ASU fitness expert says new study underscores tricky nature of weight loss – Arizona State University

Posted: September 7, 2017 at 9:43 pm

Its a brainstorming process Hall foresees all mentors and mentees at HEALab employing, followed by building a prototype and testing it out. Washbon, a junior, hopes to have a solid enough plan to pitch at one of the many ASU startup competitions before she graduates.

There are so many invaluable resources at ASU, it would be silly not to take advantage of them, she said.

And you dont even have to be a student to do so.

Drew Saenz, a former student of Halls who graduated in 2015 with a degree in exercise and wellness, started a successful company called Team Up that focuses on providing fitness training to special-needs kids. Hes looking to branch out into corporate wellness and visited HEALab on Wednesday to brainstorm with Hall on ways to do that.

Hall immediately introduced Saenz to Washbon and urged them to exchange contact information. Its clear he relishes these kinds of moments, opportunities for like-minded individuals to connect, share and perhaps create something new.

A year from now, they could have a business together, Hall said.

There are a handful of other projects Hall has been working with that he hopes to bring into the fold at HEALab, including a fitness app that uses an avatar to show people how their body will change; a nonprofit that hopes to provide detox services to infants of opioid-addicted mothers; and a business that would provide insurance for preventative health rather than treatment.

As it evolves, HEALab plans to offer a monthly speaker series (beginning Oct. 11); weekly networking and idea-generation meetings; pitch competitions; mentoring and office hours; a space in which all that can happen; and more. And its all available to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public.

Thats really unique and smart because if were helping the community, it just helps us, and it helps with ASUs mission of social embeddedness in the downtown area, Hall said.

HEALab will also provide services to participants of Prepped, a free six-week program offered by ASUs Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation that began last year as a way to support entrepreneurs from underserved communities start food businesses.

The official grand opening of HEALab will be in October, but Hall encourages anyone interested in what it has to offer to stop by and check it out on the ground floor of Taylor Place, a residence hall on the Downtown Phoenix campus.

Our goal, said Hall, is to connect the dots between these enormous opportunities for innovation and the resources to make them happen.

Weight Loss Tip: How to Replace Pasta in Your Diet! – HuffPost

Posted: September 7, 2017 at 9:43 pm

Its a beautiful, sunny day here on Long Island, and after Im done writing this to you, Ill be taking the dog out for a walk before heading out for my last couple of sessions of the day. I would take him out now, but the mailman is delivering post to the complex I live in, and lets just say that my dog is not the mailmans biggest fan:-/

Now then, how to replace pasta in your diet! One of the most common food groups my clients come to me eating in troves right when we begin working together are grains. Bread, cereal, pasta, riceYou name it! And with the faulty dietary advice weve been given here in the States for the past 60 or so years, its no wonder so many folks (myself included!) have struggled with their weight in this neck of the woods!!

Modern grains are inflammatory, and lack nutritional value. FYI: If a food product has to be fortified with vitamins and minerals, you should seriously wonder just what REAL nutritional value it truly has;-)

When my clients start up with me, we nip cravings and poor food choices in the bud with three things:

1) My Food Guide, which reviews the three different phases of nutrition my clients will follow as their program progresses,

2) My Healthy Recipe Book, which provides them with 72 different recipes spanning breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, appetizers and desserts, and finally,

3) Daily accountability via the MyFitnessPal app.

You can have your cake and eat it, too, provided you either find a healthy alternative to a bad food choice, or you make your own cake with healthy ingredients, instead. And while my Recipe Book has a couple of delicious noodle-based dishes, Ill give you some free advice right here;-)

When I desperately want pasta but dont want to crack, Ill go to the grocery store and buy one of two vegetables: A squash, or a zucchini. There are a bunch of different kinds of squash, and obviously, if you get a spaghetti squash, the preparation process is a little bit different than what Im about to lay out for more traditional squashes.

All you have to do to prepare squash or zucchini noodles is to either buy some pre-packaged, already spiraled squash or zucchini (many stores have this available in the Produce section these days), or you can buy a spiralizer on Amazon, attach the squash or zucchini, and crank the handle. Your vegetable of choice will then be dispensed into a bowl or a plate below in perfect, pasta-like noodles. Next, you have one of two options: 1) You can boil the spiraled squash or zucchini (much you like you would with regular wheat-based pasta), or 2) You can saute it.

I personally go the sauted route, as I feel that vegetables are already water-based, and that boiling them can make them pretty mushy. Ill use either some organic butter, or some avocado oil when sauting, as these can both be utilized under high heat. Remember, cooking with certain Omega-6 rich oils changes the oils chemical composition, which turns it into a trans fat. Trans fat is a man-made, carcinogenic compound that can lead to various forms of cancer, heart disease, and obesity.

