How to best help your child lose weight: Lose weight yourself
Posted: March 15, 2012 at 4:18 pm
ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) A study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and The University of Minnesota indicates that a parent's weight change is a key contributor to the success of a child's weight loss in family-based treatment of childhood obesity. The results were just published in the advanced online edition of the journal Obesity.
"We looked at things such as parenting skills and styles, or changing the home food environment, and how they impacted a child's weight," said Kerri N. Boutelle, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at UC San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. "The number one way in which parents can help an obese child lose weight? Lose weight themselves. In this study, it was the most important predictor of child weight loss."
Recent data suggests that 31 percent of children in the United States are overweight or obese, or between four and five million children. Current treatment programs generally require participation by both parents and children in a plan that combines nutrition education and exercise with behavior therapy techniques.
"Parents are the most significant people in a child's environment, serving as the first and most important teachers," said Boutelle "They play a significant role in any weight-loss program for children, and this study confirms the importance of their example in establishing healthy eating and exercise behaviors for their kids."
The researchers looked at eighty parent-child groups with an 8 to 12-year-old overweight or obese child, who participated in a parent-only or parent + child treatment program for five months.
The study focused on evaluating the impact of three types of parenting skills taught in family-based behavioral treatment for childhood obesity, and the impact of each on the child's body weight: the parent modeling behaviors to promote their own weight loss, changes in home food environment, and parenting style and techniques (for example, a parent's ability to help limit the child's eating behavior, encouraging the child and participating in program activities).
Consistent with previously published research, parent BMI change was the only significant predictor of child's weight loss.
The researchers concluded that clinicians should focus on encouraging parents to lose weight to help their overweight or obese child in weight management.

Instantly Tap into the Experience of Your Entire Sales Force with Insight™: Innovative Win/loss Intelligence Software …
Posted: March 15, 2012 at 12:46 pm
DALLAS, March 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Ignite Intelligence Solutions, an innovator in win/loss analytics, announces Insight, a software platform that captures and consolidates sales force intelligence, transforming it into clear strategies to help companies improve win-rates, enhance product features, and reduce competitive risks.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120314/CG70635)
Implementing a win/loss analysis program can boost sales as much as 30% according to analyst firm Gartner, but many win/loss programs focus primarily on customer feedback and overlook the valuable knowledge and experience gained by the sales force. Insight takes a different approach with a crowd-sourcing model to collect and share deal insights from front-line sales professionals. Insight enables salespeople to quickly and easily capture what worked and what didn't during the sales cycle, making their hard-won information permanently part of the organization's knowledgebase. Tactics leading to successful sales and previously unseen pitfalls are immediately shared throughout the organization.
Additionally, the comprehensive business intelligence provided by the Insight platform transforms collected sales information into solid, actionable data that provides competitive feedback and increases knowledge sharing efficiency across sales, marketing, and product management.
"Conducting win/loss reviews isn't a new idea, but in the traditional model where marketing or product teams own the process, the sales organization remains a largely untapped source of valuable business intelligence," says Rick Marcet, author of "Win/Loss Reviews: A New Knowledge Model for Competitive Intelligence". "Harnessing deal insights from sales professionals provides companies with a real advantage to beat the competition. A product like Insight, which is designed to capture key deal factors around a win or loss, makes it easy for organizations to launch a sales-driven win/loss review program and quickly achieve results."
Insight can be deployed as a stand-alone tool or used to complement traditional win/loss review programs and adheres to the data principle of "enter once, use often", leveraging and augmenting information that already exists in a company's CRM system.

Weight Loss & Kids: Ask The Dietician
Posted: March 15, 2012 at 12:46 pm
COLUMBUS, Ohio --
The battle of the bulge is a struggle many children know before they even hit middle school. American children are facing an obesity epidemic.
The critical issue is that overweight or obese children face a long list of health problems starting at an early age.
"Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol...these kids are really, really sick. It's not just about them being overweight. They have other health complications," said Lexi Klenke, a registered dietitian at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Klenke says sugar, especially in drinks like pop and sports drinks, is one of the top reasons more kids are packing on the weight.
"Our drinks are another big issue that is causing us to take in more calories than our body is burning," said Klenke.
Alyssa Bixler, a registered dietitian with Riverside Methodist Hospital and the McConnell Heart Health Center in Columbus offers some tips for parents. She recommends switching white bread and pasta for whole grain options.
"One of my favorites is Barilla plus pasta. It doesn't taste like whole grain pasta, but has fiber, protein and omega 3 fats," said Bixler.
She also said there is no need to shy away from putting cheese on veggies if it helps kids eat their vegetables. Just do it in moderation.
"Go ahead and put cheese on it. That is ok. Instead of cheese sauce, put real cheese on there," said Bixler. She also recommends drinking water or milk instead of sugar packed drinks and soda.

