Inside Mama June’s Past 2 Months Since Debuting Her Dramatic Weight Loss – E! Online

Posted: June 1, 2017 at 2:41 am

It's been exactly two months since Mama June debuted her size four figure for the world to see on the finale of her hit show Mama June: From Not to Hotand the reality star has never looked better.

Just last week, the 37-year-old mother stepped out on the red carpet after keeping a relatively low profile after the success of her show.

Showcasing her transformed physique, Mama June attended WE TV's Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta premiere in, where else, Atlanta.

By her sider was none other than her famous daughter, 11-year-old Alana Thompson, who became a household name after the TLC series Toddlers & Tiaras. The hilarious mother-daughter duo then rose to even further fame with their hit spinoff show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

But back to all things Mama Junehow have things been since she shocked viewers around the nation with her weight loss success story?

Well, aside from her recent reappearance on the red carpet, June has been hard at work maintaining her weight loss with ample workouts and healthy foods.

Back in early May, the reality star posed for a Baywatch-themed photo shoot after losing a whopping 300 pounds.

For several months, cameras followed June as she spent almost $100,000 to have a gastric sleeve surgery, a breast augmentation as well as skin removal surgery to get rid of her "bat wings" and her "turkey neck."

After undergoing multiple surgeries, logging countless hours in the gym and maintaining a strict diet regimen, June said that she was proud to show off her new figure.

Jason Winslow / Splash News, Splash News

"I've worked my ass off, working out, getting healthy, and now I feel like becoming the person on the outside that I always felt like on the inside."

Alana added, "She looks great. I'm really proud of her."

Just weeks after making her grand debut, June made a guest appearance on The Wendy Williams Showwhere she opened up about learning how to cope with her new lifestyle.

"I guess I became what you could call a scale whore,' because I was constantly kind of beating myself upI hate to say it, but Alana kind of started to be like that [too]. So I had to back off the scale, because she's been kind of looking [at the scale, too.]"

At her heaviest, Mama June weighed 460 pounds and was determined to make a splash at her ex Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson's wedding to his new love, Jennifer.

The series documented June as she began her transformation in the hopes of slipping into a slinky, red, size four gown for the wedding in an effort to make her ex wish he had never left her side.

And while Sugar Bear definitely praised June for her hard work, in the end, the slimmed-down celeb was finally ready to move on after her ex's wedding day.

During the finale of the show, Mama June told cameras: ""My goal when I first started this weight loss journey was to make Sugar Bear kind of jealous. But it's no longer about revenge. Doing all the surgeries really took a toll on menot just physically, but emotionally."

Alana has been determined to get her mother out on the dating scene since losing the weight, but based on the hit series, it seems as though June will be dipping her toe back into the singles pond ever so carefully.

Perhaps fans of Mama June will be able to watch her finally find love again? Only time will tell.

Fletcher Cox hopes weight loss helps him become more productive – Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

Fletcher Cox hopes weight loss helps him become more productive

Fletcher Cox hopes less of him means more production.

Cox said Tuesday he plans to play this year about 10 pounds lighter than last year, when he was 320 pounds.

Im a little lighter," he said. "I slimmed up a whole lot. I did a few different things this offseason and kind of switched my body up a little bit. I got uncomfortable a little bit (with his diet), and it helped me.

"Last year I played at 320 and this year I want to play at 310, and this morning I tipped the scales at 312.

"I can move around a little bit more being a little bit lighter, but the big thing for me is can I stay as strong at 310 as I was at 320? Thats the main thing. I want to stay fast and obviously stay strong. I can be lighter and I can be where I was (strength-wise)."

Cox, the 12th player taken in the 2012 draft, signed a massive six-year, $102.6 million contract after his breakthrough 2015 season.

Cox had a good year last year but his level of play dropped from 2015, which may have motivated the weight loss.

He finished with 6 1/2 sacks, just threefewer than 2015. But during the eight-game stretch from the first Redskins game through the Bengals game he had no sacks and just 12 solo tackles. The Eagles went 2-6 duringthat stretch, falling out of the playoff hunt.

Cox still made the Pro Bowl, which made him the Eagles' first defensive player to make consecutive Pro Bowls since Asante Samuel in 2008 and 2009.

But for all his individual accolades, Cox has still played in just one playoff game in his five NFL seasons, a loss to the Saints after the 2013 season.

I went to the Pro Bowl, so I dont think that was a down year," he said. "I had a solid year. It could have been better and as a team we could have been better. Thats what we use this offseason for, to go out and get better.

