Lori Harvey Says She Was Eating 1,200 Calories Per Day to Lose Weight Here’s Why That’s Not OK – POPSUGAR

For a while now, the diet industry has recommended eating 1,200 calories a day to lose weight. And despite a larger societal shift to denounce diet culture, this number has seemed to stick around. Many "what I eat in a day" TikTok videos show influencers eating this amount. Diet plans like Noom restrict their clients to 1,200 calories a day. And celebrities like Lori Harvey openly speak out about only consuming 1,200 calories as their way to lose weight.
In a recent TikTok video, which has reached almost 1.5 million views, the 25-year-old celeb and model talked about how she gained "relationship weight" when she first started dating Michael B. Jordan. She then went on to explain how she lost that weight and "got the body" everyone has since been obsessing over.
Heres the tea! #pilates #fitness #workoutroutine #bodygoal #fyp
"So I've been consistently doing Pilates for like the last year. I've done it for a few years, but I've been really consistent the last year. And when I was trying to drop weight, I was working out like five, six times a week, and I would even do, for the first month and a half, I would even do two-a-days," Harvey says. "I think I was consuming like 1,200 calories in a day, max. I was trying to do like meat and veggies and like minimal carbs."
Absolutely not. For starters, 1,200 calories per day is the recommended intake for toddlers. The average adult needs between 1,600 and 3,200 calories per day, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This range depends on various factors, including your typical activity level, how often you're working out, your age, etc. Even the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics notes that "if you are very active throughout the day, the high end of the range may be more reflective of your needs." Based on Harvey's two-a-day workouts, it's very possible she would be on the higher end of that range and need to be eating much more than 1,200 calories.
Your body needs a sufficient number of calories to function properly, and when you aren't getting enough, it can leave you feeling physically and mentally fatigued, constipated, and deficient in vital nutrients, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
On her social media platforms, registered dietician Abbey Sharp has openly spoken up about diet culture's obsession with eating only 1,200 calories a day and the danger that comes with it. "Cutting your energy needs to 1200 calories a day (or less!) is grossly insufficient and unsustainable for long term weight loss," she wrote in an Instagram post. Drastically restricting your calorie intake may result in short-term weight loss, but it's not sustainable in the long run. In fact, one study shows that when you go on any sort of diet at all (whether it restricts calories or specific groups of foods), they often result in even greater weight gain.
In addition to the low number of calories, let's also talk about how Harvey (along with many other celebs) love demonizing carbohydrates, the macronutrients that give your body energy. Even Kim Kardashian recently made headlines for not eating carbs ahead of the Met Gala.
These types of conversations (plus all the popular low-carb diet plans out there) could be the reason why many people believe carbs are bad for you which is maybe the biggest myth perpetuated by the diet industry. Eliminating carbs from your diet can "put you at risk for fatigue, osteoporosis, or even neurological damage," Kim Rose, RDN, previously told POPSUGAR. Of course, "anything consumed in excess could result in weight gain," she said, but if you want to lose weight, carbs which are found in tons of healthful, nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits and whole grains can actually be beneficial. Carbs act as fuel that not only helps you maintain energy throughout your day (and Pilates workouts) but also supports all the important bodily processes that keep you healthy and allow you to live your life.
It's bad enough to encourage a super-low-calorie diet and continue to promote the idea that carbs are evil, but Harvey saying her recent weight gain was "not OK" might be even worse.
"When Mike and I got together, I gained like 15 pounds of relationship weight and it was horrible, none of my clothes fit, it was just not OK," she says in the TikTok video.
For anyone who needs a reminder, it absolutely is OK for your body weight to fluctuate during different periods of your life. What's important is that you love yourself through those fluctuations and when/if you want to make a change to your diet, you do so in a healthy and sustainable way.
That said, this isn't all on Harvey. Like the rest of us, she, too, has likely been warped by toxic diet culture and convinced that in order to lose weight, she must restrict her calories and work out excessively. But when celebrities like Harvey and the Kardashians promote unhealthy eating habits, it's just continuing the unfortunate cycle that the diet industry thrives on. The hype around the "1,200-calorie diet" won't go away unless people stop talking about it as if it's a good thing.
