A new year a new decade for that matter has many of us making resolutions, setting goals, daydreaming about a new season of life. Goal-setting is a great thing. It can help keep you on track when the going gets tough.
Many people set health goals for the new year. Again, a great idea. Who couldnt use more veggies in their diet or more minutes spent moving? The problem lies not with the intent of get-healthy resolutions. The problem lies in the myriad shady diet products being offered by equally shady companies companies that make claims about overnight weight loss or years off your age with one miracle product.
Most of these products, as the Better Business Bureau uncovered in a recent investigative study, are marketed online as risk-free with a very low introductory price. Customers who dont read the fine print on the miracle product should beware. The risk-free trials are anything but. Youve unwittingly entered your credit card information, which will be charged exorbitant recurring subscription prices after the introductory offer.
Compounding the problem, many celebrity images are ripped off and used to endorse these diet and beauty products. In fact, several celebrities have sued for the misuse of their name and image. Some of these sham companies will even admit, in the fine print, that the celebrity endorsement theyre using to peddle their product is fake.
The Better Business Bureau receives complaints nearly every day from consumers who were duped by free-trial offers. These offers are rampant on the internet, where nefarious companies have invested heavily in targeted and social media ads. The dollar loss is staggering. In the past decade alone, the Federal Trade Commission pursued cases of loss totaling more than $1.3 billion. This multibillion-dollar industry spans the globe, too.
While an introductory offer can be a legitimate companys way of introducing customers to new products, those trustworthy companies will never try to deceive customers or hide important information in the fine print. If you can locate and read the fine print on the order page, or the terms and conditions buried by a link, youll discover that you may have only 14 days to receive, and return the product to avoid being charged $100 or more. Additionally, the same hidden information may state that by accepting the offer, youve also signed up for monthly shipments of the products. Those shipments will be charged to your credit card and become subscription traps. Many people find it difficult to contact the seller to stop recurring charges, halt shipments and get a refund.
Its especially important for customers to find a company they can trust when they are investing in something as important as health, diet and wellness products. The Council for Responsible Nutrition, the trade association for the major dietary supplement companies, renounces shady free-trial business practices.
Your Better Business Bureau Northwest and Pacific recommends the following tips to avoid free-trial scams:
Always read the fine print before giving out your credit card for an offer that seems too good to be true.

On Friday, Sydney-based personal trainer Jono Castano Acero posted a photo with the Australian actress, saying he was proud of Wilson for sticking to it.

At the beginning of the year, Wilson wrote in an Instagram post that 2020 would beThe Year of Health.
I put on the athleisure and went out for a walk, deliberately hydrating on the couch right now and trying to avoid the sugar and junk food which is going to be hard after the holidays Ive just had but Im going to do it! she wrote. Whos with me in making some positive changes this year?
Her weight loss didnt just start this year, though. In an interviewwith Entertainment Tonight, Wilson said she lost eight pounds in four days while filming Cats, because the set was kept so hot close to 100 degrees and the dance sequences were physical.
These people are like, the best dancers in the whole world, so they cant cool their muscles down or they could get an injury and theyd be out of the film So, theyd heat up the set like a sauna so we would never cool down, but made it pretty uncomfortable, Wilson said in the interview.
But Wilsons weight loss hasnt always been celebrated. While filming Pitch Perfect in 2012, one of the films that launched Wilson to mainstream success, her contract stipulated that the actresshad to stay the same size.
The actress has long been an advocate for plus-size women. In 2017, she launched herown fashion line, Rebel Wilson X Angels, designed specifically for sizes 14 to 24.

