Thompson: Stephen Curry doesn’t share your concerns about his workload he’s got everything he needs to… – The Athletic

Rick Celebrini, the Warriors director of sports medicine and performance, is tasked with the challenge of prolonging the prime production of the Warriors 30-ish stars. That is a large part of why he is with the Warriors. To that end, he was told to go shopping. Chase Center would have space for him to create what he needed. He and his staff were charged with equipping the Warriors with what their players needed to rehab, recover and repeat.
Theyve got a hot tub, cold tub and underwater treadmill, which is already in heavy rotation as Klay Thompson, Kevon Looney and Willie Cauley-Stein use it. Theyve got a mindfulness room a phone-free space where they can relax, meditate or even engage in brain-stimulating games on iPads or virtual reality training. A psychologist will even be on call if necessary. Yes, the Warriors now have their own Wendy Rhoades from Billions. Theyve also got a new AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill,...

The most advanced flying laboratory in the world: A Qantas 747s new life with Rolls-Royce – The Points Guy UK
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 8:43 pm
Most retired passenger jets go to storage facilities in the high desert of the western U.S., never to fly again. Eventually, or right away in some cases, they get scrapped. Only the very few that find a buyer who wants a cheap secondhand jet ever take to the skies again.
Even fewer just a handful in the whole world get to go on a new, adventurous life doing the coolest job an ex-airliner can have: they become flying engine testbeds. Thats the airplane equivalent of retiring from a corporate career to start a consulting gig at the cutting edge of ones industry.
When a Qantas Airways Boeing 747 did just that this week, flying from its home in Australia to the northwestern U.S. to become a test platform for Rolls-Royce jet engines, we went along for the ride a unique flight on Tuesday from Los Angeles International Airport to Moses Lake in eastern Washington state. Thats a small city with a huge airport, where theres no commercial air traffic and plenty of space for aerospace engineering company Aerotec to build a hangar for the giant airplane and transform it into a flying lab.
The most advanced flying laboratory in the world, according to Aerotec president Lee Human, who spoke at a welcome ceremony after the plane landed in Moses Lake.
Thats a pretty amazing twist in the life of a passenger plane delivered to Qantas in 2000. The aircraft has spent its 19 years of service ferrying passengers and cargo from Australia to Europe, North America and South Africa. Normal stuff for a long-haul jumbo jet. But in its new incarnation, the plane known by its given name of Lord Howe Island is going to do some really cool things, helping Rolls-Royce develop new jet engines.
Like, for example, taking off with five engines: its four normal ones, plus a smaller one for business jets mounted on the side of the upper deck. Or having an engine swapped out for a newly-designed one, creating a weird asymmetrical hybrid, since todays engines tend to have far bigger fans than previous models.
For a price of $70 million, including the aircraft itself and what it is paying Aerotec to modify the plane a complex process that will last until 2021 Rolls expects to get a platform that will take care of tough engine tests for the next 15 years. Its not run-of-the-mill flying: tests include simulated birdstrikes, icing, the loss of fan blades and behavior in heavy crosswinds.
Some of the cargo bays will be modified to install data-measuring equipment, said Rolls-Royces Director of Development and Engineering, Gareth Hedicker, speaking at the Moses Lake airport as the plane sat nearby. Some of the current passenger seats will remain, but most of the cabin will be used to house test equipment.
Eventually Lord Howe Island, a 747-400 model, will take the place of the current Rolls test plane, an older 747-200. It will likely be based in North America, where Rolls engine division already has a large presence, and will be flown by a third-party operator, not Rolls-Royce itself.
But what about that flight from LAX to Moses Lake? (MWH is the airport code for the latter, though you wont see those three letters a lot. The airport has a fully functional terminal, but currently no airline service.) It was as glorious an experience as you could expect on a jumbo jet with 364 seats but just 22 people on board: members of the press and Qantas and Rolls reps, plus a small crew. Space on board was so plentiful and the atmosphere so relaxed that one could wish for a longer time in the air.
