How Do Olives Affect Your Weight? – Healthline

Posted: May 11, 2020 at 12:46 pm

Olives, a savory Mediterranean fruit, are often cured and eaten whole as a tangy, salty snack. Many people also enjoy them on pizzas and salads or processed into oil or tapenade.

Theyre known for being rich in beneficial fats and are included in the popular Mediterranean diet, so you may wonder whether olives can help you lose weight.

This article explains whether olives aid weight loss.

Olives may affect your weight in a variety of ways.

Olives have a notably low calorie density.

Calorie density is a measure of the number of calories in a food relative to the foods weight or volume (in grams). In general, any food with a calorie density of 4 or more is considered high.

Whole black or green olives have a calorie density of 11.5.

Choosing foods with a low calorie density may boost weight loss, as these foods tend to help you feel full for longer and for fewer calories (1, 2, 3, 4).

Olives also boast healthy unsaturated fats, which differ from saturated and trans fats due to their chemical structure. All fats contain the same amount of calories, but unsaturated fats affect your body beneficially (5, 6).

In particular, replacing carbs and other fats in your diet with monounsaturated fats may reduce inflammation and decrease your risk of heart disease (7, 8, 9, 10).

Monounsaturated fats are found in foods like olives, nuts, avocados, and plant-based oils. Some research links diets high in monounsaturated fats directly to weight loss (11).

A 60-day study in 32 women compared diets high monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats with normal diets. The diet high in monounsaturated fats resulted in weight loss of up to 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg), plus lower fat mass, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (12).

Furthermore, a large review of low calorie diets revealed that high fat eating patterns more often lead to weight loss than low fat ones (13).

The Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes whole foods and seafood while limiting processed foods, may boost weight loss. Olives, olive oil, and other healthy fats are a key component of this diet (14, 15, 16).

Specific studies on this diet suggest that it may result in 14.5 pounds (2.210.1 kg) of weight loss (17, 18).

All the same, other studies dont directly associate it with weight loss (19).

Nevertheless, the Mediterranean diet appears to provide a wide range of health benefits, such as reduced blood pressure and waist circumference (19, 20, 21, 22, 23).

Olives have a low calorie density and are a good source of healthy fats, two factors that may boost weight loss by helping keep you full and replacing less healthy fats in your diet.

The nutritional profile of olives varies based on the type of olive and the curing method. Still, most are low in calories but fairly high in salt and beneficial fats.

The following chart examines the nutrients in 1.2 ounces (34 grams) of black and green olives. This serving provides approximately 10 small- to medium-sized olives (24, 25).

Depending on the size of the fruits, a serving of 10 green or black olives may contain 3595 calories.

Notably, olives are rich in polyphenol antioxidants, which fight harmful compounds called free radicals in your body. Theyre also believed to help reduce your risk of health conditions like diabetes and heart disease (26, 27).

Whole olives are low in calories but rich in polyphenols and healthy fats. They tend to be high in sodium.

Although olives have a low calorie density and may aid weight loss in several ways, its best to enjoy them in moderation due to their high salt content, as well as their overall fat content.

Furthermore, if you dont closely monitor portion sizes, olives calorie count can add up quickly.

To keep your saturated fat intake within the recommended guidelines, its best to limit your intake to 23 ounces (5684 grams) about 1624 small- to medium-sized olives per day.

Though olives may aid weight loss, theyre high in salt and fat and eating too many of them may offset your weight loss success. As such, you should moderate your intake, limiting yourself to a few ounces at most per day.

Olives are a scrumptious snack that boasts healthy fats and polyphenol antioxidants. Their low calorie density means that they may aid weight loss by helping you feel full.

All the same, you should control for portion sizes because olives calories can add up quickly.

This popular Mediterranean fruit makes a great replacement for any processed foods or high calorie snacks in your diet.

Weight loss story: ‘From 105 to 83 kilos, here’s how I answered my body-shamers back’ – Times of India

Posted: May 11, 2020 at 12:46 pm

Losing weight is never an easy battle. There is a lot of negativity which surrounds you and people who try to bring you down. Only when you realize that weight loss is something you do to improve your health and not otherwise, do the real changes happen. 25-year-old Diksha has a similar story to share and her weight loss journey is something which can inspire everyone:

Name: Diksha Singhi

Occupation: Communication Strategist & Body Positive InfluencerAge: 25

Highest weight recorded: 105 kilos

Weight lost: 23 kilos

Duration it took me to lose weight: 1.5 Years

The turning point:

I have always been told that being fat 'doesn't look good' so I was always on the lookout for shortcuts to lose weight so that I would look appealing in front of others.