High-impact cardio think running, HIIT, CrossFit, plyometric circuits tends to get most of the attention when it comes to weight loss, but we're here to tell you that low-impact cardio sessions have their place in your routine too.
"Low-impact exercise is easier on the joints and you can do it more frequently, regardless of your age or fitness level," said Tom Holland, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor. It's true that high-impact cardio burns more calories and builds up your bone density, Tom said, "but that comes with a cost: a significant increase in stress on the body and chance of injury."
Low-impact cardio is a good choice if you're a beginner building up your strength and endurance, or if you're recovering from injury. But you have a few options when it comes to choosing a low-impact workout, so which one should you go for?
"The most effective form of low-impact cardiovascular exercise for fat loss is that which you do consistently," Tom told POPSUGAR. Which makes sense: high-impact cardio burns lots of calories in a short amount of time. To burn the same amount through low-impact exercise, you'll have to commit more time to the workouts. "Frequency becomes the most important factor," Tom explained, so the workout you can and want to do frequently will be the best one for fat loss.
You have some good options to choose from. Walking is the most popular form of low-impact cardio, Tom said, and it's been shown to be effective for fat loss. Swimming is another low-impact workout that can help you lose weight, especially with speed intervals try this beginner's swim workout for a place to start. Zumba and the elliptical are also effective low-impact cardio workouts. Start with this 20-minute Zumba video or this cardio elliptical circuit for a taste. Experimenting with different kinds of low-impact cardio will help you find what you love, and the variety will keep you invested and excited to work out.
We mentioned the importance of working out frequently when you're doing low-impact exercise. So, exactly how often should you walk, swim, or hit the elliptical if the goal is weight loss? "As often as possible," Tom said. He recommended splitting up low-impact sessions throughout your day to get more minutes in. "You can do a 20-minute walk with the dogs in the morning, a 15-minute walk at lunch, and a 15-minute walk after dinner to get in a full hour of exercise," he explained. With walking in particular, you can get in these "micro-workouts" without even going to the gym.
If your body is up to high-impact cardio right now, you can incorporate both forms of exercise into your weight-loss routine. Tom recommended the following weekly plan:
Since high-impact workouts put you at greater risk of injury, Tom said they're "generally not something you would want to do every day." If you're doing high-impact, mixing those workouts in with lower-impact routines will keep you healthy and engaged in all the different workouts, which will ultimately keep you on the path to weight loss.

How to Lose Weight Fast – Quick & Easy Weight Loss Tips

Lose 5 pounds in one week! It's a trope we see everywhere. And while its possible that someone can lose that much (if not more) in that time period, it really depends on your metabolism and loads of other factors, including physical activity and body composition, all of which are entirely unique to you.
Weight loss ultimately comes back to the concept of calories in, calories out: Eat less than you burn and youll lose weight. And while its possible to lose water weight quickly on a low-carb diet, I certainly wouldnt advocate for it. The diet itself can trick you into thinking that this eating style is working when really, you might gain back what you lost as soon as you eat carbs again. That can feel incredibly dispiriting if you want results that last longer than a week.
Based on my experience in nutrition counseling, most of us tend to snack on foods that arent nutrient-dense, but are high in calories. For example, skipping sugary beverages is often the easiest way to lose weight faster. You dont feel full from drinks even the ones that do contain calories so swapping those out for sparkling water or unsweetened tea and coffee is the best place to start. Other major culprits often come in refined grains like cereals, chips, crackers, and cookies.
If you're looking to speed up weight loss, I'd also encourage you to be mindful of the foods you eat that you don't choose for yourself. Think: food pushers at work or your kids leftovers. Noticing where your extra calories actually come from is another step to making better choices in the short and long term.
In my experience, there are a few other tips that hold true for almost all of us across the board and theyre concepts that we can put into practice beginning right now.
So, heres where to start:
Its that simple, I promise! If you think about making any meal mostly veggies (at least 50% of anything that youre having), youre on the right track to better health and weight loss.
All meals are important, but breakfast is what helps you start your day on the right track. The best, heartiest breakfasts are ones that will fill you up, keep you satisfied, and stave off cravings later in the day. Aim to eat anywhere between 400 and 500 calories for your morning meal, and make sure you're including a source of lean protein plus filling fat (e.g., eggs, unsweetened Greek yogurt, nuts, or nut butters) and fiber (veggies, fruit, or 100% whole grains). Starting your day with a blood sugar-stabilizing blend of nutrients will help you slim down without sacrifice.
Since salt is a preservative, packaged and processed foods are often highest in sodium something to keep in mind when planning your meals. When it comes by buying snacks, a "low sodium" product has to be 140 mg or less per serving so if you're REALLY in a bind, you can follow that guideline for what to put in your cart.
Start your day with a cup of joe. Caffeine is a natural diuretic and an excellent source of antioxidants, which protect your cells from damage. You can have up to 400 mg about a venti Starbucks coffee daily, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Not much of a coffee drinker? Tea is also a natural diuretic, and types of herbal tea such as dandelion or fennel root can also lend a hand. In fact: When a recent study compared the metabolic effect of green tea (in extract) with that of a placebo, researchers found that the green-tea drinkers burned about 70 additional calories in a 24-hour period.

