‘This Is Us’: Fans Are Outraged at How Kate Treats Toby’s Weight Loss, But They Agree On This 1 Thing – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

Season 4 ofThis Is Usfinds Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) going through a rough patch. They struggle with all of the typical new parent stressors, as well as their baby having a special need.

Toby and Katedeal with these new intricacies of their marriage in very different ways. Toby found that working out has helped him, but Kate is not happy abouther husbands weight-loss. Lets take a look at what fans are saying about Kates reaction. Warning: Season 4 Spoilers

Two episodes in a row, Kate has reacted poorly to Tobys new fit figure. The first time she sees her husband with his shirt off in a long time, she is mad at him. Kate is overweight, to begin with, and the couple met at a support group for people with eating disorders.

Fans took to Reddit to show their disappointment in Kates reaction. One fan wrote, If I managed to lose some weight and gain some muscle, my wife would congratulate me. Kate? Somehow takes it as an insult that Toby thinks shes fat.

Kate believes Tobys health is a reflection of her. She immediately begins to think that she is not good enough for him. He initially hides his workouts from her, which makes things worse.

Another viewer on Reddit wrote, She cant stand the fact that Toby is taking better care of himself. It begins to make us wonder about her emotional state and how she got to this point.

As fans began discussing Kates anger towards Tobys weight-loss, more profound things came about. Season 4 has shown us that teenage Kate (Hannah Zeile) had a boyfriend during her teenage years who seemed a bit controlling. The show has not yet revealed to us what happened with the relationship, but Reddit users have their theories.

One fan started the theory, I have a feeling we might understand more after we find out what happens with her boyfriend.

Then others agreed, writing, I was looking for this take. The last episode shook me, and I think were about to see what really pushed her over the edge. Ive been thinking for a while that theres more to her problems than blaming herself for Jacks death. If they take this story where I think they are, poor, poor Kate.

Users on Reddit have been hypothesizing that something very traumatic happens with Kate and her teenage boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams). Some believe he may have sexually assaulted her, while others think he could have been very controlling.

Fans are all in agreement that Kates emotional reaction to Tobys weight loss stems from the trauma that occurred with her and the mysterious boyfriend during her teenage years.

During the season 3 finale, we saw an older Toby without Kate or a wedding band. Fans began wondering if their relationship lasts through the years.

This past weeks episode indeed shows how much Toby is trying to make things work. He suggests a getaway so they can have some intimate time together. Kate is still reeling from Tobys extreme weight loss and fitness, but Toby reassures her that he still loves her and finds her attractive.

The couple certainly has their challenges, but fans want to believe that they will last in the long run. One fan on Instagram wrote, I absolutely love you and toby together from day one! You guys are amazing!

You can watch Toby and Kates relationship play out every week on This Is Us, Tuesday nights on NBC.

Weight loss: Mum loses half her body weight after being fat-shamed by her three-year-old son – The Sun

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 8:42 pm

KIDS can make the cruellest comments - and one mum resorted to locking herself in the bathroom in tears after her three-year-old son called her "fat".

Schauna Harshman, 35, said she hit "rock bottom" when her son Chase started mocking her weight and decided it was time to make a change after tipping the scales at 21 stone.

8

The mum, from North Dakota in the US, explained she always felt like "the fat ugly friend" at school and when she first fell pregnant in 2004, she gained over four stone.

I have memories of being made fun of on the school bus, coming home crying and not wanting to go back," she said.

"I also remember wearing Spanx under my clothes at school while all my friends were skinny and pretty. I was the ugly fat friend."

Revealing how she gorged on fried food, processed meals, takeaways and pasta, Schauna continued to gain weight following her second and third pregnancies, reaching over 21 stone by the time her youngest son Logan was born.

8

"I got pregnant at 18 and used that as an excuse to eat and drink whatever I wanted," she continued.

"I gained more than four stone during my first pregnancy. From there I just kept gaining weight with each child.

During my first pregnancy I was eating fast food like Taco Bell and Wendy's, I was obsessed with fries and I was regularly drinking Mountain Dew. Mason was born in October 2004 and as a new mum I most definitely didnt take care of myself.

I was making quick and easy processed meals. I was very uneducated about nutrition as Id grown up eating meat and potatoes, with a lot of canned foods. I never ate anything fresh or homemade, so I carried that on as a mother.

8

8

When I delivered my third son, I was twenty-one stone and one pound, yet he was the smallest baby.

"It was the hardest pregnancy I had because I was hyper aware that I was already big, and my doctor told me that I shouldnt gain too much weight with him.

"I developed high blood pressure while I was pregnant and had a few scares.

"I was also very uncomfortable and had a lot of back and hip pain.

I went from 15 and a half stone in my first pregnancy to over 21 stone at the end of my third.

"With Logan, I was induced three weeks early because of my blood pressure.

I knew people were looking at me, thinking woah, shes big, and Id try to ignore it but couldnt. I didn't leave my house much, if I did, Id wear jeans and hoodies, even in the summer.

It makes me sad that I don't have many pictures with my sons when they were little because I refused to be in them.

8

One day, my middle son was making fun of me, calling me fat and laughing about it.

"I was fed up of my weight but to hear my son, who loves me, make fun of me that way, Id had enough. That was my rock bottom.