VH-OJU the planes tail-code identifier had come two days earlier from Sydney, operating another unique flight as the Qantas points plane, a one-off service for passengers redeeming points and miles. After resting in Los Angeles, the pilots took it up the West Coast to MWH on its last day as a Qantas bird, with flight number QF6021 a special service not open for sale to passengers.
A flight with almost no one aboard, no cargo and fuel for a two-hour flight is an absolute treat in a 747, built to stay in the air more than seven times as long. So unburdened, Lord Howe Island took off in an amazingly short distance, little surprise considering it weighed under 220 metric tons but was designed for a maximum of 395. In imperial measurements, it took off 385,000 pounds lighter than it could that is the equivalent of two fully loaded 737s!
With two captains, David Bracewell and Rob Nelson, a first officer and a second officer, QF6021 also had the rare distinction of having more crew members on the flight deck than in the cabin: there were only two flight attendants, led by customer service manager Sean McLaughlin.
Even with all that space and an amazing ratio of almost one flight attendant for every three passengers, it was easy to see why VH-OJU was going out of service. Besides having four engines, the reason that gas-guzzling Jumbos are going out of style in an age of twin-engined planes, its interiors are hopelessly dated today.
Business class in a 2-3-2 layout? That was fine in the early 2000s, when 747s still ruled the skies. Not good in 2019, when a serious biz cabin has aisle access for all seats. (Unless youre Emirates, that is.)
Qantas could refurbish its 747s with new cabins, like it is doing on its Airbus A380s. But thats expensive, and new 787s are coming into the fleet. So its curtains for the Aussie Jumbos, and thats a sad thought for aviation enthusiasts who recall that Qantas was once renowned for flying only 747s. It has six left, and plans to phase them out by 2020 (a flight attendant on QF6021, as enamored of the Queen of the Skies as the passenger she was chatting with, said she hoped for an extension.)
But the four engines that spelled the 747s doom as a passenger carrier are a great asset for a testbed plane. The other two big jet-engine makers, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, also use 747s dismissed by airlines to test their new designs. If one engine goes out, a 747 with three left can still fly just fine, but a twin would need to land as soon as possible.
We want a reliable airplane that can hit the highest possible altitude and speed, and with four engines so we can operate safely with three, said Rolls-Royces Hedicker. We want to test the engine, not the aircraft.

TPG pays for all of its staff travel and does not accept free passage from airlines or any other transport companies, or free stays from hotels. Flights not available for sale to the general public, like airplane deliveries or special flights, are an exception to this policy.

How to lose weight with fasting: intermittent fasting can help you lose weight fast – T3
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 7:46 am
In this article, we'll try to explain the basics of how to lose weight with fasting and also touch on what fasting is in the first place, is fasting safe, what can you eat when you fast and provide you with some fasting tips on how to start this type of diet, even today.
We can assume two things about people reading this article:
1. You are interested in fasting2. You would like to lose some weight
If it is the latter you are here, we also recommend reading our story on how to lose weight fast, which provide you with some handy tips about the topic. Let's not forget, we also covered keto diet basics with Bulk Powders before, as an alternative.
Exercising is also a great way to lose some excess weight and you've guessed it! we have things to say about that, too: we can help you to get into running with some super couch-to-5k training tips as well as resistance training plans, like our two-day push-pull plan or you can also try our beginner calisthenics workout plan.
Without further ado, let's get right into it.
IMPORTANT: if you have a history of eating disorders, have loads of extra weight, are pregnant or just concerned about starting fasting in general, please consult your doctor before you start fasting. it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to health-related issues. Also, children are not advised to fast. Please be sensible.
Fasting is a type of cyclical diet regime
To clarify, when we talk about fasting here, we mean intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is a cyclical calorie intake routine that alternates between periods of no food intake (a.k.a. fasting) and periods of calorie consumption (any other time outside the fasting period).
