The product made headlines for the implication that you can live on nothingbut Soylent, although nowadays the company is careful to put a disclaimer on all of their products:Soylent is not intended to replace every meal, but it can replace any meal.
Thats the tactic that we take toward meal replacements: that they can be a useful, although not perpetual, replacement for a meal.
Now, weve tried dozens and dozens of these supplements to land on our list of best meal replacements, and while there are plenty of crummy options that are low in protein and low in nutrients some of them are, well, really good.
Our top pick Huel, for example, has 28 vitamins and minerals, a good balance of macronutrients, its not too low in calories, and it even provides Omega-3 fatty acids.
So why cant I just live on this shake alone?

I have seen a study or two on satiety and hunger. They were comparing people eating food and people drinking a smoothie, says New York-based dietitian Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD. They found people who have to chew the food feel fuller after chewing, even if its the same nutrients and calories.
This study was published in Hormone and Metabolic Research in 2007, and it did indeed conclude that hunger hormones like ghrelin were affected differently in solid versus liquid food.(1) It concluded that shakes,
led to differential appetitive responses and should not be viewed as dietary equivalents in older adults.
But, well, its never that hard to find studies with opposing conclusions.Here are three (2)(3)(4) that said meal replacements can safely and effectively produce significant weight loss and may help to manage blood sugar.
This is not medical advice, mind you talk to a physician before starting a new supplement regimen, especially if you have diabetes. The point is, well, research is conflicting with the appetite stuff. What if you dont struggle with your appetite? Or you take a fiber supplement, like psyllium husk, that can boost satiety? Or what if youre not trying to lose weight?

What if your meal replacement is really good?
Not something like Slimfast, which has just 2 grams of protein per serving. Lets say its something like Huel, who we promise did not sponsor this article. Its got a good balance of macros and calories 500 per adjustable serving with 37 grams of protein, 47 grams of carbs and 16 grams of fat Omega-3s, and about 30 percent of the recommended daily intake of 28 vitamins and minerals, including uncommon ones like chromium, choline, chloride.
Youll never make an actual meal with so much of every micronutrient! Why shouldnt I just take this all day, every day?
Ithink that there are some things youre going to miss out on, says Rizzo.There arethings you dont see on the food label that are important, like antioxidants and phytochemicals.Those are plant compounds that have been shown to be really beneficial to heart health and disease risk, things like that.
Wait a minute. Arent macronutrients (protein/carbs/fat) and micronutrients (vitamins/minerals) the only things the government says you need to consume?
Essentially, every single plant-based food has things like antioxidants and phytochemicals and phytonutrients, Rizzo explains.There are thousands of them.The ones we know a lot about are flavonoids, which are usually in the darker colored foods resveratrol is an example thats found in reddish colored foods like grapes and berries that may improve heart health.

There are tons of other phytonutrients, and a really big benefit many can confer is their antioxidant effect: they may help to combat inflammation.
Inflammation comes in two different forms, says Rizzo. Theres acute, which is short term and something your body will naturally repair itself from, like the effect of a workout or a bruise. But then theres long term inflammation, which is associated with obesity and chronic disease.If you have inflammation built up in your body for a long period of time, you have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases, and research has found that people who eat more foods with antioxidants and phytochemicals have a lesser chance of getting these sorts of diseases.
Importantly, antioxidants and phytochemicals are not on any food labels, theyre very hard to measure, and the FDA has not set a recommended daily intake for them.
Youll live without these things youve probably met people who live without any vegetables at all but evidence strongly suggests youll live better with them.

Besides phytonutrients, there are other important components to our food that dont have recommended daily intakes, like digestive enzymes.Proteases, lipases, amylases, these are found in whole foods and help you to better absorb the nutrients you do eat they help you make the most of your calories.
Add to that prebiotic fiber and probiotic bacteria. They may improve the health of the trillions of bacteria that live in your digestive tract, and those bacteria may exert an effect on not only your nutrient absorption, but your immunity, inflammation, and physical performance.

Meal replacement shakes can have their place but,
At least eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables every day. They have links to just about every health benefit under the sun.

New research shows cachexia involuntary weight loss and muscle wasting due to illness is an important, but underrecognized, syndrome in people with lupus. Of the 2,406 people with lupus assessed, more than half (56%) developed cachexia within five years of entering the study. Although most people regained their weight over time, this intermittent cachexia was associated with significantly higher risk for future organ damage compared to those with persistent cachexia or no cachexia.
The researchers found people with the following risk factors were more likely to develop cachexia:
People with continuous cachexia were more likely to develop serious kidney complications, including end stage renal disease. Meanwhile, people who never developed cachexia were less likely to develop cancer, diabetes, and certain types of cardiovascular diseases.
This is a significant study, as cachexia has been well researched in many other inflammatory diseases, but little is known about the syndrome in people with lupus. Cachexia is different than starvation or malnutrition, in that it is not easily reversed by nutrition support or supplementation. Ingredients
OATS
1/2 cup unsweetened plain almond milk (or sub other dairy-free milks, such as coconut, soy, or hemp!)
3/4 Tbsp chia seeds
2 Tbsp natural salted peanut butter or almond butter (creamy or crunchy // or sub other nut or seed butter)
1 Tbsp maple syrup (or sub coconut sugar, organic brown sugar, or stevia to taste)
1/2 cup gluten-free rolled oats (rolled oats are best, vs. steel cut or quick cooking)
TOPPINGS (optional)
Sliced banana, strawberries, or raspberries
Flaxseed meal or additional chia seed
Granola
Instructions
To a mason jar or small bowl with a lid, add almond milk, chia seeds, peanut butter, and maple syrup (or another sweetener) and stir with a spoon to combine. The peanut butter does not need to be completely mixed with the almond milk (doing so leaves swirls of peanut butter to enjoy the next day).
Add oats and stir a few more times. Then press down with a spoon to ensure all oats have been moistened and are immersed in almond milk.
Cover securely with a lid or seal and set in the refrigerator overnight (or for at least 6 hours) to set/soak.