We just don't feel full by liquid calories in quite the same way as we do real food. Drinking a juice or caramel coffee drink just isn't as satisfying as eating a bowl of veggie- and protein-packed stir-fry. So monitor your intake of juice, soda, sweetened coffee and tea, and alcoholic beverages. If you consume each of those beverages during the day, you'll have taken in at least 800 extra calories by nighttime and you'll still be hungry. (Incidentally, alcohol may suppress the metabolism of fat, making it tougher for you to burn those calories.)

It's a one-time investment you'll never regret. Here's why: Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories at work or at rest 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The more lean muscle you have, the faster you'll slim down. How do you start strength training? Try some push-ups or a few squats or lunges. Use your free weights to perform simple bicep curls or tricep pulls right in your home or office. Do these exercises three to four times per week, and you'll soon see a rapid improvement.
It can actually help you cut back on calories. There's tons of research that demonstrates getting less than the desired amount about 7 hours of sleep per night can slow down your metabolism. Plus, when you're awake for longer, you're naturally more likely to snack on midnight munchies. So don't skimp on your ZZZ's, and you'll be rewarded with an extra edge when it comes to losing weight.
Loads of research demonstrates people who log everything they eat especially those who log while they're eating are more likely to lose weight and keep it off for the long haul. The habit also takes less than 15 minutes per day on average when you do it regularly, according to a 2019 study published in Obesity.
Start tracking on an app like MyFitnessPal or use a regular notebook. It'll help you stay accountable for what you've eaten. Plus, you can easily identify some other areas of your daily eats that could use a little improvement when it's written out in front of you.
Don't get me wrong exercising at any time is good for you. But evening activity may be particularly beneficial because many people's metabolism slows down toward the end of the day. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and may keep it elevated for another two or three hours, even after you've stopped moving. Plus, it'll help you relax post-meal so you won't be tempted by stress-induced grazing that can rack up calories.

Skipping meals will not make you lose weight faster. If a hectic day makes a sit-down meal impossible, stash a piece of fruit and pack of nut butter in your car or purse and keep snacks in your office desk drawer anything that will keep you from going hungry!
Going long periods of time without food does double-duty harm on our healthy eating efforts by both slowing down your metabolism, and priming you for another binge later in the day. (Think: You've skipped breakfast and lunch, so you're ready to takedown a whole turkey by dinner!) Make it your mission to eat three meals and two snacks every day, and don't wait longer than three to four hours without eating. Set a "snack alarm" on your phone if needed.
Sure, you certainly need to drink plenty of water to help combat bloating, you can (and should!) also consume high-water content foods. Reach for cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, asparagus, grapes, celery, artichokes, pineapple, and cranberries all of which contain diuretic properties that will also help you stay full due to their higher fiber content.

Potassium, magnesium, and calcium can help to serve as a counter-balance for sodium. Foods that are rich in potassium include leafy greens, most "orange" foods (oranges, sweet potatoes, carrots, melon), bananas, tomatoes, and cruciferous veggies especially cauliflower. Low-fat dairy, plus nuts, and seeds can also help give you a bloat-busting boost. They've also been linked to a whole host of additional health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, controlling blood sugar, and reducing risk of chronic disease overall.
Dressing on the Side (and Other Diet Myths Debunked)
At any given time, there are dozens of weight-loss hypes in the marketplace that claim to take off 10 pounds in 10 days, or whatever. Desperation can tempt us to try anything from "clean eating" to cutting out food groups entirely. Keep in mind: Just because an avocado-kale-salad dripping in coconut oil is deemed "clean" by a so-called "expert" on your Instagram feed does not make it an unlimited food. Moral of the story? Avoid fads, eat real food, watch some Netflix, and unwind (perhaps with a glass of wine in hand). Now that's my kind of detox.
You already know that a perfect diet doesn't exist, but many of us still can't resist the urge to kick ourselves when we indulge, eat too much, or get thrown off course from restrictive diets. The problem: This only makes it more difficult, stressful, and downright impossible to lose weight. So rather than beating yourself up for eating foods you think you shouldn't, let it go. Treating yourself to about 200 calories worth of deliciousness each day something that feels indulgent to you can help you stay on track for the long haul, so allow yourself to eat, breathe, and indulge. Food should be joyful, not agonizing!

