We're a few weeks into 2020 and some people may still be finalizing their list of New Year's resolutions to fulfill.
Every January, people make resolutions such as to lose weight, read more books or quit smoking. The month brings a fresh start which makes it the perfect time to begin working toward a goal. The difficult part usually isnt deciding what to put on the list for this years goals, but to keep those goals throughout the year.
Making a resolution that is healthy for you and the environment may provide some added motivation. The 50th Anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated this year on April 22. Its not necessary to wait until April to start an action that benefits the Earth and its natural resources. Below are three resolutions that will not only improve your health but will also help the planet.
Drinking more water each day is an easy way to begin the journey toward a healthier you in 2020. About 60 percent of the human body is made up of water, according to mayoclinic.org. Water keeps us hydrated so were able to perform daily tasks including exercise. The zero-calorie beverage affects a persons physical and mental health. The necessary daily intake of water differs depending on the individual. Factors such as age, environment and activity impact how much water the body needs but eight glasses a day is a good goal to strive for according to the Mayo Clinic.
In order to help the environment along with your body, dont consume the liquid from a single-use plastic bottle. Bottled water is a staple in many households because its easy to transport and convenient. Unfortunately, its not a convenience when it comes to Earth. Too often, water bottles become litter which end up in waterways such as rivers, lakes and oceans. When water bottles do make it to the trash, its still not a good thing. According to the nonprofit organization The Water Project, single-use plastic bottles take more than 1,000 years to bio-degrade which means landfills are overflowing with them.
Save money and help protect the environment by using a reusable water bottle that you can fill up each day. If you are worried about the quality of water coming from your tap, then use filters which will still cost less money than buying single-use plastic bottles on a regular basis.
Exercise is a common New Years resolution. The recommendation for adults is to get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio activity or 75 minutes of vigorous cardio activity, according to the American Heart Association. People who engage in moderate-intensity exercises will have a faster heartbeat but will still be able to have a conversation. Examples include walking, dancing, gardening and biking slower than 10 miles per hour. People engaged in more vigorous activities will most likely sweat and get out of breath when attempting to talk. Examples include hiking uphill, running, jumping rope, or cycling at 10 miles per hour or faster.
Several of the activities recommended for heart health can also be beneficial to the environment. Using walking or cycling as a mode of transportation instead of cars helps lessen air pollution. If you live only a mile or two from a destination such as a store or park, then consider walking there instead of driving in a car. Walking or cycling to work is also a green alternative to driving every day. Regional trails and bike-friendly streets are making it possible to do such activities safely. It may not be feasible to walk or bike everywhere but even doing so occasionally can make a difference.
Plant-based diets can help reduce the risk of heart disease, according to the Harvard Health Publishing website health.harvard.edu. Many plant-based foods have heart benefits such as whole grains, vegetables, nuts and healthy oils. Plant-based diets tend to be high in fiber, minerals and vitamins. The nutrient-rich food options help lower blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol levels, maintain a healthy weight and more.
It just so happens that adding more plants to your plate also helps the environment. Eating more plant-based foods and less animal-based foods help to reduce carbon emissions. Reducing the amount of meat you consume can also help conserve water.
Pound-for-pound, gallon-for-gallon, animal-sourced foods use vastly more water and carbon to produce than plant-based food, stated an publication on the UCLA Sustainability website sustain.ucla.edu.
The publication also stated one pound of beef can require between 2,000 to 8,000 gallons of water to produce it and one gallon of cows milk can require 1,950 gallons of water.
Meatless Mondays is a popular trend that aims to encourage people to start adding more meat-alternative meals to their diet. If you are new to plant-based eating, start by making one or two meals that are completely meatless then expand from there. After you become familiar with making plant-based meals then try making one or two days of the week completely meatless.

