Brie is a soft cows milk cheese that originated in France but is now popular worldwide.

Its pale yellow with an edible rind of white mold.

Whats more, brie has a creamy texture and unique, mild taste and aroma thats characteristic of mold-aged cheeses. Its usually served with bread, crackers, or fruit.

This unique cheese may also have some health benefits due to its dairy content and the ripening process it undergoes.

This article reviews everything you need to know about brie, including its nutritional content and potential health benefits.

Brie is a high fat, nutrient-rich cheese. It contains protein and fat, as well as several vitamins and minerals.

One ounce (28 grams) of full fat brie provides (1):

Most of the fat in brie is saturated fat from cows milk. Although this fat has historically been linked to heart disease, emerging research shows that it isnt as harmful as previously thought (2, 3).

Brie is also a good source of protein, with 1 ounce (28 grams) offering a little less protein than a medium egg (4).

In addition to its numerous vitamins and minerals, this cheese is a good source of both riboflavin and vitamin B12. These vitamins play important roles in energy production and metabolism (5, 6).

Brie is a high fat cheese that packs as much protein as a medium egg in just 1 ounce (28 grams). It also offers sizable amounts of vitamin B12 and riboflavin.

Brie is made by adding the enzyme rennet to milk, along with salt and bacteria known as cheese cultures. The mixture is then left to ripen for about 1 month.

During the ripening process, white mold forms the rind of the cheese. Unlike other molds that grow on food, this one is perfectly safe to eat (7).

Several varieties of brie exist, as it can be made with whole or partly skimmed milk, ripened for varying durations, and contain added herbs and spices.

These changes can significantly alter both its taste and texture. For instance, a longer ripening period results in a tangier, softer cheese.

Brie can be eaten on its own uncooked or baked but is usually paired with bread, crackers, fruit, or nuts. It makes for a simple, elegant appetizer alongside crackers and jam or jelly. Baked brie is wrapped in puff pastry or drizzled with honey.

Brie forms a rind of edible, white mold during the ripening process. This scrumptious cheese is typically served with bread, crackers, fruit, or jam.

Brie contains protein and fat along with calcium, vitamin B12, and riboflavin, making it very nutrient-dense. It offers 100 calories per 1 ounce (28 grams).

Fat and protein are associated with increased feelings of fullness, which may aid weight loss and appetite control (8, 9).

In addition, full fat dairy is associated with a healthier body weight and does not appear to increase your risk of heart disease (10, 11).

Furthermore, brie is high in riboflavin and vitamin B12, which play key roles in energy production. Its calcium is important for healthy bone growth while its vitamin A promotes healthy skin and vision (5, 6, 14, 15).

As a result of the ripening process, brie also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a highly anti-inflammatory compound that may exert anticancer effects (12).

In fact, in one test-tube study, brie and other ripened cheeses slowed the growth of leukemia cells (13).

Nonetheless, human research is needed.

Brie is nutrient-dense and aids feelings of fullness. As such, it may promote appetite control and weight loss. Early research suggests that it may even fight cancer cells, though more studies are necessary.

Soft cheeses like brie contain a small amount of lactose, a natural milk sugar.

Interestingly, up to two-thirds of the global population is lactose intolerant and should limit their dairy intake. However, cheeses are generally well tolerated, as much of their lactose content is removed or converted during the cheesemaking process (16).

That said, people with a milk protein allergy shouldnt eat this cheese.

Otherwise, including moderate amounts of brie in your diet shouldnt have any significant side effects.

The recommended serving size of brie is 1 ounce (28 grams), which is about the size of your thumb. Eating excessive amounts may cause bloating or constipation and lead to high calorie intake.

Additionally, 1 ounce (28 grams) of brie contains 6% of the DV for sodium, which adds up quickly if you pair it with salty crackers or nuts. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals (17).

