Fasting means you have to stay clear from foods and drinks for a certain period of time. Several studies have proved that there are many health benefits of fasting such as better blood sugar control, low levels of inflammation, improved blood pressure , triglycerides and cholesterol levels. It also helps to prevent neurodegenerative disorders and increases growth hormone secretion. There may be a surge in popularity now, but it is a very old practice and plays a big role in many cultures and religions.
There different ways and types of fasting such as water fasting, juice fasting, partial fasting, calorie based, however, of late the most popular one is the intermittent fasting and it is touted as one of the best ways to lose weight. We asked Nutritionist and Lifestyle Educator Karishma Chawla to share more information about fasting. She also revealed how intermittent is one of the most preferred ones and several lesser-known things as well.
How effective is fasting for overall health and weight loss:
Karishma said, "The most popular form of fasting: Intermittent fasting is a fasting period from 12 -16 hours wherein only water is allowed. No tea, coffee or fruits as well. It could basically start once you finish dinner say at 9 pm at night counting up to the next 12 -16 hours. There are different kinds of intermittent fasting, where you play with hours, days and number of meals as well."
"Well, the concept behind intermittent fasting is it helps the with insulin efficacy which in turn helps with fat loss that works pretty well. One can also look at as a healing mechanism where not eating too frequently helps the blood flow to reach out places in the body where healing is required. Having said that I would still like to emphasize the concept of bio-individuality, where this kind of plan may work for one and not the other." She added, "The preferred fasting type is Intermittent fasting, provided it is executed smartly and based on the concept of bio-individuality."
Lesser know and important things to know about fasting:
She stated, "Detox practices such as juicing, fasting and detoxifying the body are elements of various ancient cultures and often rooted in spiritual times. During stress, the liver priorities its job to convert sugar into fuel to power the flight or fight response, so it doesnt have time to deal with toxins which may get pushed back into the bloodstream."
"Fasting or juice fast gives a body a good break from digestion, but prolonged fasting may actually hinder the detox process of the body. Also, extreme detox diets can increase the toxin release due to the rapid release of the fat burn which may be difficult for the body to handle. Such diets may also include cortisol, inflammation and psychological distress. Hence, it is imperative to eat a balanced diet, eat clean to enhance gut health (this itself helps the body detoxify) and then get on fasting versions to ensure the right kind of fat loss."
Fasting tips especially the beginners by Karishma:
Keep a vision board to keep yourself motivated( fasting can be overwhelming)
Break the fast with some lean protein and ensure at least 3 servings a day. Helps to manage cravings.
Go gradual on the fasting versions.
Be on a balanced meal pattern, rather than eating anything and everything.
Be mindful about not to overdo the carbs.
Take all the vitamins and supplements required.
Bottom line
Yes, there are several health benefits associated with fasting, however, it may not be right for everyone. Especially if you suffer from diabetes or low blood sugar, have a serious medical condition or have blood pressure issues. Even women who are pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid the same. It is mostly a no-no for people with eating disorders, underweight and older adults.

It appears that Mama June has been pretty serious about her weight loss lately! The reality TV star took to her go-to platform, Instagram, to show off her progress and fans are pretty impressed!
Mama June has been struggling with her legal as well as financial problems but thats not to say shes been sitting around and binge eating in self-pity!
The star doesnt seem like shes gained any more weight and in fact, it looks like she might have just dropped a few pounds!
June posed in a black jumpsuit in the snap she posted and whether it was the plunging, sleeveless jumpsuit that flattered her body type or shes actually transformed, she did look slimmer!
In the caption, it was not the jumpsuit that got some appreciation from her, however, but her shoes, June writing: I love my Christian Louboutin blinged out sneakers.
It did not take long for fans to flood her comment section with many compliments, one fan, for instance, writing: You look amazing!! So proud of you.
Another follower also made sure to tell her: Looking good Mama June.
This post comes only a few days after June and her controversial boyfriend, Geno Doak, spent some time at the beach before the Fourth of July.
At the time, June wore a barely there leopard print bathing suit, showing off all of her curves all the while her man was feeding her a corn dog.
The couple was photographed relaxing in the sun on blue and red camping chairs.
They were all smiles despite everything that has been going on in Junes life, both legally and financially.
During the finale of Mama June: Family Crisis, they admitted to having spent no less than $150,000 on cocaine in only half a year.

