The real reason for Craig Tinker’s weight loss explained on Coronation Street – Manchester Evening News

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:54 am

He's noticeably slimmer after returning to our screens after lockdown, and Craig Tinker's weight loss has now been explained on Coronation Street.

The shrinking policeman is much trimmer after taking up running in the ITV soap, and he's revealed the real reason behind his health kick

In Wednesday night's Corrie he told friend and neighbour Faye Windass that he's lost weight in pursuit of romance, as well as to get fitter - and it seems that Faye is the one who's caught his eye.

The truth came out when the longstanding character, who arrived in Weatherfield in 2011, was asked to dance by Faye at Sally and Tim Metcalfe's wedding.

And he told her: "I don't really like dancing because people will stare."

When she asked if it was because of his lack of dance skills he explained: "No I mean because of the way I look."

The teenager reassured him that he looks great and and told him to stop putting himself down.

"It's not about what anyone looks like," she said.

Faye then asked him gently: "Is that why you're trying to lose weight? Only you should be doing it for yourself not because of what a load of idiots think."

And he told her: "I want to get fitter and I guess it would be nice to have a girlfriend."

"Well I think you're lovely. Anyone would be lucky to have you," she said.

Romance looks promising on the cobbles as the pair then made their way together back to Sally and Tim's house after the reception, and the bride commented that they made a 'lovely couple.'

Actor Colson Smith, 22, has shared more photos on Instagram showing his impressive weight loss.

The latest show him walking in the Yorkshire Dales.

"Congratulations on your weight loss. Youre doing so well," commented one fan.

"Amazing transformation ... episodes in Canada now showing the new you. Inspirational," another told him.

"How good are you looking ... you are an inspiration to others," said another.

And another follower told him: "Well done losing all that weight you look brilliant x"

This summer fans remarked how different Craig Tinker looked as he stepped out of the police station looking slimmer and with blonde hair.

After the soap halted filming due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, Colson has been using the time off to focus on his fitness regime, and he's been keeping followers updated on his fitness journey.

He shared a time lapse video of himself working out outdoors with a dumbbell, kettle bells and a medicine ball.

Colson previously joked in lockdown that he'd need a 'fat suit' when he returned to work as he'd look completely different to where the character left off.

British gymnastics says Amy Tinkler’s claims of weight loss are ‘unacceptable’ gymnastics – Positively Scottish

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:54 am

Amy Tinkler, the Olympic bronze medalist in British gymnastics, has called the overweight allegations completely unacceptable.

In an interview with ITV News, Tinkler describes how national coach, Amanda Reddin, accused him of going psycho after finding sweet rappers in her room, and appearing fat. Tinkler also convicted Radin, who was sidelined from the role left for a detailed investigation of his action for an ankle injury that caused him to miss the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

British Gymnastics said in a statement: The incidents reported by Amy are completely unacceptable in our sport. An investigation into several such claims is already underway. These allegations and any additional information that Amy wants to submit will be provided to the relevant investigation.

Last week, Tinkler published a series of emails in which another national coach, Colin Steele, hinted at her being a fat dwarf, and asked British gymnastics to launch a separate investigation.

Tinkler is not the first select GB athlete to question weight-shaming techniques. Rio teammate Lilly Downey revealed that she was asked to lose weight regularly during national camps, and was asked by a nutritionist to provide a food diary of everything she ate, and to post pictures of herself in her underwear every day.

Describing an incident at a training camp before the World Championships, Tinkler said: Amanda came to us and said: I can be a bitch when I want to be a bitch, and this is one of them. Psycho went to us for keeping sweet wrappers in our room. There was a girl whose appearance she liked, her body shape was ideal for her and she said, you should all look like this girl.

But a gymnast does not have the same body shape. We were told that our bodies are just like Americans and they look good and they look muscular and we were told that we are just fat.

In a statement issued by British Gymnastics, Reddy said: [I] In response to these allegations I will have the full support of an independent investigator by submitting all relevant information and evidence.

Speaking for the first time since the allegations were made against him, he said it was really disastrous to learn that the comments he made hurt any exercise. He added: Thanks to me two years ago, I dont remember the record of making these comments. The investigation is ongoing which I fully support and will submit all relevant information and evidence.

