Sandi Toksvig weight loss: Bake Off star shed a huge 4st by cutting one food from diet – Express

Posted: October 23, 2019 at 9:43 pm

Sandi Toksvig is a writer and broadcaster who has turned her hand to radio, stage and television. She will appear on the small screen tonight to host the semi-final of the Great British Bake Off alongside Noel Fielding. Previously, the popular presenter opened up about her size 22 frame and the diet plan which helped her shrink down to a size 10. Sandi revealed she lost the weight by following a low carb diet plan and cutting sugar from her lifestyle.

READ MORE: Eating these five foods can help you lose weight and burn fat fast

She was first encouraged to make a change for her health when her partner voiced concerns.

Sandi signed up for the Louise Parker diet plan which encourages those trying to lose weight to make a few key changes in their lives.

Speaking in her Good Housekeeping column, she explained: I was never interested in how I look. The number one thing in my whole life is my children and I want to be there for them.

"At my worst I was a size 22, and at that size you can't go down the high street and buy yourself things that make you feel good. Your shopping options are limited in a way they aren't when you are a size 12.

I had tried every diet out there - I would lose weight for a bit, then put it back on again. Then, by chance, my partner, Debbie, and I saw an advert for Louise Parker in an airline magazine.

On the Louise Parker diet plan, slimmers are urged to cut out complex carbs and ditch sugar altogether.

I'm not quite as thin as I was, but I certainly haven't put it back on again.

The wonderful thing is I now have the tools to deal with it. Mostly now I don't eat carbs - actually I'm not attracted to them any more."

As well as changing her diet, Sandi added more exercise into her routine as the plan suggested.

When I first started I couldnt touch my knees. Now I can run 5K no problem, she added.

Family unrecognisable after incredible weightloss – and gaining six-pack abs – Mirror Online

Posted: October 23, 2019 at 9:43 pm

The McGillivray familys life used to revolve around trips to the pub and pizza takeaways.

But when mum Sue lost her mum to diabetes it gave the family the push they needed to change their lives for good.

Sue, 51, dad Roy, 56, and sons Ben, 24, and Simon, 28, joined the gym together to embark on a whole family body transformation which has seen them shed a staggering six and a half stone between them in just six months and get gym-honed bodies they could only previously have dreamed of.

Out went the bacon and egg butties, boozy meals out and fat-laden takeaways.

In came healthy meals, gym sessions and family activity outings that upped their daily step counts.

In six months Sue has lost 3.5 stone, Roy, two stone, and Ben and Simon have lost a stone between them as well as building muscle.

And they all agree it has changed their lives for good - and brought them closer together as a family.

Housewife Sue says: I had got to a point in my life where I needed to make some big changes. I had a family history of diabetes and that was something I saw for myself if I continued on the path I was on. I really felt that I needed to address my diet, my exercise.

After the death of my mum, because it was related to diabetes, it was really important to get myself sorted and not go down that same track. The way that I have dealt with my grief, this has given me a real focus, to focus on myself and get myself healthy rather than focusing on grief.

Being overweight made me feel that I had lost myself. I felt like a big person had eaten a small person. I started noticing results within two weeks. The weight started coming off, and once that happens you really get the motivation to keep going.

The family joined the Ultimate Performance gym in Manchester where former Emmerdale actress trains with Evil Steve - the man she credits with giving her her killer body.

As well as gruelling workouts, the McGillivray familys trainer Anthony Paulhe gave them nutrition plans and meal ideas which completed changed their attitude to food - and encouraged them to change their lifestyles for good.

Dad Roy, managing director of a dental firm, says: My diet and lifestyle was probably pretty average. I was working hard. I wouldnt eat breakfast in the morning, I would have something mid-miring at work, fatty food, bacon and egg sandwich, sometimes I would take lunch, sometimes I wouldnt.

In the evening I would find myself eating takeaway food because I was too tired to prepare something. You may go to the pub after work for tea, but then you would end up having two or three drinks, so then you were consuming more alcohol. That was the lifestyle.

I never realised how unhealthy I was until I had my measurements done. I had never considered myself to be obese - but I was obese.

