Jeremy Bromwell always made it a point to stay active and maintain a healthy weight he lifted weights at his gym and ran 5ks, 10ks and a half marathon. [Exercise] was something I did pretty regularly to help keep my weight in check, so I wouldnt be giving up the experience when I sat down to a meal at a restaurant, he says.
That all changed in October 2014, when Bromwell was riding his motorcycle home from work in San Francisco and was hit by an SUV. The accident shattered both of the bones in his lower leg. He was expected to recover in about six months, but his bone became infected.
Talk about adding some mental and emotional barriers on top of the physical. At the six-month mark I was supposed to be back to normal. That got blown up it became wait and see, we dont know. My brain was not able to wrap around it, he says. Bromwell needed 10 surgeries before that bone healed properly, and the last one was performed in December 2016, more than two years after his accident.
The motorcycle accident was the first time I had physical limitations imposed that I couldnt work out on my own, he says. I lost control of the activities I could and couldnt do. That was where I really started to struggle.
As Bromwell recovered, he concedes that he overdid it. For a long time, I couldnt do the things I enjoyed. As I started to get more mobility back and I was able to drive myself, I over-indexed for all the things I hadnt been able to do, whether that was a glass of wine or a restaurant or both, he says.
Samantha Cassetty, MS, RD, a nutrition and weight-loss expert with a virtual nutrition counseling practice based in New York City, understands the desire to turn to food after an event like Bromwells. He went through a very tragic and challenging experience, and food can be such a source of pleasure and comfort. Its the quickest route to feeling better, she says.
Bromwell says his ramped-up social life contributed to his weight gain. Once I could start to meet friends and colleagues out of the house it was nice to do that. That, combined with not being able to do things like weights a couple of days and cardio three to five days, was the catalyst for the weight gain.
Cassetty points out that while exercise isnt as useful for weight loss, its very helpful for weight maintenance. So, the decline in activity levels can definitely promote weight gain, she says.
Bromwell gained 30 pounds, and during a four-month long road trip with his partner in summer 2017, trying restaurants in different U.S. cities, he added another 30 pounds.
Back in California in November 2017, Bromwell and his partner split up. I was single for the first time in four years and I was really heavy. Its amazing when you see yourself every day you dont see yourself changing. You look back and think, What the hell happened to me?

Inspired by the summer road trip, Bromwell decided to try living and working on the road full-time. He also decided he needed to get serious about losing weight.
I had a lot of leg pain from carrying around the extra weight. I wanted to move forward in a happier, healthier way and get back to my pre-accident weight, even though it seemed like an infinity away, he says.
Cassetty recognizes that a lot of people, like Bromwell, want to get back to a previous weight. But focusing on the scale can be a challenge. The number on the scale is often beyond your control stress, sleep, age, medications, can all play a role, she says.
She recommends goals you can control, like exercising twice a week, cooking two dinners at home, or meal prepping for an hour over the weekend. When you focus on a goal that you can accomplish, it can lead to behavior change and that will typically result in achieving a more comfortable weight, she says.
With a background in digital marketing and analytics, Bromwell loves tracking and understanding data. He also knew he wanted a healthy lifestyle, not a diet where he felt forced to give things up. I learned enough about my body through all those surgeries that I knew I needed to listen to my body, he says. I wanted to make healthy choices in a mindful way.
He started using the Lose It! app to log his food, bring together data about his activity and sleep, and track his progress toward his goal of losing a pound a week.
Cassetty says this type of tracking can be a good tool. For those who appreciate the data and feedback, studies show that this form of self-monitoring can be very effective for weight loss, and research shows that many people dont have any problems with it, she says. Its a personal choice, though. Some people find it tedious and it can lead to an unhealthy obsession about food, she says.
Focusing on portion size made a big difference for Bromwell. I had to get back in the habit of cooking for one, he says. I had to figure out on the road how to make better choices. I had to balance the experiences of meeting people, seeing new places, and traveling solo with affordable and easier-to-eat healthy cooking.
He explored farmers markets to find fresh, healthy ingredients. He also started weighing his food. Im not a person who wants to give something up. Im more deliberate and more conscious. Instead of a high-calorie, high-carb meal Ill have something steamed, fresher and leaner, he says.
On holidays and vacations he still tracked what he ate, but he gave himself the flexibility to go over budget.

