Could your morning coffee be a weight-loss tool? – Health24

If losing weight sits high atop your New Year's resolution list, you might want to reach for a piping-hot cup of joe.
Why? New research suggests that just 4 cups of coffee a day can actually help shed some body fat.
The finding follows a 24-week investigation that tracked coffee's impact among 126 overweight men and women in Singapore.
Investigators initially set out to see if coffee could help lower the risk for type 2 diabetes risk by lowering the risk for developing insulin resistance, which can lead to dramatic spikes in blood sugar and, ultimately, diabetes.
In the end, the researchers did not find evidence that coffee had such a protective effect. But there was an unexpected upside: Those who drank 4 cups of caffeinated coffee per day over six months saw a nearly 4% drop in overall body fat.
"We were indeed surprised by the observed weight loss that was specifically due to fat mass loss among coffee drinkers," said study author Derrick Johnston Alperet, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Alperet said it suggests that "this loss in fat mass was not likely to be due to changes in lifestyle, namely diet and physical activity".
Rather, he and his colleagues think that coffee-fueled fat loss may be the result of a "metabolic reaction", in which caffeine causes the drinker's metabolic process to ramp up. The end result, said Alperet, is the burning of more calories and a notable drop in body fat.
Still, the Singapore experiment lasted only six months, during which time half of the study participants - who were all Chinese, Malay or Asian-Indian - were randomly instructed to drink 4 cups of caffeinated instant coffee on a daily basis. The other half drank a beverage that mimicked coffee's taste but was neither coffee nor caffeinated. So, might drinking 4 cups of caffeinated coffee a day over a longer haul pose any risk?
Alperet thinks not. Prior research, he said, indicates that this level of consumption is well within current norms. Studies, he noted, suggest that on average Americans currently consume up to 4 cups daily, while Europeans can average as much as 7 cups.
Connie Diekman, a food and nutrition consultant and former president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is not so sure.
"The 4 cups allocated in this study appear to be on the high side of intake, so not what I would recommend," she cautioned. "The higher caffeine content might have helped suppress appetite."
But too much caffeine "can impact the body overall, causing headaches, jitters, rapid heartbeat and stomach distress", noted Diekman, who wasn't involved with the study.
And Alperet agreed that "any decision for a non-coffee drinker to include 4 cups of coffee per day to his/her diet needs to be carefully calibrated with other caffeine-containing foods, beverages and medication currently consumed".
In the meantime, "we believe more research is needed here," Alperet said. "Additional trials with more comprehensive assessments of body composition are needed to confirm our findings."
That point was seconded by Lona Sandon, who also reviewed the study. She is program director and assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Nutrition with the School of Health Professions at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
"Coffee, caffeine more specifically, has been on the radar for years for its potential to affect appetite, body weight and body fat," Sandon said. "But the exact mechanism of how it may work to decrease body fat is highly debated."
And even if coffee can be proven to trigger fat loss, Sandon said readers should manage their expectations, given that it took half a year for drinkers to shed a just a small percentage of body fat.
"Modest calorie restriction is more effective than that, along with a good exercise programme for changing body composition," Sandon pointed out. "Excess body fat is not going to melt away quickly with a few added cups of coffee per day."
The findings were published recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

One woman struggled with her body image from a young age and after piling on the pounds after her first child was born and struggling to drop any weight she found herself growing to a size 26 clothes before she overhauled her lifestyle and managed to drop six stone eight pounds by using a simple diet plan. Helen Dawe, 47, became a stranger in her own body as she looked down to her size 26 frame, she decided to embark on a weight loss journey after her growing weight became a huge problem for her, she discovered a brilliant weight loss diet plan which allowed her to reclaim her own body and slim down to a much healthier 16st 4lb.
At the beginning of her journey, Helen weighed 22st 12lb, a heavy diet of carbs, biscuits, crisps, cakes, and puddings contributing to her weight gain.

Dehydration is to summer as hypothermia is to winter -- but wait, maybe not. Dehydration is certainly a threat in the hot summer months, but it's just as much of a danger when temperatures drop. You can get dehydrated in the winter as easily as you can in the summer, if not more so, and the threat multiplies if you regularly exercise outdoors in the cold.
This is the case largely because, in cold weather, you may not notice how much water you lose. And if you don't feel thirsty, which is often the case in the winter, you may not replenish said lost water. Over the course of a few days or weeks, this can lead to serious dehydration.

Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluids than you consume, and your body is left struggling to perform its usual -- and critical -- functions. Dehydration often presents first as minor headaches and fatigue, symptoms you might equate to something else initially, like a lack of sleep.
As dehydration progresses, you might notice that you feel dizzy if you stand up too quickly; experience random muscle spasms and cramps; get a bad headache or migraine; and lose your ability to focus and concentrate.
Severe dehydration can lead to dry skin and lips, sunken eyes, fainting spells, rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing.
Through all of these stages, a common indicator that you're dehydrated is infrequent urination or urine that is dark in color. Kelly Barnes, a senior scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, tells CNET that monitoring your urine is the easiest way to keep an eye on your hydration status during rest (not while exercising).
"If you are not going to the bathroom often, not producing enough when you go or if your urine is dark in color, then you probably need to consume more fluids on a more regular basis," Barnes says. But on the flip side, "If your urine is near constant and clear, then you may need to scale back drinking or drink smaller amounts more regularly."
Rehydrate with an electrolyte-fortified drink to maximize replenishment of the nutrients lost through sweat.
Dehydration is more of a threat in the winter because most people don't notice the fluids leaving their bodies. That, combined with decreased thirst, can bring on dehydration more quickly than you'd think.
When it's cold outside, people tend to feel less thirsty, Barnes says. There are physiological shifts that make this happen, but often, diminished thirst occurs simply because it's cold, so of course you don't crave cold (or even room-temperature) water.
Every time you "see your breath" when it's cold outside, that's water leaving your body and evaporating. The drier the air, the more water you lose this way, Barnes says. Respiratory water loss also increases as the intensity of your exercise increases: The heavier you breathe, the more vapor you produce with each breath. The faster you breathe, the more vapor you produce per minute.
In sweltering summer weather, sweat is obvious -- the air is hotter and more humid, so sweat doesn't evaporate off of our skin quickly. In cold, dry weather, Barnes says that your sweat evaporates more rapidly, leaving less to accumulate or drip, if any. Since we usually equate "rehydrate" with "sweat," this may cause you to think that you don't need to replace as much fluid as you normally do, especially during exercise, Barnes says.
The drier the air, the faster your sweat evaporates, making it less noticeable.
"The best precaution against dehydration in the cold is to be prepared," Barnes says. "Make sure that you are properly hydrated throughout the day and prepare to replace fluid loss during your workout."
Your workout outfit is important, too, Barnes says: "Make sure that you wear the proper gear for your workout and for the weather to help you retain your body heat while allowing sweat to evaporate."
If you're struggling with dehydration because you just don't feel thirsty, Barnes recommends hydrating based on body mass change during exercise. Weigh yourself before you exercise and then replace enough fluid to keep yourself within 2% of your pre-exercise body weight.
You should, however, still make a point to stay hydrated throughout the day and prior to your workouts. Choosing flavored beverages, such as sports drinks with electrolytes, is a good way to consume more fluid when you don't want plain water. If you want to sip on something warm, try caffeine-free herbal teas or decaf coffee. Caffeinated beverages are fine, too, but can act as a diuretic in some people, so it's usually best to drink them in moderation.
If you find that you are still unable to get enough fluids, try eating more foods with high water content. All fruits and most vegetables have high concentrations of water, and this can count toward your total daily water intake.
If all else fails, make it fun: Get a water bottle you love and enlist a buddy or colleague to have daily water-drinking contests. Friendly banter can make even the most boring of things -- even drinking water -- more enjoyable.

Surrounding him in the visiting team locker room of Arrowhead Stadium, his teammates perched their large frames on small stools. A few players were crying. Some scrolled through their phones, their eyes red. Others just looked down.
Tennessees future includes many football-less months following their unexpected and thrilling playoff run, which ended Sunday with a 3524 loss to the Chiefs in the AFC championship game. While the victors hoisted the Lamar Hunt Trophy through falling confetti and fans shot off fireworks in the surrounding parking lots, Tannehill moved slowly. He took off one of his cleats, looked at it for a few seconds and threw it into a gym bag. Players navigated around him on their way to and from the showers, but he stayed put. A few minutes later, he took off the other shoe. A few minutes after that, Tannehillhis eyes still unfocusedfinally started removing his socks.
On the other side of the room, safety Kenny Vacarro was a little more upbeat. His eyes were puffy, but he struck a positive tone once he finished answering some of the many unread texts that popped up his phone after the loss.
[This playoff run] has been magical, he says. But I dont think its a Cinderella story, I think this is momentum. I think this is like, alright, the Titans are for real. Guys are sad, and Im sad too, but this is momentum for me. I think we earned a lot of peoples respect.

