Can’t get in shape? 1 in 4 have tried at least 16 different weight loss strategies! – Study Finds

NEW YORK Nine in 10 American adults have tried at least one weight loss strategy in their lifetime. A poll of 2,000 adults reveals that 91 percent have tried at least one strategy for weight loss, with half claiming that theyve tried 11 different methods of shedding extra weight!

A quarter of Americans even confessed to trying at least 16 different weight loss strategies.

In fact, 32 percent of respondents who have been on a weight loss journey reported successfully losing weight but then gaining it back, while only 28 percent report successfully losing weight and keeping it off.

However, going on a weight loss journey doesnt appear to be sustainable for many, as respondents described their overall experience with weight loss as overwhelming (37%) or unsuccessful (31%). Only 15 percent described their weight loss experience as rewarding. Almost two-thirds (65%) agree that it is difficult to think about weight loss long-term because of the sacrifices that come with it.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of evidence-based weight care platform, Found, the survey revealed that most respondents felt that losing weight (34%) required more sacrifice than having kids (33%), cutting back on finances (30%), and even starting a new job (28%).

Reflecting on their own weight loss experiences, respondents felt they had to sacrifice their happiness (31%), mental well-being (29%), and love or relationships (28%) in order to lose weight. More than half (54%) have even given up on losing weight because they felt they were sacrificing too much.

Those surveyed had goals that went beyond the numbers on the scale. Of those who have gone on a weight loss journey, 44 percent said the outcome they were most hoping for was feeling more confident with their bodies. Other popular goals include wanting to feel healthier overall (42%) and wanting to be able to do an activity without stopping, such as walking a mile, climbing stairs, or strolling through the mall (42%).

In fact, almost four in five (79%) want to be healthier, not skinnier. Two in five wanted to have more energy and 34 percent felt victorious when others noticed their efforts.

This data validates what many of us who have tried to lose weight before have known for a long time: that traditional weight loss journeys require too much sacrifice and leans too heavily on the idea of personal willpower, says Dr. Acacia Parks, chief behavioral health officer at Found, in a statement. As someone who has struggled with my weight my whole life and also as an expert in psychology, I know that the feeling of extreme sacrifice doesnt lead to lasting weight loss or positive mental health and only fuels stigma around needing help. To achieve sustainable weight loss, it is important to provide people with a personalized program that works with their unique biology and lifestyle, not against it.

Beyond sacrifice, another key challenge with weight loss according to survey respondents is the stigma associated with the journey. The data reveals that this stigma is decreasing compared to several years ago, with 73 percent of respondents reporting that they are more comfortable discussing weight loss with their family and friends compared to five years ago.

Looking at health overall, 71 percent take medication for physical or mental health conditions, or both. In addition, the concern around discussing these medications openly has decreased, with more than half (59%) of all respondents feeling more comfortable talking about their medications than they were a few years ago.

Although people are more comfortable discussing their weight loss today compared with five years ago, there is still some stigma around discussing the medications theyre taking for their physical and mental health.

Results showed that 41 percent of respondents are very comfortable talking about their physical health medications, such as for diabetes and thyroid, compared with only 29 percent who feel the same with mental health medications, such as for anxiety or depression.

In terms of medications related to weight loss, one in three wished they had access to taking prescription weight loss medications to lose weight.

Its time we evolve the mainstream weight loss narratives that are outdated and tell us its our fault we arent losing weight, says Dr. Rekha Kumar, chief medical officer at weight care platform, Found. The science clearly shows that eating and exercise changes dont address the biological components associated with weight, which is why medications can be extremely valuable in a weight loss journey.

Clinical evidence proves that medication in combination with lifestyle changes can result in up to an additional 7-10 percent total weight loss, Kumar continues. This survey validates that people are struggling to find effective and long-term weight loss solutions, with 37 percent looking for both a supportive community and access to a program that feels sustainable.

Eli Lilly weight loss drug for type-2 diabetes approved by the FDA – Yahoo News

Yahoo Finance senior health reporter Anjalee Khemlani details Eli Lilly's type-2 diabetes drug approval by the FDA for use as a weight loss drug.

SEANA SMITH: All right, well, a possible blockbuster in the fight against obesity. Anjalee Khemlani has that story for us. Anjalee.

