Yvonne Culleton: Keeping a Food Diary in the battle for weight loss – Leinster Express

No 1- Food diary
Nowadays there are so many quick fixes and fad diets, which yes will help you lose weight but will you maintain it???
90% of the time the answer is NO! See if we lose a lot of weight quickly we lose some very important and essential lean tissue (muscle), which controls our metabolic rate (rate in which we burn calories). Weight regained after the diet could be fat tissue which is a lot lazier. For every 1lb of lean tissue we burn 50 calories at rest but for every 1lb of fat we only burn 4 calories. So it is pretty lazy!!
Even if you dont over-eat you could regain weight anyway because of the greater the proportion of lazy fat tissue in your body, because your metabolism is slowed and because lost fluid will replace itself.
The only way to maintain weight loss and adapt and keep a healthy lifestyle is a slow and steady weight loss, and take baby step with changing things in your diet, a drastic exclusion of too many things will deffo set you up for failure.
Realistically we can only lose about 1-2lb of actual fat per week, the rest is fluid. Maybe the first few weeks if you have a lot to lose you might lose more but that will stabilise after a few weeks.
A very useful tool if your goal is weight loss would be to record a food diary. Maybe 5-7 days and just have a sheet of paper with you, it doesnt have to be anything fancy!
Record everything from water consumption, a lot of uncounted calories can be consumed in liquid form so record all drinks, if you have sugar in your teas/coffees, portion size of each meal and snack, how you are feeling if you reach for that sugary treat. Some people dont realize it but our emotions play a lot in our eating habits.
If we are feeling tired or down or had a bad day we tend to reach for sugary things kind of like a reward to cheer yourself up, so just put a little note on it of how you were feeling and see if there is a pattern there.
Times in which we are eating at which is also very important .. We all know how important having our breakfast is dont we? Its so very very important.
Metabolism needs to be kicked right in the butt first thing It slows down as the day goes on and by evening/night it can be very slow so eating huge portions and junk food at them times will just store as unwanted fat. So put times on your diary too.
Then when the 5-7 days are up have a read through it yourself and check for things like, did I have breakfast today?, did I snack in between meals, have I drink enough water? Have I had too much sugar in my tea/coffee (if you put the same quantity of sugar you usually put in tea/coffee into a container and at the end of the week see how full that container is or add up the tea spoons, will you be shocked??)
FYI: As an adult our recommended allowance of added sugar PER DAY IS 5 TEA SPOONS. So do the math and see how you go.
Am I getting enough of all food groups? ( fruits, meats, veggies, dairy, grains), is my diet varied?, am I following my metabolism, ie. eating a well-balanced breakfast, mid-morning snack, well balanced lunch, mid afternoon snack, and dinner. Little and often is key. This well help stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent sugar impulses.
Am I drinking enough H20?! People can suffer from mild dehydration and not even know it, if you drink a lot of tea/coffee you are at risk of mild dehydration as tea/coffee are diuretics. What this means is they can make you want to wee a lot which so you will lose a lot of fluid that needs to be replaced, so youll feel thirsty again and probably reach for more tea/coffee and then it will just do a full circle!
Your energy levels will drop also and if you train your muscles could cramp due to lack of hydration. A little tip on how to work out your recommended water intake would be to multiply your weight in kg by 0.033. This would have to be increased with activity level.
Also IF ITS NOT IN IT WONT GO IN! Everyone knows if the bad stuff isnt in the presses you cant put them in your mouth!!! So dont buy them in your weekly shopping. Simples!
Continued recording of a food diary will help you maintain your healthy lifestyle.
Give it a try and see how you get on. And be completely honest with everything youll be codding none but yourself if you dont!!!
Good luck.
If any of ye reading this would like to email me your food diary to ytynan@live.com or PM my page LOL Ladies Only Lifting on Facebook Ill give you some feedback on it..
Next week I will talk about our BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), a very effective tool in fat loss.
Thank you for reading..

Popular weight-loss surgery linked to alcohol problems – CBS News

Within seven years of having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight-loss surgery, 1 in 5 developed an alcohol problem.

After a popular type of weight-loss surgery, nearly 21 percent of patients develop a drinking problem, sometimes years later, researchers report.
The researchers followed more than 2,000 patients who had weight-loss surgery at 10 hospitals across the United States.
Over seven years, more than 1 in 5 who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight-loss surgery developed a problem such as alcohol abuse or alcoholism, compared with around 11 percent of those who underwent gastric banding.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a surgical procedure that significantly reduces the size of the stomach and changes connections with the small intestine. Gastric banding, another weight-loss option, involves placing an adjustable band around the stomach to reduce the amount of food it can hold.
In recent years, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass has become more popular than gastric banding because it leads to greater weight loss, according to the study authors.
They said their findings indicate that weight-loss (bariatric) surgery patients should receive long-term follow-up to watch for and treat drinking problems.
The study results were published online May 15 in the journalSurgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.
"We knew there was an increase in the number of people experiencing problems with alcohol within the first two years of surgery, but we didn't expect the number of affected patients to continue to grow throughout seven years of follow-up," said study author Wendy King. She's an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health.