I was angry and emotional. Of course, he had no idea the impact it had on me as he was only three.

"I remember locking myself in the bathroom and crying. Asking myself how I was going to fix the problem.

I told him that its not funny to call people fat and laugh about it. He could see I was really upset and he felt sad when he saw I was crying."

8

At a size 28, the mum says she felt conscious of her weight, but when Chase started to mock her size, enough was enough.

She began researching weight loss surgeries and she decided on a gastric band a band placed around the top of the stomach to make it smaller.

Almost immediately, I began researching weight loss surgery," she said.

"I set up a consultation with a bariatric surgeon and we went over the options.

"I had to do a visit with a personal trainer to learn how working out is important.

"I also had to prove that I could lose some weight before my surgery, which I did! I was 17 stone when I went for surgery."

Schauna lost more than five stone initially, but has also tried numerous diets to encourage her weight loss through nutrition.

Since surgery, the mum has improved her diet and now eats eggs, chicken and turkey for protein, nuts, protein shakes and vegetables with every meal.

Now, Schauna weighs 11st 2lb and is a size 12.

8

Having the lap band makes you eat slower, take smaller bites, and you pause in between to make sure your bites pass through the band, so ultimately you end up eating less," she said.

Within a month I joined the gym and I started doing the bike and the cross-trainer.

"I remember only being able to do 10 minutes when I first started, but I was proud of myself for being the big girl at the gym and I wasnt ashamed to be in the gym anymore.

Over the years Ive tried various diets, including shakes, fasting, low carb and keto.

"I lost most of my weight after surgery and through working out. For a good few years I was stuck around 12 stone and knew I had to try something else.

"So, in October 2018 I started a low-carb lifestyle mixed with protein shakes.

8

In January 2019 I started the keto lifestyle.

"I spent some time researching and following accounts and decided to give it a try.

"Thats when I made my @lowcarb.godess Instagram account and started documenting my journey.

Through keto I learned that its about maintaining a lifestyle rather than constantly shedding, so I switched to macro counting, which is what Im currently doing and I feel amazing.

My friends and family are so proud of me and Im so thankful for their support.

"Its given me a real drive to keep going and to show people that you can do anything you put your mind to.

"Im a mum-of-three so Im constantly running around after my sons, I work full time and still manage to track my food, eat homemade meals and work out every day.

"Anyone who sees that I can do it can know that they can too.

How to lose weight like this guy who lost 20 kgs without stepping foot in a gym – GQ India – What a man’s got to do

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:47 am

If you are not someone who's grown up battling obesity, a sudden yet continuous spike in your weight can be attributed to stress induced cycles of overeating or a major life changeone that has completely detached you from your erstwhile active lifestyle.

22-year-old Anumey Jain tells us that in his case, the latter caused him to tip close to a 100 kgs on the weighing scale and shocked him. During my school and high school days, I used to be a very fit individual but once I started studying to become a CA, I gained a lot of weight, very rapidly."

"And, suddenly, I was 97.4 kgs and couldnt shop (or find) my new correct size from any of my favourite brands," he says.

"I also started feeling very health conscious. I didnt want to drive myself into an obese state as obesity can lead to many irreversible diseases. That, coupled with the fact that I started looking ugly in all my pictures became a very big motivator for me to lose weight, he adds. And, luckily for me, I didnt have to go searching too far and too wide for a kickass weight loss inspiration story to guide me on this journey as my own beautiful mother had recently lost 22 kilos by following a strict dieting system, he quickly quips.

I remember thinking that if she can do it, I most definitely can too! And, in a years time, I lost 20 kgs by following the below weight loss plan.

After investing a considerable amount of time researching various body types, forms and weight loss plans, Anumey says that he understood that our diet has a far greater impact on our body than anything else. I made it a point to control my diet and eliminate all unnecessary food items by following a strict Intermittent Fasting routine. After all, what a person puts in their body is more important than how they decide to eliminate it.

Intermittent Fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesnt specify which foods you can or cannot eat. It only focuses on when you should eat them. There are many IF plans and patterns (12:12, 16:8, 5:2, Eat-Stop-Eat, etc.) that you can follow, but the most effective one, according to studies, is the 16:8 IF diet. The 16:8 IF diet entails one to observe a 16-hour fasting period, followed by an 8-hour eating window.

QUICK READ: Is intermittent fasting really worth It?

Along with setting a new diet plan for myself, I learnt that exercise and general fitness activities can and will help me avoid having any loose or hanging skin, once my body starts shedding pounds. But, given my hectic schedule, it was tough for me to find the time to exercise a lot or join a gym. Thus, to combat these hindrances, I downloaded to the Nike Training Club app on my phone and followed the below simple exercise regime for half an hour, daily, to tone my body.

The apps simple exercise regimens included strength training, bodyweight training and intense aerobic workout sessions. It also involved yoga routines. Many a times I combined these routines with running and cycling to get a complete body workout to burn fat."

QUICK READ: How running a little bit every day for two months changed my life

"This is what my general workout schedule looked like" -

Monday: Strength Training Workouts through body weights as well as dumbbells.

Tuesday: Running and Intense Workouts

Wednesday: Yoga and Cycling for at least 10 kilometres

Thursday: Strength Training Workout again through body weights as well as dumbbells and exercise ball

Friday: Running and Intense Workouts

Saturday: Yoga and Cycling for at least 10 kilometres

Sunday: Rest day

I usually indulges in only 1 rep for a 30 minute-duration because, frankly, that was enough for me.