Finally, pregnant women should avoid unpasteurized brie, which is made with milk that did not undergo a heating process to remove bacteria. It may harbor the harmful bacteria that cause listeriosis, which can be fatal (18).

You can enjoy limited amounts of brie if you are lactose intolerant but not if you are allergic to milk protein. Pregnant women should avoid unpasteurized varieties. Otherwise, moderate intake does not have any side effects.

Brie should be stored in airtight packaging or plastic wrap in the refrigerator. Given that its a soft cheese, its particularly prone to spoilage or bacterial contamination if left outside of the fridge.

Most manufacturers recommend consuming the entire package by the expiration date.

However, if the cheese looks and smells fine past its use-by date, its generally safe to eat as long as it has been pasteurized (19).

All the same, children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems should not eat expired brie even if it looks and smells normal due to the risk of exposure to harmful bacteria.

Its best to eat or freeze brie within 13 weeks of opening the package, as it will continue to ripen in your fridge.

Brie can be frozen for up to 6 months if tightly wrapped in foil and placed in a freezer-safe bag. Nonetheless, it may be crumbly after you thaw it and more suitable for cooking rather than serving as an appetizer.

Remember to discard any brie that has been at room temperature for longer than 4 hours (19).

Brie has a perfectly safe layer of white mold on its outer surface.

However, blue or green mold indicates that the cheese has gone bad and should be thrown out.

With harder cheeses like Parmesan, you can cut off moldy areas and eat the remainder of the product. However, visible mold in soft varieties like brie often indicates that mold spores have contaminated the entire cheese (19).

In addition, overripe brie or brie that has been aged for too long may be excessively runny and have a strong ammonia odor, which comes from the bacteria used during manufacturing. Although its safe to eat, overripe brie may have an off-putting taste and smell.

Brie should be stored in airtight packaging in your refrigerator and discarded 13 weeks after opening. If you see blue or green mold at any point, throw away the cheese.

Common workout injuries and how to prevent them – NBC News

Even if exercise is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health, there's still a risk of injury. It may be a simple pulled muscle or soreness that requires rest, while other more serious injuries can cause you to make a trip to the doctors office.

Christian Glaser, DO, doctor of sports medicine at MedStar Health at The St. James, and Dr. Michael C. Schwartz, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at ProHEALTH Care, both say they see a variety of exercise-induced injuries in their exam rooms every day.

The most common culprits? Shoulder and low-back injuries, says Glaser. Dr. Schwartz agrees, and also adds knee injuries to the list.

Were breaking down these common injuries, including how to know when your injury is worth a trip to the doctor's office (and what treatment may look like) and how you can prevent them in the first place.

Schwartz says that rotator cuff injuries are among the most common workout-related injuries seen by orthopedists and sports medicine specialists. These injuries usually occur from common training errors. Performing shoulder-related exercises too frequently without giving the muscles and tendons a chance to heal between workouts is usually the most common cause, he says. In addition, rather than increasing exercise gradually, working out vigorously can strain the rotator cuff causing inflammation and injury.

Schwartz says no one is immune. In my practice, I have seen many patients both young and old who have presented with the chief complaint of an audible pop with acute pain and swelling in their shoulder, which resulted from lifting heavy weights particularly overhead, he says. MRIs in these cases often confirm the diagnosis of an acute rotator cuff tear, which requires surgery in most situations to reattach the tendon to the bone to allow healing and improvement in function.

Glaser explains that treatment for both injuries varies on the degree and severity. Smaller tears may require anti-inflammatory medication, injections or physical therapy, while complete rotator cuff tears commonly require surgery.

