Crazy weight loss and a mom that surprised herself in Flyers-Penguins Marathon on Ice – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

All week at NBC Sports Philadelphia, we're debating the biggest villains in Philly sports history. Today, we look atthe Flyers. You can vote here.

Picking an ultimate villain for Flyers fans?

How about a guy who basically fought a fan during a game in Philadelphia? Not a bad choice.

When thinking of players despised by the orange and black faithful, Tie Domi instantly comes to mind as does that not-so-hospitable visiting penalty box at the Wells Fargo Center.

Domi, a tough, in-your-face, penalty-minute-collecting winger who enjoyed a 16-year NHL career, scored only four goals for four points in 46 career regular-season meetings with the Flyers.

Playing the bulk of his career for the Maple Leafs, Domi made his imprint in Philadelphia with 238 career penalty minutes against the Flyers, his third most against any NHL team. He truly left his mark, though, on March 29, 2001, in a game at the then-First Union Center. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the third period, Domi went to the sin bin and became the recipient of some heckling (and maybe more). Domi retaliated by spraying a few fans with a water bottle, prompting fan Christopher Falcone to lunge at the protective glass between the stands and the box.

As the glass collapsed, a moment was born and the mystic of Philly sports fans grew. Falcone stumbled into the box and a fracas ensued with Domi and linesman Kevin Collins in the middle of it.

Toronto's 2-1 victory became a subplot to the Domi-Falcone showdown.

To make the story crazier, Falcone opened up a lawsuit againstDomi, Collins and Comcast Spectacor. However, the beef was eventually ended. In an episode of the Spittin Chiclets podcast, Domi explained how he orchestrated the two to meet before a game in Philadelphia. They got to know each other, hashed things out and Domi said he brought Falcone to Toronto for a playoff game against the Flyers.

Don't think that the gesturefixed the whole Domi-Philly relationship.

In a fun twist, Domi's son Max was actually aFlyers fan as a kidfor apersonal and meaningful reason.

I was definitely a Flyers fan growing up, Max Domi, who now plays for the Canadiens, said in an October 2015 story by Sean Leahy on Yahoo! Sports. My dad is definitely not.

While Domi was always disliked in Philly because he often stirred the pot, he cemented his villain status with the fiasco in the penalty box.

Ironically, the city probably would have been drawn to a player like Domi if he was on the good side because the 5-foot-10, 213-pounder played bigger than his size and never backed down.

"Philly, I used to love playing there, I really did," Domi said on theSpittin Chiclets podcast. "The fans, they loved me but they hated me. I still get fan mail from Flyers fans: 'We miss you, the games aren't the same anymore.'"

Still, nobody will forget the agitator on the ice and in the box that March night during 2001.

Domi didn't just anger Philly throughout his career; he messed with its own. That's a true villain in this town.

The incredible weight loss of one of the best props in rugby history – Rugby OnSlaught

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

We only just found out today about the incredible weight loss journey off Matt Dunning. A prop with one of the best flair games in the game.

Matt Dunning was a prop for the Waratahs back in the early noughties.

He was known to be a rugby player who was a back in a Props body.

The Prop made a name for himself for somehow managing to make incredible breaks despite his size

The video below shows that.

When we saw this video we were amazed to see a screenshot from a few years ago showing his incredible weightloss journey.

It turns out that Dunning the former Wallaby was extremely unhappy about the size that he was, and he wanted to do something about it.

When he was a prop for the Wallabies Matt Dunning weighed 130kg and was constantly mocked for his tubby frame.

But since retiring from rugby union the 35-year-old has lost a staggering 40kg, dropping from 25 per cent body fat to just 11 per cent in six months. What an incredible weight loss.

We found a video which shows just how much weight the former prop has lost and its quite shocking to see!

Speaking to Mail Online, he said

When I played footy I received a lot negative media stuff, but mate I havent seen one negative comment.

You think if you take photos of yourself you seem a bit up yourself but everythings been really positive.

Dunning, who played for the NSW Waratahs and the Perth Western Force before he was forced to retire in 2011 due to a neck injury, says he lost the weight by cutting down on food.

While losing weight he drank two high-nutrient shakes and ate just one meal a day, and would do cleanses four days a month.

This is brilliant to see from this.

