Couple shed more than eight stone after eating tons of takeaways piled on the pounds – Derbyshire Live

Posted: November 24, 2019 at 4:42 pm

Bingeing on takeaways and a daily visit to the cob van led to a husband and wife piling on the pounds.

But now the couple are in seventh heaven after ditching fast food and shedding an impressive eight stones between them.

Dawn and Mark Smith weighed in at almost 50 stone between them but ditching the junk food has certainly paid dividends.

Dawn, 29, from Ashby, has told how she was always overweight but she became tired of seeing her 'Winnie the Pooh' belly. She used to tip the scales at 20 stone, she said.

While husband Mark weighed in at almost 30 stone and the pair decided it was time to change and they went on a diet together.

Dawn, who is mum to Cynthia, seven, and Isabelle, five, said: "I was always the fat kid at school. I have always been active and on the go but I just ate the wrong foods.

"McDonald's and Chinese food are my favourites and I was always popping into Greggs on the playgroup run."

Dawn said her mum used to poke fun at her 'Winnie the Pooh belly' and she became embarrassed when the woman who runs the 'cob van' knew her order every day.

The mum said: "Shortbread is my real downfall but we would also snack on chocolate and crisps, sitting on the settee binging on them every night.

"We would eat takeaways every night and between Mark and myself could get through at least half a loaf of bread at breakfast - just the two of us.

"It was getting ridiculous.

"In fact, it was so bad that the cob van lady always knew my order.

"I was living in leggings and T-shirts. It was just getting embarrassing.

Mark, 37, weighed in at almost 30 stone, and had diabetes and other health issues.

Said Dawn: "We just sat down and talked about our weight. We needed to be around for our girls."

After being inspired by Dawns mums incredible 10-stone weight loss, the couple joined her at the Woodville Slimming World group in January 2019 and saw results straight away.

Dawn said: "I had tried Slimming World before and it worked but I stopped going and piled the weight back on again.

"I told myself that I will stick this out and I am not going to give in like I normally do.

"Luckily I saw results straight away. In the first week I lost 9lbs and my clothes started feeling looser.

"I felt good and it really spurred me on.

"We used to be so negative and we were our own worst enemies because we had no motivation.

"Now we are so proud of each other."

Since joining the group Dawn, who was a size 26 to 28 and tipped the scales at 20 stone and half a pound, and dropped five dress sizes and weighed around 16 stone 7.5lb.

An incredible transformation in 33 weeks.

Mark was 29 stone 10lbsand wearing XXXXXXL clothes when they joined the group and now weighs 24 Stone 9.5 lbs and is now in XXXL clothing.

The pairs weight loss has shocked lots of people, and many have commented on Dawns new figure.

She said: "My friends and family are all surprised at the difference in me but really proud.

"I cannot believe how much of a reaction I have been getting since losing the weight.

"I have had strangers coming up to me in the street saying 'I have seen you around and I cant believe you have lost so much weight. You look great'.

"I am so proud of Mark, and the girls are always excited to see if we have bought any certificates back.

"It just shows that if I can do it, I believe anyone can.

"I used to have anxiety and panic attacks but now I sit up in the group and I give out advice.

"I won woman of the year 2019 and together we won Slimming World couple of the year for 2019.

"I feel so much better, so much healthier since losing weight."

The couple, who run their own company, MD Smiths LTD (Electrical Contractors), are already making big plans for the future.

Dawn said: "The only time I have gained weight in 33 weeks is when I went on holiday to Greece.

"I am tall so I want to lose another three stone and Mark wants to lose a total of 10 stone this year.

"I am going to be 30 in March and I really want to have a big party and wear a nice dress and impress.

"I want people to say 'oh my god' and be shocked at how I look. I cant wait."

Are you wondering if you are the only one who feels like eating snacks all the time? Absolutely not! Everyone, including fitness experts, lovesto snack! People snack whenever an appetizing food is around, even when theyre really not hungry.

Why do we snack?

When you go a long time without eating, you might get hungry and you will end up consuming a lot more calories than what you actually need. Snacking can help you keep your hunger levels even, particularly on those days when your meals are spaced further apart. One study has reported that when a particular group of neurons in your brain senses low energy levels, we tend to eat voraciously. It also explains why dieting is so hard-the unpleasant sensation arising from a persistent hunger drive.

