George Clooney Was Hospitalized With Pancreatitis After Losing 30 Pounds for Midnight Sky – Prevention.com

Posted: December 13, 2020 at 10:55 am

George Clooney may have gotten a little too into character for his latest film role. In The Midnight Sky he plays Augustine, a gout astronomer with cancer who, as the sole survivor of an apocalyptic event, braces for the Earthbound return of astronauts who have no clue their planet is inhabitable. According to the U.K.s Mirror, the Oscar-winning actor lost 30 pounds to achieve Augustines emaciated state, which hospitalized him with pancreatitis four days before filming began.

According to Mayo Clinic, pancreatitis is caused by inflammation of the pancreas. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. It occurs when digestive enzymes become activated while still in the pancreas, irritating the cells of your pancreas and causing inflammation, per the clinic.

I think I was trying too hard to lose the weight quickly and probably wasnt taking care of myself, Clooney told Mirror. The 59-year-old also directed the film, and his diagnosis took a toll on early production.

It took a few weeks to get better and as a director its not so easy because you need energy, he explained. On the upside, the condition played right into Augustine. We were out on this glacier in Finland, which made it a lot harder work. But it certainly helped with the character, Clooney said. This is bigger than anything Ive done before and it was like herding cats to get it done. But, you know, it was fun.

As Augustine, Clooney is nearly unrecognizable. Hes obviously thinner and sports a shaved head and gray, scraggly beard. He told Mirror that his wife Amal and 3-year-old daughter, Ella were not the biggest fans of the facial hair.

[They] were really happy when it came off because it was very hard to find a face underneath all that mess, he said. But Ellas twin brother Alexander loved it because hed hide things in it, which I wouldnt know about until I got to work and Id be like, Oh, theres a popsicle stuck in my beard, he quipped.

According to Clooneys recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the film wrapped in February, just before coronavirus lockdowns ravaged the globe. The Midnight Sky premieres on Netflix on Dec. 23.

Is slow the best speed for fatty liver weight loss? – Marshall News Messenger

Posted: December 13, 2020 at 10:55 am

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had fatty liver for the past 10 years. To reverse it, I am trying to lose weight. Now I am 116 kilograms. I have heard that if someone has fatty liver and wants to lose weight, they should not lose more than 1.5 kg per week. This week, I lost 3 kg. What is your advice? A.A.

ANSWER: The advice against too much weight loss too quickly was based on an observation that some people rebounded their weight after losing it. Newer studies have not confirmed that. In fact, people with large amounts of weight loss (more than 2 kg in the first four weeks) have been shown to have a better chance of keeping the weight off. If you are losing weight due to healthier diet and exercise, I would advise continuing those behaviors and not worrying about losing too much too quickly.

Any kind of weight loss can temporarily increase the risk of gallstones. Having some sources of healthy fat in the diet (such as nuts or avocados) will decrease this risk.

Early on in the first few weeks of weight loss, especially in people using a higher fat diet, much of the apparent weight loss is by loss of water associated with glycogen stores.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is an epiretinal membrane? My doctor says I have this but it is not bad enough to be treated. I am 86 years old, and my vision is blurry. How would this be treated? T.V.

ANSWER: An epiretinal membrane, also called a macular pucker, is a thin layer that forms over the retina at the back of the eye. It is semi-translucent, and as such can cause loss of vision or visual distortion. They are common and occur more frequently in older individuals. Most of the time, they do not require treatment. They can form for no particular reason, and these are usually asymptomatic. However, an epiretinal membrane can form after certain eye conditions, especially retinal detachment. Its possible for it to attach to and pull the retina, causing distortions in the vision. It may also decrease vision when it is thicker and interfering with the function of the retina.

The only treatment is surgery. The decision to perform surgery is made by how much the vision is affected. Although surgery is relatively safe and usually effective, there are possible complications. Most eye doctors do not rush to surgery, except in less-common cases where there is swelling in the most critical part of the retina (called the macula) for central vision. People whose epiretinal membrane gets worse, or who have the kind that can pull the retina out of shape, may also require surgery.

DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on pneumonia vaccines contained an error: I said that the 13-valent conjugate vaccine, Prevnar, was a 2-dose series. It is a single dose. Many people get both the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine, Pneumovax, as well as the 13-valent Prevnar, but my column misstated this. I appreciate my sharp-eyed colleagues who wrote in to correct this.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu or send mail to 628 Virginia Dr., Orlando, FL 32803.

Libby Lost 38 Lb. On Weight Watchers After Years Of Yo-Yo DietingHeres How She Made It Work! – SheFinds

Posted: December 13, 2020 at 10:55 am

Libby Woockstruggled with her weight for years before finding a system that worked for her.She tells SheFinds, Growing up, I was never skinny, and I was always the bigger girl compared to my friends.

Now, at 35 years old, Libby has committed to a lifestyle that works for her bodybut that doesnt mean there wasnt plenty of trial and error before finding what actually worked. It wasnt until three years ago that Libby joined WW.

