Should You Try Keto for Weight Loss? Here’s What Nutritionists Really Think – msnNOW

Here, nutritionists explain how effective it is for long-term weight loss and whether or not you should try it.With menus filled with cheese, bacon, and juicy steaks, it's easy to understand why the keto diet is so enticing. Not only is the extremely high-fat, low-carb eating plan one of the most buzzed about diets out there, but it has been touted for its ability to help you shed major pounds, boost your energy, and possibly even lower your bad LDL cholesterol levels.

But does science actually support the hype surrounding keto? As with any restrictive diet, it may help you lose weightbut for how long? Before you start swearing off all those delicious carbs, heres what to consider before you try the keto diet for weight loss.

The ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet designed to induce ketosis, a metabolic process whereby your body uses fat storage for energy instead of sugar, which is the bodys preferred energy source. Unlike other low-carb diets, which allow anywhere from 20 to 60 grams of carbohydrates a day, the recommended carb intake on the keto diet is less than 20 grams per daythats less than a single apple, banana, or sweet potato.

Another difference between keto and other low-carb diets is the percentage of calories from protein. Sports dietitian and owner of Eleat Sports Nutrition Angie Asche, MS, RD, says a common misunderstanding is that keto is high in protein (like Atkins) but it actually limits you to no more than 20 percent of your total calories from protein, to allow for over 70 percent to come from fat.

The keto diet was originally introduced in the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy, but it has gained mainstream popularity over the past few years. So why are people so obsessed with keto now? For one, keto is often seen as a quick fix for rapid weight lossand celebrities like Halle Berry (who seems to be aging in reverse), have had success on the diet, says registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator Erin Palinkski-Wade.

The fact that weight loss occurs on the keto diet, which includes foods that would traditionally be limited on diets, such as bacon and eggs covered with butter and cheese, doesnt hurt either, adds Christy Brissette, MS, RD, president of 80 Twenty Nutrition in Chicago.

As with most diets that drastically reduce or eliminate certain food groups, the keto diet has been shown to aid in weight loss. This is likely due to the satiating effect of high-fat foods. When you feel full, you have less of an appetite and end up eating fewer calories.

While weight loss is shown to occur in short-term studies, the research is mixed on whether or not keto diets lead to greater fat losses when compared to higher carbohydrate diets, Asche says. Research also shows that while fat loss occurs, so does lean muscle mass loss, since youre consuming less protein than you normally would.

So yes, you may lose weight rapidly when you start the keto diet, but unless you follow the plan strictly and stay in a state of ketosis, gaining that weight back is very likely. The keto diet isnt calorie-restricted, but the types of foods you can eat are significantly restricted, meaning youll probably have a hard time sticking to it for the long-term.

Researchers have also explored the keto diets effect on numerous health conditions, including diabetes and pre-diabetes, heart disease, Alzehimers disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and even acne.

For those with diabetes, a ketogenic diet has been found to be beneficial in reducing insulin resistance and promoting improved blood glucose control, says Palinksi-Wade, who is also the author of the 2-Day Diabetes Diet.

Although there is research showing adherence to the keto diet for up to three years can improve heart disease risk factors, Brissette says positive changes in these values happen with any weight loss diet, so its tough to say whether its the diet in particular or the weight loss that leads to these improvements. The research tells us the keto diet isnt any better than other diets for improving these values.

There are three main reasons to stay away from the keto diet.

If the keto diet may help you lose weight or improve certain health markers, why wouldnt you do it? The answer is simple: Its very restrictive, so its not ideal for long-term for weight loss.

Palinski-Wade says she personally has clients who follow a keto diet and are successful, but for the majority of people who go on this plan, I find they typically jump on board hoping for a quick fix and are unable to maintain the lifestyle long-term.

Asche agrees that the diet is sustainable for some people long-term, but unless you are content with never eating carbs again, its just not realistic.

The keto diet can also impact your enjoyment of food and how you experience food-centric events, like family dinners, brunch with friends, or happy hour with coworkers. Because keto requires strict adherence that doesnt allow wiggle room for occasional splurges, it can get in the way of enjoying everyday life.

This type of restriction might even make you a bit obsessive, where you have to track every last gram, macro, never allowing yourself to splurge on anything containing carbs or sugar in fear of knocking you out of ketosis, Asche says.

Yes, it could promote weight loss, but there are several other methods to losing weight successfully that dont involve restricting entire food groups, counting every last carbohydrate, counting your percentage of fat and protein intake daily, and being limited to meat, dairy, eggs, avocado, coconut, and low-carb vegetables, she says.