If you have questions about how much you're eating or the number of calories you need to be consuming, consult a dietitian or doctor who will be able to weigh in based on your personal needs. If a medical professional does advise you to lose weight, the best way "is to make practical, realistic changes you can stick with for life so that you can keep the pounds off," Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, previously told POPSUGAR.
A diet filled with carbs and enough calories to keep your body working well is the best thing you can do for yourself no matter what that number may be.

Foods and beverages have been commercialized extensively. And for that very reason, millennials and Gen Z spend a lot less time in the kitchen and a lot of money on takeouts. Therefore, many people around the globe, especially in developed countries, are obese.
Lifestyle choices can dramatically affect your weight. For instance, if your peers have a habit of eating junk food, you might start doing the same sooner or later. Therefore, it is essential to change your lifestyle altogether to avoid obesity or get rid of it if youre already a victim.
If you have been procrastinating and want to start taking action, read this article thoroughly. We will explain the risks associated with obesity and the health benefits associated with weight loss.
There are a lot of symptoms that might imply you are overweight. For instance, you may start having problems in the bedroom if you are overweight. Although there are medicines like Vidalista 40 that can help you get rid of such issues. A long-term solution would be to get rid of the excess fat in your body.
There are two ways to check if you are overweight or just healthier than usual:
Keep in mind that your waist circumference wont be the same as your jeans or trousers. You will have to check your waist circumference with the help of a measurement tape.
To take the measurement, lay the tape measure midway between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your hips; hold it firmly just over your belly button.
The recommended waist measurements are:
If your waist is broader than that, you might be overweight.
Measuring your height and weight is the first step in determining your BMI. Your BMI score will categorize you as underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese.
Calculate BMI:
The formula to calculate BMI is:
BMI = weight in kilograms/height in meter squared
BMI Scores:
Note: As BMI doesnt take muscle mass into account, you may find yourself in the overweight or obese category if youre muscular.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is always pre-paid. You need to act on it and work hard persistently, after which you reap the benefits. Losing weight requires discipline and a lot of patience. We recommend that you work on changing your daily habits to improve the quality of your life drastically.
Although there are various benefits associated with weight loss, we will discuss the most prominent ones that should motivate you to get up and go for a run.
Decreasing your weight will also improve your heart health. Visceral fat affects all organs, but the heart mainly faces the repercussions.
Visceral fat accumulates around the arteries. In the long run, these arteries can get clogged, causing atherosclerosis
Losing your weight can decrease visceral fat and improve other organs health. Therefore, if you are obese, you should start dropping your weight from today itself.
Leaving it untreated will lead to other complications like heart attack, chest pain, difficulty in erection, etc. Obese heart patients often face such complications.
Men being awkward, avoid discussing them and try self medications, especially for erection issues. We strictly recommend not to do so to avoid unwanted side effects.
Medicines for better erection like Tadalafil (Vidalista 40) may interact with medicines for health complications like nitrates. Additionally, there are multiple other interactions of such pills (Vidalista 40). Therefore, it is best to consult the doctor first.
You cannot be obese and flexible both at the same time Obese people have a problem with agility and cannot move fast. This can lead to frustration while trying to go for a run with your friends or trying to be intimate with your partner.
Therefore, the only solution to these problems would be to lose as much weight as possible. Although, sometimes, blood flow to intimate parts can decrease due to obesity. In such cases, medicines like Tadalafil (Vidalista 40) can help.
Even if you are not overweight, you may experience these bed blues. A variety of factors can cause these problems. As a solution, combination treatment with PED5 inhibitors like Vardenafil (Levitra) or Tadalafil ( Vidalista 40) may be your best option.
NOTE: Even if you are familiar with any medicine, including Tadalafil ( Vidalista 40), Benazepril (Lotensin), or Enalapril (Vasotec) do consult the doctor before consuming.
