How to lose belly fat: 6 easy ways to burn visceral fat, feel fitter and reveal your abs in 2020 – T3

Posted: February 24, 2020 at 3:50 am

The question of how to lose belly fat is one that resounds around the internet because it's one of those universal Google questions. It's actually quite meaningless, because targeting 'belly fat' is very very hard. Losing fat in general, some of which will be around your belly, is fairly easy though. So, if you want to burn belly fat and get fit, this is our 'six-pack' ho ho of tips, cheats and strategies. Although there's no magic bullet, there are ways to burn belly fat (or 'lose weight' as we used to call it) that are tried, trusted and true.

Important note here, everyone: Belly fat these days is often referred to as visceral fat because that sounds scarier. If you really need to shed visceral fat because it's endangering your life, that is an area where you should probably be seeking medical advice. This is about slimming down a bit.

Our lose belly fat tips aren't necessarily quick, and this is not about telling you how to get six pack abs although we have a few articles on that topic. No, this is just a six pack of tips to getting a healthier life and feeling comfortable with the girth of your mid-riff. We're not looking to fat shame anyone here or totally bro out, we're just offering advice.

We've got some great tips, a few cheeky shortcuts and key strategies to lose belly fat quickly, healthily and sustainably. As we just said, there are no quick fixes here; we want you to develop habits that ensure you'll stay trim for good.Weve also got the lowdown on the best exercises to lose belly fat, and all the gear youll need to get started although, of course, the most important 'gear' is the bit between your ears.

There's no hard-and-fast rule for slim-down success: the best way to lose belly fat is the way that works around your lifestyle. If you follow an unsustainable plan, you won't last: it's as simple as that. In this article we lay out six principles that are applicable to everyone, whether you're a total beginner starting your weight-loss journey or a seasoned pro who fell off the wagon over Christmas.

These guiding lights will keep you on the straight and narrow, whether you've got time to hit the gym every day or a shift worker looking to manage your schedule. Dont try to take on more than you can reasonably fit into one day. And, despite the name of this feature, don't fixate on 'belly fat'. It's important to reduce visceral fat, which does tend to lurk around the belly area, but that is best achieved by trying to slim down and tune up overall.

Here are six strategies to help you start losing weight.

The short answer to the question of how to lose belly fat is to burn more calories than you consume on a regular basis. In the fitness world, this is known as achieving a "calorie deficit".

If this sounds like a waking nightmare, there's a trick to it: what you need to do is ensure youre eating the correct kind of food to make sure you feel full and sated, even when consuming fewer calories than you're burning off. Certain foods are "empty calories" while others release energy slowly, keeping you fuller for longer.

But before that, you'll need to find a good way to track your calories burned and calories taken in. The free MyFitnessPal app is one of the best ways to record your calorie intake, but to track your calories burned, you'll need a dedicated fitness tracker. If you already own a smartwatch, most will offer calorie tracking as standard, but for those yet to make the plunge, the Fitbit Versa Lite is the best activity tracker you can buy right now. Check out the deal below.

Oh, and staying hydrated is crucial, as well

Fitbit Versa Lite | was 149.99 | now 124.95 at AmazonThe Fitbit Versa Lite is the best affordable fitness tracker or smartwatch you can buy.It tracks deep and light sleep, steps, distance and calories, but that is barely scraping the surface of its capabilities. Intermittent fasting is becoming more and more popular. It involves significantly cutting calories or abstaining from food altogether for a portion of the day or week, and then cramming all your calories into a much shorter time window.

The best-known intermittent fasting plan is the 5:2 diet, where you eat as you normally would (although hopefully a bit healthier) for five days a week, then scoff no more than 600 calories two days a week. There are also variants of this diet where you consume almost no calories, two days per week. This is much more doable than it sounds, so long as you are in good general health, but it's not exactly fun.

However, for trainees who are serious but not that serious, there's the 16:8 diet. With this diet you have only 8 hours a day to fit all your meals in, but can only drink water (and maybe some black coffee, if you're feeling naughty) within a 16 hour fasting period outside of those 8 hours. Most choose to eat from 10am to 6pm, but as long as you stay within an eight hour window, you can start and finish at any time of the day. This isHugh Jackman's strategy, so if you have ever wanted to be in Wolverine shape

Why try fasting, though? Well, during the fasting period the body will run out of sugar to run on, and so will start eating up the bodys fat stores. The big negative is the adjustment period: if you're used to a big breakfast or an early dinner, a 16-hour fast feels tough at first, especially if you're exercising. You're going to get seriously cranky.

Dead set on having chips? An air fryer can deliver a lot of the delicious taste with less of the not-quite-so-delicious oil

If you eat fried food all the time, switching to an air fryer will definitely cause you to lose weight unless buying one causes you to start eating loads of chocolate because you've reduced your fat intake. No, it doesn't taste as delicious as proper fried food of course not but it turns out meals with a good fried/roasted taste, but with up to 80% lower fat content.

If you don't eat fried food all the time but like to treat yourself now and then, switching to an air fryer could still help with you to lose weight. Even with a solid balanced diet and a good workout ethic, there will come a time when your willpower will falter and you'll want to fall back on your old favourites, like fried chicken, fish, chips and all the other foods you love normally dripping with grease. If you schedule in cheat days and do this in a controlled way, it's good to know you're cooking these foods in a way that still helps you hit your goals.