However, it is important to make healthy choices when it comes to snacking. One research has found that snacking between meals does not affect weight and another study indicated that eating a protein-rich, high-fiber snack can aid weight loss. Here is a list of healthy snacks options that makes weight loss easy:

1. Almonds- Nuts are not only nutritious but also a delicious snack option. They are loaded with proteins, healthy fats and fiber. Posted: November 23, 2019 at 7:47 am

Imagine not being able to fit into the clothes of your choice, owing to your rapidly growing waistline. While battling extra kilos in itself is a difficult task, it is even more difficult for new mothers who are trying hard to come to terms with the sea of changes in their body. When 35-year-old Pooja Pandit saw her weight after giving birth to her daughter, she realised it was time to take control of her life. With enormous support from her husband and sister, she managed to lose a whopping 30 kilos. Here is how she did it: Name: Pooja PanditAge: 35 years

Occupation: Assistant ManagerHeight: 5 feet 5 inches

Current Weight: 62 kgs

Highest weight recorded: 92 kgs

Weight lost: 30 kgs

Duration it took me to lose weight: Less than 5 months

The turning point: I weighed 92 kilos on the day I was going to deliver my baby girl. Post-delivery, I expected to lose at least 6 to 7 kilos, but the weighing scale still showed 89 kilos. I was really disappointed.

As a result, I had to order a new pair of jeans and dresses as I was no longer able to fit into my old clothes. That was the point my husband, who is a fitness freak, gently nudged me to start disciplining my diet and do some basic work out. I did not want to touch 100 kilos, so I decided to follow his lead.

My breakfast: I keep switching between umpa, dosa chutney, oats porridge, rawa dosa, poha, paneer chunks (170 grams), and idli.

My lunch:1 chapati, 1 bowl of dal and a portion of vegetables

My dinner: 1 chapati, 1 bowl of dal and a portion of vegetables. I also switch between two pieces of fish and chicken, a bowl of rice and dal

I indulge in: I love exploring a variety of food options and do not believe in completely abandoning any food group. Hence, I make it a point to stay balanced when it comes to cheat days. My workout: Since I am not someone who likes going to the gym, I make it a point to do brisk walking for 6 to 8 kilometres and swimming for an hour daily.

Fitness secrets I unveiled: Your diet plays a MAJOR role in your weight loss. You also need to be patient and understand that there is no shortcut to weight loss.

I indulge in: I reserve my cheat days only for certain occasions. I also make it a point to work out hard extra if I feel that I am deviating from my journey. What are the lifestyle changes you made? I made it a point to keep a check on all the calorie intake. I stopped eating and drinking anything which had a lot of sugar in it. This included chocolates, fried food items and aerated drinks. How do you ensure you dont lose focus? My husband Vinayak played a crucial role in my weight loss journey. He helped me stay focused and consistent.

DR. ROACH | TB symptoms include cough, fever and weight loss – St. Augustine Record

Dr. Keith Roach To Your Good Health

Dear Dr. Roach: In 2006, I was working at a long-term-health care center, and we had annual tuberculosis screenings. That year, I tested positive and was prescribed six months of isoniazid. I was told by my doctor at the time to get a chest X-ray every three years and not to participate in any future TB screenings.

Dear Dr. Roach: In 2006, I was working at a long-term-health care center, and we had annual tuberculosis screenings. That year, I tested positive and was prescribed six months of isoniazid. I was told by my doctor at the time to get a chest X-ray every three years and not to participate in any future TB screenings.

In 2007 I moved and have not worked in health care since. I'm getting conflicting information from new doctors on whether I need chest X-rays at any point. Overall, I am in good health. What is my appropriate follow-up? S.B.

Answer: The expert consensus is that as long as you feel well, you do not need any further screening tests. However, you are still at risk for developing active tuberculosis despite having been treated with the isoniazid.

Symptoms include cough, fever and weight loss. Any of these symptoms, if unexplained by something like a cold, should prompt you to see your doctor and you should ask about getting a chest X-ray. Fortunately, the risk of developing tuberculosis is very low now, perhaps 1% or 2% in your lifetime.

Different health care systems have their own rules about screening a person with a positive skin test for tuberculosis after treatment. However, studies have shown that regular chest X-rays are almost completely useless in a person with no symptoms.

Al Roker on Keeping Weight Off During the Holidays: ‘Every Day Is a Battle’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: November 23, 2019 at 7:47 am

Al Roker has done one of the most difficult things anyone can accomplish, and that is lose weight, keep it off, and do it all in public. The Today Show weatherman has lost over 100 pounds since his gastric bypass surgery in 2002.

Since then, Roker has kept the weight off, but not without an intentional daily effort. The holidays are no exception, with all the parties and get-togethers and their accompanying rich desserts, casseroles, cakes, and dinners.