"I like everything this organization is doing and I think this organization is moving forward. I love everybody (they acquired), especially Derek Barnett. I just go out and watch the kid. I have been here the whole offseason, and this kid has a lot of energy and hes going to be a big help for us."

TEMPE, Ariz. -- There are no grades for floor mopping or toilet cleaning at the NFL combine.

But Krishawn Hogan has done them both, right there at the Indianapolis Convention Center, which connects with Lucas Oil Stadium, the place draft hopefuls gather each year to try to show they have what it takes to make it on the game's biggest stage.

Hogan was a long way away from that back in 2013, when he failed in a bid to make it at NCAA Division II Walsh University in Ohio. He came home to Indianapolis, his dream of playing football still flickering, and got a job as a janitor at the convention center, working the midnight to 8 a.m. shift.

During the day, he worked at an inflatable indoor playground.

The NFL was a long way away.

So when Hogan walked into the arena this year, the only player from an NAIA school invited to the combine, he couldn't help thinking of those hours pushing brooms.

"It was pretty surreal just walking through the buildings," he said. "I just felt blessed the whole time to be there."

Browns: Top pick Garrett still not practicing BEREA, Ohio -- Myles Garrett wore a baseball cap at practice Wednesday instead of a helmet.

The No. 1 overall draft pick remains slowed by an injury the Browns insist is not serious but are choosing to keep secret.

Garrett stayed on the side and worked with a trainer while his Cleveland teammates continued their offseason workouts without the rookie defensive end. Browns coach Hue Jackson did not specify Garrett's injury or why he was kept out of practice.

"It's nothing major," Jackson said. "So I think we're right where we need to be."

Jackson said Garrett did practice on Tuesday, when the workout was closed to the media, but it's not known how much he participated.

"I know you guys want to see him in the worst way," Jackson told reporters. "He looked like Myles Garrett. Big, fast, tough. He's everything we think he is."

Last week, Garrett described the injury "as a little nick" and said the Browns were holding him out of practice as a precaution. He also said he expected to be "full tilt" for this week's workouts. The 6-foot-4, 272-pounder was slowed by an ankle injury during part of his junior season at Texas A&M, but Jackson said it's not related to his new ailment (see full story).

Vikings: Cook signs to put teams entire class under contract EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed their second-round pick, running back Dalvin Cook, to put their entire rookie class under contract one month after the draft.

Cook's deal was done Wednesday. He was the last of the team's 11 draft picks to sign.

Cook was the 41st overall selection out of Florida State, the third running back off the board. He finished his career with the Seminoles as their all-time leading rusher with 4,464 yards and 46 touchdowns over three seasons.

Cook will compete with Latavius Murray and Jerick McKinnon for carries. Speaking to reporters after practice, a few hours before he signed his contract, Cook said he's had his "rookie moment" in adjusting to the speed of the defense during organized practices with the full team, which began last week.

Texans: Report details Mumphery punishment at MSU EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Police documents say Houston Texans wide receiver Keith Mumphery was expelled from a Michigan State graduate studies program last year for a sexual misconduct violation.

The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday that Mumphery was accused of sexually assaulting a student in March 2015. A campus police report says they agreed to meet in her dorm room, but contains conflicting accounts of what happened and whether it was consensual.

Prosecutors opted not to file charges and the woman didn't return contact.

Mumphery has played two seasons with the Texans. The Texans declined comment in a statement to The Associated Press beyond saying team officials are "gathering information." Mumphery's agent, Kennard McGuire, declined comment.

The incident is the third case of alleged sexual misconduct involving several current and former Michigan State players during the past three years. One player has been charged.

They call it the Pony set. It's an apt name.

It's the moniker of the Eagles' two-running back formation when 5-foot-8, 176-pound rookie Donnel Pumphrey and 5-foot-6, 190-pound veteran Darren Sproles share a backfield.

"It creates a lot of mismatches because we have great wideouts on the field as well as Carson Wentz back there," Pumphrey said.

"With both of us back there, we can just do crossing patterns and keep the linebackers all mixed up. Even when we motion out, it's going to most likely be a linebacker on us and it's a mismatch on its own."

The Pumphrey-Sproles comparisons are unavoidable, yet understandable. While the two don't have identical body types, they're both small and it seems like Pumphrey will have a Sproles-like role with the Eagles.

Sproles, 33, previously has talked about retiring after the 2017 season, so the fourth-round pick could be his heir apparent. Pumphrey has also been working on returning kicks and punts during OTAs, something he didn't do much of in game action in college and he's looked comfortable doing it. It's yet another thing he can learn from Sproles.