One more research proved that unsaturated fatty acids are more beneficial than saturated fats when it comes to weight maintenance. And in animal studies, MUFA rich diet not only prevents weight gain but also the accumulation of fat. Another study found that participants who had an olive-oil-enriched diet for at least 12 weeks saw reduced weight than following a control diet.
Aside from being rich in MUFAs, olive oil is also a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and as per certain studies, they also play a role when it comes to weight loss and maintenance of healthy weight. For the unversed, MCTs leads to more production of appetite-regulating hormones like peptide YY, which promotes feelings of fullness. It also increases calorie and fat-burning.
Quantity matters
1 Tbsp or 15 ml of olive has whopping 119 calories and 13.5 grams of fat, so it is best to have olive in limited quantities, or else it can backfire your weight loss journey.

My name is Carrie Robinson (@keepcalmcarryonfit), and Im 23. Im from Baltimore and Im an operations coordinator for a soccer company. After reaching my heaviest weight, I realized I wanted to focus on my health so I could spend more time with my family.
Growing up, I had a very rocky relationship with my weight. I was overweight most of my childhood, but when I was 16, I lost over 50 pounds. Unfortunately, the way I lost the weight wasnt healthy, and I was diagnosed with anorexia shortly after.
My relationship with food was extremely sensitive. I was in a binge and over-restrict cycle, which was really hard on me. I went to therapy for a while and that helped a lot. I also moved out of a toxic environment, which helped me heal and overcome my disordered eating habits.
Fast-forward to August 3rd, 2016, when I had my son. I had a lot of health issues during my pregnancy, including high blood pressure, IBS, and a high resting heart rate while I was pregnant. I gained 60 pounds, and after my sons birth, I was diagnosed with postpartum depression and anxiety.

I gained another 10 pounds over the following two years, putting me at 246 pounds.
Overall, I was just miserable and suffering constantly. I couldnt even carry my son around for more than two minutes without being completely out of breath.

On August 12th, 2018, I decided to start making changes for my health.
When I had lost weight previously (in a healthy mindset!), counting calories worked for me. A calorie deficit diet, or calories-in-calories-out (CICO) diet, is easy to track and maintain for me.
I also had originally cut dairy out of my diet to help with my stomach issues and acne, and eventually I started intermittent fasting along with calorie counting. I really like fasting because it eliminated late-night snacking.
Im usually never hungry in the morning anyway, so Ill drink my coffee and then wait until noon to eat my first meal. I enjoy the idea of having a window of time I can eat.

I tried picking up running, but it was really harsh on my knees and back. I ended up buying a cheap cycling machine off Amazon and would use it for 30 minutes a day for the first two months of my weight loss journey.
Then, I switched to running because it was less harsh on my body after losing 30 pounds. I got into running through an app called Couch To 5K, which taught me how to build my endurance, and I never looked back.

Now my typical week of exercise is usually four to six days of running. I love it so much. Three of those days are short runs for one to three miles followed by lower body strength training, upper body strength training, or core training.

Losing weight gave me the confidence I never had but always should have had. I shouldve always believed in myself, but it took doing something as difficult as this to recognize my potential. Progress isnt always linear and sometimes we have ups and downs, but the most important part is to keep pushing and stay strong. You've got this.

