Protein-rich diet for weight loss: Potatoes are not as bad as you think – TheHealthSite

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

Several studies suggest that increasing your protein intake can help in weight loss and increasing muscle mass and strength. Eating protein-rich foods can make you feel full and satisfied for hours after eating. Protein also help boost metabolism and suppress hunger by reducing the levels of hunger hormone, and thus accelerate weight loss process. Because of these reasons, many dieticians recommend protein-rich diet for losing extra kilos and preventing muscle loss during weight loss. When we say protein-rich foods, you may think about dairy products, chicken, eggs, etc. No doubt these are great sources of proteins, but have you ever thought of potatoes or aloo? Potatoes are usually considered an enemy by those who are on a weight loss journey. But researchers from the McMaster University say potatoes can promote weight loss and help build muscle strength. According to them, potatoes, which is usually regarded as a starchy vegetable, contain high-quality proteins, though in small quantity. The findings of their study appeared in the journal Nutrients. Also Read - COVID-19: How to wear a face mask in the hot summer months

For their study, the McMaster University researchers roped in young women in their early twenties. While one group consumed diets containing protein at the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 0.8 grams of protein/per kilogram/day, the other group was given additional potato protein, doubling their intake of the RDA to 1.6g/kg/d. Surprisingly, women who consumed the additional potato protein showed increased rate of protein growth in muscles. Also Read - COVID-19 Live Updates: Cases in India surge to 4,56,183 as death toll reaches 14,476

This shows that the recommended daily allowance of protein is inadequate to support maintenance of muscle in these young women, the researchers said. Also, the researchers noted that their study provides evidence that the quality of proteins from plants can support muscle.

Today, many people are moving away from animal-based proteins and switching to plant-based substitutes. If youre one of them, potatoes can be an excellent choice.

Most people consider potato as a carb laden food, which can make us gain weight. But this is not entirely true. In fact, potatoes can prove to be very beneficial to your health, if eaten the right way and pay attention to the calorie count. Wait! Dont open that packet of chips. Were talking about the vegetable without the oil.

Potatoes are not inherently bad, but when they are smothered in cheese, mashed with mayo and deep-fried, it loses its good properties. Here are some benefits of potatoes and how to include a healthier preparation of potatoes in your diet:

Next time you cook potatoes, dont peel off the skin. The potato skin is rich in potassium, which can help in lowering blood pressure. Bake the vegetable to get the maximum benefit. Experts say one large potato baked with the skin on, contains at least 1,600mg of potassium, which is nearly half the recommended amount for a day.

Potatoes are also a good source of vitamin C, which is essential for your immunity system. One medium-sized potato can provide 45 per cent of your daily requirement of vitamin C. Studies have also shown that having adequate amounts of vitamin C can stop the secretion of stress hormones and keep stress away.

Thanks to the fibre content in its skin, potatoes can help in keeping your heart healthy and boosts digestion. Contrary to what many people think, potatoes are fat-free, sodium-free and low in sugar. For your information one medium-sized potato contains just about 1g of sugar. But if youre going to fry the vegetable, and add loads of unhealthy fat and salt, it will turn into a bad diet food.

Tom Kerridge on love, weight loss and the restaurant crisis: ‘There will be some horrific casualties’ – The Guardian

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

The mix maybe hasnt risen enough, or the tin is too big, says Tom Kerridge. Is it a wholemeal flour?

Its not every day that an affable Michelin-starred celebrity chef drops by, even if it is via the power of Zoom, and it just happens to coincide with my lockdown loaf emerging from the oven. Of course, I share the magic moment. Its not my proudest attempt at sourdough todays is under-risen, possibly overdone, not entirely un-brick-like.

It looks quite dense, Id be looking for something a bit more Kerridge, so chatty on the telly, suddenly seems lost for words. It looks quite rustic, he says, finally, before adding: And bread is supposed to be rustic.

Correctly rustic Ill take that. But this isnt about me and my fabulous sourdough; its about him, his restaurants, other restaurants and what future they have, if any.

As well as the television and the books, Kerridge, 46, has restaurants in London and Manchester, plus a brace of seriously foody pubs in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The affluent Thameside town is also where he lives with his wife, sculptor Beth Cullen-Kerridge, and their four-and-a-half-year-old son, where his offices are and where he Zooms from today. He is wearing a grey sweatshirt and looks healthy and quite trim, with no extra lockdown weight.

