If you're trying to get rid of saddlebag fat, you're certainly not alone. Basically, "saddlebag fat" is the excess fat that accumulates on the outer side of your upper thighs. You may notice it when you try to slip into your favorite pair of jeans, and it's a pretty tight squeeze. Don't stress, though, because saddlebags are something you can reduce and tone up with just the right fitness plan and healthy food choices (aka lots of fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds). We chatted with Soji James, a life expert and certified personal trainer at 1AND1 Life who shares with us three easy exercises that will help you lose saddlebag fat fast and get into shape.

You'll need to have a small set of weights on deck in order to tackle the one-legged hip thrust with a hold. James suggests performing 20 reps per leg for this exercise and using a couch for back support.

Begin the movement by holding the weights above your hips. From there, engage in single-leg hip thrusts by lifting the weight of your body with just one leg at a time. At the same time, keep your other leg up and off the ground. After you complete 20 hip thrusts with each leg, bring both legs to the floor, and remain in the hip thrust position for 30 seconds. "This will target your glutes like crazy," James says.

When it comes to weighted single-leg raises, James says they target the gluteus minimus, which is a smaller muscle in your backside area that sits right below the gluteus medius muscle. By toning both muscles, you should see progress in your saddlebag area.

To perform the exercise, James explains, "Hold a small weight on the side of your leg. [Then,] raise your leg to the side in a controlled motion." Keep that going until you complete your reps. Aim for 15 reps per leg.

Begin the movement with the weights close to your body. Perform a normal squat. The twist comes in between squats, which is when you'll want to "pause to cross one leg behind the other," James says. Aim to do 10 reps.

During an episode of Gwyneth Paltrows Goop podcast, the 49-year-old star revealed that she stays in shape by doing intermittent fasting. Im the mother of a two-year-old, so were both having a little of this and a little of that, and do I need to be snacking as much as she is all day? she explained.

Doing a little reset kind of brings you back. It helps you be more present at the moment, staying aware of what youre saying and what youre doing, she added.

According to Mayo Clinic, people doing intermittent fasting dont eat for some time each day or week. For example, some people eat a normal diet one day and either completely fast or have one small meal (less than 500 calories) the next day.

Other people eat a normal diet five days a week and fast two days a week, while others eat normally but only within an eight-hour window each day. For example, skip breakfast but eat lunch around noon and dinner by 8 p.m.

Some studies suggest that alternate-day fasting is about as effective as a typical low-calorie diet for weight loss, as per Mayo Clinic. Losing weight and being physically active help lower your risk of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, and some types of cancer. For these diseases, intermittent fasting seems to be about as beneficial as any other type of diet that reduces overall calories.

The actress said that is worth it.

In addition to following this method, Diaz said that she also stopped wearing makeup every day. Ive been wearing make-up every day for most of my life because of work, and it was really depleting to my skin. I always had a breakout, she recalled. And since I stopped wearing a lot of it in my 40s obviously Im older, too, but I was getting breakouts well into my 40s I like my skin much better.

Avery Henry Wants to Prove Hes Better Than A Three-Star Recruit, Inspire People with Weight Loss | Eleven W – Eleven Warriors

Avery Henry is ranked nearly 300 spots lower in 247Sports composite rankings than any other member of Ohio States recruiting class of 2022, but thats only increased his motivation.

Listed as the No. 707 overall prospect and No. 56 offensive tackle in his class, Henry is one of just two three-star recruits among Ohio States new freshmen, along with tight end Bennett Christian.

Henry is unfazed by those rankings. Once he gets the chance to actually play for the Buckeyes, he believes hell prove he was underrated.

A lot of people see, Hey, he's a three-star and they don't expect a lot, Henry said. I'm going in knowing what I can do. I'm going in knowing that I'm one of the strongest guys. I'm going in knowing that I'm fast, as fast as these guys and faster. I think it helps me a lot, because nobody's ready for what I can do yet. And I think once they see, theyll all think, Wow, he should have been ranked higher.