ANJALEE KHEMLANI: That's right, Seana. Eli Lilly got their diabetes drug approved by the FDA for use as a weight loss drug, and that gives it a little bit of an edge against and a higher dose of version of the drugs from Novo Nordisk. This drug now showed in some studies to give individuals, especially those taking the higher dose of the drug, a weight loss, as much as 20% of their body weight.

So, that is really causing quite a stir. There is some concern however, about the long-term impacts of that. Some experts have noted that these drugs are used only for a certain period of time. Also, higher dosages tend to result in higher side effects. So, that's also something to work-- to focus on. But on that point of the eventual weaning off of the drug may result in that reduction of that weight loss as well.

So, it could be just a short-term payoff. However, that being said, it is still something new in the arsenal against obesity. And so, this is really where some of the excitement comes on. And of course, you can see Lilly benefiting from that.

Rebel Wilson shocked fans last year with her weight loss journey. Quite literally the Internet was going crazy over her Awards night looks and swimsuit pictures. Up until now, the "Pitch Perfect" star credited her transformation to self-care: she focused on herself and her body during the pandemic. However, according to a new interview the star did with PEOPLE, self-care wasn't her only motivation.

In fact, Wilson's care for others a future family, in particular fueled her healthy habits. In 2019, the celeb's fertility doctor recommended that she lost weight if she wanted to successfully freeze her eggs. "I was taken aback. I thought, 'Oh God, this guy's so rude.' He was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight," Wilson told PEOPLE. "It's almost like I didn't think of my own needs. I thought of a future child's needs that really inspired me to get healthier."

The "Senior Year" star knew that if she took better care of herself, she could better care for a child. But in order to do that, she had to get to the root of her eating habits: "It was about dealing with the emotional issues that caused me to emotionally eat, and that's a process," she told PEOPLE.

Wilson only more recently considered fertility as an option, telling PEOPLE that she would love to have a family with or without a partner. "Any woman who's gone through it, I really relate to," she said in her PEOPLE interview. "It's been an emotional rollercoaster. I don't know how it's going to end. But I'm still young enough to try."

Although the celeb's obviously lost a ton of weight, she still has to work to maintain that same level of self-care and self-love that got her there. This includes incorporating different forms of exercise, eating protein, and allowing room for cheat meals.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Body image will always be important to Wilson, and she's very vocal about it. "There is a societal bias towards what society deems as good-looking. It's not right," she told PEOPLE. "You want to celebrate all body types but I also want to encourage people to be healthy."

When COVID-19 hit, this Rochester woman decided to go on the ‘Mayo Clinic diet’ – Rochester Post Bulletin

ROCHESTER Becky Hubbard married her husband, Jarrett, in a small intimate courthouse ceremony in January 2020.

The newlyweds plan was to hold a celebration later in the year, but then COVID-19 hit. And like so many other well-laid plans, the Hubbards wedding celebration was put on ice.

But unlike a lot of people, who went on high-caloric eating binges to cope with the stress, Hubbard, 38, used the pandemic as a pretext to go on a diet. It was not her first attempt.

The Rochester woman figures that she has been dieting off and on since her late teens. She tried starving herself, Weight Watchers, and milkshakes. Paleo dieting provided the best results, but like her previous attempts, the weight loss proved to be temporary.

I found that over time, paleo was too restrictive for me to carry it long term, said Hubbard, a Minnesota Department of Transportation environmental document writer.

At the beginning of the year, Hubbard tried again, hitting upon a combination of motivations that ended up providing more long-lasting results. Hubbard knew she wanted to have kids and that having kids required a level of healthiness that had eluded her most of her adult life.

Another motivating factor was the pandemic itself. Having been obese most of her life, Hubbard knew that her weight was a risk factor for severe illness or even death if she caught the disease.

Today, Hubbard can no longer wear the beautiful dress that she wore on her wedding day because its too big. She estimates having lost nearly 50 pounds, dropping from nearly 300 pounds to 240.

Hubbards experience ran counter to the experiences of many adults, who found that their waistlines expanded during the pandemic. Nearly half of U.S. adults put on excess pounds during the first year of the pandemic, making a national obesity crisis worse, a new study found.