Weight loss: Man lost a huge 21st with this plan – after fears hed be lucky to see 40 – Express

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

I was worried that if my mum did pass away, I wouldnt be able to be one of her pallbearers, which was heart-breaking, Phil revealed. She died in October 2017, by which point Id lost 5st. I know shed be really proud if she could see me now more than 21st lighter.

Phil joined his local Slimming World club in July 2017, having been encouraged by a friend who also went with him.

I even contacted the Consultant in advance to check the scales would be able to weigh me, Phil recalled.

The last time Id weighed myself was at the hospital, where I had to stand on two sets of scales just to get a reading. My Consultant assured me that there was nothing to worry about and she was right everyone was so supportive and friendly and although it was a shock to see the scales hit 37st, for the first time thanks to her kindness and hearing about Slimming Worlds plan I felt like I could do something about it.

The Slimming World plan allows dieters to eat hearty but healthy meals, something Phil found much easier to stick to compared to his previous attempts at intermittent fasting and portion restriction.

He described joining the club and learning about the plan as a lightbulb moment as he realised he didnt have to starve himself to lose weight.

I was a bit vegetable-phobic when I first joined but now one of my favourite dishes is a Mediterranean vegetable pasta and I even tend to an allotment with a veggie patch! Phil shared.

By following the clubs Food Optimising eating plan, Phil halved his bodyweight, going from 37 stone to just over 15 stone in only three years.

He praised the group environment for his astonishing results, saying: The group environment really helped me too because for the first time I was surrounded by people who knew how it felt to struggle with their weight. Checking in with everyone each week has been invaluable and I have learned so much from everyone. I attend virtually now that were in lockdown, which is really great and helps keep me on track. I couldnt be without them.

However, Phil didnt just overhaul his entire diet - he also became more active after shedding the pounds.

After 30 years away from it, Phil is now cycles regularly.

Years of being overweight really took its toll on my knees and I used to take medication daily to manage the pain, revealed Phil.

I will still need a knee replacement at some stage, but I have certainly delayed the inevitable and made the operation itself more likely to be successful. When I was 37st, my doctor told me it was too risky for me to have surgery because calculating the anaesthetic needed for someone my size was so tricky.

Now Ive started cycling again, I can walk without getting out of breath and I also enjoy yoga. Its a completely different life to the one I had before one that is full of opportunities, friends and adventures.

The weight loss has completely changed his life - and may have even saved it. Phil was recently ill with what was thought to be COVID-19, and though it still affected him badly hes not sure that he would have been so lucky to recover had he been at his original weight.

Obesity is a known risk factor in coronavirus deaths, with overweight patients more likely to die from the disease.

I dread to think how my body would have responded. It was a timely reminder of how important my health is, Phil said of his recent illness.

However, Phil is now fighting fit, and even found love after transforming his body with the plan, meeting partner Nicole on an online dating app.

Since meeting weve moved in together, swam in the Mediterranean Sea, been on a walking tour of Berlin and Ive learned to drive. There are lots more adventures we want to tick off the list and for the first time in a long time, Im excited about the future.

Since the temporary suspension of its 19,000 community groups, Slimming World has launched a virtual weight loss service to continue to support people to stay on track with healthy habits and lose weight at this time.

Heres an example of what Phil used to eat, compared to his daily food menu now that hes on the plan:

Breakfast: Sausage roll or a sausage bap with cheese and ketchup. Full fat latte or cappuccino with added sugar.

Lunch: Tinned soup with 3-4 rounds of white bread, large bag of crisps and a chocolate bar or chips with cheese and lots of sauce.

Dinner: Large supermarket pizza, crisps and chocolate or a Chinese or Indian takeaway.

Evening: Multipack crisps, jumbo bar of chocolate, family bag of sweets, doughnuts, biscuits.

Breakfast: Bran flakes or reduced-sugar muesli with fat-free yogurt and frozen berries. Americano coffee with skimmed milk.

Mid-morning: Fruit.

Lunch: Leftovers from a home-cooked meal the night before or a pasta dish and some fruit.

Dinner: Chicken or salmon with Slimming World chips or potatoes with lots of fresh veg from the allotment.

Evening: A Slimming World Hi-Fi bar.

Protein Powder with Coffee: Benefits, Downsides, and How To – Healthline

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:47 pm

Adding protein to coffee is one of the latest wellness trends.

While it may sound like an odd combination, many people claim that it boosts weight loss and improves workouts.