The most popular way of fasting is the 16 8 diet method, when you fast for 16 hours and only eat in an 8-hour window. There are other fasting techniques, like when people skip eating a day or two during the week and only drink. There are also more extreme versions which are not recommended for anyone who aren't familiar with the effects of fasting on their bodies and/or have health issues.
Fasting has been scientifically proven to be a useful tool for lose weight, if for no other reason, because you naturally eat less if you restrict your consumption for fewer hours a day. This will also give your body time to repair, since it's not preoccupied with the digestion and storage of food.
A balance diet is still very important, even if you aren't planning on fasting
The most popular way of fasting is the aforementioned 16 8 diet method. This way, you reduce your calorie consumption window from infinity to 8 hours a day. For the remaining 16 hours, you can still drink water (and you should drink water, plenty of it), black coffee and green tea.
The easiest way to get into fasting is to introduce the concept to your body gradually. By not jumping right into it, you are more likely to stick with it and turn it into a habit, which will help you effectively keep down the lost pounds.
Start off by not eating anything from 8 PM until 8 AM the next day. With this, you are already limiting yourself to eat only for 12 hours a day, and even better, you will sleep through most of it.
Over a period of a week or two, gradually increase the fasting window from 8 to 12 hours, by adding an extra hour in either in the evening or the morning. The most common way is to do a 16-hour fast is to stop eating at 7-8 PM and finish it at 11 AM-12 PM the next day.
You can start fasting at any point, no need to wait until the 1 January. The sooner you start the process, the earlier you will see results. Easy as that.
Avoid processed food, bad carbs, unhealthy fats and added sugar
It is recommended not to take in any calories during fasting, only liquids. Water is something you should drink anyway, but it is especially important to drink plenty of water when you fast. Black coffee and green tea are also permitted during the fasting phase, but don't overdo them. They both contain caffeine so over-consumption can lead to unwanted side effects.
As for outside the fasting window, there is no restriction of what you can or cannot eat, but it is recommended to avoid processed and fast food as well as excessive alcohol consumption. In general, try not to cut back on calories too much, especially at the beginning, to help your body adjust better.
Once you used to fasting, you can introduce other changes in your diet, like avoiding added sugar, food with high glycemic index, bad fats and so on. Try to plan ahead on what will you snack on when cravings arrive, because they will most definitely come at some point during the day. Protein and nutrition bars are a great way to combat cravings throughout the day.
Fasting is safe, especially if you don't go crazy from Day 1 (or ever)
Fasting is safe as long as you don't overdo it. If someone go from a high-calorie and high-sugar diet to not eating for 16 hours, they will feel dizzy and jittery, due to the withdrawal effects from their previous dieting habits.
As with any diet, be sensible when you start fasting. As mentioned above, try gradually increasing your fasting window and try not to cut too many calories from one day to another. By not eating for 8-12 hours, you will naturally take in less calories, without any other restrictive factors.
Once you are comfortable with fasting, you can try and switch to healthier diet overall. The key is, as before, to be unhurried with the process, and swap bad things out one at a time.
For example, instead of having a Mars bar, have a protein bar in the afternoon or instead of having a triple shot vanilla latte with extra cream after lunch, have a smaller cappucino. And of course, instead of having a side of fries, have some baked potatoes or even better, baked sweet potatoes.
By cutting added sugar out of your diet, you can also avoid the highs and lows you feel when you eat the sweet white substance. We'll discuss this in another article.
Start with some light exercising at the beginning
It is safe to work out after the initial transition period.
It is not recommended, however, to start working out heavily as soon as you start your new fasting diet. This is especially true to people who go from a high-sugar diet to fasting. The withdrawal symptoms from taking less sugar is not a safe way to start working with heavy weights.
Light exercising is permitted even at the beginning, let it be some jogging or easy cycling. Again, it is important not to put your body under too much stress.
If you are planning on gaining muscle mass, you can still benefit from fasting, but probably not the 16 8 diet method. You might want to try going a day or two without eating a week, to rid your body from toxins. Ideally, fast on your rest days so it won't effect your performance in the gym.