After being prescribed appetite suppressants to lose weight, then regaining everything I lost, I started flexible dieting, tracking macros, and weight lifting. I've lost 40 pounds.
For as long as I can remember, my weight has fluctuated based on what was going on in my life. When college came, I dealt with sleepless nights and weekend partying and I gained the infamous Freshman 15, followed by the Freshman 30.
I struggled with figuring out my path in life. I went through a period of depression, and food was my outlet. Reflecting back on that period of my life now, I realize how poorly I treated my body. I would eat McDonald's every day, almost three times a day. It seems insane to admit that now, but with the stress of school and relying on school tuition for food, I didn't have much choice back then.
At one appointment, he talked to me about using appetite suppressants. I was so uncomfortable with my body that I would've done anything to lose weight. After starting phentermine (which is used as a weight-loss drug due to the way it suppresses appetite), I started losing weight so quickly that I was almost 20 pounds down in a month.
But as you can probably guess, using diet pills was *not* sustainable. And one day, I decided to stop the pills and try to maintain my weight loss naturally. As soon as I got off of them? My appetite came back with vengeance. I put all the weight back on, and then some. I weighed more than before I started the pills.
It wasn't until years later that I found out that this appetite suppressant was usually prescribed to those were who were morbidly obese and looking to lose weight before weight-loss surgery. I still don't understand why my doctor suggested the medication to me because I felt I wasn't in dire need of it at the time. I was disappointed in myself for ever starting the prescription medication, but also glad I could now educate women on how a quick fix will never work long-term.
I tried to lose weight on my own after getting off the phentermine by upping my physical activity. But with the increased activity, I started to increase my eating because I felt like I deserved the reward of it. I added in cheat meals, which backfired in the end. Although I was doing more cardio, I was still gaining more weight. I was at my heaviest, feeling defeated. I knew I needed to change something.
I used to be an all-or-nothing type of girl with eating. But the idea of flexible dieting is exactly what it sounds like and includes the 80-20 rule, or eating nutritious good-for-you foods 80 percent of the time, and the "If It Fits Your Macros" (IIFYM) rule, which means you eat calories within your macronutrient (carbs, fat, protein) percentages. This way of eating is really a lifestyle change and less of a diet, and it really changed my thought process around eating.
Through my journey and education (I got my masters in nutrition!), I learned that in order to lose weight, you have to be in a caloric deficit. I learned that with increased activity, I personally ended up eating in a caloric surplus rather than a deficit (hence the weight gain). The flexible dieting lifestyle helped me recognize that a calorie is a calorie, and while eating nutritious foods is important, there's no reason to freak out over eating a "bad" food.
I stuck to the 80-20 and IIFYM rules consistently, though I still had days when I overate. But I never punished myself for thatI'm human. I tell people that I can have my cake and eat it too with the 80-20 rule. Eighty percent of the time I eat whole foods, veggies, fruit, etc., and 20 percent of the time I have treats like cake or fries.
This works for me because I never deprive myself. Depriving myself in the past always backfired. I'd eat salads all week and then binge eat chips on the weekend. But on this diet, I can have chips in moderation, and that little fix during the week is all I need.
I use the MyFitnessPal app to track my food and macros and that really helps me stay on track, even while eating treats.
But I realized that I was really limiting myself. When I started my weight loss journey, my brother had recently joined the Air Force and was in basic training, which meant lots of exercise in the gym to stay fit. He got me into the gym and helped me overcome my gym-timidation.
When he got deployed, I learned how to weight train using bodybuilding.com's exercise library. From there, I watched a lot of YouTube videos to perfect my form while lifting. I loved it so much.
In 2018, I received my certification in personal training. Now, I lift weights five days a week. I have one cardio/active rest day, and one complete rest day.
The stronger I got, the more confidence I built inside and outside of the gym. I do what people call "powerbuilding," which is a combination of powerlifting and bodybuilding. It is empowering as a woman to lift really heavy weights. I perform progressive overload in my training, which means I progressively add weight as I continue to get stronger. Lifting weights is my therapy.
It's been a rollercoaster of a journey. Some days I would take a few steps backward and find myself binge eating. But my habits were built by just trying to improve each day, whether it was by adding more weight to my barbell or eating an extra piece of fruit that day. Ive learned that quick fixes backfire, and the all-or-nothing mindset is what kept me stuck in the yo-yo dieting cycle.
Following the 80-20 lifestyle has really helped me heal my relationship with food. Any guilt I have around treating myself is short-lived, and I don't have food anxiety anymore. Focusing on macros and lifting weights helped me, too; not only am I physically stronger, my mind is stronger, too.

