Posted: September 12, 2012 at 3:13 am
Jessica Simpson officially unveiled her post-baby weight loss on Tuesday when she sat down as Katie Courics first guest on Katie.
"I'm very nervous!" she admitted. "I just had a lot of pressure on me to lose the baby weight. Today was one of my goals: getting here, feeling comfortable. I feel beautiful today!"
The singer, wearing a fitted black dress, said she lost a 40 pounds since giving birth to her daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson in May.
True to her bubbly-ditzy persona, Simpson believed that when her water broke she would lose the baby weight. "All the weight did not come off with the baby!" she laughed.

'Weight-loss procedures lack standardization and proficiency'

Calcutta News.Net Tuesday 11th September, 2012
None of the weight-loss solutions currently available in the country are functioning on any reliable logical science, leading to short term weight loss and several linked complications, experts said at the "National Conference on Tackling Nutritional Challenges Among the diabetic Young".
"Lately, centres selling weight-loss in kilos and companies offering weight loss pills and drinks have cropped up as quick-fix solution. Most of them lack a holistic and customized approach, leading to various related health problems," said Manjari Chandra, senior nutritionist from Nutritionistsrepublic.com after attending the discussion, organised by Anna Adarsh Women's College, Chennai and Panacea Health Education.
The cases discussed were of unsuccessful weight-loss attempts. All three cases basically revolved around the malpractices and unscientific approaches found quite often in presently available methods of weight loss.
The first case discussed was of 27-year-old banker, who joined a weight-loss centre but could not achieve weight-loss even after trying almost everything they offered over a period of two years.
The second case was of 36-year-old lecturer having hypothyroidism; she tried a 'blood group diet' but soon regained all the weight after leaving the programme.
The third case was of 24-year-old girl who wanted to lose weight because of family pressure. She tried stand alone products and rather than losing weight, suffered badly from its side-effects.
From irrational diet plans to unscientific methods like body massages and appliance sessions, and from stand-alone weight loss products to the single-point half-baked approaches; the cases discussed, covered almost every difficulty one might face in the course of weight loss in the country at present.
"Looking at the scale of the risk obesity poses, it has now become very important to end all confusion around methods of weight loss and come with a complete, infallible solution. This can be achieved only by making a standardized scientific procedure of weight loss and bringing in expertise in the field of nutrition for it," said Komal Deepak, CEO, Panacea Health Education.
"The problem with most of the weight-loss centers and products is that instead of making the person understand the science and logic behind the weight gain, they merely work on creating easy and shortcut methods of weight loss, which could be as irrational as 'mono-diet and sauna bath'," said Divyaa Ravi of Fitness One Group India Ltd.

No proof that patients lose weight after joint replacement surgery

Hip and knee replacements are now a common surgical procedure with more than 700,000 total joint arthroplasties (TJAs) performed in the US every year. Due to the reduction in pain and increases in mobility experienced after having a TJA, it could be expected that weight loss may occur as a by-product of the surgery. But is this the case? This is the question posed by Maria Inacio, a doctoral candidate from the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego, who is employed at Kaiser Permanente, and her colleagues at those institutions. They conducted a review of the current literature to find out. Their results appear online in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, published by Springer.
Obesity itself is one of the major risk factors leading to the need for a hip or knee replacement. Activity can be severely restricted by joint pain in these individuals and one might presume weight loss would occur postoperatively as mobility improves with increased activity levels. Such weight loss could reduce the risk of complications such as prosthetic loosening, thus reducing the chances of requiring further surgery.
The authors conducted a review of twelve studies meeting their criteria. They considered the studies thus far in this area to be of generally low quality with small sample sizes and poor methods, leading to a risk of bias. Overall the studies reported between 14 percent to 49 percent of patients had lost weight a year after having a TJA. However, the ranges of weight loss suggested inconsistent loss and the differences in the study designs meant that overall there was no conclusive pattern. In fact, the studies showed that more patients gained weight than lost.
In a CORR Insights commentary on the manuscript, Stuart B. Goodman, MD, PhD, of Stanford University said, "Obese patients frequently tell clinicians that they are overweight because their painful hips or knees limit their physical activities and their capability to 'burn calories.' Unfortunately, after a comprehensive analysis of the data, the answer to this important question is still unknown."
Inacio and colleagues believe that since TJAs are such a common surgery, further research in this field is warranted and a large representative national study would be desirable. Weight loss, either to prevent the development of osteoarthritis or to reduce long-term morbidity after a hip or knee replacement is extremely desirable in this population. Current evidence is not sufficiently robust to provide an accurate picture, and clinically effective measures cannot be put into place unless the present situation is understood.

What's your reaction to Mayor Bloomberg's attempt to win public support for his ban on large, sugary drinks? In general, do you welcome government health initiatives, or are politicians infringing on personal freedoms? Join the conversation on "The Call" at 9 p.m. with NY1's John Schiumo, or email your thoughts.
At an event in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens today, the mayor said it is not about eliminating consumer choice, but educating people about portion control.
"People say we shouldn't be dictating what size containers soft drinks come in. The manufacturers have been doing that since day one. We've just been late to the party," said Bloomberg.
"This type of mindful eating, is an important habit to build to avoid what we call 'mindless eating,'" said Weight Watchers North America President Dave Burwick.
The city's Board of Health is scheduled to vote on the mayor's proposal on September 13.
If approved, it would take effect in the spring.