If you would like to work out on fast days, take some BCAAs to aid muscle repair. BCAA powders and pills contain no calories and therefore won't break your fasting period. Needless to say, mix it water and not milk or milk substitutes.
Supplements like creatine and Nitric Oxide pills (a pre workout that contains no stimulants) are also safe to consume during fasting since they contain no calories either.
Fasting is an excellent way to lose weight and to rid your body of toxins. Even better, you naturally lower your calorie intake by not allowing yourself to eat whenever you want to. This can not only help you lose weight without much effort, it will also help you practice some discipline over your own body, keeping your mind in control over your cravings.
As with all dieting methods, being sensible is key when it comes to fasting. Don't try to change everything too fast; allow your body to adjust to the different requirements. If you would like to further aid your weight loss, you can also introduce some light exercising when you begin fasting, like easy jogging or light cycling, which in turn will also release serotonin on your body.
At the end of the day, it is all about achieving and maintaining a balanced lifestyle and bodyweight and reap the long term benefits of being happier and healthier.

Eating This Type Of Food Can Help Make Your Weight Loss Goals A Bit Easier – International Business Times
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 7:46 am
Observing a healthy diet, coupled with a great deal of exercise, is the best way to achieve weight loss goals. Such a diet should include foods that are high in protein. This brings to mind the question of how much of this food group should you consume?
High-Protein Foods
Foods that are high in protein include fish, lean meat, and dairy. Eating more of whole, unprocessed foods like grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits can also help a great deal.
According to Harry Smith, a nutritionist at Snap Fitness, those who aspire to lose weight fast should ensure they consume at least one fist-sized protein serving and two plants with every meal. By eating more high-protein foods, waistlines get to shrink faster.
Foods that could help you lose weight Photo: stevepb - Pixabay
Smith also advises that slimmers should make sure they have lots of eggs, meat, dairy, nuts, and fish in their fridges and cupboards. Combining high-protein food with a low carb diet can also work wonders for those who want to lose weight faster.
Eating In Moderation
He also revealed that there is no need to completely cut out certain food groups when trying to slim down. This means you can still eat your favorite food while trying to lose weight. The important thing, according to Smith, is you eat many of these foods in moderation. If you have been eating a pint of ice cream in the past, perhaps you can only consume a quarter of that amount. The same thing goes for foods that are otherwise considered fattening.
In fact, in Smiths opinion, there are no fattening foods when taken in moderation. You can still consume and drink your favorite foods and beverages, although in small amounts, while trying to lose weight.
You must also ensure that you eat lots of high-protein foods compared to other food types. It is also very important that you stay in a caloric deficit by making sure you eat less than your body could burn off.
Smith also reminds slimmers to take note of the calorie content of the food you eat as some food types contain a huge amount of calories in one single mouthful. Some biscuits, sweet treats, and cakes can contain more than 500 calories, which can cause you to have a calorie surplus instead of a deficit.

Love Islands Kieran Nicholls slams fad diets after being falsely used in a weight loss ad – OK! magazine
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 7:46 am
Former Love Island contestant Kieran Nicholls has hit back at fad diets after he was used in a weight loss ad without his permission.
The 27-year-old, who works as a personal trainer, shared a pic of the misleading ad to his 100,000 plus followers and posted a lengthy rant against both the company and fast weight loss products in general.
Kierans post started off by saying that the picture was in by no means an ad on his behalf and that the company BoomBod had never contacted him to use his image.
He wrote: NO THIS IS NOT AN AD far from it in fact. Since being on love island and classed as an influencer obviously Ive had lots of brand deals and other offers from companies asking me to promote their brand helping with sales.
BoomBod havent actually asked me for any promotion or a collab of any kind, probably because they know Im a PT and I know how fat loss works and this S**t they selling, quite frankly, it does NOT.
He continued to say that he was happy to promote brands and products that promoted a healthy lifestyle.
He explained: Im happy to help promote clothing brands, natural healthy meal prep companies , protein brands etc etc, you name it Ill do it. AS LONG , as it stays in the line of work that I do and believe in and/or wont have any harmful effect on somebody elses health, Physically and mentally.
