High Fat Content of the Keto Diet: Is It a Health Concern? – Healthline
Posted: July 5, 2020 at 4:48 am
Though the keto diet may reduce insulin resistance and improve heart disease risk factors, other dietary patterns may be easier to adhere to.
Q: Is the high fat content of the keto diet a concern for people with certain health conditions like insulin resistance or heart disease?
The ketogenic or keto diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that many people use to promote weight loss and manage their blood sugar levels.
For example, studies show that the keto diet may aid weight loss, enhance blood sugar control, and improve heart disease risk factors like triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. The keto diet may also increase heart-protective HDL cholesterol (1).
Additionally, the keto diet may help reduce insulin resistance, a condition in which cells become resistant to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of diabetes (2).
Therefore, the high fat content of the keto diet might not necessarily be a concern for people with certain conditions like insulin resistance and heart disease.
However, although evidence suggests that following a keto diet may have metabolic benefits, such as reducing blood sugar and triglyceride levels, high quality, long-term studies exploring the relationship between keto dietary patterns and overall health are lacking (2).
Plus, the keto diet is highly restrictive and not typically necessary to promote weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, or reduce heart disease risk factors. In fact, less restrictive dietary patterns that focus on nutrient-dense foods and overall diet quality rather than macronutrient composition are usually a better option.
This is because keto diets are so low in carbs typically under 10% of your total calorie intake that theyre generally not sustainable long term (3).
On the other hand, the Mediterranean diet, a dietary pattern thats rich in fiber, protein, and healthy fats, has decades of scientific research supporting its ability to promote weight loss and reduce chronic disease risk not to mention good adherence scores (4).
While the keto diet may offer some health benefits, the same benefits can likely be achieved by following a less restrictive eating pattern that can be followed for life.

What Is The Body Reset Diet By Harley Pasternak? How It Works – Women’s Health
Posted: July 5, 2020 at 4:48 am
Whether you're looking to lose weight or not, the idea of doing a "reset" or starting fresh with your diet can be really appealing, especially if you've been struggling to eat healthy lately. If that's the case, an eating plan called the Body Reset Diet could be right up your alley.
It's a program that helped Jessica Simpson drop 100 pounds (!) after giving birth to her third baby in 2019, under the guidance of her trainer and the program developer, Harley Pasternak. (She also built up her postpartum exercise routine, starting out with walking 6,000 steps a day and working her way up to 14,000 steps.)
The Body Reset Diet is a smoothie-involving eating plan that may boost metabolism and yield dramatic results for some people. But is this diet a healthy and sustainable way to eat nutritiously, feel better, and possibly lose weight? We tapped nutritionists to find out.
This diet program is not exactly new: Celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak developed the Body Reset Diet back in 2013. But it's a diet plan that holds strong and garners the attention of many celebs. The inspiration behind the diet [seems to be] to bring together great food in moderation, while encouraging plenty of active movement and water intake throughout the day, says Vanessa Rissetto MS, RD, CDN, co-founder of Culina Health.
The diet involves a lot of liquid meals, though its not completely liquid. And there are different phases, some of which involve pairing other types of simple meals with the Body Reset Diet smoothies at other points during the day.
Its not actually a very long program at all. Body Reset is divided into three five-day phases, Rissetto explains. During each phase there is a focus on different meal formats, but regardless, its a lot of drinking smoothies. That way, you can incorporate a variety of micronutrients, including fiber, protein, and healthy fats, in one glass.
A smoothie may not be the most filling option for a meal, but its definitely convenient to toss ingredients in a blender, pour them out, and take them on the goan the objective of Pasternaks plan, says Rissetto.
The first phase involves three smoothies per day as meals. Phase two involves having two smoothie meals plus one S meal, which stands for single dish; you can have solid foods in the form of a scramble, salad, soup, stir fry, or sandwich, Rissetto explains. The purpose of sticking to a one-item meal is to refrain from overeating, says Rissetto. Plus, one-item meals are simple to prepare, like the smoothies.
During the third phase, two of your meals can be S meals, and you have just one is a smoothie. And in between meals, especially if those involve smoothies, the program allows you two crunchy snacks to keep you satiatedthose will be full of fiber, protein, and healthy fats (for example: an apple, almonds, or edamame).
