Following a Cardio Plan for Weight Loss – dummies

If your goal is permanent fat loss, you need to burn enough calories to make a significant impact. Heres why: In order to lose a pound in one week, you need to create a 3,500-calorie deficit; in other words, you need to burn off 3,500 more calories than you eat. A 30-minute power walk on flat ground burns about 120 calories. So, to burn off 1 pound of fat by walking, youd have to hoof it for more than 2 hours a day.
Dont worry no one should suggest that you exercise two hours every day! The best way to lose fat is to create a calorie deficit by burning calories through exercise and cutting calories you eat.
For example, over the course of a week, you may cut 250 calories per day by switching from mayo to mustard on your sandwich at lunch and snacking on light yogurt instead of Fruit-on-the-Bottom. Meanwhile, you could burn an extra 250 calories a day by taking a one-hour walk or a half-hour jog.
Cardio exercise is only one part of a weight-loss plan. You also need to revamp your eating habits and embark on a weight-training program. Also, keep in mind that losing weight is not as easy as it sounds on TV diet commercials. It takes a lot more commitment than just drinking that delicious shake for breakfast. And it takes time.
Dont try to lose more than 1/2 pound to 1 pound each week, and dont eat fewer than 1,200 calories per day (preferably more). On a super-low-calorie diet, you deprive your body of essential nutrients, and you have a tougher time keeping the weight off because your metabolism slows down. Realize, too, that genetics plays a large role in weight loss. Its easier for some people to lose weight than it is for others.
Here are some general cardio guidelines for weight loss. Consult a registered dietitian and certified fitness trainer to come up with a plan best suited to your specific goals and schedule.
Heres the cold, hard truth: You probably need to do five or six workouts a week.
Heres another dose of reality: You should aim for at least 45 minutes of exercise, a mix of cardio and strength training, six days per week. Again, you dont need to do all this sweating at once, but for the pounds to come off, the calories you burn need to add up.
To make a serious dent in your fat-loss program, work out in your target zone most of the time. But keep in mind: If youre pretty darned deconditioned, as the politically correct like to say, even exercising at 50 percent of your maximum heart rate can help build up your fitness level.
You may have heard that exercising at a slow pace is more effective for weight loss than working out more intensely. In fact, many cardio machines have fat burning programs that keep you at a slow pace. But this is misleading. As it turns out, the concept of a fat-burning zone is no more real than the Twilight Zone.
During low-intensity aerobic exercise, your body does use fat as its primary fuel source. As you get closer to your breaking point, your body starts using a smaller percentage of fat and a larger percentage of carbohydrates, another fuel source. However, picking up the pace allows you to burn more total calories, as well as more fat calories.
Heres how: If you go in-line skating for 30 minutes at a leisurely roll, you might burn about 100 calories about 80 percent of them from fat (so thats 80 fat calories). But if you spend the same amount of time skating with a vengeance over a hilly course, you might burn 300 calories 30 percent of them from fat (thats 90 fat calories).
So at the fast pace, you burn more than double the calories and 10 more fat calories.
Of course, going faster and harder is not always better. If youre just starting out, you probably cant sustain a faster pace long enough to make it worth your while. If you go slower, you may be able to exercise a lot longer, so youll end up burning more calories and fat that way.
Maximize your workout and burn over 1,000 calories per hour! Thats a claim you may see in advertisements for treadmills, stair-climbers, and other cardio machines. And its true. You can burn 1,000 calories per hour doing those activities if you crank up the machine to the highest level and if you happen to have bionic legs.
If youre a beginner, youll last about 30 seconds at that pace, at which point you will have burned 8.3 calories, and the paramedics will be scooping you off the floor and hauling your wilted body away on a stretcher.
Theres a better approach to calorie burning: Choose an activity that you can sustain for a good while say, at least 10 or 15 minutes. Sure, running burns more calories than walking, but if running wipes you out after a half mile or bothers your knees, youre better off walking.
The following table gives calorie estimates for a number of popular aerobic activities. The number of calories you actually burn depends on the intensity of your workout, your weight, your muscle mass, and your metabolism.
In general, a beginner is capable of burning 4 or 5 calories per minute of exercise, while a very fit person can burn 10 to 12 calories per minute.
The table includes a few stop-and-go sports such as tennis and basketball. Activities like these are not aerobic in the truest sense, but they can still give you a great workout and contribute to good health and weight loss. The numbers in this chart apply to a 150-pound person. (If you weigh less, youll burn a little less; if you weigh more, youll burn a little more.)

