete and Jimmy, Jimmy.

How Weight Loss Can Lead to Disturbing Binge Eating Habits Down the Line – InsideHook

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

In a recent post on Medium, writer Michael Easter unearthed a study from 1944, when the University of Minnesota simulated a POW camp for 36 male volunteers.

It was part of a wartime effort to gather information on starvation a mind-bending 20 million people died of malnutrition during WWII, soldiers and civilians alike and over nine months, researchers drastically curtailed the amount of food each subject was allowed to take in. They started them with 3,200 calories a day, but eventually brought them down to 1,570, and kept them at that number for 24 straight weeks.

The volunteers bodies became emaciated. During this diet, meanwhile, they were still expected to do two hours of physical labor a day, and walk at least three miles. All told, its the sort of extreme experiment that would only happen during an era like WWII. But despite being almost 80 years old, its findings are hyper-relevant to today, especially in the United States, where dieting is a national pastime: two-thirds of the country is overweight or obese, and 45 million Americans attempt a diet each year, fueling a $33 billion weight loss business.

The study exhibits why weight loss is such a pesky pursuit in the modern age. When we shed pounds by cutting calories, our resting metabolisms simply regroup the body of a 160-pound man starts to burn calories at the rate of a 60-pound child. This was once an evolutionary advantage, meant to protect hunter-gatherer types from several days spent chasing gazelles or searching for berries. But these days, it just leads to weight loss plateaus. Worse yet, in order to burn fewer calories, the body stops sending regenerative cells to organs and muscles.

During the study, many of the men also became obsessed with food. Theyd read cookbook recipes well into the night, and they dealt with an ever-present hangriness. They found focusing on anything other than food impossible. Once they left the U of M and were allowed to eat again, they consumed at a prodigious, Michael Phelps-like level, averaging over 11,000 calories a day. (Thats about 60 donuts. Yeah.)

This, of course, led to significant weight gain. In the end, many of them gained more weight than they had lost during the experiment. This corroborates recent research, which suggests that for every two pounds someone loses, their brain is intent on eating an extra 100 calories a day. An over-the-top dieting process essentially catalyzes our cravings while fiddling with our concept of fullness. And in our era, its easy to meet those massive cravings with processed foods high in sugar, salt and fat.

Research on weight loss best practices is ongoing and on the other side of the coin, recent science has suggested that simply prioritizing exercise isnt an ideal way forward for burning calories. But the takeaway here is to be sparing and cautious with fad diets, especially those that simulate a famine. While they may indeed help you lose weight, its possible that the aftermath wild mood swings and cheat meals could cause more damage in the long run. Its better, as always, to find a consistent balance and champion non-processed, whole-food, plant-based ingredients on a day-to-day basis.

Is Pineapple Good for Weight Loss? Benefits of Low-Calorie Fruit. – menshealth.com

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Pineapple is a delicious yellow fruit that tastes great in smoothies and breakfast bowlsand it happens to be super nutritious.

Pineapple is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, can surely aid in promoting weight loss, and works nicely in a variety of diet-friendly meals and snacks.

Pineapple is a tropical fruit that contains vitamin C, B vitamins, fiber, plus manganese. And pineapple also contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme which helps to digest protein, says Ilyse Schapiro R.D.

Men's Health

Bromelain functions as a protease, an enzyme which breaks down protein molecules into their building blocks, such as amino acids and small peptides. Once proteins are broken down, they are more easily absorbed across the small intestine.

Bromelain is also anti-inflammatory, which can help ease aches and pains. This is especially beneficial for those with arthritis, she explains. Plus, the manganese is great for bone health and bone density, she adds, which can lower risk of osteoporosis later in lifeyes, men can get it too!

One cup of pineapple has 78.9 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C, which is close to the required 90 mg DV for men. And there are also 2.3 grams of fiber per cup, along with 2.6 mg of manganese.

Of course, as with any fruit, dont go overboard. Stick with a proper serving size (one cup is good) and treat pineapple as a nutritious, naturally sweetened food to enjoy in your diet.

How to Enjoy It

Pair pineapple with a cup of plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese or blend it with greens, protein powder and nut butter to make a green protein smoothie. You can also use pineapple in a salad, grain bowl, stir-fry, or in a dip, like guacamole or salsa.

For a salsa, combine pineapple, tomatoes, cilantro, red onion, and jalapeos in a bowl. Add lime juice and toss. You can season with salt, pepper, and hot pepper saucewhatever you enjoy. Allow flavors to blend at room temperature for 30 minutes, or chill until serving time, Schapiro says.

And of course you can grill it during summertime to go with your burgers and kebabs. For example, grill pineapple and enjoy it by itself or pair with chicken, steak, salmon or pork.

Grilling basic pineapple is simple. You can spray or wipe oil in a grill pan, and cook the pineapple for 2 to 3 minutes on medium heat, then rotate 45 degrees, to get the grill marks, she says. You can also add honey or cinnamon and brown sugar or coconut and lime to flavor the grilled pineapple."

Pineapple is also an excellent healthy dessert option or sweet treat when you have a sugar craving. You can dip it in melted chocolate or eat it frozen for an icy treat, and you can also puree it and make it into a popsicle, Schapiro says. Or make a refreshing sorbet thatll hit the spot on a warm day.

Metabolic aspects of weight-loss surgery scrutinized – The Ledger

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Robin Williams Adams| Your Health correspondent

How weight-loss surgery helps control chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension is a complex subject.

Having a vastly smaller stomach obviously makes overeating undesirable and uncomfortable. The surgery also affects metabolism:how the body turns food into energy.