Enter the air fryer. The best air fryers are revolutionary pieces of kit that use hot air combined with a teaspoon of oil (as opposed to the gallons of oil found in the deep-fat variety) to cook your crispy favourites. If kitchen space and budget is no object, you can cook a whole chicken in the Philips Airfryer XXL, but if you're after something a little more economical, Ninjas AF100UK Air Fryer is lightweight, compact and versatile, perfect for portion control. Check it out below.

Ninja AF100UK Air Fryer | was 119.00 | now 89.00 at AmazonFry food guilt-free using comparatively very little oil and a blast of hot air. If you're a junk food addict, it's one of the best ways to arrange your cheat days so that you're still having guilt-free food while fitting your macros, calorie count or diet of choice. The Ninja model is lightweight, compact and versatile, also capable of roasting, dehydrating and reheating food in addition to the air fry function.View Deal

This is just one way to have your (fried) cake and eat it too. Swapping high-calorie pints of ice cream to the low-calorie versions like Halo Top or Oppo, or switching out cholesterol-laden butter for a healthier olive spread, are other easy ways you can make relatively simple lifestyle choices and still keep weight off.

There are two main types of exercise: cardio training and weights, otherwise known as resistance training.Although cardio burns a lot of calories while you do it, weight training builds muscle which burns more than fat as you go about your day. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you'll burn even when not working out.

Resistance training may seem scary if you're doing it for the first time, especially in the gym when the area's dominated by serious lifters, but you dont have to start adding big plates to the bar right now. There's plenty of ways to get started at home with smaller weights such as dumbbells, kettlebells and even medicine balls.

Were not going to list every single lifting exercise, so why not pick the body part you want to start toning up and check out some of our muscle-building how-tos. One you've done that, grab one of the best dumbbell sets on the market. They're not just for arms: you can use a dumbbell to work your core, shoulders, and even your legs with combination movements. Once you're comfortable in your own home, you can move on to more advanced equipment at the gym.

BodyPower 20 kg Cast Iron Spinlock Dumbbell set | was 59.99 | now 39.99 from Fitness SuperstoreYou just can't beat a good old pair of cast iron weights, and a testament to this is the fact they can be found under the beds of dads and granddads up and down the country. Get your own and they will last a lifetime and for all of their noisy, palm-chafing downsides, there is a kind of nostalgic loveliness to the spin collar set-up.View Deal

All of this aside, dont neglect cardio, as regular cardio workouts are important for fitness and stamina.

Electric Muscle Stimulation can help your muscles recover faster

It may seem gimmicky when you unwrap your new six-pack vibrating belt, complete with a picture of Ronaldo on the box, but don't roll your eyes just yet. While you can't just sit there eating crisps and expect to get ripped, Electric Muscle Stimulators can help as part of a controlled dietary and exercise plan.

EMS can cause the muscles to contract, essentially tensing and untensing rapidly. During downtime post-workout, you can continue to encourage muscle growth with EMS, while the right bit of kit can also encourage faster recovery, allowing you to get back in the gym all the quicker. According to the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, EMS stimulates the muscle in the same way as a massage, prepping it for the next go-round.

It's not a bona fide shortcut to a six-pack, but it can speed up the muscle-building process with regular use.

Our top choice is always SIXPAD as used by Cristiano Ronaldo, a man who takes great pride in his body. Perhaps a little too much pride, the unkind or jealous might say. Amazon also sells all manner of abs belts by brands we have never heard of, for about 20. Needless to say we dont recommend these.

PowerDot 2.0 - Smart Electric Muscle Stimulator | now 185 at AmazonAlternatively, the PowerDot 2.0 is a smartphone-controlled muscle stimulating monster. This neat muscle stimulator works from your phone, allowing you to control intensity, stimulation and goal. Planks are a tough abs workout and a great end-of-workout finisher

(Image credit: Taco Fleur from Pixabay)

As well doing both muscle-building and cardio exercises, if you want to lose belly fat its also important to switch up the pace of your workout.

Every time you workout, you should exercise using both steady state (working hard but not at max capacity, such as during brisk jog) and high intensity (going flat out, like sprinting) to torch your abdominal fat.

Steady state or aerobic exercises include cycling, running or uphill hiking. Its a crucial part of losing belly fat because it burns through your fat stores. However, it also uses your sugar stores for energy first, so you need to do steady-state for long enough to use up all that sugar before it eats into your fat reserves.

High intensity workouts use mainly sugar for fuel, so they don't hit the fat right away, but it does help in building muscle, which will help you torch fat even on days you're not exercising. Explosive weight lifting, sprinting and HIIT-friendly exercises like mountain climbers are all great high-intensity exercises.

A good fitness tracker will help you to gauge the intensity of your workout by monitoring your heart rate. For overall fitness trackers, check out the Fitbit Versa Lite above, but for a dedicated running watch, you can't beat the Garmin Forerunner 645, the best on the market right now.