However, top dietitian Susie Burrell has now revealed that blitzing body fat doesn't need to be as taxing as that.

Instead, Susie, from Sydney, Australia, says that there are five simple lifestyle changes you can make to maximise your weight loss in 2020 - without you having to work too hard at all.

Limiting the amount of time you're eating throughout the day will help you shed those pesky pounds.
Susie says: "A growing body of research shows that when we limit our eating to just eight to ten hours each day, or not eating for 14 to 16 hours of each day is a strategy that appears to support weight control minus any specific calorie counting or dietary rules.
"Committing to longer periods of time minus any calories appears to help reset some of the hormones that regulate fat metabolism in the body.

"In real life terms this translates into having an early dinner, or having your first meal later in the day as to support a longer overnight fast.
"Here the only thing you need to pay attention to is what time you are eating each day, as limiting the number of total hours we eat naturally controls calorie intake."
Eating whole foods will help you slash your daily calorie intake and blitz body fat, according to Susie.
She says: "It has been shown that consuming whole foods such as a steak as opposed to mincemeat; or wholegrain bread rather than white results in a higher calorie burn than the more processed food alternatives.
"This means that the more natural the state of the food you eat, the better it is for metabolism.
"This means enjoying vegetables and fruit whole, with the skin intact; fillets of fish, meat and chicken and whole food snacks such as nuts, fruit and yoghurt rather than processed biscuits, bars and cakes.
"Choosing whole foods also tends to reduce calorie intake overall and we reduce our intake of processed foods that tend to have added sugars and fats."
Adding more fruit and vegetables to your diet can provide you with speedyweight losswith results that are much more likely to last than fad diets.
Susie says: "Diets are often focused around what we should not be eating; need to cut back on and depending on the diet the food groups to avoid.
"Focusing on what we should not be doing can often work in reverse, resulting in an increased focus on the tempting, higher calorie foods we ideally need to cut back on to control calorie intake.
5 reasons to avoid fad diets, according to the NHS
The NHS has shared five reasons as to why following fad diets may not be a good way to lose weight.
"When we focus on boosting our overall vegetable intake, the focus is on eating more, not less and the more salad and vegetables we eat, the lower our overall calorie intake tends to be, supporting weight control.
"Think about adding vegetable sides or a juice to your breakfast, salads and soups for lunches and at least two to three cups of mixed salad and vegetables with your evening meal to significantly boost your vegetable intake."
Susie firmly believes that allowing yourself to have a little treat every now and again will help you stick to your diet.
"Diets often fail because we are lured by our favourite sweet treat, glass of wine or fail to factor in eating out as part of our regular dietary regime," Susie says.

"When we factor these foods into our regular meal plan, in controlled volumes, you are less likely to experience the feelings of deprivation that can be associated with stricter diets and more likely to be able to stick to your healthy eating plan the rest of the time.
"This translates into enjoying a meal out regularly, factoring in a portion controlled sweet treat after dinner, or giving yourself permission to enjoy a glass or two of wine a couple of nights each week depending on your preferred style of indulgence."
Preparing your own food rather than buying it will help you cut down on your calorie intake - and ultimately lose weight.
"Whenever we buy a meal away from home a caf lunch; food court sandwich or a home delivered meal it is likely you will be consuming at least one/three more calories and fat than the equivalent meal you would prepare for yourself at home," Susie says.
"When it comes to weight control this meals that more you are in control of your calorie intake, the lower your calorie intake is likely to be.
"This means packing more lunches, ordering less dinners at home and eating breakfast at home rather than indulging in a caf treat more than occasionally as a general strategy that supports weight control."