Anyway, after boiling or sauting your noodles, theyre ready to eat in just minutes! Just add whatever meat, sauce, etc. that you intended to, and enjoy!

Hope you found this helpful:-) Til tomorrow!

pete@weightlossbypete.com

P.S. If you feel you need more help on the nutritional side, then youre definitely going to want to invest in my Food Guide and Healthy Recipe Book!

The Food Guide lays out the three phases of nutrition I use with my Permanent Weight Loss clients. Phase 1 gets you in the habit of making healthier choices, while Phase 2 really cleans up the frequency with which you eat healthier. Phase 3 is a strict macronutrient breakdown that will help expedite the process of weight loss, all while improving your health and making your body a well-oiled machine!

My Healthy Recipe Book includes 72 recipes spanning breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, appetizers and desserts. Im constantly adding to it, but these recipes are easy to make, simple and enable you to have your cake and eat it, too!

Normally, I sell each of these books for $10 a piece, but because Im feeling generous today, you can get BOTH for just $13.99!:-)

FORTITUDE PRESS

At her heaviest Victoria Saldana weighed 28 stone and wore a 32 dress size.

The 31-year-old had been unhappy with her weight for years, but it wasnt until she nearly died from a brain haemorrhage, that she decided to turn her life around.

After her health scare, Victoria said she was "so depressed" she knew she had to change her ways.

FORTITUDE PRESS

The mum, from North Carolina, said "I looked at myself in the mirror one day and said I cant do this anymore.

"I had just suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and almost died and knew I had to make a change."

In her quest to shed the pounds Victoria, who has three daughters, came across a hypnosis weight loss App 12 weeks to Wow - Virtual Gastric Band- Lose Weight Fast.

Amazingly, these reality TV stars have lost more than 40st between them... all thanks to healthy eating and exercise

Jennifer Ellison from Brookside loses three stone in weight

The mum, from North Carolina, said "I looked at myself in the mirror one day and said I cant do this anymore.

"I had just suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and almost died and knew I had to make a change."

In her quest to shed the pounds Victoria, who has three daughters, came across a hypnosis weight loss App 12 weeks to Wow - Virtual Gastric Band- Lose Weight Fast.

She said: "I started out using the first app created by Sue and James called the Virtual Gastric Band- Lose Weight Fast.

"I would only listen at night but the pounds started to drop off.

"I also started to attend nutritional classes and learned about proteins and carbs."

Victoria said at one point she had considered weight loss surgery, but didn't go through with it.

FORTITUDE PRESS

Instead, the inspirational mum managed to drop an incredible 7st using hypnosis.

There were also some bad food habits she struggled to shake, but in the end she got there through sheer determination.

She said: "I really struggled to give up chocolate I loved it so much.

"But my weight was beginning to effect my life badly. I would struggle to even tie my shoe and would sweat just putting on my clothes.

"I couldn't walk up the stairs without taking a break."

High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets are all the rage right now and for good reason. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein and your body uses protein to build and repair tissues.

However determined to succeed, Victoria is now down six dress sizes and 7st and her health has greatly improved.

She said: "Losing weight has changed my life tremendously.

"I have more energy I want to do more things. I got my life back."

She added: "I no longer have high blood pressure, I can breathe easier and the migraines I had from the cerebral haemorrhage are almost completely gone."

And Victoria said it is only the beginning in her weight loss, which has been commented on by many.

She said: "More men notice me since my weight loss and my self esteem is back up.

"My children love it and I am happier now that I have accomplished this much. But I am ready to lose some more weight.

"My journey has been long but its not over yet."

Lisa Riley weight loss: Emmerdale star, 41, reveals the TRUE extent of her ‘baggy body’ – Express.co.uk

Posted: September 6, 2017 at 8:43 am

Lisa, 41, revealed she was left with a stone of loose skin that made going to the bathroom a challenge.

Speaking in her documentary, Lisas Baggy Body club, the TV star detailed the negative side of losing weight before she underwent surgery to remove the excess skin.

She said she felt like a balloon thats had all its helium taken out.

She continued: Everything's closer. Just been able to go to the toilet, to wipe my ****y. Well my ***y is here now.

I had to really reach round all the fat and reach down under, but it's there.

Lisa had said she felt repulsed by her reflection, so decided to have four surgeries to remove the skin.

