Healthy on holiday: weight loss tips for your next trip – The National

Posted: December 16, 2019 at 12:59 am

The tickets are booked, your bags are packed and the office has been notified. Youve crossed your ts and dotted your is in a bid to avoid receiving that bothersome mid-holiday email asking you for details you dont want to be thinking about as you contemplate 2019 and steel your resolve for 2020. Youve earned this break, you deserve this time off, maybe youve even worked hard on your body in the run-up to it. But what if youre not going to ring in the new year looking and feeling quite as fit as you thought youd be?

Winter holidays come with many temptations: marshmallows dipped in steaming mugs of creamy hot chocolate; buttery, cookies and sweets from festive markets; a supersized helping of comforting French fries. Combine these gastronomical indulgences with layered clothing and the extra hours spent in bed, in the warmth, finally at liberty to do nothing, then inevitably, despite your best intentions, youll come back with a thicker midriff.

This is tragically common. A 2016 study, the first of its kind conducted at the University of Georgia, found that adults going on a week-long holiday gained about half a kilo. If youre already overweight, that number is likely to be higher. Worse, that extra weight is tenacious and tends to linger for an average of six weeks. The study also said that most people put on about a kilo a year anyway, so most of us are gaining half our annual allowance or the price we pay for getting older every time we go on holiday. All of this adds up to a phenomenon that researchers call creeping obesity gaining small amounts of weight slowly, leading to increased health problems later in life.

The point of this is not to depress you, or make you look at each morsel you put into your mouth with suspicion and fear, but rather to ensure that all the hard work you put into your body year-round or pre-trip is not for nothing when youre on a break. Turns out, its not that difficult to keep the holiday weight off. Yes, it requires some effort, planning and, as always, self-restraint, but it could be easier than you think.

Pooja Makhija, celebrity nutritionist and author of Eat Delete, says people need to reprogramme their brains and eliminate the negative associations between holidays and weight gain. No matter how many hours you sleep on vacation, youre hopefully a lot more active than you are during your regular, sedentary life. Youre moving around so much while sightseeing, shopping, even just going from one place to another, she says. So unless youre not leaving your bed at all, youre probably clocking in two, three, four times the amount of physical activity you do back home. Then why should you be putting on weight at all?

The answer, Makhija believes, lies in blood sugar levels going haywire. What tends to happen is that we dont eat for long durations. By the time we do eat, were ravenous. Our blood sugar is so low that our brain is incapable of making smart decisions. So we grab the highest calorie foods, with the highest sugar fixes, she says.

The simplest solution is to make sure you eat every two to three hours, choosing healthy cafes and street-food stalls when you can. You can also carry your own little packs of snacks, such as nuts, roasted seeds and low-fat energy bars, and a big bottle of water in your backpack. Set alarms on your phone to remind you to eat and hydrate every few hours. This way, you wont be starving by the time you get to a mall or a restaurant, and even if you indulge, youll be smart about it you will be able to exercise control and eat smaller, single portions of desserts and fried food.

Deanne Panday, Bollywood fitness coach and author of Shut Up And Train!, cautions against starting your break on an unhealthy note. Even before most of us get to our destinations, weve plied our bodies with lethargy-inducing, unhealthy food at the airport and on the plane. Carry healthy, home-cooked meals for your journey. If you dont start your vacation feeling weighed down and bloated, youre much more likely to spend the rest of it without falling off the fitness wagon, she says.

Deanne Panday

Many holiday-goers blame the weather for their weight gain and, indeed, when it comes to fitness, tis not the season to be jolly. Theres a lot of damning research linking weight gain to winter. According to a 2017 study published in Scientific Reports by the University of Alberta, one reason people tend to pile on the kilos in colder climes is the lack of sunlight our cells dont store as much fat when exposed to the Sun. And there are plenty of papers crediting winter weight gain to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) a kind of depression triggered by the shorter days of winter which typically has people reaching for comfort food and foregoing workouts.

