How Boyz II Men’s Nathan Morris Lost Over 30 Lbs. and Toned Up: ‘I Had to Commit Or Quit’ – PEOPLE.com

Posted: August 9, 2017 at 10:43 am

Losing weight isnt easy, especially if you have a schedule like Nathan Morrisdoes.

As a founding member of the iconic R&B music group Boyz II Men, Morrisbusy careerincludes a residency at The Mirage in Las Vegas and a new album, Under the Street Light, debuting in the fall.

So, when Morris, 46, decided to lose weight, he knew hed have to seriously commit to a healthy lifestyle to stay on track.

It just struck me one day, he tells PEOPLE. Ive tried many times but was never able to keep the weight off until realized it couldnt just be a diet. I had to commit or quit as I say.

Morris completely changed how he ate and made fitness a must.

On Sept. 26, 2016, I started my workouts weighing 249 lbs., he says. I was able to get my overall weight down to 208 lbs. in fat loss and then was able to add 10 to 12 lbs. of muscle.

Morris recently took to Instagram to show off his body transformation, posting a photo of himself onstage lifting up his shirt to reveal six-pack abs. He also shared how he reached his goal, which included removing sugar, starches, dairy and most carbs from his diet.

I cut out all carbohydrates except the good ones, says Morris, who now opts for brown rice and yams. I stick to lots of green vegetables, good proteins, lots of water and a good supply of vitamins.

To get that toned physique, Morris says: I stopped doing cardio for hours and instead replaced it with 15 to 20 sprint intervals walk for three minutes, sprint as fast as you can for 30 seconds to one and a half minutes. I do that off and on till I reach 15 or 20 minutes. Then I do some resistance training, either with weights or with the TRX straps.

As for his fitness philosophy? I focus not on how much weight or how many reps, but more on good form and slow speed lifting to create more time under tension. Thats what makes your muscle grow strong, says the musician. As my good friend [and Boyz II Men trainer] Tony Cress says, The more time you can keep the muscle under tension, the more you get out of the workout even if its on 6 reps instead of 12.'

And his body transformationhas helped keep his energy up during performances as well.

I feel great! he says. Like anyone, there are those days that you just dont want to get up and do it, but thats when it really counts. Thats your mind trying to trick you and once you get moving, it all goes away.

Diabetes Prevention In Children & Teens – CBS Miami

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 10:44 am

Written by Kristen Schroeder, BSN-RN, CHES, Clinical Education Coordinator in the Community Outreach Department of Holy Cross Hospital

Currently, the number of children and teens diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is increasing.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) states:

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes means you have too much sugar (or glucose) in your blood. Your body changes most of the food you eat into glucose. The glucose then travels in your blood to all of the cells in your body. In turn, your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help the sugar move out of your blood and into yourcells. Your cells need this sugar to provide you with energy during the day. With Type 2 diabetes, your body cannot use the insulin produced correctly. Without insulin, your cells would not receive the sugar they need to function and the glucose levels in your blood begin to rise.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes in Children & Teens:

Unfortunately, most of the time children and teens often have no signs or symptoms of diabetes. However, it is still important to know that the common signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes are:

If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, it is important that the child or teen see their health care provider as soon as possible.

Risk Factors for Diabetes:

Children or teens may be at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, if they:

For children and teens, the number one risk factor for developing diabetes is being overweight or obese. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in five school-aged children has obesity and this number is expected to increase over time.

Importance of Preventing or Delaying the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Teens:

Currently, there is no cure for diabetes. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes you will always have diabetes. Having diabetes can lead to other serious health problems, such as, blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and even the loss of your toes, feet, or legs. Diabetes progresses more quickly in children and teens than adults. Children with type 2 diabetes develop signs and symptoms of complications at a much faster rate. According to Kenneth Copeland, MD and director of the childrensprogram at the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, type 2 diabetes, when it occurs in youth, is a very, very, very rapidly progressing and serious diseasefar worse than in the more typical 50-, 60-, or 70-year old person who develops diabetes.