Discussing how unhappy she was with her body after weight loss, Lisa told The Mirror: When I made the decision to lose weight, I never for one second imagined that I would end up looking like that. It never occurred to me that the loose skin would be so bad.

She continued: I was revolted by my own image, it was rancid. I was used to seeing the obese Lisa reflection, but this saggy mess was new, it was painful and it was quashing the brilliance of what I had done.

Lisa went on to start a community for people experiencing the same thing as her, and also decided to document her battle on Lisa Riley's Baggy Body Club.

The actress underwent a tummy tuck, surgery to remove the loose skin for her thighs, a boob lift and the removal of her bingo wings.

She has been left with scaring, but said it was worth it to remove the excess skin.

She explained: I had more than 60 stretch marks, so what are a few scars? I do not care about my scars at all. I am proud of them. I am happy to show them. I couldn't be happier about my body now if I tried.

Lisa regularly updates fans with her weight loss on Instagram.

She even shares before and after pictures to make a comparison, posting one in June.

She captioned the image: Some days it REALLY dawns on me how TRULY far I have come...and every day now...training hard....eating correctly....loving my life....head and heart in sync.....enjoying the person I was ALLOWED to become #smallerme #gettingsmaller #gymgirl @andrewmayers_pt [sic]

The post received thousand of likes and positive comments congratulating the star.

This Is the Real Key to Weight Loss, According to Science – Reader’s Digest

Posted: September 6, 2017 at 8:43 am

When it comes to weight loss, there are plenty of different unconventional avenues to achieve your goal. For example, you can take any of these fun gym classes.Or maybe you can just dedicate yourself to catching up on sleepthis method actually works! Or, next time you have a craving for that bag of pork rinds, maybe just pick up this nutits proven to suppress snack cravings.

As great as the legitimate methods listed above are at helping you reach your goal, its really the larger-scale lifestyle decisions that will guarantee a big change. According to a recent study published in Obesity, consistency is key.

The study included 183 overweight or obese adults and their efforts to live a healthier lifestyle and drop some pounds. The participants were entered into a weight-loss program and had their weight measured and studied each week. The study also included an assessment meeting at the six-month mark, the 12-month mark, and the 24-month mark.

The study found that participants who had higher weight variability early on in the study were far less likely to sustain weight loss by the time they hit the 12-month and 24-month marks. Reduced to a takeaway: The more consistent someoneis with their weight-loss routine, the more likely they are to make a habit out of it, and in turn sustain the losses that coincide with regular exercise/diet.

It is worth noting that the study was composed of mostly women (81%) who were mostly caucasian and from the greater Philadelphia area, so environmental conditions couldve played a role as well.

So if youre hoping to see a big change in your weight, keep up with your health goals for the best results. So drink that kale smoothie every morning on the commute to work, go for a walk every day at noon, eat a hot pepper and burn a bunch of calories at 2 p.m., and hit the gym every night right after work. (We wont hold it against you if you ditch the pepper.)

Losing weight gets personal: Combining diet and behavioral changes may help – Chicago Tribune

Posted: September 6, 2017 at 8:43 am

Over the years, Robert Kushner has seen many obese patients get "tripped up" trying to keep pounds off because they rely on fast food, juggle too many tasks and dislike exercise.

So Kushner, an obesity expert, began helping patients plan diet and physical activity around their lifestyles and habits.

"We don't necessarily put people on any specific diet; it really gets to what is their life, what are their struggles," he said. "We believe obesity care can't be inconsistent with culture, family or how you lead your life."

He recently suggested that a patient split meals with his wife when they dined out, rather than each having large portions or avoiding restaurants entirely. When the man said he was uncomfortable sharing a meal with his wife when the couple was out with friends, Kushner said to do it anyway.

"I said, 'It's a strategy that works whether you're with other people or not. . . . Be assertive,' " said Kushner. "I think people don't think about it because they just aren't raised to share."

The patient kept track of the foods he was eating, learning to avoid larger portions and fattening dishes. He has lost 15 pounds in six months, cutting about 500 to 700 calories per day.

More than a third of U.S. adults are obese, according to a 2015 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kushner, who directs the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, said he realized in the 1980s that obesity was a looming problem. He started combining diet, nutrition, exercise and behavioral changes into a plan for patients.

Since then, "what's changed is the maturity of the area, understanding more about the effects of stress and sleep on body weight, and some of the behavioral-change techniques have expanded," he said.

In addition to promoting good sleep habits and stress management techniques such as meditation, Kushner and his colleagues suggest bariatric surgery for patients with a body mass index of 40 or more and for some who are less obese but who have medical problems such as Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease. They also recommend medication for patients with BMIs as low as 30 who have additional medical problems or have failed to lose weight despite lifestyle changes.