Oil-covered swans rescued from Wigan lake – Wigan Today

Swans which were found smothered in oil have been saved from a polluted fishing lake in Wigan.
The RSPCA were called to rescue the five swans yesterday after a diesel spill on Wednesday at the ponds in Scot Lane, Martland Mill.
Officers using a water rescue boat were at the scene and were able to capture the affected swans.
They will now be transported to the RSPCAs Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire, where the time-consuming task of cleaning the swans will take place.
The Environment Agency said it is investigating the cause of the spillage while it said Wigan Council will clean up the pollution in due course.
RSPCA chiefs said that if oil is not removed from waterbirds it reduces the natural waterproofing in their plumage.
The charity said this then leaves them at risk of dying from hypothermia - so it is vital that they are treated quickly.
RSPCA Animal Welfare Officer (AWO) Jonathan Brooks said: We received a call on Wednesday that some swans appeared to be covered in oil from a spillage and I attended the scene.
It was dark but I could see five swans on the lake which were contaminated with oil.
Today (Thursday) we had a team of officers at the lake with a water rescue boat to capture the affected swans and we managed to get all five safely.
Mr Brooks said the swans will be cleaned carefully at the wildlife centre with washing up liquid and once they have recovered, they will be returned to the wild.
He said: The feathers damages the structure of them and also when they are preening they ingest the contaminants and this makes them ill.
When they are preening they are not eating so lose weight and become weak.
With the feathers not protecting them they can also become hypothermic - as they cant keep dry and warm so we will have fatalities if we dont intervene, which is why we have to act fast.
They will be taken to our wildlife centre where staff will clean the birds carefully with washing up liquid and once they have recovered they will be returned to the wild.
An Environment Agency spokesman said it will continue to monitor the site.
They said: We can confirm we have attended the ponds in Scot Lane, Martland Mill, due to reports of an oil spill.
Environment Agency teams were on site on Tuesday night to investigate the incident and returned to the site on Wednesday to take further water samples.
Measures have been put in place to minimise the risk of pollution to the River Douglas and its wildlife.
Wigan council have been made aware of the incident and they will clean up the pollution in due course.
We will continue to monitor the site and liaise with our partners at Wigan Council and the RSPCA.
They added: If you see something in your local watercourse that does not seem right you can report it to the incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
A Wigan Council spokesman said: We are working with the Environment Agency to investigate the cause of the oil spillage and will clean-up the pollution within the fishing lake as a matter of priority.
We have also liaised with the RSPCA over the welfare of the swans and would like to thank the organisation for their swift response.

IT seems that just about every week there's a new diet craze.
And like many fads, they will go out of fashion just as quickly as they came in.

Usually, a fad diet will promise rapid weight loss and other health benefits, without any scientific evidence to support them.
But one dietitian has admitted that there are a handful of diet trends that shouldn't be ignored.
In fact, Sydney-basedSusie Burrell says that when followed the right way they can even provide long-term results.
Here, she reveals the five fad diets she believes are the most effective...
Over the last couple of years, droves of celebrities have credited the keto diet for keeping them in shape.
But the high-fat, low-carb isn't actually anything new.
It was originally developed in the 1920s to help patients suffering from epilepsy.
Writing on her blog, Susie said:"A keto approach requires followers to reduce their carbohydrate intake to an extremely low level so that ketosis or fat burning is induced as the body breaks down fat stores directly to be utilised as fuel.
"A keto approach requires followers to replace carbohydrate intake with fat."

