Writing helps declutter your mind and also helps you keep your life in track. In fact it can be a very useful tool is tracking your life. Maintaining a journal does not only mean keeping a record of what you are eating but make it a daily journal. Include your daily steps, your diet, your cheat meals, your workout, your health updates, emotional updates, all in your journal. This will help you to review your day in a holistic manner. On days when you have walked less, and had more of a sedentary day, use your journal as a way to keep a check on your day. Choose a diary that you can carry with you everywhere and add details as much real time as possible. On busy days, you can also add it before bedtime as that will be the best time to reflect upon the day and accordingly plan the next day. Apart from adding simple daily notes, add additional thoughts to it. If you indulged in a cheat meal someday, add additional notes on why you feel you strayed from your health goals. Furthermore, you can set your goals and then monitor their progress with your entries.
To ensure you feel encouraged and it does not feel like a busy chore, buy interesting coloured pens, and designate a specific colour to each day. For example, use purple for a day when you worked out, ate well and felt happy. Use Red for the day you were not happy with your diet.

Gordon Ramsay will be celebrating Christmas with his family this year. Fans of the chef can watch him tonight on ITV as he explores the Christmas with two other television favourites. Tonight on Gordon, Gino and Fred: Christmas Road Trip they will head to Morocco in North Africa.
This approach is inspired by Asian lifestyles, the chef explained.
I like to keep on my toes and eat small bits. Almost like in Hong Kong - four or five times a day, small bowls of food, he added.
The chef outlined his diet in a recent Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit.
He said: "I have a breakfast with oatmeal, that's the first thing, and that sets me up for the rest of the day."
Gordon has much to stay fit for, having a welcomed a new member of the family recently.
The 53-year-old has five children, most recently welcoming Oscar Ramsay in April this year.
His other children are Meghan, 21, Matilda, 18, Jack, 19, and Holly Anna, also 19.
Another celebrity chef who has slimmed down is an Essex born fan favourite.

Holly Willoughby has had a long career in television, spanning almost 20 years. As well as This Morning, Holly currently hosts Dancing on Ice. Holly regularly posts images of herself on Instagram looking toned and in shape, and fans have noticed, with several people bombarding the star on a daily basis by asking questions about how she has lost weight.
However, despite seeming to look trimmer, the mum-of-three doesnt want to give away too much about her diet.
Speaking to Prima Magazine, Holly said: I try not to focus too much on my appearance. As long as Im being healthy, thats good enough for me.
Earlier this year, the television host revealed why she didn't want to talk about her diet.
She told the Sunday Times: It's a personal thing for me, and I think people get obsessive with it.

"Everybody knows what leads to a healthy lifestyle, but it's not up to me to give you a blow-by-blow account of what I've eaten that day. It's not helpful, and it's not what's important.
While she has remained tight-lipped about just how she stays fit and healthy, her Celebrity Juice co-star Keith Lemon wasn't quite so secretive.
Keith revealed her trim figure was down to boxing.
He told the Sun Online: "I've heard a rumour that it's some sort of boxing.

"I asked if she was going to be bringing a fitness DVD out, because everyone's going to be saying, 'I want a body like Holly Willoughby!'"
And Keith says the TV presenter is "sick" of answering questions about it.

"Then everyone picked up on it, and we were at a party a while later and I said, 'I bet you're sick to death of everyone asking you how you've lost it...but how have you lost it?'Holly's always been a total babe.
Despite keeping tight-lipped about her slim figure, a TV source spoke out about Hollys diet.
The source told The Mirror: Holly is determined to keep her new-look body so she eats chicken, carrots, and hummus.
The source, however, did claim that Holly has a sweet tooth and occasionally can be spotted tucking into one particular sweet treat to calm her cravings.
Youll never see her without a pack of mango either, to satisfy her sweet tooth, they said.
The source added that Holly has rediscovered herself after adopting a new healthy lifestyle: "She says she's discovered a 'new me' and won't be giving up anytime soon."
As well as following a healthy diet, Lynne Robinson, director of London-based Body Control Pilates, has said she has worked with the star on her exercise routine.
I worked with Holly for several months, teaching her privately at her home once a week, she told The Sun.
Holly had postnatal matt work classes which concentrated on strengthening and toning her core.
Recently, Holly shared a series of images with her six million Instagram followers that showed off her trim physique.
In the images, Holly posed in a sleek red dress with a square neckline, black block belt and a pair of black suede heels.
She later also shared an image of herself in the same outfit alongside Father Christmas.

