The best teas for weight loss, insomnia and immunity – Chicago Sun-Times

Store aisles are full of herbal brews claiming to do everything from boosting your immunity to lowering your weight. While there is not a great deal of science supporting benefits, some studies show promise.

Heres the skinny on teas that say theyll help you lose weight:
Green, white and oolong tea (all of which come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis) have chemicals called catechins, which have been shown to impact fat metabolism in the lab and to lower body weight and fat mass in animals. Green tea is especially rich in catechins.
Rooibos tea contains a chemical called aspalathin, which a 2015 study found improved fat metabolism.
Peppermint tea may help you eat less. Studies have shown the smell of peppermint can help curb appetite.

Anxiety and insomnia
Some herbal teas may reduce anxiety and improve sleep:
Chamomile tea may be calming. In a 2009 study, chamomile extract helped people with generalized anxiety disorder.
Kava tea has been suggested for the management of anxiety, but should be used with caution, as kava supplements have been linked to risk of severe liver damage, according to the US FDA.
Valerian tea before bed could help you get a better nights sleep, according to some research.
Immune function
Some herbs often found in teas are said to boost immune function.
Echinacea tea has been touted to boost immunity. Echinacea is being actively studied for the treatment of upper respiratory infections and for its potential effects on the immune system. Results have been mixed so far, but its promising for treating colds.
Ginseng tea may be a good choice this season. Some evidence shows American ginseng might help prevent colds and flu, or at least improve symptoms.
Reading the tea leaves
Functional teas are required to carry labels saying, these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, but scientists studying the compounds in these warming brews are finding some promising, if not yet conclusive, results. Meanwhile, theres no doubt that the caffeine in a cup of tea can pick you up, the steam from a hot cup of floral or minty herbal brew can make you feel relaxed, and the hot liquid can loosen mucus and warm away the chills.

One of the most unfair parts of trying to lose weight is that everyones body is different.
The speed of your metabolism can vary widely. Some people have very intense food cravings throughout the day, while others have cravings that are infrequent and go away rather quickly. Some people naturally eat their food slowly, and as a result, they often consume fewer calories without even trying. Others, like me, chow down quickly and dont give their stomachs enough time to know whether theyre full.
Lets dive into how experiences vary and your individual options.
Food cravingsScientists and other health professionals have long wondered whether food cravings were linked to nutrient deficiencies in our bodies.It makes sense from a logical perspective. If certain people experience cravings frequentlyregardless of whether theyre actually hungrytheir bodies must be crying out for some sort of vitamin or nutrient thats in short supply.
However, food cravings aren't nearly as simple as we might like them to be. For instance, women are up to twice as likely to have food cravings as men. They're also more likely to crave sweet foods with loads of added sugar. This comfort food often provides little nutritional value and instead offers a bunch of empty calories. If our bodies really are crying out for nutrients, this kind of food is definitely not what they'd need.
Food as a natural rewardIn 2015, I wrote about how important it is to consider the mental aspect of weight loss, especially because 90 percent of Americans dont even consider the power of their brains when it comes to their diet. What if more of us made a concerted effort to get our minds right before we start a diet? It would likely mean a lot more people would reach their fitness goals, as opposed to the97percent of us who fail.
The first step has to be reprograming our minds in terms of how we reward ourselves. Eating food causes the release of dopamine in our brains, and dopamine is important to reduce our stress levels, anxiety and depression. It makes sense that meals get attached to this, because when we provide our bodies with the proper fuel, it's easier for them to go about their usual work of providing energy to keep us going. However, were all capable of going overboard here, especially when were in a bad place mentally.
StressStress and eating are part of the self-perpetuating cycle of weight gain. On average, food can (temporarily) reduce our stress levels, but overeating can increase our weight gain, thus increasing our stress. If we try to fight our cravings that are telling us to "eat more; youll feel better," we either end up giving in and doing it, or we deny ourselves this dopamine release, causing us to feel even worse!
The answer isnt to do either of these things. We absolutely have to deal with our own stress, but we have to find creative ways to overcome the feelings stress creates. The facts about stress and eating are this: Stress does induce cravings. People who are under stress eat significantly more calories than those who are not stressed. In addition, women generally experience more stress than men and have more health symptoms related to their stress.
Different levels of stress and different ways of dealing with itDopamine is a valuable chemical our bodies produce, but we have to make sure it's linked to more than just the food we eat. Food is the easiest way, but if you're willing to be creative, there are other ways to up your mood. Go participate in your favorite sport and break a sweat, knowing that the so-called "runner's high" isn't limited to running. It's really the result of dopamine released by our brains while we're performing any strenuous exercise.
However, there are other avenues, too. Go to that new restaurant you've been wanting to try. Buy yourself a new pair of shoes or the book you've been wanting. Set goals and benchmarks for yourself. Maybe if you plan on losing 15 pounds, you give yourself a small reward when you reach your 5-, 10- and 15-pound goals. It's all up to you, but having the treat to look forward to does help. If you really want to get serious about rewiring your brain this way, TED Talks are a great place to start.
Weight loss and circadian rhythmsIve talked before about the benefits of intermittent fasting, but this health article discusses how important it could be to do the opposite. The article discusses how some people can avoid those pesky late-night cravings by actually frontloading their meals earlier in the day. Which one is right or wrong? It all comes down to the individual. Heres what I hope youll keep in mind:
Some people do great with intermittent fasting and eat less all day long.
Other people do great skipping breakfast and lunch, but cant stop eating late at night.
Others simply do best if they eat meals at regularly scheduled times, but choose to focus on eating a healthier diet and consuming fewer calories.
In the end, no one can tell you which is best. You have to experiment and see what works for you.
If youre really struggling, spend a couple of weeks on each method. Write everything down, and I mean everything! Chart when you eat, how much you eat, when you have cravings and how bad those cravings are on a scale of one to 10. Everything. Then, you can start to assess! Yes, it does take a while, but youve got your whole life ahead of you, so why not take a little time to figure it out?