Panday urges to instead think of winter as a wonderful weight-loss opportunity, especially in the UAE. Its tough to walk around when the Sun is blazing over your head and youre sweating bullets. But theres no excuse not to when its cooler, she says. Walk instead of taking cabs on your winter break and at home. Incorporate adventure sports into your itinerary. Build a snowman, go skiing. Carry your shopping bags yourself instead of having them delivered to your room. Theres your workout youve done cardio, weights and exercised all your muscles.

Another tip is to use the scales in your room. The idea is not to obsessively weigh yourself three times a day, but to check in with your body every few days, so youre aware of whats going on with the loss-gain situation.

While Panday admits hitting the hotel gym on a holiday can be an unreasonable expectation, fitness trainer Antoni Pecora thinks otherwise. Im not saying you need to spend an hour in the gym when youre on vacation. But 15 to 20 minutes is not an impossible ask.

You can even exercise in your room, on the floor next to your bed before you head out for the day a few reps of push-ups, squats, lunges, planks and abdominal exercises. Doing even that much is enough to keep your muscles flexible, so you dont have to start from square one when you come back. Even better, do it first thing in the morning, because you may not end up doing it if you push it to later in the day. Exercise has the best results when you youre well-rested and fresh.

Oh, and most importantly, adds Pecora, dont destroy the breakfast buffet; its the worst thing to happen to fitness.

Weight loss: Five tasty treats you can burn off in under 20 minutes of exercise – Express

Posted: December 16, 2019 at 12:59 am

Weight loss at Christmas is extremely difficult especially when considering how many calories there are in all of Britains favourite treats. Slimmers know that the key to successful weight loss is being in a calorie deficit, so diet expert, Terri-Ann Nunns, has shared the top five treats that Britons can indulge in during this festive period that can be burnt off in 20 minutes or less of exercise - what are they?

1. Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Buttons (30g)

Its definitely a myth to think that you cant enjoy chocolate as part of a healthy balanced diet, said Terri-Ann Nunns.

If you are craving a chocolate fix, opt for something small but satisfying such as a packet of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Buttons (30g).

It wont damage your calorie intake too much and can easily be burned off.

DON'T MISS

Number of calories: 160

According to Nunns, there are three different exercises that a slimmer can do to burn off the calories from the Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Buttons.

How to burn it off in under 20 minutes:

- Go jogging for 19 minutes

- Swim for 13 minutes

- Circuit training for 17 minutes

2. Digestive Biscuits (x2)

Opting for a biscuit with a cup of tea is a classic mid-afternoon snack and if you can stick to just two Plan Digestive Biscuits, youll be in a position where you can easily burn them off and still feel like youve had a treat, explained Nunns.

Number of calories: 100

Nunns recommends walking, zumba, or most surprisingly, gardening to burn off the calories from eating two Digestive Biscuits.

How to burn it off in under 20 minutes:

- Walking for 13 minutes

- Zumba for 9 minutes

- Gardening for 19 minutes

3. Walkers Cheese and Onion Crisps

Like chocolate, theres no reason that crisps cant be part of a healthy diet as long as they fall within your daily calorie allowance and arent consumed too frequently, explained Nuunns.

A packet of Walkers Cheese and Onion Crisps isnt as damaging as you might think and can be burned off in under 20 minutes.

Similarly as with the other two treats, calories from Walkers Cheese and Onion Crisps can be burned off in under 20 minutes by participating in light exercise.

Number of calories: 130

How to burn it off in under 20 minutes:

- Walk up the stairs for 15 minutes

- Run for 14 minutes

- Go on a bike ride for 17 minutes

4. Butterkist Toffee Popcorn (20g)

If youre heading to the cinema or have a sweet craving you might grab a bag of popcorn as a snack, said Nunns.

Luckily popcorn is a surprisingly low-calorie snack and its made from whole grains a really important part of any diet, explained the diet expert.