Find out more about heart rate zone training

Garmin Forerunner 645 | now 276.93 at AmazonGarmin dominates the running/fitness watch category so totally, it's almost embarrassing for the competition. The most recent addition to their premium line, the Garmin 645, incorporates GPS and wrist heart-rate tracking, which is good for monitoring your resting and all-day rates. The 645 crunches a lot of data to suggest recovery times, make a decent stab at estimating your VO2 Max, tell you how optimal your training load and lots, lots more.View Deal

FitBit Aria 2 smart bathroom scale | was 119.95 | now 105.00 on AmazonThis clever scaletells you your weight, BMI and body fat percentage which is all a lot of people want. It then reports this to your Fitbit account, so you can monitor your weight trends and use it alongside your Fitbit wearable's daily calorie-burn estimates. Add MyFitnessPal or Fitbit's own dietary features and you can then sync your meal-plans, daily calories consumed and weight goals, if you want.View Deal

The most important thing to bear in mind is this: losing weight takes time. You'll have setbacks and slip-ups, but if you stay committed to your goal, you'll be fitter and healthier in 2020, building up great habits for many years ahead.

According to promos, the two will also be facing a plethora of trust issues this season as a clip shows Stephanie shouting at Erika about an ex, so their love story will have plenty of ups and downs in the coming weeks.

David, a 60-year-old computer programmer, and Lana, 27, have a very Caesar-and-Maria-like storyline this season. David met Lana through a Ukrainian dating website after a series of failed relationships led him to search for love abroad. The two quickly fell in love and have now been together for seven years, although their relationship has been strictly long-distance. The Nevada native has tried to meet Lana in person three different times, but each trip fell through, with Lana having a different excuse every time (she stood him up once, her brother died the second time, and she had a medical issue the third). David has spent upwards of $100,000 on the Slavic beauty over the course of their relationship, and he is heading back to Ukraine one last time; however, if Lana stands him up again, David swore he would cut her off financially, for good.

Fans should already be familiar with Darcey and Tom, who appeared on Season 3 ofBefore the 90 Days. The reality couple faced many ups and downs throughout their time on the show, and they ended the season on very uncertain terms. Now, Darcey is back for another shot at love while she and Tom attempt to work out the problems in their relationship, which included some trust issues, an overly-emotional Darcey, and an English James Bond who just couldnt tell his girlfriend he loved her. Will Darcey and Tom finally get on the same page with their relationship, or will Darcey be left heartbroken and alone once again?

MATCHUPS TO TARGET:

#6 PAUL FELDER 17-4 (+130) VS #7 DAN HOOKER 19-8 (-150)

In every preview, if you havent noticed, I always discuss the main event as a fight target. This may be just the one to simply sit back and watch. These two will go at it in what looks to be the front runner for fight of the night even before the first bell. Both are coming in with back-to-back wins, looking to move up to possibly a contender eliminator-type matchup with a win Saturday night.

Felder will bring his in your face kickboxing with a strong clinch game. Hooker, the younger of the two, will look to utilize his range while controlling the pace, gunning for more output and keeping the dangerous Felder on his heels. Hooker will also have the crowd in his pocket and youd have to think when he lands anything the place will be loud.

Hooker opened up at -120 and has been bet up to -150 and continues to climb. Im really not surprised. That said, its hard to not find value in Felder. The guy is tougher than the steak I ate last night, and he only has two losses in the last five years. In both of those losses, he actually was injured. Against Francisco Trinaldo in 2016, the fight was stopped after a cut over his right eye just continued to get worse until the doctor called for the stop. Felder was heated as he was looking to continue. In his other loss against Mike Perry, Felder not only took the fight on short notice going up a weight division, but broke his right arm early on in the fight and continued on, losing a split decision. Like I said, the guy is tough. If you take away those injuries, we could be talking about a guy that hasnt lost in the last five years.

Hooker himself only has one loss in his last seven fights, and that was against Edson Barboza, the man Felder just recently beat. Its important to note that Felder actually commentated that Hooker/Barboza fight ringside, and saw first hand what it will take to beat this guy: leg kicks. Watch for Felder to close the range of Hooker, as this will be key for him in this matchup, and also mix in some leg kicks (just as Barboza did) right from the get go. Weve seen Hooker not check kicks consistently in the past, which could not only sway some momentum in Felders direction, but also give him the advantage if this one goes into the later rounds. This to me looks like a live dog opportunity with Felder in this spot.

Prediction: Paul Felder

#14 KAROLINA KOWALKIEWICZ 12-5 (+220) VS YAN XIAONAN 11-1 (-260)

Kowalkiewicz has dropped three straight while Xiaonan is looking to make it 10 wins in a row with a victory in this spot. I believe we see her get it done as well.

When we go back and look atKowalkiewiczs recent streak, she suffered a nasty KO loss to former champ Jessica Andrade in less than two minutes, and followed that up with two decisive losses against Michelle Waterson and Alexa Grasso. She hasnt won a single round in that span.

Although this will be a step up forXiaonan, I believe her fighting style will pose problems forKowalkiewicz.Xiaonanis fast, constantly throws combos and has some power. As of late, we havent seen the chin or output fromKowalkiewicz. Shes fought fairly hesitantoffensivelyin comparison to what we saw from her before that knockout defeat. This is a tough spot to be in mentally too, after traveling 20+ hours from Poland to get here with this recent stretch of losses and a potential pink slip weighing on your mind.