Arizona Weight Loss Clinic Announces End of Summer Discount on Modified HCG Program
Posted: August 31, 2012 at 9:13 am
PHOENIX, Ariz., Aug. 31, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - The premier Arizona weight loss clinic, Phoenix Integrative Medicine, is now offering the Modified HCG Diet at 25% off as an end of summer special. Dr. Andrea O'Connor is the medical director at the Phoenix weight loss clinic, and she has maintained over a 90% success rate with patients on the modified HCG Phoenix program. Two follow up visits are included with the 25% discount.
With the 25% discount, the normal price of $199 is reduced to $149. The clinic number is (480) 252-3799.
The conventional HCG Scottsdale program only lets a person intake 500 calories a day. However, the modified calorie HCG program allows patients over double this amount, at 1000-1200 daily calories. Along with this, people are allowed increased activity, whereas, the traditional HCG diet prohibits any exercising.
Along with allowing more daily calories, the modified program also allows a higher HCG dose, with the cumulative weight loss that occurs typically being similar to the traditional program. The new program is better tolerated by patients than the older restrictive program.
Also included with the special rate are a couple follow up visits. The typical amount of weight loss seen with the HCG diet is over 30 pounds, regardless of whether sublingual drops or injections are used. Dr. O'Connor uses both, depending on the needs of the patient.
For people interested in the modified HCG program with the discount should call (480) 252-3799 for more information and scheduling. Patients can also schedule directly on the website.

Women taking part in a weight loss program at St. Anthony's Hospital said slimming down for the long term takes persistence, creativity, patience and accountability.

Bea Eberley pulls out resistance bands when she doesn't feel like exercising. LaWanna Porter keeps a list of what she eats and counts her calories.
Both are a part of a yearlong pilot study that could be a model health care professionals will want to reproduce. The program uses a multidisciplinary approach, calling on dietitians, fitness experts, psychologists and other health professionals to help participants lose weight and keep it off.
Overall, it helps them change their lifestyles, said the clinic's creator, Dr. Kautilya Mehta.
As doctors, we tell patients to lose weight all the time, he said. This is actually getting them to weight loss.
Living a healthier lifestyle and losing weight is important, he said, particularly in a place like Oklahoma where obesity, a lack of exercise and other unhealthy habits lead to heart disease and other chronic health conditions.

4 Eating Habits May Help Older Women Maintain Weight Loss
Posted: August 30, 2012 at 11:16 am
By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter Latest Diet & Weight Management News
TUESDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDay News) -- Older women who want to keep off weight -- no small feat for many after menopause -- might consider four specific eating behaviors, according to new research.
"Losing weight and maintaining a weight loss is incredibly difficult," said Bethany Barone Gibbs, an assistant professor of health and physical activity at the University of Pittsburgh.
She looked at both short-term and long-term changes made by nearly 500 overweight or obese women, all in their late 50s.
She found specific eating habits linked with weight loss -- or no weight loss.
Long-term, those who decreased desserts, sugary beverages and cheeses and meats (which were grouped together) and increased fruits and vegetables did best.
The study is published in the September issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Barone Gibbs looked at two time points -- six months and four years. The behavior changes at the six-month mark linked with weight changes were not the same as those linked with weight control at the four-year mark.
At six months, eating fewer desserts, eating fewer fried foods, drinking fewer sugary beverages, eating more fish and eating out less were linked with more weight loss.
However, at the four-year mark, not all those behaviors were still linked with weight loss. This finding suggests that some behaviors aren't typically maintained long-term, she said.

Post-Menopausal Women Have Special Weight Loss Challenges
Posted: August 29, 2012 at 3:13 pm
By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on August 29, 2012
Maintaining weight loss can be a challenging task that becomes more difficult with age.
Post-menopausal women have it particularly tough as hormonal changes and the aging process slow energy expenditure.
Researchers have found that some behaviors that help a woman lose or control her weight earlier in life, may not be effective or sustainable for the long term.Researchers thus suggest that attention to these behaviors may improve long-term obesity treatment outcomes.
Long-term improvements in weight control are tied to learning to eat a healthy diet, such as enhanced consumption of fruit and nuts, rather than the total avoidance of substances such as fried foods.
Lead investigator Bethany Barone Gibbs, Ph.D., explains that a number of factors work against long-term weight loss.
Not only does motivation decrease after you start losing weight, there are physiological changes, including a decreased resting metabolic rate. Appetite-related hormones increase. Researchers studying the brain are now finding that you have enhanced rewards and increased motivation to eat when youve lost weight.
Thus biological changes in response to losing weight and as a function of the aging process, contribute to make it very difficult for older women to lose weight and maintain weight loss.
Traditional behavioral treatments for obesity, focused on caloric intake, have had poor long-term results.
In the study, investigators sought to determine if changes in eating behaviors and selected foods were associated with weight loss at six and 48 months in a group of overweight post-menopausal women.