She explained that the diet requires followers to break up their food intake to 10 per cent carbs, 70-80 per cent fats and just 15-20 per cent protein.
"This is why you see a lot of avocado, butter, eggs and cream utilised in keto diets," she says.
"The reality is that most diets that claim to be keto are actually just low in carbohydrates as opposed to achieving these ratios of fat, protein and carbohydrate.
"In real life, achieving these ratios in your diet is somewhat challenging but if you can, and do follow it, it will work very effectively."
The paleo diet is often dubbed the "caveman diet" because it promotes a diet similar to that of our stone age ancestors.
Before modern agriculture developed around 10,000 years ago, people typically ate foods that they could hunt or gather, such as fish, lean meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
Susie writes: "The focus on fresh, unprocessed food naturally supports weight loss, as does the complete avoidance of processed carbohydrates.
"The only down side tends to be an especially low intake of dietary calcium and while fibre intake from vegetables and fruit may be adequate, a number of followers find the lack of insoluble fibre intake from grains and legumes can result in constipation."
A very low calorie diet (VLCD) is a clinically supervised diet plan that involves eating about 800 calories a day or fewer.
It usually involves replacing normal food with low-calorie shakes, soups, bars, or porridge containing milk.
It's not an easy diet to follow and it's not generally recommended without the supervision of a doctor - but it does work.
VLCDs work extremely effectively but the issue is that once they are ceased most if not all weight tends to be regained
Susie explains: "Very Low Calorie Diets that generally utilise meal replacement products and diet shakes to achieve an extremely low calorie intake of just 800 calories per day have again been used for many years in clinical settings to achieve weight loss.
"Now commonly utilised by weight loss surgeons prior to surgery, VLCDs are extremely effective in reducing fat stores in the liver whilst also inducing ketosis as overall calorie and carbohydrate intake is extremely restrictive.
"VLCDs work extremely effectively but the issue is that once they are ceased most if not all weight tends to be regained unless underlying eating habits are significantly altered long term."
The 5:2 diet is a type of fasting diet based on the idea of scoffing what you like five days of the weeks and severely restricting for the other two.
The part-time aspect appeals to many people because there is no restriction on what youeat for five days of the week.
On the fasting days, dieters are meant to eat 25 percent of their recommended calorie total - 500cals for women and 600cals for men.
Susie says they've been shown to be effective in supporting relatively slow weight loss at between 1kg and 2kg a month.
She added: "It appears that significantly restricting calorie intake for brief periods has a number of metabolic benefits in the body which in turn support fat metabolism.
"The biggest issue is that you will not lose weight as quickly as many desire."
The last diet approach Susie highlighted is the low card diet.
She explains that like the keto diet, carbs are restricted to about 10-20% of your overall intake.
But as it's not as high fat, it leaves you with more room for protein that keto does.
Susie adds: "Low carbohydrate diets, or diets that require followers to eliminate virtually all bread, rice, cereal, pasta, fruit and starchy vegetables are extremely effective in achieving fat metabolism, at least in the short term.
"The issue for most is that as soon as any of these high carb foods are reintroduced weight tends to be rapidly regained and becomes more and more difficult to lose in subsequent attempts."

Although cereal is a popular and easy breakfast option, it could be hurting your weight loss goals. Even supposedly healthy cereals can have surprising ingredients that hinder your ability to lose weight quickly. To make it easier to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy cereals, we spoke to Lisa Richards, nutritionist and author of The Candida Diet.
Richards explains the main problem with breakfast cereals: Cereal is a go-to breakfast food for many people, even those who follow a relatively healthy eating pattern. However, there are some ingredients in breakfast cereals, including those that claim to be good for you, that are unhealthy.

The biggest health concern with cereals are their refined carbohydrates. Richards explains, "Because of the way many cereals are made, the use of refined grains is very common."
Just because it is common, however, does not make it healthy. "This form of carbohydrate is highly inflammatory and turns to sugar quickly in the body. Always check the ingredients list and avoid cereals that state enriched flour, even if it says it is wheat. This ingredient could be slowing down your health and weight loss goals," Richards tells SheFinds.

Another ingredient to stay away from is sugar. Richards says, "This is a fairly obvious ingredient to limit in breakfast cereal. However, it can often be listed under different names to hide the amount the cereal contains."
With that in mind, although you may think your cereal is low in sugar, it could be disguised under a different name. Richards warns, "Some common alternative sugar names include: HFCS, fructose, sucrose, caramel, castor sugar, sorghum syrup, invert sugar, evaporated cane juice, and agave nectar."

According to Healthline, starting your morning with one of these cereals could hurt your long-term weight loss goals: "Starting the day with a high-sugar breakfast cereal will spike your blood sugar and insulin levels."
This could affect your cravings later in the day. "A few hours later, your blood sugar may crash, and your body will crave another high-carb meal or snack potentially creating a vicious cycle of overeating," Healthline explains.

According to Eat This, Not That!, there are a wide range of high-sugar cereals from the more obvious ones to the more surprising ones. As always, your best bet is to pay close attention to the nutrition label and stick to cereals that are low in sugar and refined carbs. Kyle Brown Latham, 35, was 330 pounds when he tripped over a baby gate in his Austin home, broke his knee and twisted his back. Bedridden, Brown-Latham's weight in 2014 skyrocketed 80 pounds to about 408, an estimation because his at-home scale doesn't register weight over 400 pounds.
His highest weight was also his lowest point in life.
Like many Americans, Brown-Latham has spent his entire life yo-yo dieting, trying every single fad diet and weight loss pill on the market. Just as quickly as he'd see any results, he'd see the weight shoot right back up due to going back to his previous way of life. In some cases, he'd get heavier.

