In theory, eating organic food is something most of us would choose to do if given the chance. Organic products contain fewer traces of pesticides, they're better for the environment, and they're usually packed with more nutrients.
But skeptics note that buying organic comes at a much higher cost, and whether or not the benefits of eating organic actually outweigh the hefty grocery bill has been a point of debate for years.
Now, a new study is providing evidence of the benefits of organic eating that may convert the skeptics. Researchers from the environmental organization Friends of the Earth found that eating an organic diet for as little as six days can significantly reduce the amount of pesticide traces in the human body.
The peer-reviewed study published in Environmental Research found that people who ate an exclusively organic diet for six days had a 70% reduction in levels of glyphosate in the body. Glyphosate is a widely-used pesticide in the United States, and while the science about its long-term effects on the human body is still inconclusive, there have been several studies linking it to cancer. In fact, the FDA categorized the weed-killer as "probably carcinogenic to humans" in 2015.
The new study followed four families in different parts of the United States, and measured their levels of glyphosate while they were on their regular non-organic diet, followed by six days of eating an exclusively organic diet. The dramatic reduction in traceable pesticide in their systems has researchers optimistic about the rapid, measurable benefits of an organic diet.
"It's striking that levels of this toxic pesticide dropped so dramatically after less than a week. Given our results and related studies on how an organic diet rapidly reduces pesticide exposure, we could expect to see similar reductions in glyphosate levels in most Americans if they switched to an organic diet," said study co-author Kendra Klein, PhD, senior staff scientist at Friends of the Earth.
In America, the consumption of organic products is on a steady rise. Since 2010, the sales of organic foods has doubled, going from 3.4% of total food sales in the U.S. to 5.6% in 2019.
While almost half of Americans report purchasing organic food at least some of the time, for most, switching to an all-organic diet is still out of reach. And that's because on average, organic food costs about 7.5% more than its non-organic counterpart. To find out more about the benefits and costs of eating an organic diet, read our RD's opinion.

Provided by Eat This, Not That! Woman holding plate of keto foods at a table
Today, diets come and go just like fashion trends. So it's rare that a way of eating gets as embedded into our national psyche as the keto diet did. Since its emergence in the mainstream several decades ago, the famous high-fat, low-carb diet has garnered millions of followers worldwide.
The food industry followed the demand, with more and more keto-friendly options popping up on restaurant menus and even on grocery store shelves.
And now it's official, keto is America's favorite diet. British company Supplement Place recently conducted an analysis of the most popular diet trends based on global Google searches, and found that Americans are more interested in keto than any other diet.
And it isn't just America that's going gaga over this healthful way of eating that's helping people shed the pounds. Keto has been found to be the most popular diet trend worldwide, too.
Other diets with a stronghold in many countries are Weight Watchers, which is the top diet in France and Germany, and Intermittent Fasting, favored in Russia, Italy, and most of Europe.
The ketogenic diet may seem counterintuitive at first, as it advocates the consumption of large amounts of fatty foods like cheeses, eggs, oils, nuts, and yes, even bacon. But the purpose of consuming lots of fat and very few carbs is to bring your body into a state of ketosis.
Ketosis is a state where your body shifts from burning sugar and carbohydrates for energy, and instead starts utilizing stored fat in the body. The fat is broken down into molecules called ketones that are released into your bloodstream and flushed out in your urine.

Cedrina Calder, MD, a preventative medicine doctor based in Nashville, explains that most people in ketosis aim to stay under 20 to 50 grams of net carbs daily, though the specific carb tolerance varies from person to person based on a number of factors, including activity level.
While many followers have reaped great benefits from this diet, Dr. Calder cautions it is one of the more difficult diets to sustain on a long-term basis for an average person. "For the average patient, I advise them to choose a healthy pattern of eating that they can sustain rather than focus on a temporary diet," she says.