"It's honestly been unbelievable to play under his wing, learn different stuff, different aspects of the game with him," Pumphrey said.

As the current round of OTAs began in the rain on Tuesday, the Pony set was scratched momentarily because Sproles was away for a family matter. It will return, but in the meantime, the Eagles have been showing the various ways they plan on using their new versatile weapon.

That means, in addition to his duties as a running back, Pumphrey will be used out of the backfield as a receiver and in the slot. On Tuesday, the Eagles stacked him as the back end in a bunch formation, almost hiding him behind bigger receivers.

"Pump is so laterally quick," Ertz said. "You see it out there. His change of direction is incredible. Obviously, the coaches are going to have unbelievable pieces to use in this offense between him, Sproles, myself, we added guys like Alshon (Jeffery) and Torrey (Smith). Hopefully the middle of the field will be a little more spaced out than in years past. So we're excited to use him in different ways.

"I mean, you put Sproles and him on the field, how is a defense going to match up? Are they going to play base, will they play dime? Sproles has obviously shown he can run between the tackles, we'll see how much Pump can do in the run game. I think guys are excited to see especially when the pads go on, live bullets, to see that lateral quickness."

Ertz said the Pony set will create problems for defenses similar to those occurring when he and Trey Burton come out in the Eagles' two-tight-end set. Which defense will teams choose to use?

And then Ertz questioned what teams would do if the Eagles come out with 176-pound Pumphrey next to 250-pound LeGarrette Blount in the same backfield. If Pumphrey is a pony, Blount is athoroughbred stallion; but each serves his own purpose in the offense.

"We've got a lot of chess pieces, so it's up to Doug (Pederson) and Frank (Reich) and [QB coach John DeFilippo] to kind of make the most of this," Ertz said. "But that's the good thing, they've shown they can do it in the past and we trust them as offensive players that they'll put us in situations to be successful."

The weight gain plan – Mumbai Mirror

Posted: June 1, 2017 at 2:40 am

What do you do when youre on the other side of the battle against the scale? Heres how to pile on the pounds safely.

Two weeks ago, Disha Selarka was complimented on being really pretty, but too skinny, the 20-year-old student and freelance image consultant from Borivili tells us. She has been underweight since she was a toddler, and growing up, had a host of unflattering nicknames to contend with. Ive been called a twig, a stick...even sukha bombil (dried Bombay duck), Selarka tells us, sharing that, over time, shes learnt not to take the comments to heart. Selarka weighs 40.10 kg and is 54 tall. That makes my Body Mass Index (BMI) 15.5; ideally, it should be between 18.5 and 23; which means I need to put on a good eight kilos, she says.

Vashi resident, 38-year-old Ramkumar Sundaram assumes that his weight issue is a congenital problem. Hes 56 tall and weighs 68 kg. In his twenties, Sundaram tried hitting the gym, working with dumbbells, gulping protein mixes and shakes and just overeating. Nothing worked, he tells us. What keeps it down?

Genetically speaking, deficiency of ghrelin or the hunger hormone, can make it difficult to gain weight, says Dr Pratit Samdani, Consultant Internal Medicine at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre. Fitness coach Nawaz Modi Singhania adds, A small minority of people struggle to gain weight, and theyre usually envied. However, the reality is that inch and weight gain is harder to accomplish than inch and weight loss. Being underweight can come with a multitude of health problems. It could also be caused by health conditions like hyperthyroidism, so the first step is to seek medical advice.

Food, rest and massages

Juhu based dietician Sheela Tanna recommends that those who want to gain weight, include more carbohydrates (whole grains, pasta, bread and roti) and tubers like potatoes in their diet as these convert into fat and sugar, and serve to energise. "Also, consume dairy, because it helps build stronger bones, and helps with muscle gain.

She adds, Eat small meals through the day as this helps in assimilation and proper digestion. Massage is also advisable as this improves blood circul ation, improving digestion, which helps with fat deposition.

Compact servings of nutrition and calories

Health, wellness and fitness professional Kajal Khaturia cautions, Often, those who want to gain weight load up on junk food, so Ive had many clients come to me with this problem, and when tested, we found their lipid profile was haywire.

Khaturia therefore emphasises, Begin at the root of the problem. Is your low weight genetic or do you have a high metabolic rate? If your body burns calories from food fast, then Id recommend having many meals a day and keeping a little gap between meals these meals should be a combo of carbs, proteins and fats. For example, one may have vegetable paratha with a bowl of curd; wherever possible, opt for starchy vegetables, tubers and roots. Another great option is masala dosa as its a nutritive cereal and pulse combination. Fleshy fruits like bananas, chikoos and mangoes are good, healthy carbs. And, switch from wheat flakes to corn flakes, as the latter will not satiate, and youll be hungry again soon. Your calorie count should always be stepped up gradually.