True to form, Jennifer shares more than a few hilarious clips as she shuffled her way to recovery in her glamorous home. The RHONJ beauty looked gorgeous makeup-free as she made her way to her in-home elevator (which she has never taken until now) to head upstairs and rest. "Day two! It's not so bad! Dr. Aydin is going to put me in the elevator," she says as she clutches her husband with each step, "cuz you know we bougie!"
Somehow, Jennifer is able to make even this painful moment so refreshingly funny. Her commitment to keeping it real is even evident in her caption. On Thursday, many Americans will sit down to a meal that could be a whopping 3,000 calories. While just one bad day of eating might not lead to weight gain, Thanksgiving marks the start of an often overindulgent holiday season.
But, putting on weight over the holidays doesnt have to be inevitable. These five weight loss all-stars have shed a combined total of 626 pounds and have been maintaining their losses. They share advice on how they enjoy beloved holiday foods without gaining weight or creating bad habits.
I always tell everyone it is a holiday not a holaweek or a holamonth, Erica Lugo told TODAY. Lugo lost 160 pounds and is a new trainer on the upcoming season of USA's "The Biggest Loser." For one day I can enjoy myself and not go crazy.
Too often, people give themselves permission to overeat starting at Thanksgiving and continuing at every office potluck, lunch out, Friendsgiving, gift exchange and family gatherings.
It's often not just one day for many of us, Dr. Kevin Gendreau, told TODAY via email. The family medicine doctor is maintaining his 125 pound weight loss. Before you know it, youre eating unhealthy foods three to four times per week and youre back into your fat jeans by the New Year.
Often people skip eating on holidays rationalizing that theyll save their calories for the big meal. But that often causes hungry people to consume loads of calories.
People think OK I am going to save all my calories for one meal and what happens is that just triggers a binge. You just have this mentally where it is 'All right, game on,' Lugo said. You cant skip a meal.
Gendreau said he often eats a healthy snack, such as nuts, prior to leaving the house so he isnt ravenous.
Snack on a handful of almonds, an apple, scrambled eggs, a cup of carrots, snap peas and hummus or green tea and don't forget a big glass of water, he explained. Fill up on something healthy so theres less room for the garbage.

After losing 124 pounds, Justine McCabe remembers holidays where she restricted her calories so much that she barely enjoyed anything and, she remembers holidays when she ate so much she felt sick for days. Thats why she tries to be mindful.
Be intentional with your eating, McCabe told TODAY. Dont use the holidays as a cheat time.
Gendreau agrees. He finds that while watching football or hanging out, he might snack even though he isnt hungry.
Dont let boredom lead to weight gain," he said. "Slow, mindful eating is key."
Lugo often participates in a turkey trot or other holiday exercise activity prior to Thanksgiving dinner. Hannah Lester, who lost 112 pounds, doesnt make any changes to her exercise routine, but keeps up her good habits.
I just try to stay consistent, Lester told TODAY via email. I dont want to slack off during the holiday season.
Gendreau does the same he sticks with high-intensity interval training throughout the holiday season.
Lugo also includes family exercise, such as walks or flag football, after dinner.
Just because it is a holiday doesnt mean you have to stop all activities, she said.
Lugo has noticed that when she feels stressed or overly tired, her willpower isnt as strong. Shes more likely to snack or overeat.
Control your stress levels," she explained. "The higher your stress, the more that your body signals your brain to want to eat. Go to yoga. Breathe a couple of times."
Lester has a hard time passing up her moms shortbread cookies and Chex Mix. So she doesnt.
Its all about portion control," she said. "Instead of three cookies, I just eat one."
Lugo agrees. She loves sweets and enjoys a small piece of pie and a cookie. Janielle Wright, who lost 105 pounds, finds that small portions help her maintain her weight.
I know that too much of anything isnt good, so Ill have the foods I love in moderation," she told TODAY via email. "Thats definitely key."
On holidays, its easy to heap food onto a huge plate and eat all of it. But Lugo found an easy solution.
If I am handed a huge plate, I am going to fill that whole plate, she said. When I pick a smaller plate my portions tend to be way smaller.
Wright also uses the smaller plate approach and says she never eats anything without portioning it out first.
I put out everything in a small plate, never eat straight out of a package," she said. "When the plate is empty I stop."