The researchers wound up recruiting 61 volunteers, most of them middle-aged and inactive; all were overweight or obese. The study participants completed detailed questionnaires and online tests of their food preferences and behaviors, picking, for instance, between rapid-fire, on-screen pictures of different foods and also answering questions about bingeing on food and whether they found it hard to not overeat.
Fifteen of the volunteers then were asked to continue with their normal lives as a control group, while the other 46 began exercising, working out on exercise machines at a university facility five times a week for about 45 to 60 minutes or until they had burned about 500 calories per session. They continued this training for 12 weeks, eating as they liked at home.
Then everyone returned to the lab for weigh-ins and to repeat the original tests. Most, but not all, of the exercisers had shed a few pounds, while some of those in the control group had gained weight.
The men and women in the control group also showed little alteration in their feelings about food. But the exercisers reactions to pictures of and questions about high-calorie, fatty foods were new. They no longer found them quite so irresistible. In psychological terms, they showed less wanting for the most fattening foods.
Interestingly, their scores on measures of liking, or how much they expected to enjoy those same foods, remained unchanged and strong. They still felt that they would enjoy a cookie but did not feel quite the same drive to seek one out. They also reported fewer instances of recent binge eating.
Taken as a whole, these results suggest that, in addition to making us healthier, exercise might improve food reward and eating behavior traits linked to the susceptibility to overconsume, says Kristine Beaulieu, a research fellow and dietitian at the University of Leeds, who led the new study.
In other words, working out for a period of time could nudge us to rethink the kinds of foods we want to eat.

Singer and "The Voice UK" coach Olly Murs shared an incredible "buff" body transformation on Instagram, which he pulled off in just under two months.
Murs showed off his dramatic weight loss via Instagram on Tuesday with an image of himself on the left taken on January 2, and on the right his now newly-defined physique.
Happy with his results, Murs wrote in the caption: "Ain't bad for 35yr old! My ambition to be a 'butler in the buff' is coming true."
Murs told fans he decided to make a series of lifestyle changes in the New Year after he thought he was getting "massive."
"I was like 'f--- me I look massive' weight was doing me no favours, grumpy, no energy, sleeping was awful," Murs wrote.
Despite making "some adjustments," to his health, the singer still likes to indulge in some fast food as he concluded the caption with "... I'm actually buzzing right now I'm off to get a McDonald's."
Murs has provided his Instagram followers snippets of his fitness journey over the past seven weeks with a number of images of him working out at the gym.
In a post from one month ago, he even teased fans about a potential body transformation when he wrote: "Murs 2.0 is coming."
In a separate post, Murs also shared himself undergoing a gruelling plank workout.
In June 2019, the singer told fans on Instagram he was recovering from a "serious knee surgery," which saw his exercise regime halted for several months.
"I'm not quite sure how I'm going to cope sitting still like this for the next few months, its going to kill me but it's what's needed," Murrs wrote in a caption alongside an image of him in hospital.
Murs is also currently dating 27-year-old competitive bodybuilder and personal trainer Amelia Tank, who has helped him along his fitness journey he's previously uploaded images of them hiking together.