Most of the exercises in strength training were just an improved versions of existing strength training exercises such as lunges turned into dumbbell lunges or squats turned into deadlift squats. Basic bodyweight strength training exercises could be modified with gym equipment to get a better effect on the body. Burpees, pushups, chin-ups were some other exercises present in the strength training regimens. Not to forget crunches and core muscle workouts. Additionally, the Yoga routines helped the body to relax and stretch at once. It also helped ease off the pressure of strength training workouts whilst being a carb buster at the same time."

QUICK READ: Benefits of Yoga: 10 reasons why men should do yoga

As a part of my weight loss plan, I set a dedicated daily routine and meal plan for myself to follow."

"This is what my daily routine looked like along with meal timings -

6:00 AM: Wake up and drink a glass of warm water

6:30 AM: Workout for half an hour

10:00 AM: Heavy breakfast and lunch combined i.e. to say "brunch" where I ate white rice, beans, lentils, daal, salad, papad, and roti. (After that, I didn't eat anything until the sunset)

6:00PM: Usually, I had my last meal of the day in the evening 1 hour prior to the sunset. This meal included light-weight foods such as upma, idli, salad, roti with paneer, etc.

I didn't eat anything after my last meal until the next morning. This plan ensured a 12-hour fasting window between his first and last meal of the day.

I have been able to maintain my current weight by making it a point to exercise daily for at least half an hour and avoiding any marketplace junk foods. I have also made it a point to stay away from any food items that don't provide any benefit to my body and merely serve the purpose of taste.

The only thing that matters on a weight loss journey is the commitment you've made to yourself to lose weight and the discipline required to follow it. Here, to help you get started, these are the commitments I made to myself to help lose weight:

1

Eliminate fast & junk food

2

Remove sugary carbs from the diet

3

Eat natural & less artificial

"Id also recommend following a strength training regimen to lose weight as its proven to be very effective and also helps tone the body and build muscle."

Weight loss: who doesnt want to know ways to debloat in 24 hours – TheHealthSite

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:47 am

Now that all the festivities are almost done, everyone is on his plan to detox and lose weight. Why not, the sugar and carb intake during the festivals always go up affecting the body weight. In fact, improper food taken this time also effects skin causing sudden breakouts and zits. Belly bloating is one of the major health problems that occurs after days of unhealthy eating. Therefore, the after-festive days demand quick detox action to bring the body back on track. While all your other plans are long-term and will take, these quick ways to detox and debloat will give some instant relief from the guilt-free binge aftermath.

A couple of days of eating wont quickly make you gain weight but if left unchecked, it might lead to some health issues. If you are suffering from bloated belly, its easier to treat. The idea is to get on to a detox plan as soon as possible so you stop the problem from growing. These hacks will not only help you debloat quickly but will also aid in fixing metabolic functions that will lead to healthy weight loss. What more do you want?

Sipping fluids throughout the day is good for your body. But when you are trying to debloat, stay away from caffeine overdose. Also, its a myth that water increases bloating. It doesnt, in fact, it helps in treating the condition. Bloating is nothing but our digestive system holding onto existing water levels. Increasing your water intake sends signals to body that it doesnt need to hold the water and can release it. This makes way for further digestion.

Detox water with ginger, cucumber and lemon can be good to sip on. Skip out on coffee; caffeine dehydrates the body which can aggravate bloating. Also, if you are drinking normal coffee with milk and sugar, it can add to your calorie intake. Thats not what you want while trying to lose weight.

Bananas are great source to debloat. They are potassium-rich and thus helps on cutting down the water retention brining immediate relief to bloated belly. The potassium present in bananas also help in balancing sodium levels in body further aiding digestive functions. Just one banana and you are done. In fact, potassium in banana also prevent absorption of alcohol in body to produce energy. Thus, body digests fats and carbs first as the source of energy. Stocking up on bananas might be a good detox plan.

You hardly feel like eating if you have bloated tummy and it might also seem like a good idea to compensate for all the extra calories you have taken. However, dont do it. It might aggravate your bloating. And the fact is you need food to get through the day, you cant starve and survive. So, rather than skipping meals, focus to eat right. A protein and fibre rich breakfast are two most energy-giving nutrients. They also delay in digestion, keeping you full and treating bloated stomach. You may want to avoid dairy that can bloat you more. With healthy breakfast, try to eat your dinner early to give your body long time to rest before the next meal.

How to avoid regaining weight and keep the pounds off – INSIDER

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:47 am

Dear Rachel,

I'm a university student and I lost 20 pounds from January to April through eating healthily and regular exercise, which I loved. My confidence and mental health, which had been affecting me for a while, were so much better. At the beginning I went to the gym with a friend and we did workouts together, but by the end I was quite happy going by myself and going into the weights section alone. It was such a relief to finally be feeling good and so much more positive about my life.

Then something happened. I started feeling like I could treat myself more. Without noticing, I stopped going to the gym and wasn't making the right food choices. I started to stress-eat around exam time and shut off anything to do with exercise, spending time in the library eating chocolate bars and chips as a comfort blanket. I didn't really notice the weight piling back on. I tend to self-destruct like this when I feel like everything's too much.