I started going to the gym when I was in class 3 or 4! Herbal drinks, liquid, fad diets or weight loss methods- I have done it all. Needless to say, nothing worked at all. Even if they did, the change was only temporary. This went on for 23 years when I sought validation from others.

It was only a vacation which put light on to things. Being an enthusiastic person I was, I wanted to go paragliding with my friends. However, it broke my heart when I found out that you need to be less than 90 kilos to be able to take part. I was 15 kilos overweight.

I knew I had to make changes now because I was losing things dear to me. So, while everyone told me to lose weight for the wrong reasons, I finally found the right one- to take care of my health.

My breakfast: Something light like poha, oats, besan chilla.

My lunch: Any green vegetable accompanied with chapaati.

My dinner: Dinners are usually protein-packed- lots of veggies with a source of carb.

I indulge in: Ice-creams, as I try to avoid sugar otherwise.

My workout: I workout for 5-6 days a week, 45 minutes every day, depending on my schedule. I usually do weight training coupled with a few HIIT exercises. Apart from this, I walk as much as I can.

Low-calorie recipes I swear by: Protein Pancakes, Yogurt Parfait, Spinach Zucchini Pasta, Beetroot Pulao

Fitness secrets I unveiled: Losing the first few kgs isn't difficult. It's only after you hit the plateau, further weight loss becomes difficult. This is when you need to be observant and make changes to your diet and lifestyle. Once working out and eating right is a part of you, there is no stopping you. Be consistent. Be flexible. Be disciplined.

Lastly, don't give up. We don't give up on the people we love, so how can you give up on yourself?

How do I stay motivated? As I said, when you change your lifestyle, it becomes easy after a while. On the days I lack motivation, discipline is what gets me going. Once I chart my progress, both physically and mentally, it gets easier to not stop.

How do you ensure you dont lose focus? I would be lying if I say I don't lose focus. I get distracted. But then I wake up and work on myself all over again. It's a continuous process. You learn as you grow.

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? For me, I was always told that I didn't look good and I constantly faced body image issues. Some of the factors which forced me to change were:

-Being body shamed-The constant fear you don't look good.-The constant fear you will never find someone who will love you.-The stares & nasty looks you get when you try losing weight as if you should give up already.-The silent judgement when you pick something healthy to eat.-Being overweight was never about being unhealthy for others, it was always about how you look.

What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? To be healthy, physically and mentally. Preferably be the best version of myself every year and hopefully, even help people change their lifestyle in the journey.

What are the lifestyle changes you made? Not only did I change my lifestyle, but I also shifted from maintaining a negative to an enriching, positive attitude. I keep away from people who constantly try to bring me down, and even those who say "aaj aaj gym skip karle/ ek din khale, kuch nahi hota". (Skip the gym today and eat something, nothing would happen).

Another change I did is correct my sleep schedule. I sleep and wake up on time now.

Lose weight in lockdown: we asked a performance nutritionist for the best weight loss advice for home – T3

Posted: May 10, 2020 at 4:47 pm

It's not easy to lose weight while in lockdown, with many people living a more sedentary lifestyle but eating the same way as they used to. Trying new ways to lose weight fast, like keto diet for weight loss, only works for some people with the rest of population struggling to keep the weight off their torso as the weeks of self-isolation goes on.

Is it impossible to lose weight at home? According to Simon Jurwik, performance nutritionist and commercial director at Bulk Powders, it isn't, not by a long shot. In fact, some simple changes in lifestyle and diet can lead to big results and you don't even have to do bodyweight workouts at home or run for hours on end to shed pounds.

We asked a few questions to Simon about how to maximise lockdown weight loss effectively.

Fitbit Versa 2 | Prices from 199 at Amazon UKThe Versa 2 features advanced cardio tracking as well as the usual steps and sleep stuff, and has Alexa built in. It's also unusually stylish for a Fitbit, and via its excellently presented app and sprawling ecosystem, you can use it as the basis of a complete fitness and diet programme. You can also enter your meals to log calories consumed, so you can have all your dietary data in one place.View Deal

Drinking more water can certainly help

As Simon explains, "to avoid weight gain or to lose weight, you need to maintain calories compared to your energy expenditure to avoid weight gain or in a deficit for weight loss."

If this sounds a bit too complicated, here is what it means: you need to eat less than your maintenance calories in order to lose weight. Maintenance calories are what your body needs to function: on average, it is around 2000 kcal for women and 2500 kcal for men.

"A good way to do this is tracking your calories so you have a better understanding of how much youre eating." Simon adds "If you dont like specifically calorie tracking, then start monitoring your portion sizes. If you need to lose weight, simply reduce the portion sizes."

Calorie tracking can be made easy with apps like MyFitnessPal which can scan barcodes and do the addition for you, no need to calculate carbs/fat/protein manually.

Avoid takeaways if you don't want to get obese

Simon doesn't believe in bad foods although even he wouldn't recommend chowing down on takeaway every morning. His motto is "everything in moderation". "Nonetheless, I would say to limit your consumption of the below whilst in lockdown as they are more calorie dense" he adds.

Promixx MiiXR X7 Performance Nutrition Food Blender 7 Piece Set Black | Buy it for 89.99 at Amazon UKInstead of snacking on chocolate all the time, how about having a smoothie? The Promixx MiiXR X7 is a performance blender with two different mixer heads, two Tritan bottles and two no-leak lids so you can carry your freshly made smoothies with you. The 700w motor pulverises anything you put in this blended in a matter of seconds. The Promixx MiiXR X7 is dishwasher safe but also easy to hand-wash, too, thanks to the ergonomic shape of the bottles.View Deal

Eat all your five-a-day in one go if you wish

When it comes to weight loss, Simon vouches for calorie deficit: "You should try and eat a well balanced diet so you get the right amount of nutrients and minerals." Ideally, you would like to eat your five a day, a mix of fruits and vegetables, to make sure your vitamin levels are topped up.

It's easier than you think to add more greens to your meals: have some tomatoes with your breakfast bacon and eggs, have an apple mid-morning, some asparagus and kale with your lunch, a banana in the afternoon and half an avocado with your tea.

Simon recommends the following food groups to be included in your diet for effective weight loss:

Is keto diet the key to weight loss?

"Ultimately, it comes down to adherence. If you find going lower carb keto diet is easier for you to stick with, then thats a good option. If you prefer intermittent fasting and you find you can stick to it, then thats one to explore" Simon adds.

The key here is sticking to the diet and not jumping from one fad to the other. Once you found the diet you can keep to it doesn't have to be an extreme one either just let your body adjust and eventually, you'll see the results.

The most important thing to remember is that once you get healthy, weight loss will come naturally. It's not about chasing after pounds lost; what's more important is to ease yourself into a healthy lifestyle and a sustainable diet. That will make you lose weight and keep it off, too.

FitBit Aria 2 smart bathroom scale | Buy it for 119.99 at Amazon UKThis clever scaletells you your weight, BMI and body fat percentage which is all a lot of people want. It then reports this to your Fitbit account, so you can monitor your weight trends and use it alongside your Fitbit wearable's daily calorie-burn estimates. Add MyFitnessPal or Fitbit's own dietary features and you can then sync your meal-plans, daily calories consumed and weight goals, if you want.View Deal

Exercising regularly is not necessary for weight loss but it can certainly help

In Simon's opinion, it's important to make a distinction between people who already have a certain muscle mass and people who 'just' want to lose weight: "It depends, if youre aiming to maintain a certain amount of muscle mass, you would need to continue exercising and in particular, resistance training, to hold onto the muscle mass you have."

Cardio has long been used for weight loss, let it be running on treadmills, indoor cycling or indoor rowing. But resistance training is also a great way to burn calories as well as doing HIIT workouts. The best resistance training for weight loss are the ones that use compound exercises, like this full body workout or this two-day push-pull workout.

"Similarly, if youve just completed a diet, which incorporated exercising and calorie restriction, youll need to continue completing the same level of exercise to maintain your weight. If you were to just stop, your calorie expenditure would go down and you will likely gain weight" Simon concludes.

SIXPAD Electric Muscle Stimulation Training Gear | Prices from 175 at Amazon UKSIXPAD training gear won't replace hard work but it can make it more effective. These cordless pads can effectively enhance muscle stimulation and can "help users achieve a 8% improvement in abdominal muscle size after 4 weeks alongside a balanced diet and exercise" or so does SIXPAD claim. A great alternative to midday runs, using the SIXPAD won't make you sweat but will still provide some degree of muscle stimulation.View Deal

Supplement-wise, Bulk Powders has you covered

Understandably, Simon knows a lot about supplements: "supplements can contribute to maintaining/losing weight when incorporated into a balanced diet. For example, if you follow a ketogenic diet, Bulk Powders has several products that are low in carbohydrates such as our Complete Keto Protein Shake, Complete Greens and Electrolyte tablets."

Supplements can come in many shapes and sizes and supplementing your diet doesn't necessarily mean chugging down gallons of protein shakes or weight gainers. Especially if you are following a strict diet, like the vegan diet or the aforementioned keto diet, taking some supplements will be inevitable to support your metabolism.

When using supplements to lose weight, our product Cutting Edge, contains Glucomannan which contributes to weight loss in the context of a calorie restricted diet.

Review of intermittent fasting – Portsmouth Daily Times

Posted: May 10, 2020 at 4:47 pm

My pile of unread medical journals is very high. And its a LIFO pile last in first out. So I was reading the April 30 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine the other day and came to the letters to the editor about a review article that had appeared in the Christmas 2019 issue. Then I fished out of my pile that issue and now Im prepared to report on this interesting review of the new craze in healthy eating intermittent fasting. (1,2)

It has been long known that calorie restriction and weight loss can lead to amazing extensions of the life span of animals. This would be great if it werent impossible to do because being hungry all the time is so hard. The mechanism was felt to be due possibly to a reduction in the damaging free oxygen radicals that occurs when the metabolic calorie burning engine runs hotter.

But now we are coming to understand that intermittent fasting might be even better for you and way more doable and it works in lots of ways that do not involve weight loss or reduced free radical production. For example two studies are mentioned in this review where approximately 100 obese women in each trial were assigned to either a intermittent-fasting regime or a 25% reduction in daily calorie intake. The women in the 2 groups lost the same amount of weight (not that much) during a 6 month period, but those in the intermittent-fasting groups had greater improvement in insulin sensitivity and a larger reduction in waist circumference.

It turns out that the way we eat three meals a day plus snacks and never get hungry was not natural during most of the time humans and most animals have been on earth. When we fast we flip a metabolic switch from using glucose for energy to using fat and ketones for energy. This has a long list of benefits that improves general health and reverses aging and many disease processes that you can read about here.

These authors finally give a prescription for gradually phasing into daily fasting for 16 to 18 hours each day or doing a restricted calorie intake 2 days each week. Children and people on insulin or diabetic meds should consult a physician or dietitian. I calculated that it might be possible for me to skip breakfast since Im not hungry in the morning and then skip or eat very little lunch, together with sleeping 8 hours a night to accomplish 16 to 18 hours a day of fasting.

The notion that breakfast is the most important meal is not supported by evidence.

Weight Loss and Health: 7 Solutions You Do Not Want To Consider – Guardian Nigeria

Posted: May 10, 2020 at 4:44 pm

Top three concerns for a lot of people, especially women have right now is weight gain and how it affects overall wellbeing and health. As the lockdown measures are gradually easing up, you are probably thinking of the best way to lose the extra kgs you added during the 6 weeks lockdown.

While you seek a solution, below are a list of seven methods you should not try:

First on the list is starvation

This is the first thing that crosses the mind is no food, no calories right? Well, that can be counterproductive as the body goes into full survival mode. It stores all the fat it can get and shuts down to conserve energy. It might look like youve lost a bit of weight, but you definitely cant sustain that for long and the health risks are in numbers too. Therefore, rule 101 to losing weight is EATING, by eating I mean eating healthy.

Slimming pills

You probably want to get a doctors prescription before using those. Side effects of this pill range from High blood pressure, diarrhoea, sleeplessness, kidney problems, and liver damage. Not to scare you but ingredients used in some of these pills do not have FDA approval. Coupled with underlying health issues, the pills can cause major health damage. If you most use these, please get a doctors prescription.

Tapeworm Diet

This one here is gross and not popular in this region, however, desperation can cause anything. This involves ingesting tapeworms that, in turn, digest 50% of the food you consume and you get a visible result in days while eating whatever you like. Now, the process of ingesting the tapeworm is what is creeping me out. You have to eat up rotten meat or even faeces that is infected with tapeworms. I should probably stop here; I trust Nigerians not to try this.

However, there are people who would go any length to lose weight, and obvious risk include infections and God knows what else. On a lighter note, there might be a less creepy way of ingesting the tapeworm, but you wont read that in this article. It defeats the purpose. Bye.

Slimming tea

I will tell you this one for free. Most of these slimming teas are a sham. You pay N10,000 for a slimming tea because a popular celeb is the brand ambassador and the customer care rep instructed you not to eat before noon and after 6 pm while using the tea and you think its working? The cause of your weight loss here is the intermittent fasting, not the tea. Next time you think of buying slimming teas, you probably buy almonds to munch on while on your intermittent fasting.

Purging or induced vomiting

Do I need to expatiate on this? Youll only lose water weight with this and after a day youre back to your round, surplus plummy self.Lets be serious, losing water weight is not worth all that purging and vomiting.

Fruit or juice fast

This diet method has proving to be very effective and you see the visible result within 10 days; however, it might not be the safest as the body might not get all the nutrient and calories it needs. This diet method needs to be properly researched to know what fruits to eat and what quantity and duration. It can be counter-productive if the body gives an impression of false weight loss.

Keto

Theres a debate on the health implications of a ketogenic diet. Even with its popularity, eating all that fat and no carb will definitely have its effects. My advice? See a nutritionist to know what is best for you.