The turning point in my life- I was never really ashamed of being fat or overweight and didn't really pay heed to the comments people made behind my back. However, my turning point was when a teacher mocked me at school and made me stand in front of the class, scolding me for being overweight. This shattered my confidence and it was on that day I decided to lose weight and get fit.
My breakfast- Omelette, made with 3 egg whites. When I feel like having something different, I go for a plate of poha which is so healthy and filling.
My lunch - For lunch, I have a bowl of yellow daal, a serving of green veggies with one chapati. With this, I have some salad as well.
My dinner - 5 boiled eggs (without the yolk) and a salad bowl tossed in one tablespoon of olive oil.
Post-workout meal - Before going to the gym, I drink a big glass of protein shake (at least an hour before going). Sometimes, I eat a slice of brown bread with low-fat peanut butter spread (organic). I try to stick to my diet on most days, but on weekends, I treat myself with either a slice of pizza or a scoop of ice cream.
My workout- I work out for five days a week, for approximately 1.5 hours. I spend 45 minutes doing weight training and do 30 minutes of intensive cardio. I have realized that mixing weight training and cardio is the best way to lose fat and build muscle in a good way.
Fitness secret I unveiled - The biggest weight loss secret for me has been eating in moderation. Restricting portion size does not drain you of energy or make you feel hungry. Instead, it helps boost your metabolism.
How do I stay motivated?- The results I have achieved so far are the biggest motivators for me. If I compare my older pictures to how I look now, I feel an instant kick of motivation. Although I felt pretty embarrassed, I feel that I need to thank my teacher for pushing me to make the change.
Even though I lost weight slowly initially and hit the plateau, I did not lose hope at all. This is what I would like to tell anybody reading this. Keep working on yourself and sooner or later, you will see the results.
How do you ensure that you don't lose focus- The changes I see in myself makes me stay focused on the goal in mind and keep working on presenting a better version of myself.
What was the most difficult part of being?- The most difficult part of being overweight was that I couldn't perform physically strenuous activities on days. Even if the comments did not bug me, I realized that people look at you in a different way which deeply hurt me.
What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? - ten years down the lane I want to stay healthy and fit. I don't want to change my goal one bit. I just want to stay as healthy and fit as I am today. As they say, health is wealth.
What are the lifestyle changes you made? I overhauled my sedentary lifestyle by making some changes:
-Start my day by going for a 1 km jog in the morning-Having green tea, which is good for your immunity.-Drink at least 3-4 litres of water every day.

Speed Keto diet boosts weight loss but experts warn there could be side effects – The Sun

ANYONE who has attempted the keto diet will tell you it's highly restrictive - which makes it tough to stick to.
But fans of the high-fat, low-carb regime will probably also say that that it's helped them to achieve great weight loss results.

Now there is a new, and even tougher version called Speed Keto - a combination of keto and intermittent fasting.
There's evidence to suggest that both of these diets work, however, experts have warned that the diet is unsustainable and potentially dangerous.
And they say that if you're totally new to dieting it's likely the sudden extreme shift will bring some unpleasant side effects.
The Speed Keto diet was devised by self-proclaimed lifestyle coach Harlan Kilstein in 2018.
Dr Kilstein, who has a doctorate in education - not nutrition or any other field of medicine, claims it solves some of the "pain points" of the original keto diet.
He came up with it after becoming personally interested in keto for his own weight loss.
According to his website, people get frustrated constantly counting calories and macronutrients - carbs, fats and protein.
They will also see early results in the first couple of weeks but may find their progress stalls after that as the body reaches ketosis.
So Speed Keto is supposed to simplify the dieting process and help people get through any weight loss plateaus or struggles that come with the original keto plan.
The diet is a combination of traditional keto and intermittent fasting.
Keto requires cutting out carbs so that they make up just 5-10 per cent of your intake.
Instead you increase the amount of fat you eat to between 60-70 per cent, leaving around 15-30 per cent for protein.
The idea is that by eating fewer carbs your body goes into a state of 'ketosis' -when the body burns its fat stores for fuel rather than carbohydrates, leading to weight loss.
Meanwhile, intermittent fasting (IF) involves alternating between various periods of fasting and eating.
One of the most popular methods is the 16:8, in which you fast for 16 hours and eat during the 8-hour period.
So for Speed Keto, the aim is to eat just one meal a day that fits into the high-fat low-carb requirement.
Dietitians aren't exactly quick to recommend 'fad' diets, such as keto or intermittent fasting.
So, with this new version on the scene it's hardly surprising that many are warning against it.
Tony Castillo, nutrition consultant for RSP Nutrition, told Health:I dont see any pros for this diet.
"First of all, a diet program focusing on high fat, moderate protein, and low carbs is typically unsustainable and can be challenging to follow long term.
He also said restricted eating in this way can be dangerous for those with a history of eating disorders.
But some say that while it's not a sustainable way of eating, it's likely it will produce positive weight loss results.
Hillary Cecere, registered dietitian at Eat Clean Bro, told Women's Health: "I think keto and 'Speed Keto' diets will result in weight loss.
"Any time food is restricted and a calorie deficit occurs, so will weight loss, and when your eating window is smaller, you are more likely to consume less calories."
However, she added: "This diet is unsustainable. Once it's no longer being utilised, weight gain will happen."
She said that in order to maintain weight loss, it's important to follow something that is sustainable in the long-term.
Registered dietitian, Lauren Harris-Pincus, told Health: This diet was developed by someone who is not an MD or dietitian to sell you something.