It's now a few months later and I'm right back where I started. I feel so frustrated and angry for letting myself do this when I tried so hard. I try to eat healthily but after two days I'm back to binge-eating in the evenings for no reason. I have no motivation to exercise. I feel like I'm at a standstill and don't know how to get started again.

What can I do to improve my situation? I feel stuck in the same cycle that I've always found myself in and find it so hard to stick to a regular routine.

Yo-Yo Dieter

Dear Yo-Yo,

Your frustration is very understandable believe me, I know the feeling and I honestly believe keeping weight off may be harder than losing it in the first place.

For lots of people, you get in a "zone" when you're losing weight. A certain headspace, if you will, where you're focused on your goal. You find out what works for you, and you gradually get there. It feels good.

But then once you're feeling happy with the amount of fat you've lost, you want to move into maintenance and that's often the most difficult bit.

Firstly, it's hard to know how much you can "relax" in order to maintain your current body composition rather than gain weight. Once you move away from your weight loss mindset, it's also all too easy to slip right back into all your old eating habits, which for many of us were what got us feeling like we should slim down in the first place.

So what's the solution?

Firstly, as always, don't beat yourself up.

"While I'm not condoning eating copious quantities of chocolate and not taking part in any physical activity, have you ever thought that this constant berating of yourself is feeding into your behaviour?" sports and eating disorder specialist dietitian Renee McGregor asked.

McGregor told Insider that holding yourself to too high a standard could be setting yourself up to fail.

A post shared by Renee Mcgregor (@r_mcgregor)Sep 7, 2019 at 1:00am PDT

"It's obvious from your message that you have some real beliefs about what makes you happy and a good person. While training and eating right are healthy behaviors, they should also never become obsessive," she said.

"The issue now is that because you've got this belief system that to be healthy you have to go to the gym daily and eat in a certain way, when you don't quite meet this, you feel like you've failed and so you beat yourself up."

And if you don't switch this mindset, you'll never make any sustainable changes.

The key is to try and re-train your brain as much as your body.

McGregor pointed out that taking a black and white approach to "good" and "bad" days is unhelpful.

"What can often happen is that individuals over-restrict on 'good' days," she said. "The body then finds this difficult as it is always trying to achieve energy balance; similarly if you don't provide your body with enough fuel, you will crave more sugar as glucose is the body's preferred currency to provide energy.

"So you set yourself up to fail. You over-restrict, your blood sugars drop, you eat something you deem as 'bad' which then sets up the thinking that you have failed, resulting in you eating to excess, feeding back into the self-sabotage that you are a bad person."

But it's totally possible to move away from this downwards spiral, and that's what will make any changes you implement become part of a new healthy, sustainable lifestyle, meaning any weight lost in the process is more likely to stay off.

A post shared by Rachel Hosie (@rachel_hosie)Apr 22, 2019 at 4:45am PDT

You have to stop thinking about weight loss as something which has an end goal in sight. There's no finish line.

I don't mean for that to sound depressing, or make it seem like you're going to be trying to lose weight for the rest of your life. Instead, you should figure out which healthy habits are enjoyable enough for you to become part of your lifestyle.

This mindset also helped me stop beating myself up if, say, I indulged more than usual on a holiday and put on a few pounds as a result, I feel OK about it because I know in the scheme of my life, it's insignificant. I come back from holiday, and I go back to my normal routine.

Registered nutritionist Lily Soutter agrees that it's important to stop thinking about being on a diet.

"'Dieting' can be a huge driver for binge-eating. In fact, the more restrictive we are with our diet the more likely we are to binge-eat," she explained to Insider.

"Focusing on weight loss can be counterproductive to binge-eating recovery, however, binge-eating recovery can be the best step to achieving a healthy body weight."

A post shared by Lily Soutter BSc (hons) (@lily_soutter_nutrition)Oct 12, 2019 at 1:52am PDT

Don't cut anything out of your diet or tell yourself you can't have it, as that will just make you want it even more. If you love cookie dough ice cream, you're not going to be able to live the rest of your life without it, so allow yourself some and learn that "enough is as good as a feast" (or so my mother always says to me). This essentially means re-training yourself to be satisfied by a normal portion size rather than feeling like you need to consume vast amounts.

"If chocolate is a common binge food, instead of going cold-turkey, enjoy this food daily to reduce its desirability," Soutter recommended.

"But be mindful of portion-size and the environment in which you consume this food, only buy small packs and eat slowly and mindfully, ideally in the company of others.

"Often when we eat mindfully we tend to feel more satisfied with our food which better regulates our hunger and fullness cues."

It's never too late to start again when it comes to working towards a healthier lifestyle, and don't worry about the fact that you lost weight then regained it most of us try various approaches, diets, and ways of exercising before finding what's right for us.

It's not failing. It's how we learn.

But you need to start small.

"In order to change you need to make realistic changes, baby steps that don't feel too difficult," McGregor advised.

"If the gym feels like a big jump at the moment, why don't you start with daily walks; if this feels manageable then sign up to a class, something like yoga which may feel more nurturing than the gym.

"Similarly with eating, don't create any rules about what you should or shouldn't eat. The first aim should be to prevent blood sugar fluctuations to do this try to eat something at 3-4 hour intervals."