The EIGHT ways to lose body fat, according to a nutritionist – Denton Daily

Posted: December 16, 2019 at 12:57 am

You may have a goal to this year more specifically, fat.

May Simpkin, a -based nutritionist says most keen on beating the bulge are keen to lose fat around the middle.

But there is a lot of confusion about how to lose body fat, as opposed to burning the muscle youve been working hard to achieve in the gym.

In a piece for , Ms Simpkin reveals nine ways that you can target your weight loss and reduce fat.

1. Eat an early dinner

Studies show that eating dinner by mid-afternoon alters you bodys fat and carbohydrate burning patterns, which could help you lose fat.

There are various forms of time-restricted feeding including the popular 5:2 (fast for two days on 500 calories, eat healthy but normally for five) or 16:8 (finish eating by 8pm and start eating again at midday the next day leaving 16 hours between last nights dinner and the next days breakfast) diets.

In fact, researchers have concluded that eating between 8am and 2pm, followed by an 18-hour daily fast kept appetite levels more even throughout the day, in comparison to eating between 8am and 8pm.

This fasting approach works on the notion of restricting your energy intake to certain times. By doing so, it could be, as research suggests, an effective way to lose body fat.

After a meal, the digestive system processes and absorbs the food you have just eaten, so that your body can use the nutrients consumed.

This process takes around 4 to 5 hours.

During this time, the body will prioritise using the carbohydrates consumed as its preferred energy source, rather than rely on fat stored in the body.

However, once the carbohydrates have been used, the body will need to use its fat stores as a source of energy which will result in weight loss.

The key here is to ensure that each meal is balanced, satiating and nutrient dense.

2. Boost your protein intake

Protein is a complex nutrient that can boost your metabolism as part of the digestive process.

Researchers from McMaster University found that those eating high protein diets lost more body fat.

Whilst the study involved a tough program of exercise and a controlled diet over four weeks, a similar outcome can be achieved by eating a more balanced meal with good amounts of protein.

Protein rich foods include meat, fish, chicken, eggs and cheese. Nuts, beans, lentils and other pulses are also loaded with protein if youre vegan or vegetarian.

3. Eat more spicy foods

Spicy foods, especially those that contain Capsaicin (a compound in chilli peppers), have been shown to increase metabolism and stimulate the body to burn fat.

It basically means, adding chilli and other spices such as paprika and turmeric can help the body burn fat.

It is important to remember that this effect will only be achieved as part of a balanced diet.

When it comes to food, you should avoid restricting your calories severely through crash diets or cutting out an entire food category.

This is because the weight loss you will experience from a severely restricted diet will not actually be fat loss, but rather loss of water at the outset.

Crash diets are notoriously hard to sustain and once youre back to your original eating habits, the weight will quickly reappear on the scales as water is replaced.

However, if you opt for a less harsh approach to weight loss, with healthier, balanced choices along with moderate activity, you are more likely to sustain this way of eating.

Your body will still initially register weight loss that can be attributed to water loss but if you carry on, the weight you then lose after that will be fat.

If you continue with a highly restricted eating pattern, you will also lose muscle. This is not ideal as this will cause your metabolism to drop as your body burns more calories.

Its actually more beneficial to increase your muscle mass while losing fat, so that you also increase your metabolism, helping speed up weight loss.

If you dont provide your body with enough calories and your body fat becomes too low, it will need to seek out alternative energy sources and start to break down muscle as a result.

As you age, metabolism tends to slow down. However, there is plenty you can do to help maintain good metabolism levels as well as build muscle to help promote your fat loss without feeling tired.

Other fat burning foods to make sure you add to your diet include green tea six cups a day have been shown to help increase metabolism but make sure its strong and has been steeped for at least ten minutes as well as beetroot powder and black pepper.

4. Avoid alcohol

Unlike many foods, alcohol provides empty calories in other words, no nutrients.