This article examines the science to tell you whether you should add protein powder to your coffee.

Studies indicate that adding protein to your coffee may provide several benefits, as enthusiasts claim.

Combining protein powder with coffee may enhance your workouts.

Coffee is rich in caffeine, a natural stimulant that can improve your muscles contractions and resistance to fatigue when you consume it within 60 minutes before exercising (1, 2).

Likewise, protein powder provides your muscles with the building blocks they need to recover from exercise, grow, and become stronger (3, 4).

Research suggests that people who regularly perform resistance exercise benefit most from ingesting 0.71 gram of protein per pound (1.62.2 grams per kg) of body weight (4, 5, 6).

That said, taking protein immediately before a workout appears less crucial than once thought. Most people can meet their daily protein needs without the use of supplements (5, 7).

Nonetheless, adding protein to coffee remains a convenient way to load up on both caffeine and protein.

One commonly cited benefit to adding protein to coffee is that it helps people who regularly skip breakfast meet their daily protein requirements.

Protein is likely best eaten over several periods throughout the day, especially if youre physically active and hoping to build muscle or increase strength (8).

Thats because your body may only be able to use around 0.2 grams of protein per pound (0.5 grams per kg) of body weight at a time for muscle-building purposes (8).

For someone who weighs 154 pounds (70 kg), this amounts to around 35 grams of protein per meal. Anything above this amount is either used to make energy or excreted through your urine (8).

Thus, adding protein to coffee may help you spread out your protein intake more effectively.

All the same, a complete and balanced breakfast is an even better strategy, as it helps fulfill your daily requirements for vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients, in addition to protein.

Adding protein powder to your coffee may aid weight loss.

Given that protein reduces hunger and promotes feelings of fullness, adding it to your coffee may help keep you fuller for longer and possibly slash the number of calories you eat later in the day (9).

Protein may also provide a slight metabolism boost because it requires your body to burn more calories to break it down than do carbs or fats (10).

Finally, proper protein intake may help you maintain muscle mass while losing body fat (11, 12).

Caffeine has potential weight loss benefits of its own. For instance, research suggests that it boosts your metabolism, lowers levels of hunger hormones, and raises levels of fullness hormones (13).

That said, drinking regular coffee with a protein-rich breakfast is likely to provide the same benefits.

Stirring protein powder into coffee may provide several benefits, such as improved weight loss and workout performance. It may also help you meet your daily protein needs.

Although coffee with protein powder may benefit those who dont typically eat or drink anything in the morning, it doesnt likely help those who eat a balanced, protein-rich breakfast alongside regular coffee.

Protein powders remain inferior to whole foods because whole sources of protein contain additional vitamins, minerals, and beneficial compounds seldom found in protein powders.

Moreover, protein powders are sometimes laden with sugar, fillers, artificial sweeteners, and other additives. They also risk being contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and other ingredients not listed on the label (14).

Therefore, it remains best to opt for whole, protein-rich foods over protein powders whenever possible.

Adding protein to coffee is inferior to eating a protein-rich breakfast alongside coffee. Protein powders not only may be high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, and additives but also risk being contaminated with harmful compounds.

Adding protein to your coffee is a simple process as long as you keep a few pointers in mind.

Protein powders can clump, especially when added to hot beverages like coffee. To prevent this, try adding only a little protein powder at a time while stirring continuously.

You can also use a blender, but to prevent it from cracking, make sure to remove the plastic insert on the lid to allow steam to escape. An immersion blender also works, but its best to avoid blenders that dont allow steam to escape.

Alternatively, cool down your coffee with creamer, milk, or ice beforehand, or simply add protein powder to chilled coffee.

Protein powder is most easily added to cold coffee. If you wish to add it to hot coffee, use a blender or stir continuously to prevent clumps from forming.

Many health enthusiasts promote adding protein powder to your morning coffee.

Doing so may be a convenient way for people who regularly skip breakfast to get enough protein. Whats more, the combination of protein and caffeine may help you shed weight and amp up your workouts.

However, eating a balanced breakfast with your cup of joe remains a superior, more nutritious way to achieve these same benefits and with many fewer downsides.

Straight facts about Splenda and its affect on health – Insider – INSIDER

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:45 pm

Many people turn to artificial sweeteners in an attempt to cut calories from sugar out of their diets and lose weight. However, some of these sugar substitutes have been controversial for decades.