Falls are a risk for everyone during slushy winter months, but the risk is especially high for people with cancer. Memorial Sloan Kettering physical therapist Jillian Hobson walks readers through what they can do to minimize the chance of falling.
Why are people with cancer prone to falls?Older adults with a history of cancer have anywhere between a 15% and 20% greater risk of falling compared to the general population of adults age 65 or older. Thats because cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can cause side effects that increase the risk of falls. These include weight loss, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling in the feet, dizziness, changes in eyesight and fatigue. When you lose sensation in your feet, for example, its harder to find your balance during challenging situations, such as walking on a slippery sidewalk. Its harder to know how to find your center of gravity.
Are there warning signs that a person may be at a greater risk for a fall?There are several behaviors that suggest a person with a history of cancer may be at a greater risk for falling. The person may rely on furniture and walls for support when walking around the house. They may trip or have times when they almost fall. Someone who has fallen in the past or is at risk for falling may also avoid crowded environments, such as busy sidewalks, the grocery store or other peoples homes. At MSK, outpatient physical therapists ask every patient, regardless of age, Have you fallen in the past 12 months? If they say yes, we try to prevent it from happening again.
What steps can people take to minimize their risk of falling?There are many. First, secure throw rugs to the floor with nonslip backing. Clear hallways of clutter, and consider installing handrails in the bathroom or for outdoor stairs. Formulate a plan for snow removal during the winter, preferably before snow starts. During the winter, wear boots with good traction. People who are concerned about falling or have fallen in the past should speak to their doctor to see if physical therapy could help.
What should someone do in the event of a fall?Today, there are many smartphone apps that can signal a fall to emergency responders. Some smartwatches also have an alert system that can tell when a fall has taken place and can call 911 for you if you are unable. Its important that your cell phone stays with you at all times and stays on in case of an emergency.
In the event of a fall, people should contact their medical team immediately to determine if they need follow-up care or a referral to physical therapy. If physical therapy is recommended, the physical therapist will identify exercises that promote improved balance, strength and stability. And because falls are not entirely preventable, a physical therapist will also teach strategies for safely getting up from the floor if a fall occurs.