To avoid shoulder and rotator cuff injuries in the first place, I advise my personal training clients to focus on proper form and avoid over-lifting with dumbbells. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Like shoulder injuries, most low back injuries occur because of working out with too heavy of a weight and/or with poor technique and form, Glaser explains. Low back injuries can occur to a variety of structures: muscles, discs and bone, he says. How do you know if youve injured your low back? It could present itself as soreness or feel like a pulling or dull ache. Luckily, injuries in the lower back while working out are usually acute in nature, Glaser says. A common occurrence is the muscle strain, which often times can be seen at the end of a workout, trying to get just one more repetition in. The athlete is not only fighting the workout load, but also some muscle fatigue, which then results in injury. Injuries can become more complicated if there is a rotational force involved, which can damage a disc or even bone. Treatment for back injuries include physical therapy, NSAIDs, a variety of back injections and surgery.

So how can you avoid these low back injuries? Glaser provides a few tips:

Speaking of building core strength, as a Pilates instructor, I highly advise my clients work on abdominal exercises like planks or Pilates roll ups to help keep the core in check. Then, when you start performing the aforementioned exercises like lifting, bending, squatting, etc. your core will engage and can help support and protect your low back.

Schwartz says that meniscus injuries are one of the most common exercise-related injuries in both younger and older individuals. The meniscus is a c-shaped cushion within the knee, which is made of a rubbery structure known as fibrocartilage. They function as a cushion or shock absorber for the knee, protecting the adjacent smooth cartilage of the knee while also providing stability, he explains. The meniscus is very vulnerable to injury due to the fact that it is generally very thin, similar to a wafer, and it has limited blood supply."

To minimize the risk of this kind of injury, Schwartz advises to avoid doing deep squatting exercises in which the hips go below the knees. Also, performing exercises which involve considerable twisting should be performed very carefully and with proper technique since this movement places considerable stress on the meniscus, he advises.

A wide range of treatments are available for this type of injury, including rest, anti-inflammatory medication, ice, physical therapy and injections. Schwartz says persistent symptoms including pain and loss of range of motion may require surgery.

The most common form of exercise that Schwartz sees as a culprit for knee injuries? HIIT, or high intensity interval training. While these exercises have been shown to significantly improve conditioning and lead to reductions in body fat mass, they do require strict technique to complete the workout effectively and safely, he explains.

The good news is you dont have to give up your HIIT workouts. Here are a few ways to protect your knees while training:

Fitness is not ripped muscles or abs. Fitness is a way of life a healthy life that makes you feel good everyday. For 42-year-old Narendra Firodia, losing weight was just the first step to realising this goal.

My goal was to get healthy and fit! And, I knew that to make it happen, the first step that Id have to take was - lose my bodys excess weight. This first step commenced two years ago when Firodia weighed a whopping 102 kgs.

Two years ago, as I was approaching my 40th birthday, I met Luke Coutinho, author, holistic lifestyle coach and co-founder of RESET - Holistic Living Concepts during the learning session of Entrepreneurs Organization Pune, he says. Coutinho is a well-known lifestyle coach, who forefronts healthy eating habits and wellness practices over fad diets. I had been following Luke on Facebook for a while before I saw him address the crowd in Pune that day. I had always thought that one day, when I meet him, Ill ask him to guide me on a path of holistic living, he informs.

When I finally met Luke, post the event, we went through my medical records, and consequently, I enrolled myself in Lukes one year program that was centered around eating right, exercising, sleeping and creating a balance between my professional and personal life to get started on my weight loss and fitness journey. Below, he highlights the key elements of this one year program and weight loss plan that eventually helped him lose 18 kgs and trim from 102 kgs to 84 kgs.

My weight loss plan, comprising a workout routine and a daily diet plan, was customised according to my body type. I was also assigned my own personal nutritionist, who charted a new diet plan for me devoid of wheat, milk, sugar, tea and coffee. While these food items were restricted from my diet, the new meals I started consuming werent that different from what I was used to eating.

The new diet focused more on tips for preparation of food, portion control and substituting rich and heavy foods with healthy alternatives such as Poha and Idlis, Jowar/Bajra rotis and Dal, various types of Khichdis and Soups and Salads for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Various types of detox routines also became a part of my overall weight loss plan. According to Luke and Dr Deepti Bagree, Head of Department - Healthcare Division, RESET - Holistic Living Concepts, these detox plans included foods that were easy to digest like fermented foods such as idlis, dosas, probiotic beverages like kombucha, dark coloured fruits and vegetables and makhanas, sprouts as snacks.