Combining keto with intermittent fasting is not a magical solution.
"It simply reduces your eating window so people tend to consume fewer calories in a day since you cannot snack continuously.
She added that the only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit, i.e. reduce your calorie intake and increase your exercise.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, clinical director at patient.info, told The Sun Online: "It should only be used by people who are obese, or who are significantly overweight and also have other medical conditions.
"In studies, the average amount of weight lost by people taking this drug for weight loss was about 4-6kg over a year, and about 4.6kg over 3 years.
"Some people will lose more, some people less. But it clearly is not a miracle cure there really is no side-effect free miracle solution for obesity.
"This injection should only be used under close medical supervision, in addition to effective diet and lifestyle changes.
"Like any other licensed drug, it has side effects among the most common are feeling sick or being sick and diarrhoea."

The turning point: It was when I was detained in the second year during my graduation. At that point, I weighed around a massive 116 kilos and had become a laughing stock in my whole college. Even though I was very good at playing games like volleyball and cricket, I had to constantly face criticism because of my size. At that point, I was very depressed.
One day, I went to watch the movie 'Wanted' with my friends. Seeing Salman Khan in a police uniform and his incredibly fit physique changed something inside me. The movie motivated me so much that I decided to achieve a physique and personality just like him. I became a fan of Salman Khan and started getting up at 5 am from the very next day. I started jogging in my college ground and also began drinking lemon water in the morning.
Slowly, I started to increase the intensity of the workout and started running in the evening. I could see improvements in my body and decided to enrol in the gym. While my friends made fun of me, I knew I wanted to change my physique. By 2015, my weight had dropped to 84 kilos and I could do a 100 pushups in one go! When I look back, I am so glad that I made that decision as I am an inspector today with a fit body.
My breakfast: I usually wake up at 5 in the morning and have a glass of warm water with a dash of lemon. At 8 am I eat 4 egg whites with 3 slices of brown bread.
My lunch: I make it a point to have my lunch at a sharp 12 o'clock in the afternoon. I have a small bowl of white or brown rice, a cup of boiled vegetables and 250 grams of fish or chicken fried in olive oil.
My dinner: 2 chapatis and a portion of chicken or fish or soybean or paneer. Besides these three basic meals, I take protein shakes after my workout.
My workout: Here is a breakdown of my workout routine:

Monday: Chest, back and abs(optional cardio)
Tuesday: Shoulder, biceps, triceps and forearms
Wednesday: Legs and abs

Saturday: Legs and cardio
Low-calorie recipes I swear by: I have made it a point to use extra virgin olive to cook anything I have to eat. So, from chicken fry to soybean masala, I use this oil.
Fitness secret I unveiled: I have realised that there is no shortcut to fitness. You have to train regularly with unwavering focus and the result will be here for all to see. There was a day when I could not even do a single push up but now I can do 80 push-ups non-stop.
How do I stay motivated? The feeling that I get when I wear my uniform and ride my Royal Enfield is unmatchable. I also feel really confident when I am showered with praises and it makes me feel like all the hard work was worth it. Moreover, my idol Salman Khan is the reason I started this weight loss journey and he remains my biggest motivation.
How do you ensure you dont lose focus? I am not usually a morning person but because of my job profile, I dont get time to work out during the evening. So, I have started to push myself to work out in the morning and the pump in my body after a hardcore gyming session ensures that I stay focussed.
What is the most difficult part of being overweight? It was definitely the fact that I had become a laughing stock and the centre of jokes in my college. Moreover, no girl wanted to hang out with me because of my size. It was really depressing.
What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I havent really thought so far. I am just focusing on the present and working out really hard as I dont want to gain weight again. All I know is that I wish to stay fit and healthy for the years to come.
What are the lifestyle changes you made? Earlier, I used to eat anything and everything. I also used to steal eggs from my refrigerator after my mom went to work. This is because my parents used to be really worried about my growing weight and they had restricted my diet. Now, I have made it a point to eat right and in the right proportions. I have completely given up on junk and processed food items and I have become really choosy about what I put in my mouth. I avoid oily and spicy food items as well.