Furthermore, alcohol is high in calories and sugar (especially when combined with mixers), providing an immediate fuel for the body to use, rather than fat, but which can quickly turn into excess fat when its not burned off.

The liquid calories alcohol contains is a sure way to sabotage your efforts to lose fat.

5. Avoid liquid calories

Whether its fizzy drinks, high sugar coffees, fruit juices or smoothies, drinks high in sugar and calories will send you on a blood sugar rollercoaster.

As a result, you will crave even more sugar.

The excess sugar consumed will eventually be converted to fat, which is counter-productive when you are trying to lose body fat.

Try sparkling mineral water with a squeeze of lime or fresh strawberries and instead of a mega-latte-mocha-tastic coffee, try an Americano with a splash of milk.

6. Prioritise sleep

Sleep is the time that your body rests and repairs, allowing your muscles to grow and recover.

A 2010 study by the University of Chicago found that when those on a diet got a full nights sleep, more than half the weight they lost was fat.

When they cut back on sleep, not only did this reduce the amount of fat loss to only one quarter, but they also reported feeling hungrier.

Without adequate rest, your satiation and hunger hormones, leptin and ghrelin, will be out of kilter. This can encourage cravings, in particular for sweet foods.

7. Do more low intensity cardio

Aerobic exercise requires fat as a primary fuel, so incorporating more aerobic activity into your daily routine will help to lose body fat.

Low intensity activities such as walking, cycling and running at a steady pace and done for at least 30 minutes at a time, can encourage your body into its fat-burning zone, so it can access the fat stores for a more efficient fuel source.

Shorter high intensity bursts will instead use glycogen stores in muscle instead of fat stores but this will increase your fitness so make sure you incorporate a little into your exercise line up.

8. Build weight training into your life

Speaking of having a varied exercise routine, building weight training whether that is actually lifting or doing programmes of light weights, resistance bands or body weight training will help your body burn fat.

The reason for that is lean muscle mass needs more calories to survive than fat does because lean muscle is so metabolically active.

In real terms, that means that a body high in lean muscle will burn more fat even at rest than someone with more fat on their bodies.

This is the annoying reason that sporty, athletic friend of yours seems to lose weight or stay the same when she goes on holiday and stops exercising.

Lean muscle has turned her body into a fat burning machine so that even when she lets go a little on holidays and stops working out, she still cant put on weight. That could be you.

Intermittent fasting is Google’s top 2019 diet searchwhat it is and the billionaires and celebs who swear by it – CNBC

Posted: December 16, 2019 at 12:55 am

Everyone from Silicon Valley executives likeTwitter CEO Jack Dorsey to Hollywood stars like Jennifer Aniston talked about "intermittent fasting" this year. Given the diet's popularity among high-profile individuals, it's no surprise that "intermittent fasting" was the top-trending diet search in Google in 2019, according to Google Trends data.

So what exactly is intermittent fasting and what is it supposed to do?

The eating method involves eating meals within a specific time frame and fasting for another period, according to the National Institute of Health.

Some people choose to restrict their meals to several hours during the day, for instance, eating normally from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (eight hours) and then having nothing but water, coffee or plain tea for the other 16 hours.

Another method of intermittent fasting entails alternating full days of fasting and full days of eating normally.

The so-called benefits of intermittent fasting are plenty. Some studies suggest that intermittent fasting could lead to weight loss, slow the effects of aging and even improve your cardiovascular health. But so far, these studies have been limited to mice or very small groups of people, so it's too soon to say whether it works in humans and whether the protocol would be safe for people to use outside of a lab and for thelong-term.

As for the claims that intermittent fasting helps your brain perform? More mice studies suggest that intermittent fasting could improve cognition and even have a protective effect on the brain against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. However, experiencing hunger during fasting periods could significantly impact your ability to make decisions, think and concentrate.