Xiaonan's the pick for me. Im not much of a parlay player, but this could be a spot to pair up with Dobson or Turner.

Prediction: Yan Xiaonan

JALIN TURNER 8-5 (-210) VS JOSHUA CULIBAO 8-0 (+175)

Turner was steamed a bit after weigh-ins and the line has shot up to -230 in some spots. Im not saying the weigh-ins are why, but Culibao looked pretty fluffy for a lightweight.

Turner will have a five-inch height advantage, along with four inches of reach on his side against Culibao, who is making his debut under the bright lights. Although Turner has been KOd three times and his chin is suspect, I dont see him having any issues here.

Turner comes out fast, and while this kid is still looking to calm his nerves, Turner will probably take control and put him in danger early. All of Turners eight victories have come by way of finish in the first round. Interestingly enough, any fight of his that has gone past that initial round, he has lost. No pressure.

Prediction: Jalin Turner

How Colin O’Brady crossed the world’s most unforgiving place in 54 days – New York Post

Posted: February 23, 2020 at 1:41 am

Adventurer Colin OBrady felt like his hands were being crushed.

It was his 48th day trudging through Antarctica, attempting to become the first person ever to walk the 930 miles from one end of the continent to the other completely unassisted.

But battling through a particularly nasty storm, the 12-hour days spent gripping ski poles combined with wind chill temperatures as low as -112 degrees Fahrenheit left him barely able to close his hands.

Amidst his pain and confusion, as he set up his tent, he neglected to ground it to his sled. A wind gust transformed it into a sail, and OBrady, 33, grabbed it in a panic, as its loss would have meant certain death from exposure.

If I lost my grip, everything that kept me alive would be gone in seconds, OBrady writes in his bestselling memoir The Impossible First: From Fire to Ice Crossing Antarctica Alone, (Scribner), out now.

With no backup shelter and no hope of rescue, the end would come relatively soon, he explains.

But as the tent jerked over my head like a flag, he was saved by a brief lull in the wind.

I yanked the tent toward my body and wrestled it to the ground, he writes. After one of the most intense and fearful moments of my life, I had the tent back under control. I had my home back.

OBrady, an experienced triathlete from Portland, Ore., already held the world record for finishing The Explorers Grand Slam climbing to the tallest peak on all seven continents, including Mount Everest, and reaching the North and South Poles in just 139 days.

While he couldnt know exactly how long the journey would take the weather was an all-encompassing variable OBrady initially planned to carry 70 days worth of fuel and food (eating 7,000 calories per day), which would have put his sled at over 400 pounds. He also brought a sleeping bag specially designed for Arctic temperatures and a portable stove.

But on the plane to Antarctica in late October 2018 the beginning of the continents summer season he found himself seated next to the most intimidating man Id ever met. He turned out to be the explorer OBrady would be competing against.

Captain Louis Rudd, 49, spent three decades in the British military and had participated in previous expeditions to the South Pole.

Rudd regaled OBrady with stories of his 2011 trip to the South Pole alongside some of the worlds greatest adventurers.

It was a brutal expedition, Rudd said. Severe storms. Henry [Worsley] and I each lost more than four stone. Thats something like sixty pounds to you Yanks.

Worsley, a noted explorer, had died in 2016 attempting the same excursion they were now en route to. An Englishman named Ben Saunders also attempted the feat in 2017 but abandoned the effort before the end.

Rudd was getting inside my head, OBrady writes, and with every hour, my confidence was shrinking.

After Rudd told OBrady he had packed for only 5,500 calories per day leaving his sled considerably lighter OBrady removed five days worth of food in a panic.

To make matters worse, the next morning Rudd informed him that instead of starting several hundred miles from where OBrady was beginning his route, hed begin his journey just one mile away essentially taking the same path.

Suddenly, it was game on.

I couldnt help but cry ... the tears immediately froze to my face.

OBrady officially began his excursion on Nov. 3, 2018, when a plane dropped him off at the designated spot in -13 degree weather.

By this point, he had decided to drop his food rations down to 60 days. But even after he took his first steps, he discovered that he could barely move the 375-pound sled, his tent and other supplies.

Something was very wrong and I couldnt help but cry, he writes. I quickly learned how Antarctica dealt with such pity; the tears immediately froze to my face.

As if on cue, he then noticed a figure in the distance: Rudd, pulling his sled with no hesitation.

Feeling defeated, OBrady called his wife/business partner, Jenna, from his satellite phone. Jenna took charge, telling OBrady theyd recalibrate his journey. She told him to set up camp just a half mile away, then aim for six miles the following day.

Back at home, Jenna and OBradys mother did the math on the weight of his sled and the calories hed need for the trip. The next day, Jenna texted him, telling him to remove five days of food, which brought him down to a 55-day supply.

OBrady lightened his load and continued on, traveling nine miles that day. His journey had now begun in earnest.

While one could anticipate going slightly mad surrounded by nothing but whiteness for days, weeks, months on end, OBrady was burdened by enough immediate and practical considerations determining how long he could walk, when to set up camp, thinking about Rudd, etc. that his mind was kept busy.

He did speak with Jenna daily, giving her updates and sending her pictures through a satellite modem that she would then post to his Instagram account. Otherwise, his odyssey became almost contemplative.