The Body Reset Diet: Power Your Metabolism, Blast Fat, and Shed Pounds in Just 15 Days
Because this is a lower-calorie diet, theres a huge emphasis on fiber intake to keep you full, and to keep your digestion and metabolism healthy. Thats why many of the smoothies contain high-fiber fruits like apples and peaches. The second two phases emphasize lean protein (think: lots of chicken and eggs) as well as healthy fats like avocado.
During the smoothie phase (a.k.a. phase one), you can have three different types of smoothies for meals: white, red, and green. The white smoothie, or breakfast smoothie, has a Greek yogurt baseyou can add apples or peaches, banana, almonds, and non-fat milk to it.
For lunch, theres the red smoothie, which has a red berry base; it also includes whey protein powder and an orange. The green (dinner) smoothie can be customized with your choice of greens, such as spinach or kale, and can include avocado and Greek yogurt, too. Once you get into the second and third phases, you can introduce more creative recipes for your solid meals, like breakfast burritos, chicken flatbreads, and pumpkin soup. You can find recipes for all the smoothies, S meals, and snack options in Pasternaks Body Reset cookbook.
The foods to stay away from on the Body Reset are anything high in fat or caloriestakeout is off-limits, as is fried food, processed meats, and refined grains. Youll have to skip soda, alcohol, candy, and junk food, too. When it comes to fruit, a huge component of the diet, Pasternak promotes higher-fiber fruits in the smoothies, like pears, as opposed to fruits like watermelon or honeydew, which are lower in fiber.
If youre drinking most of your food, at least at the beginning of the Body Reset Diet, youre likely to lose weight, says Rissetto, especially because youre eating mostly fruit and vegetables and slashing your calorie intake.
One thing to note is that the Body Reset Diet is a short-term program, so you might lose weight initially, but if you stopped the diet immediately after completing the three phases and began eating as you were previously right away, you might gain those pounds back, Rissetto suspects.
This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
It also might not have a long-term effect on your metabolism, especially if youre not upping your workouts that much along with it, she says. Rissetto also adds that it may not the best plan for anyone whos diabetic, since the smoothies will increase your sugar intake quite a bit.
But even the name of the plan clarifies that this is a reset, so to speak. So it may help you regroup and restart some healthy eating habits, even when you finish the plan.
Pasternak advises skipping a Spin or boot camp class in the beginning of the diet and just walking10,000 steps a dayalong with doing regular resistance training.
Rissetto advises keeping your exercise low-impact, to workouts like yoga, Pilates, and walking. I think the low amount of calories in phases one and two would likely adversely affect you if you had any intense workouts, Rissetto says.
If youre looking for a quick way to shed some weight, the Body Reset Diet may be the ticket. Small, frequent meals for many people can help prevent one from eating too much or too little and may help the body more efficiently use energy and enhance metabolic processes, says Sheena Batura, MS, RDN, LD, registered dietitian at Everlywell. Plus, youre loading up your diet with fruits and veggies, lean protein, and healthy fats, Batura says. The emphasis on fiber is good for gut health and regular digestion, may reduce your cholesterol, and keeps you full for longer, Batura adds.
While you wont be running marathons on this diet, youre still moving and strengthening your body with resistance training, which Batura points out is beneficial for your heart health. In addition, you may save money weekly at the grocery store because youre eating less, Rissetto says, especially in the beginning. You also wont be spending a ton on the fruit and veggies.
On the flip side, your food intake, though chock full of fruits and veggies, is primarily liquid for 10 days out of the whole program. A restrictive diet, for many, is hard to stick toespecially for those who are social beings who may feel limited at social events or see this as a quick way to lose weight without a true intrinsic motivator for a lifestyle change, Batura says. Also, she adds, you might feel less satiated because youre not chewing your food as much when digesting it.
The other issue is that the program isnt exactly sustainable. To keep off a significant amount of weight, Batura says, youd need to continuously lose two to five pounds every week. Short-term weight loss often doesn't equal lifestyle change," Batura says. "Evidence suggests long-term changes make the biggest impact on overall healthand we see this when it comes to how sustained weight loss can positively impact heart health, diabetes, and more."