Researchers spent a great deal of time debating what was metabolic surgery and what was bariatric surgery, sometimes to the frustration of doctors who see them as intertwined.

Actually, we use them interchangeably, said Dr. Sanjiv Gray, bariatric surgeon with Lakeland Regional Healths Institute for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Medicine.

Its not just about weight loss for us. Its about improving the patients life.

The two most common bariatric surgery procedures sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass affect the bodys metabolism by adjusting the circulating levels of different hormones.

The surgery affects the metabolic rate, which is ultimately how you lose the weight, said Dr. Shiva Seetahal, bariatric surgeon at AdventHealth Heart of Florida Hospital in Northeast Polk.

After a large portion of the stomach gets removed from the digestive process, peoples appetite is curbed. They feel more satisfied.

Other metabolic changes can be seen immediately after surgery, such as some patients who previously needed insulin not needing it the morning after surgery.

Thats what led us to say, Something else is going on outside of weight loss, said Dr. C.R. Hall, Gessler Clinic bariatric surgeon and director of the bariatric program at Winter Haven Hospital.

Gray shared a study published in October that found both bypass and sleeve resulted in significant decreases in diabetics average level of blood sugar (HbA1C). This study involved predominantly in Hispanic and Black patients.

Part of the puzzle appears to center on the bodys internal battle between hormones leptin and ghrelin.

Leptin triggers the brain to want to consume less food. Ghrelin, known as the hunger hormone, stimulates appetite.

Other hormones and peptides also regulate bodys willingness to store fat. Trials to tease out all these different hormones and their effects are ongoing, Hall said.

These also affect non-surgical treatments for weight loss.

Some older diabetes medicines can lead to weight gain, but newer ones have been found to help people lose weight.

Victoza, Saxenda and Ozempic are among those getting a lot of attention, said Dr. Lilliam Chiques-Colon, a Watson Clinic internal medicine doctor who specializes in obesity treatment.

Shes one of several doctors affiliated with the LRH Institute.

These medicines are synthetic versions of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) that stimulates receptors in the brain, increasing the feeling of being full.

Victoza and Saxenda contain liraglutide, a class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists.

Victoza has Food and Drug Administration approval for use in improving blood sugar levels in adults with type-2 diabetes.Saxenda is approved for long-term weight loss (along with better diet and exercise.)

Ozempic (a semiglutide) is approved for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and to lower risk of major events like heart attacks. The FDA is reviewing whether to approve it for weight loss too.

Chiques-Colon does suggest some of her patients change to newer medications to help them lose weight.

I look like a hero and all I did was change their medicine, she said.

Lost 60 kg in four years: Ria Banerjee Ankola shares weight loss journey without any fancy diets – The Indian Express

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Many people aim to lose weight and try various means to reach their goals. But it is essential to understand that weight loss does not happen overnight. It is a journey that needs dedication, hard work, and immense patience.

Showing how to do it right is clinical nutritionist Ria Banerjee Ankola who recently took to Instagram to share her fitness journey of losing 60 kilos in a span of four years without any fancy diets.

And you would not believe, I did not require anything fancy to do so, said the 42-year-old.

Take a look at her post below:

Heres what she did.

*Avoided too much caffeine (instead had lots of water)*Avoided unhealthy snacking and eating when I was not hungry or starving myself when I am very hungry (always did listen to what my body told me)*Avoided fancy fad diets

I chose the form of workout I enjoyed like light strength training and brisk walks or jogging, Ria, who is married to actor Salil Ankola mentioned.

She also completely avoided sugar (once in a while as a cheat meal, but not every day), and using too much table salt.

So many organic salts are available. Try them as they are equally yummy. I stopped adding extra salt to my food, mentioned Ria.

She also mentioned that weight loss is a slow process and one should not be impatient.

I avoided being impatient and gave my body enough time (there were times I only lost 2 kgs a month but I was ok with it), she added.

She also went on to stress that she did not isolate herself from family gatherings.

I did not isolate myself from social gatherings and family dinners (but chose what to eat from the table) she said.

Whats the final word?

Losing weight is not as difficult as it looks. Just that you need to stay focused and determined, she mentioned.

Amy Tapper: I’ve cracked the weight-loss code – The List

Posted: April 9, 2021 at 1:49 am

Amy Tapper

Amy Tapper thinks she's finally "cracked the code" of her weight-loss ambitions.

The former 'Gogglebox' star has been dieting on and off since childhood, but the 21-year-old TV personality believes she's now found something that works for her.

Amy shared: "I have tried and tested every diet under the sun but my weight has been a battle since I was eight years old.

"Its not because of what Ive been brought up on, but a lot of people probably look at me and think that.

"I remember watching back videos of me when I was six or seven and asking Mum, What did you feed me? She said: You didnt eat. We dont know what happened.'"

The TV star has tried a host of different diets in a bid to lose weight.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I started with Slimming World then did shakes and bars. I have done no carbs and have just lived off chicken and veg."

However, Amy has managed to lose more than three stone during lockdown and she thinks she's finally found the formula that works for her.

She said: "I have been doing quite a lot of dance workouts at home, every day. Theyre 25 minutes long on YouTube.

"It is exercising to a beat and gets you going.

"I did a One Direction one the other day. They get you in good spirits for the rest of the day.

"If not every day, it will be every other day, and I mix and match it with yoga. I add in squats while brushing my teeth, too. I love squats.

Every persons body is different and everyones metabolism is different.

"Over the past ten years I think I have come to a conclusion about what is best for me and what works for me. Before, I would lose two stone easily, then my body would just never budge after the two stone.

"It has been an ongoing battle but I think I have finally cracked the code."