Apart from switching to healthier alternatives, following a monthly intermittent fasting routine also greatly helped me get in shape.

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesnt specify which foods you can or cannot eat. It only focuses on when you should eat them.

There are many IF plans and patterns that you can follow, but the most effective one, according to studies is the 16:8 IF diet. The 16:8 IF diet entails one to observe a 16-hour fasting period, followed by an 8-hour eating window.

You can commence a 16-hour fast at 10:00 pm in the night, after you eat your last meal of the day and go to sleep thats 7-8 hours gone right there. You can break the 16-hour fast at 2:00 pm with your lunch and eat small meals till 10:00 pm this makes up the 8-hour eating window. Alternatively, you can also begin your fast at 8 pm and break it at 12 pm, the next day.

As a part of his weight loss exercise regime, Firodia used to brisk walk 12000 steps every day and also devote time to practise Yoga and functional training. Id workout 6 days/week and 1 day was reserved for rest and recovery. But I felt quite energetic on this rest day as well, as I followed what's commonly known as active rest, which essentially translates to keeping the body active by focusing on your daily routine and mundane tasks.

"Luke's team did not just concentrate on tweaking my food habits but also made sure that I slept well and that my mental/emotional health were in tandem with my physical health. Moreover, through this transformation I have become like a brand ambassador of sorts for fitness and healthy food in my hometown of Ahmednagar in Pune. I have also motivated many of my family members and friends to eat healthy and exercise daily to stay fit."

What we reported:This springThe Enquirerreported on Del Hall, a Pleasant Ridge man who spent 46 days on a beer-only fast during Lent. Hall went viral and lost more than 40 pounds during his fast.

Eight months after spending Lent subsistingon beer alone,Dell Hallis already planning his second fast.

Earlier this year, Hallwent viral after posting to social media that he planned to mimic the monks and fast during Lent, using beer as his only calorie intake.The 44-year-old Army veteran and sales director of Fifty West Brewing Co.lost 44 poundsin 46 days.

And now he's planning for a longer fast in 2020.

Toward the end of his 2019 fast, he told The Enquirer "I feel like I'm in my 20s." He lost weight, and his blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol improved.

"I had no idea it was going to get the amount of press and exposure it got," Hall said.

Hall still considers the fast a success, more than half a year later.

In the first few weeks after the fast, Hall put 8 to 10 poundsback on. Now, eight months later, he's added a total of 22 pounds. He haslost a net of 20 pounds.

He hasn't been dieting or watching his carbs. He's experimenting.

A few months ago, he realized he was putting on more weight and thought about cutting back. Instead, he's going to see if he can replicate the results of last year losing 40 pounds, gaining some back and still ending up with a net loss for the year.

"It's a really cool experiment ... maybe I shouldn't diet at all and just see how I do. Lazy me said, 'yeah let's do that,'" Hall said.

Lent starts Feb.26 and ends onApril 9 butHall isn't just doing the standard 46 days.

Like last year, it's all about the challenge.

Hall plans to fast for 50 days, that way he beats out any other beer-only fast records. He's even reached out to Guinness World Records to set the record for most days drinking only beer.

"50 days for Fifty West," Hall said."I'm going to do 50 days,four days pastanyone would normally do this and really stake my claim to the longest record in the world.I'm going to one-up everybody."

Unfortunately, if you want in on the action, Hall has no plans to lead a group through this year's fast.

"It's such an individual thing. I don't know what your body can do. I know I have plenty of body fat to lose," Hall said. "I'm not going to be anyone's doctor."

In 2020, Hall is also planning on being more active.