Ultimately, it might take overhauling your diet (and exercise regimen) beyond the 15-day Body Reset Diet to build toward true lifestyle change, but you may experience some initial weight loss on the plan. You can also continue using the healthy recipes beyond the "reset" to continue your healthy lifestyle.
The bottom line: The Body Reset Diet focuses on smoothies and high-fiber, single-item meals. It may help you lose weight initially, but you should always talk to your doctor before trying a new eating plan to make sure it's right for you.

Edward Scissorhands is more than a gothic fairytale. Its more than a suburban satire. Its a complex film about systemic societal and economic change. Writer Caroline Thompson, director Tim Burton, costume designer Colleen Atwood, and production designer Bo Welch convey timely themes of classism, diversity, and suburban vapidity (post-war Suburbia through the Reagan Era suburban revival) through the use of snow, Edwards (Johnny Depp) peculiar, unchanging outfit, the suburban setting, and a stealthily symbolic mansion. The story of Edward Scissorhands was conceived during Burtons awkward suburban childhood upbringing in Burbank, California. It can be dated back to a single drawing in Burtons teenage years of an early iteration of the Scissorhands character, which represented Burtons feeling of isolation, his inability to maintain friendships, and communicate effectively with his peers.
In Burtons biography by Helena Bassil-Morozow titled, Tim Burton: The Monster and the Crowd: A Post-Jungian Perspective, he explained, I never really fell out with people, but I didnt really retain friends. I get the feeling people just got this urge to want to leave me alone for some reason, I dont know why exactly. It was as if I was exuding some sort of aura that said Leave me the fuck alone. What began as an auteur-in-the-makings lack of belonging in his own neighborhood grew into an intelligent allegory for suburban America and humankinds manmade, pun intended, prejudice against anything that is considered different from the current norm.
This post contains spoilers for Edward Scissorhands.
At the end of Edward Scissorhands, when an aged Kims granddaughter asks how Kim (Winona Ryder) is certain Edward still walks the dilapidated floorboards high up in his gothic mansion, Kim explains, Before he came down here, it never snowed. And afterwards, it did. I dont think it would be snowing now if he werent still up there. Sometimes you can still catch me dancing in it.
In portraying Edward as an outsider who brings the gift of snow to the neighborhoods out-of-touch, pastel-laden, sunny suburban bubble with an apathetic undertone, Kim, Burton, and Thompson underscore the long-term influence of diversity inclusion. Edward could be seen as disabled. He has scissors instead of hands. Its something hes particularly self-conscious about. Many consider his appearance dangerous-looking for obvious, aforementioned reasons. However, thats also what makes him temporarily appealing to the profoundly-bored residents searching for excitement.
Despite his scissors, at first, almost universal appeal as a refreshing new mix into the residents daily, head-scratching routines, they ultimately become shunned as weapons instead of the hands and tools of a human being and brilliant artist. Still, whether or not these residents ever consciously think about Edward again after they drive him away, their lives are subconsciously changed, their ignorant perspectives on life ever-so broadened. Enlightened.
Although the neighborhood ultimately rejects Edward, exiling him back to his isolated, darkly-contrasted mansion, he continues to bring joy to the residents that turned on him; even though his garden sculptures and eccentric haircuts are no longer visual markers of the neighborhood, reflecting his short-term, positive change upon the long-stagnant residents, his legacy lives on. The snowfall is a consistent reminder of Edwards unconscious, long-term impact on the changing social constructs of the community and the communities it represents.
Edward and The Inventors (Vincent Price) mansion is void of color, decrepit, perched on the crest of a towering hill, the visual and thematic antithesis of the colorful uniformity that represents Suburbia. Credit Bo Welch for creating one of the most memorable mansions in cinema history, and, arguably, the most original cinematic take on suburban monotony with the bizarre yet familiar neighborhood below it. Welch told the LA Times that the old circus colors painted on the subdivision in Florida, where they filmed Edward Scissorhands, represent the faded optimism of the middle-class neighborhoods the film aims to satirize.
The mansion is a dying structure symbolizing the end of the bohemian lifestyle, The Inventors death solidifying the downfall of individual autonomy and creativity with the onset of a new era of supply chain management and worker homogeneity. Without The Inventor as his North Star, Edward is unwittingly thrown into modern-day society after living this whole lifespan in an attic, looking down at it, through cracks among his decaying roof. The word modern-day implies a present-day setting. However, Edward Scissorhands is an amalgamation of two succinct time periods: The original suburban boom and its revitalization some 30 years later.