You can lower your cholesterol levels by losing as little as 10 pounds.
According to one research, people who dropped at least 5% of their body weight had lower levels of LDL, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. People who dropped less than 5% of their body weight, on the other hand, had lower triglyceride levels.
Also, cholesterol is a secret killer as there arent that many symptoms of high cholesterol, but if you are overweight, you should get a blood test done.
You will notice this one. When you lose weight and start leading a healthy lifestyle, you will have a better sleep which will, in turn, infuse your life with more energy.
Having a good nights sleep is vital for survival.
Obese people can face issue that can jeopardize their relationship. In case of obese men, erection-related problems are common. Being overweight can cause a decrease in libido by narrowing down the blood vessels, reducing the blood flow. This can adversely affect the erection mechanisms among men .
If you face such issues, Tadalafil (Vidalista 40) can be one of the best solutions. Vidalista 40 can help cure such problems by increasing the blood flow in that area and improving the quality of your life in the bedroom.
Self confidence is also primarily impacted by obesity. Obese people have a bad mood for various reasons like bad health, problems in the bed, wearing stylish clothes, and so on.
Although other problems mentioned above are a direct result of obesity. But still, it can further affect your relations with the partner Vidalista 40 being a PDE5 inihibitor can help you turn it around if you face any such issue.
Although many medicines are available on the market,Tadalafil (Vidalista 40) is one of the most trusted medicines.
To get rid of all these issues, you need to lower your weight. Even though weight reduction can be complex and slow, it is one of the best pieces of advice you can follow. Reducing your weight will alleviate your mood, improve self-confidence, and make you feel healthier.

Written by Arushi Bidhuri | Updated : May 19, 2022 5:01 PM IST
Weight loss is difficult. But keeping it off is even more challenging if you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The weight loss journey becomes more challenging when the unavoidable symptoms of the disease don't let you shed the extra kilos. Like coping with the ebb and flow of your hormones since puberty wasn't enough!
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that disturbs the way your body works. Dr Preethika Shetty, Consultant Obstetrician; Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharadi, explains "Women with PCOS have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods and excess male hormone (androgen) levels. Moreover, the ovaries develop follicles and do not release eggs. The exact cause of this condition is not known. But, certain factors such as excess insulin, hereditary, and log-grade inflammation can invite this condition. This condition is associated with complications such as infertility, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, type 2 diabetes, abnormal uterine bleeding, miscarriage, or premature birth. FDA Approves Mounjaro, a Novel Once-a-Week Medication to Treat Type 2 Diabetes – Everyday Health
Posted: May 20, 2022 at 1:44 am
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Mounjaro (tirzepatide) injection to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), as an addition to diet and exercise. The drug, manufactured by Eli Lilly, improved blood sugar more effectively than the other diabetes therapies that were included in the clinical studies that were the basis for its approval, according to the FDA statement, released on May 13.
Its estimated that more than 37 million people in the United States have type 2 diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People with T2D are twice as likely to have heart disease or stroke compared to someone without diabetes, and at a younger age, per the agency.
Given the challenges many patients experience in achieving their target blood sugar goals, todays approval of Mounjaro is an important advance in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, said Patrick Archdeacon, MD, associate director of the division of diabetes, lipid disorders, and obesity in the FDAs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in the statement.
The drug is the first approved medication that targets two principal natural incretin hormones, GIP and GLP-1. Incretins are metabolic hormones that stimulate a decrease in blood glucose levels.
The approval was based on results from the phase 3 SURPASS program, which included head-to-head comparisons to the injectable Ozempic (semaglutide) 1 milligram (mg), as well as comparisons with long-acting insulin analogs Lantus (insulin glargine) and Tresiba (insulin degludec). At the end of seven different phase 3 trials that lasted between 40 and 52 weeks, Mounjaro produced superior A1C reductions versus all comparators.