Before that, she tried out plenty of other quick fixes that never did the trick. She explains, Of course I tried other dietslike Southbeach, as well as body wraps that claimed would jumpstart a healthier lifestyle (it did not!).

100+ Gift Ideas For Everyone On Your Holiday List

She didn't feel the push to join Weight Watchers until October 2017 when she reached her heaviest weight.

"I remember feeling disgusted and frustrated--not just with how my clothes fit but also with the person I was seeing in the mirror," Libby explained. "I've always been 110% dedicated to my family and my full-time job, and decided it was finally time to put that same effort into myself."

When she joined WW, Libby said she started to notice tangible, sustainable changes--mostly because it wasn't just a diet, but a lifestyle change.

"When I joined WW, I started participating in meetings and looked forward to the weekly weigh-ins. I realized pretty quickly that it was not a diet, but a lifestyle change you need to commit to," Libby explained.

These lifestyle changes first had more to do with smarter food choices, starting at the grocery store.

"I made sure to start creating lists before grocery shopping and made a point to steer clear of junk food like ice cream (my weakness) and chips, that I knew I would most likely finish within a day or two. To this day, more than half of my list is fresh fruits and vegetables that I incorporate into my daily meals and snacks," Libby said.

She didn't start adding exercise to her routine until later.

"At first, there were no workouts involved although I did slowly turn my basement into a small DIY gym and spent hours outdoors walking my neighborhood and riding my bicycle. I eventually hopped on the FitBit train and enjoyed using it to track my steps and workouts, which also connected to the WW app, allowing me to connect with fellow members and become bigger part of the community," she explains.

After committing to WW, Libby was able to reach her goal weight, losing 38 lbs. total. But the lower weight is only one of the changes she's noticed; her improved confidence is another.

"Even now, it's wild for me to look back on old photos or even shop for new clothes (which I had to do after the weight came off)! But I finally feel comfortable in my own skin, and I've gained confidence I never had before," she says.

She adds, "I even became a COVID-bride in October and bought my wedding dress online--something I would have never done for any article of clothing before WW."

And the dress fit perfectly.

UAE weight-loss: ‘How I lost 12kg in 7 months thanks to family’ – Gulf News

Posted: December 10, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Chetali Sachin Patil before (left) and after Image Credit: Supplied

One of the few positive things about a pandemic is call timings when you are available and when your loved ones are line up more easily. For Chetali Sachin Patil, who has been trying for a few years to get back to her lean physique, the quick WhatsApp back and forth that began for news of illness and state of home country turned to conversations about fitness.

The 34-year-old Indian says, In March when the pandemic started, the women in my family decided now we have some time to stay home, lets focus all together to work out. So we made a group, separate WhatsApp group [with just us] and started helping each other out.

The support group came as a result of not only availability but also frustration. I was always on the slimmer side when I came to UAE, says the five-foot-one-inch expat. But once she had her baby, she stopped working for a while.

Being confined to a flat and just sitting it meant putting on weight.

This was in 2013. The doctor told me it can lead to trouble so you should get fit. But I was not having any proper guidance so I ended up buying a costly gym membership and I was going to the gym, but I wasnt guided by a proper nutritionist, she says. And so the weight kept rising.

Fast-forward to 2020, when the procurement officer had started working and working out but could not see a change in kilos. Speaking to family members, Patil realized that each member of this group brought something to the table. Some were yoga teachers, others knew a lot about nutrition, still others knew muscle specific exercises. And so the chat group was formed. We try to help and motivate each other. And this is the main thing - my family supported me its what helped me drop the weight, she explains.

Another thing she did was cut out food from outside, instead she began to experiment in her own kitchen. Even if I was making junk [food], I was making it at home. And [I was making] a healthier version. Like, they are using cream, Im using yoghurt. So I replaced those unhealthy versions with my healthy versions without compromising on the taste. So I kept exploring, she tells Gulf News.

Besides the inspiration she drew from the women fighting beside her for a fitter lifestyle, she went looking for stories of others who had achieved the seemingly elusive goal. I started seeing so many motivational videos from many people who lost weight, talking about how they lost weight. From them I learnt portion control and [to] include protein in your diet, she says.

This didnt mean changing the style of food she ate. I found what are the main sources of protein for me and how can I include it in my family style. I dont make special meals for me but I try to include one compulsory protein and salad in each ones [the entire familys] diet. That really helped me balance my macros and with my nutrition, she explains.

And she began to track her macros on a fitness app.

When COVID-19 threw a curve ball and she was unable to go to the gym, she continued her exercises at home.

At the end of seven months, Patil was down 12 kg.

Theres a mental health angle to this shedding of weight as well, she says, calling for a shift in perspective. Once I stopped thinking about weight loss, I started shedding weight. Earlier, I was focusing on weight loss weight loss, but when it doesnt happen no you get very disappointed. Now I realise [being fit] is not related to weight loss. You should have a proper healthy and balanced lifestyle.