Ask anybody whos tried to lose weight through a new diet and maintain it for the long haul, and youll know that its no easy feat. This can be easily overcome naturally if you choose a flexitarian plant-based diet which depends predominantly on plant products, but also includes fish and eggs for the remaining nutrients.
2. Low-carb diet
Low carb diet can lower insulin levels in the body, help reverse insulin resistance in PCOS and pre-diabetes and it is beneficial for weight loss as well, says Akanksha Mishra, a clinical nutritionist and certified diabetes educator associated with MyUpchar. A study in Current Diabetes Reports in 2013 explains that carb consumption is the main reason behind post-meal glucose spikes, and can lead to weight gain and diabetes among other issues.
Inversely, reducing carb intake can lead to improved metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Another study published in BMJ in 2018 indicates that a low-carb low-fat diet can increase energy expenditure, and this metabolic effect can make sustained weight loss a possibility.
Its important to remember that low-carb does not mean no carb. Complete exclusion of any nutrient, even carbs, cannot be sustained for a long time because carbs are strongly associated with satiety.
For sustainability, you have to switch your simple carb to complex carb or protein-rich options, like switch wheat chapati with soya flour, pearl millet or black gram chapati. With this type of change, you will not miss your favourite foods and can follow this diet in the long run.
3. Mediterranean diet
You might have heard about the diet Italians and Greeks follow and how it leads to longevity, indicating a reduced risk of diseases. The Mediterranean diet is one of the best diets to follow for the lifetime because its beneficial for heart health, obesity, and chronic disease because of the large portions of food being healthy vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains, Mishra says. This diet completes all the nutritional requirements of the body and satisfies the taste buds as well, and that is why it is easy to stick in the long run.
But does it also contribute to weight loss? Studies suggest it does. One study published in the American Journal of Medicine in 2016 suggested that the Mediterranean diet results in similar weight loss and cardiovascular risk factor level reduction as low fat and low carb diets do. Another published in Nutrients in 2019 indicates that this diet pattern if introduced and adhered to during childhood years, can lead to lifelong prevention of unnecessary weight gain and obesity.
4. DASH diet
Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean meats, and cut off salt, red meat, added sugar and fat: thats what the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet insists on. Just like the Mediterranean diet, DASH is not an exclusively weight-loss diet. As a healthy eating pattern, DASH diet helps lower blood pressure, prevents or reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, kidney disease and keeps your weight under control, Mishra explains.
A study in Liver International in 2018 found that consumption of a DASH diet for at least eight weeks can lead to weight loss and reduction in triglycerides, inflammation, etc. However, if you are prone to low blood pressure, reducing salt intake excessively can have a negative impact on you. Its best to consult a doctor before starting this diet.
5. Intermittent fasting
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine in early 2020 found that metabolic switching through intermittent fasting can help lose weight and prevent other diseases in the long run. And this is not the only study in recent years that underlines the benefits of intermittent fasting for weight loss, because switching between periods of fasting and eating ensures satiety, boosts metabolism and detoxifies the body too.
The only problem with this diet strategy is managing cravings during fasting periods and reining in the cravings to eat anything available or unhealthy during the eating periods.

SEOUL, July 9 (Korea Bizwire) A recent study has revealed that elderly couples who live together for their entire lives are more likely to experience decrepitude and weight loss at the same time.
The study, carried out by a research team led by Won Chang-won, professor of family medicine at Kyung Hee University Medical Center, was conducted with the participation of 315 elderly couples between 70 and 84 years of age.
The results of the study were published in the June edition of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH).
After defining the state of decrepitude as satisfying three out of five criteria, i.e., a decline in walking speed, weakened grip force, extreme fatigue, weight loss and reduced activities, the research team attempted to prove that elderly couples have the same pattern of decrepitude.
The study showed that wives with decrepit husbands are almost five times as likely to be decrepit than others whose husbands are not decrepit.
The probability of a husband with a decrepit wife to himself be decrepit was more than three times higher than for those whose spouse was not decrepit.
Among the factors that cause decrepitude, unintended weight loss had the biggest impact on elderly couples.
When husbands lost weight, wives were more than eight times more likely to lose weight too, and when wives lost weight, husbands were almost five times more likely to also lose weight.