Lucky for Hall, his companyFifth West is releasing Quencher, a new "healthy-lifestyle" beer with electrolytes expected to be outearly next year.

"This was never about weight loss,it was about the challenge and whether I could do it or not," Hall said.

Now he knows he can and wants to maximize his results during the fast.

"There's more of a weight loss aspect to it this year," Hall said.

Expect to hear more from Hall in the future, because if it goes well again, he plans on continuing his Lenten fast for a few years.

Half of America will be obese within 10 years, study says, unless we work together – wtvr.com

If America does not collectively adopt healthier eating habits, over half of the nation will be obese within 10 years.

Even worse, one in four Americans will be severely obese with a body mass index over 35, which means they will be more than 100 pounds overweight.

That alarming prediction, published Wednesday in NEJM, was the result of a study analyzing 26 years of self-reported body mass index (BMI) data from by over six million American adults.

Considering the challenges of battling weight loss, thats devastating news for the future health of our nation.

Given how notoriously difficult obesity is to treat once its established, you can see that were in an untenable situation, said Aviva Must, chair of Tufts Universitys Public Health and Community Medicine, who was not involved in the study.

The societal cost is high, she said, both in terms of obesity-related health consequences and healthcare expenditures which could bring us to our knees.

One of the first research efforts to drill down to the state level, the study found that 29 states, mostly in the South and Midwest, will be hit the hardest, with more than 50% of their residents considered obese.

But no part of the country is spared in all 50 states, at least 35% of the population will be obese, the study found.

Whats even more concerning is the rise in severe obesity, said lead author Zachary Ward, an analyst at Harvard Chan Schools Center for Health Decision Science.

Nationally, severe obesity typically over 100 pounds of excess weight will become the most common BMI category, Ward said. Prevalence will be higher than 25% in 25 states.

Currently, only 18% of all Americans are severely obese. If the trend continues, the study said, severe obesity would become as prevalent as overall obesity was in the 1990s.

The study also found certain subpopulations to be most at risk for severe obesity: women, non-Hispanic black adults and low-income adults who make less than $50,000 per year.

And we find that for very low-income adults adults with less than $20,000 annual household income severe obesity will be the most common BMI category in 44 states, Ward said. So basically everywhere in the country.

Fifty years ago, obesity was a relatively rare condition, Must said. People who were poor were underweight, not overweight. But that has changed.

One reason is the rise of sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed foods, which contribute calories but little nutrition. Another is that the price of food, including unhealthy fast food choices, has fallen in America when you adjust for inflation.

Low food prices are certainly part of it, Must said. Also limited options for physical activity. And theres a lot being written about the stress of structural racism and how that influences peoples behavioral patterns. So its very complicated.

Theres no rosy picture here, but I dont think we can throw in the towel, Must said. It will probably take lots of federal, state and local policy interventions and regulations to have a big impact. We cant rely on individual behavior change in an environment that is so obesity promoting.

Studies have shown some promising tactics, she said: bolstering local public transportation systems to encourage walking instead of driving; keeping schools open on weekends and during summers to allow access to gyms and swimming pools; and increasing support for farm-to-school and farm-to-work food programs, as well as farmers markets, to boost access to low-cost fruits and vegetables.

Other interventions include calorie labeling on restaurant and drive-thru menus and replacing vending machines with smart snacks in schools.

Weve also looked at eliminating the tax deduction businesses get for advertising unhealthy foods to children, Ward said. The money that they spend on advertising foods can basically be written off as a tax deduction.

That could be one reason why we see such disparities by race, ethnicity or income, Ward said, because companies are directly targeting advertising at these groups.

In a prior study, Ward and his team at Harvard found that three interventions saved more in health care costs than the price to implement them: elimination of the tax deduction on advertising; improving nutrition standards for school snacks; and imposing an excise tax on sugary beverages.

The most cost effective solution was the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The study found the tax saved $30 in health care costs for every dollar spent on the program.