OPTIONAL: You can also heat your oats in the microwave for 45-60 seconds (just ensure theres enough room at the top of your jar to allow for expansion and prevent overflow), or transfer oats to a saucepan and heat over medium heat until warmed through. Add more liquid as needed if oats get too thick/dry.
Overnight oats will keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, though best within the first 12-24 hours in our experience. Not freezer friendly.

71-year-old healthcare worker cycles through weight loss journey – WPVI-TV

OCEAN CITY, N.J. -- The sunny shore of Ocean City, New Jersey, plays host to a bevy of bicyclists cruising down flat streets and boardwalk planks.
71-year-old Marian Mulligan might blend in with the crowd, if not for her Maltese dog, Lilly, that rides in the passenger's basket.
"Unfortunately I've not been able to see (my family) since last Christmas, now," she said. "And to have somebody with me to share the ride has been fun."
Earlier this March, the long-time healthcare worker picked up her bicycle and dropped quite a few pounds in the process. Only a few rides away from 1,000 total miles, she has already lost 30 pounds.
"Being in the medical profession, I know how important it is to stay healthy and stay fit," she said.
Marian has been a certified registered nurse anesthetist for 48 years. Her job was to help run ICUs, fitting breathing tubes with respirators, and much more.
"In bigger hospitals, anesthetists are in the hospitals 24 hours a day, seven days a week," she said. "Anesthetists I think are somewhat a little bit behind the scenes, and I would like to see them be brought to the light and be appreciated."
"I have absolutely loved every minute of the profession I chose for myself," Mulligan said.
Taking a small hiatus for a personal medical procedure, she was ready to get back to work right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Unable to return since, she hopes to pick up more hours in the near future.
But she needed to keep herself healthy for when that time comes.
"That is a strong consideration for not getting the virus, and God forbid you do, you're healthy to fight it," she said.
With her new focus on health and family, Mulligan hopes to inspire others to make positive changes in their lives.
"And I think, y'know, if everybody gets up and gets going, we'll chase the virus," she said. "Chase it away."

In 2018, Mowry announced she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and mastitis, which is inflammation of the breast tissue. Six months after giving birth to Cairo, she gave an update about postpartum life on Instagram.
Still breastfeeding and pumping while working. Has it been easy? No. However, Ive continued to push through #mastitis and working sometimes 16-hour days, she wrote in the caption. Weight-loss is most successful in heart attack survivors when partners participate in the effort to diet plan, according to research provided today at ESC Congress 2020.
Lifestyle improvement after a heart attack is a crucial part of preventing repeat events, said study author Ms. Lotte Verweij, a registered nurse and PhD student, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. Our study shows that when spouses join the effort to change habits, patients have a better chance of becoming healthier particularly when it comes to losing weight.
The RESPONSE-2 trial previously found that heart attack survivors referred to programs for weight reduction, physical activity, and cigarette smoking cessation were more likely to customize behaviors compared to those getting usual care. In both groups, dealing with a partner was linked with higher success in moving bad habits. The most significant enhancements remained in patients who took part in lifestyle programs and coped with a partner.
This follow-up study examined whether partner involvement in way of life programs had an impact on behavior modification. If partners contribute to adopting healthy habits, it could become an important recommendation to avoid recurrent heart attacks, explained Ms. Verweij.
A total of 824 patients were randomly appointed to the intervention group (way of life programs on top of normal care) or control group (normal care alone).
This analysis focused on the 411 patients in the intervention group, who were referred to approximately 3 way of life programmes for weight reduction, physical activity, and smoking cessation depending upon their needs and preferences. Partners might attend totally free and nurses encouraged them to take part. Partner participation was specified as attending a minimum of when.
Nearly half (48%) of partners participated in the way of life interventions. Compared to those without a partner, patients with a participating partner were more than twice as most likely (chances ratio 2.45) to enhance in a minimum of among the three areas (weight loss, exercise, smoking cigarettes cessation) within a year.
When the impact of partners was evaluated on the 3 areas separately, patients with a getting involved partner were most successful in lowering weight compared to clients without a partner (chances ratio 2.71).
Patients with partners who joined the weight loss programme lost more weight compared to patients with a partner who did not join the programme, said Ms. Verweij.
She continued: Couples often have comparable lifestyles and changing habits is difficult when only one person is making the effort. Practical issues come into play, such as grocery shopping, but also psychological challenges, where a supportive partner may help maintain motivation.
Ms. Verweij noted that the research study did not find more improvement in cigarette smoking cessation or physical activity when partners actively took part. These lifestyle issues might be more subject to individual motivation and persistence, but this hypothesis needs more investigation, she said.
Note: Three way of life programmeswere used in their existing format:
1) Weight loss: weekly group sessions with a Weight Watchers coach for one year.
2) Exercise: accelerometer to measure activity and an online coach for personalised feedback for one year (Philips Direct Life).
3) Smoking cessation: inspirational speaking with by telephone by qualified experts from Luchtsignaal for three months plus prescription of nicotine replacement or varenicline therapy as suitable.