While studies haven't generally proved that lifestyle changes are effective for weight loss, Kushner said patients often have trouble shedding pounds unless problems like stress are managed.

Kushner's approach proposes gentler, moderate changes. Rather than tell patients to cut out every unhealthy food they love, Kushner suggests focusing on alternatives with higher fiber and water content but fewer calories. (Think beans, vegetables, salads, fruits, broth-based soups and whole grains such as oatmeal.)

For the couch potato who finds exercise overwhelming, Kushner advises walking for short periods, building up to three 10-minute brisk walks daily to "boost your energy level and mood while you also burn calories."

He also suggests that dog owners walk their pet for 30 minutes daily rather than leave Fido in the back yard. Kushner found that dog-walking helped overweight and obese people lose weight in a study, and he wrote a book about it - "Fitness Unleashed!: A Dog and Owner's Guide to Losing Weight and Gaining Health Together" - with veterinarian Marty Becker.

"I call it an exercise machine on a leash," Kushner said. "It is a way for people to think about moving their body around in a fun way."

Most of his patients lose about 10 percent of their body weight (some more than 20 percent) after six months and keep it off during the program, Kushner said.

"Patients say they feel understood and more motivated as they are given personalized direction to make positive changes in their lifestyle," he said.

Kushner created a questionnaire to screen patients for traits that prevent weight loss - such as eating what's convenient rather than planning healthy meals or having an all-or-nothing mentality - traits that Kushner and colleagues found in a study to be strongly linked with obesity.

"Once you take the quiz and know your factor type, I can personalize a plan to help you lose weight and keep it off," Kushner said.

Another way Kushner hopes to help patients tackle obesity is by teaching medical students about treating and preventing it. He found in a recent study that the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination was focusing much more on diagnosing and treating obesity-related illnesses, such as Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea, than on how to counsel patients on diet, physical activity, behavior changes, the use of medications and bariatric surgery.

But Kushner said his approach isn't only about weight loss.

"We know that as little as 5 to 10 percent weight loss will improve the health and well-being of individuals and can also improve blood sugar, blood pressure, the fats in your blood, arthritis or reflux symptoms, as well as your mood and energy level."

How to lose weight with a low carb diet in two weeks – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: September 6, 2017 at 8:43 am

In the longer term, removing carbohydrates as a source of energy means your body uses fat and protein as its main source, aiding weight loss.

However, it's worth noting that the idea of cutting out carbs is very broad and not always completely helpful. Carbohydrate is a big food group, consisting of fibre (vegetables, whole wheat, pulses), starch (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) and sugar (fruit, honey, biscuits, chocolate). For the aspiring slimmer, not all carbs are made equal.

Whilefibre and some starches are generally considered good forms that provide a slow and steady release of energy, sugar ismore contentious, as it provides a huge spike in energy very quickly, which the body is less likely to burn off (unless you're about to do exercise).

There are schools of thought that argue against low carb diets.

One of the primary gripes is that it is simply not practical for day to day living. The process of converting fat to energy (when carbohydrate is not available)is much slower, so dieters can be beset by feelings of fatigue.

Weight loss news: Men find THIS type of exercise harder than women – Express.co.uk

Posted: September 5, 2017 at 6:43 am

Research has discovered men find certain types of exercise more challenging than women.

A study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism revealed that men struggled with endurance exercise to a greater extent than women.

They discovered the latter were 'considerably less tired' after completing endurance exercise.

This includes workouts such as running, jogging and swimming.

However, men were faster and demonstrated more power during the study than women.

Such qualities may mean they are better at short, intense workouts such as HIIT training and lifting weights.

Professor Brian Dalton, study author, said: We've known for some time that women are less fatiguable than men during isometric muscle tests - static exercises where joints don't move, such as holding a weight - but we wanted to find out if that's true during more dynamic and practical everyday movements.

And the answer is pretty definitive: women can outlast men by a wide margin."

He added that both men and women had 'valuable physical abilities'.

In the study, men and women were asked to flex their foot as quickly as possible 200 times.

The exercise was similar to calf raises, where calves are used to lift a weight.

Researchers discovered that women had 15 per cent less fatigue-related change in peak power, meaning they tired less.

However, the change in force applied at peak power was 11 per cent less for women than men.

Research has also indicated that men and women should fuel their workouts differently.

A 2016 study by the University of Surrey last year revealed that men who ate after exercising burned 8 per cent more fat.

In contrast, women burned 22 per cent more fat if they had food before a session.
