Taylor Swift is one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her stage shows are true feats of endurance, requiring the singer to run, sprint, dance, and shake it for hours on end all while staying perfectly in tune with her songs.

While many stars might rely on backup dancers to carry much of their onstage performance, Swift likes to work hard to stay in perfect shape for her pop star lifestyle.

Taylor Swift definitely puts in work at the gym in order to keep her lean, trim figure. Swift is fond of regular cardio sessions to help build endurance and regularly puts in work on the elliptical or treadmill. Swift is also a known fan of the Body by Simone workouts.

The workouts burn calories through a series of movements that target many different areas of the body. Participants in the classes (which Swift attends in New York City on a regular basis) are encouraged to dance and move to the beat, having fun as they tone up.

Swift isnt a gym rat, and it is clear that when it comes to getting her exercise in, she prefers to do fun workouts that incorporate elements of her performances.

While exercise is important, diet also plays a huge role in staying fit. Taylor Swift follows a basic, realistic eating plan that encourages her to eat like a normal person. She has revealed that during the week, she tries to generally eat as healthy as possible, opting for salads and light sandwiches over heavy entrees like pasta or burgers.

For breakfast, Swift likes to eat a hearty meal of buckwheat pancakes and a fried egg, in order to give herself the energy to fully attack the day no lemon water and puny fruit cup for the hardworking singer.

Still, on the weekends, Swift likes to indulge herself with comfort foods like pizza, wine, and cookies from her favorite bakery in New York. The singer loves to cook at home and is a talented home chef, preferring recipes from Ina Garten.

Swift is also a Starbucks aficionado and treats herself throughout the week with her signature drink the skinny vanilla latte, a sugar-free drink that still has a jolt of sweetness. She balances out her caffeine habit with lots of water and reportedly drinks around 10 bottles of water every day.

Although Taylor Swift seems to stay slim and trim at all times, there are certain occasions when Swift feels the need to really cut calories. When she is trying to lose weight, Swift turns to chia seeds. Chia seeds are tiny, gray seeds that dont look impressive at first glance. But when added to water, the seeds expand, making them feel more like a fulfilling snack.

The seeds have some other health benefits as well. Reportedly, they contain a substantial amount of protein, fiber, and B vitamins.

While they have been touted as a superfood, some experts have pointed out that studies dont really support chia seeds being used as a tool for weight loss. Plus, they are rather high in calories, so it can be easy to go well over the recommended serving size and inadvertently consume too many calories.

In Taylor Swifts case, since she is exercising regularly and lives a generally healthy lifestyle, she likely doesnt turn to chia seeds on a daily basis, but rather, as an occasional dietary aid.

Celebrities and high-profile people in the spotlight are consistently trying to maintain their image and adhere to a standard that they should be a reincarnation of Adonis, himself. Many times, this results in an unhealthy lifestyle and raises concerns amongst fans, and rightfully so.

However, it's not beyond the spectrum that these A-listers are also people, just like the rest of us. Sometimes, they want to lose weight for their own purposes of feeling good and being happy with themselves. This latter case seems to be the goal that the grammy award-winning singer, Adele, has chosen to pursue.

Throughout her career, her weight has always been a topic of discussion, but as she's steadily lost weight, especially following her recent divorce in September, fans have become increasingly alarmed. Even worse, people on social media that have complimented her transition have been shamed for promoting a 'fat-phobia' agenda.

Following her divorce in September, Adele has been relatively quiet and out of the spotlight, but this has not prevented her from attempting to lose weight and feel better about herself.

It's a natural goal that so many of us pursue every year, especially around the beginning of the year as a resolution to better ourselves. Yet, she's receiving backlash, along with supporters.

Adele has even been losing weight the healthy way. She's attributed her results to a very special diet, as well as, lots of pilates. The diet itself consists of 'sirtfoods', which are those that help rev up metabolism, combat inflammation, and help reduce the overall aging of the body.

Her commitment to getting healthier has really paid off. Just recently she was spotted at a Christmas party and people were quick to compliment her with comments like 'gorgeous' and 'unrecognizable'.

