There is not yet solid evidence as to why that might be the case, but Professor Francesco Rubino, a consultant bariatric surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, has a theory: very-low calorie diets - as few as 800 kcals per day - whether in soups, shakes or whole food, have a similar effect on the body as a gastric bypass.

He explains that bariatric surgery is not just effective by reducing the size of the stomach, it also disrupts the bodys attempts to make you regain the weight by increasing hunger and decreasing fullness. This happens because the part of your gut responsible for creating these signals is bypassed surgically: it is no longer stimulated, and so stops telling your brain that you are hungry.

With very-low calorie diets, Rubino believes the same thing is happening: the gut is not being constantly stimulated by food passing through, and in its resting state does not create feelings of hunger.

It can happen either with surgery, or a diet that is so low in food intake that it brings that level of gut exposure to stimulus as close as possible to zero, he says.

However, he advises a note of caution, given there are not yet any studies into the potential long-term effects of these diets.

Dr Michael Mosley, the BBC broadcaster and creator of the 5:2 Diet, believes there might be another mechanism at work which explains how liquid diets reduce hunger: ketosis, or when the body uses fat, not sugar, for fuel. He thinks we have evolved to feel less hungry when this is happening: in times of food shortage, it would have been fatal for ancient humans to be too distracted by hunger, he says.

Dr Mosley himself sells an 800 calorie-a-day diet plan, where followers have up to two shakes a day and one light meal. He says that eating this way for eight to 10 weeks can be markedly effective for controlling diabetes and much more so than conventional steady dieting.

This is because rapid dieting encourages the body to first use stores of fat in the liver and pancreas crucial for type 2 diabetes patients where excess fat around the pancreas prevents it from working properly and producing insulin.

Most of these patients have 30 to 35 per cent liver fat - theyre like foie gras geese, he says. But in a few weeks [of rapid dieting], it drains out and is reduced to 3 per cent.

He points to a 2018 study, which compared the effects of a meal replacement programme of around 800 calories a day to those using traditional NHS weight loss programmes. Those who followed the low calorie diet were 10.7kg lighter a year later, three times more than in the other group. They also managed much better reductions in their risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

However, these diets need to be followed with caution. They are most suitable for those who have a lot to lose already, and would be a no-go for anyone with a history of eating disorders.

Different brands of soups and shakes on the market also differ widely in the nutrition they provide. One with high levels of carbohydrates and low fat and protein might be a disaster for your metabolism, says Pearson.

With a low-calorie, low-protein diet, you eat salad and fruit and dont have enough protein, so the body will lose muscle, she says. Since muscle uses more energy at rest than other tissues in the body, this could mean that your metabolism will slow down and you will put weight back on so fast. Instead, look for something with adequate protein and fats, as well as vitamins and minerals.

There may also be some short-term side effects which could be frustrating, like headaches and constipation. Dr Mosley recommends that drinking plenty of water may help with these effects.

There is also the great big elephant in the room: what happens when the 12-week programme is over, and you have to go back to eating normal, solid food?

After a lifetime of feeling uncomfortable in her body, Mary Carney wanted to do something about her weight and health. At 71, she was upset by how she looked and wanted to have more energy. But she wasnt quite sure how to start.

My clothes looked horrible. I didnt look good in them, Carney, now 78, of Summerville, South Carolina, told TODAY. I didnt like the way I looked or the way I felt.

While Carney lost about 60 pounds in her early 70s, she recently injured herself and regained some of that weight. On top of moving less, she often ate mindlessly in front of the TV and would snack on something sugary, causing the weight to creep back.

When she noticed that she couldnt keep up with her grandchildren, she knew exactly what she had to do to lose weight and enjoy her time with her 6-year-old twin grandsons Grayson and Gunner.

Anyone who has grandchildren wants to be able to play with them, she said. I want to feel better about myself and be able to play with my grandchildren.

So she recommitted to the 21 Day Fix. Now, she especially likes that she has containers for the proper portions for meals.

Calabrese describes what food to put in the containers so you dont overeat, she said. My energy now, I just cant believe it. I just started back.