Mounjaro appears to represent an advancement over current GLP-1 analogues, providing enhanced glycemic and weight benefits without an added penalty in terms of gastrointestinal adverse effects, stated a commentary response published in July 2021 in The Lancet after the publication of one of the phase 3 trials.
Mounjaro has not been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis and is not indicated for use in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Many of the participants in the Mounjaro trials also had overweight or obesity; the average BMI was 32 to 34 at the time of trial enrollment. A BMI of 30 or higher is in the obesity range, according to the CDC.
While the drug is not indicated for weight loss, average change in body weight was a secondary endpoint in all SURPASS studies, and participants lost between 12 and 25 pounds on average.
Eli Lilly is seeking approval for tirzepatide for weight loss, and the company recently announced results from a phase 3 trial testing. Participants (all with either overweight or obesity, but not diagnosed with type 2 diabetes) received the medication or a placebo over the course of 72 weeks, along with support to follow a calorie-restricted diet and to increase physical activity levels. On the highest dose (15 mg) participants had an average weight loss of 22.5 percent of their body weight 52 pounds.
Side effects reported in 5 percent or more of people taking Mounjaro included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, constipation, upper abdominal discomfort, and abdominal pain.
The drug carries a warning for a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, as Mounjaro causes thyroid C-cell tumors in rats. It is unknown whether Mounjaro causes such tumors, including medullary thyroid cancer, in humans. According to the prescribing information, Mounjaro should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
Mounjaro will be available in six doses (2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg) and will come in an auto-injector pen with a pre-attached, hidden needle that patients do not need to handle or see. The medication is self-administered one time each week and can be injected under the skin of the stomach, thigh, or upper arm.
According to a May 13 release from the company, Mounjaro is expected to be available in the United States in the coming weeks. No information has been released about how much the drug will cost.

Weight Loss May Be Associated With A Scary Health Risk, Study Says – Mashed
Posted: May 8, 2022 at 1:44 am
The2020 studypublished in the IJCsuggests that breast cancer survivors who go on to lose more than 10% of their pre-diagnosis body weight are at higher risk of dying from all causes. On the other hand, the same was found also for survivors who gained more than 10%. Accordingly, the study authors conclude that breast cancer "survivors should be recommended to avoid large deviations in body weight from diagnosis onwards in order to maintain health and prolong life."
In a similar fashion, the aforementioned study that was "presented at the annual American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting"suggests that weight loss of greater than 10% increases the risk of being diagnosed with esophageal, pancreatic, lung, liver, andcolorectal cancers as well as myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The data were pulled from two other studies that follow the health of a large number of both men and women in the medical profession over the decades. For these purposes, the subjects were followed from 1987 (or 1988, depending on the time of enrollment) through 2012. None were cancer survivors prior to their enrollment. In the majority of cases, weight loss fell within a two-year window before they were diagnosed with cancer.
If there's ever been an argument for tucking into that decadent dessert you've been craving...we didn't find it in these sources. But that's not an argument against doing it.

10 Drinking Habits That Can Drastically Change Your Weight Loss Efforts, Say Dietitians Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That
Posted: May 8, 2022 at 1:44 am
Consider this: of the 2,115 calories the average American adult consumes daily, 18% (or 385 calories) come from beverages, according to the USDA. And sugary beverages account for the bulk of our daily consumption of added sugars. That means your drinking habits can easily affect your weight loss efforts, making it harder or easier to lose, depending on what you drink. Which of the following drinking habits do you practice?
It's a lunchtime habit for so many. Soda or some other sugar-sweetened beverage. How 'bout you?
"Our food supply is already laden with tons of added sugars, and sweet beverages like soda, juices, and sports drinks are only making things worse," says medical board expert Laura Burak, MS, RD, an Eatthis.com medical board member and founder of GetNakedNutrition. "In my opinion, the only beverages worth drinking are coffee, water, and wine, or insert the ones that are worth it to you, and water is the only one you should be consuming in significant amounts every day."