The comments on her weight loss journey have prompted quite the controversy, though. Some have quipped that there are potential harms that come with celebrating someone's weight loss, while others shared that discussing it altogether must be done so in a responsible manner.

Audra Williams, a journalist out of Toronto specifically addressed the dangers of celebrating weight loss and how it can further propagate any mental illnesses that may already be present.

"Celebrating Adele's weight loss is a garbage thing to do for a million reasons. Here are two: (1) It tells your fat friends you think their bodies are a problem to be solved. (2) The weight loss could be the result of physical or mental health struggles. Weird to cheer about!" she wrote.

Others were quick to back Williams' point, even adding further consequences of celebrating someone else's weight loss.

Another social media user cited that being thinner doesn't necessarily mean that they're healthier. "(1) Unless she tells us (which she's under no obligation to do), we have no idea why her body is the size that is at any given time. (2) Being thinner than you were previously doesn't automatically = being healthier than you were previously," they shared.

Yet another user on Twitter chimed in saying that they wouldn't want to lose weight because it would change how they look. "This is why I refuse to lose weight. She doesn't look like her anymore #Adele."

The outrage, or worry, if you will, has only been exacerbated by recent photos that have been put online showing Adele on vacation with Harry Styles and James Corden. It's obvious that she's slimmed down a good bit, but the important thing is she looks happy and that's ultimately what it comes down to.

While there has been fallout from her new look, people have rushed in to defend her, no matter what people think about her weight loss.

One fan defended Adele, telling her to just live her life and be happy. "Live your life the way you want my QueenF--k what they say Our love for u goes beyond your weight #Adele," they shared.

Another social media commented on the nonstop critique of her weight issues and how that in itself creates mental health problems. "Omg, you guys bitch about basically anything that #Adele does! She's too big, you guys complain about that and now she's too skinny and you bitch about that. Seriously guys, no wonder people have body issues. She truly can't win. ," they said.

In the end, all that matters is that she's happy and healthy. No other opinion matters. And from the look of things, Adele looks to be thoroughly enjoying her new look and vacation with Styles and Corden in the Caribbean.

HAWTHORNE: The missing piece of the weight loss puzzle? – Keremeos Review

In my last article I talked about the missing piece of the weight loss puzzle the skills of behaviour change. Now, maybe missing is the wrong word, lets just say in my experience as a coach and gym owner its often undervalued and overlooked.

With changes to our health, our fitness, or our waistline, there are really two questions: Can I do it? And Do I want to? It comes down to ability and motivation, so a person could hire a coach or do some research and improve their skills and abilities with regards to exercise and nutrition, but without understanding and appreciating that change management is also a skill, the odds of achieving the goal plummet.

So, lets start with the components of behaviour change and how we can apply it to the desire to transform our health and fitness. The technical term for behaviour change is self-regulation and Dr. Roy Baumeister, a Social Psychologist at the University of Florida, one of the foremost experts on behaviour change (and the researcher responsible for the concept of willpower as a muscle) lists the ingredients of self-regulation as:

In order to change we need a clearly defined standard, something to align with. Standards can be cultural, political, philosophical or even spiritual. Belching by the campfire is perfectly fine (even a little competitive with my family), but not so acceptable during a classroom lecture, or a sermon in church.

This is measurement. Tracking and measuring the thing were looking to change. With exercise, lets say youve decided to walk or run, it could be time, distance, or speed, (the distance over time) If you want to change something you need an initial measure and some feedback to make sure that actions you take are having the desired effect.

Better known as willpower, this is the strength we exhibit in resisting actual temptation and sticking to our plans for change. Its the power to pass-up something that we want, but that we understand might not be in our best interests. It may, or may not be like a muscle, but there are definitely strategies to boost it when we need it.

This is the need to take action. Its the internal (or external) driver for taking whatever actions we take. When it comes to food, hunger is our motivation to eat, its unfortunate that it isnt always the primary reason This is where we can really apply our strategies and techniques to stay on task.

The idea of ingredients in a recipe is a really good one!

As I mentioned in the last article, were all different in our reasons for wanting to change our nutrition, our exercise, or both.