Calabrese featured Carneys story in her recent book Lose Weight Like Crazy Even if You Have a Crazy Life. Carney believes that shes proof that anyone at any age can lose weight and improve their health.

Being overweight kept Carney from enjoying her time with her family.

When your grandchildren come up to you and ask, Can you please get up? Can we take a walk? When you are heavier, you are sluggish and you just want to sit and color, she said. That woke me up again. I did not have the energy or the stamina.

After losing the weight, she's able to be more active with Gunner and Grayson.

It is just beautiful, she said.

She planned it out so thoroughly, Carney said. Its a great thing for anybody of any age.

Carney wanted to lose weight so she could enjoy her life and be active with her family. Being committed to her health goals led to her success.

Researchers know that obesity is bad for your health.Obesity is associated with increased risks of cancers of the esophagus, breast (postmenopausal), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), colon and rectum, kidney, pancreas, thyroid, gallbladder, and possibly other cancer types. Obese people are also at a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and numerous other chronic diseases.

We now have another compelling reason to slim down. Being obese makes you more susceptible to a coronavirus infection and it also makes it much harder to recover from it. On the July 31 segment of Real Time With Bill Maher on HBO, host Bill Maher quoted Health Officials in Huntington, New York, who told the entire town of 200,000 to go on a diet, because as the head of the program put it, with COVID-19 youre twice as likely to have a poor outcome if you are obese. Actually, its worse than that. Public Health England found that people with a body mass index of 35-40 have a 40% greater risk of dying from COVID and over 40, its a 90% greater risk. When you're reading for a smoothie, mix with 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk and either 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or 1 scoop of protein powder. This works well as a snack, but can even be filling enough for a meal!

Whole-grain carbohydrates are loaded with dietary fiber, which is the best food you can have for weight loss. Swapping out your white, refined carbohydrates for whole-grain carbohydrates and complex carbs is actually a lot easier than you think. Frying and sauteeing are easy ways to cook dinner, but if you're not careful, you can easily load it up with lots of oil, which piles on the calories. Water is good to drink, but it can get boring pretty quickly. Find a few seltzers you love that can change up your usual water-drinking routine. Plus, by choosing flavored seltzer, you can easily replace your sugary sodas and other beverages that are full of empty calories.

Portioning out your food doesn't mean restricting your food! It means properly portioning out the right amount of food for each meal. For a normal lunch of dinner plate, it's good to have at least 4 to 5 oz. of protein, 1-2 cups of vegetables, 1/2 cup (or 1 serving) of a complex carb, and a serving of healthy fats. This plate is full and filling, and you won't feel like you're missing out.

Have a sweet tooth? You don't have to eliminate your favorite sweets completely. Just like portioning out your food, plan your dessert for the day and portion it correctly. If you love ice cream, have a scoop of ice cream. Dark chocolate? Enjoy a serving of it. Are you more of a brownie person? Enjoy one warmed up with a dollop of whipped cream. It will satisfy your sweet craving and you won't overdo it on the calories.

On what was a particularly difficult day, laden with disappointment and marked by exhaustion from the cumulative weight of bearing sorrow on behalf of friends, relatives and colleagues experiencing myriad grief, illness, job loss, restlessness and anxiety, the mail arrived. Thank you, U.S. Postal Service!

Our mail carrier had brought us a small package, hand addressed to me by a friend many states away. The joy of its arrival was enhanced by the fact that it was totally unexpected and any sign of human connection in the age of the pandemic is a reason to be glad.

I have thought a lot over these five months about the importance of simple joys, acts of human kindness, the discipline of gratitude, occasions for celebration and reasons for hope.

I know of no one in the entire world unaffected by the global pandemic. I have lost friends and neighbors to COVID-19. I have consoled those who mourn, and while practicing physical distance is painfully awkward and frustrating on such occasions, genuine empathy knows no bounds. I have encouraged those newly unemployed or underemployed and reminded my colleagues to be gentle with themselves and their families.

