The series of Malaysian National Health and Morbidity Surveys have reported that the prevalence of those who are overweight and who are suffering from obesity among Malaysians has been on the rise.

The latest report in 2015 found that this problem has reached a high level, with approximately 1 in 3 being overweight and 1 in 6 who are obese. Being overweight, or obesity, results from the accumulation of excessive fat in the body. It generally refers to a higher than normal body weight for a given height.

You can check if you have a weight problem using the body mass index (BMI) method, which is calculated using a simple formula, i.e. BMI = weight (in kg) / height x height (in metres).

A normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, while higher BMI generally indicates higher body fat accumulation resulting in being overweight or obesity. A BMI of 25-29.9 indicates a person who is overweight, while values above 30 fall under obesity.

Dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle are the main causes for unhealthy weight gain, which in turn leads to being overweight and obesity.

One important concept to be aware of is energy balance, i.e. the energy you gain from the foods and drinks you consume should not exceed the amount of energy your body uses through physical activities.

If your caloric intake is consistently high but you dont use as much energy, the excess will be stored as body fat. Conversely, having consistently lower energy intake versus energy use will lead to weight loss as the body will cannibalise itself in order to meet this deficit.

Certain foods and beverages are high in calorie (energy dense) and low in essential nutrients. These include foods high in fat, for example, fried foods, dishes with santan, high carbohydrate and sugar foods and beverages (e.g. cakes, kuih-muih, soft drinks and bubble milk teas).

These foods should be consumed in moderation and less frequently.

With the end of the year in sight, it may be a good time to think of changing for the better with the coming new year. So set a new resolution to attain a healthier weight. Some things you can do include:

Switching to a healthy diet: The best option is home cooking with fresh ingredients and less processed ingredients. If you eat out, opt for foods that are steamed, braised, grilled or stir-fried; choose deep-fried foods less often. Avoid all-you-can-eat buffets to prevent overeating!

Cutting down sugar intake: Limit your intake of sugar-sweetened foods and drinks. Sugar is an empty calorie ingredient with no nutritional value.

Being more physically active: Accumulate at least an hour of physical activity every day, e.g. brisk walking, jogging, running, cycling or any light exercise. Do heavier exercises or sports that raise your breathing and heart rate at least once a week. Take it slow if your fitness level is poor; slowly increase the intensity over time.

Creating a new family tradition/culture: This greatly influences children later when they reach adulthood. If your family always eats at fast food restaurants, this sends a wrong message to children that it is normal. Set the right tone from young by having homecooked meals as often as possible.

Other good habits to inculcate from young include getting enough sleep daily and managing stress levels.

There are also new studies that suggest the possibility of manipulating the composition of the gut microbiota as a novel method of treating obesity. The gut microbiota is a collection of microorganisms living in our gut that are linked with how our body digests and absorbs nutrients from food.

Scientific evidence on how probiotics may be beneficial in reducing body fat/weight and weight gain shows promise. In general, probiotics are good bacteria that provide us with health benefits that also help improve our digestive system and nutrition absorption.

Therefore include foods rich in good bacteria in your diet, such as fermented food (e.g. kimchi, sauerkraut, tempeh, etc.) or cultured milk drinks which contain probiotic live cultures, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei.

Gradual weight loss is preferable for lowering the risk of unwanted health problems. Dont be too focused on losing a specific amount of weight per week/month, but set a more modest target, e.g. 5-10% weight loss from your current body weight in six months time.

There are also plenty of tools you can use to help you stay on track. Pedometers help track the number of steps you have taken in a day, and there are mobile apps to help you keep track of your caloric intake, physical activity and weight loss.

Most important of all, dont be too upset if things dont go according to schedule. Remember, the most significant weapon in your battle against the bulge is your commitment to gaining a healthy weight, and consistency in sticking to a healthier lifestyle.

I love a good detox smoothie. Ive been drinking these delicious, healthy smoothies for years and still have them at least 3-4 times a week.

Also called weight loss smoothies or green smoothies, detox smoothies are easy to make and taste delicious especially when you find ingredients you especially like.

A 3 day smoothie cleanse is easier than it sounds. Simply enjoy 2 green detox smoothies per day and a healthy meal, drink a gallon of water (yes you can include the water in the smoothies as part of your gallon) and stay away from processed foods and white flour.

I recommend you use fresh ingredients, but you can also use frozen fruits and vegetables if fresh isnt available. Just be sure to get organic both in frozen and fresh produce, if youre cleansing your body you dont want to be adding in pesticides while you do it!

A basic detox smoothie recipe contains some type of leafy green vegetable like kale, spinach, or chard, along with some type of fruit like bananas, berries, apples, or pineapple. Water, ice, unsweetened almond milk, or coconut water is often added to the smoothie to thin it out and make it easier to blend.

Other common detox smoothie ingredients include: Yogurt, celery, lemons, limes, ginger, mango, cranberries, cilantro, fennel, watermelon, almonds (or almond butter), dandelion greens, green tea, watercress, arugula, wheatgrass, avocado, spirulina, and beets.

Here are more detox smoothie recipes to try out. I encourage you to try different ingredients and find the ones you especially like, because the goal is to drink these detox smoothies as often as you can.

You cant talk about detox smoothies without also discussing green smoothies. The reason green detox smoothie recipes are so popular is because most detox smoothie recipes call for some kind of green leafy vegetable (like spinach, chard or kale), which gives it its distinctive green color.

But dont let the bright green color fool you, these green smoothie detox recipes taste wonderful and you usually cant taste the leafy vegetables. And when it comes to fast weight loss, a green smoothie cleanse cant be beat.

Examine the pros and cons of medication to treat obesity.