Santiago Horgan, M.D., chief of minimally invasive surgery and director of the UC San Diego Bariatric Metabolic Institute, said:
According to Horgan, the 1-hour procedure is comparable to the art of origami. Gastric plication is performed laparoscopically and is potentially reversible. In order to reach the stomach to place the folds, 1 to 5 incisions are made in the abdomen. One or two folds (depending on the size of the patient's stomach) are then created with non-absorbable sutures.
Horgan, explained:
Individuals undergoing the procedure are only hospitalized for 1 or 2 days and can return to normal activities in one week. Candidates must have a body mass index of at least 27.
The procedure not only helps with weight loss, but also has associated benefits according to Horgan. Several patients are able to reduce their diabetes, depression and blood pressure medications. These long-term results are the result of a combination of surgery, exercise and healthy eating.

Premier Surgical to relocate weight loss program
Posted: March 14, 2012 at 7:33 am
Premier Surgical Associates is relocating its surgical weight loss program to Turkey Creek Medical Center from Parkwest Medical Center.
The first bariatric procedure at the new Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Turkey Creek Medical is scheduled for next week. It will represent the first time the surgery has been available to patients at a Tennova facility.
"We're very excited about this move. Patients are going to get the same great care and the same program capabilities," Premier CEO Kevin Burris said.
The surgical weight loss program will be under the direction of Drs. Stephen Boyce and K. Robert Williams of New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery, which is a part of Premier Surgical Associates.
The New Life Center has been affiliated with Parkwest since 2005, but those services will transition over the next couple of months to Turkey Creek Medical Center.
When asked why Premier was relocating the program, Burris deferred comment to Parkwest's parent company, Covenant Health. Premier had initially explored expanding its weight loss services, he added. Premier also operates Foothills Weight Loss Specialists in Maryville.
"Covenant was a great partner, but we're looking forward to working with Tennova," Burris said.
Covenant Health could not be reached for comment.
At Parkwest, the New Life Center saw about 750 bariatric consultations annually, resulting in about 450 bariatric surgery cases.
"The addition of this comprehensive surgical weight loss program is another example of the technology and expertise we are adding to our campus to support the community," Dr. Walt Chiles, III, chair of the medical staff leadership committee at Turkey Creek Medical Center, said in a news release.

Wrestlers scale down on drastic weight-cutting measures

Coach Brian Smith will gather his Missouri wrestlers for a team meal tonight in anticipation of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Thursday through Saturday at Scottrade Center. The pre-tourney dinner has become a ritual for the Tigers, and the table will be especially full and boisterous this year because Missouri is the only team to qualify wrestlers in all 10 weight classes.
What a change from Smith's competitive days at Michigan State in the late 1980s and early '90s.
"The night before a meet, guys would never eat," Smith said. "We'd be trying to cut 10 pounds or more before the weigh-in. I look back and say 'I'm so glad we don't have that any more.'"
But the sport needed a triple tragedy 15 years ago to see the light.
Three collegiate wrestlers died in a span of 33 days in 1997, each trying to "cut weight." The practice involves drastic methods, such as fasting, vomiting, excessive exercise in saunas or sweat suits and other dehydrating practices, to quickly drop 10 pounds or more.
Cutting weight was viewed as a point of pride, a badge of honor, a part of the culture.
The methods caused pervasive physical side effects, including fatigue and greater risk of injury because of a lack of fluids in the joints. Though considered a sign of mental toughness, cutting weight also could exact a psychological toll.
"The kids would focus on the scale instead of wrestling," Smith said. "They would worry about how much weight they had to lose vs. how to improve technique."
The NCAA Wrestling Committee moved swiftly to enact sweeping changes in the same season, and the new rules spread to the high school level within a few years.
Among the changes:
