The surprising weight loss diet that may protect you from Coronavirus – Ladders
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
For three consecutive years,The Mediterranean diet has been awarded diet of the year by the U.S. News & World Report.
As far as overall health is concerned, the ancient regimen is hard to beat but there are plans that emphasize nutriments of more material to individuals living with chronic conditions.
The Dash Diet was conceived back in 1992 by the National Institute of Health in an effort to curb rising hypertension and CVD statistics in the United States. The intervention method, which called for a surplus of fresh ingredients and disallowed heavily processed foods, is inching back towards relevance in the midst of a global viral crisis.
Half of the first 170 patients who died of COVID-19 suffered from hypertension before contracting the novel infection.
From what I was told by other doctors and the data I can see myself, among all the underlying diseases, hypertension is a key dangerous factor, said Du, director of the intensive care unit at Peking Union Medical College Hospital in the Chinese capital of Beijing in a press statement.
The Dash Diet is designed to eliminate dietary agents that spike inflammation and clog arteries. Pending pandemic aside, heart disease remains the number one killer in the US by a sizeable margin.
In the last 50 years in the US, clinicians have seen a rise in diseases including hypertension (HTN), diabetes, obesity, and coronary artery disease (CAD). An estimated 2000 people die of heart disease every day in the US. Chronic diseases related to diet and obesity have become major causes of death in the US across all ethnicities. Obesity has been linked to the major etiological factor in diabetes, HTN, cancer, and CAD, write the team of researchers that established the regimen.
The diet allows 2,000 calories a day, primarily composed of whole-grain ingredients.
Five hundred-thousand Americans go bankrupt on behalf of medical debt a year, making diet science more pertinent than ever.
Heres what you can eat
And heres what you shouldnt
If youre dealing with elevated blood pressure or other cardiovascular risks, theres no question about it; but even if youre looking to lose weight before hitting the beach this summer, the DASH diet may be safer for you compared to the keto diet or Whole30, explains Stefani Sassos, MS, RDN, CSO, CDN, a registered dietitian within the Good Housekeeping Institute
All of the probative data on the COVID-19s development suggest we might be in the trench for longer than previously assumed. In the meantime, remember to sanitize and fortify your body against harmful agents.
The Dash Diet is a good place to start if you have a history of CVD, high blood pressure or hypertension.

The massive tongan prop who was ‘too overweight’ to play rugby reveals incredible weight loss – Rugby OnSlaught
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
Tongan prop Ben Tameifuna has revealed an incredible weight loss in a video just months after was told he couldnt play for a French club because he was too overweight!
Racing 92 had ordered Ben Tameifunato lose weight with the club unhappy with theTongainternationals condition following his return from the Rugby World Cup.
The Tongan prop was seriously overweight going into the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Here is a video showing how big he WAS.
According to reports in France, Tameifuna tipped the scales at 160kg when he reported back to the Top14 club.
It is not the first time Racing have been unhappy with the 28-year-olds weight.
The former Chiefs player was reportedly at 140kg when he left for the tournament but has packed on the beef despite playing and training in France over the past month.
The 28-year-old Tameifuna, the heaviest player at the tournament, is no stranger to weight issues with the latest reports bringing a reminder of Big Ben returning from a summer vacation last year weighing 166kg.
In 2018, Tameifuna returned for pre-season weighting 166kg.
An incredible video shows just how much weight the prop has now lost and it looks like he has lost around 20kg just by looking at his waistline!
Much in the past have been made of Props and their distinct lack of athleticism in some cases. Weve recently spoken at length about the size of Ben Temifuna who is one the biggest players to EVER have played in a World Cup. If you look at this kicking attempt here though, you wouldnt think that man weighs 21 stone!
Tonga may be out of the competition but videos like this will certainly keep them on the radar for rugby fans out there.
This is after the Tonga rugby Twitter account sent a message to head coach Toutai Kefu with a video of Ben The Boot Tameifuna nailing a kick from 40 metres, whilst also telling current kicker Sonatane Takulua that he has a new rival in the team.

5 unhealthy salad dressings that are sabotaging your weight loss routine – Times of India
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
Caesar dressings are a staple at most restaurants and is a favorite for many new and regular salad eaters. The much-adored taste of the sauce comes from the Parmesan cheese, oil and egg yolks with which it is made. The cheese and the oil in the ingredients make the dressing fatty and salty. Anybody looking to lose weight should stay away from Caesar dressings.
A salad dressing makes a boring salad much more palatable, making them irresistible. However, a lot of them put all the effort you do at the gym to waste. Instead, you should consciously shift to healthier alternatives like vinaigrette or even plain vinegar for the much-needed tang in your salad. If your taste buds compel you to take creamier options, make sure you use healthier home-made alternatives to keep yourself on track for your weight loss goal.

How to measure your weight loss without a weighing scale – The Star Online
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
Humans are obsessed with their weight. Were always looking for ways to lose it.
Ironically, its the ones that are slim and healthy-looking who ask me for weight loss tips.
Does dropping one or two kilogrammes really make a difference to your overall health, or is it purely for aesthetic purposes?
The overweight ones are not too bothered. Not until they are diagnosed with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol, that is. Then they spring into action.
These days, even animals are put on a diet because like their owners, they lack exercise and have joined the worlds growing girths club.
They eat our food scraps and enjoy air-conditioned living.
A pet lover friend puts her poodle in a special dog seat and takes him for a ride around town. In the park, his paws are covered with booties to protect and keep them clean.
This pooch is so pampered that when the owner is at work, he listens to recorded music, interspersed with the owners voice (to eliminate the feeling of loneliness).
After dinner, he gets his teeth flossed!
His only daily exercise is to walk from the couch to the bathroom a few times a day to take a pee break. By the way, his pampers are neatly laid out beside the toilet bowl!
No wonder the furry fella is fat, but charming nevertheless.
Last I heard, the vet has ordered him to exercise more so the friend is taking her four-legged companion on nightly walks.
To lose weight, you have to eat, poo and sleep well. Exercise is then added into the equation.
However, the scale isnt always the best way to measure your progress.
A lower number may boost your mood, but changing your body goes beyond this number.
And frequently weighing yourself may be discouraging as your water weight will always fluctuate.
But how can we measure weight loss without standing on the cold scale?
Well, here are some ways to indicate if youve gained or lost weight without using the weighing scale.
Do your clothes fit well?
The easiest way to tell if youve lost weight is by looking at how your clothes fit.
Do they hang loose, are they bursting at the seams or is the zip on your pants unable to close? If your clothes have become looser, then youve definitely shed some weight.
If you are no longer able to button your shirt, then clearly, your belly has expanded.
But if you need a belt to hold your pants in place, thats progress.
However, when your muscle mass increases, your clothes may sometimes still feel snug, but the softer, fleshier parts of your body will feel hardened as muscles replace fat.
Feeling more comfortable in your clothes or going down a size is more important than stepping on the scale, as they are more accurate indications of fat loss.
There are those who prefer wearing baggy outfits to camouflage whats beneath.
Sorry, but this isnt going to help much in your weight loss journey.
Snap a weekly selfie
Im not a fan of selfies, but the majority of people are.
Take a fortnightly or weekly picture of yourself at several different angles to keep track of your progress.
Wear the same outfit and stand in the same place every time.
Dont be discouraged if there are no drastic changes in the photographs. If youre doing everything right, the results will come in time.
After all, weight loss is a gradual process that doesnt happen overnight.
And dont believe people who tell you its possible to lose 5kg in a week. The faster you lose, the faster you will gain it back.
Measure your sleep
When youre expending extra energy working out and feeding yourself with better foods, youre more likely to get a good nights sleep.
Parents often tire their children out during the day so that they sleep better at night.
The same rule applies to everybody, no matter what age you are.
When your sleep goes down, your weight goes up. Sleep deprivation causes changes in hormones that regulate hunger and appetite.
Inadequate sleep increases the hunger hormone called ghrelin and decreases levels of the satiety/fullness hormone called leptin, which can lead to overeating.
The less you sleep, the more you tend to eat, as you stay awake for longer hours.
When you lack sleep, your brain cant make rational decisions, and youre also more likely to be impulsive and give in to junk food desires.
The better you sleep, the less the chances of weight gain.
There are many wearable devices in the market to track your sleep patterns, so try them out.
Get a measuring tape
Measuring your body parts can give you a rough estimate of where youve lost weight and how many inches have come off.Take out your old-fashioned measuring tape and measure the parts of your body you want to see change in.
It doesnt tell you whether youve lost fat or muscle (you need an equipment to measure your body composition for this), but its still a good starting point.
We all lose weight at different rates and some areas show faster results than others.
So, take out your old-fashioned tape and measure the areas you want to see change, such as the waist, arms, thighs, buttocks and chest.
Do this every two weeks and note the difference.
Believe it or not, one student told me she had lost weight on her ankles because all her leggings were now loose around the ankles and it wasnt because she put them in the washer!
Ive heard of people being able to slip into their wedding bands again after they got trimmer, but ankle weight loss is new to me!
Increased energy levels
With weight loss, you can tackle everyday tasks better.
Small efforts like getting in and out of the car, walking up a flight of steps or carrying the groceries up your apartment block become easier. Panting and puffing become things of the past.
All of these activities are deemed important because they deal with real life.
Yes, you enjoy living once more and feel empowered when your energy levels are high.
When you have increased energy levels throughout the day, it means your blood sugar levels are balanced.
Your diet or regular fitness routine could have contributed to this, but the scale will not reflect this.
A sharper mind
Many studies show that exercise boosts memory power.
As you shed weight, mental tasks become easier as you will be able to think clearer your attention span, concentration, planning and coordination all improve.
Naysayers might say that certain herbs can also increase memory power. They might, but they dont bring about other benefits.
Ultimately, get in tune with your body. Listen to it, treat it with care and it will reveal plenty of insights, besides serving you well.
Gauge how youre feeling instead of focusing on numbers on the scale.
You may have started your fitness journey for aesthetic reasons, but as you continue on your path to better health, you may begin to discover a new you.
And that new you wont become a slave to the scale.

Woman talks about weight loss journey after shedding 5st in five months – Daily Star
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
A woman has talked about her weight loss journey after shedding 5st in five months.
At her heaviest, Caroline Angus, 45, tipped the scales at 17st 9lbs after carrying her bad eating habits from childhood into adult life.
It took a photo from a family day out to spur her into lose a massive 5st and overcome a lifetime of bad habits in just five months.
Now she revealed how she embarked on her transformation after joining her local LighterLife group in Hertfordshire.
She said: From an early age I remember my weight being a thing. I would hide food in my room and when it came to dinner time I would instinctively eat everything on my plate.
I began to form this unhealthy relationship with food that followed me into adulthood. My eating habits were never balanced, I was either starving hungry or binging.
Even in my 40s I had a secret chocolate stash. I hadnt quite realised the size Id got to until I saw a photo taken during a family day out to Madam Tussauds.
Caroline started her weight loss journey after spotting a LighterLife magazine in her doctors surgery.
She read how you could lose weight in just four weeks, which instantly encouraged her to begin her transformation.
Speaking about joining the LighterLife programme, Caroline said: In my first week I lost an impressive 8lb.
Once your body reaches ketosis you no longer crave carbs and the hunger just disappears. Most of my life all Ive wanted is to feel normal, to be able to shop in high street stores and cross my legs without struggling.
And after just five months on LighterLife, Im delighted to say I finally feel normal! Im so much more confident in myself and definitely stand taller now. I cant quite believe Ive gone from a dress size 24 to a 16.
Breakfast: Three slices of buttered toast with 2-3 cups of tea. Then a bacon or sausage sandwich and a raspberry and white chocolate muffin at work
Lunch: A hot meal, for example roast dinner, pasta dish, shepherds pie, pizza, or large jacket potato with cheese and coleslaw. This would be followed by crisps and chocolate
Dinner: Pie and chips, or pizza, or chicken Kiev and chips, lots of beige food
Snacks: Ice cream, crisps and more chocolate
Breakfast: LighterLife blueberry pancakes
Lunch: LighterLife creamy chicken noodle FastPot
Dinner: LighterLife shepherd's pie
Snacks: LighterLife chocolate mug cake

X Factors Lucy Spraggan shows off incredible weight loss after dropping three dress sizes – The Sun
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
X FACTOR star Lucy Spraggan showed off her incredible weight loss after dropping three dress sizes.
The country singer, 28, has spent the last 11 months hitting in the gym, showing off the weight loss by pulling the waist band of her trousers.
7
However, not everyone was as thrilled of the star - who shot to fame in 2012 series of the singing competition - as she was forced to fight back against a troll criticising her looks.
The person wrote on a photo of her in a suit: "You dress like a 50yrs old lawyer whos due in court.. you're only young but your new dress sence is terrible, you've done so well getting yourself healthy but why change what you wear, you've changed to much of yourself.
"Surely your old taste in clothing was more real?! [sic.]"
Lucy hit back, saying: "You think I wear bespoke suits every day? Even if I did, why the fuck would it have anything to do with you? Ive been working with King and Allen since I was a porker, love.
7
7
"I have no idea why losing weight has encouraged people to make open comments about me.
Stop it."
She also re-posted it on Instagram and wrote to her followers: "Believe it or not, losing a few stone and wearing a bespoke suit (which Ive been into for nearly 4 years) doesnt make me a whole other person. (I wear tracksuits 99% of the time anyway ).
"Everybody evolves, some people devolve, but the fact is we are always changing. And that is fine, that is natural.
"Right now I am the best version of myself Ive ever been and Im working incredibly hard to keep that going."
7
7
Lucy announced she split from her wife Georgina Gordon after six years in November last year.
She took to Instagram to announce the break up just three years after they got married.
"It's with sadness to let you know that after nearly 6 years of joy, fun and true love Georgina and I have decided to part ways," she wrote.
"We have shared the most amazing times and life together, and we are truly grateful for knowing love at its full capacity.
"We will continue on our paths as ultimate friends, and dog Mums, united by the bond and memories we will always have.
"We are eternally thankful for the support you have offered to us; in this time of hardship we appreciate space and time to deal with the change."

Weight loss: This photographer shed 50+ kilos through strength training and calorie deficit! – Times of India
Posted: March 13, 2020 at 10:42 pm
It was a long-awaited Thailand trip which made 25-year-old Himanshu kickstart his weight loss journey. The results not only changed his appearance but his overall life too. His transformation journey is an example that nothing can stop you if you are dedicated to your goal:Name: Himanshu Sharma
Occupation: Wedding Photographer
Age: 25Height: 6.0
City: Delhi
Highest weight recorded: 121Kgs
Duration it took me to lose weight: 10Months
The turning point: We had a Thailand trip to go to and I had planned to lose some weight before the trip. However, the transformation didnt really happen and I did not get the results I wanted in one month. I came back, started again and for six straight months, without any break, I researched on the internet and worked on my body. I am proud to admit that losing weight turned my life around.
My breakfast: Oats + Peanut Butter(Unsweetened) + Protein( Eggs or Whey)
My lunch: Mostly Protein portion(Chicken/Eggs) + Fats (Almonds or Peanuts) + Carbs (Rice /Bread)
My dinner: Fats and Protein (Paneer/Eggs), and the quantity depended on my calorie requirements. I jotted down all the needed info and ate accordingly.I also made sure that I drank 3-6 litres of water every day. Staying hydrated, especially when you workout is important.
Pre-workout meal: Something carb-loaded Oats/Bread on heavy training day (Legs/Back)
On small muscle group days (Biceps-Shoulders) I preferred MCT oil or Coffee as a pre-workout drink.
Post-workout meal: Protein Shake with peanut butter.
I indulge in (What you eat on your cheat days): I dont have any cheat days, in fact, I dont support cheat mentality. I eat what I feel like and move on. No cheat mentality= no guilt!
My workout: My workout was a complex mix of Strength Training with HIIT and frequent changes in the regime so that my body doesnt get used to it. Compound lifts along with HIIT are my favourite to boost the metabolic rate as well as it keeps you strong along with good cardiac health.
Low-calorie recipes I swear by : When you are on a dietary cut, you are allowed to have a limited number of calories. The best way to go with it is to fill 50% of your plate with protein, rest add some veggies and fats. Add carbs before or after workouts, or around the time you are most active. Avoid snacking in between.
Some of my favs are chicken breast greek salad (keep a check on the dressing sauce). Mix Vegetable Juices are low in calorie and high on fibre and multi-minerals. They keep you full!
Fitness secrets I unveiled: One can not simply think of losing weight on the spot and get abs. You cannot maintain abs all year-round and it is really unhealthy to have very low body fat for a longer time.
There is no secret to being healthy, its hard work with persistence and a goal.Patience, resilience, and staying mentally well is also more important than just building abs. A fit body takes it own time so there is no point rushing into it.
How do I stay motivated? Motivation is overrated. You got to do what you got to do. I never thought I am going to change so much. It comes slowly and you have got to keep working on it. Set your eyes on the target and keep your head down and you will see results.
How do you ensure you dont lose focus? Perseverance is the key to success. Every morning get up and realise what your goal is and do whatever helps you with your goals. Take small decisions, be obsessed with your goal. Think positive, if you want to have a dessert, have it and move on. I firmly believe that people lose their way because they go too hard on themselves.
Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? I dont count body shaming because you can't control what others say. Being overweight brings health problems. Running, breathing, body pain, bad posture, knee pain, heart health-these are some of the problems which become a part of your everyday life.
What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I am not obsessed with any shape but 10 years down the line I would like to see myself consistently health, with better mental and muscle health.
What are the lifestyle changes you made? There are too many and still going on. Getting up on time, following a regime for everything, not just workouts.I quit smoking and drinking (by choice), I quit eating oily food and high sugar desserts. I make my own food, do my own chores but did not give up on anyone thing(food). Plus, I am more positive and grateful for what I have and ready to welcome more. Cut out the negativity and you start seeing a difference.
What was the lowest point for you? There are highs and lows, nothing such as I have two really good friends who keep me uplifted. Enjoy the journey its only making you better!
Lessons learnt from weight loss: There are so many lessons I have and would like to tell people reading my story:
- Have Goals, they will give you directions when you are lost!-Whatever happens, dont give up. Bounce back every time!
-Dont get attached to your results! Detach.-Dont wait for motivation

Helping seniors stay healthy
This winter as the rate of senior hospitalization typically reaches its highest point of the year the Home Instead Senior Care, serving Danvers and surrounding areas, has committed to reducing area hospitalizations through the launch of a new informational campaign aimed at educating families how to help aging loved ones remain healthy at home year-round.
There are many things families can do to help keep their senior loved ones out of the hospital. In fact, in a new study of nurses who work primarily with seniors, 99 percent say that the role families play in keeping seniors out of the hospital is just as important as the role of the medical community.
From monitoring their taking of prescribed medications for chronic conditions to attending doctors visits and checking in to ensure doctors instructions are followed, their role as a medical advocate is critical.
To help family members identify and act on potential warning signs, Home Instead is offering Five Ways to Prevent Senior Hospitalizations guide, developed in partnership with Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, incoming president of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association.
This free resource includes information about common risk factors and the steps that families can take to help ensure a healthy lifestyle. Additional free family resources can be found at http://www.preventseniorhospitalizations.com. To obtain a copy of the guide or to learn more about how you can help keep your senior loved one out of the hospital this winter, please call 978-725-5995.

What is considered obese and why it doesn’t always mean poor health – msnNOW

From 1999-2000, an estimated 30.5% of Americans were obese. By 2017-2018, that number had risen to 42.5%, costing those who are obese roughly $1,429 more in healthcare expenses than people of a normal weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since obesity is on the rise and related to so many negative health effects, it's important that doctors can easily define obesity in order to help patients take control of their health.
"We want to come up with a universal way of defining obesity, because different cultures define it differently," says Mir Ali, MD, bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center. "So the thing we have that isn't the most accurate, but at least it's a common reference point, is the body mass index (BMI)."
BMI is the most standard way for doctors and patients to determine if someone is overweight or obese. It's calculated with a formula that takes into account your height and weight and there are many online BMI calculators you can use to easily calculate your own BMI. Here's what you need to know about BMI, it's role in determining obesity, and why it's not always the best tool.
The three tiers of obesity
According to the CDC, a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 30 or above is obese. Additionally, there are three subcategories, or classes, of obesity based on BMI. According to the CDC, Class 1 is a BMI of 30 to 35, Class 2 is a BMI of 35 to 40, and Class 3 is a BMI of 40 or higher.
"Someone with a BMI of 40 has a two to three times greater risk of developing obesity related diseases [than someone with a healthy BMI]," says Ali, adding that these classes are also important to help doctors decide what kind of treatment is necessary.
If you have a BMI greater than 40, then you could qualify for bariatric surgery. Whereas, if you have a BMI between 30 and 40 and have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise, your doctor may prescribe a diet pill to aid weight loss.
However, BMI is not a be all end all to measure obesity. For example, a high BMI doesn't always mean obesity. "The BMI calculation doesn't take into account anybody's body composition, and that can affect how healthy they are. A 300-pound bodybuilder with 5% body fat [may be] healthy, but if you plug him into the BMI formula, he [will] come out obese," says Ali.
Other ways to measure obesity
Aside from BMI, there are a few other more accurate ways to measure obesity and the risk of obesity-related disease:
While this one is very accurate, Ali says it isn't readily available to the general public, and it's expensive. The test usually isn't offered at typical X-Ray/imaging centers, and most people don't actually require this precise level of accuracy to make treatment choices.
Obesity and fitness
Being obese does not automatically mean you are unhealthy. The importance of exercise in obese people has been extensively researched.
For example, a study published in BMC Obesity in 2018, showed that somebody who is severely obese but very active can be as healthy as someone who is moderately obese and does not exercise very much. Additionally, a 2017 study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology concluded that obese people who regularly worked out had less risk of cardiovascular disease than obese people who were inactive.
"The less active you are as an obese person, the more likely you'll be to develop health issues," says Ali. "Activity helps keep your cardiovascular health strong, helps to reduce your risk of degenerative changes in the joints, and other health issues, so activity is important."
Fitness is so important for health because it helps prevent the build-up of visceral fat, which lies beneath the abdominal muscles surrounding vital organs like the liver, intestines, and stomach. Visceral fat is one of the biggest risk factors in obese people for developing health problems.
If you are obese or think you may be obese, it's important to keep active and eat healthily to avoid the complications that can be caused by obesity. Speak to your doctor or an obesity specialist to get on the right track.
