During a chat with Tamron Hall last week, Stassi Schroeder spoke out publicly for the first time about her firing from "Vanderpump Rules." Soon after, a report from Us Weekly claimed that the reality TV star felt ambushed by the journalist.

Tamron is now speaking out about that "fair and open conversation," while also expressing one regret.

"The other day I was told that there was a report that Stassi felt 'unprepared' and that it was 'awkward.' Even that I had gone rogue whatever that means," Tamron said on her eponymous talk show on Sept. 22. "Let me just be open because I'm expecting everybody who's participating in this show today, I want them to be open, so I have to do the same. It's why I wanted this show to be honest with you."

"So I'm going to take you behind the scenes of TV," she continued. "Now, I don't tell people the specific questions I'm going to ask them. How they answer, that's up to them. But the topic and everything that we discussed, Stassi knew. She knew the subject matter. She knew what I was going to ask her. Not the questions."

Tamron said that Stassi's team called on the eve of the interview and asked her not to bring up the former Bravo star's past comments about the #MeToo movement, which she called a "witch hunt." Stassi also criticized women for coming forward.

Tamron now regrets that she agreed to shy away from that line of questioning.

"It hit me to my gut that I didn't ask her," Tamron said. "But again, I want to be honest with you. Given that she was five months pregnant, the issue of race was hard enough for her and for me and it was a lot to unpack, including that Nazi comment, so I said we were not going to go down that road but we would have this difficult conversation that we all should have to provide a better platform for our children."

Stassi was one of four "Vanderpump Rules" cast members notoriously fired in June for past racist actions. For months, she remained silent on the matter.Hence, her chat with Tamron was widely promoted.

"Stassi felt totally unprepared for the interview," a source toldUs Weekly."She wasn't in a good mood afterward and felt like she was put on the spot. She has built her brand on being candid and funny, and she feels afraid to make any wrong comments or jokes and having them come across negatively, which, in turn, made the interview awkward."

"She doesn't want to make a wrong move or say anything that can be taken out of context because she really has been taking time to work on herself," the source said. "She felt somewhat caught off guard in how the interview went down because she really has been doing her best to learn, educate herself and be the best version of herself that she can be."

A second source added, "Producers laid the segments out for Stassi and her team, and everything was all set. And then, to everyone's surprise,Tamronwent rogue and took the interview in a completely different direction."

Jesse Metcalfe Reveals How Much Weight Hes Lost Since Dancing With the Stars Began – Us Weekly

Posted: September 23, 2020 at 4:50 pm

A new fitness regimen! Although season 29 of Dancing With the Stars is just getting started, Jesse Metcalfe has already seen insane changes in his body, he told Us Weekly on Tuesday, September 22, after his week two performance.

Ive lost 8 pounds since I started rehearsing. Im getting super lean, the Chesapeake Shores star, 41, said. I feel like my shoulders are kind of going back and its improving my posture overall and I love it. Its great.

During Tuesdays episode, Metcalfe and his partner, Sharna Burgess, performed a Foxtrot to Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, earning a score of 20 out of 30 from the judges. The pair were thrilled with the results, especially since the song had significance.

This was a song that meant something to Jesse. It was about a lot of the things that hes had to sacrifice and some of those things are relationships to be able to be great at what he does and follow his dreams, the Australia native, 35, explained. So, we decided together that I would represent one of those relationships that he had to walk away from. So those face holds and when he finally walked away from me at the end, it was that moment of Im sorry, I have to go, and I have to do this.

She noted that the chemistry is amazing between the two, but hes also a great actor. Hes easy to play off and be in that moment with and know that theres truth in it too. It just brings everything together beautifully and thats what makes dance so awesome.

The former Desperate Housewives star also noted that there were a lot of layers to how he was feeling during the routine.

Somehow it all comes together on performance night and theres just a lot of subtext that you can read into while watching the dance, he said. You cant necessarily create chemistry, you know? Its either there [or its not].

After the premiere episode, the duo detailed how they created that chemistry upon meeting.

Once you get put in that stressful situation and you have to come together quickly, you go through all of those emotions that triumph and adversity, that getting to know each other, you just got to push it in. There is no time to take it slow, the professional dancer told Us exclusively at the time. So, we got to know each other! We didnt necessarily argue. We had moments of understanding.

The actor also noted that after having some deep chats and minor disagreements, they really created a tight connection.

Whats unbelievable is that dancing with someone is a form of therapy. They should make married couples that are having issues in their marriage, take dance classes together, the Passions alum said. I feel like that would resolve a lot of issues and bring the couples closer.

Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.

How and When Will We Know that a COVID-19 Vaccine Is Safe and Effective? – GovExec.com

Posted: September 23, 2020 at 4:50 pm

With COVID-19 vaccines currently in the final phase of study, youve probably been wondering how the FDA will decide if a vaccine is safe and effective.

Based on the status of the Phase 3 trials currently underway, it is unlikely that the results of these trials will be available before November. But it is likely that not just one but several of the competing COVID-19 vaccines will be shown to be safe and effective by the end of 2020.

I am a scientist and infectious diseases specialist at the University of Virginia, where I care for patients with COVID-19 and conduct research on the pandemic. I am also a member of the World Health Organization Expert Group on COVID-19 Vaccine Prioritization.

What is the status of COVID-19 vaccines in human clinical trials?

Phase 3 studies are underway for the Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines and the Oxford/AstraZeneca viral vector vaccine.

Each of these vaccines uses the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein, which the virus uses to infect cells, to trigger the immune system to generate protective antibodies and a cellular immune response to the virus. Protective antibodies act by preventing the spike glycoprotein from attaching the virus to human cells, thereby neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19.

In the case of Modernas nucleic acid vaccine, the messenger RNA encoding the spike glycoprotein is encased in a fat droplet called a liposome to protect the mRNA from degradation and enable it to enter cells. Once these instructions are inside the cells, the mRNA is read by the human cell machinery and made into many spike proteins so that the immune system can respond and begin producing antibodies against this coronavirus.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca uses a different strategy to activate an immune response. Here an adenovirus found in chimpanzees shuttles the instructions for manufacturing the spike glycoprotein into cells.

Phase 1 and 2 studies by pharmaceutical companies Janssen and Merck also use viral vectors similar to the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, while vaccines by Novavax and GSK-Sanofi use the actual spike protein itself.

Animal tests show the vaccines provide protection from coronavirus infection

Studies in animal models of COVID-19 provide convincing evidence that vaccination with the spike glycoprotein will protect from COVID-19. Experiments have show that when the immune system is shown the spike protein which alone cannot trigger disease the immune system will generate an antibody response that protects from infection with SARS-CoV-2.

In studies in hamsters an adenovirus viral vector the approach used by Oxford/AstraZeneca, for example was used to immunize with the Spike glycoprotein. When the hamsters were infected with SARS-CoV-2 they were protected from pneumonia, weight loss and death.

In nonhuman primates, DNA vaccines which deliver the gene for the spike glycoprotein reduced the amount of virus in the lungs. Animals that produced antibody that prevented virus attachment to human cells were most likely to be protected.

What have the early Phase 1 and 2 studies in humans shown?

Overall, vaccination has triggered a more potent neutralizing antibody response than even that seen in patients recovering from COVID-19.

This has also been the case for Modernas vaccine currently in Phase 3 trials and for vaccines from CanSino Biologics and Oxford/ AstraZeneca.

What side effects have been observed?

Physicians have recorded mild to moderate reactions when the subjects were observed up to 28 days after vaccination. These side effects included mild pain, warmth and tenderness at the site of injection, and fever, fatigue, joint and muscle pain.

But Phase 1 and 2 studies are by small by design, with just hundreds of participants. So these trials will not be large enough to detect uncommon or rare side effects.

The emphasis on safety as the primary goal was recently demonstrated in the Phase 3 Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine trial where one vaccinated individual developed inflammation of the spinal cord. It isnt clear whether the vaccine caused this reaction it might be a new case of multiple sclerosis unrelated to the vaccine but the Phase 3 trial was halted in the U.S. until more is known.

How is the FDA ensuring that a vaccine will be safe yet quickly produced?

The FDA has issued guidance for industry on the steps required for developing and ultimately licensing vaccines to prevent COVID-19 these are the same rigorous safety standards required for all vaccines.

There are, however, ways to speed the process of approval that are centered on platform technology. What this means is that if a vaccine is using an approach such as an adenovirus that has previously been shown to be safe, it may be possible for a company to use previously collected data on toxicity and pharmacokinetics to fast-track clinical trial approval.

While speed and safety may appear conflicting goals, it is also encouraging to note that the rival vaccine manufacturers have jointly pledged not to bow to any political pressures to rush vaccine approval, but to maintain the most rigorous safety standards.

How protective does a vaccine need be to receive FDA approval?

The FDA has set the bar for the primary endpoint of a Phase 3 trial of 50% protection for approval of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Protection is defined as protection from symptomatic COVID-19 infection, defined as laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection plus symptoms such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.