One can see hints of 1950s post-war suburban American society through specific products, Avon (Peg is a salesperson, who were popularized in the 1950s-1960s), the uniform, single-storied, Levittown-esque housing developments, the neighbors matching old station-wagons, and Burtons trademark birds eye shots of cars simultaneously pulling out of their driveways, representing the collective automation that suburban society has spawned.
However, one can also see the present day in Burtons unique world through modern technology and attire such as Jims 1970s VW, his fathers high tech entertainment room and alarm system, Edwards 1980s Virginia hat, the evolution of white-American gentrification in the form of strip malls and mass-consumption (emblematic of Reaganomics), the unsavory architectural aesthetics of an expanding 1980s suburban revival, and the cloyingly nosy nature of the residents of this neighborhood, masking their petty anxieties that emerge after decades of living in a suburban bubble. The the least-flattering effects of capitalism have initiated suburban decay. The residents convey a fleeting, unanimous obsession for the eccentric Edward, desperately trying to escape their own mundane lives.
Burton and Thompson utilize this complimentary juxtaposition of time periods. The parallel, opposing natures of Edward and that of the neighborhood (and the larger communities they represent) create a surreal suburban fantasy that highlights sociopolitical issues of classism and institutional segregation. Consider the members of the community the bourgeoisie, morally corrupted, living in excess without a care for anything outside of themselves and their own issues. Further, everything has become a competition in this capitalist wasteland; neighbors compete for who has the latest and greatest material possessions on the block.
Contrarily, Edward not only represents the innocent, childlike figure, unexposed to the neighborhoods excesses and the negative consequences that accompany them, but, in some ways, the proletariat. Since he is essentially forgotten in society, he would be considered, in many ways, the lumpenproletariat, or the underclass.
Edward, with weapons for hands, shockingly pale skin, discordantly dark, unruly hair, isnt the true monster in this Mary Shelley update. The residents of his once-welcoming neighborhood are. Four-time Oscar winner and frequent Burton collaborator Colleen Atwood takes Burtons original childhood sketch and expounds upon its visual flourishes, crafting a steampunk-inspired costume for Edward that sticks out like a sore thumb among the vanilla residents. Not everyone in the neighborhood digs the look.
One resident, Esmeralda (O-Lan Jones), takes it so far as to refer to Edward as the spawn of the devil, slurring hateful profanities at anyone daring to associate with him. Similarly, for other, more primal, flawed-masculinity-related reasons, Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) despises Edward. Meanwhile, the residents have become so immersed in the material superfluity of the current Reagan boom, hiding away in their segregated suburban tract delusion, that they dont even realize how overt their subconscious prejudice against Edward, the other, slowly grows to meet that of Esmeralda and Jims, eventually driving him out in extreme pitches and torches-esque fashion.
Beginning in the 1980s, the American suburbs became increasingly diverse, with more incoming residents representing the other; a larger population of minorities began to move to the highly uniform residential communities on the outskirts of their cities. True gentrification. Still, with suburban neighborhoods remaining predominantly white today, we have a long way to go as a society. Until we fully accept that no one neighborhood belongs to any specific kind of people, perhaps we cant truly coexist. However, at least the suburban satire subgenre isnt fading any time soon. Like Peg, it doesnt hurt to attempt to spot a bright side among stunted progress, I suppose. Burtons substantial critique of Suburbia and jab at capitalism speak to more complicated issues of income inequality, institutional segregation, and sparks deeper conversations about education, police, and big business reform. One just needs to ponder the implications of the prejudices and physical and societal hurdles that Edward faces when he attempts to assimilate.

Intermittent Fasting Part 1: How It Helps You Lose Weight and What are the Different Ways to Do It – News18
Posted: July 5, 2020 at 4:47 am
Intermittent fasting - sometimes referred to as intermittent energy restriction (IER) - is one of the most popular diet systems in the world right now. Even though there are many variations of intermittent fasting currently doing the rounds, this diet system itself is known to be quite effective. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about intermittent fasting (IF).
What is intermittent fasting?