"Because alcohol problems may not appear for several years, it is important that doctors routinely ask patients with a history of bariatric surgery about their alcohol consumption and whether they are experiencing symptoms of alcohol use disorder, and are prepared to refer them to treatment," King said in a journal news release.
The study doesn't actually prove that Roux-en-Y leads to alcohol abuse. However, other studies have shown that compared to banding, it's associated with higher and quicker elevation of alcohol in the blood, the researchers said.
Moreover, some animal research has suggested that Roux-en-Y may affect areas of the brain associated with reward, possibly increasing alcohol reward sensitivity, the researchers noted.
Although Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients were nearly four times more likely than gastric banding patients to say they'd received treatment for substance abuse, few study participants said they'd undergone such treatment, the researchers found.
Overall, 3.5 percent of the Roux-en-Y patients reported getting substance abuse treatment, far less than the nearly 21 percent who reported alcohol problems.
"This indicates that treatment programs are underutilized by bariatric surgery patients with alcohol problems," King said. "That's particularly troubling, given the availability of effective treatments."

When Jessica Battle graduated high school at 225 lbs., she had a slew of unhealthy eating habits. I honestly would eat a king size candy bar every single day for a two year period of my life, she reveals in this weeks issue of PEOPLE. Looking back, that was just what was normal for me, snacking all the time.
I have distinct memories of people telling me Oh,youd be so pretty if youd just lose 50 lbs., recalls the 30-year-old paralegal, who is also known on Instagram by her maiden name, Jessica Metzger . I remember telling myself I was happy who I am, I was happy this way. I would tell myself positive things, but deep down inside I wasnt the best version of myself. Battle says she got more than a dozen tattoos to as a way to make myself feel pretty. She adds, I dated a few guys who definitely didnt treat me right, and I felt taken advantage of by friends.
By the time Battle was 20, she tipped the scales at 280 lbs. But when she was about 25, her father had heart surgery. It was really an eye-opener for me to see someone so close to me go through such a severe surgery, she says. Seeing those health issues really scared me.
Her first step to getting healthy was heading to her local superstore to buy workout DVDs, and starting to exercise 4-5 times a week. I knew that doing some form of movement in my living room was better than nothing, says Battle, who lives in Claymont, Delaware. I had no idea what I would be doing in a gym, and I was completely intimidated by being around people at that size. I did Tae Bo for a couple months, then moved on to different workouts that involved weight training I still work out in my living room to this day.
Battle also used My Fitness Pal to keep track of her portions. Instead of eating an entire frozen pizza, I ate one slice of frozen pizza, she says. I knew that jumping right into clean eating and only vegetables and fruits and lean proteins wasnt going to work for me. Now, she counts her macros, the amounts of protein, fats and carbs that she eats each day, and weighs her food diligently. Its tedious, and its not always fun, she says. I even have a food scale at work People make fun of me all the time, but I know that to get the results I want, I have to make it a habit.

After losing about 60 lbs., she started her Instagram account, @join_jessica_xo, as a way to hold herself accountable during her weight loss journey. About 197,000 followers later, Battle is aware of the power of her influence. I try to be raw, she says. Im honest about the struggles I think that women really appreciate that because a lot of time people who share their story only share the ups. Im very willing to share the downs in my journey because I know it makes people feel theyre not alone. Were all human.
Battle met her now husband online after losing 100 lbs., and proudly posted her before photos on her profile. Women who have lost asignificant amount of weight obviously dont look like women who have always been thin. I wanted people to know what Ive been through. Going through extreme weight gain, your skin stretches I definitely have some loose skin on my body. I definitely have stretch marks everywhere. Im not completely fit. I dont look like a fitness model [when Im] undressed. I wanted somebody that was going to be dating me to realize that. They married this past March in the Dominican Republic. I felt absolutely beautiful on my wedding day, she says. I know that all of my hard work getting to this point has paid off. Its definitely worth it.
These days, The best compliment that my husband gives me is when he tells me that Im strong, she says. He is 64 and 265 pounds of pure muscle, so for a man like that to tell me that Im strong is No. 1 in my book.