This means that an effective vaccine is considered one that will reduce the number of infections in vaccine recipients by half. This is the minimal protection that is anticipated to be clinically useful. That is, in part, because lower levels of efficacy could paradoxically increase COVID-19 infections if it leads vaccinated people to decrease mask wearing or social distancing because they think they are completely protected.

Since a vaccine might be more effective at preventing severe COVID-19, the FDA instructs that protection from severe COVID-19 should be a secondary endpoint.

How many people have to be vaccinated to know if a vaccine works in Phase 3?

The current Phase 3 trials are enrolling 30,000-40,000 subjects. Most of these participants will receive the vaccine and some a placebo.

When, exactly, the results of Phase 3 studies will be released depends in large part on the rate of infection in the placebo recipients. The way that these vaccine studies work is that they test if naturally acquired new coronavirus infections are lower in the group that received the vaccine compared with the group receiving the placebo.

So while it is good news that COVID-19 infections have dropped recently in the U.S. from 70,000 to 40,000 cases per day, this drop in new infections may slow the vaccine studies.

Will Emergency Use Authorization fast-track vaccine?

In an emergency such as we are faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, with approximately 700 new deaths and 40,000 new cases per day right now, the FDA is authorized to allow the use of unapproved products for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. That includes a vaccine.

The standard approval process for vaccines can require more than one year of observation after vaccination. If the short-term safety is good and the vaccine works to prevent COVID-19, then the vaccine should be approved for use under an Emergency Use Authorization while it is still being studied.

Under Emergency Use Authorization, the FDA will continue to collect information from the companies producing the vaccines for benefit and harm, including surveillance for vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease or other potentially rare complications that might be observed in only one in a million.

What should we expect in terms of approvals?

I expect that the FDA will approve several vaccines by the end of 2020 under its Emergency Use Authorization authority so that vaccination can begin immediately, starting with high-risk groups including first responders, health care personnel, and the elderly and those with preexisting medical conditions.

This will be followed rapidly with roll-out of vaccination to the population at large, while all of the time the FDA and vaccine manufacturers will continue to monitor for side effects and work to improve upon these first vaccines. This process is expected to take months.

It may not be life back to normal next year, but all signs point to a healthier 2021.

Brits reveal why they want to lose weight from getting better sleep to reducing coronavirus risk – The Sun

Posted: September 23, 2020 at 4:50 pm

BRITS have revealed their motivations for wanting to get in shape including getting a good nights sleep, keeping up with the kids and reducing their chances of getting Covid-19.

Research of 2,000 adults found two thirds are eager to improve their physical health so they can get more out of life.

1

And four in 10 adults believe a healthier lifestyle could limit the chances of them developing underlying health conditions.

But a quarter hope changes to how they live will mean they are less at risk of catching Covid-19.

However, the study, commissioned by Bupa Health Clinics to mark the launch of its new health assessments, found half of those polled have 'always' struggled to motivate themselves.

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan, medical director, said: The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown our health and wellbeing into the spotlight, and its no surprise that people are looking to make long-term positive changes to their overall lifestyle.

Despite being motivated, it can still be hard to actually take the steps towards making these changes.

Everyones health and wellbeing is unique and what works for one person doesnt necessarily work for another, so its important to find what works for you help and advice is available for those who need it.

The study also found a quarter of adults have attempted a plan of some sort such as a diet or exercise regime in the past three months.

And of the 60 per cent whove ever attempted a new regime, 79 per cent admitted they found it hard to stick to it.

A lack of drive (47 per cent), losing interest (34 per cent) and not seeing the results quickly enough (31 per cent) were among the reasons why they found it tricky.

But 45 per cent also felt overwhelmed by the information available about improving health.

It also emerged 41 per cent tend to go online for information, 29 per cent turn to their doctor and 18 per cent ask their friends and worryingly, 16 per cent will simply rely on guesswork.

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan added: When it comes to making these changes, knowing where to get the right information can be difficult and sometimes overwhelming, which is completely understandable.

In our health clinics, we see many people who take up fad diets or extreme exercise programmes that are difficult to stick to.

"We want to encourage people to adopt a healthier approach that they can maintain all year round with ongoing support and advice of our lifestyle and health advisors.

Researchers also found more than half of adults are currently struggling with their mental health with 55 per cent looking for ways to improve their mental wellbeing.

And over the last six months, 36 per cent of those polled via OnePoll said their mental health has worsened, with 85 per cent taking steps to address this aspect of their health.