Kerridge hasnt always been trim. A bacchanalian lifestyle (including sinking 15 pints a night) took its toll until, approaching 40 and weighing 30 stone, he realised he would be pushing daisies before he reached 50 unless he got a grip on his life. So thats what he did. Over a couple of years he offloaded about 12 stone via his own recipe for weight loss that involves a low-carb diet, loads of exercise and abstinence. Tom Kerridges dopamine diet he called it in his 2017 book.

I havent been able to get to the gym, obviously, and I havent got any free weights at home, so Ive lost a load of strength but Ive taken up running, he tells me. I hate every minute of it. Im not built for running but I try to do 20, maybe 25k a week. I make myself do it and I feel better when its done.

What about the diet? The deep-fat fryer did come out last night, he admits, to make fish and chips with his son. I didnt eat the chips. I did have bits of the fish but it was a very thin batter.

And the dopamine levels? Up and down. He has enjoyed time with the family, cooking, tea at home, family bike rides. But there is a really dark cloud floating above it. Theres something not quite right, he says. Its like being on a really shit holiday.

Working in a restaurant is more than a job. It defines you as a person, like being an artist or an actor or a sportsman, he says. Take that away and a big part of you has gone. He filled some of the void by setting up a charitable fund, making meals to serve NHS staff in local hospitals. It has been helpful, not just for the frontline health workers who have been able to sit down for five minutes and eat something that didnt come from a vending machine, but also for the members of his own staff who volunteered. It allowed them to feel they are still doing something proactive, cooking every day. I know we were out on Thursday nights clapping, but this felt like a physical opportunity to give somebody something back.

Restaurants and pubs, the whole hospitality industry, probably couldnt have been hit any harder. Its been a huge wake-up call, he says. Everyone knows the story that two out of three restaurants dont make it through the first year after opening. But everyone sees a busy restaurant and assumes its making loads of money. Most busy restaurants are just about surviving. If youre making 10% net profit on turnover youre seen to be doing good; 10% net profit is such a small margin.

Kerridge is reasonably happy with the government so far, from a business point of view, if not a public health one. His staff are nearly all on furlough, the grants have helped, but the future is massively uncertain. Theres going to be some horrific casualties, close friends, maybe us, who knows? We dont know, until we can open, what the appetite is going to be like for going out.

He says its hard to guess which businesses are most at risk. Theres the restaurant that has to borrow from the government just to reopen, and will then have to make a profit to repay the loan. Or those that had just opened when this happened; or even if you were an incredibly successful restaurateur but had just borrowed to open another restaurant and now cant fund the borrowing. Size is no guarantee of survival; Kerridge points to the report that Pret a Manger was looking to negotiate rents. If theyre having to do it, that means the little guys will have to. Each individual business will have its own sense of vulnerability, why and how it can come through this or why it cant.

If this all sounds incredibly gloomy, Kerridge himself doesnt. Yes, there are black clouds, worries, uncertainties, difficult decisions, but he admits that there is a part of him that finds it quite exciting. Its a little bit like when youre a young chef and youre in service on a Saturday night, theres a sense of fear. Fear about whether youre going to be able to make it through? It is kind of like that, just a bit more serious with a lot more money involved.

But restaurants arent all about money. It runs deeper, its about love and passion and connection to human beings. Youre in the hospitality industry because you like being with other people. There is something very special about working in restaurants, youre operating to give people a great time.

How exactly they are going to operate in order to give people a great time still isnt clear. Kerridge is hoping to be opening in some form as soon as he can, but the guidelines and protocol arent in place no one knows if its going to have to be 1 metre or 2 metres between tables, so he doesnt know what his capacity is going to be, or even whether diners will be ready to come out. How many staff hes going to be employing will ultimately depend on these things.

His pubs will have wooden screens between tables, which he says will be in line with them, as he doesnt want them to feel too different. Eating out is about enjoying yourself, he says. If you make it just about the process, in a sterile and uninviting environment, you may as well just go to a motorway service station.

But behind the scenes it will be more clinical: temperature checks for staff when they come in, questionnaires about symptoms. They need to feel safe, they need to feel cared for, they need to feel loved.

Care, love, social connectivity, these are words that come up a lot when Kerridge talks about his work and the people he works with. He gets very cross when they get referred to in parliament as low-skilled workers. If they think its low-skilled, I wouldnt mind seeing Boris Johnson or Priti Patel come in working the sauce section of the Hand and Flowers. Come and cook 70 perfect pieces of meat on a Saturday night and then tell me its low-skilled.

Surely the question should be: Why is food so cheap? Why can you buy a packet of chicken breasts for 1.99?

If coronavirus has shone a light on the vulnerability of the hospitality sector, it has also highlighted its importance, not least because of the millions of jobs involved in the industry and those connected to it. Hospitality is built on farming and producers, without us open these guys are losing so much. The knock-on effect is massive.