The weirdest thing of all about [my] deep internal dialogue was that somehow it pulled me deeper inside myself to the zone where the reality of my race with Rudd could be stilled, he writes.

On the morning of day six, OBrady saw a ghostly image in the distance a red tent. When Rudd leaned out and waved, a stunned OBrady waved back and continued on.

An hour later, OBrady saw Rudd pushing on about a hundred yards behind him, following his tracks.

It was another grizzled veteran polar trick, OBrady writes. I was functioning as his navigational beacon, which meant he could relax a bit and not use his compass so much.

OBrady slowed so Rudd could catch up. Good morning mate, Rudd said. Ive got a bit of a suggestion for you.

OBrady, believing Rudd was trying to undermine his confidence, put an end to it.

Weve both announced to the world that were trying to be the first, OBrady said. Look, I hope we both make a safe crossing. But were doing this solo, so let this be the last time that we speak until this is over.

Rudd gave OBrady an inscrutable stare and continued on his way. The two men trudged along for the next eleven hours in the worlds slowest footrace before Rudd stopped and set up camp.

The encounter changed something in OBrady.

I needed to keep going in a way I hadnt before, he writes. I vowed that Id go as long as he did, and then an hour longer. If he went nine hours, Id go ten. If he went ten, Id go eleven.

OBrady walked 20 miles that day, his best distance yet.

During one particularly rough stretch a few weeks later, he decided to listen to music for the first time on the trip and played Paul Simons Graceland, a cherished album from his youth. He danced on the ice and it felt like he was hearing the song for the first time.

By the 35th day, OBrady had traveled 495 miles. Calling Jenna while already close to sleep, he wanted nothing more than to shut his eyes when she gave him an errand.

I know youre tired, she said. But I need you to call this number.

OBrady tried to beg off the new assignment, but Jenna was insistent. So OBrady called the number she gave him on his satellite phone, and a man answered.

Next thing he knew, he was talking to Paul Simon.

OBrady, it turns out, had posted on Instagram about listening to Graceland in Antarctica, and somehow Jenna tracked the singer down.

Simon asked him about the Antarctic chill, what other music he listened to there (his only six albums also included the Grateful Deads American Beauty and Bob Marleys Legend), and, unironically, the sound of Antarctic silence.

Its an old songwriters cliche, but its true the spaces between the notes are the most important parts of any song, Simon told him. So whats that like?

The silence can open a door, OBrady responded, and then theres a whole world beyond that, especially down here where the empty ice goes on forever.

By day 41, OBrady had 15 days worth of food left and estimated he still had 25 days until he reached the finish line. While he carried no scale, it was clear hed lost a frightening amount of weight.

Im looking down at my body and I dont recognize it, he told Jenna that night. Im experiencing rapid weight loss [and] my wristwatch is sliding around on my arm.

He had been eating 7,000 calories a day, including oatmeal and protein powder, freeze-dried dinners and ramen that hed heat up, and protein bars made specially for him by a Wisconsin nutritional supplement company that called them Colin bars. But while he was burning 10,000 calories a day, leaving him already deficient, he would now be reducing his daily intake to less than 6,000.

His hunger combined with the threadbare surroundings and months of exertion began to cloud his thinking.

On his 46th day out, he began to wonder if Rudd, then 35 miles behind him, according to Jenna, who was following his journey via his GPS, might have been a figment of his imagination.

The more I thought about it, the weirder it seemed. Rudds existence was almost too convenient, he writes. Maybe Id needed a Rudd, and so Id created him in my mind.

By day 53, with the end almost in sight, he decided to finish the trek in one massive 40-hour push. He officially completed his journey on day 54, reaching the finish line two-and-a-half days ahead of Rudd.

Before he did, though, he stopped to take it all in one final time, to thank the universe for such a remarkable adventure and to give thanks to the competitor who inspired his victory.

Youre out there somewhere, Lou, and Id like to express my gratitude, he said into the void. Youve pushed me, and made me better for it. I hope your passage is safe.

After accomplishing his goal, he waited for Rudd to complete his own journey, in order to make a statement of respect, to honor a worthy competitor.

When Rudd finally arrived, he looked horrible and radiant at the same time, like the soldier he was, OBrady writes.

On the second night, the two warriors met outside Rudds tent to swap stories of their journeys. Despite the differences that separated us and always would, OBrady writes, we now had a bond that would last forever. We both leaned in and shared a warm hug.

How Many Carbs Should I Eat A Day If I’m Trying To Lose Weight? – Pulse Live Kenya

Posted: February 23, 2020 at 1:41 am

There's a good chance you just thought of carbs. I mean, the most popular diets out there right nowlike Whole30 and the keto diet focus on limiting carb intake, and they seem to yield pretty legit results for a lot of people. So it only makes sense that if you're looking to lose weight, you'd think to nix carbs from your diet first, right?

You're not wrong...and you're not totally right. Carbohydrates are an important nutrient, and there are a lot of misconceptions about when and how to eat carbs when weight loss is your goal. Also, cutting carbs can be...really hard (pasta! bread! granola!).

Luckily, nixing carbohydrates altogether isn't necessary for weight loss in fact, most people can lose weight without cutting carbs drastically, says Christy Brissette, RD, owner of 80 Twenty Nutrition in Chicago. Let's get into allll things cutting down on carbs for weight loss.