IF is a cycle of fasting and feeding, which involves time-restricted eating during certain times of the day or days of the week (depending on the type of IF youre on). This system restricts calorie intake, thereby generating a hormetic or good type of stress to which the body commonly responds to by improving metabolic and cellular performance. If you are obese or overweight, the IF diet can help you shed weight by naturally flushing out damaged and harmful cells.
How does intermittent fasting work?
Quite like a low-carb diet, IF forces your body to break down stored fats for energy by increasing the gap between meals. Depending on how long your fasting period is and what you consume during the eating period, your body will start burning stored fat reserves and improve insulin sensitivity, among other benefits.
Can intermittent fasting really benefit me?
A study published inCurrent Obesity Reportsin 2018 reveals that IF can help in weight loss, improve metabolic biomarkers, cognition, digestion, may reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, and can delay ageing too. The study also points out that these benefits may vary according to the type of IF youre following, your age and the duration of the diet.
It's best to consult an expert before you begin any diet though, just to make sure it is suitable for you.
What are the types of intermittent fasting?
There are three main types of IF:

Seven dogs from Pawprints Dog Rescue struggling to find forever homes in Rugby – Coventry Telegraph
Posted: July 5, 2020 at 4:47 am
Pawprints dog rescue in Rugby has been rehoming dogs for almost a decade.
The rescue started as a Facebook group to help reunite lost and stolen dogs with their families, but many were left unclaimed.
Volunteers dedicated time to finding spaces in rescue centres for the dogs but when vacancies dried up, they were forced to take action.
Pawprints began fundraising and acquired their own kennels in 2012, and have rescued hundreds of dogs from being put to sleep.
Here are seven of their beautiful residents who have been struggling to find a forever home.
Saffy is an eight-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier cross who loves people.
Despite her age, when Saffy isn't cuddled up on the sofa, she loves playing and going for walks. Shes an energetic girl and loves to play football!
She loves her food and treats - she came into Pawprints very overweight and is still searching for that healthy waistline. New owners must be onboard with helping her lose weight, so that she can live a long happy, healthy life.
She would suit a quiet home where she gets all the fuss and attention she craves. She would need to be the only pet with access to a secure garden and no neighbouring or visiting dogs but she can live with teenage children.
She will need to be on-lead when walked as she is concerned by other dogs and may bark if worried. She is also on medication for on-going ear issues.
Check out those ears! Rosie is a one-year-old German shepherd cross akita and is a gentle giant who doesnt know her own size.
The pup weighs 30kg and gets a bit over excited when greeting new people and dogs, so will need teaching the correct way to approach them
She loves to play ball and plays on the small trampoline at the kennels.
Pawprints said: Rosie is still learning how to walk nicely on the lead and can be very strong and pull and this is an area that her new humans will need to ensure they can handle safely and securely whilst continuing her training in the home.
She needs an active home with humans that enjoy walking or running and will need both mental enrichment as well as physical enrichment. Due to her size and low amount of training she will need to be in a home with no other dogs or animals and with experienced teenage children only.
Rosie will benefit from humans that have experience in both large breeds and training to help her learn and grow into an adult dog.
Xena is a large bull breed cross between one and a half to two years old and loves cuddles on the sofa.
She came into Pawprints as an unclaimed stray and so the rescue has little history on her.
Shes a big girl and can be confident in some situations, but nervous by new people and strange things in others. The rescue says Xena is particularly worried of men, loud noises, fireworks and thunderstorms.
However, the young pooch has begun making friends and building trust with dogs and people at the kennels.
Pawprints said: She responds extremely well to kind, reward-based training with food and physical comfort, and is looking for new owners who have owned bull breed mixes before or are invested in learning more and continuing her training.
She would like a home in a quiet location and would like a patient and understanding family to grow with, and love forever.
Xena can be rehomed with teenage children and may be suitable to live with a dog pending introductions. She may also be suitable near horses, pending introductions, but not cats or small furries.
She is not housetrained and will need to have her time left alone built up very gradually until she feels safe and secure in her new home.
Xena will need multiple introductions to form a bond and will require further training to build her confidence.
Ex-racing greyhound Kirby is around two years old and has lived in the kennels for most of her life.
Now, shes looking for a patient owner with a comfortable sofa to settle down with.