For children and teens that develop type 2 diabetes, complicationsincluding heart disease and kidney disease set in early. According to Dr. Silva Arslanian, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist, By the time theyre in their thirties or forties they may have their first eventmaybe a heart attack or stroke or something of the sort only time will tell. Additionally, the TODAY researchershave found that when children or teens develop diabetes, they experience a 20 to 35% decline in the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas each year, which is three to four times more than that in adults.

Therefore, it is so important to work on preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes in children and teens that are at high risk of developing it.

Ways to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Teens:

Children and teens may be able to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes for many years by making these small changeslosing weight, eating healthy, and getting active. Losing weight may seem hard for some individuals, but with proper instruction and support it is proven to make the biggest impact in preventing type 2 diabetes.

When it comes to eating healthy, it is important to:

When it comes to getting more active, it is important to:

Children and teens should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

How cutting down on one type of sugar can quickly improve your health – ConsumerAffairs

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 10:43 am

Doctors have long recommended that patients cut down on sugar to lose weight and become healthier. But a recent review conducted by osteopathic physicians shows that avoiding one type of sugar can quickly lead to better health outcomes.

The researchers say that cutting down on the simple sugar fructose can help consumers avoid dangerous health conditions like obesity, fatty liver disease, and type 2 diabetes. They explainthat fructose and most notably high fructose corn syrup accelerates the bodys conversion of sugar to fat.

"Fructose provides no nutritional value and isn't metabolized in the brain. Your body converts it to fat, but doesn't recognize that you've eaten, so the hunger doesn't go away," explains Dr. Tyree Winters. "Many young patients tell me they're always hungry, which makes sense because what they're eating isn't helping their bodies function."

The review examined several controlled studies which found a link between high consumption of sugar and increased fat synthesis in the liver. The researchers say that fructose is much worse than other types of sugar like glucose because it is primarily metabolized in the liver and converts to fat up to 18.9 times faster.

Unfortunately, many of the products that consumers regularly buy at the grocery store contain high fructose corn syrup because it is cheaper and sweeter than raw sugar. Winters explains how cutting out this additive can have a remarkable positive effect on the body.

"If we cut out [high fructose corn syrup] and make way for food that the body can properly metabolize, the hunger and sugar cravings fade. At the same time, patients are getting healthier without dieting or counting calories," he said. "This one change has the potential to prevent serious diseases and help restore health."

The researchers admit that getting consumers to stay away from processed foods and high fructose corn syrup is difficult, but they say that changing some common recommendations could go a long way.

For example, many doctors currently tell their patients to change their diet and start exercising heavily in order to lose weight and get healthier, but Winters and his colleagues argue that this rarely works and leads patients to failure.

Instead, they say that doctors should encourage patients to cut down on sugar and have them come in after two weeks for blood work. By then, patients willbe able to clearly see the results of the intervention, which can drive them to further improve their health.

"That single change in diet improves metabolic results in less than two weeks. Imagine the power of doing a 'before and after' comparison with a patient, so they can see for themselves that their health is improving," said Winters."Seeing those results, instead of just stepping on a scale, can motivate them to keep going."

The full study has been published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

Why exercising for weight loss just doesn’t work – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 10:43 am

Right, before we get going, a disclaimer:exercise is one of the most powerful ways to take control of your health. Not only can it prevent heart disease, strokes, metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers and cancer, it has been shown to help with depression, insomnia and stress. So exercise is good for you and you should go for a run as soon as you've finished this article.

However ...when it comes to weight loss, exercise is no silver bullet.

There are two reasons why I say this. The first is physiological. Recent studies suggestthat it just isnt as simple as doing more exercise to lose weight. Both physical activity and diet are important to weight control, but if you are fairly active and ignore diet, you can still gain weight, according to Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health, and a co-author of an authoritative study of the topic. Diet plays more of a role in weight loss than exercise or to borrow Dr Willetts words: you cant out train a bad diet.

The advice for a long time has been to eat less, and do more; many health professionals are now calling this mantra into question. The simple fact of the matter is: if you increase your levels of exercise you will need to eat more. In the short term you may get some limited weight loss results from limiting your calorific intake, but the benefits, like the method, are completely unsustainable.