BONUS

Breatharian Diet:It is exactly what it sounds like, you eat air, breathe air and drink air. This is totally not related to Africans. It says something about being one with the universe and the only thing you need to survive is air. Guess what it sounds like to me, STARVATION.

The secret to weight loss is simple, a little dose of exercise, portion control, adequate rest, enough fluid and mindful eating.

The rest is here:

Want to lose weight without exercise? Fidgeting in bed is your best tactic – Real Homes

Posted: May 10, 2020 at 4:44 pm

Do you want to lose weight? Are you a fidget in bed? This could actually be good news just not for your partner when they're trying to sleep well at night.

Surprisingly, research into the science of fidgeting reveals that fidgeting may be the human body's unconscious self-regulating mechanism that can help with stress relief and weight loss.

One study has even shown that fidgeting increases your calorie burn rate by as much as 30 per cent. So, if you're regularly fidgeting in bed, this may be your body responding to a excess calorie intake or it could explain why you're slim, despite a very healthy appetite.

Some people also fidget in order to manage stressful situations something we can all relate to at the moment. Others fidget to manage boredom, which can also feel like stress something you may have noticed when trying to homeschool impatient kids.

This means that if you're the personality type that generally prefers being switched on and stimulated, going to bed can feel boring (and therefore stressful), hence the fidgeting in order to keep yourself stimulated. The result? Calories are burnt, too.

Even more interestingly, fidgeting has a strong genetic component: if you have family members who fidget, you probably do too. None of this is particularly reassuring for non-fidgeting, long-suffering partners, especially when it comes to them trying to sleep while you perform horizontal athletics.

The solution? Unlike snoring, fidgeting is fairly easy to cope with if you have a mattress that combats motion transfer effectively. That accounts for the majority of the ones we've tried on our best mattress hit list from there you can also read the reviews we've written on each mattress for more real-life reporting on this.

We spoke to Philipp Wagner, director of research and development at the Emma mattress company, and he talked about the benefits of their mattress' anti-motion transfer foam: 'It provides a unique advantage for individuals to rotate and move as they would normally in bed, without jostling their partner,' he says.

The upside of this for you both is that you can fidget all night long, burning calories all the while, and your partner can sleep undisturbed at your side.

Nature, Nurture, and Weight Loss – New York Magazine

Posted: May 9, 2020 at 11:46 pm

Photo: Mike Marsland/WireImage

Its always a little awkward when you see someone after a long time and its instantly apparent that they have gained or lost a lot of weight. My rule of thumb is never to say anything at all. You never know the full context. There could be an illness or a medication behind a sudden weight change; a psychologically crippling event; a new, successful diet; a job loss; a sudden grief; anorexia; depression; addiction; divorce; early pregnancy; or just the gentle, humanizing curves of age. It may not be something he or she wants to talk about. Open your mouth, and your foot will always hover, quivering in front of your face. So, after a handful of social catastrophes in my younger days, I keep my trap shut.

But you still think something, dont you? Theres always that initial, involuntary assessment of another body. You cant help it. Your instant response can be shaped by envy, or smugness, curiosity or admiration, attraction or even disgust. With the sex youre attracted to, theres often the hot-or-not question. And then theres a kind of surprise factor. A transformation is a transformation. Even if you keep it zipped, your surprised face can give you away. And that can sometimes be another burden for the newly fatter or slimmer person to grapple with. Its a very human mess of emotion. Which is why, I suppose, the pop star Adeles Instagram account suddenly became the hot topic this week and no one knew quite what to say.

Its a simple, cheesy photo: A petite young woman in a little black dress doing jazz hands inside what appears to be a giant white wreath or something. The message had nothing to do with Adeles new, svelte size; it was a thank-you to COVID-19 health workers on the occasion of her 32nd birthday. But it got over 7 million likes in less than a day, and not just in solidarity with health workers.

My first thought was: Wow, she doesnt look like herself at all. My second was: Good for her. My third was: I actually thought she was cuter carrying more weight. My fourth was: Well, whatever makes her happy. All of that happened in a few seconds in my lizard brain, corrected by whatever moral restraints I had previously attempted to insert there.

These were mixed feelings. I bet you have some too when seeing Adeles picture. We want to do two things at once seeing someone lose weight: compliment them on looking fabulous, and at the same time say it doesnt matter what size they are or were because theyre beautiful at any size. This sensible judgment is as humane as it is hopelessly incoherent. We cant praise weight loss without in some fashion stigmatizing weight. And attempts to get rid of this inconsistency become either cruel or absurd.