Find out how the 65-year-old strategically deals with staying fit during the most delicious time of year, plus his favorite sweet potato casserole recipe. Everything in moderation!

Rokers presence at the New York City parade held every year on Thanksgiving Day is a tradition. He has helped to host the event since 1995 with hosts varying from former Today weatherman Willard Scott to Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, and now Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb.

Every year, its different in a sense, Roker told OnTV last week, whether its the weather or different balloons or different floats. Its still one of those things where you come to it and youre amazed that youre a part of peoples holiday and peoples tradition.

I grew up with this, and it never even entered my imagination that someday, I would be part of it.

While even the most vigilant fitness buff may take it easy during the holidays, Roker has learned he simply cant expect to slack off and maintain his weight loss. The Today star has developed some tips for enjoying himself during the holidays, while keeping control.

My strategy is I dont deprive myself, he told the New York Daily News in 2014. I have a spoonful of whatever it is I like and thats that. I just cant physically eat as much as I used to, sadly.

I feel good. You know, every day is a battle. You fight it every day. Its an addiction. Theres no secret its less food, more exercise.

Roker also shared his strategy when ordering in a restaurant that helps him watch his portions.

If we go to dinner I tell the waiter, Take whatever it is, cut it in half, put the other half in a doggie bag and put the other half on my plate.'

Yet, as disciplined as Roker is, he realizes that life is for enjoyment as well and makes certain to enjoy those holiday dishes that he has loved for years. Including his mothers sweet potato casserole.

He posted on the Today website last year about this beloved recipe.

I dont know where my mom came up with this recipe. Ive heard of many versions of it from the South, but my mom wasnt from the South! Somehow, though, it became a Thanksgiving staple for our family.

Are you hell-bent on fast weight loss? Your bedtime may take a hit – TheHealthSite

Posted: November 23, 2019 at 7:44 am

The benefits of being at a healthy weight are undeniable. There are studies that have shown that losing just 5 per cent of your excess body weight can support you in fighting off health conditions like heart diseases, diabetes and increase your lifespan. However, shedding off those extra kilos too quickly could lead to major health implications. Remember the old adage, slow but steady wins the race? Experts agree with this while it comes to weight loss. They are of the opinion that losing about 3 kilos every month is good enough.

However, the fad diet trends that are gaining popularity among the millennials promise apparently lucrative numbers on the weighing scale in a very short period of time. But they backfire. You get back all that you lose if you shed weight rapidly. Moreover, there are many side effects of quick weight loss. Here, we take you through the most common health consequences that you may face if your weight loss plan is aimed towards abnormally fast results.

This is a common side-effect of losing weight too quickly. Shedding those extra kilos too fast gives your skin very little time to adjust to this change. Your skin cannot pace up with your body when the weight loss process is very rapid. Make sure your exercise routine is backed by the right diet consisting of all nutrients. This will reduce the chance of a sagging skin.

What you eat has a direct impact on your sleep schedule. If your weight loss diet demands you to starve yourself, you will find it tough to doze off. The brain isnt able to process the hormones required for a sound sleep when your hunger hormones are on an overdrive. To get healthy sleep, you should load up on carbohydrates and protein as they up your tryptophan level. Tryptophan is an amino acid that promotes sleep. It is found in milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, fish, poultry and chocolate.

Fad diets may leave you impoverished for essential nutrients and enough calories. This may lead to malnourishment and hair loss. Without enough nutrients in the body, your hair follicles become weak causing hair fall and thinning. Adding sufficient amount of protein to your diet can help you avoid this situation. Protein is found in lean meat, poultry, fish, seeds and nuts.

Some weight loss diets rob you off the fibre that your body needs. Moreover, your body may find it difficult to adjust to dietary changes. All these are likely to lead to a problem in bowel movement. However, you can prevent this condition if you include foods like whole grains, salads, raw fruits and vegetables in your diet, along with lots of water.

Apart from sagging skin, poor nourishment of body could lead to other dermatological issues too. They include acne, wrinkles, dull skin and fine lines. To avoid these skin conditions, you should add foods that are rich in antioxidants as they provide protection from skin damage caused by sun, bacteria and even lack of nutrients. Onions and garlic are rich in antioxidants.