Those fortunate to have employment and the luxury of remaining safely at home know that Zoom fatigue is real. I hold a growing number of people, intentions and consolations in my daily prayer. My priest friends tell me the most difficult part of the pandemic for them is the restriction inhibiting sacramental and pastoral ministry, anointing the sick, consoling the brokenhearted, burying the dead.

We are in a collective mourning, a collective chronic state of physical and mental exhaustion, a permanent state of low-grade depression, exacerbated by political and theological divisions. Sorrow and anxiety, disappointment, our own or on behalf of those we love, is always nearby. The academic year is just beginning. Procedures and protocols for safety vary wildly, and the only certainty is that rules are subject to revision at a moments notice.

My beautiful friend, Mary Ann Wasil, died young of breast cancer years before the pandemic, but not before living a remarkably full and joyful life fiercely promoting justice and mercy, and exuding faith and hope. She taught me early in our friendship how important celebration is, no matter what is happening in the world or in our lives. She lived by the conviction that we must, celebrate what is right in order to find the strength to fix what is wrong.

Zoom fatigue is real, but so is the moment of joy when the beautiful face of the person we love is suddenly in view. Disappointment and loss are near constants, but so are daily acts of compassion and encouragement and solidarity. Blessings are everywhere, perhaps now appreciated with greater conscientiousness against the backdrop of so much loss and deprivation.

I opened the package to reveal a bright pink handmade mask with daisies, the symbol of the breast health advocacy nonprofit Mary Ann founded when she learned of her diagnosis. In the middle is the single word HOPE, a reminder of another maxim she taught me: Hope lives. The gift is from a mutual friend of Mary Anns, and I cherish it.

Symbols are integral to the Catholic imagination. The mask is the symbol both of the pandemic and our commitment to the common good, to love and care for others. This mask, a beautiful gift, has lifted my spirits, reminded me to celebrate, to be grateful, to be surprised by joy and beauty and friendship. It is above all a symbol of mercy.

Cycling can be a hugely enjoyable form of cardio for people who want to lose weight, improve their personal fitness, or just generally be more active in their lifestyle and contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to be thin as a beanpole to do it.

Avid cyclist Leonard Lee makes YouTube content for people who share his enthusiasm, regardless of age or body type. In a recent video, he broke down some of the things he has learned while cycling as a bigger person, including practical obstacles that often arise, as well as the pervasive gatekeeping and fat-shaming that can occur in the cycling world.

"As a self-confessed fat cyclist myself, I can tell you that being heavy adds all kinds of challenges when getting on a bike," he says. "Probably the single main challenge faced by fat cyclists is that being heavy makes cycling hard work, especially when the road starts to go uphill. This is obviously down to the power-to-weight ratio... I'll be the first to admit, I'm one of the slowest climbers I know. But then that kind of makes sense, because I'm one of the heaviest climbers I know. Then again, I can climb."

It stands to reason, he explains, that heavy cyclists must have a high power output, otherwise they'd never make it up those inclines at all. But as they are carrying more weight, "much of that power is effectively lost." He adds that even minor weight loss can help to shift that power-to-weight ratio in a cyclist's favor, resulting in an increased speed both on climbs and flats.

A related issue that heavier cyclists should pay extra attention to, says Leonard, is their knees. "Because climbing is that much harder for us, we tend to put more pressure through our knees," he explains. "This can be improved through some degree through a good bike fit, and ensuring the saddle height and position are correct. Riding in lower gears will also prevent too much pressure being put through your knees."

Finding the right bike for you to begin with can help you avoid some of these problems, but Leonard points out that this in itself is often an obstacle. "Many frames, components and wheels have manufacturers' recommended weight limits," he says. "Never be tempted to exceed that limit, if you do, that item could fail. At best, you'll void warranty. At worst, you could be involved in a nasty accident." Similarly, finding cycling wear that has been designed to be both functional and flattering in bigger sizes can be a challenge although Leonard says whether you want to wear proper biking kit or not is entirely down to personal choice.