Exercise (46 per cent), eating healthily (40 per cent) and spending time with family (39 per cent) are the most popular ways for looking after their mental health

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan said Looking after our mental health is equally as important as our physical health, so we need to take steps to ensure were looking after both.

Usually these come hand in hand, for example if youre eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly you tend to feel better mentally.

While theres been a lot of talk about the quarantine 15, otherwise known as the extra pounds easily packed on while stuck at home, Wendy Williams just opened up about the 25-pound impact the pandemic has had on her as in 25 pounds lost.

On Monday, the 56-year-old kicked off season 12 of her eponymous talk show and revealed that, even though she didnt plan on it, lockdown left her with a new, leaner look.

Watch TODAY All Day! Get the best news, information and inspiration from TODAY, all day long.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

Ive lost 25 pounds look! she told her audience. And I didnt do it on purpose. Its just that food became disgusting to me.

According to Williams, she started cutting back and dropping pounds after a period of overindulgence.

I was cooking at first and it was all good, I was shoveling stuff in my mouth, she said. Everything from hot dogs to lobster, you know, king crab legs all that stuff.

Fans who follow her on Instagram got a glimpse of many of those meals, but Williams got tired of seeing her own fully loaded plates.

Then it became, Im done with food, she recalled.

Or at least she was done with the frequent hot dogs and lobster dinners for a while and she doesnt even miss them, since losing weight led her to gain a new appreciation for her waistline.

The radio talent-turned-TV talker said that she wasnt even aware she was shedding pounds at all until she had to step on a scale before a recent routine colonoscopy.

(The doctor) told me the weight, and I was like, I havent weighed this little since high school! she raved. Uh-huh!

Williams, who in January confirmed her divorce from her second husband, Kevin Hunter, was finalized, said that she feels really good now, except for one thing.

Im just alone in my romance, she explained to sympathetic groans from the audience. Then, with a look of resilience she added, Oh, well. Dont you worry, because (Mr. Right) might be watching right now.

Dr. Roach: Unexplained weight loss must be investigated – The Detroit News

Posted: September 22, 2020 at 4:02 pm

Keith Roach, To Your Health Published 12:00 a.m. ET Sept. 22, 2020

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a 72-year-old man in good health. I have lost about 12 pounds in the past year, with no explanation. Im 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches tall, and my morning weight has dropped from 166-168 pounds to 154-156 pounds. It is still slowly falling.

I eat well, and Ive exercised an hour every other day for 36 years. Ive had on-and-off atrial fibrillation for 14 years, with two ablations, but since I began flecainide two years ago, no more episodes. I also take 10 mg simvastatin and 1,000 mg vitamin D3 daily.

My doctor did bloodwork and ordered a full CT scan, but found nothing. Since the pandemic began, Ive been walking 3 miles every other day, alternating with my days on the stationary bike at home. The doctor thinks I may be burning more calories than Im eating, but I doubt it.

Dr. Keith Roach(Photo: Reed Brennan)

Would you have any ideas? I was a skinny child, and I weighed just 126 pounds or so into my mid-20s, until I got married. So maybe Im just returning to the high basal metabolism of my youth.

D.S.

Dear D.S.: Unexplained weight loss should be taken seriously, especially in an older person. Getting bloodwork and a CT scan is a reasonable start, but there are some additional issues that should be considered.

Your doctor is right to think about energy intake as well as energy expenditure. The first to do is to see how many calories you are eating. A careful food diary can accomplish this. People with major depression and other neurologic and psychiatric illnesses sometimes eat very little, and these should be carefully explored.

Sometimes, the body cannot absorb calories properly. Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease are the most common, but there are others. The body may lose calories; diabetes causes sugar to come out through the urine. Some infections can cause profound weight loss, such as tuberculosis consumption is an old name for this disease HIV, viral hepatitis and parasites.

Your metabolism might indeed be high, but that is not a normal condition of aging. Overactive thyroid disease is a condition your doctor has probably already looked for.

Medications are an uncommon cause of weight loss. Flecainide has been reported to cause weight loss in 1% to 3% of users. Some supplements can cause weight loss, too.

Cancer leaps to the mind for many when they hear about weight loss. Colon cancer and prostate cancer should be considered in any 72-year-old man, but especially with weight loss. The CT scan, if it included chest, abdomen and pelvis, should have found lung, kidney or pancreatic cancers, which all are frequently associated with weight loss.

Since your weight loss continues, its time for a more thorough re-evaluation. Your youthful basal metabolism probably hasnt just returned.