Are you an adult who is overweight or obese and has serious health problems because of your weight? Have you tried diet and exercise but haven't been able to achieve significant weight loss? If you answered yes to these questions, then a prescription weight-loss drug might be an option for you.

You should know, however, that prescription weight-loss drugs are used in addition to not instead of diet and exercise.

Your doctor may consider weight-loss drugs for you if you haven't been able to lose weight through diet and exercise and you meet one of the following:

Before selecting a medication for you, your doctor will consider your health history, possible drug side effects and potential interactions with medications you're already taking.

It's important to note, however, that weight-loss drugs aren't for everyone. For example, prescription weight-loss drugs shouldn't be used by women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant or women who are breast-feeding.

All prescription weight-loss drugs approved for long-term use produce significant weight loss compared with placebo. In addition, studies show that the addition of weight-loss medication to lifestyle changes results in greater weight loss than lifestyle changes alone produce.

Over the course of 12 months, that can mean a weight loss of 3 to 7 percent of total body weight beyond that achieved with lifestyle changes alone. That may seem like a modest amount, but sustained weight loss of 5 to 10 percent of total body weight can have health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, blood sugar and triglyceride levels.

Mild side effects, such as nausea, constipation or diarrhea, are common, but may lessen over time. Rarely, serious side effects can occur. For this reason, it's important to thoroughly discuss medication options with your doctor.

Weight-loss drugs can be expensive and are not always paid for by insurance. Check with your insurance company to learn about coverage for each medication option.

How long you will need to take weight-loss medication depends on whether the drug helps you lose weight and whether you have any side effects. If you have lost enough weight to improve your health and aren't having serious side effects, your doctor may suggest that you stay on the medication indefinitely.

If you don't lose at least 5 percent of your body weight after 12 weeks on the full dose of your medication, your doctor will probably change your treatment plan or consider using a different weight-loss medication.

After stopping weight-loss medication, many people gain back some of the weight they lost. However, adopting healthy lifestyle habits may help limit weight gain.

Five medications have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term use: bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave), liraglutide (Saxenda), lorcaserin (Belviq), orlistat (Xenical) and phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia).

Most prescription weight-loss drugs work by decreasing appetite or increasing feelings of fullness, and some do both. The exception is orlistat, which works by interfering with absorption of fat.

Bupropion-naltrexone is a combination drug. Naltrexone is used to treat alcohol and opioid dependence. Bupropion is an antidepressant and quit-smoking aid. Like all antidepressants, bupropion carries a warning about suicide risk. Bupropion-naltrexone can raise blood pressure, and monitoring is necessary at the start of treatment. Common side effects include nausea, headache and constipation.

Liraglutide is also used to manage diabetes. Unlike other weight-loss drugs, liraglutide is administered by injection. Nausea is a common complaint, and vomiting may limit its use.

Lorcaserin initially raised concerns because it works somewhat like fenfluramine a drug that was withdrawn from the market because it damaged heart valves. However, there is no evidence that lorcaserin damages heart valves. Lorcaserin is typically well-tolerated. Possible side effects include headache, nausea and back pain.

Orlistat can cause bothersome gastrointestinal side effects, such as flatulence and loose stools. It's necessary to follow a low-fat diet when taking this medication. Orlistat is also available in a reduced-strength form without a prescription (Alli). Rare cases of serious liver injury have been reported. However, no cause-and-effect relationship has been established.

Phentermine-topiramate is a combination of an anticonvulsant (topiramate) and a weight-loss drug (phentermine). Phentermine has the potential to be abused because of its amphetamine-like effects. Other possible side effects include an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, insomnia, constipation and nervousness. Topiramate increases the risk of birth defects.

Phentermine as a single agent (Adipex-P) is also used for weight loss. It's one of four weight-loss drugs approved for short-term use (less than 12 weeks). This group of drugs isn't widely prescribed because of the limited duration of use, side effects and potential for abuse. The exception is phentermine. It's commonly prescribed and the actual rate of abuse appears to be low.

Weight-loss drugs aren't an easy answer to weight loss, but they can be a tool to help you adopt the lifestyle changes you need to lose weight and improve your health.

Here are weight loss exercises that will keep the love handles away:

Low Belly Leg Reach - Targets corset and 6-pack area. Lie faceup with knees bent to 90 degrees, hands behind head, and abs contracted. Keeping knees stacked over hips, lift the shoulder and crunch up; inhale and hold for 3-5 seconds. Exhale and extend legs to 45 degrees; hold for 3-5 seconds while squeezing the lower belly. Do 2 sets of 10-15 reps.

Boat Pose - Sit with your feet on the floor, knees bent, hands beneath your knees for support. Keeping your chest lifted and shoulders back, engage your abdominal muscles and raise your lower legs until they are parallel to the floor (your knees should still be bent) and you are balancing on your sitting bones. If this feels comfortable, begin to straighten your legs (stop if you feel any discomfort in your back) and stretch your arms forward. Hold for 515 breaths, then release. Repeat up to 5 times.

Planks - Kneel on a mat on all fours with your hands directly under your shoulders. Stretch your legs back one at a time to come into a plank position and engage your abdominal muscles. Your body should be long and straight. Press your hands and feet firmly into the mat for support. Hold for 2 minutes, then drop back on all fours. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it. Trust us, your future self will thank you.

9. SquatsCan't get rid of that extra fat around your thighs and butt? Fret not. When you do squats correctly, you engage your entire lower body and your core.Squats are one of the best bodyweight exercises to burn fat from the thighs and glutes, and get your lower body in shape in no time. Squats are popular amongst bodybuilders and athletes, because they work (and how)!Once you get accustomed to the regular type, you can alter the speed, maximise the reps, try new variations like jump squats, barbell squats, pistol squats and challenge yourself.