One-on-one: Marshal Yanda talks about his dramatic weight loss and post-NFL life – The Athletic

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:54 am

As he spoke on the phone Monday afternoon, Marshal Yanda was seated on a tractor. This is corn harvesting season in Iowa, so Yanda has been spending a chunk of his first year away from the NFL, helping out and doing work on his dads farm.

Yanda lives about 22 miles away from the farm and on many days, hell get on his bike and make the trip in a little over an hour. Then, after a long days work, the former Ravens right guard will hop back on his bike for the trip home.

Its a really good way to get a workout in, Yanda said. Ive really gotten into cycling. I love it. I still feel like I want to get my heart rate up, get my blood pumping. Its really important for me to do that.

The routine probably wont surprise anybody who followed Yandas career. For 13 NFL seasons, Yanda embraced the grind and became one of the top interior offensive linemen in football and one of...

Food for thought: Breast cancer and nutrition – Coastal Courier

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:53 am

One in eight women in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, so whether its you, a friend or loved one, chances are breast cancer has affected your life.

In this column, we will explore ways nutrition can help play an important role in the fight against breast cancer.

Everyone knows adopting a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining physical and mental health. Weve also been taught if we avoid excess sweets, cut-out fast food and close our exercise rings on a daily basis, we will live longer and feel our best. What many people fail to realize is that making similar conscious lifestyle choices can reduce your risk for several chronic illnesses, including breast cancer.

As a registered dietitian, I have seen how nutrition plays an integral role in ones health, from a preventative and recovery standpoint. The following are evidence-based, healthy lifestyle recommendations that may give your body the best fighting chance against breast cancer.

My first recommendation is to make sure you eat a well-balanced diet. A well-balanced diet not only aids in cancer prevention, but helps those going through cancer treatment and those in remission.

A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and protein.

Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, which help our bodies fight free radicals that cause cancer. They are loaded with vitamins and minerals needed for a strong immune system. Try to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. Note: If you are undergoing cancer treatment, your immune system may be weakened so avoid raw fruits and vegetables.

Whole grains provide your body with carbohydrates and fiber. Fiber has many benefits, especially for weight management, decreasing blood cholesterol, or establishing proper bowel function. Sources of whole grains include quinoa, oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat breads and pastas. Try to include a whole grain component in each of your meals.

Although fats have been a controversial topic, they are an essential part of a well-balanced diet. Fats are not produced by our body, which means they need to be consumed through the foods we eat, in moderation. Fats help us absorb certain vitamins, protect our organs and provide us with the energy we need to make it through the day. You want foods with unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats are considered to be good fats and help lower LDL cholesterol, reduce inflammation and build stronger cell membranes. Unsaturated fats are found in nuts, olive oil, avocados, fish and seeds.

Protein is also important. It is is used by your body to help with immune function, cell and tissue repair and for gaining strength.

Protein will also help prevent malnutrition for those undergoing certain cancer treatments. When choosing your protein, focus on lean proteins such as low fat dairy items (cottage cheese, milk, yogurt), lean meats (chicken breast, pork tenderloins, salmon), soy beans, eggs, and nuts.

It is also important to avoid excess consumption of certain ingredients if you are actively focused on cancer prevention, treatment or recovery. For example, alcohol intake can increase your risk of cancer. A multitude of research studies have exposed that even small amounts of alcohol can increase your chances of developing esophageal, neck, head, liver and breast cancer. Since even small quantities of alcohol intake can have a big impact, cutting down on alcohol will decrease your cancer risk.

Another component is maintaining or achieving a healthy weight. The best way to do this safely is to choose a well-balanced diet and include physical activity into your daily routine.

Exercise can also decrease your risk of developing certain cancers, including breast cancer. As we all know, regular physical activity can help us lose weight; but, it has other important benefits. Exercise can help regulate certain hormone levels, as well as speed up digestion, which ultimately decreases the amount of time that potentially harmful substances stay in our bodies. Last, including strength training exercises into your routine can help those undergoing cancer treatment retain muscle mass and may help decrease the risk for malnutrition.

Before making any changes to your lifestyle, consult a doctor or registered dietitian first. Remember, change can start with something small and grow from there.