Carbohydrates are nutrients, and they're the most important source of energy for your body, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine . Your digestive system converts carbs into glucose (aka, sugar), which your body then uses for energy for your cells, tissues, and organs.

Carbs are also split into two different categories: simple and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbs include dairy, fruits, and vegetables; while complex carbs include whole grains, starchy vegetables, and legumes.

Your body tends to digest simple carbs more quickly, while complex carbs provide a longer-lasting source of energy. But you do need both types of carbs for a balanced diet, BTW.

Dietary guidelines recommend you get between 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories from carbohydrates , Brissette says. But since everyone needs a different number of calories every day, there is no set number of carbs that equals a low carb diet for everyone. If you know how many calories you typically consume daily, you can do a little math to find your low-carb range: For example, if youre eating 1,800 calories per day, that equates to 203 to 293 grams of carbs per day.

Dropping carbs below the 45 to 65 percent range isnt recommended for most people because it makes getting all of your vitamins and minerals each day far more challenging, says Brissette.

With that in mind, you might have to make some modifications in order to find the sweet spot that works best for you and your weight-loss goals, says Liz Blom , RD, a Minnesota-based nutrition and wellness coach.

In general, you want to get 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories from carbohydrates.

She suggests getting about 45 percent of your daily calories from carbs if you're trying to lose weight, and using a tool like MyFitnessPal to track your intake. If you dont lose any weight after the first week, you can try going lower, says Blom. Conversely, if you start losing weight but begin to feel super sluggish, try upping your carbohydrate intake a bit and see how you feel and how your weight responds.

Its also important to note that the amount of your daily calories that should come from carbs is often influenced by several different factors, like activity level, body composition, age, and existing medical conditions.

According to Danielle Schaub, RD, culinary and nutrition manager for Territory Foods , you might want to aim for the lower end of the carb range if you:

On the other hand, says Schaub, you might want to aim for the higher end of the carb range if you:

Still, you probably want to make sure your carbohydrate intake doesnt surpass 65 percent of your daily calorie intake, says Blom, if you're aiming to lose weight. This will leave less room for protein and healthy fat intake, which will support satiety and other weight-loss benefits, she notes.

The key to maintaining your carb control is to load up on wholesome varieties of carbohydrates, like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and even dairy products, and keep your portions in check , says Blom. These healthy sources of carbs are also packed with fiber, so they'll fill you up faster and curb your appetite better than, say, pasta and doughnuts.

We already filled you in on the difference between simple and complex carbs: simple carbs are quickly and easily digested while complex ones take longer (but translate into longer-lasting energy).

Some examples of simple carbs include:

Again, simple carbs aren't "bad," so you don't need to nix them altogether. But choosing complex carbs to make up your carb intake more often can help lead to weight loss.

Some examples of complex carbs include:

You can learn more about why these foods fall into the complex carb category in the gallery below. Ideally, you'll be loading up on these kinds of carbs to make up your carb intake each day.

On a very basic level, weight loss happens when the number of calories consumed is less than the number of calories burned. Eating low-carb is one way to get there, but its not the only way, says Schaub. More important than the sheer amount of carbs is the kind of carbs you eat; replacing simple carbs, like refined grains and sugar, with complex ones, like carbs from veggies and legumes, can have many of the same low-carb benefits.

Fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and dairy all contain carbohydrates but are minimally processed and loaded with fiber and other nutrientsno research has ever shown that eating these types of carbs hinders healthy weight loss, Schaub explains, adding that the carbs found in processed foods like pasta, bagels, muffins, crackers, soda, and candy dont contain many nutrients and are the main culprits for weight gain and metabolic issues.

For example, a 2017 review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health suggests that simple carbs like sugars and sweeteners may increase a populations rate of obesity, where complex carbs like whole-grain cereal may contribute to an overall decrease in obesity rates.

Aside from the difference in health benefits between simple and complex carbs, Schaub says there are two other ways a low-carb diet can lead to weight loss. First, it prevents spikes in blood sugar while also improving insulin sensitivity. This means youll feel hungry less often and be less likely to store energy as fat. A 2018 study in the British Medical Journal found that a low-carb diet increased the amount of caloric energy expended, making it a potentially reliable way to treat obesity (especially if you have high levels of insulin).

When you limit carbs, youre also more likely to get more of your daily calories from protein and fat instead, both of which are more filling than carbs. You may eat fewer calories overall because youre more satisfied by what you are eating, says Schaub.

For sure. Some people report feeling better on a lower-carb diet, while others feel exhausted and cant function well. Carbohydrates are also known to boost athletic performance, especially at a high intensity.

Athletes need carbohydrate-rich foods before training to store more glycogen in their muscles to fuel their working muscles. They also need a source of quick-burning carbs during intense exercise or endurance exercise, and more carbs after exercise to replenish and recover, she says.

Also important: Eating too few carbs (under 100 grams a day) could possibly impact your memory, according to the Institute of Medicine per the USDA. Drastically slashing carbs may also have a impact on your mood, per Brissette.

Carbs are your brains preferred energy source, and they boost the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that lifts your mood and makes you feel happy, Brissette says. Thats why low-carb diets are associated with a higher risk of depression.