Soutter pointed out that eating regularly can help remove the urge to binge-eat, too.

A post shared by Lily Soutter BSc (hons) (@lily_soutter_nutrition)Oct 21, 2019 at 12:35am PDT

McGregor recommends eating satiating snacks like Greek yogurt with fruit, oatcakes with houmous or peanut butter, or an apple with brazil nuts.

"This more gentle approach will help you to create sustainable, balanced behaviours and focuses on having a healthy attitude towards food and exercise," she added.

Soutter agrees that taking on too much too quickly is likely to end in disaster.

"It can be all too easy to be overly restrictive when starting up an exercise and nutrition regime," she says. "However, following a routine which is overly taxing and unrealistic can trigger an 'all or nothing' mentality.

"On the other hand, small incremental and sustainable changes can make a big impact long term."

If you lose some weight and then gain some weight, that's OK. There's no rush. And remember, health really isn't to do with the number on the scale.

If you're making healthy decisions like snacking on an apple rather than a chocolate bar, prioritizing your sleep, and getting more activity into your day, applaud yourself for that. By trying to make positive changes, you're already doing amazing.

High Fibre Diet Reduce Lung Cancer Risk, Says Study; Know Other Health Benefits And Food Sources Of Fibre – Doctor NDTV

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:47 am

High fibre diet is loaded with health benefits. There are several sources of dietary fibre which can be easily added to your diet. A recent study says that consumption of high fibre diet reduces the risk lung cancer.

High fibre diet: Foods rich in fibre can keep you full for longer

Fibre should be an essential part of your diet. It enhances digestive health and normalises bowel movement. A high fibre diet can help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels as well. Fibre is also good for diabetics. A high fibre diet helps a diabetic maintain blood sugar levels. Another amazing benefit of a high fibre diet is that it helps in weight loss. Fibre keeps you full for longer and makes you eat less throughout the day. Less consumption of calories helps you achieve a healthy weight. Recently a study has highlighted the health benefits of a high-fiber diet. Researchers from Vanderbilt University have found that high fibre diet and yogurt help reduce lung cancer risk.

The findings, published in the journal JAMA Oncology, are based on an analysis of data from studies involving 1.4 million adults in the USA, Europe and Asia. "Our study provides strong evidence supporting the US 2015-2020 Dietary Guideline recommending a high fibre and yogurt diet," said study senior author Xiao-Ou Shu, professor at the Vanderbilt University in the USA.

For the study, participants were divided into five groups, according to the amount of fibre and yogurt they consumed. Those with the highest yogurt and fibre consumption had 33 percent lower lung cancer risk against the group which didn't consume yogurt and had the least amount of fibre.

"This inverse association was robust, consistently seen across current, past and non-smokers, as well as men, women and individuals with different backgrounds," she said. Shu said the health benefits could be rooted in their prebiotic (non-digestible food that promotes the growth of beneficial micro-organisms in intestine) and probiotic properties.

Unlike FY2009, we don’t have fiscal and monetary ammunition to revive the economy quickly: Sanjeev Prasad – Economic Times

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:46 am

Sanjeev Prasad, managing director of Kotak Institutional Equities, believes that the governments investment-led growth model may be a slightly longer-term and a riskier route, but a much more sustainable one. In an interview with ETMarkets.com, he said the governments move to cut corporate tax rate to kick-start investment cycle was a necessary condition but not a sufficient one. He is of the view that the government should exit all PSU companies over time, barring a handful of strategic ones. Edited excerpts:

Government has made some efforts to boost the economy in tranches. Are these measures enough or could they have done more? The government seems to be making a pivot to an investment-led growth model versus the traditional consumption-led growth model, which we have seen for the past 3-4 years. The government understands the importance of investment and job creation and the need to kick-start the investment cycle, which will create jobs and in turn, will lead to consumption demand revival. This is a slightly longer-term and riskier route, which the government has adopted in my view but it is also a much more sustainable one. Having said that, corporate tax cut is only the first of several steps which the government needs to take to really kick-start the investment cycle. I call it a necessary condition but not a sufficient condition.

Along with corporate tax cut, we need four other things to kick-start investment in two broad areas - manufacturing and infrastructure. For manufacturing, we need reforms in factors of production. First, we need simpler labour laws in the country.

Second, India can do with easier land acquisition policies. The current land acquisition act is somewhat complicated but having said that, I have never understood why land acquisition is such a big problem in India. Ultimately, agriculture is not a viable proposition when one looks at the amount of money an average farmer makes in India.

Third, the approval mechanism in India has to be a lot simpler and automatic with limited role for the state bureaucracy.

Fourth, sanctity of contracts should be maintained except in exceptional circumstances. Of late we have seen certain states wanting to reopen contracts, which have been awarded by a previous government. Any investor would not like to deal with such uncertainty. These are the four other steps in my view that India needs to implement to attract a lot more investment in manufacturing.

When do you think the economy will start to recover and how?It is very hard to say because this is not entirely a cyclical slowdown. The current slowdown is also due to certain structural challenges in the economy, which were masked by strong consumption growth until recently. The slowdown is more visible now because of sharp decline in auto sales and general consumption over the past 6-12 months.