COVID-19’s other impact on your workforce: isolation and loneliness – Crain’s Cleveland Business
Posted: August 14, 2020 at 11:45 pm
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted everyone differently. We are all concerned about the virus and the impact it has on the safety of our families, friends and co-workers. Before COVID-19, social isolation and loneliness had been a silent plague in our community. Today, those feelings of loneliness are often compounded by the need to social distance to curtail the rampant spread of the virus. It is very clear that organizations like the YMCA, senior centers, churches and others need to be providing even more opportunities for people throughout our community to connect with others and form impactful relationships.
A recent study by SocialPro found 30% of respondents always or often feel lonelier because of the pandemic. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 35 million people live in a one-person household, which equates to a 16% to 28% jump between 1969 and 2019. In context, many more people are feeling the impacts of loneliness because of loss of family members, layoffs, furloughs and new remote working situations.
While no one is immune to loneliness, some segments of the population are particularly at risk. Of the 76 million baby boomers in the United States, one in four are expected to age alone, which means as many as 19 million seniors could face the impact of physical, mental and emotional health risks associated with isolation. (AARP and the YMCA are collaborating to see what might be done to stem this isolation.)
A 2019 poll of 1,254 young adults found that 27% of millennials report having no close friends, 25% have no "acquaintances," and a staggering 22% have few or no friends. Three in 10 millennials always or often feel lonely, according to a poll by YouGov, a London-based research and analytics company.
Across all generations, nine out of 10 respondents reported increased anxiety as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
What is the impact at work? Gallup found that having a best friend at work leads to better performance. For example, its employee engagement database shows that a mere two out of 10 U.S. employees strongly agree they have a best friend at work. By moving that ratio to six in 10, organizations could realize 36% fewer safety incidents; 7% more engaged customers; and 12% higher profit.
Right now, local organizations like the YMCA, senior centers, churches and other local nonprofits are recognizing the growing need for safe places that allow people to connect. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland offers these ideas:
Exercise and socialize in a supportive, safe environment. Many employers encourage and incentivize their employees to exercise. Exercising 20-30 minutes a day can significantly lower anxiety and boost levels of endorphins and serotonin to the brain.
While exercise can be a solo activity, it can also be a social one. For example, the YMCA of Greater Cleveland's 11 branches offer group exercise inside and outside of their facilities while following strict Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health department regulations. Employees can also work with our instructors to set up a virtual group fitness class with co-workers without leaving home. The Y also offers virtual group programs for weight loss, blood pressure monitoring and more.
Engage in acts of service. Volunteering is an easy way to meet people. While COVID-19 has limited volunteering opportunities, it has not eliminated them. Business Volunteers Unlimited, serving the Greater Cleveland and Akron areas, provides a list of virtual volunteering opportunities in its resource center. Volunteers can also go safely on site at nonprofits to help serve food, assist with gardening or provide support at a blood drive.
We thank our staff and volunteers of Ys across the country who continue to help communities manage through the COVID-19 pandemic. As The New York Times reported about the Y, "2,600 outposts transformed in the first wave of illness into civic centers, caring for the children of emergency medical technicians, doctors and other essential workers when day care centers closed down even housing the homeless, when slipping from view could mean a silent death."
The silent threat to our society stemming from issues of social isolation and loneliness is very real. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is among the nonprofits that stand ready to help you and your family as we all continue to navigate challenges related to COVID-19.
Hilk is president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland.

This type of exercise may increase your risk of catching COVID-19, warn experts – Times of India
Posted: August 14, 2020 at 11:45 pm
With the lockdown phasing out gradually, several gyms and fitness centres are opening up. People are also starting to go out to exercise. While this is a call you should take as per your own personal discretion if you must, do so safely.
Guidelines issued by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for exercising in the times of COVID-19 pandemic also suggest the same. Here are a few tips you should be following:
-Wear a face mask or a face shield.
-Do not share yoga mats or exercise equipment.
-Gymnasiums and common access areas should be properly sanitized and disinfected.
-Wash hands sanitize before and after exercising.
-Utilize outdoor spaces, where there is no crowding or infection risk, as much as possible.
-Maintain social distancing.
-If you have a confirmed or suspected case, avoid exercising outdoors for two weeks, or till symptoms subside.

Finally Levack Can Go Back To The Gym! – WTMM 104.5 The Team – ESPN Radio

The guidelines will finally be issued Monday. It's been tough to figure out what the exact logic has been behind why some businesses have been allowed to open while others haven't. While larger stores have been open all along, malls had to add new filters when they were finally allowed to open. Restaurants could open if you ate food when you got there but gyms and bowling alleys remained closed. For gym owners and fitness enthusiasts, Monday can't get here fast enough.
I know what you're thinking "Levack you're out of shape. You don't care about the gym." Well, the reason I care about the gym is that I'm fat. Since I truly rededicating myself to my fitness journal two years ago, I've lost 30 pounds. I have A LONG way to go but with the gyms being closed that journey was nearly impossible for me. So while the gyms remained closed while almost every single other industry in the state was being given guidance to start reopening I've been really struggling.
I don't know what the exact guidelines will be but the fact that we're moving in the right direction I'm excited to get back to work on my weight loss.
According to an article in the Times Union:
"The New York State Fitness Alliance thanks Gov. Cuomo for his continued leadership in reopening the economy in an intelligent way," said Bill Lia, Chair of New York State Fitness Alliance and whose family operates multiple Vent Fitness businesses in the Capital Region. "The fitness industry is ready to reopen safely, with proper protocols in place to protect our employees and members. We look forward to providing New Yorkers access to safe fitness facilities so they can advance their physical and mental health."
While the other states are seeing real trouble, we are doing really well," Cuomo said. "We have to protect the progress and quarantine from other states.