Other benefits for Hubbard have included a lower, more stable blood sugar level. Hubbard tracks her exercises through a fitness watch and has noticed how her resting heart rate has dropped to a lower level. Her cholesterol levels have also gone down a few points another good sign because high cholesterol runs in her family history.

Hubbards experience in terms of her motivation for losing weight has found echoes in other dieters. In a weight loss survey of 200,000 consumers on the Mayo Clinic Diet, the official dietary program developed by Mayo Clinic, considerations of health were a key motivator.

About 83% of participants valued health above all other aspirations, which is consistent with global health trends post-COVID. Health surpassed physical appearance as a motivating factor by more than five times. More than 55% of participants had dieted at least six times during their lifetimes, a sign that Americans are seeking sustainable solutions to healthy weight management, the study's author said.

Its rather a unique survey because of its large scale, and that it explores the psychology of a dieters mindset, said Donald Hensrud, medical editor of The Mayo Clinic Diet. We wanted to learn more about the motivations and aspirations around weight loss, and if a stage of readiness or sense of identity played a role in a diet programs results.

Hubbard said Mayo Clinic Diet originated as a book series and now exists on a new online platform that gives you a lot more tools and features five different meal plans. For Hubbard, the Mayo diet differed from others she tried in that it not only gave recommendations but offered rationales behind those recommendations.

I was looking this time for something that would give me that educational piece about nutrition that I felt like I was missing, Hubbard said. I really felt like I wouldnt be able to carry anything forward without having that solid education first.

Hubbard said the Mayo program educated her about portion and serving sizes and the number of calories in each serving. It gave her tools to track her food intake, as well as ways to monitor the pounds and inches lost. Hubbard is on a high protein plan.

Hubbard found the Mayo diet enlightening in terms of what had contributed to her previous weight loss failures. In all her previous efforts, Hubbard recalled experiencing horrible sugar cravings'' that ended up derailing her best intentions. This time, she went through what she called a two-week sugar detox.

It took me a while for me to come off of that. And as soon as I hit those two weeks, my sugar cravings essentially went away, she said. I didnt realize I had such a sugar addiction before this diet until I went through that detox period.

Hubbard said another reason she has been successful over the last several months is the programs flexibility. Instead of imposing a restrictive, all-or-nothing eating regimen, there is room within the programs boundaries to eat the foods she loves within reason.

She can still have a piece of cake at a friends birthday party or eat a square of Dove Chocolate every now and then.

Its flexible enough that you can still enjoy some of the things that you really, really love, Hubbard said. You dont have to just give something up because youre dieting.

Ricky Hatton is just under a month away from an exhibition bout with Marco Antonio Barrera in Manchester, England, and took to social media to show off the amount of weight hes lost since March.

Heres a look at Hattons change over three months:

Its a pretty stunning transformation over three months, but not one all that unfamiliar to longtime fans of the man lovingly nicknamed Ricky Fatton for the way hed routinely gain weight between fights.

Hatton, now 43, had his greatest success at 140 lbs, winning the lineal championship from Kostya Tszyu in 2005. He did win a WBA belt at welterweight, too, and had the biggest fight of his career at that weight, when he went to Las Vegas to face Floyd Mayweather in 2007, bringing with him an army of the rowdiest, loudest, and drunkest boxing fans to ever step foot on American soil.

Hatton retired after a crushing knockout loss back at 140 against Manny Pacquiao in 2009, but returned in 2012 to face Vyacheslav Senchenko at welterweight, where he was stopped on a body shot in the ninth round and hung up the gloves for good, retiring with a record of 45-3 (32 KO).

Barrera, 48, hasnt fought since 2011, and most havent seen him fight since 2009, when he was in Manchester and got dominated at 135 lbs well over his best weight, and old by Amir Khan. The last major fight where he was really competitive came in 2007, when he lost a decision to Juan Manuel Marquez, and later that year he lost for a second time to Manny Pacquiao. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017.

To be exceedingly clear, this is not a sanctioned fight, this is not going to be a full speed fight. It likely will be something close to what we saw with Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr, or the Julio Cesar Chavez Sr and Jorge Arce exhibitions, where they do plenty enough to entertain. It will be fun for fans to get to see two legends get in there and show out a bit, and its for a good cause.