So much added sugar is delivered through sugar-sweetened beverages, and people do have other options for hydration, Must said. I think its an easy target.

But not necessarily a popular one. Still, the complexity of the problem means that a solution will truly take a village, experts say, with every American doing their part.

I dont think its impossible, Must said, pointing to a slowing of the obesity rate in children in America. That trend is the result of interventions in school lunches; snack programs; and a change in the nutritional allowances in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, which helps feed more than seven million pregnant and postpartum women and children until age five.

In 2009 the program decreased the intake of foods and beverages associated with excess weight gain. By simply cutting the juice allowance in half, reducing cheese, requiring whole grain products and requiring low-fat or skim milk, a study found the program reduced the obesity rate in children between two and four years of age and boosted the intake of fruits and vegetables.

That is certainly a model for future attempts among both children and adults, Ward said, adding that if Americans could just keep their current weight instead of gaining, the trends could be reversed.

Its really hard to lose weight, Ward said. Its really hard to treat obesity. So prevention really has to be at the forefront of efforts to combat this growing epidemic.

Weight Loss and Parkinson’s Disease – Parkinson’s News Today

Dad used to tell us that he has two sets of clothes: a normal set and a set of skinny clothes that emerge when he gets sick.

Dad was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in his 30s, and the illness caused him to lose a startling amount of weight. He was thin to begin with, but the disease found ways to take more away.

Ulcerative colitis became more manageable for my dad as time moved forward. He put on a healthy amount of weight and chose his food based on desire rather than necessity. With the help of my mom and his friends, he was able to nurse himself back to health.

But for the next 34 years, his two sets of clothing would hang in the corner of his bedroom closet because he never was certain when his health might change. Today, Parkinsons disease is back to challenge this strategy. And Dads skinny clothes are making an appearance.

Weight loss in relation to Parkinsons disease can occur for a number of reasons. Decreased appetite, additional energy output, and changes in digestion can slow your food intake. And this ultimately can cause a shift in body weight.

It makes sense, really. Dads tremors cause him to expend energy 24 hours a day. Thats a substantial amount of time that is spent in motion. And the body needs fuel to maintain this motion.

Dad seems to eat about the same amount, but what he chooses to eat has changed. My little sister makes sure theres a constant supply of densely packed foods, such as avocados. They juice every morning, squeezing the nutrients out of a shocking amount of produce.

Sometimes I giggle to see him eating a midnight bowl of ice cream or a handful of chocolate. Weight loss almost seems like an opportunity to eat his favorite treats. Dad looks thin, but his doctor seems to think his weight is stable.

In a society where weight loss ads litter social media platforms, it is easy to think that weight loss is a good thing. And it can be. But when uncontrolled, one risks becoming nutritionally deficient. And this ultimately prevents the body from using the building blocks it needs to keep healthy.

According to Parkinsons News Todays Patricia Inacio, extreme weight loss can cause dementia, increased dependency care, and a shorter life expectancy. A study Inacio highlighted evaluated several Parkinsons patients and found that weight loss might be able to point doctors toward an early PD diagnosis. Furthermore, counteracting weight loss might lessen disease-related outcomes.

Whatever doctors continue to discover, managing weight loss appears to be an important element of Parkinsons. And its a common one, too!

More than six years have passed since my dads Parkinsons diagnosis. The journey has been choppy, inconsistent, and filled with color. New challenges always seem to emerge. The disease never slows, but my dad is just as quick to fight back. His adaptability and determination are unmatched.

Today, his pants hang a bit loose around his skinny legs. But the muscles still ripple. His normal clothes have been collecting dust in the back of his closet for a while.

Christmas might be a time when those sizes shift completely, making skinny the new normal. But hes strong. He spends three days of every week at Rock Steady Boxing, preparing himself to better challenge his disease.

During a recent visit to the gym, emotions bubbled to the surface. I had never seen him so committed to tackling an obstacle. And with great effort comes great change.