Gym owners and elected officials spoke on the need to reopen gyms while at the Saw Mill Club in Mt. Kisco Aug. 13, 2020. Rockland/Westchester Journal News
MOUNT KISCO Local fitness clubownersoutlined Thursdaythe social distancing, sanitizingand othersafety measures they will useas they pushedfor the state to starta discussionabout reopening gyms, following theirstatewide shutdown since March due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.
"We're ready to be open today," Rick Beusman, owner of Saw Mill Club East, saidin response to a reporter's question during a news conferenceat the club on North Bedford Road. But hesaid he and others understandand wantto have adiscussionwith the state.
A plan has been submittedfor how fitness centers couldreopen, but "we haven't gotten any specific responses, besides some generalities" from the state, said Beusman, who sits on the board of the New York State Fitness Alliance, whichsubmittedtheplan in Albany.
"A big message today is that we consider ourselves to be an essential business in our local communities," he said.

At Saw Mill Club East, for instance, 50 percent of the cardio equipment has been removed to allow for better social distancing, Beusman said. Classeshave been reduced to less than half their previous sizes. Masks are required. Temperatures would betaken of people who arrive. There will be reservation and check-in usingphone apps to reserve training time slots and to restrictclass sizes.
Gyms had been slated to reopen under the state's Phase 4 reopening plan. ButGov. Andrew Cuomosaid earlier this year that they are to remainclosed until the state better understandshow the virus mightspread bywater droplets and air conditioning within indoor spaces.
Beusman said Saw Mill Club East is among fitness centers that want to work with the governor and officials in Albany. "We understand the reticence and concern the governor has. We think it's unfounded," he said, "but we simply want to be able to work this out."
Saw Mill Club East and some other fitness centers are not pursuing the matter through the courts.

But morethan 2,000 fitness-related businesses in New York havejoined a class actionthat seeks both an injunction preventing the state from continuing to ban general fitness gyms, CrossFit gyms and yoga and pilates studios from indoor operation. The suit also seeks financial compensation for the time they've been closed. The lawyerwhofiled the suit has said there'spotential loss of 60,000 to 90,000 jobs ifgyms and exercise studios permanently shut down and thatthe gyms can be operatedsafely.
On Thursday in Mount Kisco, areafitnessclubowners highlighted physical and mental health as reasonsto reopen and showed a video oftestimonials by people who in support. People who'vespent months at home during the effort to curb COVID-19's spread may have also experienced health issues including weight gain, which isassociated with diabetes and heart disease and which can befactors tied toserious COVID-19 cases.
"I applaud the quick action by the governor ... we should be thankful that we live in a state that's taking the issue seriously," said Bill Beck, president of Club Fitin Briarcliff Manor and Jefferson Valley. But hesaid exercise is a foundation for good health and people who do sohave improvedresistance to disease and better outcomes in fighting illness.
"Governor Cuomo talked about a program in New York to offer mental health resources to any New Yorker who needs it," Beck said."Well, if we could get back to health clubs we might need less of that. Let's do all that we can to help our community get in better shape through movement."
Beck said last month that Club Fit has been readyingfor months for reopening, including removingequipmentto create more distancing in itsfitness center and movingequipment to other areasthat had had different uses so that people have more workout space.
Several elected officialsexpressedsupport at the news conference for moving the discussions alongabout reopening, but did not expresslycall forimmediate reopening.
Mount Kisco Mayor Gina Picinich said the Beusman family openedSaw Mill Club Eastin thevillage in the 1970s and have been atthe forefront of promoting health and fitness. Over the years, more health clubs and gymsopened, she said, contributing to area villages and towns in other ways too.
"It's about being generous;it's about being philanthropic; they were good corporate citizens" forthe health of the local economy," Picinich said. "So it's really importantthat these employees are able to bring back their employees to help drive the health of our local economy as well."
State Sen. Peter Harckham said thecoalition of fitness clubs seeking a responsefromthe state is"here in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation" and this is"about a constructive partnershipas to howthis industry can safely open up."

"Extended periods of isolation is not only bad for the mind, but impacts the immune system and overall health," wrote owner Charles DeFrancesco. "While initially locking down was the correct course of action, many experts believe we need to pay more attention to the consequences at this point.