Whatever the reason is, its uniquely yours, and like a recipe each of these components needs to be considered, in varying degrees, when you decide that its time for a change. Any change! Turning back to the cooking analogy, if you understand salt, spice, fat and heat you can cook pretty much anything.

It might be aesthetics, reducing bodyfat, or increasing muscle mass

It might be performance, running longer or faster,

Or maybe its function, reducing pain from injury or disease.

Whatever the reason is, its uniquely yours, and like a recipe each of these components needs to be considered, in varying degrees, when you decide that its time for a change. Any change! Turning back to the cooking analogy, if you understand salt, spice, fat and heat you can cook pretty much anything.

Lets look at weight loss, or more specifically improvements to body-composition and how the first ingredient of behaviour change, standards, can apply. Were going to look at setting a goal (which is part of the idea of a standard) and ensuring that we make that goal, salient (especially meaningful) by applying personal standards to it. Theres a lot more to setting goals that work, and Ill address that in the future, but for now, lets see how we can take a little self-awareness and work it into our plan for change.

I love cardiovascular exercise. Its good for your brain and your body, from both a health and an aesthetics perspective. Now, improving your body composition can be a challenge given the power of the relationship with the foods we eat, but if youre sedentary, improving your health can be as easy as regularly going for a long, brisk walk. Providing your physically capable, this is a great place to start, but some people just dont like it. (Yet)

One of my friends, and a long term client, really didnt like walking for exercise, but she loved dogs. She regularly volunteered at the local SPCA where she would walk the dogs waiting for adoption. We had talked about how to incorporate specific behaviours that would help with weight maintenance, longevity and mood, and getting outside and walking definitely met those criteria. Theres a greenway walking trail near our local SPCA and so she was able to get outdoors in nature, be of service to her four-legged friends, and get some extra cardio.

With a little analysis and strategy she was able to take that healthy vital behaviour of a brisk nature walk and transform it from a low-motivational chore into an activity that she really wanted to do. Now that weve got a bit of base to work from, each week Ill take one of those ingredients of self-regulation, explore it in a little more detail, and then give an example of how it can be applied to your plans for change.

The average person will try 126 fad diets over the course of their lifetime, a new poll has claimed.

A poll of 2,000 participants found that the average person will embark on at least two fad diets a year, which was then typically being abandoned after just six days.

Among the most common quick fix methods were revealed as the Atkins Diet, the 5:2 and the Cabbage Soup Diet, while others opted to eliminate key food groups by trying the Keto, South Beach or Juice diets.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

At least 52 per cent of admitted they were really confused about which diets were sustainable, while a fifth didnt know where to go to get reliable and truthful information.

January tends to be the month when people embark on fad diets as a quick fix, said Nick Marston, chairman of Love Fresh Berries, who commissioned the poll.

This golden oldie has been around since the 1930s and was a favourite among classic Hollywood stars, like Marilyn Monroe. It involves eating half a grapefruit before every meal and is based on the idea that grapefruits contain a fat-burning enzyme that boosts the metabolism.

Based on the French concept of breatharianism, the idea that air alone can keep our bodies active, the air diet involves sitting in front of food, placing a piece onto a fork, holding it up to your mouth But not eating it. Instead, you are to subsist on water and salt soup only. Madonna is apparently a fan of pretend eating.

She did look good in Dream Girls, didnt she? But the lengths Beyonc went to to achieve her svelte frame were a tad extreme. Instead of solid foods, she survived on liquids famously a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water for 14 days. Apparently, this helps to detoxify the body (a process it actually does every day, naturally and unaided by weird diets) and stimulates tissue growth. The dieter is also encouraged to drink laxative tea twice a day. Glamorously.

Liz Hurley once revealed that she regularly subsists on a six-cup-a-day diet of watercress soup when she wants to lose weight for a role. The low-calorie leafy green is also a diuretic, helping to combat water retention. Its also a completely mental thing to do.