Gift-giving is a big deal this time of year.
To findthe perfect gift, Americans will spend about 15 hours shopping. Women will doabout twice as much as men. And theyll shell out about $1 trillion on gifts.
Whileretailers relish the holiday shopping season as a time when consumers opentheir purses or wallets, for many consumersespecially those who do not likeshoppingthese days are filled with dread. They mark moments when shoppers clogmalls, web sites become overloaded and delivery trucks block streets. Theentire process generates untold amounts of stress and anxiety.
Onesource of stress is just how much to spend on gifts. Spending too much can putyou in financial distress. Spending too little may make you look cheap.
How doyou decide whats the right amount to spend on gifts?
As an economist,I study holidays and gift giving because a large fraction of retail shopping isdriven by seasonal events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and SuperSaturdayalso and more appropriately known as Panic Saturdaywhich is the lastSaturday before Christmas.
Gift-giving isstressful because nobody wants to buy what they think is a perfect gift only todiscover it is a dud. The long lines of people returning items after theholidays seem evidence enough for that.
Thishas led some economists to argue theres a dead weight loss to Christmaspresents that destroys as much as a third of their actual value. A 2018 studyestimated Americans spend $13 billion a year on unwanted gifts. Other economists, however, have resisted thisScrooge-like view of gift-giving and point to evidence that a present canactually have more value to the recipient than the price the giver paid. Inother words, a gift, even when technically unwanted, could have more valuesimply because someone else bought it for you.
SO ifyoure dead set on buying some gifts, how much should you budget for it?
Sincegifting is a social act, it makes sense to consider how much other peopletypically spend.
Thereare a number of surveys run each year that ask people during the fall toestimate what they plan on spending for holiday gifts. The National RetailFederations annual survey of holiday spending estimates the typical Americanwill spend $659 on gifts for family, friends and coworkers in 2019. On the highend, Gallup puts the average at $942, with more than a third of respondentsexpecting to spend over $1,000 on gifts.
Butthese figures arent that helpful for an individual since $659 means somethingdifferent to someone making $40,000 a year versus $200,000.
Thatswhere the Consumer Expenditure Survey comes in. Its a large survey run by theBureau of Labor Statistics that tracks the spending habits of 12,000 to 15,000families each year. The government uses the survey to determine the cost ofliving and inflation rates for the typical family.
Thesurvey follows gift-giving very precisely. It has categories for common holidaypresents like electronics, books and clothes, as well as gifts that typicallyarent associated with the season, such as housing and transportation.
Afterremoving these non-holiday gifts, the typical US family spends about 1 percentof its annual take-home pay on gifts. So whatever you earn, you could multiplyit by 1 percent to get a figure that is in the ballpark of what the averageAmerican spendsbut wont break the bank.
WHILEcalculating a gift budget is one way to take the stress out of how much tospend on gifts, my family has another: Only give gifts to children.
Adultsget wrapped boxes filled with paper. After the real gifts are opened and theyoung children are safely moved out of the way, we crumple up the paper andthrow it at each other in our annual paper fight.
Thatkeeps the cost down while making the kids feel special. It also ensures thekids dont feel left out when their friends talk about the gifts they received.Other families follow their own methods for controlling expenses, such assecret Santa gifts or by focusing attention more on togetherness than on thestuff received.
Whether you have a paper fight or follow another family tradition, my main message is that it doesnt take very much money to make the winter holidays memorable.

My husband has been diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. His doctor told him to lose weight and he tries, but he ends up getting discouraged and goes off his diet. Im worried about his health, but what can I do?