Kirby will need toilet training, and to be muzzled when walking. She has no recall, so cant be walked off lead unless in a secure area.
Pawprints said: Kirby is a sweet girl and very loving, she would like a family with humans that are there for her most of the day.
She has been kennelled with another greyhound so could live with a well-matched canine companion, however she cannot live with anything smaller than herself, that goes for cats and any other animals too.
Kirby is gentle but can jump up when greeting you so could live with children who are over 12 years of age.
Coco is a six-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier cross American bulldog.
Coco is such a friendly dog and loves everyone she meets greeting them all with a very waggy tail and wiggly bum.
She would prefer a home with no other dogs or animals and will need further socialising with other dogs as is keen to learn more doggy etiquette.
She has no recall and would need to be walked on a lead. She can live with experienced teenagers and would like her new family to be home most of the time.
Pawprints said: When out and about she generally walks nicely on the lead with not much pulling and loves to play ball. She can get a little over excited during play so she does need further training in this area to understand doggy manners during playtime.
Coco will need further training in certain areas and will need an active home where she can get both mental and physical enrichment.
Four-year-old Izzy is another ex-racing greyhound who has been at Pawprints for the majority of her life.
Shes described as a sweet girl and very loving, and would like her new family home a lot of the day to keep her company.
Izzy is currently kennelled with Teejay and could be either rehomed with him or separately. She is unable to live with pets smaller than herself, like cats or rabbits.
Pawprints added: Izzy is looking for a home with an owner who has time and patience to help her with toilet training as she may have one or two accidents until she settles into her new home.
Izzy is used to being muzzled when out and about and has no recall so cannot be let off the lead unless in a safe and secure area.
She is gentle but can jump up when greeting you so could live with children who are over 12 years of age.
Teejay is currently kennelled up with Izzy for company. The five-year-old ex-racing greyhound is a sweet and sensitive boy looking for someone to help him build up his confidence.
He can be nervous around new people and in new situations, and will need someone patient to help him with his toilet training.
Pawprints said: Teejay is a sweet boy and once he gets to know you, he is very loving. He would like a family with humans that are there for her most of the day and is looking for a quiet home.
Teejay is currently kennelled with Izzy and could be either rehomed with her or separately but he would benefit from living with a well-matched canine companion.

Due to Tejay's sensitive side he is looking for a quiet retirement home, living with children over 12 may be considered on a case by case basis.
He is used to being muzzled when out and about and has no recall so cannot be let off the lead unless in a safe and secure area. He is not suitable to live with smaller pets.

Posted: July 4, 2020 at 6:44 am
American holidays and booze tend to go hand in hand. But it is entirely possible to indulge in a few cocktails (or mocktails) and throw some meat on the grill this year without the guilt or unnecessary bloating.
Heres your complete guide to making sure fireworks are the only thing youre blowing up this year.
While it is entirely possible to include some alcohol in your fat loss regimen, it can make achieving results significantly harder. Alcohol is a source of empty calories and when we overdo it, those calories can rack up quickly leading to fat gain.
As a toxin, it also tends to mess with your metabolism. Your body will try to metabolize alcohol before anything else, including food and body fat.
Lastly, drinking a lot of alcohol can mess with your mood, appetite, and sleep, throwing a willpower grenade into your good intentions.
In other words, if you are serious about losing weight, you might want to consider giving up drinking for a little while.
If you are going to indulge this holiday, just be mindful of the types of drinks you choose and how much you consume. As long as you stay within your daily calorie goals, you shouldnt gain weight from the occasional splurge. You might, however, have some water weight gain and a little guilt afterward.
To help cut back on added calories, keep it simple with a light beer, spiked seltzer, or glass of wine. Sugar-sweetened mixers can pack a ton of extra calories and sugar into a glass half a cup of sweetened margarita mix has over 100 calories and 24 grams of added sugar!
Dont forget to drink plenty of water to keep you feeling full and hydrated and help provide a helping hand to your potential hangover.
Here are five easy diet-friendly cocktail recipes that will keep you hydrated and on track this summer.

What Hong Kong losing its ‘special status’ would mean – The Straits Times
Posted: July 4, 2020 at 6:44 am
HONG KONG (BLOOMBERG) - Under the United States-Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992, the US treats Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous part of China with its own legal and economic system, differently than the Chinese mainland in trade, commerce and other areas.