Kieran rounded off the post by saying that users wanting to lose weight should consider consulting a physical trainer or health professional rather than buying weight loss products advertised by social media influencers.
He wrote: SO next time you see and 7 day quick fix to shredded, rapid weight loss drink or any other quick fix fad bulls**t take a second and think maybe Ill ask for some advice from a professional.
Rather than a influencer whos posting an old pic of them when they was in shape claiming its from using a fat loss drink for their OWN financial gain.
Many of his followers praised Kieran for his brutally honest post. One user commented: Love love love this! Most realistic person ever!
Another wrote: Yesss this is how you use a platform! A third posted: Someone finally using their name to educate othersrefreshing.
Kieran, who was recently linked to Lauren Goodger, entered the limelight in 2018 when he appeared on series four of Love Island.
His appearance on the hit ITV2 reality series was cut short after he unsuccessfully tried to couple up with both Georgia Steel and Alexandra Cane.
Since leaving the show, he's continued his work as a personal trainer, wellness coach and last year showed off the results of a successful hair transplant.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Before And After – ‘I Lost 189 Pounds’ – Women’s Health
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 7:46 am
My name is Kathleen Golding (@kathleeng1112). I am 28 years old and live in New Bern, North Carolina. After 20-plus years of struggling with obesity and an eating disorder, I decided to take control of my life, get a gastric bypass, and commit to changing my lifestyle permanently.
My whole family has struggled with weight my entire life, and I grew up overweight. I was always the biggest one in my class and remember having to get a doctor's note to start Weight Watchers when I was in the fourth grade. My weight yo-yo-ed throughout my childhood and teens but I was always active in sports, so that helped at the time. But as soon as I graduated high school and stopped being active, I noticed the weight start to pile on.
I struggled a lot with anxiety when I left for college and turned to food for comfort. By the time I was 22, I weighed 300 pounds and had full-fledged binge eating disorder. I would eat three large meals from McDonalds in one sitting. I was living with my parents and trying to hide all the food from them because I was so embarrassed. I tried therapy for two years to get my issue under control, and at the end of my treatment, my therapist suggested looking into gastric bypass surgery.
Often times its seen as cheating or taking the easy way out. It's notbut I'll get to that later. Nothing else was working for me, though. I got to the point where I was totally desperate. I felt like a failure and that I would never be successful without surgery.
Food was an addiction for me and I didnt think Id ever be able to stop eating in the way that I did. I tried every diet imaginable and would quit every time. I lacked the willpower to keep going, and that made me start to hate myself and my body. When I was 24, I could barely reach down to tie my own shoes, could only wear leggings and my dads 5XL T-shirts, and I was taking diabetes and high blood pressure medications.
I was scared but I knew I needed helpand that's when I made the decision to go through with a gastric bypass. I had my surgery on June 9, 2016, and I remember walking into the bathroom to change into my gown. I looked in the mirror and was crying hysterically. I was terrified and excited. I looked myself dead in the eye and said: You will not fail." I was doing this for me.
Thats a far-too-common misconception about people who have weight-loss surgeries. In the months following my operation, I had to completely overhaul my entire life in order to make any amount of weight loss permanent.
I ate a low-carb, high-protein diet, learned to cook, and felt all the amazing changes that come when you stop filling your body with greasy fast food and start fueling it with foods that are good for you. I measured *everything* and paid attention to serving sizes. And eventually, the changes I was making started to come naturally and living a healthy lifestyle was second nature. But this is not something that you learn overnight, and it's not something that the mere act of getting surgery magically teaches you.
Before it was nonstop junk food for me. Now, I'm super conscious of what I put into my body. Heres what I typically eat in a day now:
I started off slow with exercise, by walking, swimming, and eventually moving on to yoga. To be honest, though, I still hate going to the gym.
Before having surgery, I would try and go to the gym but would get so frustrated and discouraged with how hard it was to move my body. I felt ashamed and like everyone there was judging me. I hated that feeling of being the fat girl at the gym.