The weight left Brown-Latham frustrated, sad and in daily excruciating pain.
"I kept being told by doctors over and over that my weight was causing my pain," Brown-Latham. "That I was dealing with lots of inflammation."
And then it clicked for him, he said.
"I could control what I was putting into my body, and how I move and exercise my body," the Austin man said.
He began to look into how certain foods, like sugar and gluten, cause inflammation inside the body and decided he wanted to avoid that as much as possible.
"Those first two weeks that I was off sugar, it sucked," he said, laughing. "But it is amazing how everything changes afterward. I began to crave actual foods like vegetables. That was a whole new thing for me."
Sticking to a ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting lifestyle was the key to Brown-Latham's success, he said.
People on keto eat low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets, which causes the body to go into ketosis, a metabolic state that pushes the body to burn fat instead of carbs.
The intermittent fasting, which is brief periods of little to no caloric intake, helped him speed up the weight loss. Studies have shown that intermittent fasting can improve health and reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases.
Brown-Lathan fasts for 18 hours each day and opens his "eating window" around 5 p.m. and while he mostly eats clean, he will allow himself to have fun sometimes.
"I make sure that when I do put something in my body, that it is high-nutritional value and that it is not going to throw me off course," he said.
Brown-Latham, a social media influencer who also struggles with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), said losing the weight was a battle, one that he's proud he was able to do. EDS is an inherited disorder that affects connective tissues in the skin, joints and blood vessel walls, according to the Ehlers-Danlos Society.
To date, Brown-Latham has lost more than 200 pounds since 2014. His advice for others? To take the challenge step by step.
"I didnt lose 200 pounds one time," he said. "I lost one pound two hundred times."

It took a mundane coincidence for Dustin Wrye to turn around his weight gains. In March 2019 the 36-year-old U.S. Navy contractor from Tell City, Indiana was working in Afghanistan. Members of the Ukrainian military would drop by and ask him to order things from Amazon, including fitness watches. Intrigued, he ordered a FitBitat the time, he was 59 and 220 pounds.
The device helped him understand just how unhealthy hed gotten. While deployed in Iraq for 15 months in 2006-2007, hed picked up some bad habits. Fighting with boredom, hed skip physical training to watch TV and suck down sugary energy drinks and junk food. Hed also developed depression and anxiety issues that left him unmotivated to change. Then those habits stuck with him; his weight fluctuated, but the overall trend was up.
Hed even been telling friends he wanted to get back into the gym, but the Fitbit clarified just how far off-track hed gotten. I quickly realized how unhealthy I was and decided that was no longer acceptable, he says.
Wrye started rigorously tracking everything in his diet, aiming for a 1000-calorie deficit every day. He started walking and counting his steps, following the progression guidelines in the Fitbit app. Within three months, (more 1.4 million steps and 1000 kilometers) hed lost around 45 pounds.
I was extremely happy with the weight loss, but started to notice that after 10 years of basically no exercise I had very little muscle mass under all that fat, he says. Worried he was becoming skinny-fat, he wanted to wanted to build muscle. I was embarrassed to go to the gym because I knew I was weak, he says. I could barely do 10 pushups.
Looking online for guidance, he found Jeremy Ethiers Built with Science program. He followed it exactly and saw immediate results. He started at 176 and about 18 percent body fat. Sixteen weeks later, he had dropped to 163 pounds and 8 percent body fat. All told, hed slimmed down from 220 pounds, first by paying attention to his diet and walking more, then by getting into the gym. His waist size dropped from 34 inches to 31.
Wrye kept his progress relatively quiet, but friends were shocked and impressed when he posted photos of his results. I have definitely had a boost in confidence since I lost the weight and much more since I started putting on more muscle mass. he says. My mood, temperament and overall mental health has vastly improved as well. The results and physical well-being have kept him motivated; next hes looking to bulk up and add some more muscle mass.
He credits his success to having the right program. Find a reputable trainer or online workout program, he says, and follow it rigorously. Dont chase a fad, and be consistent. Be vigilant on your nutrition and tracking everything you eat. Nutrition is everything for weight loss.