Look at real estate sales which have been down for the past 5-6 years. The peak was reached sometime in FY2011-12. It is not a new phenomenon in that sense and in the last 3-4 years, overall growth was held up because consumption was holding up reasonably well, but at the cost of household savings. Households were consuming more and more but saving less and less. In other words, consumption was growing faster than income. We believe income growth had slowed down over the past few years and the trend of higher consumption and lower savings was not sustainable beyond a point.

At the same time, the government was spending aggressively, particularly on revenue expenditure. However, that was at the cost of running very high fiscal deficits. Both the drivers of economic growthprivate consumption and government spendinghave challenges in my view. Among the other drivers of an economy, investment was anyway weak in India over the past few years and net exports is not really material for India.

The fundamental problem is of low growth in household incomes, which in turn points to a more fundamental issue of weak job situation in the economy. Three things may have worsened in my view in the last 3-4 years from an income standpoint. First, India is probably not creating as many jobs in the formal economy as what we thought earlier or what is required. Second, the informal economy may have seen some job losses, although this is based on anecdotal evidence. Third, farm incomes have stagnated as farm prices have been largely flat-to-down over the past 3-4 years. So, it would appear that household incomes have not been growing fast enough to sustain consumption at the previous high rate. This is a fundamental issue, which is not easy to reverse immediately. Lastly, India already runs very high fiscal deficit and thus, there is limited scope to support consumption through tax cuts etc.

In light of all of this, what is the outlook for the market for the next one year? A lot will depend on global developments and the measures the government takes to address the ongoing slowdown. If you look at the history of slowdowns in India, you can draw some parallels and some lessons from the same. For example, if one was to look at FY2001-03 slowdown, this was a period of very low investment by the private sector. The then (NDA) government opened up several sectors for private sector investment including upstream oil & gas, power generation, roads/highways, and addressed the policy challenges in telecom.

As a result, private sector investment as a proportion to GDP, which used to be 5-6% of GDP before the deregulation of the sectors for private sector investment, shot up to 14% of GDP by FY2008. There was a big investment boom in FY2004-08. Also, global commodity prices were high at that time and companies were willing to invest in metals & mining and downstream oil too. The strong growth in investment led to massive growth in the economy.

If one was to look at the FY2009 slowdown, which was immediately after the global financial crisis, the economy had a lot of capacity for appropriate fiscal and monetary responses due to low fiscal deficit and high repo rates at that time; the RBI had been progressively raising repo rates in line with economic expansion. The government cut excise duty by 400 bps and the RBI reduced repo rate by 425 bps between October 2008 and April 2019. So, the economy bounced back very quickly due to the combined fiscal and monetary stimulus from 3.1% GDP growth in FY2009 to around 8% in both FY2010 and FY2011.

The third period of slowdown was over FY2012-14 when GDP growth was in the region of 5-6%. Indias external situation was quite bad, inflation was very high at over 9%. current account deficit was also very high at over 4% and thus, the then (UPA-2) government struggled to deliver the required response to revive the economy given the macro-economic constraints.

I do not think it is a FY2009 kind of a slowdown. We just do not have the fiscal and monetary ammunition to revive the economy quickly. The question is, is it a FY2001-03 situation when the then NDA government took a number of bold steps and deregulated several sectors for private sector investment or is it a FY 2012-14 muddle-through situation? I would like to believe that the government will take the necessary steps to revive the economy. The governments decision to cut corporate tax rate is a very bold step and I would like to believe that it will follow up with the 3-4other reforms, which I talked about earlier.

Private sector capex is not on an upswing for seven-eight years now. When do you think it will recover?Private sector investment has held up at about 11-12% of GDP for the past few years and has grown in line with nominal GDP. However, the challenge is that the private sector is highly leveraged and we could see a decline in private sector investment instead of a pickup in investment. Currently, the private sector faces several challenges(1) the ability to invest is simply not there, given balance sheet issues; and (2) the willingness to invest is also limited given the past bad experience of investment in infrastructure sectors for many companies. Lastly, current ownership and pricing policies will restrict investment in basic infrastructure sectors such as electricity (distribution and transmission), mobility (urban transportation) and water (including sanitation and sewage) to government companies and entities. What are FIIs telling you? Are they willing to put in more money at these levels or would they still be on the sidelines?FIIs are very clear in their investment approach. Their portfolios, by choice or by accident, have become very concentrated towards quality stocks in the consumption sectors. They have large exposure to consumer staples and discretionary companies and private financials with moderate weights in IT and pharma sectors. Reliance Industries would be one of the few non-consumption stocks with a decent weight in the portfolios of FIIs. Most FIIs have very little interest in owning public sector or commodity stocks in India.

FIIs are grappling with the super-expensive valuations of the consumption stocks. However, they are unwilling to invest beyond the high-quality stocks in the consumption sectors, given their concerns around either the business models of other companies or their governance practices.

What is your take on the divestment process for the privatisation layout? It makes a lot of sense. The government should exit all PSU companies over time, barring a handful of strategic (defence-related) ones over time. This will help the government achieve several objectives. First, the bulk of investment in infrastructure will be done by the government and not by the private sector over the next few years and privatisation of PSUs is one way to raise sufficient funds to overcome Indias infrastructure deficit.