That has got a bearing on your life. You reach a certain age, and if you allow your fitness levels to be poor and your diet to be unhealthy then you have to pay a price for that. If you look after yourself then age really is just a number.

Why would you not want to look in the mirror and see that person looking back is fit and healthy?

I did this for myself and my family. But when people start to notice your transformation and make comments, you feel 10ft tall. When you go shopping and buy new clothes and they fit nice you feel good about yourself.

I think the life-changing thing for me personally is taking the numbers away. I feel no different today at 56 than I did at 36, I probably feel better than I did at 36. To be able to say that is incredible. I think it has given me longevity, energy and focus.

Sue has lost so much weight that people who hadnt seen her for a while barely recognised her.

And they all want to know the secret to her success.

The difference in me now compared to how I first started, I feel like a different person., she says. I feel so much more confident, I feel like I have got back to who I am. I feel great. When you get dressed and people give you compliments it is nice, but ultimately it is how you feel in yourself, being able to look in the mirror and liking what you see. I am happy.

And sons Ben and Simon are so proud of the changes their parents have made - and say training together brought out their competitive streaks and helped keep them all on track.

Simon explains: There has been competitiveness between us which I think gives you additional motivation. We have always done things together as a family but tow we have found healthier things to do - go for a healthy meal, or go bowling together. We still have quality time, but we make healthier choices.

Training together as a family has definitely brought us closer together. We have supported each other, there have been challenges along the way but we kept each other on track.

The change in my mum has been unbelievable. I hadnt realised how down she was. But the change in her over the course of the last six months has been incredible. I look at how she is now - she is enjoying life and that rubs off on the rest of the family.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon credit fasting for their youthful looks – we explain the benefits – Yahoo Style

Posted: October 22, 2019 at 9:47 am

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are almost as famous for their youthful looks as their successful acting careers.

Now, the firm friends have revealed how they stay looking so young without resorting to expensive skincare, botox or surgery.

But their gruelling routines are not for the faint hearted. Jennifer, 50, who is most famous for her role on Friends, fasts for 16 hours a day. Even on her days off, the actress still starts with a celery juice.

Mother-of-three Reese, 43, who became a household name after playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, also goes without food first thing, getting by on just a coffee and green juice.

With a host of celebrity fans, Yahoo UK looks at the benefits of fasting and how to do it healthily.

The famous pair reportedly fast for 16 hours a day. [Photo: Getty]

Speaking of her daily regimen, Jennifer told Radio Times: I do intermittent fasting, so no food in the morning. I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours.

Jennifer and Reese met after the Academy Award winning actress starred as her younger sister Jill in series six of Friends.

The pair quickly became close, with Reese even calling on Jennifer to keep her looking and feeling her best.

Jen knows so much about health and fitness that I always defer to her, she said.

READ MORE: Everything you need to know about the 16:8 diet

After her green juice and coffee, Reese reportedly has a 7.30am work out, which she does six times a week.

Less of an early bird, Jennifer rises at around 9am, before exercising five times a week. Even on her non-fasting days, the actress still enjoys a celery juice, work out and morning meditation.

Speaking to Radio Times, the famous pair had never even heard of a fry up.

Fasting has garnered a lot of media attention over the past few years for its effect on weight loss.

While past diets focused on cutting calories and avoiding sugar, fasting places more emphasis on when, rather than what, you eat.

Essentially, fasting in its various forms is about calorie restriction which will inevitably lead to weight loss in most cases, Rob Hobson, registered nutritionist at Healthspan, told Yahoo UK.

Perhaps the most famous is the 5:2 diet, created by TV medic Dr Michael Moseley.

This involves fasting for two days a week, with people being advised to cut their calorie intake to just a quarter of what they would normally eat, around 500 a day for women and 600 for men. Some even go all day with no food at all.

On the remaining five days, the dieter is free to eat as normal.

By the end of the week, fasters should have consumed less, or burnt more, calories than they took in, resulting in weight loss.

Similar to the 5:2 diet, alternate day fasting has people eating normally one day and seriously cutting calories the next.

READ MORE: Naomi Campbell can go more than a day without eating. Is this healthy?

Jennifer and Reese seem to have opted for another approach, time restricted fasting.

The 16-hour fast is about limiting the time available to eat so by proxy reducing your calorie intake during the day, Mr Hobson said.