One sweetener, Splenda, has even raised concerns for causing cancer, though there's no substantial proof. Here's what researchers have actually found so far on Splenda's health effects.

Splenda is one of the brand names for sucralose-based artificial sweeteners. Other brands include Sukrana, SucraPlus, and Nevella. Sucralose was first approved as a general-purpose sweetener in 1999 by the FDA.

The Splenda-making process starts with sucrose, also known as table sugar. The chemical structure of sucrose is then altered into a new compound called sucralose, from which the human body cannot absorb any calories.

This result is an artificial sweetener that is extremely sweet 600 times sweeter than regular sugar and low-cal. One packet of Splenda contains 3.36 calories.

The FDA says that sucralose is safe capping the recommended maximum intake at 23 packets a day, or about the equivalent of 5.5 teaspoons. However, some nutritionists disagree with the FDA.

Danica Cowan, MS, RD, a dietitian at UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, strongly advises against using any chemical artificial sweeteners, not just Splenda. Cowan says that until we have unequivocal proof that chemically-altered artificial sweeteners are not harmful, everyone should err on the side of caution.

In fact, most of the research points to potentially adverse health effects. Here's what some of the research has uncovered, so far:

A study published in Cell Metabolism in 2020 found that consistently eating sucralose and carbs together for 10 consecutive days decreased insulin sensitivity in otherwise healthy adults. In other words, it's possible that consuming too much sucralose-based sweeteners may cause you to have higher blood sugar, which can increase your risk of prediabetes. However, this research is relatively new, and there are no other studies to confirm its conclusions.

There's talk that artificial sweeteners may have a negative impact on gut health. However, so far, the only studies on this effect have been done in animals and there's no proof that the results apply to human health.

That said, artificial sweeteners including mannitol and sorbitol have been shown to cause GI issues like diarrhea. Whether this has any long-term adverse effects on gut health, though, is unknown.

In 2016, a study published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health made media headlines for its supposed link between Splenda and an increased risk of cancer.

However, the study was performed in mice and the researchers reportedly fed the rodents at least 12 times more sucralose than what's recommended for human consumption. The mice were eating this amount every day until they died.

Later in 2016, a different group of researchers published an extensive review in the Journal Nutrition and Cancer concluding that, "sucralose does not demonstrate carcinogenic activity even when exposure levels are several orders of magnitude greater than the range of anticipated daily ingestion levels."

Artificial sweeteners, in general, can actually backfire for those who are trying to lose weight. According to a 2010 mini-review, artificial sweeteners affect the brain differently than true sugar, leaving it less satisfied which can spark additional sweet cravings.

When we eat sugar, reward pathways in our brain are activated, and they release hormones that make us feel good, which explains why we love sweets so much. On the other hand, when artificial sweeteners are consumed, those same pathways are activated only partially since they don't contain calories, meaning they can't be broken down into energy for the body. This can lead you to crave more, eat more, and possibly gain weight.

There is a deficit of studies that investigate the long-term health effects of Splenda consumption. From what researchers have found, Splenda isn't horrible for you, but it also isn't necessarily good for you, either. And it definitely doesn't add any nutritional value.

Cowan says that if you want to reduce your sugar intake, then start by cutting back slowly and steadily. "If you just begin to cut back on sugar and sweets in general, your body adjusts. Your taste buds adjust, and you crave sweets less and I think that's very beneficial."

If you have intense sugar cravings and aren't ready to cut back on traditional sweets just yet, Cowan says artificial sweeteners can have a place. But she suggests trying healthier sugar substitutes instead of Splenda. She highly recommends using Stevia or Monk Fruit, which are more natural than Splenda. Both of these sweeteners come from plants and are not artificially derived from other substances or chemicals.

Lastly, if you're trying to lose weight, take a hard look at your overall diet. Weight loss and health are about way more than just using an artificial sweetener or not. Cowan recommends focusing on having a healthy balanced diet of whole foods, and avoiding highly-processed foods.

State rules on PPE will prevent people from seeing relatives in long-term care sites | News, Sports, Jobs – Fort Dodge Messenger

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:45 pm

Anyone paying attention to the news lately has seen both heartwarming and heartbreaking stories about residents in Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities, their homes, and their families. In our best efforts to protect LTC residents from COVID-19, we have created another health risk. Our safety measures to restrict visitation and communal activities the past three months have negatively impacted residents physical, mental and emotional health. In fact, residents have documented physical, mental and emotional decline due to the social distancing and isolation measures in place to keep them safe. Some residents have experienced weight loss as they have no socialization while eating.