Weight loss is another big draw. However, a 2018 study found that people who intermittent fasted for 50 weeks lost about the same amount of weight as those who followed a traditional diet that restricted their calories.

Ultimately, while intermittent fasting might be trendy and sound promising right now, it's not for everyone. It's not clear whether intermittent fasting is sustainable to follow long-term, or if it's safe for people above age 60 or those who take diabetes medications, according to the Mayo Clinic. Intermittent fasting could put people at risk of developing nutrient deficiencies, for example. For some who have a history of disordered eating, intermittent fasting could lead to increased binge-eating, or harm their relationship to food.

Even though the research on intermittent fasting is hazy, that hasn't stopped big names from adopting their own intermittent fasting routines.

Twitter and Square CEO Dorsey, for example, fasts all day and only eats dinner between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. He claims that he's able to focus better when he's not being interrupted to eat, he told Ben Greenfield on his Ben Greenfield Fitness: Diet, Fat Loss and Performance podcast in April. On the weekends, Dorsey said that he'll go from Friday evening to Sunday evening without eating.

It's an extreme example (experts cautionagainst extreme fasts and fasting longer than 24 hours) for which Dorsey has been criticized. But he told Greenfield it helped him achieve "a new dimension."

"I just found that I got so much more done during those fasting periods because I was so focused and it just felt like I had much more time to really think and to work in that moment," Dorsey said.

Actor Jennifer Aniston does a 16:8 intermittent fasting protocol, which means she eats for an eight-hour window during the day. She told RadioTimes.com in October that she wakes up at at 8:30 a.m or 9 a.m. and doesn't eat all morning.

"I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours," she said.

Kourtney Kardashian has also experimented with intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet, another hugely popular low-carb high-fat diet, a few years ago.

"I wouldn't eat past 7 p.m. at night, and then I would wait to eat the next day until after my morning workout, which would be around 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m," she recalled on her website Poosh. Once a week, she would fast for 24 hours and only drink bone broth, water, and green tea.

Actor and fitness aficionado Chris Hemsworth told Men's Health UK in January that he only eats between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.

"I've found that it dramatically increased my energy levels," he said. "I've found that once you get over the initial shock in the first week or two of not eating [as regularly], your body kicks into a different state."

What Was Lost in the Last Good War – The New York Times

Posted: December 16, 2019 at 12:55 am

Morey Moseson didnt know what he wanted to be when he grew up. Not for lack of options the world seemed impossibly full. He was the class valedictorian, and the class clown. He loved to dance to Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. His sister, Lee, two years older, taught him how to do the Lindy hop. Theyd practice the eight-count step late at night, big band swing notes at 78 r.p.m. filling the rooms of their home in Jamaica, Queens.

When Moreys parents wanted to conceal a conversation from their prying kids, they spoke Yiddish. Ever resourceful, their son took up German to help him interpret the adult exchanges. His linguistic training proved prescient. When he turned 18, in 1944, he joined the legions of young American men serving the war effort, as a translator for the 318th Infantry Regiment.

One summer my father came across a vinyl that Morey, my great-uncle, recorded with his mother, father and sister in a Midtown Manhattan studio, just after his training at Fort McClellan and before he shipped out to Europe.

Youve grown a lot in the last few months, said his mother, Florence, to her 5-foot-10, 170-pound son. Maybe youll help do the yard when you get home.

The warll be over in just a few months, Morey replied. His voice was buoyant, assured of sanctity of mission and certainty of success. Then you can put me on the payroll again, but I want more than 50 cents an hour.

It was the fall of 1944, and it was true that the war was nearly over. The American troops were about to see their last great battle in the last good war. The Battle of the Bulge was Adolf Hitlers final offensive. It was an ill-fated attempt to split the American, British and French forces pushing toward Germany, named for the bulge that the Germans created 60 miles into allied territory. It lasted six frigid weeks across the densely wooded Ardennes Forest. And it started 75 years ago this week.