This is the easiest of fasting techniques to follow as you can eat your evening meal early (6pm -7pm) and then your first meal the following day at 10am-11am.

You can drink tea, coffee, herbal teas and water up until your first meal to stave off hunger. This method may be difficult for night owls or people with a busy social life that involves eating late into the evening.

While it may sound like a lot of willpower is required, advocates claim knowing a tasty, normal meal is just a few hours away encourages them to stick to their fast.

But critics argue simply cutting the number of calories consumed over the day, but otherwise eating normally, has the same weight-loss effect.

Story continues

A study by the University of California, Berkeley, found obese rats lost just as much weight with alternate fasting as simple calorie reduction. The two approaches were also equally as effective at lowering the animals insulin and blood-sugar levels.

However, some maintain going cold turkey and abstaining from food all together, for a set period, is easier than counting calories.

Scientists from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had 22 non-obese adults fast every day for 22 days. At the end, the participants lost up to 2.5% of their body weight.

When it comes to diets like the 5:2,a team from the University of California, San Diego, looked at nine studies that had participants fast for several days a week. They found in seven of the trials, fasters lost up to 8% more weight than the non-fasting controls.

The diet was also linked to lower levels of bad cholesterol, as well as reduced blood sugar, insulin and inflammation.

READ MORE: Intermittent fasting: How to follow the scientifically-proven weight loss method

Studies into time restricted fasting, la Jennifer and Reese, have been equally as positive.A study by Brigham Young University in Utahfound a group of 29 men lost around 2.1% of their body weight after going without food for 11 hours a day over two weeks.

Similarly,a team from the US Department of Agriculture found dieters who consumed just one meal in the afternoon for eight weeks lost 4.1% more weight than those who ate as normal three times a day.

While studies suggest fasting is effective, followers are advised to stay hydrated throughout the regimen. When they do eat, fasters should ensure they consume a range of foods to prevent nutritional deficiencies. They should also not overindulge to avoid undoing all their hard work.

When starting a fast, dieters should expect to feel hungry, as well as possibly battling a host of other unpleasant symptoms.

Fasting days can cause tiredness and affect your ability to focus on daily tasks, Mr Hobson said. Training on fasting days may also be difficult as glucose stores become depleted.

However, if planned with a little thought, you can prepare meals and snacks that are low calorie whilst high in fibre and protein to maintain fullness between meals.

High-water foods such as soups and stews are useful dishes to prepare on fasting days. Be aware this approach does not mean you can eat what you want on the other five days. The remaining days should be made up of a healthy balanced diet.

Fasting may also not be suitable for all. Experts recommend pregnant women and those with pre-existing conditions, like diabetes, talk to their GP first.

Prediabetes is a condition in which a patients blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetic. Researchers know that 80% of people with prediabetes will go on to develop Type 2 diabetes. Losing weight is a critical factor in preventing the disease.

The researchers goal is to assess the effectiveness of the Healthy Habits Behavioral Program. The program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is being conducted both at UB and at Virginia Tech.

Developed by internationally known obesity expert Leonard H. Epstein, SUNY Distinguished Professor and director of the Behavioral Medicine Lab, the program has, in previous studies, resulted in participants losing an average of 20 pounds over six months.

And the first cohort to start the program has seen an average weight loss of 16 pounds after staying in the program for 12 weeks, with a reduction in hemoglobin A1C, a type of blood glucose measurement.

We know that preventing Type 2 diabetes is possible, Biondolillo says, but it requires that patients understand which behaviors they need to change and how to make those behavioral changes last. Our program does both.

The program is free to eligible participants, who must be prediabetic (as assessed in the lab with a finger-stick blood draw), have a body mass index of greater than 25, are not taking certain medications that may cause abnormal blood glucose levels, and meet other criteria.

A screening questionnaire to assess eligibility is available online.

Participants attend 13 group sessions over six months to learn about the program at the Behavioral Medicine Lab on UBs South Campus.

They will also be assigned a case manager who will work with them on how to handle challenging situations, troubleshoot how to make healthy lifestyle changes and provide support. Blood pressure, cholesterol and hemoglobin A1C will be assessed several times throughout the six months.