President Donald Trump has begun stripping away that "special status" to punish China for moves to tighten its grip on the city after a year of pro-democracy street protests.
At its most extreme, that could mean the global financial hub being treated the same as any other Chinese city - a seismic shift that could harm both economies at an already difficult time. China has already begun retaliating.
It's going. On May 27, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo notified Congress that the Trump administration no longer regarded Hong Kong as autonomous from mainland China. On June 29, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the special status had therefore been revoked.
In an opening salvo, Pompeo announced visa restrictions against unspecified Chinese officials; China did the same against Americans. Mr Pompeo said the US would also cease selling defence equipment to Hong Kong, a largely symbolic act that will mostly affect the city's police and corrections forces. The Commerce Department made it harder to export sensitive American technology to Hong Kong by suspending special treatment in areas including export licence exceptions; Hong Kong's leader said the impact would be "minimal". More far-reaching measures could follow. The city is still treated differently from the mainland when it comes to tariffs, for instance.
It's up to Mr Trump to decide how quickly he wants to move while he's also threatening consequences for China over its handling of the coronavirus and its repression of minorities in Xinjiang province. Hurting China also carries additional risks for the US economy, including the US-China trade deal that Mr Trump had considered one of his biggest achievements, which could affect his odds of winning re-election. Mr Trump has made harsh comments but hasn't threatened specific punishments for the Beijing government.
While Hong Kong remains a key gateway from China to the rest of the world, it matters far less to the country's fortunes than it once did. In 2019, 12 per cent of China's exports went to or through Hong Kong, down from 45 per cent in 1992. China is also far less reliant on inflows of foreign capital and expertise, and has made a much lower priority of making the yuan an international currency. Nonetheless, the city still matters. Hong Kong's open capital account and adherence to international standards of governance are unmatched by any mainland Chinese city and make it an important base for international banks and trading firms. Revoking the special status would be "the nuclear option" and "the beginning of the death of Hong Kong as we know it", said Professor Steve Tsang, director of the University of London's SOAS China Institute.
One worst-case scenario: if the US treats Hong Kong no differently than any other Chinese city, why wouldn't ratings firms and investors do the same? It's a question posed by Deutsche Bank, which noted that S&P Global Ratings has Hong Kong three notches above China while Moody's and Fitch have Hong Kong one notch higher. The risk is that China's own rating gets lowered in coming years and drags Hong Kong's with it. At the same time, equity index providers may take a fresh look at Hong Kong, which is currently in the MSCI World Index with other developed markets. China is in the emerging market index, raising the question, should Hong Kong be treated the same as Shanghai and Shenzhen?
It has its own reasons for not rocking the boat too much. Hong Kong, the only semi-democratic jurisdiction under Chinese rule, offers US companies a relatively safe way to access the Chinese market and employs a US dollar peg, linking it with the American financial system. According to the Congressional Research Service, the largest US trade surplus in 2019 was with Hong Kong - US$36 billion (S$50.1 billion). Hong Kong counted 278 US companies with regional headquarters in the city that year and another 457 with offices. Hong Kong's first justice minister after the handover to China in 1997, Ms Elsie Leung, told the South China Morning Post in May that any damage would be mutual: "We are not just getting the benefits - it's a free-trade arrangement which is good for both sides."
Despite the US action, Chinese lawmakers approved new national security legislation for Hong Kong anyway. The Foreign Ministry has promised unspecified retaliation against what it terms foreign interference, insisting Hong Kong is purely an internal affair. China said last year it would sanction some US-based activist groups including the National Endowment for Democracy, Human Rights Watch and Freedom House, and suspend port visits by US Navy ships to Hong Kong. The official Xinhua News Agency has dismissed as "groundless" accusations about the loss of freedom or human rights issues in Hong Kong. It also noted that the 2018 Human Freedom Index compiled by the Fraser Institute, a Vancouver-based think tank, ranked Hong Kong at No. 3, well ahead of the US at No. 17.