This diet, apparently beloved by Christina Aguilera, at least has some nutritional merit. In order to get the correct balance of nutrients, eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables across the colour spectrum is a wise idea. But the Seven-Day Colour Diet says you should only eat one colour of food per day of the week. Monday = white food. Tuesday = red food. Wednesday = green food and so forth. Bonkers.

In order to get the correct balance of nutrients, eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables across the colour spectrum is a wise idea. But the Seven-Day Colour Diet says you should only eat one colour of food per day of the week. Monday = white food. Tuesday = red food. Wednesday = green food and so forth. Bonkers.

We know that it isnt a sustainable or even healthy approach. Instead, nutritionists advise that we follow evidence-based nutritional advice and look for a well-balanced diet that does not cut out any food groups.

When asked where they go to get their information, nearly half said that they turned to Google. Another 10 per cent also said they would research what their favourite celebrity did.

Social media and self-help books are referred to by 15 per cent of people, but only 27 per cent say they would consider consulting a GP.

Worryingly, a significant amount of people said they would try more extreme dieting methods. At least 16 per cent admitted they would consider drinking up to 12 glasses of lemon juice a day to lose weight quickly.

One in twenty would even be happy to intentionally ingest a tapeworm to burn calories.

Other drastic and unhealthy methods respondents would consider trying include eating ice every day, drinking olive oil between meals and consuming jars of baby food.

Even though research suggests that the elimination of certain foods is not sustainable for any period of time, many are opting to cut essential food groups, believing this will encourage faster weight loss.

Loving food topped the poll of reasons why dieters found these plans impossible to stick to while a quarter said food and drink were integral to their social life.

The poll also found that some had to abandon their diet after it clearly affected their health, with fatigue (21 per cent), weakness (29 per cent) and headaches (26 per cent) putting an end to quick weight loss plans.

Confusion about whether fruit should be eaten a limited amount, with 45 per cent believing sugar content in these items are too high.

Concerns about sugars and carbohydrates are largely unfounded, said Dr Emma Derbyshire, a nutritionist speaking on behalf of Love Fresh Berries. The benefits that fruits bring in terms of micro and phytonutrients far outweigh any potential sugar concerns.

She continued: Such confusions are worrying and clearly further myth busting is needed to help correct these misconceptions.

The device helped him understand just how unhealthy hed gotten. While deployed in Iraq for 15 months in 2006-2007, hed picked up some bad habits. Fighting with boredom, hed skip physical training to watch TV and suck down sugary energy drinks and junk food. Hed also developed depression and anxiety issues that left him unmotivated to change. Then those habits stuck with him; his weight fluctuated, but the overall trend was up.

Hed even been telling friends he wanted to get back into the gym, but the Fitbit clarified just how far off-track hed gotten. I quickly realized how unhealthy I was and decided that was no longer acceptable, he says.

Wrye started rigorously tracking everything in his diet, aiming for a 1000-calorie deficit every day. He started walking and counting his steps, following the progression guidelines in the Fitbit app. Within three months, (more 1.4 million steps and 1000 kilometers) hed lost around 45 pounds.

I was extremely happy with the weight loss, but started to notice that after 10 years of basically no exercise I had very little muscle mass under all that fat, he says. Worried he was becoming skinny-fat, he wanted to wanted to . I was embarrassed to go to the gym because I knew I was weak, he says. I could barely do 10 pushups.

Looking online for guidance, he found Jeremy Ethiers program. He followed it exactly and saw immediate results. He started at 176 and about 18 percent body fat. Sixteen weeks later, he had dropped to 163 pounds and 8 percent body fat. All told, hed slimmed down from 220 pounds, first by paying attention to his diet and walking more, then by getting into the gym. His waist size dropped from 34 inches to 31.

Wrye kept his progress relatively quiet, but friends were shocked and impressed when he posted photos of his results. I have definitely had a boost in confidence since I lost the weight and much more since I started putting on more muscle mass. he says. My mood, temperament and overall mental health has vastly improved as well. The results and physical well-being have kept him motivated; next hes looking to bulk up and add some more muscle mass.

He credits his success to having the right program. Find a reputable trainer or online workout program, he says, and follow it rigorously. Dont chase a fad, and be consistent. Be vigilant on your nutrition and tracking everything you eat. Nutrition is everything for weight loss.