Dear Lauren,
One of the most difficult things in life is watching someone struggle with a health condition. It is perhaps more difficult than when we struggle ourselves. Of course, you worry about your husbands health and you can offer love and support in a number of ways. If you do the cooking, prepare tasteful, healthy meals that fit into his health plan. Encourage him to join a support group, as these have been linked to increased success rates. These groups meet in-person and online, and you can find one near you at liverfoundation.org.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a condition where fat builds up in the liver and it is estimated that about 100 million Americans are living with this disorder. At one time, fatty liver occurred almost always as a result of excessive alcohol intake, but with increased rates of obesity in society, the condition now occurs in non-alcoholics. If left untreated, it may lead to inflammation and damage to the liver, a condition known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Since these conditions often have no symptoms, it is important to have an annual physical exam where your doctor can order blood work to monitor liver enzyme levels.
Most people who have NAFLD or NASH live a normal life with a stable disease. However, it is possible that NASH will lead to cirrhosis, which increases the risks of liver failure and liver cancer.
Risk factors for NAFLD include obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. While most of us are familiar with obesity and diabetes, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are lesser known conditions. Insulin resistance occurs when the pancreas secretes insulin, but it cannot make it into the cells where it is needed. This, in turn, leads to increased blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are high, fat cannot be broken down efficiently, leaving high levels of fatty acids in the bloodstream. These fatty acids make their way to the liver but cannot be metabolized effectively, so they accumulate.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of health conditions that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke). In order to have this diagnosis, one must have three or more of following conditions: high blood pressure (or taking medication for this condition), obesity, insulin resistance, low HDL (good cholesterol) or high triglycerides (or taking medication for this condition).
Currently, there are no medications to treat fatty liver disease and NASH, but the conditions are treatable. The most successful plan is weight loss and exercise. A reduction of 7-10 percent of total bodyweight has been shown to improve outcomes. It is important not to lose weight too quickly as this can make the situation worse. Your husbands physician will have him work with a Registered Dietitian to develop a meal plan that will produce a slow, consistent weight loss. My blessings to you and your husband. Losing weight shouldnt be a short-term solution
Extra body fat is a risk factor for developing chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. With two in three Australians carrying too much body fat, many of us may be well-intentioned, but not making the best choices when it comes to what we eat.
Weight loss is largely a balance of choosing the right foods and being physically active in order to tip our internal energy balance scales in the right direction.
For the most part, quick-fix diets are based on calorie restriction as a means of weight loss. They focus on different strategies to get you to eat fewer calories without having to actively think about it.
Fad diets tend to share similar characteristics, such as eating fewer varieties of foods, fasting, and replacing meals.
Loading
But weight loss isnt just about swapping one or two foods for a month or two; its about establishing patterns to teach our bodies new habits that can be maintained into the future.
Fad diets and quick-fix options can be limited in several respects. For example, they can be difficult to stick to, or people on them can regain weight quickly after stopping the diet. In some cases, there is insufficient research around their health effects in the longer term.
Lets take a look at the way some of these characteristics feature in three popular diets.
Juicing or detoxification diets usually last two to 21 days and require a person to attempt a juice-focused form of fasting, often in combination with vitamin or mineral supplements in place of all meals.
People on this diet lose weight rapidly because of the extremely low calorie intake. But this is a severely restricted type of diet and particularly difficult to follow long-term without a risk of nutrient deficiency.
Also, while it might hold appeal as a marketing buzzword, detoxification is not a process the body needs to go though. Our livers are efficient at detoxifying with very little help.
An intermittent fasting diet involves a combination of fasting days and usual eating days. The fasting strategies include complete fasting (no food or drinks are consumed on fasting days) and modified fasting (20-25% of calories is consumed on fasting days).
Loading
This diet leads to weight loss due to an overall decrease in calorie intake. But its hard to stick with the fasting pattern as it results in intense hunger. Similarly, this diet can lead to binge eating on usual eating days.
But even though people are allowed to eat what they want on non-fasting days, research shows most do not over-eat.
Overall, for people who are able to stick with intermittent fasting, we dont have enough evidence on the benefits and harms of the diet over time.
Long-term energy restriction without fasting may result in the same weight outcomes and may be a better approach to continued weight management.
The palaeolithic (paleo) diet was designed to reflect the foods consumed by our Stone Age ancestors before the agricultural revolution.
The paleo diet excludes processed foods and sugars. This recommendation lines up with the current evidence-based dietary recommendations. However, the paleo diet also excludes two major food groups grain and dairy foods.
Loading
While short-term weight loss might be achieved, theres no conclusive proof of benefit for weight loss and nutritional balance in the long term. People who follow the paleo diet might be at risk of nutritional deficiencies if theyre not getting any grains or dairy.
So its worth taking cues from the paleo diet in terms of limiting processed foods and sugars. But if youre thinking of adopting the diet in its entirety, it would be important to seek support from a health professional to ensure youre not missing out on essential nutrients.
Things to look out for
So how can you tell if a diet is likely to lead to long-term weight loss success? Here are some questions to ask:
If the answer to these three questions is yes, youre likely on to a good one. But if youre getting at least one no, you might want to think carefully about whether the diet is the right choice for sustained weight loss.

Jamie Oliver returns to screens with Christmas Countdown today, revealing the best recipes for the festive season. As someone who works with fine food everyday, Jamie found that he packed on the pounds - but managed to lose two stone in recent years.
He revealed: I lost 12 kilos quite quickly and I didn't do it through not eating. I ate a lot, more than I was used to.
Jamie turned to seaweed to help speed up his weight loss. Seaweed is used to lose weight because it is low in calories and high in fibre, making it filling.

Speaking to Mail Online, Jamie said: I thought seaweed was hippy, globetrotting stuff but our ancestors ate seaweed.
It has got a load of iodine and is the most nutritious vegetable in the world."
Jamie took the decision to slim down after realising how unhealthy his life had become.
During an appearance on Loose Women in 2015, he said: I got toward my 40th birthday and I realised I hadnt spent much time looking after myself.
I went back to school and started studying nutrition, started travelling to parts of the world to where people live the longest lives and started looking at their lifestyles. That was the journey and its been amazing.