Shake it up

Though it may seem counterintuitive, exercise is essential for weight gain but Khaturia points out, Where I may tell someone whos trying to lose weight to jog four times a week, to gain weight, my advice would be to cut down on cardiovascular workouts like jogging and concentrate on weight training, as this will help build muscle mass.

If you resistance train correctly, you will achieve volume, size and bulk in the correct way and in the correct places, says Singhania who recommends weight training every alternate day. I prefer compound weight training exercises that target many muscles all at once. The trick is to use heavy weights and do fewer reps, she adds.

VERIFY: Does tequila have health benefits? – KHOU

Posted: June 1, 2017 at 2:40 am

There have been posts and videos popping up on social media touting the medicinal benefits of the clear liquor, saying it helps you sleep, lose weight, and can even cure a common cold. But are those claims true?

There have been posts and videos popping up on social media touting the medicinal benefits of the clear liquor, saying it helps you sleep, lose weight, and can even cure a common cold. But are those claims true?

Our sister station,KARE11, spoke to two expert sources on the benefits of tequila:

Phelps brought up agave, a cactus varietal that is the main ingredient in tequila. Some experts tout its ability to replace sugars, aiding in weight loss. Agave's anti-inflammatoryand immune-boosting properties have also been cited, and the website sheknows.com claims the Aztecs used agave syrup to treat wounds because of its antibacterial properties. Three years ago, the American Chemical Society did report that a sweetener created from the agave plant could help certain people with diabetes lose weight.

So if tequila is made of agave it has to be good for you, right? Not so much, said Vander Laan.

"There's not even that type of sugar left in it because it's fermented out," Vander Laan said, talking about the process of distilling agave into tequila.

Does it really help you sleep?

"It's a depressant, so it might help you actually get to sleep, but I'm not sure it's that restful sleep," asserted Vander Haan. The National Sleep Foundation agrees, saying alcohol interrupts your circadian rhythm, blocks REM sleep and can aggravate breathing problems.

How about weight loss? "An ounce and a half of hard alcohol is about 80 calories," says Vander Haan, not even mentioning the sweet, caloric stuff tequila is frequently mixed with.

And that whole dead about curing colds? "They used to use it back in the 30's, back when you could order all sorts of crazy things for the Sears catalog, right? No, there's no evidence to support that," Vander Haan insisted.

At this point, we can safely say KARE 11 has verified that tequila is NOT good for you, despite some of the claims you may have seen on social media. Vander Laandoes say that moderate alcohol use of any variety may have some positive heart benefits for some, but alcohol is also hard on your liver, increases the risk of certain cancers, and can be addictive.

If you're going to drink tequila this Cinco de Mayo, Vander Haan says to do it in moderation, and if you're not a tequila drinker.... don't start swilling it for your health.

Study shows dramatic shift in gut microbes, their metabolites after weight loss surgery – Arizona State University

Posted: May 30, 2017 at 7:41 pm

May 30, 2017

Obesity, already a global epidemic, is on the rise. Over one third of the U.S. population is currently afflicted, according to the Centers for Disease Control and the monetary costs alone are approaching $150 billion dollars annually. Causes of the epidemic include changing diets and greater sedentism, though environmental factors may also contribute.

A new study compares the two most common surgical therapies for obesity, known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). The results demonstrate that RYGBthe more aggressive of the two surgeries produces profound changes in the composition of microbial communities in the gut, with the resulting gut flora distinct from both obese and normal weigh patients. The results are likely due to the dramatic reorganization of the gut caused by RYGB surgery, which increases microbial diversity. The new research paves the way for new diagnostics and therapies for obesity. Microbial diversity in the human gut: The four images indicate the degree of microbial diversity in the gut in normal patients as well as in obese patients before and after undergoing two types of weight-loss surgery. The normal human gut has a high degree of microbial diversity, considered important for the maintenance of health. Obese patients have lost much of this diversity and while laparascopic band surgery effectively leads to weight loss, the low microbial diversity condition remains. By contrast, gastric bypass surgery results in the restoration of microbial diversity in the gut, though the composition of microbes is distinct from both normal weight and obese patients. Graphic by Jason Drees for the Biodesign Institute Download Full Image

The gamut of adverse health effects associated with obesity is broad, including such devastating illnesses as type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke and certain forms of cancer. Patients often suffer loss of mobility, social isolation and inability to work. Currently bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity, in terms of significant and sustained weight loss.