Winston Churchill called it undoubtedly the greatest American battle of World War II. My mental images of the war front are gray and grave shaped by Saving Private Ryan and Dunkirk but Moreys letters home are mostly gossip, jokes and jabs at his sister, Lee, who became my grandmother. You cant forget that hes 18, his dispatches home written like those of a college freshman.

The youthfulness in his letters and the epic proportions of the battle feel almost impossible to square. I found myself reading them like a code-cracker. It wasnt his terminology that was hard to decipher, though I tripped over dollink for darling. Nor was it his elegant longhand, the work of someone raised on pen and paper. What I puzzled over was the tone. Brimming with optimism, he told his family of fun nights spent with the boys in his battalion. Had a riotous time, he said. And to his sister, What exactly did you mean by that remark at the end of one letter, and be good?

World War II stories have always seemed to me heavy with all the cultural and moral weight we attach to them its the good war, as Studs Terkel cites in his oral history. Its the end of tyranny.

To Morey, though, World War II was also fast friendships, spats with fellow troops and sometimes missing home. Since you asked for it by telling me how nice I was to paint a rosy picture for the parents, Ill unload my woes on you, he wrote to Lee, after his closest friends were transferred out of his division. Every time I see a movie or hear some music (youd be surprised how rarely I do hear music, much less listen to radio) I get kinda lonesome and a bit homesick, but that wouldnt bother me if I had someone to pal around with.

On Feb. 15, the fighting mostly over, German troops clearing out a village fired an artillery shell that hit Morey right in the head. He died instantly, three days short of turning 19. Theres a Valentines Day card for his mother, Florence, in the letter box, dated one day before he was killed. Covered in smiling stick figure cartoons, it reads, Gee mom, youre swell!

Moreys parents were too devastated to handle the sight of their sons body, so they had him buried in a military cemetery in Luxembourg. My family traveled there 15 years ago. Amid a sea of 5,000 white crosses, there were 118 Stars of David marking Jewish graves. Moreys was the only star without any ritual mourners stones on top, because no one had ever been able to visit.

I wasnt raised in a generation close to World War II. I grew up among millennials attached to irony and air quotes when we said things like patriot, the eye roll was implied. But when I think about wandering those long cemetery rows, I feel something between pride and an ache for the loss of boys, younger than I am now, who blinked back their fears and wrote corny letters home. They seemed to serve their country without complication, simply because they knew it was right.

Of course, wartime images are always softer in their sepia tone. If you look hard enough, the complication is there. Toward the bottom of the letter box, I found a note from my grandmother Lees new boyfriend, Arthur, who was soon to be her husband. He told Morey that as a socially conscious person he believed in the war effort, but that he had misgivings about the violence.

I wonder whether what I believe in is what Im supporting, Arthur wrote.

His note is full of plans for the future, excitement about meeting his girlfriends kid brother after the war. Theres a bit about politics, but mostly its about family and new love. It is postmarked Feb. 19, four days after Morey died.

Why the Unconventional Keto Diet Works (and How You Can Adhere to It) – Influencive

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:46 am

At any given time, 45 million Americans are dieting and each year, they spend roughly $33 billion on their diet. Yet a majority of diets actually fail within just a month! Fact is, most people dont want to give up their favorite foods and many of us struggle to rein in our portions.

Portions and palette help explain why the keto diet has become so popular. While most diets have you cutting out high-fat foods, including meat, butter, and cheese, the keto diet and other low carb diets allow you to continue to eat your favorite fatty foods, so long as you keep the carbs low.

Large amounts of carbs are found in bread, pasta, and some fruits and vegetables. However, theres nary a carb in a steak and other meats. For many dieters, its easier to give up the bun rather than the burger. Still, many people on low-carb diets often succumb to their urges as well. For those who can stick with it, the keto diet offers many benefits.