But if you drink, say, a Dr. Pepper every day at work, consider how dramatically that can affect your body. A 20-ounce bottle contains 64 grams of sugar in a serving; that's 28 grams more than the American Heart Association's recommended limit of 36 grams per day. That serving of soda also carries 250 calories. At one Dr. Pepper a day for a year, you will have swallowed 91,000 extra calories, the equivalent of 26 pounds of weight.
For more reasons to avoid soda, read Dangerous Side Effects of Drinking Soda Every Day.

Drinking lots of water can have such a profound positive effect on your weight loss that one registered dietitian nutritionist and member of our board of medical advisors made it the core principle of her program and book, You Can Drop It! How I Dropped 100 Pounds Enjoying Carbs, Cocktails & Chocolateand You Can Too! Ilana Muhlstein, MS, RD recommends "water first;" drink 16 ounces of water as soon as you wake and another 16 ounces of water before every meal.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
"To me, water is really the igniter switch to your whole weight-loss approach," she says. "It fills you up, it quiets hunger and settles those growls in your stomach, it can stoke your metabolism, and it can distract you from grabbing bags of chips, bowls of dips, and anything else you like on your lips."
Your daily swing by the coffee shop on the way to work for a large specialty coffee may be what's keeping you from losing weight.
"Many people will skip the 'unhealthy' soda, but don't realize their $5 fancy coffee beverage might be costing them more calories than a soda," says board member Amy Goodson, RD, who is also a certified specialist in sports dietetics and author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook. "Many flavored coffees are full of syrups and powders that are high in sugar, not to mention the whip and drizzles that might top them. Drinking 300 to 500 calories a day in a fancy latte might derail weight-loss goals."
"This trendy habit sounds healthy. After all, there are vitamins and minerals in juices. But they still contain sugar. Twenty ounces of fresh-pressed juice can be as many calories as a bottle of soda," says Goodson. "Those sugar-based calories can add up quick! This dietitian's best advice is to eat your fruit, don't drink it."
When you swap unsweetened green tea for the calorie-heavy beverages you usually drink, you're saving significant calories. But green tea offers something more: it can increase your body's ability to burn fat.
"Green tea is packed with disease-fighting antioxidants, as well as the antioxidant EGCG, which research shows can enhance fat burning and increase metabolism," say medical board members Lyssie and Tammy Lakatos, RD, CDN, CFT, also known as the Nutrition Twins.
"In addition to the EGCG itself, research shows that the combination of the caffeine found in the tea and the catechins in green tea help with weight loss by increasing fat burning."
Don't like the taste of green tea? Try white tea. It too revs up metabolism spurring the body to break down fat for energy, says a study published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism.Green, white, or black, unsweetened iced tea is an excellent no-calorie beverage.
Coffee creamers and half & half are packed with artery clogging saturated fat.
"Depending on how light you like your coffee, creamer can add more than 200 calories per coffee cup," say the Nutrition Twins. "If you have several cups a day, cutting out the creamer can result in a two-pound weight loss per week. Try adding cinnamon for extra flavor, you'll get the blood sugar-lowering benefits, too."
Your regular beverages should provide benefits, says registered dietitian nutritionist Bonnie Taub-Dix, creator of the website and blog BetterThanDieting.com. That's why she's a fan of unsweetened almond milk.
"Almond milk has only 30 calories per cup, but contains more calcium than dairy milk, plus vitamins D, E, and A," she says.
A habit of drinking smoothies can help your weight-loss efforts or sabotage them. It depends on how you make them (or order them). Even hunger-satisfying high-protein smoothies can be calorie bombs if you make them with juices, sweet nut milks, and lots of fruit.
"Whether you order them from a smoothie shop or make them yourself at home, be wary of the ingredients, especially sugary ones like chocolate syrup and calorie-dense mix-ins like peanut butter," says registered dietitian nutritionist Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim.
She recommends loading up your smoothie with vegetables instead of relying solely on fruit.
"A weight loss smoothie should have fiber, which low-calorie vegetables like kale, spinach, carrots, beets, and celery provide," she says.