He thinks there will be more recognition of the process and people involved from the farmers to waiters and that good food costs money. When people ask why food is so expensive, surely the question should be: Why is food so cheap? Why can you buy a packet of chicken breasts for 1.99?

No chlorinated chicken at the Hand and Flowers then? Absolutely not, were going to be going the other way. I want to be even closer to the producer, the guy looking after the chickens. I want to be even more connected to the people we get things from, to a human being rather than a process.

There they are again, those human connections. We want and need to be out, saying hello to each other, having that connection. So the hospitality industry will survive, its not going to just shut. There will be some harsh realities and casualties, whether its restaurant groups or individual staff, there will be some very big bumps along the way. But we are a fantastic, forward-thinking, eclectic, diverse, rich, exciting industry that will adapt and come through the other side.

Taking a positive stance then, but he they, the industry need to, he says. Dont forget, this is a man who found positives in the burnt brick that came from my oven.

Nigella Lawson weight loss: Diet plan TV chef used to shrink 2 dress sizes and lose 2st – Express

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

Nigella's favourite is yoga.

She told GoodHousing Keeping in an interview: "I do yoga three times a week. I have to do something I enjoy, otherwise I wouldnt do it."

She suggested the exercise is more appropriate for her age.

Nigella said: "The older I get the more I realise I have got to do lots of stretching. So even if Im not doing yoga, I make myself do lots of stretching.

Not only that, but the less meat a person ate the lower their body mass index (BMI) was likely to be.

What is more, the sort of animal product eaten is linked to higher BMI.

For example eating meat is linked more often to higher BMI than eating eggs, cheese and dairy.

The study found: "A person with a 1.2 point lower BMI on average either completely avoids certain animal products, such as the primary ones, and is on a vegetarian diet. Or she continues to eat meat and fish, but less often."

The best thing about making shakes is that you can use any fruit as per your taste preference, but at the same time adding fruits that can blend well without causing any reaction are the ones you should add to your shakes and smoothies. Kourtney Kardashian-Approved Tips to Lose the Quarantine 15: Eat Whole Foods and More – Us Weekly

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

Kourtney Kardashian was honest about her quarantine weight gain amid the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year, and now she wants to help those who might be looking to shed some extra pounds.

The 41-year-olds Poosh website published a list of tips to bounce back from the quarantine 15 on Tuesday, June 23. The pointers, which are from holistic nutritionist Shauna Faulisi, include advice on how to properly take care of yourself while still eating healthily and being active.

I know it seems daunting to get out of habits that helped you feel safe and comfortable during one of the most uncomfortable and unknown times in our lifetime, Faulisi explained. But try to shift your perspective and realize that putting on weight when your cortisol is high is your bodys natural way of protecting itself.

The celebrity wellness chef added: Eating can be a way to self-soothe, while also being a way to connect and interact with others in person, or on Zoom.

One of her tips involves not being too hard on yourself if youve put on a few pounds during this stressful time. In fact, Faulisi advised looking at the weight as something that was necessary in the moment.

Whenever its time for me to take off a few pounds after a stressful or unhappy period in my life, I often bid farewell to the weight and thank it for keeping me safe. I tell my body I no longer need the extra weight because I am safe and happy and ready to step into a new phase, she wrote. This kind, silly, yet powerful act immediately shifts the experience of rigid weight loss to a kind and centered routine that will lead me to be more intuitive with my eating habits.

When Instagram users asked Kardashian if she was pregnant after she posted a series of bikini photos to the social media platform in May 2020, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star was honest about her quarantine weight gain while still being kind to herself.

This is me when I have a few extra pounds on, and I actually love it, Kardashian responded while shooting down any pregnancy rumors. I have given birth three amazing times and this is the shape of my body.

The California native, who also confessed to eating 4 cakes in 2 weeks while in quarantine, referenced her epic clapback about a week later during a YouTube discussion with members of her Poosh team. I commented back and said, This is the shape of my body. I gained a few pounds over this quarantine time, and I love my body and Im proud of my shape and Im obviously posting it and this is the shape of my body, she explained at the time. I dont think I look pregnant at all.

Can lychees help with weight loss? Here’s the 101 – The Express Tribune

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

When it comes to weight loss, there are many foods that can help but there is none as helpful as lychee

Were smack in the middle of summer and the heat feels like it is at an all-time high. The only way one can beat it is by taking care of their health, making sure to stay as cool and hydrated for as long as they can.

Thanks to Mother Nature, there are many healthy foods that you can eat these days to do that, though. Among them is the delectable lychee which, besides packing your diet with essential nutrients, can also help with weight loss.