When I say infrastructure, it is basically a combination of electricity, mobility and water. In most of these areas, the private sector cannot even invest or the pricing of the services is controlled by the government. Thus, the private sector is unlikely to invest in these areas without market pricing of basic utilities. The government will have to do most of the investment and it would need funds to do so.

Second, many of the PSU companies have capable managements that can run the companies under the oversight of independent boards without any government ownership. The government can privatise such PSU companies by selling its stake to retail and institutional investors. There is no need of a strategic divestment in certain cases.

Third, government ownership in many PSU companies has already fallen to around 51% and the government has no option but to explore privatisation to raise additional funds to meet its fiscal targets and strategic objectives.

When do you think corporate report cards will really look better from here on? We have been talking of an elusive earnings revival for many quarters now, is it still elusive? No. Earnings revival will come because of two factors. First, banks have already created sufficient loan-loss provisions against their NPAs, which should result in a big increase in their reported profits over FY2020 and FY2021. I would assume that loan-loss provisions would come down because (a) banks have recognised the bulk of their NPAs and (b) created significant loan-loss provision with reasonably high provision coverage ratios.

Second, several companies in the consumer staples and discretionary and commodity sectors and even banks and NBFCs will benefit from the lower corporate tax rate announced by the government recently. We are currently looking at 17% growth in net profits of the Nifty-50 Index for FY2020 and 21% for FY2021.

Happy National Cat Day! Here are seven reasons to keep your cat indoors – Florida Today

Posted: October 30, 2019 at 12:44 am

Titusville firefighters gingerly extricated a cat named Suba Mae from the engine compartment of a Mercedes-Benz on Sept. 27, 2019 Titusville Fire Department

Cats are predators, which means theyre naturally adventurous. But did you know your cats outdoor adventures can be harmful to the ecosystem and could even shorten her life? While we all want our pets to live their best lives, there are a lot of reasons to keep your cat indoors.

Cats are prolific hunters. While thats sometimes a good thing they do a great job as rodent exterminatorsa cats hunting habits can disrupt natural ecosystems by depleting native wildlife populations.

According to the American Bird Conservancy, Predation by domestic cats is the number-one direct, human-caused threat to birds in the United States and Canada. Cats kill a staggering 2.4 billion birds every year, and even a well-fed pet cat will hunt.

Birds arent the only species suffering from over-hunting by domestic cats. In the Florida panhandle, the Perdido Key mouse has been classified as endangered, largely due to human development and predation by cats.

Keeping your cat indoors goes a long way toward protecting the native wildlife around your home.

Because cats hunt and eat rodents and other animals, they risk ingesting toxic substances. Poisons used to control rat and mouse populations can be passed on to a cat if she catches and eats an animal that has been in contact with rodenticides. This can lead to a costly vet bill or worse.

Cats can also be poisoned just by coming into contact with toxic substances. International Cat Care warns that a cat that has simply walked through a garden that was recently treated with weed killer could be at risk of poisoning if the chemical is on her fur when she grooms herself.

Its very important to have your cat vaccinated, even if she lives indoors. Vaccination protects cats from the deadliest communicable diseases like feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia and rabies, but other contagious ailments arent so easily controlled.

Much like the common cold in humans, upper respiratory infections spread easily between cats. According to the ASPCA, cats can develop secondary bacterial infections, like eye or ear infections or pneumonia, after contracting a viral upper respiratory infection.

Outdoor cats risk picking up parasites, too. Roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm larvae are lurking in practically every outdoor setting. A cat can be exposed by being around soil where an infected animal has defecated, or by munching on prey thats carrying live worms or larvae. A parasitic infection can cause a variety of health issues, including weight loss, diarrhea and vomiting. And yes, these worms can live in human bodies, too.

Other parasites like fleas and ticks, or fungal infections like ringworm are frequent problems for outdoor cats and their owners. Prevent an itchy, ugly or potentially dangerous situation in your home by keeping Kitty in the house.

4. Stop the violence!

Cats are territorial hunters, and while they can sometimes make friends with other cats, they prefer to be the only hunters on their turf. And theyre all too happy to fight for it.

Catfights can lead to a whole host of problems for the contenders. Bites can spread disease and cause bacterial infections, leading to painful abscesses under the skin. Claws can mangle eyes and ears, resulting in permanent disability or disfigurement. Whats worse, cats in the heat of battle often lose situational awareness and can dart into traffic.

Indoor cats make happy neighbors, too. No one wants to wake up in the middle of the night to the screeching, hissing and growling of a kitty confrontation outside the bedroom window.

Cats are adept predators, but they can also become prey. Roaming dogs, coyotes and even large birds of prey have been known to attack and kill domestic cats.

Coyotes are slowly migrating into Florida, where they have been attacking pet dogs and cats in some communities. In 2017, as coyotes started appearing around Satellite Beach, pet owners were warned to keep their cats indoors. One coyote went so far as to snatch a beloved pet cat from his owners screened porch.

More: Coyotes spotted in Indian Harbour Beach, police say. If you see one, don't feed it

Coyotes tend to be shy and elusive, but are known to attack pets when on the hunt for food. Discourage coyotes with these tips. Ginny Beagan, TCPALM

Even a clever cat can run into trouble outside. Cats are known to climb trees and sunbathe on roofs, but with their fondness for heights comes the risk of a bad fall. While cats do have an innate ability to rotate midair and usually land on their feet, this doesnt prevent all injuries.