Now, I still hate going to the gym, as a part of me still feels like I dont belong there, even 189 pounds lighter. So, I've found other ways to work out. I'll usually take my dog for a long walk, go to a Pilates class, or do a workout at home with a YouTube video.
I transformed my entire way of living, both physically and mentally, in a 12-month period. And while the weight change was amazing, I saw the biggest transformation in my mental state and the way I thought about myself. I started to fall in love my body for the first time in my whole life, not because it was getting smaller, but because of how strong it was.
My motivation comes from a serious refusal to go back to the way I was. I dont ever want to be a slave to food or feel trapped inside of my own body. My husband and I are also trying to get pregnant and currently dealing with fertility issues, so while we wait for a positive, I keep telling myself that I need to make my body as healthy as possible so its ready to carry our baby.
I could have chosen to keep my surgery a secret, like so many people do, and preached about the importance of counting calories and a keto lifestyle, or that drinking a shake every day helped me get those results. But I don't ever want to mislead people or feel ashamed about my approach. It's just as valid as anyone else's.
I want to be genuine and authentic for the people that feel the constant sting of failure while watching so many people succeed, for the people that want to get healthy but need help doing it.

I was on the verge of burnout. Here’s what happened when I took almost a month off – Fast Company
Posted: October 17, 2019 at 7:46 am
This past year was a major year of growth for me and my company. In 2019, I raised more investment capital and launched our collection on Rent the Runway, one of the fastest-growing fashion startups of the past decade. And after applying to about 100 accelerators, pitch competitions, and venture capital firms, I finally landed my dream fellowship with Tory Burch. I was feeling very lucky, watching my dreams come true before my eyes.
But simultaneously I was exhausted and having a hard time staying positive. Why was I feeling so tired and anxious around work?
I was on the verge of burnout. The Mayo Clinic says, Job burnout is a special type of work-related stress a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity. According to a recent Gallup study, two out of three workers feel burnout at some point. The reasons vary from person to person, but all the factors in Gallups report spoke to what I was going through.
Its well documented that female entrepreneurs are not treated equally to our male counterparts. For me personally, its compounded by the fact that Im a black female founder. Women are often overqualified and underfunded, and many of us have families and children to support at the end of a workday.
My workload had dramatically increased, but my everyday support had not. I handled what seemed like everything: design, product development, sales, team management, production, customer service, capital raising, office management, marketing, travel, writing articles, cleaning, working out, eating healthy, and managing social media. Sometimes I felt a little overwhelmed.
Small-business owners have so much on our plates as we manage all aspects of our business. You certainly feel a lack of role clarity when your job in the early days is to make sure everything gets done.
Managing myself as a first-time entrepreneur, I often wonder if the choices Im making are the right ones. Even the question of whether Im working too hard or not working hard enough can be an agonizing battle of indecision.
I constantly feel the stress of having way too much to do and not enough time to do it.
And then by chance, after eight months with zero time off, I was afforded the opportunity to invest in two areas critical to avoiding burnout, according to the Mayo Clinic: relaxation and work-life balance. I took most of the month of August to recharge in both ways.
During the first part of August, I traveled to Los Cabos, Mexico, to stay at Le Blanc resort, a 5-star hotel and spa. Besides tourism, Los Cabos has a culture of surfers, retirees, couples, and individuals who are looking to take it a bit slower in life. The aesthetic of the resort reflects the areas natural environment: minimal, serene, rustic and earthy.
I spent four wonderful days at Le Blanc hotel. I had a top-floor honeymoon suite with an ocean view where I could clearly see the sunrise daily. My butler would also set up my daily spot on the beach and offer any logistics I needed for each and every whim during my stay. One day, I visited the town of Todos Santos or All Saints, a colorful and beautiful town full of art galleries and local artists. I had a wonderful massage at their spa and ate all the delicious food I could. But mostly, I spent my time lying on the sand looking out at the Sea of Cortez and reading Ottessa Moshfeghs My Year of Rest and Relaxation, which was a page-turner.