So, if you have yet to indulge in this sweet little fruit, here are some reasons, as compiled from The Indian Express, as to why you need to do so at the earliest.

When it comes to weight loss, there are many foods that can help but there is none as helpful as lychee. It is rich in fibre, which spurs weight loss by getting rid of toxins from the body. Also, the fruit is good to taste with a low-calorie count.

So, whenever you feel like eating something refreshing, you can bite into lychee without feeling the same guilt as you do when chugging down on mangoes, for instance.

Being rich in fibre, lychees aid the process of digestion. One of the biggest roadblocks for people who are trying to lose weight can be constipation but this fruit can take care of that. It can ease out bowel movement and retain essential nutrients in the body, making it a win-win situation.

Also, since lychees are packed with so many essential nutrients, they can help keep your immune system strong, which is the need of the hour these days. A healthy immune system can make sure the body functions in a healthy manner, and that includes maintaining healthy body weight, too.

Last but not the least, lychees are believed to regulate the blood pressure, too. They are rich in potassium and low in sodium, which works best when you are trying to balance your blood pressure. It makes you feel more energised and willing to take up different physical activities, thereby promoting weight loss.

Remember that besides eating well, you also need to make sure that you are physically active and are leading a healthy lifestyle if you are serious about keeping your weight in check.

Have something to add to the story? Share it in the comments below.

What Marc Gasol’s transformation actually means for the Toronto Raptors – Raptors Rapture

Posted: June 24, 2020 at 2:45 am

Toronto Raptors - Marc Gasol (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

We've seen the buzz surrounding the Gasol weight loss, but what does it actually mean? Seeing Marc Gasol in this shape can't help but remind me of his 2014-2015 season. The weight loss saw Gasol be much quicker, more switchable on defense and saw him contribute on offense so much more. All things the Toronto Raptors are not that familiar with.

But at the age of 35, what do we really expect from a slimmer Gasol.

Marc Gasol has two clear tasks on offense already which are clear cut. One of them is being a distributor in the post, and the second one is stretching the floor. There are other things he can dosuch as setting picks but the two skills mentioned above are the ones exploited the most by coach Nick Nurse.

If needed, it wouldn't be surprising to give Gasol a bigger offensive presence. Perhaps more post-ups and taking advantage of teams with no real center --- Boston Celtics come to mind. But other than that, I still expect Nurse to use Gasol the same way as he was before with just slightly more plays for Gasol.

Traditional centers have become a thing of a past. The weight loss makes sense because most teams don't run a traditional 5 as they used too. 5's are usually stretch bigs, power forwards, or teams just plug in a tall guy who can shoot, all things that make Gasol's weight loss a good thing. Switchability on to smaller and quicker guys is necessary for this day and age.

There is only one problem. Joel Embiid is still in the eastern conference. The only traditional dominant big that has an arsenal of post moves at his disposal. Gasol's bulkiness is what kept him from doing so well against Embiid. Embiid couldn't move him whatsoever in post-up situations, thus leading to a zero point night for the big fella.

It's still possible that Gasol can fully hold his own if they matchup against the Sixers, I just think it's much less likely. Embiid is the best post-up big in the last decade. This year alone, if Embiid is in a post up position, 76.3 percent of the time it has resulted in a point. No one even comes close to such a high conversion rate --- the second closest is LaMarcus Aldridge at 58.8 percent, with the same number of posts up per game, 9.7.

So although I cannot wait to see a leaner Marc Gasol for the Toronto Raptors, I can wait to see it against the Philadelphia 76ers.

My 600-lb Life is a reality television series that follows morbidly obese individuals, weighing around 600 pounds, as they decide to take charge of their lives with the help of Iranian-American Houston-based surgeon, Younan Nowzaradan AKA Dr. Now. Over eight seasons, it has showcased transformation journeys of several patients, wherein they work towards losing weight to achieve a healthy body goal.

Some gave up along the way, while some were determined enough to stick to their respective diet plans and managed to reach their goals. Although every patient who has ever been a part of the show deserves a round of applause for their efforts, heres a list of the most shocking and inspiring success stories (in no particular order) of the patients from My 600-lb Life who are now enjoying their new lease at life!

Back in 2012, Melissa D. Morris appeared on the debut season of the reality series weighing a staggering 653 lbs. Melissa and her husband Chris Morris hoped to start a family but were unable to because of her excessive weight.

The show documented how Melissa strived to lose weight and after following a strict diet and instructions, she managed to drop 447 lbs in her first run. Melissa returned for the follow-up spin-off Where Are They Now in which she explained how she continued her journey post-show and lost nearly 500 lbs in total.