Henry is one of 10 midyear enrollees in the 2022 class who will begin his Ohio State career this week. He told Eleven Warriors in a recent interview that he couldn't be more excited to arrive in Columbus and officially join the Buckeyes.

It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm sure I'm not gonna let anyone down, Henry said. I've been working out every day, I've been running, I've been eating healthy. I've been trying to get ahead of the game with things like that.

Henry knows his first few months at Ohio State wont be easy as he jumps into his first summer workouts as a Buckeye. One of the reasons he chose to become a Buckeye, though, is because he knows how hard Ohio States coaching staff will push him to get better.

They told me there would be days where you didn't want to come to practice or that you didn't want to be here, but they were like, We're gonna be here for you. We're gonna motivate you. We're going to do whatever it takes to get the job done, Henry said. And that's what I loved about Ohio State is that they told me the truth.

Henry emerged as an Ohio State target late in the 2022recruiting cycle, receiving his offer from the Buckeyes in October after previously committing to Iowa State. It didnt take him long to decide to become a Buckeye, committing to Ohio State just two days after landing his offer.

A native of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Henry said it wasnt a hard decision to decommit from Iowa State and sign with Ohio State instead, preferring to stay closer to his family.

My mom wouldnt have been able to make it to all my home games even (if he went to Iowa State), Henry said. So I was like, I'm gonna make a decision for me and my family, and Ohio State was the best place for me. I knew they were gonna make me grow, I knew they were gonna make me a better person, I knew all these aspects where they were gonna make me great.

While Henry was an unheralded recruit by Ohio State standards, theres reason for optimism that his best football is still in front of him.

Just two years ago, Henry weighed nearly 400 pounds. Since then, hes slimmed down to 305 pounds. That weight loss enabled his late emergence as a Division I prospect, as he did not have any offers at the start of 2021.

Out of nowhere I was in my room and I was thinking about what I wanted to be or what I wanted to do. And it came to my mind that at 400 pounds, I couldn't take care of my family. I couldn't provide in the way I wanted to provide for my future kids and my family, Henry said. In the matter of one day, I was like, Hey, I'm gonna change everything. And I changed everything in that day from eating habits to running to lifting to everything.

At 6-foot-6, Henry has excellent height and length for an offensive tackle. His film shows plenty of athleticism, which should only improve now that hes in better shape and will begin going through Ohio States strength and conditioning program.

After playing mostly against much smaller defensive linemen at St. Clairsville, Henry will face a big step up in competition as he begins his Buckeye career. That will put his skills to the test, as hell have to be able to win with technique rather than just physically outmanning his opponents, but hes confident hes ready for the challenge.

I don't care if you're 150 pounds, I don't care if you're 280 pounds, I'm gonna take you just as serious, Henry said. My entire life I've been preparing to face whoever it is, whether its the fastest guy in the nation, whether it's the strongest guy in the nation, whether he's an all-around-the-middle guy. So I believe that I've worked my entire life by running, by doing conditioning, by practicing, by working on foot speed, by working on explosive speed, by working on all these different things.

While Paris Johnson Jr. and Dawand Jones appear to be locked in as this years starting tackles, Henry isnt coming to Ohio State with the mindset of being a long-term project who will need several years before hes ready to see the field. Following a spring in which Ryan Day expressed concerns about Ohio States offensive line depth on multiple occasions, Henry will be striving to earn playing time as early as he can.

I think everyone needs to go in with the mindset that I'm going to compete right away. Because to be the best, I believe that you have to think you're the best also, Henry said. So I'm going with the mindset that I'm going to be a competitor, that I'm going to work for the left tackle position, I'm going to do whatever it takes, whenever it takes. And I'm gonna go above and beyond when nobody's looking.

In the process, Henry hopes to inspire others who want to lose weight and show them whats possible if you set your mind to it.

I would tell them that it's not too late. Because that's what a lot of people think when they're 400 pounds, or just too heavy, they think it's too late. And I'm here to tell them it's not and that you can do it and that I am living proof that you can do it, Henry said.