I spent the second part of my month of rest and relaxation at the wellness retreat Hilton Head Health (HHH) on Hilton Head island in South Carolina. Recently voted No. 1 health and wellness resort in America by USA Today 10 Best, it has a focus on creating a purposeful vacation with weight loss and longevity programs.
When I arrived I wasnt sure what to expect. I stayed in a beautiful town house with golf course views and was picked up by HHH staff for my daily activities, which ranged from a metabolic test to learn what my daily calorie intake should be in order to achieve my weight loss goals, to a work-life balance consultation, cooking classes, and a range and flexibility test.HHH provided me a diary so I could be accountable for myself from my calories down to the glasses of water I drank each daily.
I was on the Living Well fitness track, which is geared toward executives looking to get their health, fitness, and overall wellness back on track. My personal favorite activities were paddleboarding at Outside Hilton Head (shout-out to our guide Jean, who was easily one of the best parts of my Hilton Head stay), the Spin Class at the Hilton Head cycle bar, and my almost daily visits to Hilton Heads Bikram yoga studio around the corner (which is my regular workout at home because it burns 700 calories in 90 minutes).
HHHs staff, coaches, and other guests were so incredibly kind that it actually inspired me to be a kinder person as well. I finished my stay at HHH with a facial and two massages.
I also met someone special, and that experience gave me the perspective of remembering the reason I am doing all this. I dont want to climb the ladder of success to arrive at the top and see the view all alone. Love, friendship, romance, growth, and quality time are all the things that make life worth living. So dont forget to take care of yourself and find others you can nurture as well. Make time for balance, rest, relaxation, and love.

Maintaining Weight Loss in Diabetes Is Key to Keeping Benefits – Medscape

Individuals with type 2 diabetes who maintain weight loss after an intensive lifestyle intervention have sustained improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors, and those who regain weight not only miss out on the benefits but may have a worsening of their metabolic profile, say US researchers.
In a new analysis of data from the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) trial, Samantha E. Berger, PhD, of Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues studied almost 1600 individuals who followed an intensive lifestyle intervention.
Particularly among participants who initially lost at least 10% of their body weight, maintaining the weight loss over 4 years led to significant improvements in cholesterol levels, blood glucose, and blood pressure, among other parameters, compared with those who regained weight.
The research, published October 9 in the Journal of the American Heart Association, also suggests that people who regain weight could still experience cardiometabolic benefits, as long as they regain no more than 25% of the original weight loss.
Hence, "maintaining 75% of weight loss was generally beneficial," the researchers conclude.
"These findings emphasize the dual importance of not only achieving a heathy body weight but maintaining a healthy body weight," said senior author Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, in a press release by the AHA.
And although she acknowledged that keeping off the pounds can be "challenging," she cautioned: "If you lose weight and don't maintain it, the benefits are diminished or disappear."
Lichtenstein told Medscape Medical News that, in general, "People understand that they need to lose weight."
However, they "frequently go on extreme diets and are successful in losing the weight, but we don't seem to be putting as much emphasis on how crucial it is to keep the weight off," she asserted.
"It may feel terrific" when people lose weight quickly, but "you don't get the metabolic benefits unless you make sustainable changes to daily food intake or the way you moderate your energy intake."
This means maintaining lifestyle changes "essentially over a lifetime" for individuals to be able to "get back in balance."
Weight loss programs, Lichtenstein added, will therefore "have to put a lot more emphasis on what happens after someone successfully loses weight and not just celebrate that point."
In the new article, researchers say few studies have directly compared individuals with successful weight loss maintenance (maintainers) and individuals who regained weight (regainers).
In addition, the impact of weight regain after weight loss on cardiometabolic risk factors "is not well established."
In part of the Look AHEAD randomized controlled trial, individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who had a body mass index (BMI) of over 25 kg/m2, or 27 kg/m2 if taking insulin, were assigned to an intensive weight loss lifestyle intervention or standard care.