Earning that respect took a long time, and the Titans werent widely considered to be a teamreallyworthpaying attention to until the playoffs. Tennessees first game of the season was against the hyped (overhyped?) Browns on a warm September day in Cleveland (a far cry from Sundays frigid afternoon in Missouri, where frozen blades of grass crunched under players cleats as they ran across the rock-hard field). The Brownshad been a topic of discussion all offseason, thanks to brash quarterback Baker Mayfield and new coach (now ex-coach) Freddie Kitchens. They were the darling of the NFL, a young team with promise, and Browns fans were psyched. I was at the game to write about what hope looks like in a city that hasnt had much, when it comes to football, in decades.
But the Titans crushed the Browns, 43-13. And the main story coming out of that Titans win? It was a Browns loss. The national conversation after the season opener wasnt, Hey, how about those Titans? It was, Uh oh, were the Browns overrated?
They were. The Titans were the story the whole time, even though it took a while for the team to give anyone reason to believe it. The team started the season 2-4 and benched Marcus Mariota, their Heisman-winning starting quarterback, in mid October for Tannehill. Tannehill ended up leading the NFL with a 117.5 passer rating in the seasons final 12 games, and Tennessee clawed its way into the playoff picture. They took down two powerhouse teams in the playoffsthe Patriots and the Ravenson the road. Each time, many fans and media members counted them out. After the Ravens loss, editors at national publications scrambled to reassign stories and redirect reporters, who they assumed would be in Baltimore, to Nashville.
The Titans noticed. Last week, in the visiting locker room of M&T Bank Stadium, Vacarro joked with me after I mistakenly asked him, How do you feel about Kansas City? (I realizedquickly and to my horrorthat the Texans and Chiefs hadnt even played yet to determine who would appear in the AFC championship.) I quickly corrected myself and apologized to Vacarro, saying, I meant whoever wins the game, maybe the Texans. Sorry, I really didnt mean to say that.
Wait, he laughed, Why did you say Kansas City? You dont believe in Houston, just like nobody believed in us? See, this is crazy!
Not only was I embarrassedI actually did think the Texans had a good shot against the Chiefs!but Id also subconsciously let the more popular narrativea Chiefs winseep into my brain. As a reporter, I should probably pretend that interaction never happened. But it illustrates how easy it is to believe the fates that I, as a member of the media, and some of you, as fans, prescribe to teams before waiting to see what actually takes place.
On Sunday night, Vacarro brought up this previous interaction when I asked what it felt like to be written off for most of the season. We never believed [the doubters], he says. We cancelled out all the noise, and it was a hell of a season. I mean, hats off to the Chiefs, theyre a really good team. You predicted them to win last week before they even played.
Sometimes the narratives do play out the way most people think they will. But even after a loss like Sundays, the Titans dont doubt themselves. A couple more pieces, a couple more reps in the weight room, and the boys will be ready to go, offensive tackle Taylor Lewan said.

The team put up a fight until the very end, quietly grinding away and narrowing the Chiefs lead to a one-touchdown game in the fourth quarter. When everyone wrote them off, they knew what they had; head coach Mike Vrabel knew what they had.
When people have opinions and comments and games dont go the way we want them, [the players] dont pout, Vrabel said at his post-game press conference. They stay the course. They are mentally and physically tough. That is part of the reason I am proud of them.
Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey reiterated Vrabels point as he zipped up his suitcase in the locker room. In past years, nobody really had confidence in us. We didnt have confidence in ourselves. But we just brought a new foundation of confidence to this organization.
While free agency and the draft will change the makeup of the close-knit team, the Titans hope to build on the confidence gained through this AFC title game appearance and continue writing this story. They provided a shot of adrenaline, a hit of freshness that the NFL doesnt get often. Even the story of the Eagles underdog run to win Super Bowl LII included the Patriots. But Tennessee shook things up by eliminating New England, ending the oldest trope in the league: the Patriots going to the Super Bowl.
And they did it their way, with physical, old school football. They didnt play scared; Vrabel radiates a deep confidence that his team embodied. Or maybe he absorbed some of it from his players. Following Tennessees win in Baltimore, many people in the media talked about how the Titans have been made in Vrabels image. But I think its fair to say that he reflects this team as much as it does him.
We try to hold each other accountable and build trust to hold each other accountable, Vrabel told me in Baltimore. I love coaching them. Theres not another team I would rather go on the road and win games with than this one.
The Titans couldnt pull off another underdog road win this weekend. But they proved that they belonged to be here, and to be taken seriously in the national conversation as a team that has zero intention of losing that plot.