Even more dangerous than a fall is the risk of being hit by a car. A UK study concluded young male cats are most prone to injury or death from road traffic accidents. Being hit by a car is often fatal for cats.

The easiest way to prevent every pet owners worst nightmare is to keep your cat safely inside and off the streets.

Not everyone loves cats. Some people think outdoor cats are nuisance animals and will harm them. Other people see a small, unsupervised animal as an easy target for cruelty and violence.

A Florida law that took effect in 2018 increased penalties for animal cruelty, but its not enough to assume everyone will follow the law. You cant predict what kinds of people your cat might encounter while roaming the neighborhood, but you can control who enters your home.

A cats drive to hunt means she will likely roam all over the neighborhood. Sometimes, the cat doesnt come back. This might be because some well-meaning human a few streets over thought your cat was a stray and brought her inside. Or your cat might find her way into the back of a delivery truck, stuck in someones garage or simply lose her bearings.

Whatever the reason, data published by Lost Pet Research and Recovery showed only 1.5 to 4.5 percent of cats that end up in shelters are returned to their owners. While indoor-only cats are more likely to get lost if they get out, the majority of missing cats are those that have access to the outdoors.

About Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia/Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL) are cancers that affect lymphocytes and are essentially the same disease, with the only difference being the location where the cancer primarily occurs. When most of the cancer cells are located in the bloodstream and the bone marrow, the disease is referred to as CLL, although the lymph nodes and spleen are often involved. When the cancer cells are located mostly in the lymph nodes, the disease is called SLL. The symptoms of CLL/SLL include a tender, swollen abdomen and feeling full even after eating only a small amount. Other symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, anemia, bruising easily, night sweats, weight loss, and frequent infections. However, many patients with CLL/SLL will live for years without symptoms. In 2018, there were approximately 200,000 patients in the United States affected by CLL/SLL with nearly 20,000 new diagnoses. While there are therapies currently available, real-world data reveals that a significant number of patients either relapse following treatment, become refractory to current agents, or are unable to tolerate treatment, representing a significant medical need. The potential of additional oral agents, particularly as a monotherapy that can be used in the general community physicians armamentarium, may hold significant value in the treatment of patients with CLL/SLL.

About Follicular Lymphoma

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is typically a slow-growing or indolent form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that arises from B-lymphocytes, making it a B-cell lymphoma. In 2018, this lymphoma subtype accounted for 20 to 30 percent of all NHL cases, with more than 140,000 people in the United States with FL and more than 13,000 newly diagnosed patients. Common symptoms of FL include enlargement of the lymph nodes in the neck, underarms, abdomen, or groin, as well as fatigue, shortness of breath, night sweats, and weight loss. Often, patients with FL have no obvious symptoms of the disease at diagnosis. Follicular lymphoma is usually not considered to be curable, but more of a chronic disease, with patients living for many years with this form of lymphoma. The potential of additional oral agents, particularly as a monotherapy that can be used in the general community physicians armamentarium, may hold significant value in the treatment of patients with FL.

About Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is an aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that develops in mature white blood cells called T cells and natural killer (NK) cells1 which circulate with the lymphatic system.2 PTCL accounts for between 10-15% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) and generally affects people aged 60 years and older.1 Although there are many different subtypes of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, they often present in a similar way, with widespread, enlarged, painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin.2 There is currently no established standard of care for patients with relapsed or refractory disease.1

About COPIKTRA (duvelisib)

COPIKTRA is an oral inhibitor of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), and the first approved dual inhibitor of PI3K-delta and PI3K-gamma, two enzymes known to help support the growth and survival of malignant B-cells. PI3K signaling may lead to the proliferation of malignant B-cells and is thought to play a role in the formation and maintenance of the supportive tumor microenvironment.3,4,5 COPIKTRA is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) after at least two prior therapies and relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma (FL) after at least two prior systemic therapies. COPIKTRA is also being developed by Verastem Oncology for the treatment of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), for which it has received Fast Track status, and is being investigated in combination with other agents through investigator-sponsored studies.6 For more information on COPIKTRA, please visit http://www.COPIKTRA.com. These non-GAAP financial measures exclude certain amounts or expenses from the corresponding financial measures determined in accordance with GAAP. Management believes this non-GAAP information is useful for investors, taken in conjunction with the Companys GAAP financial statements, because it provides greater transparency and period-over-period comparability with respect to the Companys operating performance and can enhance investors ability to identify operating trends in the Companys business. Management uses these measures, among other factors, to assess and analyze operational results and trends and to make financial and operational decisions. Non-GAAP information is not prepared under a comprehensive set of accounting rules and should only be used to supplement an understanding of the Companys operating results as reported under GAAP, not in isolation or as a substitute for, or superior to, financial information prepared and presented in accordance with GAAP. In addition, these non-GAAP financial measures are unlikely to be comparable with non-GAAP information provided by other companies. The determination of the amounts that are excluded from non-GAAP financial measures is a matter of management judgment and depends upon, among other factors, the nature of the underlying expense or income amounts. Reconciliations between these non-GAAP financial measures and the most comparable GAAP financial measures for the three and six months ended June 30, 2019 and 2018 are included in the tables accompanying this press release after the unaudited condensed consolidated financial statements.