Kay Featherstone and Kate Allinson were at a Spice Girls concert last spring, just two figures in a sea of people. As they gazed around the stadium, Featherstone broke down in tears. Not because of anything the Spice Girls were singing, but because the two chefs were consumed by the thought of their own followers; they have more than 900,000 on Facebook. When we go to a gig, its like: We could fill this space so many times! It becomes very, very scary, Featherstone says.

They got the same feeling at Fleetwood Mac. Featherstone has sweaty palms just thinking about it. She and Allinson, who are business as well as life partners, try to forget the noughts and imagine a community of 900, but its still a long way from the days when they had their own restaurant with customers who came in every Sunday and even brought the pair presents if they went on a cruise.

No wonder Allinson, 48, and Featherstone, 34, sound bewildered, if not downright terrified. Their success as the chef duo Pinch of Nom has been sudden. Last spring, their first book of simple slimming recipes sold 500,000 copies in just five weeks (and recently passed the 1 million mark). Last months follow-up, Everyday Light, sold nearly 130,000 in its first week, knocking David Walliams from the top of the bestseller list.

It has been a little bit crazy, Featherstone whispers, as if danger lurks nearby. They have had offers for TV shows offers for everything but have declined them all because they are really shy, says Featherstone, although she is the gobbier half because Kate doesnt usually like to talk. (Thats fair, says Allinson, whose T-shirt is emblazoned with the slogan: Introverts unite separately in your own homes.) When I ask if they might choose to meet their followers Im thinking of events they say that they did bump into some once, and you cant say it wont happen again. But it has never been about us, Featherstone says, and Allinson, a sort of quiet chorus, echoes her words. Its never been about us.

This is something of a mantra for Featherstone and Allinson, and Im intrigued by their wish to deny they are protagonists in their own enterprise. After all, many of their recipes are autobiographical. Tin of praters, a bacon, potato and onion bake, is lifted straight from Featherstones childhood, while the entire Pinch of Nom adventure took off when the two went along to their local Slimming World in Wirral four years ago, then began to post their own recipes to a growing Facebook community.

Their personal story is at the heart of their business but so is their disavowal of it. We dont spout about ourselves. Were not that sort, Featherstone says. They dont take selfies; even on their first date, the only picture they took was of a gull. Photographs of them are rare.

Neither of them has ever followed a specific diet; not Atkins, 5:2, keto nor intermittent fasting. In many ways, they are unlikely authors of a diet book. And this, I suspect, is at the heart of the pressure they feel a double bind in which the story of their efforts to lose weight speaks to their community, but also creates an expectation for a narrative of progress. I sometimes worry what people will think of us. Like, why the hell are you pushing a diet book when youre not a skinny minny? Featherstone says. Because its the accepted norm that people lose weight, [then] they do a book. But were still in that process.

In newspaper articles, Allinson and Featherstone are often described as two fat chefs. They laugh uproariously when I point this out. Do you know we have a little list of the things we have been described as? Featherstone says. Fat. Middle-aged. Jolly. Allinson chuckles.

We found it really funny, Featherstone says. Then the tone abruptly shifts.

Sadly, it is the way that some people talk about people of our size. Fat is a word that people will use willy-nilly to describe people of size. And I personally hate it, Featherstone says. It makes me angry deep inside

In March, the pair revealed they were aiming to lose 190kg (30 stone) between them. Featherstone had so far lost 44kg and Allinson 31kg. Im curious as to how they divvied up the target. Featherstone says: We came up with that between us. They didnt figure out how much each wanted to lose? Weve never really had a target, Allinson says. Because I think that can put a lot of pressure on.

And we dont do pressure, Featherstone adds. But surely two books in the space of a year put pressure on them? We dont intentionally put pressure on ourselves, Allinson says. Is a better way of putting it, Featherstone nods.

Im curious to know if they have lost more weight since the first book, but Featherstone says that the numbers are still what they were.