How to Stay Safe at the Gym During Cold and Flu Season – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:53 am

Theres many reasons why exercise and going to the gym is good for us. But now (more than ever) if were not following the proper guidelines to stop the spread of germs, our well-meaning habit could end up hurting our health and those around us.

Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services.Policy

So how do we reduce our risk of illness and keep each other safe at the gym this cold and flu season? (And also in the middle of a global pandemic!) Sports medicine specialist Caitlin Lewis, MD, gives these tips for avoiding gym germs and staying healthy.

Many people will soon head back indoors to gyms when the weather breaks for fall and winter, potentially making it more crowded than it may have been in the spring and summer.

If you can, I would recommend trying to exercise outdoors for as long as possible, says Dr. Lewis. Or find an at-home program you enjoy and can stick with.

If youre feeling sick (especially this year), just stay home. Cold and flu season mixed with the COVID-19 pandemic is a threat to everyone and your daily workout isnt worth putting other peoples health at-risk.

Missing a day or two at the gym isnt going to undo all your hard work or cause you to lose your gains either. In fact, allowing your body to rest and recover could help you bounce back quicker than just trying to power through.

That being said, some people feel better after a good sweat sesh, especially if theyre congested or their sickness is very mild. The increased blood flow and movement can sometimes do the body good. In these instances, Dr. Lewis recommends playing it safe and choosing an at-home workout or walking or running outside in a non-crowded area. Youll want to pay attention to how youre feeling and modify the workout if you become fatigued or feel worse than before.

Were still learning about COVID-19s long-term implications, especially when it comes to the heart and athletes, says Dr. Lewis. So if youre diagnosed with the virus, youll need to check with your doctor once you recover for a graduated return to exercise program. Your doctor will work with you to ensure your heart and lungs have recovered and its safe for you to return to the gym or training.

Still, its even more crucial this year to get your flu shot to help fend off illness.

Is calorie counting the only way to achieve sustainable weight loss? – Health24

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:51 am

In these times, there's a never-ending search for the best weight-loss diet. Ideally, we want a quick fix that will lead to significant weight loss in a short period of time.

Unfortunately, after short, drastic regimes, people tend to regain the lost weight fast.

Weight-loss plans that are considered most successful are the ones that control calories, include all the necessary macronutrients and don't exclude any food groups. But how good are they really? Let's look at the most recent research in terms of long-term success.

An energy balance

Weight gain is a result of an imbalance of energy: too much food (energy) consumed, compared to the amount of energy used (expended). The excess energy is converted into fat and stored in the body.

Although this sounds simple, the factors that influence energy intake and expenditure are varied and complex. It involves numerous biological, genetic, environmental, behavioural and psychological factors.

Restricting your calories

An initial calorie deficit can certainly lead to successful weight loss. This means that you need to be taking in less energy than you are expending. The good news is that according to research, even modest weight loss (510% of bodyweight) can result in significant health benefits, reducing your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and inflammatory conditions.

There are various versions of calorie restriction: moderate (13001500kCal per day), low (9001200kCal per day) and very low (<900kCal/day).

Choosing one depends on individual goals. If you are someone who usually consumes 3 000kCal per day, a daily energy prescription of 100kCal would be rather difficult to achieve (and certainly too challenging to keep up).

The problem with only focusing on calorie restriction is the long-term sustainability (>6 to 12 months). Avoiding regaining lost weight can be challenging.

The reason is that if we do not change our habits and long-term behaviour when it comes to food, we can easily fall back into the habits that caused the weight gain in the first place.

As we lose weight, our bodies need fewer calories to sustain our lower weight. And, in some cases, dysregulation of appetite can be a problem. A study noted that for every kilogram lost, there was an increase in appetite of about 400 kilojoules (100kCal) per day which of course makes sustaining weight loss more challenging. The body has compensatory mechanisms that start to increase appetite and reduce the satiety (fullness) effect, which can lead to overeating.

A better method

It appears that the most effective weight loss plan (that also focuses on improving health outcomes) aims to focus not only on the quantity of food consumed (calorie control) but on the quality of the macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

There is a strong body of evidence that shows that besides changing your behaviour and habits around food, you need to engage in physical activity to sustain weight loss in the long term.