One of the most frustrating and pervasive negative aspects to being a "fat cyclist" is the unsolicited health and dietary advice from strangers, some of which is well-meant, while other times is downright insulting. "Many people see an overweight person, and for one reason or another, think that they have no idea why they're fat," says Leonard. "Believe me, we know all too well how we got here."

For the most part, however, Leonard's enthusiasm for cycling more than compensates for some of the downsides. "Cycling in general has so many benefits that being overweight shouldn't be a reason to not get on the bike," he says. "Nothing in life is without its own unique challenges and obstacles. You can either see these obstacles and let them end your journey right there, or you can be excited about the possibilities that lay beyond."

Fast forward six months, and shes dabbled in virtual races and socially-distanced staggered starts, but says that while organizers have done a great job of balancing safety with an atmosphere of competition,its still not the same as toeing the line.

Back in March, changes due to the coronavirus outbreak hit the running community (and the entire world) fast. Health officials ordered lockdowns and social distancing, gyms closed, and races were cancelled. Now, as states continue to re-open safely while keeping their infection and death numbers down, the changes are ongoing, but people are still getting out to exercise.

One thing we noticed right away was how many people were still moving, despite not having races, said Magda Boulet, former U.S. Olympian, and Vice President of R&D at GU Energy Labs who runs 60-mile weeks on her home trails around Berkeley, California. I saw families outside together and people trying to stay active, closer to home. I started to call this the movement movement.

Boulets observation is not off. The health and fitness tracking brand FitBit reported greater levels of activity in June versus the beginning of the pandemic in April. Even without races and events for the rest of the year, runners are still running, and many formerly non-runners have since taken up the sport. In May, Garmin reported a similar trend, publishing data that shows worldwide activities were up by 24 percent.

More people running is a good thing overall, but without races and large events that sports nutrition brands like GU rely on as a key component to their businesses, everyone in the running community has had to adaptespecially race organizers.

Tim Cole, a previous race director for the Oakland Marathon, was overseeing brand partnerships at Mascot Sports when shutdowns began spreading like wildfire. We got the sense pretty early that this wasnt going to be a short pause, said Cole. Wanting to be proactive, we canceled races and offered free deferrals, trying to not leave racers in limbo. The entire events community started thinking virtual almost overnight.

Coles former colleagues at the Oakland Marathon initially postponed the race (typically run the last weekend in March), but were slow to offer a virtual alternative. At the time it was a balancing act. Virtual racing doesnt have the same participation as live events, so the decision wasnt easy for a lot of these races, said Cole. But it didnt take long for virtual races to gain real traction. People still want a sense of belonging, whether thats a virtual marathon or something totally new.

For many runners, virtual races filled an important role while traditional races were off the table. Participating in virtual events has been a rewarding way to stay connected with the community and run with greater purpose, said Tim Tollefson, professional runner for Hoka One One. During the final few miles of a virtual marathon I did, knowing others were out suffering at the same moment, helped to suppress negative thoughts that can lead to a DNF or lower performance.

Other than a handful of holdouts, most race directors followed suit, moving from analog to digital. Nutrition brands, recognizing that the old model of putting an emphasis on events and aid stations wouldnt be in the cards for a while, hopped on-board.

Many race directors have looked to create something similar online, said Boulet, and were trying to meet them there, supporting virtual races by sending goodie bags to racers. Were trying to give racers a similar experience, or at least as close as it gets.

For organizers and sponsors alike, the partnership between New York Road Runners and Strava is a north star, because it was successfully running virtual races with good participation before the coronavirus outbreak hit.

With races canceled and running stores closing so fast, we had to shift online, quickly testing ways to support athletes on platforms like Zwift and Strava, said Elliot Freeman, Vice President at Skratch Labs, But entering this scene has been a learning process. We had to do our homework as fast as we could.

Some nutrition brands made educated guesses that turned out to be home runs. We didnt know what was coming, but we took an early guess that at-home workouts and virtual events were the future, so we leaned in, explained Mike Keown, CEO of Honey Stinger. To date, Honey Stinger has led the way on virtual event sponsorship, participating in more than 30 online races.