It doesn't need to be a huge change right away. I mean, just cut down on your portions. Eat a little healthier every day, throw some vegetables in, throw some fruits in. Try to only drink water. And in no time, your entire life will be changed around.

When Henry committed to Ohio State in October, he thought Greg Studrawa would be his position coach. Instead, hell be coached by Justin Frye, who was hired in January to replace Studrawa as offensive line coach.

Henry says that change has been no problem for him, as hes already hit it off with Frye and is excited to play for him.

I wasn't gonna let it bring me down, Henry said. As soon as it happened, I reached out, I got Coach Fryes number, I texted him, I was here to let him know that it doesn't matter who recruited me, I'm here to play for Ohio State and I'm here to get the job done. And that's what I let him know. I let him know that I'm sure we can have a great bond. Both line guys (Frye was an offensive lineman at Indiana), so that was easy to bond about.

Henry is also excited about becoming a part of the Buckeyes brotherhood and getting to know his new teammates better now that theyll all be on campus together. Even though he doesnt know them all too well yet, he already feels a special connection with the players hell be sharing a locker room with.

As soon as I committed, I had all the guys text me and say, Hey, we're here for you, Henry said. I didn't expect it, but they were like, Hey, we just want you to know we love you. And that just meant a lot. It just felt like I was cared for and that they wanted me as much as I wanted them.

In particular, Henry feels a close bond with the other members of the 2022 class, and he believes theyll accomplish big things together.

I know well be a special class, Henry said. I worked out with a couple of the guys, and I saw how much we were pushing, like we bonded right away. We were yelling for each other in the weight room, we were pushing each other already, we were already trying to make ways to meet again and to talk again and just to hang out or simple things like that. So I know the guys in my class are working real hard. And I believe well be really special. And you'll see it too.

Consuming all meals before 3pm and not eating in the evening boosts all round health and helps people lose weight, research shows.

A leading international expert reviewed 250 studies and concluded that fasting for at least a regular 14 hours daily boosts overall health.

This time restricted eating (TRE) is closer to how our hunter-gatherer ancestors, who did not have access to snacks around the clock, would have eaten.

One study suggested eating for the same period between 6am and 3pm and a 15-hour overnight fast works best with our natural body clock - or circadian rhythm.

It boosted how the body processed blood sugar and participants also lost weight, shed dangerous visceral fat around the midriff and reduced inflammation.

Another clinical trial found eating more calories for breakfast than during later meals saw women lose 5.1kg more weight over a 12-week period.

The research, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in the Netherlands, showed eating earlier also boosted healthy gut bacteria, which affects the immune system and overall health.

Dr Courtney Peterson, co-director of the Circadian Research Core at the University of Alabama, USA, said: So you might see this data and say great, I wont eat late at night.

But we usually define intermittent fasting as fasting for at least 14 hours at a time.

Time restricted eating is becoming wildly popular.

People typically eat within something like an eight to 10 hour window and so theyre effectively fasting for 14 to 16 hours a day.

She added: Data suggests that eating earlier in the day improves weight loss, glycemic control, appetite, insulin resistance and fertility.

A study by Dr Petersons team found people were less hungry when eating on a 8am-2pm regime than on a six-hour eating window later in the day.

They concluded a mechanism is better regulated appetite, rather than increased energy expenditure by early-risers.

A second study by Dr Peterson shows how a 8am-2pm eating regime boosts gene expression and hormone levels, which could explain its anti-aging effects seen in animal studies.

Data from around 80 animal studies suggests time restricted eating could help people live longer.

A third human study, also by Dr Peterson, of prediabetic men showed eating dinner before 3pm produced health benefits independent of weight loss.

The research review found changing our eating hours triggered a form of metabolic jetlag by making the body process food at a time of day it was not used to.

Eating just a couple of hours earlier in the evening was not enough to have a health benefit.

Dr Peterson said shifting the last meal of the day between three and five hours early was enough to boost health.