A registered dietitian can support you by helping you develop the systems and skills needed to change your habits. They can also calculate an individualised eating plan, taking your unique lifestyle, food preferences and nutrient requirements into consideration. They can develop a plan that is affordable, accessible, culturally acceptable, and enjoyable (so that you don't feel too restricted).

In summary

To conclude, calorie counting or calorie restriction is an essential part of a successful weight loss programme. However, we need to reach beyond that to sustain weight loss in the long term. Following an individualised, nutritionally-balanced eating plan that tastes good, addressing bad habits and getting moving will all ultimately form part of the new lifestyle you need to develop to sustain weight loss.

What is intermittent fasting? Simple tips to do it safely – DNA India

Posted: October 8, 2020 at 5:51 am

What is Intermittent Fasting?

A diet plan that has become quite popular among millennials these days, intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that alternates between periods of eating and fasting.

Unlike other diet planswhich proposes that a person eat in moderation or restrict oneself to certain 'fattening' food items in order to lose weight, intermittent fasting's goal is to starve the body for long enough so that it triggers the burning of fat. Such a diet plan where one is fasting for long stretches of time that can go up to 12-18 hours, helps in weight loss, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, controlled diabetes and also helps in improving immunity.

Intermittent fasting is not good for everyone though.

Children and teens, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with disabilities type 1, persons with eating disorders, people with other medical issues, underweight or elderly should not try intermittent fasting. Also, a quick note, fasting can be unsafe if overdone or not done correctly.

So, in order to understand how intermittent fasting can be taken up correctly, we at DNA spoke with Pooja Banga, Director and Nutritionist at Cultivating Health, who helped us list a few points that will help you in taking up intermittent fasting successfully if at all you plan to.

The rules are simple:

Drink Water

Water is really essential for the body. It keeps you hydrated and gives you a feeling of being full. While many commit the mistake of not drinking enough water while intermittent fasting, it is advised otherwise.

Lower intake of water makes one feel weak and drowsy.

Begin with short gaps

For those wanting to try intermittent fasting for the first time or are just a couple of weeks into it, it is advised that you begin with shorter gaps between meals because our body is not accustomed to going without food for long hours. Therefore, to get your body habituated to going without solids for long hours can take some time, even weeks.

Those who begin with longer gaps can experience headache, dizziness, etc.

For beginners, it is important, to begin with, shorter gaps of 7-8 hours. You can also try taking your dinner at 8 pm and then eat the next day at 12 noon. This way you won't crave for food and will be able to fast for long hours.

Avoid over-eating during intermittent fasting

Overeating is the common mistake that we can do unknowingly. Generally, people eat a lot thinking they have to fast for long hours. The motive behind intermittent fasting is to consume fewer calories. If you overeat or consume excess calories the motive behind intermittent fasting is defeated.

Therefore, overeating with the thought that you have to go without food for long hours won't serve your purpose. Eating healthy and in moderation, keeping in mind to not indulge in processed or unhealthy food items is the ultimate trick to successfully undertaking intermittent fasting.

Be aware of not eating less

While intake of fewer calories is the ultimate aim of intermittent fasting, it doesn't mean that you have to eat less. Moderation is the key. Eating less will only deprive your body of the essential nutrients and make you weak, which of course isn't something that w want.

So, eat mindfully and healthy.

Whether to workout or not?

Do not skip your workout. Prefer doing it for a shorter time period, say, 30-40 minutes. An intense workout is not advised while intermittent fasting as your calorie intake is less. Prefer taking up yoga, brisk walking etc that will help you stay occupied and not drain you at the same time.

Have patience

Lastly, if you are intermittent fasting for weight loss, you have to be patient since it is a long and steady process which has long term health benefits. In fact, fasting has its own benefits like, it increases growth hormone secretion which is important for growth, metabolism, weight loss and muscle strength, promotes blood sugar control by reducing insulin resistance among others.

So, if you think intermittent fasting will yield magical, quick results within a couple of weeks, you certainly have to rethink before you undertake this diet plan.

Important to note, during intermittent fasting, you are allowed to have 0 calorie beverages like water, coffee etc. Consumption of coffee even can help to keep hunger at bay as it is a strong appetite suppressant.