If the thought of missing out on your favorite carbs doesnt bother you, the side effects of the keto diet may. Headaches, bad breath, and lack of energy (collectively referred to as keto flu) are common when people start the keto diet. Not to mention, you may experience constipation because your fiber intake plummets.

Brissette also warns that the keto diet could also cause your body to use muscle for energy, which could slow down your metabolism and reduce your strength over time.

If losing weight is a major goal for you this year, consider exploring all of your options (preferably with your doctor and a registered dietitian nutritionist) before you commit to a diet. There are many other eating plans for weight loss that are not as restrictive, are more sustainable, and have more research behind them.

Brissette recommends the Mediterranean diet (which was named the best diet to try in 2019) as one fantastic example of a way of eating thats been tried and tested over many generations and has been consistently shown to promote longevity and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The best part? It promotes a balanced plate of healthy, delicious foodscarbs included.

If you decide to give keto a try, its important to include plenty of minimally processed whole foods, such as low-carb vegetables, plant-based fats such as avocado, olive oil, and nuts, and lean proteins such as fish and poultry. As with any major dietary change, its best to follow it under the care of a registered dietitian nutritionist or doctor.

Jen says she uses the 16:8 fasting diet, which means she eats for eight hours of the day, while fasting for the remaining 16 hours.

She said: "I do intermittent fasting, so no food in the morning.

"I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours."

Studies say the diet will help shed the pounds without causing you to starve yourself.

Researchers found that those who followed the time-restricted eating diet consumed fewer calories, lost weight and had improvements in blood pressure.

It is also said to help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, lower cortisol levels (ie. Eliminate stress) and reduce inflammation.

Jen previously admitted that she also likes to stayin shape with daily yoga, boxing, cardio and meditation sessions.

However, she says the key to staying in shape is happiness.

She added: "It's hard work, you know. You work out, you just take care of yourself and you exercise.

What is the 16:8 diet?

The 16:8 diet allows you to eat for eight hours of the day, while fasting for the remaining 16 hours.

Known as intermittent fasting, it is believed to be one of most popular dieting plans out there at the moment, and appears to be effective for most dieters.

It helps to keep to a healthy diet for the eight hours you can eat so as to get the most out of the plan.

The diet stems from the book 8 Hour Diet by author David Zinczenko and editor-in-chief of Mens Health Peter Moore.

They suggest that a longer fasting time between eating gives the body the time it needs to process the food and burn away extra fat stores.

This diet doesnt suggest you cram all your food into an eight-hour window.

Instead, it encourages the consumption of balanced foods that can burn fat and boost overall health.

Experts suggest dieters opt for lean meat, eggs, dairy, vegetables, nuts and beans each day during their eight hour window.

For the remaining 16 hours, dieters can consumer water, tea and coffee.

"You eat right, you sleep, you're happy.

"Happiness is the big key. My dad is 100 per cent Greek, he barely has a wrinkle. "Neither did my grandmother, who was 95 when she died. My life is a happy life. It's a choice."

Jenniferused to moan that her bum wobbled, saying it "has a tendency to go right and left and I'd like it to go up".

But after hitting her half century, she has stopped putting so much pressure on herself and learned to love her body.

She says: "When we're kids, we are constantly working out for smaller arms, a leaner butt, a flat tummy. Let it be. I can be a little soft."

Jen made the revelation about her 16:8 diet while speaking to Radio Times, alongside her The Morning Show co-star Reese Witherspoon.

And Reese admitted she turns to Jen for advice on health and fitness.

She added: "I just have a green juice and a coffee in the morning.

Former featherweight champion Aldo has dramatically cut weight in hopes of moving down to 135lbs.

The 33-year old has struggled with weight cuts before, leaving UFC president Dana White sceptical that he can drop another ten pounds to make the lower weight category.

White said: Aldo sent me a text telling me he wants to do this so we really havent talked about it.

But theres no way that kid can make 35 pounds. No way. You remember when he was the champ how hard it was for him to make 45 pounds? And hes not getting any younger.

So I havent even taken that serious. Love Aldo, I want to do what he wants to do but I dont think I want to see him try to cut to 35. I dont think thats going to be good for him.

Earlier this year, Aldo hinted at possible retirement, but ultimately signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC in June.

With limited possibilities left in the featherweight division, the Brazilian has his sights set on a title fight against the bantamweight champion, Henry Cejudo.

Aldo told Combate: This is the new division I want to move to, and Im asking for the title shot right away. Thats what matters for me now.

Cejudo said hes open to (fighting) anyone, so Im open to that. I want the opportunity to fight against him and beat him.