She said: Some of the recent studies where theyve tested having people eat in a 12-hour window and fast for 12 hours a day havent found any additional benefits.

Dr Paterson said the evidence suggests that skipping breakfast only had a detrimental impact on health if it meant participants ate their evening meal later.

One of the common hypotheses is that maybe its not so much that breakfast skipping is the issue, its that eating throughout the day is the problem.

There is data in humans that suggests grazing throughout the day increases the odds of having obesity by 57%.

After all, our hunter gatherer ancestors probably mixed periods of feasting with periods of fasting.

Prof Naveed Sattar, metabolic medicine expert at Glasgow University, said: There is some evidence that when in the day people eat might be of some importance to their health as there is a definite link between appetite control and circadian rhythms.

However it is most likely that those that eat irregularly or eat late at night take in more calories overall due to poorer appetite control and it is the extra calories that largely determine greater weight gain and related risks.

The eat-stop-eat method involves a complete 24-hour fast once a week. Fasting allows the consumption of water, black coffee, and zero-calorie drinks. Another popular method of intermittent fasting is Alternate Day Fasting (ADF), which promotes one day of fasting and one day of eating. A modified version of ADF allows you to consume about 500 calories on fast days.

Intermittent fasting and diabetes benefits

Type 2 diabetes is the outcome of prolonged insulin resistance, characterised by high blood glucose levels and several complications. ADF and intermittent fasting are proven to be effective in reducing insulin resistance and reducing blood glucose levels.

A 2019 study observed beneficial outcomes from administering 6 hours of eating followed by 18 hours of fasting, including decreased inflammation, reduced insulin levels, improved markers of illnesses such as asthma and arthritis, as well as reduced damaged cells, which could increase the risk of cancer.

The lipid profile and blood pressure levels were also improved. A small study from 2021 found that IF lowered insulin resistance in 13 adults with type 2 diabetes. This study also reported diabetes remission within five months, with a high-efficiency rate of 85 per cent. Another review reported that most of the available research demonstrates intermittent fasting is effective at reducing body weight, decreasing fasting glucose, reducing fasting insulin, reducing insulin resistance, decreasing levels of leptin, and increasing levels of adiponectin. Some studies found patients were able to reverse their need for insulin therapy during therapeutic intermittent fasting protocols with supervision by their physician. A 2018 case report involving 3 patients living with diabetes demonstrated the effectiveness of therapeutic fasting to reverse their insulin resistance, resulting in cessation of insulin therapy while maintaining control of their blood sugars. In addition, these patients were also able to lose significant amounts of body weight, reduce their waist circumference and glycated haemoglobin level.

According to these studies, IF can decrease insulin resistance and improve diabetes markers. There is, however, a lack of research thus far to determine if it is an effective measure to control diabetes or not. There are risks, too.

Intermittent fasting and diabetes potential risks

Diabetes patients may be at risk from intermittent fasting. If you use insulin or medications and suddenly reduce your portion size, your blood glucose may drop drastically, resulting in hypoglycemia. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), hypoglycemia can cause shakiness, confusion, irritability, sweating, chills, dizziness, etc. People who skip meals may also make poor diet choices, which can negatively affect their waistline and blood sugar.

A carb-heavy pastry or plate of pasta may seem more appealing if you have not eaten for hours. Bolus eating may lead to hyperglycemia and multiple complications. Animal studies indicate IF may impact insulin sensitivity and pancreas function. An experimental study published in 2020 found that alternate-day fasting for 12 weeks resulted in a rise in belly fat, damage to insulin-producing pancreatic cells, and signs of insulin resistance in rats.

To conclude Intermittent fasting can result in weight loss. It, however, is not proven to help people with diabetes stop using insulin or control blood glucose levels. More research is warranted. It is important to note that IF can cause hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia in diabetics due to fluctuations in blood sugar during and after fasting periods. Consult your physician and diabetes care team before beginning fasting. You can lose weight safely and sustainably.

Fruits are like people: They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors, and styles, and each has its own temperament.