Whats the most difficult part of being overweight? There came a point when I wasnt able to wear the desired clothes of my choice as my size was increasing with every passing day. It became really difficult to get clothes which fit me. As a result, I had to compromise on what I wore.
What shape do you see yourself 10 years down the line? I want to become the best version of myself, both physically and mentally.

The fitted wrap dress, designed by contemporary plus-sized label Eloquii, featured a low cut plunge, to-the-elbow sleeves and a cheeky slit. Rebel completed her stylish look with a throwback pair of cat-eye glasses by Dita, a half ponytail and a Kylie Jenner approved nude matte lipstick! Rebel was reportedly on the set of her new Australian seriesPooch Perfect, which is a competitive dog styling show! In the competition, 10 pro dog stylists compete in a variety of challenges for a $10,000 prize which is awarded by a panel, similar to the judges onAmerican Idol or Dancing with the Stars.
In addition to the new show, Rebel recently announced that she will also be writing and producing a new K-Pop comedy calledSeoul Girls. I guess the secrets out about Seoul Girls! she shared on Instagram.
[Ive] been working really hard on this behind the scenes with the first movie I wrote, I really wanted it to star a diverse range of actors, so really proud about putting this together with an amazing team. My name is Sajid Ali. I am 32 years old, 178cm tall and from Pakistan. I came to UAE in October 2006.
I used to be a glut of sorts, never letting any delicacy pass me by. I was particularly fond of sugary drinks and chocolate. I was averse to games and sports except when lying in the comfort of a sofa, watching cricket while munching on crisps and sipping on soda.
My weight hit 108kg on the scale and so began a disturbing chapter in my life. I lost self-esteem when friends and even family started calling me names. I slowly withdrew from social circles and on the few occasions that I ventured out to shop, I would longingly stare at the slim shirts on display before settling on my size, XXL. I felt like everyone was staring at me.
Tired of all the negative feedback, I made a resolution to lose the weight. This was back in 2017. This was my turning point.
I tried enrolling in a gym right away but faced financial constraints. So I started daily walks and jogging. I would walk 4km from Hor Al Anz to Mamzar Beach in Dubai and vice-versa. At the beach, I would run another 4km. This would take me two hours.
Reducing my daily meal intake proved to be the biggest challenge despite my overwhelming desire and drive. There was a time when my friends invited me to a party and I had to say no. I had to say no to delicious food that was in front of me. It was difficult. (The lessons have stayed with me though; even today I am off sugar and allow myself a cheat meal once a month.)
I still remember the time I almost gave up. It was during my first month; I stopped and cried. Nineteen days into the fitness plan, I thought I would never see the results I was dreaming about; I was killing myself and had a very hard time exercising without a trainer. For the moment, I couldnt see results. Fortunately a few days on, a visit to a mall and a look at the mirror provided me with the encouragement I needed. I headed back to the beach.
Five months later, I participated in the Desert Warrior challenge, completing an 8km run in 48min.
My persistence paid astonishing dividends. I shed 44kg in just 4 months.
I later managed to join a gym located in Deira, Dubai, in August 2017 after my finances improved. I wanted a trim body and was determined to achieve it.
The first phase of the gym was obviously tough. When I initially talked to people about gaining a sculpted body, people were laughing in jest, but I couldnt care less. My goal was set. Within two months, I acquired my desired shape. I never hired a trainer, but I did some weight lifting on my own.
Today, I weigh 68kg. (I put on about 4kg of muscle since I dropped the kilos).I wear small to medium T-shirts. My waist has gone from a size 42 to a size 30. The exercise helped not only with stamina and fitness but also to deal with any fallout such as loose skin that weight loss may have brought.
People still stare at mebut now its in awe.
My family and friends have now given me new nicknames. Its all just as I hoped.