"The 'worst' type of rice for belly fat loss is white rice. It's not necessarily bad for you, but white rice is more processed, which means it will lose some of its nutrients in the processing phase. White rice also has the lowest fiber per serving and highest carbs compared to black rice and brown rice. Low fiber won't help you keep full and ultimately will make you hungry a little faster. So, if you're focused on belly fat loss, stick to brown or black rice, as those rices are higher in nutrients," says D'Angelo.

Many people talk about brown rice being healthier for you than white rice, with the main reason being that it isn't processed. Because of this, it's packed full of nutrients.

"Brown rice carries a significant amount of nutrients, mainly because it is whole-grain rice. It's high in fiber, B-vitamins, zinc, and magnesium. Fiber is beneficial for weight loss because it helps stabilize blood sugar and can keep you full longer. Brown rice can also help improve digestion as well as feed healthy bacteria in your gut," says D'Angelo.

Wild rice is a type of semi-aquatic grass, so it is technically a combination of four different types of grass. The rules about how to eat healthy and lose weight have been tweaked and adjusted so often with every new diet strategy that it can be hard to keep track.And amid all the confusion and uncertainty, we often stumble into eating patterns that do more harm than good.

It is very common for people to develop eating habits that they believe are the answer to losing weight, but can backfire, say dietitians. And that's unfortunate because following misguided advice that doesn't work can make you feel that something's wrong with you. Here are some of those eating habits that may be secretly undermining your goal of losing weight. Logic tells us that if we're gaining weight because we're eating too much, the oppositeeating very littleshould help us lose weight. That's just wrong and it's a common approach that often backfires. "Not only can this lead to increased cravings and potentially feeling more out of control around food, but entering the starvation zone can slow down your metabolism through adaptive thermogenesis," says medical board member Lisa Moskovitz, RD, a registered dietitian with the NY Nutrition Group and author of The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan. If your body doesn't get the calories and nutrients it needs to function properly, it will respond by holding onto fat cells, she says.

We know what you're thinking: "Hey, I've been told these foods are super healthy, loaded with antioxidants, filled with tropical fruits and vegetables. What gives?" Well, yes fruit and antioxidants are good, but not at the expense of too many calories and grams of sugar.

"Top these fruit bases off with nut butters and granolas and more fruit and you have a very big calorie bomb that ultimately may lead to more sugar cravings," warns medical board member Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, founder of Real Nutrition. You need to be choosey about the ingredients that go into smoothie bowls. "Watch your toppings; skip the granola and enjoy nuts, chia seeds, and coconut to reduce the sugar even more," Shapiro says.

It doesn't. And it certainly doesn't mean fewer calories. In fact, going for the gluten-free stuff often leads to eating more processed foods and gluten-free foods often contain more calories than regular wheat products. "Many people believe gluten-free equals low carb, but this is incorrect," says Shapiro. "If you want to go gluten-free, do not eat the food substitutes like bread, cakes, cookies, and chips. Eat whole foods like potatoes, beans, and gluten-free grains to see results."

Carbohydrates have been vilified so often in diet books, online programs, and food advertising that people have taken "watching your carbs" to the extreme by trying to cut out almost all carbs. Big mistake. "Yes, you cut calories and may lose water weight initially since carbs hold water in the tissues, but the weight loss typically is fleeting," say Eatthis.com medical board members Tammy Lakatos Shames, RDN, CDN, CFT, and Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, also known as The Nutrition Twins.

Carbs are fuel for the brain and your muscles. "Cutting carbs completely is unrealistic since carbs are fuel for the brain and muscles. Without them, you'll crave the quickest pick-me-up you can find SUGAR. When you give in to the craving, often you end up throwing in the towel on healthy eating completely, thinking you have to be very stringent with your diet to see results." That's not true.

This is a variation of the "eating very little" misguided habit above. You skip breakfast, lunch, or dinner in an effort to cut way back on calories. "Unless you're intermittent fasting and there's some consistency to your eating plan, and waiting long hours to eat, will end up making you so hungry that you eat back all of the calories you would've eaten at your meal, and then some," warn The Nutrition Twins.

Obsessing over counting daily fat grams is not only not fun, but it's also not healthy. "Fat is not the enemy and it's healthy to include some healthy fats like nuts and olive oil when trying to lose weight," says registered dietitian nutritionist Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim. Fat is satiating, so, even though it's high calorie, it can help you lose weight.