During the interview, he was asked if he had recently been on a diet. He replied, It was just something I did for the role. about 22 pounds).
He continued, Many people ask me about my weight loss and it makes me cringe. I cant talk about it anymore. Like other people, I lost weight in a healthy way by controlling what I ate and exercising. He continued, Tae Soo is a character very different from the characters I have played before. That is why I was ambitious to play him. He has a sensitive nature and desperately yearns for something. He concluded that he was not particularly invested in dieting currently. I maintain my weight, and its embarrassing that people say that I lost weight when I didnt even lose that much. If I take a character who has more weight, I will probably recover it very quickly. If necessary, I think I could also lose more.

The average British adult will try 126 fad diets over the course of their lifetime - and typically abandon them after just six days.
A study of 2,000 adults found each person will embark on at least two trendy diets a year in a bid to quickly shed weight.
The most common 'quick fix' methods are the Atkins Diet, the 5:2 and the Cabbage Soup Diet, while the Keto, South Beach and Juice diets are also popular.
Unsurprisingly, the typical fad diet is abandoned after an average of just six days.
But, when wanting to lose weight, 52 per cent of those polled admitted they were really confused about which diets were sustainable and which were not.
One fifth don't know where to go to get reliable and truthful information, and more than half are baffled about which foods can and can't be cut out.
Almost one third of adults even believe consumption of fruits such as berries, apples and bananas should be limited.
Nick Marston, chairman of Love Fresh Berries, which commissioned the study, said: "January tends to be the month when people embark on fad diets as a quick fix.
"However, we know that it isn't a sustainable or even healthy approach.
"Instead, nutritionists advise that we follow evidence-based nutritional advice and look for a well-balanced diet that does not cut out any food groups.
"Incorporating lots of fruit and vegetables is important, including berries as they have many important nutritional benefits."
The study also revealed that when deciding to 'emergency diet', almost half of those polled would turn to Google as their first port of call for information, while 10 per cent would find out what their favourite celebrity does to look good.
Social media and self-help books are referred to by 15 per cent of people, but only 27 per cent say they'd consider consulting a GP.
Key motivations for Brits to take up a crash diet include having a big event on the horizon (18 per cent), preparing for a holiday (21 per cent) and wanting to feel happier with appearance (24 per cent).
But some of the methods of dieting proved even more extreme than others, with 16 admitting they would consider drinking up to 12 glasses of lemon juice a day to lose weight quickly.
And one in twenty would even be happy to intentionally ingest a tapeworm to burn 'extra' calories.
Other drastic - and unhealthy - methods respondents would consider trying include eating ice every day, drinking olive oil between meals and tucking into jars of baby food.
The apparent confusion about what works and what doesn't means many Brits are opting to cut out essential food groups, believing this will encourage faster weight loss.
And with the majority of adults admitting they experience more than five food cravings a day when trying to crash diet, the research indicates the elimination of certain foods is not sustainable for any period of time.
Loving food topped the poll of reasons why dieters found these plans impossible to stick to while a quarter said food and drink were integral to their social life.
Among the chief diet breakers are chocolate, bread and pasta, but for one in 10 fruit juice and bananas prove hard to resist.
Some Brits have even had to abandon a diet after it clearly affected their health, with fatigue (21 per cent), weakness (29 per cent) and headaches (26 per cent) putting an end to quick weight loss plans.
The study, carried out via OnePoll, also revealed just under half are confused about whether fruit should be limited when dieting, due to fears the food is too high in sugar (45 per cent) and carbohydrates (13 per cent).
More than one in 10 are convinced fruits are too calorific, while another tenth believe they contain worrying levels of fat.
Dr Emma Derbyshire, a nutritionist speaking on behalf of Love Fresh Berries said: "It seems there are still ongoing confusions about how much and what form fruits should be eaten.
"Concerns about sugars and carbohydrates are largely unfounded.
"The benefits that fruits bring in terms of micro and phytonutrients far outweigh any potential sugar concerns.
"Sugars naturally occurring in fruits are intrinsic and not 'added' sugars, also known as free sugars.
"Fruits such as berries are naturally sweet so there is no need to add extra refined sugar to these.
"In terms of calories and fats in fruit, this is rather concerning.
"When put into a larger context fruits contain far fewer calories, sugars and fat than refined snacks such as crisps, biscuits and cakes.
"Such confusions are worrying and clearly further myth busting is needed to help correct these misconceptions."