Take fat studies yet another variety of critical theory which sees the very concept of fatness as solely a form of structural oppression. In his brilliant encyclopedia of critical studies, James Lindsay explains the core argument: Like disability studies, fat studies draws on the work of Michel Foucault and queer theory to argue that negative attitudes to obesity are socially constructed and the result of systemic power that marginalizes and oppresses fat people (and fat perspectives) and of unjust medicalized narratives in order to justify prejudice against obese people. As with all critical theories, this brooks no modification. Fatness like race or gender is not grounded in physical or biological reality. It is a function of systemic power. The task of fat studies is to interrogate this oppressive power and then dismantle it.

Now take the polar opposite position: Fatness is an unhealthy lifestyle that can be stopped by people just eating less and better. We havent always been this fat, and we should take responsibility for it, and the physical and psychological damage it brings. Some level of stigma is thereby inevitable, and arguably useful. Humans are not healthy when they are badly overweight; and the explosion in obesity in America has become a serious public-health issue. It is, for example, the single biggest comorbidity for non-elderly patients with COVID-19. When did it become taboo in this country to talk about getting healthy? my friend Bill Maher asked in a recent monologue. Fat shaming doesnt need to end; it needs to make a comeback. Some amount of shame is good. We shamed people out of smoking and into wearing seat belts. We shamed them out of littering and most of them out of racism.

Polarized to absurdity, reductionist in their analysis, the arguments for both fat studies and fat shaming are almost designed for Twitter, and catnip for the hot-take culture war. On one side are helpless victims, who react to any debate with cries of oppression, and take no responsibility for their own physical destiny; on the other are brutal realists, with a callous touch, often refusing to see the genetic, social, and psychological complexity of fatness, or that serious health issues are not universal among heavier types. And the two stances reflect our two ideological poles not so much left and right anymore as nurture and nature. One pole argues nature doesnt independently exist and everything is social; and one blithely asserts that nature determines everything. Both are ruinous attempts to bludgeon uncomfortable reality into satisfying ideology.

Our main task right now with fatness, it seems to me, as with race or gender or sexual orientation or gender identity, is to grapple with complexity in a way that can be rigorously empirical and yet also humane.

This shouldnt be that hard, and most people in real life manage it. There is a huge amount of subjectivity on the question of beauty, and this helps. But this is also probably why Adele touched such a nerve. She really helped pioneer a greater appreciation of the beauty of plumpness. She didnt just look good as a plus-size woman; she looked fantastic. She seemed to expand the window of unconventional beauty for a while, and now she seems to have retreated into a more familiar style. It seems perfectly natural to regret some of this dynamic, and the way in which it can torment women and girls.

But there is a limit. Beauty and health are also correlated. Obesity can be dangerous and physically and emotionally draining for those who live with it. (The best treatment of these delicate issues that I have read is Marc Ambinders epic essay on his own struggles.) Certain forms of attractiveness do have evolutionary roots, and are transcultural. Men, in general, are drawn to youth, curvy hips, and big boobs as theyre all pretty good proxies for fecundity, and play some part in our evolutionary strategy. Women, in general, are subtler in their instant tastes, judging character and stability, but also by no means immune to the brawny and muscular proxies for being a physical protector and good father. Age, after a certain point, can lead to a kind of sexual invisibility, even for men. We can push against these stereotypes, we can lament them, but we cant abolish them.

Youd think for example that queer people would be in the vanguard of pioneering new forms of sexual attractiveness, and dismantling systems of oppression. And this is true to some extent. Gay men have managed to find any number of body forms attractive: the big furry bears; the skinny twinks; the newly popular daddies. But theres still a brutal, underlying hierarchy: muscles still count, hard-wired models of masculinity usually win in sexual competition, youth trumps age, and the A-list of gay Instagram is a flurry of endless, interchangeable abdominals. A huge reason for gays passion for the gym is not just health; its social status.

Ive learned to live with this. Were all messes. Ive spent more hours in gyms than I care to count, constructing a bodybuilder physique because it works in the crudest way in capturing the attention of men. We are all driven by instinctive attraction, but men are particularly subject to fixed and crude notions of hotness. Beauty will thereby always be the source of extraordinary and extraordinarily unfair advantage, even if it captures only a tiny slice of what being human is about. Is there any privilege anywhere that rivals that of the good-looking?

This is our reality. We are neither angels nor beasts, but we partake of both. We can rarely make the ugly beautiful, and if we do, its a moral achievement. However much we try, we will never correct the core natural inequalities and differences of our mammalian existence. But we can hazard a moral middle, seeing beauty in many ways, acknowledging the humanity of all shapes and sizes, while managing our health and weight in ways that are not totally subject to the gaze of others.