You should love your body - if you love your body, your body will reply with positive results. I started feeling quite light and happy after I have reduced some unnecessary fat from my body. Its not about weight loss its about healthy lifestyle.

And of course, she says, When my old clothes fit, it feels amazing.

Local pediatricians say they’ve seen increase in anxiety, depression in young patients – KMOV.com

Posted: December 10, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Click here for updates on this story

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -- According to a CDC report, mental health-related emergency department visits are up 24 percent for kids ages five to 11 and up 31 percent for kids ages 12 to 17.

Dr. Beth Torwekar works at Randall Childrens Hospital and sees this firsthand.

Were seeing increased depression, anxiety, as well as increased eating disorders, and then in kids of all ages, just sort of the physical manifestations of stress, she said.

Its not just at hospitals. Dr. Deidre Burton with Metropolitan Pediatrics said shes treating more kids during office visits as well.

Some of our kids are more withdrawn, theyre not engaging, theyre not doing the activities they usually would like to do, so were just seeing a lot more sadness and anxiety, said Burton.

Burton said school-aged kids have been especially impacted.

Going to school virtually is devastating for our kids, frankly. The things that help them be resilient and help them achieve their developmental milestones have just been stripped away," said Burton. "But if you look at European countries, they basically did the reverse of what we did. Theyve closed their pubs and restaurants and service industries but kept their schools open and what weve seen is that schools have not been large centers of cluster spreads or sources of infection.

So, at this point, Im concerned that the short-term risks and long-term impact on the emotional well-being of our children and their development is going to outweigh the benefit of being home, Burton continued.

Pediatricians are urging parents to look for signs of stress during this time and regularly check in with their childs doctor if they have questions or concerns.

It could be more challenges with sleeping, sleep training in your infants and toddlers, loss of milestones, like maybe your baby was sleeping through the night and now its harder, said Torwekar. In your school-aged kids, somatic symptoms, you know, belly aches, headaches, stress.

All of these are probably fairly normal during this time, continued Torwekar.

They also said parents should take action when they think its time.

I would always say that if a parent feels worried about their child, they should trust their gut, said Torwekar. As far as more hard and fast guidelines for us as pediatricians, we often think of objective markers, like a kid is losing weight, a kid has lost school performance, or is exhibiting poor hygiene, or a teenager is engaging in high-risk behaviors, like substance abuse, things that they hadnt engaged in before any time.

And then of course, any time a teenager is confessing thoughts of self-harm or feeling suicidal, those would be for sure moments when they would need an evaluation by a medical provider, she continued.

Both pediatricians suggest asking kids positive questions, like "what did you learn today or whats something funny that happened," so they can celebrate small moments.

They also recommend being intentional about setting up virtual or socially distanced hangouts with their friends.

Finally, they said just be gentle with yourself and your kids during this time.

Dr. Torwekar wrote a book about COVID-19, targeted towards kids. For more information, click here.

Holy weight-loss, the Wyze Scale is an amazing deal at $19.54 shipped – CNET

Posted: December 9, 2020 at 3:57 am

For just $25, the Wyze Scale measures not only weight, but also body fat, BMI, heart rate and more.

Friends, let us not be ruled by the bathroom scale. Must we define our self-worth by a number at our feet? Are we to let our days be ruined upon discovering we've gained a pound? Nay, I tell you. Nay! Cast your scales into the river and look upon them no more.

Wait a sec... scale deal! The Wyze Scale normally sells for $20, plus $9 for shipping -- or $29 shipped if you buy it from Amazon. For a limited time, however, you can get the Wyze Scale for $19.54 shipped. Sure, that's only about a $9 savings, but when a product is this affordable to begin with, a discount is a discount. Plus, it's the lowest price on record.

Subscribe to CNET's Cheapskate newsletter and save on everything from phones to gadgets and more.

Wyze is the company behind a growing catalog of crazy-inexpensive smart home products, including the$20 CNET-favorite Wyze Cam, $7 Wyze Bulb and$100 Wyze Lock.

Like many of its smart ilk, the Wyze Scale pairs with your phone so you can track various metrics: weight, of course, but also things like body-fat percentage, muscle mass, metabolic age and half a dozen others. It even measures heart rate. All this happens courtesy of electrical signals sent through your feet. Thankfully, it has weight-only safety modes for pregnant women and people with pacemakers.

Read more:The best smart scales for 2020

What impressed me most about the scale is the design: It's really pretty, looking like something that could easily cost $100, and it has heft. (You can't begrudge Wyze charging a shipping fee for this.) I also like that it supports up to eight users, though that means each person in your family needs a phone, the Wyze app and a Wyze account.

It can integrate with Apple Health and Google Fit now; Fitbit and Samsung Health support are in the works (and have been since the product launched in May, so it's anybody's guess when that will actually happen).

The only real downside I can see is the IPX3 waterproof rating, meaning you shouldn't step out of the shower and directly onto it. Anything more than a small splash could be trouble.

But for $20 out the door? When some smart scales sell for as much as $100 to $150? Heck, you'd be hard-pressed to find a "dumb" scale this cheap.