Many of our event partners got creative on how to build community through online events and we did our best to support, said Keown. One of our marquis partnerships is with Spartan, and theyve done a fantastic job with virtual races. Honey Stinger also worked with their athletes to encourage online racing.

For example, Mario Mendoza set a new 100K treadmill world record and Courtney Dauwalter ran 100 miles around her neighborhood, to simulate an ultra. Choosing to run that far on a treadmill was definitely influenced by not having races, said Mendoza. It was a way to go after a goal without them. Right now Im looking at some FKTs in the mountainsand I suppose if we still cant race in the winter, Ill consider another treadmill distance, but hopefully I dont have to, he joked.

It feels a bit different using your house as an aid station, added Dauwalter, who has taken part in two 100-mile virtual races during the pandemic. For the Aravaipa 100, I was just running laps around my home trails here in Colorado but was amazed at the sense of community. Thats what Ive really missed with not racing every weekend. Community makes these big efforts much more fun.

For Bend-based amateur Alli Miles, the pandemic has offered a chance to experiment. Along with virtual races, Miles says that this race-less summer has allowed her to try different things with her nutritioneverything from different brands to being more regimented with her eating. I knew I needed to work on nutrition, but with lots of training and no real races, Ive had plenty of opportunities to get it more dialed, she said.

Miles has opened up to new opportunities, saying yes to challenges and training plans she might not have otherwise. Ive pushed mileage and overall training volume to see what my body can handle. Its been a good time to try to find out what is sustainable and what is too much, she added.

To address runners like Miles looking for more education around running nutrition, Skratch Labs started hosting webcasts for all skill levels. Weve seen participation from both ends of the spectrumnew runners just getting started and, surprisingly, pro athletes who are training more, possibly because they dont have to taper for races. This is everyones chance to experiment with new types of training and nutrition. Were trying to offer them some education on ways to fuel the right way, said Freeman.

Representatives from Gatorade Endurance echoed this need for more information during a time in-flux. The team is focusing on practical ways to help athletes stay consistent with training through content like Fit Libs, a series of workouts to inspire at-home activity and Training for Life, a series about the ebbs and flows of an endurance athlete and tips to avoid burnout.

While some brands have prioritized education as a way to serve their community, a few have taken it a step further by giving back. Nuun has provided over 100,000 tablets to front line workers since the beginning of the pandemic and GU Energy Labs has donated care packages to more than 100 medical care facilities.

Forgetting about races entirely, Clif Bar transitioned operations almost overnight to address the looming food scarcity issue. We saw food shortages and saw an immediate need to donate food to people who are serving our communities, said Drew McGowan, the Communications Lead at Clif Bar. Clif sent energy bars to food banks and the healthcare community, then to families and children in need.

The bottom line is that we make food. People needed food right away, especially in places like New York. We couldnt wait two months. We used personal connections our employees had to make it happen quickly. This shifted the focus of the entire company, explained McGowan. We saw a food scarcity issue that was exacerbated with COVID, and we knew we had to act immediately.

Our typical consumers are athletes, adventurers, and anyone who cares about the food they put in their bodies. We go to races, sample products, and focus on fueling athletic endeavors, said McGowan, But for now, were focused on helping people get through this. To date weve donated 14 million bars.

The biggest trend is that no one knows what the future will hold or when races might come back. For now, virtual races, online education, and digital communities are here to stay.

The full impact of canceled races is still to be seen, but we know were in this for a while. I think the shift toward wellness over strict regimens is here to stay said Boulet. After 15 years working at GU with a constant focus on big races, Ive been surprised at the community built online.

For elite amateurs like Diaz and runners like Miles, dabbling in new types of races and routines has become a unique opportunity during the pandemic. Continuing to work remotely with her coach and Idaho Distance Project team, Diaz won the local hill climb and has her eyes set on an FKT attempt later this fall.

Any opportunity to race and push the limits no matter the distance or terrain is exciting right now, said Diaz. Im grateful we have something to look forward to on the weekends, and its fun to compete with teams from all over the country. I guess were all in this together.