And we can greet the newly thin or newly fat in ways that do not fit any ideological rubric. To paraphrase Philip Larkin, we can try in these matters to be both true and kind. Or at least not untrue, and not unkind.

None of us has any solid notion yet of quite how transformative our current plague will be. I look at the staggering unemployment numbers this morning and dont know what to make of the surrealism of it all. Are we really suddenly in another Great Depression, twice as bad as the 2008 crash? Can an economy at full employment only a couple of months ago be completely ruined this quickly? Im not an economist, but whats the difference between a cyclical recession and one caused by a public-health crisis? Well, I guess were about to find out.

But one thing really does seem clear. All the trends in the culture that have led us to withdraw physically from one another, to live in an online space, to replace real life with virtual existence: These shifts have all been artificially accelerated. The essential socializing mechanisms of school and college, from kindergarten onward, have evaporated overnight. Religious practice, for so long a communal and physical thing, is suspended in midair, the sacraments withheld, the rituals that bind us together as Christians or Jews or Muslims and connect us to the past abandoned.

Workplaces, our other major forum for socialization, have disappeared into thin air, as Zoom meetings proliferate and we live in a Brady Bunch square set onscreen. Public transport that forced us to interact with one another daily continues for essential workers but in a far more attenuated way for most white-collar and affluent Americans, further dividing classes. Doctors diagnose through screens; therapists are on speaker phones; friends are on FaceTime and nowhere else. Evolving media technologies that were slowly gaining speed have been suddenly sucked from the future into the present:

As COVID-19 impacts every aspect of work and life, Microsoft has seen two years worth of digital transformation in just two months of its third quarter (January-March period), said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during an earnings call on Wednesday. The company on Wednesday beat Wall Street sales and profit expectations, powered by sharp demand for its Teams chat and online meeting app and Xbox gaming services as the world shifted to working and playing from home Microsoft saw all-time record gaming engagement in its third quarter, with nearly 19 million active users of Xbox Live, led by the strength on and off-console.

The struggle of small, local retail stores, already pummeled by Amazon, gets more intense and doomed each day. And they are not just economic units: Theyre social ones. Theyre where we see neighbors and strangers and friends. The collective human experience of a football or basketball game cannot be replicated in an empty stadium; the comedian cannot bring people together around a joke that ends in silence; the dates we once had for a play or a movie or a concert have had to end. In a crisis of loneliness, we have somehow managed to make life lonelier still.

The restaurants that have helped regenerate neighborhoods and sustain new communities are being culled at a terrifying rate. The bars where we flirted; the coffee shops where we worked and chatted; the gyms where we recognized familiar faces: These are all in suspension, underlining modernitys already dehumanizing solitude. Even family life, which is an essential base for so much of our social activity, cant play the role it should. Packing everyone into the same space all day and night, with no outlet for others, is a recipe for marital failure, and family suffocation. The abuse of spouses and children this crisis has enabled will echo into the future.

Extramarital sex has gone completely virtual an ephemeral series of online flirtations and porn fantasies. We barely even acknowledge one another in supermarkets, our faces masked, our hands in gloves, our distance nervously kept. Social media the addictive, distractive habit we were trying to get some handle on is now the only real-time socialization we have. After some success at weaning myself off my phone, Ive never spent so much time on it.

This is not so far, it seems to me, a revolutionary moment for change away from our recent past. At least not yet. Its more like a fast-forward of existing trends, a speeding up of social atomization, even as the cultural wreckage remains.

Perhaps this will in turn prompt a reaction, and help us restore the human to our world. But humans adjust, and this time we have had to adjust very quickly. The tools we have used to keep going in this era will surely remain in our hands we will get used to them, and, in turn, we will get attached to them. Insofar as they have made businesses more efficient, or our own lives simpler, theyll stick. The quiet out there that seemed so shocking only a month ago now seems much more familiar. What we needed, in some ways, for our collective mental health, was a catalyst for greater physical socialization, more human contact, and more meaningful community. What were getting, I fear, is the opposite.

Im not sure why, but cooking has always bored me. Maybe I picked that up from my mother, who actively despised it. Or maybe, as I tell myself, its just a rational lifestyle decision. I figure I could never make something as good as a basic restaurant my tastes are not exactly refined and it would take me at least twice as much time. So why not just cut to the chase? You just have to budget differently to afford it. As anyone who knows me has probably noticed, I save on clothes.

But it also had to do with diners. In America, I fell in love with them. The first one I went to was in Los Angeles, taken by my uncle who was living and working there for a short period of time. This was 1983 and I was still a teenager, encountering this continent anew, and falling unexpectedly in love with it. The first time Id ever been to a restaurant was when I went to college (my family regarded eating out as a crazy luxury), and I had always associated going out to dinner with poshness. They were extravagantly expensive places where I often felt completely out of place.