"The key is to include healthy fats in reasonable portions," says Dr. Young. "Enjoy 1/4 cup of nuts as a snack and use one tablespoon of full-fat salad dressing (olive oil-based) on your salad."

That's another mistake dieters make that leads to unhealthy behaviors. "Fat-free foods don't fill you up, so you end up eating larger portions of fat-free food which ultimately leads to overeating and intensified cravings," says Shapiro. "When you remove fat from foods, it is often replaced with sugar to improve the taste." Excess sugar eaten turns to fat, which is exactly what you're trying to prevent.

The low-carb obsession goes hand in hand with anotherloading up on protein. "Many people think if I cut carbs, I can eat all the protein (think meat!) that I want without paying attention to portion sizes," says Dr. Young. "I've seen clients gain weight using this approach." A better way to eat for weight loss, says Dr. Young: "Include foods from all the food groups and pay attention to portion sizes as well as hunger levels."

Eating a vegan diet can be healthy and certainly can help with weight loss. But if you don't go about it the right way, you can end up gaining weight. "We see this frequently in our practicea few servings of nut butter, several tablespoons of olive oil, and a big bowl of granola or pasta, and you may already meet your calorie needs for the day," say The Nutrition Twins. If you go vegan, you may need to be extra vigilant about avoiding excess carbs, nuts, oils, and other calorie-dense foods. And remember: You can get a good dose of satiating protein from plants. An Average Guy Shared All the Mistakes He Made While Trying to Stay Shredded – Men’s Health

YouTuber Brendan Jones has been on a body transformation journey recently, leaning down and getting ripped in 2021but his journey has been a long one, starting way back in 2016 when he first started undertaking workout challenges on the Goal Guys channel. In a new video, Jones shares what he's learned over the last five years, including the rookie errors that held back his gains at first.

The first mistake that he made was trying to do too much too soon, including making drastic changes to his diet. "Starting out as a new lifter, I was so eager to add size that I interpreted any increase on the scale as a sign that my muscle gains were coming in," he says. "And why shouldn't they be? I was clean bulking with an ever-increasing calorie surplus, and training as hard as I ever had in the gym."

While the research would indicate that Jones could expect to gain a maximum of 1 or 2 pounds per month this way, he was gaining upwards of 4 pounds each month. "My calorie surplus was so intense, my body was converting more and more of those calories into fat," he says. When he tried to counteract this by upping his cardio and reducing his calorie intake, he did lose weightbut that included a loss in muscle mass as well as fat.

Jones recognizes now that he shouldn't have been thinking in terms of bulking or cutting so early, and that cleaning up his nutrition on top of his training would have put him in a "perfect spot" to build muscle while burning fat.

Jones' second major mistake was a lack of accountability, whether in the form of a trainer or workout buddy, which he now believes to be one of the best ways of ensuring success in your fitness goals. "It's silly that even as an adult, I'm still motivating myself with the equivalent of getting a gold star from the teacher, but having that social incentive to follow through really does make the difference between skipping a workout once a week or actually getting the workout done," he says. "And those small victories over time actually add up to significant improvements in your final results."

The third mistake Jones made in the early stages of his journey was to prioritize the short-term wins over his long-term objectives. Rather than sticking to intensely restrictive diets, he now tries to build more sustainable habits that he can stick to permanently. These include coming up with go-to meals that enable him to hit his macro and calorie targets, going for a 30-minute morning walk, carving out 30 minutes each evening for a workout, and trying to get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep.

Finally, Jones explains that it was only once he started being able to recognize how "invisible" external factors were affecting him that he began to see real changes. These can be anything from the length of a morning commute, to the number of fast food restaurants in a neighborhood. Jones found that the amount of time he was spending sitting in traffic (and the snacking he would do in the car) was contributing to his stress levels and sedentary lifestyle.

"Understanding what environmental factors may be affecting you and the goals you're working towards can help you form better plans to adjust, find strategies to cope, and maybe adjust your timeline if it looks like the goal weight you set for yourself may take longer than you expected," he says. "All this is part of the process of training smart, making the right adjustments as you go, and learning from your mistakes."