CHICAGO (AP) Heavy seniors who want to lose pounds safely shouldnt skip the weight machines or the treadmill, new research suggests.
Experts have worried about recommending weight loss to older, obese people because it speeds up bone and muscle loss, increasing the danger of falls and broken bones. Losing weight plus aerobic activity and strength training improved their health more than dieting plus either type of exercise alone.
The results suggest a combination of exercises is the safest approach, and may have big implications for helping people continue to live independently as they age. Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program for people 65 and older, now covers behavioral therapy for weight loss and some plans offer gym memberships.
It is the worst of both worlds, being fat and frail, said Dr. Dennis T. Villareal of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who led the study under a grant from the National Institute on Aging.
More than a third of Americans ages 65 and older are obese. Obesity can make the elderly vulnerable to medical problems, but losing weight can worsen frailty by hastening muscle and bone loss.
The study, published by the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 141 older obese people who were randomly assigned to a diet-and-exercise program. They scored in the frail range on a standard test used with seniors.
One group did aerobics such as treadmill walking. Another did strength training with weight machines. A third group did aerobics and strength training. All exercised three times a week.
A control group didnt diet or exercise and only attended monthly nutrition classes.
After six months, all the groups except the do-nothing group had lost weight, about 19 pounds on average.
The combination and aerobics-only groups built their ability to use oxygen most efficiently, which can increase endurance. The combination and strength-only groups preserved the most lean mass and bone.
The health differences showed up in follow-up testing where participants did a series of nine tasks including picking up a penny, standing up from a chair and climbing stairs.
Most improved was the combination group with a 21 percent average increase in scores compared to 14 percent improvement in the aerobics-only and strength-only groups.
Its never too late to change lifelong unhealthy habits, Villareal said.
Minor injuries such as knee pain and shoulder pain among the exercisers were not enough to outweigh the benefits, he said.
The study excluded people with severe heart disease and other serious health problems, so the results apply only to people well enough to start an exercise program.
You get more bang for your buck with doing both types of training, especially when it comes to improving frailty scores, said Dr. Lawrence Appel of Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in the study.

If you want to slim down even more, cut out whole-grain bread, swapping it for vegetables for a week instead. One example would be exchanging a tuna sandwich for a tuna salad.

This is an easy way to remove a couple of hundred calories from your daily diet without missing out on essential or healthy food.