But this diner in West L.A.? With its AC humming, and its coffee pots simmering, and its washcloth-bearing waitresses zipping through the booths, it instantly made me feel at home. So comfortingly middle class. Nothing incomprehensible on the menu, oodles of comfort food, milkshakes, malts, burgers, fries, muffins, and a constant stream of fresh coffee. Chicken pot pie. Meatloaf. Rice pudding. The waitress didnt look down on you. And you could stay a while.

And they were not that expensive either. If you have a local diner and Ive adopted one wherever Ive landed you also have a menu of reliable food and a stream of familiar faces. In Cambridge back in the day, I used to hang out at the old Mugn Muffin; in my brief stint in New York City, the Dish staff would get together weekly in a diner on Eighth Avenue; and in D.C., over 20 years ago, a friend of mine asked me to be an investor in a new diner in Adams Morgan, and it became, over the years, my home away from home.

The Duplex Diner, as it is somewhat unimaginatively called, became a local institution on 18th Street. I took writers and friends there all the time; I had a weekly date with my bestie there; after a long day of writing or reading, Id often hop on my bike, grab a seat at the bar, and unwind. I had a drink that would usually be poured as I walked in the door: a Jagermeister shot and a Diet Coke. Why on earth would I slave away alone over a stove or microwave to sit by myself and watch the telly, when I could drop by, see friends, get some gossip, and eat?

Its been shut now, like so many others, for weeks. The lights are out; the buzz is gone; the regulars dispersed. No one knows when it will be open again, or even if it will. Ive tried to cook at home, and its a little pathetic. I can just about pull off breakfast and some basics. I was very proud of myself for making a grilled chicken salad the other day. I read about and see all these other quarantined Whole Foods Instagrammers baking bread, chopping fennel, finessing recipes, and I dont even feel envy. All I want is that sense of company, a place at the bar, a simple meal, and a drink thats waiting for me again. And I have no idea if Im ever getting it back.

See you next Friday.

Bill Maher Has the Worst Take on Adele’s Weight Loss – Daily Beast

Posted: May 9, 2020 at 11:46 pm

Adele posted a message to her social media channels this week thanking those on the front lines fighting COVID-19. In the process, the celebrated singer unveiled a thinner frameand the internet had a lot of thoughts about it, almost all trash.

Enter Bill Maher, noted #MeToo skeptic, with perhaps the most garbage take of them all.

On Friday night, during the interview portion of his HBO show Real Time, the comedian began by placing the bulk of the blame for the high amount of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. compared to other countries on Americas obesity problemnot, say, the fact that the Trump administration didnt do a single thing during the month of February to contain the spread of the virus.

The most important thing to do, they could have said, is get yourself in better shape. You could change your health profile a lot in two months, argued Maher. We could be in a much better position, and its just like when George W. Bush said after 9/11, Go shopping, and this was like, Keep eating. I know people hate to hear that message, and I hate to say it, but its the truth: the core of this problem in this country, one reasonobviously besides the Trumpian nonsenseis that we, as a country you look at the numbers from other countries around the world, not nearly the amount of deaths because they dont have the same obesity profile.

I have no idea what the hell the 9/11 comparison is about, and theres no question that America has an obesity problem, but its also plagued by inept leadership, a broken health-care system, a widening wealth gap, and a big-farming epidemic thats inserting unhealthy chemicals into our food, and many of these are contributing factors to obesity. To lay the blame for the countrys obesity problem entirely on the shoulders of its people is rubbish, and to minimize the role the Trump administrations played in allowing the virus to spread nationwide is even more rubbish.

To lay the blame for the countrys obesity problem entirely on the shoulders of its people is rubbish, and to minimize the role the Trump administrations played in allowing the virus to spread nationwide is even more rubbish.

But Maher wasnt finished. When you talk about this issue, its very easy for other people to score cheap points by attacking the messenger, when the truth is theyre just enabling people. Basically, weve gotten to this place where were proud of gluttony, the TV host said, before somehow tying this all to the Adele news.

Adele lost a lot of weightit was all over the pressand theres a controversy about this. This is not controversial! This is purely a good thing, offered Maher. And by the way, the old Adele would not fare as well with COVID-19. We applaud health-care workers when they save other peoples lives; we should applaud other people, I think, when they make a move to save their own life.

He then began reading some tweets about the Adele photo. Did we again push another sane person in the spotlight into eating disorder? Maher read, before weighing in: The eating disorder is eating too much! This is insane that they think an eating disorder goes in the other direction.

Yes, in Bill Mahers strange world, the only eating disorder is eating too much.