The body can only store about 2,000 kcal in glycogen stores. When your body goes into ketosis, it switches from burning glycogen stores to burning fat. This can lead to more consistent energy levels and focus, which in turn could have a big impact on your career and personal relationships.

Martina Slajerova found herself struggling to stick to the keto diet when she decided to build an app to keep people on track. When Slajerova started her own keto journey, it wasnt just about losing weight. Slajerova suffers from Hashimotos disease, an autoimmune disease that affects her thyroid. She was putting on weight and struggling to maintain healthy energy levels.

Ditching her traditional vegetable and low-calorie diet for Ketos, Slajerova quickly found her energy levels restored and her weight dropping. There was just one problem: even in spite of all of the health benefits, she struggled to stick with the diet. As Slajerova educated herself on the Keto diet, she quickly found that more foods were low-carb than she initially realized and that with careful planning she could enjoy a diverse, tasty diet.

However, Slajerova also knows how difficult it is to keep count of carbs and to identify low-carb foods. This is especially true for beginners. Thats why she set out to create an app that would help people stay true to the keto diet. Besides counting carbs, the app makes it easy for people to identify low carb foods and find keto-friendly recipes. You can also track your weight and other metrics.

Besides keeping carbs in check, many people on the keto diet struggle to get enough electrolytes. As a result, they may suffer from cramps, muscle weakness, and other issues. In fact, Slajerova believes that electrolyte imbalances are the chief reason people give up on the keto diet as it can make people feel sluggish. This condition is so common, theres even a term for it: keto flu, but its usually temporary and will clear up in just a few weeks.

However, by carefully tracking and ensuring that youre getting enough electrolytes, you should be able to maintain higher energy levels. In fact, after your body switches into ketosis, burning fat for energy, you will enjoy increased energy levels and focus which will have a positive effect on your professional and personal lives.

Protein is also something to watch out for. If you dont get enough protein it could lead to muscle loss and other issues. On the other hand, eating sufficient protein will help curb your appetite. In fact, many keto dieters only eat one or two meals a day. They arent skipping meals, per se, but only eat when they are hungry.

At the end of the day, careful planning and knowledge can help dieters succeed. Of course, not everyone has the time to become a keto expert. Fortunately, theres an app for all that- the Keto Diet App. And if you do stick to the keto diet, you could reap some serious benefits.

So while the keto diet may seem unconventional, for many people it could be life-changing. And while sticking to any diet is hard, thanks to the efforts of Slajerova and other experts, the keto diet has never been easier.

Econometer: Will a bad advertisement really hurt companies like Peloton? – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Posted: December 15, 2019 at 10:46 am

Fitness equipment maker Peloton was mocked throughout social media recently for an advertisement featuring a woman receiving a Peloton bike for Christmas from her husband.

Critics said the woman was already skinny and didnt need the bike, and it would be insulting to get a gift from a spouse suggesting they lose weight. A lot of companies have faced backlash for ads in the past few years Nike, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble but a Wall Street Journal article noted it did little to change stock prices.

Q: Do companies need to worry about social media backlash to advertisements?

Bob Rauch, R.A. Rauch & Associates

YES: Companies should always worry about backlash if they do something that is highly controversial. As for Peloton, Im not sure why they would have had any backlash over the ad in question because the product is for fitness. However, I certainly understand why Nike had some backlash re: Colin Kaepernick. We are in a social media-driven environment and need to use caution with our messaging or risk paying a price.

Norm Miller, University of San Diego

YES: The power of social media and explosive viral herd-like transmissions, sometimes informed and sometimes not, cannot be overestimated. Weve seen several firms quickly pull ads when recognizing a misinterpretation or unexpected reaction. Social media can also spot the YouTube video of a man on disability payments at the ski resort or the woman on sick leave at the beach, so we should all assume big brother is listening or watching and keeping us all in check.