Dear Dr. Roach: I am a small-boned 80-year-old woman who was just advised to begin osteoporosis treatments. At age 80, will the medication actually slow down my bone loss, or am I too old to see any better results from next years bone density test? Im very active, ride an exercise bike 3 miles and walk a treadmill 1 mile at least five days a week. I also take four daily tablets of Citracal+D3 tablets.

S.M.

Dear S.M.: You are not too old to benefit from treatment of osteoporosis. Plus, the exercise you do will certainly continue to help your bones and the rest of you.

Bone density changes slowly. It may take two years to be sure of the benefits, but that doesnt mean you arent getting benefits as soon as you start the medicine.

Eating Healthy Is More Important Than Weight Loss for Heart Health – Healthline

Posted: September 22, 2020 at 4:02 pm

If you are overweight, you dont necessarily have to lose weight in order to live longer.

But you probably need to change your diet.

Research has shown that people with high body mass index (BMI) are at significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality than those who have lower BMI.

High BMI accounts for more than 4 million deaths annually, with more than two-thirds of those deaths due to cardiovascular disease.

This data is considered crucial since 42 percent of people in the United States are clinically obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

However, a new study led by Dr. Karl Michalsson, a researcher at Uppsala University in Sweden, concludes that people classified as obese can reduce mortality risk to the same level as people with lower BMI by switching to a healthier, Mediterranean-style diet.

The Mediterranean diet favors nutrient-dense foods such as fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts, unrefined or high-fiber grains, fish, and olive oil over red meat and processed foods.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, tracked 79,003 Swedish adults with a mean baseline age of 61 for 21 years. During the study period, 30,389 people died.

Researchers found that overweight individuals who best complied with a Mediterranean diet were the least likely to die.

In fact, obese individuals with the healthiest diets were no more likely to die than those people with moderate weight and healthy diets.

Individuals with a normal BMI but unhealthy diets also had a higher mortality rate than those with moderate weight who had healthier, Mediterranean-style diets.

Diet was found to be such a strong predictor of mortality risk that the older people in the study who had moderate weight but an unhealthy diet were reported by researchers as the most likely to die during the study period even more than people with obesity who ate poorly.

My view is that it is advisable not to make recommendations based on a single study, even if it is my own, but our results indicate that eating healthy is beneficial independent of the relative body weight, at least in later years of life, Michalsson told Healthline.

While cardiovascular mortality associated with high BMI was reduced by adherence to a Mediterranean diet, it was not eliminated, researchers said.

Moreover, lower BMI did not counter the elevated cardiovascular mortality associated with an unhealthier diet.

These results indicate that adherence to healthy diets such as a Mediterranean-like diet may be a more appropriate focus than avoidance of obesity for the prevention of overall mortality, the study concluded. Nonetheless, a healthy diet may not completely counter higher [cardiovascular] mortality related with obesity.

Dr. Dexter Shurney, the chief medical officer and president of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, told Healthline that the study findings square with the experience of treating people with type 2 diabetes, who can reverse their condition by adopting a healthier diet even without losing weight.

The same has been shown to be true of people with obesity who have received bariatric surgery, he said.

Even if you are not reaching your weight loss goals, following a healthy diet provides numerous other invaluable benefits to your entire body, Bansari Acharya, a registered dietitian and nutritionist at foodlove.com, told Healthline. A healthy diet consists of a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, nuts, adequate water, legumes, lentils, omega-3 fatty acids, lean protein, and low in saturated fats, trans fats, and processed foods.

Especially for cardiovascular health, the components in fruits and vegetables, most importantly, fiber and B vitamins, aid in healthy arteries by helping to ease cholesterol, she added. Additionally, obtaining an adequate amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which is found in walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and fatty fish, is crucial for cardiovascular health.

Shurney said that people who switch to a Mediterranean-style diet almost inevitably will lose weight.

If you eat more calorie-dense foods whole potatoes rather than potato chips, for example the weight loss will almost take care of itself, he said. You can actually eat more and weigh less.

Even if you dont shed the pounds, At the end of the day, the amount of weight you lose should not be the only indicator of how healthy your body is at a cellular level, said Acharya.

You could be losing weight through unhealthy means such as by severely restricting your calories, which may deplete you from essential nutrients, further harming your cardiovascular health even while losing weight, she said. However, when you incorporate healthy, nutritious, and wholesome foods in your diet, at a cellular level they are helping you regenerate healthy cells and fight off or prevent damage to existing cells.