If you find it hard to make a habit of drinking water throughout the day because, well, it's sort of boring, mix it up with some sparkling water.
"Sparkling water has been shown to increase feelings of fullness to a greater extent than plain water by keeping food in your stomach for longer periods of time," says Goodson. "And sparkling water satisfies your bubbly craving without all of the extra calories."
Craft beers are hugely popular. You can tell by the number of microbreweries that have popped up in abandoned buildings around your town and the number of cases of 16-ounce cans with weird names and labels at your local beer distributor.
A regular habit of beer, as everyone knows, grows beer bellies. But that's regular beer. Craft beers tend to be higher in alcohol than mainstream pilsners and lagers. And as alcohol volume rises, so do calories. What's more, most craft beers are served in 16-ounce cans, not 12 ouncers, so you are getting four more ounces of calories per serving.
For example, a 16-ounce hazy IPA with 8% alcohol by volume may pack 300 calories while a 12-ounce Budweiser at 5% alcohol contains 145. Better to make a habit of a light beer or two if you're going to drink regularly and want to avoid a drastic change to your weight-loss efforts.
Another calorie-saving option is a low-carb cocktail: A vodka soda, for example, made with 1.5 ounces of vodka and club soda has just 120 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrates. No matter your poison, drinking a glass of water between drinks can cut a significant amount of calories out of your total Happy Hour score. And whatever you do, avoid this Worst Alcoholic Drink for Abdominal Fat.

A new weight loss drug could be used to prevent obesity. Will it work? – New Scientist

A drug called semaglutide has seen incredible results in trials to help people lose weight and might herald a new approach to treating chronic obesity - if it can overcome the challenges

For as long as Kimrey Rhinehardt can remember, she has been trying to lose weight. The keto and paleo diets seemed to work for a while. But when the weight came off, her emotional eating and sugar cravings ruined her efforts.
Rhinehardts battle to control her weight has been frustrating, but for the management consultant from Pittsboro, North Carolina, it is also dangerous. She has high cholesterol, asthma and a family history of breast cancer. Her weight raises the likelihood she will die from one of these risk factors.
Then, six months ago, a doctor prescribed her weekly injections of a new kind of medication, and everything changed. She lost more than 27 kilograms and her body mass index (BMI) dropped from 41 considered severely obese to 32, just over the threshold for obesity. The drug even changed her perspective on food. Rhinehardt isnt interested in many of the unhealthy snacks she used to love. Cravings for sugar and bread dont exist any more, she says.
This new drug, semaglutide, marketed as Wegovy in the US, was approved last year by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For Rhinehardt, it has been the boost she needed to finally lose the weight she has struggled with for decades. But for some in the medical profession, the hope is that the drug might revolutionise our fight against one of the most prevalent and lethal health problems in much of the world. Not only could it help treat obesity in people finding it hard to lose weight, but it might even be used to prevent the condition in the first place.

(WXYZ) Spring is the perfect time to hit the refresh button and start anew.
This is the time of year where we begin decluttering and sprucing things up. The garage gets cleaned out, our windows get washed, and the lawn gets a facelift. Our health and well-being should be no different. Below are some suggestions from Medical Weight Loss Clinic to help give yourself a fresh spring cleaning:
Remove temptationNow is a great time to start going through your refrigerators, freezers and pantries and removing those junk foods that are tempting to you. Out of sight, out of mind.
Healthy alternativesEating healthy doesnt have to be boring. These days, there are so many healthy alternatives to some of our favorite foods. Instead of thinking about what youcanthave, think about how you can have it in a healthier way. One recommendation for spring and summer is to replace your ice cream with low fat frozen yogurt.
In season foodsThis is a great time of year because farmers markets are opening back up and we have even more access to our favorite fruits and vegetables. Even better, when foods are in season, the flavor is better and the cost is cheaper!
Get outsideHow often do we hear people complaining of not being able to get outside during the winter? Nows the time to get out and enjoy Michigan during its most wonderful seasons. You can take walks, go swimming, play tennis, the options are endless.