Not just that, the Texas-resident is now a mother of three beautiful children Allona, Elijah, and Austin, whom she co-parents with her husband, Chris. Although Melissa has gained some weight back following the birth of her babies she is confident that she will lose it again.

When Susan Farmer appeared on the third season of the show, she weighed 607.6 lbs. From age 17, Susan began using food to escape the traumatic childhood memories inflicted upon her by her abusive father. Susan was scared for her life as she suffered from troubled breathing and walking because of which she had to take baby steps to prevent herself from falling.

Following her gastric bypass surgery, Susan fell prey to Neuropathy and had little to no sensation left in her legs. After some walking sessions in rehab, Susan rediscovered her life. She lost a total of 267 lbs. Since then, Susan hasnt looked back and continues to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Amber was 23-years-old when she made an appearance on the show, weighing 657.6 lbs. Amber has struggled with her weight since she was 5. A chronic anxiety disorder caused her to eat excessively and at the age of 16, Amber was wheelchair-bound because of her weight and couldnt enjoy her life as a normal teenager.

Fearing a premature death at 23, Amber decided it was time to turn her life around. By combining exercises, a strict diet, and a gastric bypass surgery, Amber was able to shed 267 lbs and weighed 390.5 lbs by the end of the show. She has since been taking care of her body and has now turned into an Instagram diva. Her account is packed with tons of selfies that accentuate her changed body and new-found confidence.

At the beginning of her journey, Sarah weighed 642.3 lbs. Her path to a healthy lifestyle was filled with a lot of roadblocks but she overcame it with her determination to lead a normal life and dropped 260 lbs, following Dr. Nows dietary instructions and gastrectomy.

Her weight at the end of the show was 393 lbs. However, Sarah didnt stop there, she lost even more weight after the show, and on the spin-off, she revealed her weight to be 197 lbs. Sarah is now married to Jonah Carpenter and the couple has a baby on the way.

Millas fitness journey is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring stories on the show. The Fayetteville resident came in weighing 751 lbs. She obediently followed all the steps Dr. Now asked her to and managed to lose 153 lbs, which was far away from her goal. However, Milla decided she was not returning to being bed-ridden.

Milla didnt give up and a few weight-loss surgeries, multiple skin removal surgeries and a double knee replacement later, Milla achieved her goal of 155 lbs. On the spin-off titled Where Are They Now? she revealed she has lost a total of 600 lbs, which is the aggregate weight of three or four people and is now healthier and happier than ever.

Christina was 22-years-old when she decided to consult Dr. Now for her deteriorating health issues which had not allowed her to get out of the house for over two years. She weighed 708 lbs and struggled to even get up from the bed. But Christina was hellbent on turning her life around and with the doctors help, she managed to get approved for gastric bypass surgery and lost 183 lbs.

Despite a tumultuous journey, Christina used her second lease at life and lost more weight by resorting to healthier eating options, running marathons, and working out. In 2019, Christina revealed that she has achieved her desired weight of 172 lbs.

Frankston native James Jones tipped the scale at 728 lbs when he appeared on the show. Throughout the show, James showed immense dedication to shedding the extra pounds and managed to lose more than half his weight. At the end of the show, James weighed at 376.7 lbs.

In 2019, James revealed that he didnt give in to temptations and lost more weight after the show by sticking to the right path. In totality, James has lost a staggering 511 lbs, shocking all the naysayers.

When she started her journey in the second season, the Jonesboro resident Paula Jones weighed over 533.8 lbs. She strictly followed all the dietary regulations and workout plans designed for her by Dr. Now and dropped 160 lbs on the show. But wait, her story didnt end there. After the show, Paula continued to follow a healthy diet and hit the gym.

In 2016, Paula inspired a lot of people when she revealed that she has achieved the target goal of 142 lbs. In March 2020, Paula shared another update that stated that despite the shutdown of her gym, Paula hasnt stopped exercising at home. She now takes family walks and kicks balls with her grandsons to make sure she stays healthy.

Nikki weighed 649.7 lbs when she joined the show. She was dejected and depressed about her weight and desperately desired a healthy and normal life. She was even barred at family functions because of her appearance. Dr. Now weaved his magic and gave her customized diet plans, coupled with tips to stay healthy and avoid deviating from the path.

After the gastric bypass surgery, Nikki left the show weighing 443.4 lbs but she carried on the motivation and lost even more. In 2017, Nikki revealed she has lost a total of 450 pounds and is now blissfully married to the love of her life, Marc.