Before slimming down, Wall ate mostly fast food, processed carbs and meat. For breakfast, hed pick up McDonalds, ordering more fast fare than a normal portion, he said. For lunch, Wall would get a double portion of whatever was being served. Dinner, meanwhile, was less consistent, Wall said, as he would snack on and off until he went to bed which usually meant having two or three sandwiches.

Wall said that he wanted to bulk up right away with muscle mass, after being left with extra skin after the dramatic weight loss.

Midlife weight loss unlikely to reduce risk of an early death, scientists find – The Telegraph
Posted: August 14, 2020 at 11:44 pm
Midlife weight loss does not significantly reduce a person's risk of an early death because the damage has already largely been done, scientists have warned following a major study.
Researchers examined the data of 24,205 participants from 1998 to 2015 to track how changes in weight between young adulthood and later life affected health prospects.
The changes in Body Mass Index's (BMI) of the volunteers, aged 40-74 when they entered the study, were analysed over this period and compared with their index aged 25.
Scientists found that the participants whose BMI's fell from obese at age 25 down to overweightin midlife were 54 percent less likely to have died than those whose index's remained in the obeserange.
Analysis of the results indicated that 3.2 percent of the deaths would have been avoided if everyone with a BMI in the obeserange at age 25 had been able to slim down enough to drop down into the overweightcategory by midlife.
However, a similar reduction in death risk was not found in participants who lost weight later in life, with researchers suggesting this is because midlife weight loss is more closely tied to an ageing person's worsening general health.
The study, conducted by Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), also foundthat weight loss was rare overall, as only 0.8% of participants had BMIs that went from the obeseto the overweightrange.
Although this study focused on preventing premature deaths, maintaining a healthy weight will also reduce the burden of many chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer,Dr JoAnn Manson, the study's co-author, noted.
Dr Andrew Stokes, assistant professor of global health at BUSPH, said: The results indicate an important opportunity to improve population health through primary and secondary prevention of obesity, particularly at younger ages.

OSA Severity Reduced in Type 2 Diabetes With Lifestyle Interventions for Weight Loss – Pulmonology Advisor
Posted: August 14, 2020 at 11:44 pm
The use of intensive lifestyle intervention for weight loss in patients with type 2 diabetes has been shown to reduce the overall severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to study results published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Researchers conducted the longitudinal randomized controlled Sleep AHEAD study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00194259) an ancillary study of Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) enrolled participants from 4 of the 16 Look AHEAD sites.
Investigators sought to establish whether initial benefit of intensive lifestyle intervention for weight loss on OSA severity would be maintained at 10 years. The primary study objective was to determine whether the Look AHEAD intervention was associated with improvements in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) at 10 years and during the 10-year follow-up. Secondary objectives included determining whether this effect was independent of weight change and whether the intervention had an effect on changing an individuals OSA category.
Primary study inclusion criteria of Look AHEAD (and, thus, of Sleep AHEAD) were being between ages 45 and 7, having a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 (or 27 kg/m2 if taking insulin), physician-verified type 2 diabetes, and hemoglobin A1c of <11%. Participants received either intensive lifestyle intervention for weight loss or diabetes support and education (DSE). Of the 264 participants, 38.7% had mild OSA, 35.2% had moderate OSA, and 26.1% had severe OSA at baseline.
At 10 years, polysomnograms were obtained in 54% of those in the intensive lifestyle intervention group and in 48% of those in the DSE group. Mean weight losses in the intensive lifestyle intervention group at 1, 2, 4, and 10 years were 10.70.7 kg, 7.40.7 kg, 5.10.7 kg, and 7.10.8 kg, respectively. These weight losses were all significantly higher than the 1-kg weight loss at 1, 2, and 4 years, and the 3.50.8 kg weight loss at 10 years in the DSE group (P .0001).
The AHI was lower with intensive lifestyle intervention compared with DSE by 9.72.0, 8.02.0, and 7.92.2 events per hour at 1, 2, and 4 years, respectively (P .0004), and by 4.02.5 events per hour at 10 years (P =.109). Changes in AHI over time were associated with the amount of weight loss, baseline AHI, and year of the visit (P <.0001), as well as with the intervention independent of change in weight (P =.01). At 10 years, OSA remission occurred in more participants in the intensive lifestyle intervention compared with participants in DSE group (34.4% vs 22.2%, respectively).
The investigators concluded that although the greater improvement in OSA severity with intensive lifestyle intervention in the initial 4 years was no longer present at the 10-year follow-up and the greater weight loss in the intensive lifestyle intervention group also diminished at 10 years, overall OSA severity decreased across the 10-year study period with intensive lifestyle intervention. This improvement was associated with changes in body weight, greater severity of baseline OSA, and lifestyle intervention unrelated to weight change.