The body of any diet author will always be taken as a measure of success. Is that on their mind? It cant not be, Featherstone says. We think about things a lot. Its why were both so anxious all the time We still struggle. Even now. We kind of fluctuate. We have a steady loss. And while fluctuation and steadiness may seem at odds with each other, no doubt those who are sharing their weight-loss journey will relate to the apparent contradiction.

Weve always been really honest and open about it, Allinson says.

They have had an intense and challenging year, adjusting not just to huge public interest, but also to the loss of Allinsons mum. Or, as Featherstone puts it: Weve had a great year, but weve also had a s**t year. Allinsons mother died in January, the day after the couple told her they were going to publish a book. When Allinson says this, her eyes are wet and shiny.

Has anyone got a tissue? Featherstone interjects. I assume she is asking for Allinson, but she quickly adds: Because Im wearing mascara and I know whats going to happen. Allinson fishes in her bag and passes her one. They happily rattle off their differences Allinson is organised, decisive and likes strong tea; Featherstone is disorganised, indecisive, talkative and takes her tea milky. But the two of them seem to understand and meet each others needs..

They met nearly 15 years ago, having seen each others profiles on Gaydar Girls. But I didnt message you for ages, Featherstone says. When they met, they got in the car and ended up in Rhyl, north Wales.

Within six months, Featherstone had moved into Allinsons family home in New Brighton, Wallasey, where the pair still live with Allinsons older sister, Lisa, and her dad (whom the three of them look after), as well as two cats. Ive been in the same house for how long is it? Forty-five years, Allinson says.

Before this one, she lived in the house over the back, which was her nans B&B. I am trying to picture how the house just an old Victorian one, Allinson says must have felt with five adults in it.

When they met, Allinson ran her own restaurant, Cromwells, in nearby Irby. Featherstone quickly took on front of house. Food was the driver of their relationship, and they went into work even when the restaurant was closed. I washed the pots. I wanted to learn how this whole thing worked. In their downtime, they watched, among other things, Two Fat Ladies (they have the DVDs) and ate lots of Chinese takeaways.

While Allinson had been to catering college and had gone on to be the head chef for the Boddingtons chain, Featherstone had left school at 16. She had helped a bit in her parents florist shop and did voiceovers at a radio station in Liverpool, but food and Allinson provided a place that felt like home.

The restaurant was hard work. Things came to a head when Allinsons mum, who did the accounts, had a brain haemorrhage. Within a few months, the restaurant closed, as they focused on caring for her. We grieved for the restaurant, Featherstone says. It hit us hard. Next they worked for a Canadian IT company which, if Ive understood correctly, speeds up the internet by using datacentres on the edge of the cloud. It sounds an unlikely fit, but both women say they wanted nothing to do with food after the restaurant shut. In between were months where we didnt do a whole bunch of much.

Then, in January 2016, Lisa persuaded them to go to Slimming World. They began to create the dishes that went into the first book in the tiny family kitchen that, they say, is smaller than the toilet in the offices of their London publisher, where we are meeting.

They photographed their food at the dining-room table. It must have been a squeeze, but Allinsons mum said: If you want to do it, do it well. Allinsons dad lost a stone unintentionally just by eating their food. Then at Slimming World one week, they heard another person discussing a Pinch of Nom recipe and realised how far they had come. At that point, no one in the group knew who they were.

Now they have a test kitchen, a team of 11 and an army of followers they are scared to think about. Featherstone, Allinson and their family all eat the food they make. When people are trying to diet, and the rest of the family dont need to, it can feel as if youre on your own, Featherstone says. She knows this from personal experience. At her all-girls school, she was the tall one and the big one and dieted to fit in, but was bullied. The experience of being different hardened me, she says. But I suspect this hardening is a work-in-progress.

I am surprised, when I get home, and reread the articles that describe Allinson and Featherstone as two fat chefs, to see that the person who chose those words was none other than Featherstone herself. I email her to ask why, given how the description angers her, and she replies that it was a way of saying it first Its an ownership thing. I can call myself fat but no one else has that right.

Over the past six months, however, something has shifted; her feelings have evolved. Its not a word I like any more. Guardian