Hes an Olympic champion, a great athlete, and I respect his history a lot. He deserves everything hes winning, he has his merits.

If the UFC thinks its a great fight, I think theyll want that, its a huge challenge.

Hes been talking after defeating (Marlon Moraes) that he was open to fighting big names. Since hes open, its the green light.

No title fight between the pair has been confirmed, but that hasnt stopped the Brazilian from dropping the pounds.

MMA reporter Ana Issa posted his dramatic physical transformation on Twitter.

Despite looking on top form, there are many health risks involved in weight cutting.

Khabib Nurmagomedov had to hospitalised due to weight-loss complications, and other fighters including Cris Cyborg struggle with the process.

This is because weight cutting usually involves extreme dehydration of the body, so Aldos dramatic weight-loss could be a cause for concern.

The motivation for Aldos dramatic weight-cut is the possibility of returning to the championship throne.

In 2015, he lost his featherweight title in spectacular fashion to Conor McGregor, after being knocked out in just 13-seconds.

His last fight was also a decision loss Alexander Volkanovski in May, 2019.

However, the UFC veteran has defeated some of the toughest opponents during his 15-year career including Frankie Edgar, Chad Mendes and Kenny Florian.

As part of the study, researchers from the University of Bath and the University of Birmingham divided men into three groups- those who exercised before breakfast, those who exercised after breakfast and those who made no changes in their daily routine.

Conducted over a period of 6 weeks, the study found that men who exercised before breakfast burned twice the amount of fat as compared to men who exercised after breakfast. Men who burned more fat were also found to have stored fewer carbs to burn for energy. This made their bodies resort to fat instead of carbs as fuel for energy during exercise. However, there was no link found between timing of exercise and amount of weight loss.

As mentioned earlier, researchers also found that exercising before breakfast had a better response to insulin and blood sugar regulation. Thus, exercising at this time of the day could be beneficial for your heart health and diabetes control.

It has to be noted that scope of the study remains to be limited as it is not clear whether the same results would imply to any group other than overweight men. More research is definitely needed to testify the benefits of exercising before having breakfast.

We are simply trying to infer here that you must exercise, no matter what time of the day you choose to exercise. Everybody has different schedules and eating patterns, and on the basis of that, you should devote at least 150 minutes in a week (for moderate intensity exercise) or 90 minutes in a week (for high intensity exercise). Following are other tips you should follow:

1. Try to workout for minimum 4 days a week and aim towards exercising for 5 days in a week since the very beginning.

2. Do not do copycat workouts and train under a qualified fitness expert. Every individual responds differently to different exercise regimes and you will not get the same results as someone else is getting doing the same workout. Train under a qualified fitness expert.

3. Make sure you include strength training in your fitness routine. While cardio exercises will help you lose weight, strength training exercises will help in improving insulin sensitivity, building muscles and improving your strength and stamina.

4. Get proper nutrition, sleep well and take less stress. How you respond to exercise is hugely dependent on these three very important factors.

5. Take sufficient rest. After having accomplished the goal of exercising for 5 days in a week, make sure you have two good rest days. Rest and recovery are as important as regular exercise. It helps your body heal and reduces risk of cramps and injuries.

Andy Ruiz Jr revealed he plans to be 10 pounds lighter when he takes on Anthony Joshua in their December rematch.

The WBO, WBA (Super) and IBF champion held a work-out ahead of the rematch over the weekend and was visibly slimmer than when he weighed in for the first fight in June.

Much has been made of Ruiz Jrs recent attempts to lose weight, but the 30-year-old denied it would be a drastic transformation.

I kind of wanted to be a little heavier because Anthony Joshuas big, I wanted to carry his weight, take the punches well but I think being 10lbs lighter, Im going to be a better fighter, Ruiz said.

Ruiz Jr showed off his now famous hand speed in the work-out and has been based in Guadalajara training at high altitude.

The champion explained he and his team were determined to improve his cardio.

As boxers, we have to sacrifice being away from our loved ones, and being over in Guadalajara was something different. They had me locked in the cage so I can be an animal inside of the ring. I think that was Mannys plan, but it was a good idea though. Hes going to have some tricks up his sleeve, but so are we, Ruiz said at a press conference after the work-out.

It was pretty hard at first because the altitude was pretty high.

We were running in the mountains and doing a lot of different drills. All of the hard work we did in Guadalajara will show.

Ten pounds isnt going to make any difference, if anything its going to make me stronger, its going to make me faster, especially because hes going to be running around.

I think hes going to be trying to win by points and my job is to cut the ring and do what we got to do and let my hands go, its exactly what we been training on in the gym.