I have been an infection preventionist in a hospital setting, currently working in an Adult Day Services program connected with a long-term care community. I am also an independent living resident on a continuing care campus. I am writing in support of both keeping our residents in LTC settings, many of whom are my friends, not only physically healthy and safe but also mentally and emotionally healthy. With everything going on in our country right now, LTC residents feel as though they no longer have rights and have been imprisoned in the name of safety. We have lost sight that this is their home and that they have a voice. They cannot have in-person visits with their families and are isolated from their friends in the place they call home.

I have to admit that I too have felt some frustration. In order to keep fellow residents in assisted living and LTC safe on campus, I have needed to limit my daily comings and goings off campus. Leaving campus is limited to trips for groceries, medications, and a drive in the country or a safely distanced walk to a park.

I, along with everyone on our campus, have been watching the rest of the state reopening on the news and have been looking forward to the states easing of restrictions in LTC so we too can socially distance on a visit with our families and friends and have limited communal dining. These small acts do wonders for residents well being.

Our campus has had one resident test positive for COVID-19, and that resident has recovered and returned to their neighborhood. If all goes as planned, we hope to meet the states requirements to progress to Phase 2 of the reopening plan on July 1. However, that progress is in jeopardy because our campus cannot obtain the amount of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to meet the additional precautions the state requires us to have in place. Having a background in infection prevention and employee health, I fully understand the need for PPE as it relates to transmission-based precautions. However, the state is requiring LTC facilities to go beyond precautions utilized in the past and to do so without any extended use or reuse of PPE.

Precautions should be based upon known or suspected likelihood of transmitting pathogens. With additional precautions applied to all residents, regardless of symptoms or their history of potential of exposure, it seems unnecessary and will require unlimited amounts of PPE that would be better saved for conventional situations.

Unless the state helps us find considerably more medical-grade PPE or addresses their PPE requirements for reopening, our campus, and Id venture to say almost every LTC in the state, will not be able to move to Phase 2. This means our vulnerable residents will continue to have limited interactions with people or, in their words, be locked away in jail. This is not what they signed up for, not even in the name of safety. Further, how can we ethically reopen the rest of the state while forgetting about our greatest generation?

Linda Opheim, RN, CIC, is a nurse at Schmoker Adult Day-Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.

We need to talk about the 1994 Disney film ‘Blank Check’ – Yahoo Lifestyle

In 1994, Walt Disney Pictures produced a PG comedy called

Blank Check about an 11-year-old boy who gets into a bike

Though the movie is generally fun in a

classic 90s fashion, with tons of hijinks

The 11-year-old main characters

love interest is an adult woman.

The 1994 film has recently found

its available to stream on Disney Plus.

On TikTok, user therjpowell recorded a

Though the entire concept of an 11-year-old falling in

calls out one problematic scene in particular in his video: .

the one where the 11-year-old and

The Best Toners to Smooth and Brighten Every Skin Type – Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: June 26, 2020 at 7:45 pm

Face toners have come a long way since the old-school dehydrating astringents made to control oily skin. Toners are water-based or water-alcohol based solutions or mixtures, says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab chemist Danusia Wnek, but "there are now formulas that are alcohol- and astringent-free and can be less drying, she says.

This new generation of toners are often labeled as essences, tonics, waters, or solutions. These versions contain treatment ingredients similar to serums and moisturizers, so theyre gentler, says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

The goal of a toner is to remove any excess residue from cleansing and prep the skin for other skincare products," says Wnek. Toners are traditionally applied on clean, dry skin using fingers, cotton, or a cloth after face cleansing and before other leave-on skincare treatments like serums and moisturizers. Incorporate a toner into your skincare routine if you want additional complexion-purifying or treatment benefits or want to swap out heavier skincare formulas for lighter liquids in warmer months.

When shopping for a toner, look for formulations tailored to your complexion type or primary skin concern or goal. Here are Wnek's suggetions:

Here, the best face toners you can buy for all skin types, from oily and acne-prone to combination, dry and sensitive, for hyperpigmentation and more, according to GH Beauty Lab scientists and experts.