Jamie Moraga, IntelliSolutions

NO: Depending on what it is, usually, its a short-term hit or miss. We have seen companies like Nike take controversy in advertising or by recalling shoes and make it work for them. Whether intentional or not, Peloton released an ad that made waves in the social media world. This has now led to millions of views of the ad that may not have happened should the controversy not occurred. Sales will determine if the backlash had any long-term impact to Peloton. In the end, this too shall pass, and the public will be onto the next thing.

Lynn Reaser, Point Loma Nazarene University

YES: While anecdotal evidence suggests that stock prices may briefly suffer from negative feedback, there also appears to be little lasting effect of ads positively received. Stock prices are affected by a multitude of forces, including interest rates, trade talks, and economic activity. If companies social media has no effect on their sales and profitability, why are they spending $84 billion this year worldwide? A companys brand is its most important asset and that asset must be carefully safeguarded.

Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health

YES: I suppose worrying about backlash would depend on the sensitivity of the issue. Having said that, its always important for companies to think through what reactions they may get to their advertisements. A little research and testing upfront go a long way. Because of social media, the voice of the consumer is much more magnified today than it used to be. How a company responds to a backlash can be just as important to consumers as the initial messaging.

Kelly Cunningham, San Diego Institute for Economic Research

YES: It is a calculated risk. In continual quest for attention, staking a position through advertising may have both positive and negative consequences. This can work in the advertisers favor. Controversy and heightened perception generate greater top-of-mind awareness for whatever reason. So long as the highly valued target market demographic connects and reacts positively brand loyalty is promoted and enhanced, despite those who may react negatively and likely not buy the product in any case.

Gary London, London Moeder Advisors

NO: Edgy is almost always good. Even negative publicity usually translates into sales. I am thinking about Colin Kaepernicks ad with Nike earlier this year. As for Peloton, the inference that biking is for weight loss is a little narrow-minded. Exercise is for health. If you want to lose weight, you should eat and drink less, and better. The actor Monica Ruiz probably shouldnt be drinking all of that Aviation Gin if she really wants to maintain her ideal weight.

Austin Neudecker, Rev

YES: Today, everything inevitably receives numerous social media responses, good and bad. Companies should be cognizant of the social zeitgeist and attempt to be inclusive and respectful to their audience. While it is impossible to satisfy all consumers, companies can easily test messaging and anticipate likely responses. Likewise, as social media consumers, we should be forgiving to companies that make truly unintended mistakes, especially if they take action to correct the mistake.

James Hamilton, UC San Diego

NO: Theres an old adage that claims, theres no such thing as bad publicity. Its not always true. But Peloton got a lot of people talking about their product, and thats a key goal of any advertising campaign. Some people may even be attracted by the controversy, thinking that while others are offended, I do as I please. The Betsy Ross kerfuffle ended up working to Nikes advantage, and the Peloton ad could turn out the same way.

David Ely, San Diego State University

YES: A social media backlash to an advertisement can result in lost sales, a lower stock price, and a drop in employee morale. The successful execution of mitigating strategies may limit the negative impact to the short term. But even this outcome will require that the company spends time and resources developing their response. It is much better to thoughtfully consider potential public reactions to advertisements before they are released than to control damage afterwards.

Phil Blair, Manpower

YES: Any advertisement by any company that is rude or offensive to any group of clients is wrong and downright stupid. But lets remember with the advent of social media it is very easy for anyone to complain about anything and they will. But this should not encourage advertising campaigns to be so milquetoast that they dont accomplish their goals of being part informational and part entertaining. Offensive people who unreasonably criticize and complain should be ignored and left in their little negative world.

Alan Gin, University of San Diego

YES: Companies have always had to consider public reaction to their actions, including their advertisements. Companies have sometimes been adversely affected, including having their sales affected, having their stock price decline, to simply having their image tarnished. Social media is just the latest venue in which that reaction can take place. Given its popularity among the more coveted demographic groups from a business point of view, companies should definitely be concerned about reactions on social media.