Rather than going right to a very low-carb diet such as the keto diet to lose weight, Brissette encourages her clients to start by emphasizing minimally processed complex carbs, reducing portion sizes, and increasing the amounts of non-starchy vegetables theyre eating.

The bottom line: There is a healthy range of carb consumption, theres no one-size-fits-all recommendation for exactly how many to eat every day. You have to consider your lifestyle, age, and overall health when figuring out the right number for you.

Wilder vs Fury 2 result: Tyson Fury wins in seventh round as Deontay Wilder corner throws in towel – The Telegraph

Posted: February 23, 2020 at 1:41 am

Good evening, good morning, wherever you are. A huge boxing event, a huge sporting event: a classic match-up between a power puncher and a classy boxer. They fought to draw last time out, you can make a great case for each of them to go one better tonight, and the eyes of the sporting world are on this.

Here is our chief sportswriter Paul Hayward, who is in Las Vegas.

The best way to explain it is to list the fightersTyson Furywill joinif he seizes the most prestigious belt in boxing: the World Boxing Council heavyweight title, which shines brightest in the neoncity.

Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and nowDeontay Wilder, who has owned it since Jan 17, 2015. Modern boxing is littered with titles but this one has retained its allure and authenticity.

Tyson Fury can join the greats but needs to avoidDeontay Wilder'sAlabama hammer

Meanwhile, our boxing correspondent Gareth A Davies sets the scene here.

The truth is that the margins are on a knife-edge. The styles of the two men are utterly converse, and the result wholly unpredictable. Yet we know this: Fury is leagues above Wilder as a pure boxer, with skills defying his 6ft 9ins, 19st physique. In the other corner, Wilder has power in his hands which is far above that which can be mustered by Fury. The American has an equalising punch in both fists.

Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder come together in clash of styles which will crown heavyweight king

The fight is being shown on BT Sport Box Office in the UK, if you fancy that, or you can obviously follow the action with us here on this blog for the attractive price of zero pounds and zero pence.

That's Paul and Gareth, what do some other experts thinks is going to happen?

Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury 2 predictions:Who the experts think will win

One man who will surely be paying more than the average amount of interest in the evening's action is Anthony Joshua. Here's what the other heavyweight champion thinks:

I think Fury wins. I said it. I think the man that nearly done it the first time wont get it wrong the second time.

I think that he came close the first time to the point of a draw, it wasnt like a 12-round masterclass then got battered in the 12th and that just separated it.

It was a draw, it was that close. So I just think Tyson Fury is going to correct his wrongs and come back and win.

Richard Groves: We can’t leave them behind – Winston-Salem Journal

Posted: February 23, 2020 at 1:41 am

By the year 2000 all children will enter school ready to learn.

National Education Panel, 1991.

Like other well-intended programs that set overly optimistic goals, Ready to Learn fell short. A headline from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in March 2019 shows how far short it fell: Nearly half of Floridas children are not ready for kindergarten.

Florida is not unique in failing to reach the goal.

A project sponsored by the Center for Children and Families of the Brookings Institute in 2012 found that while 75% of children from moderate income and higher income families were ready for school at age five, just 48% of poor children were.

Why is that a big deal? Theyre 5 years old. They will catch up, right?

According to Deborah Stipek, former dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, Childrens skills at the beginning of kindergarten strongly predict their achievement throughout their schooling.

Speaking at the Clergy Consortium for Education and Anti-poverty in the City of Winston-Salem in January, Don Flow said, For children born into poverty, reading on grade level by third grade dramatically increases their likelihood of escaping poverty.

If that sounds extravagant, consider a study funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation that found that 16% of children who were not reading proficiently at the end of third grade did not graduate from high school. That number ballooned to 35% for children who were poor and lived in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty.

Put simply: Too many children who start behind never catch up.

Why are some children not ready for kindergarten?

The Brookings Institute project found that the key influences on school readiness include poverty, preschool attendance, parenting behavior, parents education, maternal depression, prenatal exposure to tobacco, and low birth weight.

What is striking about the factors that influence a childs readiness for kindergarten is that, with the exception of universal pre-kindergarten, none of them fall within the purview of the public school system.

Who is addressing the factors that influence a childs prospects before she or he begins school?

That was a rhetorical question when I asked it, but Claudia Barrett, executive director of Imprints Cares, answered quickly, We are.

Imprints Cares most intensive program uses materials provided by Parents as Teachers, which promotes optimal early development, learning and health of young children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers. (My emphasis.)

If it is true and common sense says it is that the parent is the childs first teacher, it stands to reason that preparing children, especially children from low income families, for school begins with the parents and the home.

Imprints Cares family educators commit to visiting families twice a month from pregnancy to the time the child enters kindergarten, providing information on child development and parenting strategies, as well as connecting them to resources in the community. Last year the family educators made 3,000 home visits and gave 14,000 age-appropriate books to children.

Imprints Cares is not the only local agency that is tackling school readiness.

Smart Start Forsyth County administers the NC Pre-K Program in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

Family Services promotes school readiness through Head Start and Early Head Start, which offer low-income families access to early learning and child development programs.

Nurses in the Nurse Family Partnership visit low income families regularly for the first two years of the childs life.