In the new study, appearing in the current issue of the Nature Publishing Group journal International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), Zehra Esra Ilhan, Rosa Krajmalnik Brown and their colleagues at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State Univesity, along with researchers from Mayo Clinic, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, explore microbial communities in the human gut following RYBG and LAGB surgeries.

The results confirmed theirearlier researchwith a smaller sample size, showing that in the case of the more aggressive and irreversible RYGB surgery, microbial communities underwent a profound and permanent shift following weight loss. The resulting post-surgical composition of gut microbes observed for RYGB patients was distinct from both normal weight and obese patients, and displayed the high microbial diversity associated with a healthy gut.

The current study also applied the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to examine the metabolome a composite of the metabolites produced by the various microbes in the gut, again noting significant alterations as a result of the RYGB procedure. In the case of the alternate treatment, LAGB, changes in the gut microbiota were mild and accompanying weight loss was less pronounced.

This is one of the first studies to show that anatomically different surgeries with different success rates have different microbiome and microbiome-related outcomes, noted Ilhan, lead author of the new paper. Further, the results indicate that correction of obesity tends to improve related metabolic conditions, including diabetes and high cholesterol.

One of the key findings of the paper confirms what we had already observed inearlier research. RYGP gastric bypass had a huge effect on the microbial community structure, Krajmalnik-Brown said. This fact may have profound implications for both the understanding and management of obesity.

The millions of bacterial microbes in the human gut perform a vast range of critical functions in the body and have even been implicated in mood and behavior. Among their critical responsibilities are the micro-management of nutrients in the food we digest, hence their central place in the regulation of body weight.

A tell-tale indicator of pathology in obese patients has been found in the gut, where a markedly lower diversity of microbial communities is observed. As Krajmalnik-Brown explains, diversity of gut microbes is essential to good health. Diversity is good because of what we call functional redundancy, she said. If you have 10 workers that can do the same job, when one of them gets sick, the job still gets done.

Low microbial diversity in the gut, by contrast, is associated not only with obesity but a range of ailments including inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and autism. (Earlier research by Krajmalnik-Brown and her colleagues demonstrated diminished diversity in thegut microbiome of autistic childrenand in a more recent study, improvement in the symptoms of autism was demonstrated followingtransplantation of beneficial microbes.)

Competition in diverse microbial networks in the gut helps provide a system of checks and balances. Should diversity fall, a delicate democracy can be shattered and tyranny may prevail, as populations of microbes like Salmonella or Clostridium difficile usually subsisting at low levels in the gut expand and take over.

The study sought to explore long term changes in the gut in patients who had undergone either of the two surgeries at least 9 months prior, comparing them with normal weight and pre-bariatric obese patients. While the reasons for the sharp disparity of results between RYGB and gastric banding are not entirely clear, the results indicate that simply reducing the size of the stomach through gastric banding is not sufficient to induce the large changes in microbial communities observed for the RYGB group.

One hypothesis the authors put forward is that RYGB alters the physiology of the gut to such a degree that microbes formerly unable to survive conditions in the obese gut are able to flourish in their surgically-modified surroundings.

One of the things we observe from the literature is that the oral microbiome community composition is very similar to the colon microbiome composition after bariatric surgery, Ilhan said. Youre giving new microbes a chance to make it. Most of the species are acid sensitive, which supports the idea that changes in stomach pH levels may permit these microbes to survive and make it to the colon.

According to John DiBaise, a gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale and co-author of the new study, These new data on microbial community structure and function significantly expand our knowledge on how the microbiome is associated with weight loss following bariatric surgery.

While it seems clear that RYGB surgery produced permanent changes in bacterial communities in the gut, the resulting microbial community may also act to help maintain weight loss over the long term. Experiments have shown that transplantation of beneficial microbes from mice that have undergone RYGB surgery into obese mice induces dramatic weight loss. While these results have yet to be replicated in humans, the findings open the door to the eventual use of healthy microbial communities to treat obesity.

Although the RYGB surgery has been quite successful for many patients suffering from morbid obesity, it is a serious, invasive procedure that is not without risks. Further, some patients are not successful and regain the weight they have lost post-surgery, perhaps because they lack the favorable microbes necessary for permanent weight loss.

As Ilhan said, a probiotic that would replace surgery would be great. Another positive outcome would be if we can find a microbial biomarker that will identify the best candidates for surgery and sustained weight loss.