The city's leader, Chief Executive Carrie Lam, has defended the national security law (as has Mr Li Ka-shing, Hong Kong's richest tycoon). Mrs Lam also has said it would be "totally unacceptable" for foreign legislatures to interfere in Hong Kong's internal affairs, and that sanctions would only complicate the problems in the city. (Mrs Lam was selected in 2017 by a committee of 1,200 political insiders overwhelmingly loyal to the Chinese government.) She has sought to reassure investors that the city still adheres to the rule of law and has an independent judiciary. She also has defended police actions.
As a largely leaderless movement, the Hong Kong protests have made no official request for international assistance. But some prominent activists including Mr Jimmy Lai and Mr Joshua Wong called on Mr Trump to hit China hard with sanctions, even to the point of revoking the city's special trading status. Mr Wong had testified last year in Washington in favour of the Bill, seeking to put pressure on China. On the streets of Hong Kong, some protesters have made clear their interest in US support by waving American flags, singing The Star-Spangled Banner and calling on Mr Trump to "liberate" Hong Kong.

Weight loss story: I lost 21 kilos without going to gym and by simply following Intermittent Fasting! – Times of India
Posted: July 4, 2020 at 6:42 am
When 31-year-old Aiswarya Pandiyan realised that she was inching towards the overweight category, she felt really dejected. Her weight loss journey is a living proof that lifestyle along with a rock-solid determination can contribute to tremendous health benefits. Read on.Name: Aiswarya Pandiyan
Occupation: Team lead
Age: 31 yearsHeight: 5 feet 4 inch
City: Chennai
Highest weight recorded: 71 kgs
Weight lost: 21 kgsDuration it took me to lose weight: 10 months
The turning point: Even though I had gradually gained quite a lot of weight post my marriage, the day I realised that none of my dresses fit me any longer was a huge shocker! I weighed 71 kilos and the fat percentage parameter had put me in the obese category. Even my clothing size had jumped from M to XL! Once, I realised that I needed to lose weight, I tried several diets to get back in shape which really impacted my immune system. Hence, I decided to stick Intermittent fasting and that is when the magic started happening!
My breakfast: I wanted to follow something which I could continue doing in the long run. So, being a South Indian I stuck to eating regular South Indian breakfast like idly, dosa, upma, ragi porridge in portion control.
My lunch: Curry, 1 chapati, a portion of vegetables, boiled legumes, 1-2 eggs, and buttermilk. I switched between chicken and prawns as well.My dinner: I made it a point to have a big, balanced meal for my dinner
Pre-workout meal: I worked out during my fasting window of IF (Intermittent Fasting), so I did not eat anything before my workout.
Post-workout meal: Almonds and 2 boiled eggs
I indulge in: Since I did not go for any diet, I enjoyed regular home-cooked meals. All my meals were balanced with carbs, proteins and fat and I also made it a point to drink a lot of water. Once a week, I would indulge in my favourite Dominos choco lava cake with white sauce pasta
My workout: Initially, I was not very comfortable with extensive work out sessions, so I chose to stick to walking and climbing stairs. Gradually, as I started to lose weight, I balanced my workout routine with cardio and strength training at home. I absolutely vouch on mountain climbers squat variations. I can proudly say that I never step a foot inside any gym and did all my workout at home! And by doing so, I have reduced my fat percentage and toned my physique.
Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Unfortunately, I have realised that I am not a low-carb person. I tried Keto, got sick and my immune system was wrecked.
Fitness secrets I unveiled: Intermittent fasting worked really well for me! Additionally, I ensured to stay consistent with my efforts, eat healthily and stay hydrated.
How do I stay motivated? Even though I received unconditional support from my friends and family in my weight loss journey, there is no bigger motivation than seeing yourself transform. Once, I could see visible results, there was no looking back. Every day felt like a new learning experience on my journey to lose weight.
How do you ensure you dont lose focus? One of the simplest ways of keeping yourself motivated is to take a look at your old photographs and see how far you have come in life. For me, it works as my greatest source of motivation and helps me to keep moving forward in life. I decided to create a Facebook page India Intermittent Fasting for Women to support women of all age groups who wish to lose weight and get back in shape, in a healthy manner. The page has more than 12 thousand members as of now, who motivate and constantly challenge each other to do better. What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I see myself as a very healthy and active individual who is helping others to achieve their weight loss goals.
What are the lifestyle changes you made? I made a lot of lifestyle changes to reach my weight loss goal. Some of them included:1. Eating balanced meals