The intervention lasted for 1 year and involved group support sessions, calorie and fat gram restrictions, and meal replacement and physical activity recommendations, with the aim of losing approximately 7% of body weight.
The participants, who were recruited from 16 sites across the United States, then entered a 3-year maintenance phase.
For the current analysis, researchers focused on 1561 individuals from the trial who were assigned to the intervention group, had initially lost at least 3% of body weight, and had follow-up data to the end of year four.
Within these groups, participants were classified based on how much weight they regained after the initial weight loss.
Those who gained none (0%) were termed "maintainers" and the rest were termed "regainers." The degree of weight regained was divided into four increments: 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of percentage weight-loss regained (weight change from years 1 to 4 as a percentage of the first year of weight loss).
Change in cardiometabolic risk factors after initial weight loss was compared in maintainers and regainers, after controlling for demographics, medications, and baseline and year 1 change in BMI.
The effect was also assessed separately in participants with < 10% weight loss and 10% initial weight loss.
As expected, individuals who lost more weight initially were significantly more likely to have improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors at year one than other participants. And those who initially lost more weight were significantly less likely to have started on diabetes and antihypertensive medications, and were significantly more likely to have stopped them during follow-up.
Among those who lost 10% initial weight, the results across most risk factors indicated maximal risk factor reduction among maintainers who successfully maintained 100% of the lost weight.
Successfully maintaining most ( 75%) of the weight loss (25% regain cut-point) was also associated with significant maintenance of improved risk factors.
In contrast, regainers showed significant deterioration in some cardiometabolic risk factors from years one to four.
Meanwhile, "For those who lost < 10% initial weight, keeping it off is better than regaining, but it appears the degree of maintaining the weight loss has little impact on cardiometabolic risk factors," the researchers say.
Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of intervention programs focusing not only on weight loss but weight loss maintenance, "given the adverse consequences of the latter," the authors reiterate.
"The important thing is, once you successfully lose weight, to really put a lot of emphasis on keeping it off," Lichtenstein told Medscape Medical News.
Finally, the researchers also say more work in this area is sorely needed.
"The findings from this study emphasize the need to further investigate long-term impact of partial weight regain after a weight loss intervention given the challenge of keeping off all of weight lost," they write.
The Look AHEAD trial was conducted by the Look AHEAD Research Group and supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; National Institute of Nursing Research; National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities; Office of Research on Women's Health; and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The authors have reported no relevant financial relationships.

When looking for a weight loss diet plan, looking to those who have recently slimmed down can be a good way to get inspired. One woman has used social media to share snaps of her impressive weight loss transformation. As well as sharing pictures of her slim frame, the Reddit user guesstalt posted her diet and fitness tips. She combined intermittent fasting with exercise to make the huge transformation.
In the post, the slimmer revealed she had slimmed down from 19st 4lb to a trim 12st 7lb.
Speaking of her incredible change, guesstalt revealed she followed an intermittent fasting plan.
On this diet, slimmers will restrict when they eat to certain times of the day and fast for the remaining hours.
Some will choose to do this by eating within a four or eight hour window during each day, such as between 12pm and 8pm.
Others will choose to eat all their daily calories in one meal of the day, also referred to as OMAD.
The slimmer said: I started doing 16:8 - six days a week, one free day - about two years ago, and Ive been doing OMAD five days a week with weekends only 16:8 for all of 2019.
gesstal told other Reddit users she would eat one meal a day an give herself a one hour window to do so.
She posted: My meal Mon-Fri is dinner. I usually break my fast around 6pm to 7pm and give myself an hour or so to eat what I need.
I try to eat lots of vegetables and get my protein, but other than that, I eat what I want within my calorie goal. IF has been a game changer for sure.
The dieter explained she continued the diet plan through the entire duration of her weight loss journey.
Whats more, she sped up her results by adding in exercise and has focused on combining weight training with cardio.
I lift or do circuit training five days a week Mon-Fri in the morning and 20 to 30 minutes of cardio several days a week in the afternoon, she added.