With A Rebrand And A New App, Will WW International Rebound In 2020? – The Motley Fool

Posted: November 23, 2019 at 7:44 am

Last week -- just in time for the holiday heavy-eating season -- Weight Watchers International(NASDAQ:WW) rolled out its new, customized weight management program called myWW.It's the earliest the company has ever launched a new program, according to CEO Mindy Grossman. The debut date is more than seven weeks before New Year's, when folks make resolutions that often include weight loss goals. The post-holiday diet season drives WW International's highest subscriber rates, which usually decline through the rest of the year. The myWW plan program matches members to one of three plans based on taste preferences, eating habits, and goals. Gary Foster, WW's chief scientific officer, says myWW took about two years to develop, and it builds on science and behavioral data.

Wall Street analysts say the program will be a key driver of future subscriber growth. Keybanc's Edward Yuma said myWW is "unique enough to feel new," but also carries elements of the old program, including the concepts of SmartPoints and ZeroPoints. "This customization of the ZeroPoints list offers more flexibility from the existing, and arguable more restrictive, Freestyle program," said Yuma.

WW International board member Oprah Winfrey is doing her part to help. She'll tour the U.S. in early 2020 to share her "health journey" talk about healthy living, and conduct interviews with celebrities about their health. Grossman said ticket sales are "tremendously strong" for the tour, called WW Presents Oprah's 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus.

In September 2018, WW introduced a rebranding effort, including ditching the more than 50-year-old Weight Watchers name. CEO Grossman said the WW identity was more in tune with the modern era because the mindset of "dieting" has been replaced by a more holistic approach to health and wellness. The rebrand made sense; while the global wellness industry surpassed $4 trillion a year, Weight Watchers was struggling. But marketing analyst Avi Dan calls the marketing of the rebrand "unconvincing." He points to problems with everything from its unfocused messaging to its choice of Kate Hudson as brand ambassador. Even the choice of the acronym was controversial since the double "W" is a difficult set of initials to pronounce.

WW also has faced recent backlash because of its new weight loss app for kids, Kurbo. Health experts warn it could promote adolescents to develop unhealthy relationships with food and dieting. In fact, an online petition calling on the company to remove the app has garnered more than 87,000 signatures. WW has not yielded to these demands from parents, nutritionists, and other experts, and Grossman said the backlash "strengthened our resolve and made us offensive." WW contends that the app is a healthy, scientifically-backed program to help overweight children.

The company hopes that myWW, the Oprah tour, and its rebranding will help it recover from some of its more disappointing third-quarter numbers. On Nov. 4, WW reported revenue of $348.6 million, 4.7% lower compared to the prior year. The company posted earnings per share of $0.68, below the prior year's $1.00 per share. Subscribers totaled 4.4 million at third quarter's end, lower than 4.6 million at the end of the second quarter. The day after reporting results, its shares briefly dropped as much as 21% lower.

In the first half of 2019, shares of WW stock fell 50.5%. Much of the company's decline came in late February when the stock sank almost 35% in a single day after WW reported disappointing fourth-quarter 2018 results. But it has since started to recover. In the second quarter of 2019, the company boasted strong subscriber growth, helped by celebrity endorsements, new technology -- a partnership with Aaptiv, a physical activity tracker -- and expansion in global markets, including Germany, the U.K., and Australia.

WW faces competition from a growing wellness industry, and that competition worries some investors. Shares of WW dropped 10% Oct. 2, after Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) announced a deal with privately-held app-based rival Noom, though shares recovered quickly. The companies will develop programs to "help people with obesity achieve and maintain weight loss." Noom says 45 million people use its weight-loss app and personalized meal-planning service. Apps like Noom are gaining ground because they are less expensive than commercial programs like WW, and they appeal to a younger demographic. In May, Noom raised an additional $58 million of funding, led by Sequoia Capital, which it plans to use for improving the customer experience. The two services have comparable prices, varying depending on if a person is signing up for the first time or is already a subscriber.

For its part, Grossman said on the third-quarter earnings call that WW is "acutely aware of who that competition is and what they're doing" and that WW is working to "differentiate what we can do." In July, WW's stock gained 10% on the news that JPMorgan upgraded its rating on the stock to "neutral" from "underweight." JPMorgan Chaseanalysts pointed to stabilization of subscriber trends in the first half of 2019 and the launch of myWW, which it expects to boost subscriptions and earnings growth.

In the days following WW's third-quarter report, the company's shares recovered additional lost ground and gained even more. In fact, on Nov. 19, it closed at $40.41, its best all year. That surge is impressive. And WW's price-to-earnings-growth (PEG) is -2.85, suggesting it could be a good stock for investors looking for growth.

Investors with interest in the global health industry would do well to keep a close eye on WW International in 2020. It could be a health stock that's getting healthier in the New Year.