Seahawks could open a weight loss retreat. Now Jimmy Graham is next. – 12th Man Rising

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 10:43 am

Weight loss seems to be the in thing for the Seahawks this offseason. Naturally, the first big story wasall about the work Eddie Lacy is putting into his weight loss. Of course, Lacy has some pretty loaded incentives to maintain his newfound frame all year long. Then we heard about Russell Wilsons training regimen. Wilsons incentive is only to play for 25 years. No big deal, right? Now here comes the new sleek and svelte Jimmy Graham.

In an interview with John Clayton on 710 ESPN Seattle, Jimmy Graham lost 20 pounds in the offseason. So why exactly would a tight end want to drop that much weight? Turns out Graham got some strong advice from a guy who probably knows what hes talking about.

When I was younger, I could carry 270 around and run go routes, and it was no big deal. Now Im getting a little bit older. I remember Tony Gonzalez told me, it was his last Pro Bowl, I had the honor of playing with him, and we were talking about weights and lifting and everything. He gave me some good gems. He said, The older you get, youve got to shave a little bit of weight. Just for your joints. Just to keep that burst and that bend in your body. And he was very, very true.

Of course, Graham spent months rehabbing a torn patellar tendon leading up to last season. He still wasnt quite up to par even then. This year though, things are looking up. When Clayton asked him how much better he feels now compared to last year, Graham chuckled and answered, almost 100 times. Take one additional year of healing. Now mix in 20 fewer pounds of stress on the knee. You have a recipe for success. And this is from the guy who was still third in receiving yards among all tight ends in 2016.

Thankfully, not all of the Seahawks have joined the new look skinny squad. Not while we have George Fant on his new eat everything mom cooks program. We love you , George!

One final note. I may not know much, but I do know this. If I read Tom Cables on a diet, its a sign of the Apocalypse, and Im packing my bags. Thats where the madness ends.

How I Got This Body: Losing Just ONE Pound to Totally Change How I Look and Feel – Washingtonian.com

Posted: August 8, 2017 at 10:41 am

Welcome toHow I Got This Body, our look at some of the amazing things the human body is capable of and the Washingtonians who put their bodies to the test. Want to share your transformation story? Email ccunningham@washingtonian.com.

Who I am:Carissa Seligman (@CarissaSweatstagram), 29, a technology consultant from Shaw

What inspired me: I spent the majority of my life dancing. I was a dance major in college, but somewhere along the way physical movement became work and exercise to me. From that point, I exercised sporadically. Until one day, I was talking with a friend and acknowledged that physical movement made me happy, but I wasnt doing much of it. I had seen some content on Instagram that inspired me, so I created my own fitness page for motivation and accountability. Im still in awe today of that community and what it has given me.

How I changed:One thing I learned through this process is that weight loss is not necessarily a sign of fitness. From the time I began focusing on my health to now, I have lost maybeone pound. Whats even more interesting than that though, is that I look verydifferent. Based on what I see in side by side photos, I can tell that I have gained a lot of lean muscle mass while losing fat. Today, I can move in ways I never knew I could. I lift heavy, run fast, and most importantly, keep going.

One thing I learned through this process is that weight loss is not necessarily a sign of fitness.

My workout plan:I started my transformation doing the at home workout Bikini Body Guide by Kayla Itsines. I have seen the most change in my body by going to classes five days a week at MADabolic in Arlington. The focus of the workouts at MADabolic is everyday strength and athleticism. I also enjoy a long run or a spin class one day a week.

My healthy eating plan:I used to track calories and go through phases of starving myself then bingeing. That is not effective or maintainable.Thankfully, I learned about Whole 30 at MADabolic, and did the program myself March of 2017. From there, I have maintained a diet that mostly follows Paleo guidelines. I do not eat dairy, grains, or processed sugars.

How I stuck to my goals:Surrounding myself with a community of like-minded people has been the most helpful tool. We push each other. We encourage each other. And we hold each other accountable.

How I feel now:More than anything now, I am thankful for my body. I used to treat my body pretty terribly because I cared so much more about how I looked than how I felt. I now feel like my mind and body are working together, and that makes me feel peaceful.

One piece of advice:Start today. Dont wait for the first, or aMonday, or until you get back from this trip or that event. If you really want to do it, just start.

This interview has been edited and condensed.