Together programs like these have begun to make a dent in the problem.

Research at the University of Virginia compared children who entered kindergarten in 1998 with children who entered in 2010 and found that students in 2010 entered kindergarten substantially more proficient at both math and literacy skills. Increases in academic skills over this period were particularly pronounced among black children.

Still, it is estimated that 48% of children in Forsyth County are not ready to go to school at age 5.

The potential loss to society in terms of the unrealized contributions of a substantial percentage of our children is staggering. The potential loss to the children is heartbreaking.

The strength of programs like Parents as Teachers their intensive focus on parents and caregivers is also their limitation. Providing similarly intensive services on a large scale would be expensive.

You know whats expensive? Claudia Barrett counters. Young people who drop out and dont graduate from high school.

Point taken. Like so many social problems, it depends on what we want to spend money on.

Chamber honors people of the year at 76th celebration – Jacksonville Daily News

Posted: February 22, 2020 at 12:46 pm

Despite the approaching winter weather, the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce gathered Thursday night to honor its members during the 76th annual Membership Celebration.

Held at the Marston Pavilion on Camp Lejeune, awards were presented for the Golden Eagle Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, the Civic Honoree, Ambassador and Hospitality Person of the Year.

Laurette Leagon, Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber president, said the region faced a number of challenges over the last year, but emerged stronger as a result.

If the effects of the hurricane weren't enough, lets throw in a cyber attack to your chambers cloud service provider, which left us crippled for several months. But through it all, we as a community survived and we did so through partnerships, collaboration and determination. We celebrated recovery and resiliency with many ribbon cuttings and grand re-openings throughout the last year. Now I believe its a time for us to thrive, to grow, and to prosper, said Leagon.

Tiffany Choice, 2019 Chamber Board chair and senior director of operations for the Jacksonville Mall Chick-fil-A, said the community rebounded from setbacks such as the heavy damage sustained to the Jacksonville Country Club and its golf course and the loss of half of the Jacksonville Mall.

There was one obstacle after another and one point when we did not know if we would be able to reopen, Choice said about Chick-fil-A. It took over a year to gratefully get back to serving our guests. Although there were significant challenges, we preserved just like the other residents of this great community.

The Hospitality Person of the Year was presented to Jessica Eckart, of Hampton Inn & Suites. Onslow County Tourism Manager Salem Clarke said that Eckart had shown great professionalism and dedication over her years in the hospitality industry.

The attention to detail, work ethic, efficiency, and ambition has earned the praise of past and present employers and co-workers alike. In this past year alone, Eckart has received three awards for skills and positive attitude. With great communication, a calm demeanor, and a talent to quickly resolve issues, this professional has managed various stressful situations which is especially beneficial in the hotel industry, said Clarke.

The Chambers Ambassador of the Year award went to Michelle Ennis, of Onslow Weight Loss and Wellness. Terri Bock, owner of Business Solutions & Mobile Marketing, described Ennis as a Jacksonville native and successful entrepreneur who is quick to lend a helping hand to the chamber, fellow business owners and residents of Onslow County.

She has dedicated her professional life to the health and wellness of Onslow County neighbors for more 25 years. This certified wellness instructor is certainly worthy of the title of Ambassador of the Year for 2019, said Brock.

Presenting the Civic Honoree Award, David Heatherly, president of Coastal Carolina Community College, said winners Mat Raymond Jr. and Mat Raymond III of Sanders Ford are regular supporters of Relay for Life, Onslow Womens Center, Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation, and Onslow County Partnership for Children. He said they continue to be actively involved with the Chamber, especially the Military Affairs Committee in support of the Service Members of the Month.

They have a long track record of community service as stated on their business website, We have worked tirelessly to make a difference and give back to those who have supported us, said Heatherly.

The Marine Chevrolet Cadillac Woman of the Year was presented to Adrienne James, of M&S Sanitation. Former Chamber chair Cindy Edwards said the award recognizes women who achieve the highest level of professional accomplishments and have devoted their time and energy to the betterment of their community. She described James as a United Way of Onslow County Board member who has served on the Emergency Response Team for Onslow Womens Shelter and as a passionate advocate for children as a Guardian Ad-Litem volunteer.

This years honoree is a dedicated, community-driven woman who doesnt serve for praise or awards, she serves because its the right thing to do, said Edwards. She has helped the needy by organizing clothing drives, back-to-school events, feeding the homeless and helping single parents provide a memorable Christmas for their children.

Jeff Clark, CEO of Marine Federal Credit Union and a past Chamber board chair, presented the nights final award, the Golden Eagle Man of the Year, to Ed Garris of First National Bank. Clark said that since 1986, the award has been presented to men who have demonstrated excellence in their profession and have devoted tremendous time and energy to better our community.

Clark said Garris is the recipient of the Governors North Carolina Award for Volunteer Service and has volunteered his time and expertise to 18 different organizations, serving as treasurer five times and as a chairman four times.

I have served with him on several boards, including the Chamber Board, Executive Committee and Military Affairs Steering Committee and the Jacksonville Onslow Economic Development Board, which he chaired. This man was not only faithful to these boards and committees, but he brought insight and sometimes just good old fashioned common sense to the table when it was most needed said Clark.