Using Social Media For Weight Loss With Weight Watchers – POPSUGAR
Posted: May 18, 2017 at 2:44 pm
The Power of Social Media Fueled This Woman to Weight-Loss Success
One of the best things about Weight Watchers is the sense of community it provides its members. That is something that member Ginger Nix knows well, as she used Weight Watchers as a driving force behind her weight-loss journey. Also contributing to her success? Her massive Instagram following, which keeps her motivated day in and day out. Keep reading to hear from Ginger herself just how she has handled her 54-pound weight loss over the past few years and what her tips and tricks are for life and especially for vacation.
POPSUGAR: How much weight have you lost? How long did it take to lose it?
Ginger Nix: I've lost 55 pounds over the course of four years and multiple pregnancies!
PS: How did you do it?
GN: I did it with the Weight Watchers SmartPoints program and the Weight Watchers Instagram community.
PS: Did you only focus on diet or did you include exercise too? If so, how much/what kind?
GN: At first I solely focused on eating healthy foods and appropriate portions, but the longer I was on the Weight Watchers plan, the more exercise I incorporated. Two years ago I found a local Zumba class that has changed exercise from drudgery to "dance time" and now I'm addicted.
PS: Can you provide an example of what you ate in a day and include points?
GN: I eat so much good food I'd be happy to share!
Breakfast might be something like two pan-fried eggs for two SmartPoints and a piece of low-calorie bread for one point. (5 SP total)
Midmorning snack could be yogurt for two points topped with some berries for zero points. (2 SP total)
Lunch is usually a light [snack] with some protein; I like wrapping crisp asparagus with a couple of ounces of roast beef lined with a Laughing Cow cheese wedge for four points and then having a side of crudits for zero points with two tablespoons Opa Feta Dill dressing for a point and some crackers for two points (7 SP total).
And the afternoons I almost always have iced coffee mixed with a Premier Protein Shake for two points and a banana, which is zero points. (2 SP total).
Dinner is a family affair in my house, so I might make homemade pizzas on Flatout wraps, a casserole from the Daily Dose of Pepper website, or some turkey burgers from Skinnytaste.com. I enjoy being creative in the kitchen, but I seriously wouldn't have been able to make it very long without utilizing these ladies' amazing recipes! Dinner is typically 10 to 12 SmartPoints.
I love ice cream and will often fit some kind of high-protein, low-fat ice cream into my day. My favorite right now is the peanut butter ice cream by Enlightened. It has legit peanut butter ribbons running through it and is only three SmartPoints for half a cup!
PS: What kept you motivated on your journey?
GN: I want to be a fit mom. I want to be able to play with my kids at the park, not just watch them from a bench. I want to feel like I belong on my handsome husband's arm (he's so handsome!), and I wanted to stop hiding behind the weight. These are just a couple of hundreds of reasons why I've been working at this for literally hundreds of days, but these are ones that I come back to most often!
PS: What do you like about Weight Watchers? Why was it so successful for you?
GN: What I love about Weight Watchers is that it gives you an action plan, a plan that can be tailored to your life in a community that supports you every step of the way. It's also educational; I was surprised how uneducated I really was on nutrition.
PS: What are your tips for newbies trying out Weight Watchers?
GN: For anybody just joining, I would tell them to go to meetings if they have one in their area; going to the meetings keeps you accountable and gives you an instant community of people to ask questions of. There will be weeks that are difficult, and that support system of people who understand the struggle and have been there is priceless.
PS: How have you been able to keep the weight off? Are you still following Weight Watchers now?
GN: I am still on Weight Watchers and I am still working the plan! I think I will use the nutritional education I've gained from being a long-time member indefinitely. You can't unlearn the learnings SmartPoints provide, and now that I am more knowledgeable, I want to pass along my healthy lifestyle to my kids. I have some more weight to lose to be the fittest version of me and the healthiest mom I can be for my kids and I know with my Weight Watchers community I will get there eventually, even if it is at a turtle's pace!
PS: It looks like you're a big Disney fan. What are your tips for keeping healthy while you're at Disney or on vacation in general? GN: Don't forget that you're on vacation! Part of making Weight Watchers a lifestyle and not a diet is knowing that there are going to be times in your life where you aren't going to track every morsel that you eat for me this is vacation. That being said, there are ways that you can make sure you don't unravel all of your progress in just a couple days.
Tip #1: Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk, don't take the tram, avoid any people-mover type options and get after those step goals!
Tip #2: Don't drink anything but water unless it's a specialty beverage (read: #worthit). You can get Coke and mixed drinks anywhere, but stick to water to keep yourself hydrated and choose to chew your calories!
Tip #3: Share EVERYTHING! The portions at Disney World and Disneyland are always huge, so consider ordering an appetizer and an entree and splitting it with somebody so you get to taste a little bit of this and a little bit of that while also cutting your calorie intake in half! My hubby and I love sharing an entree and a dessert because the desserts always look to die for, but neither of us needs the whole thing. Other tips that have been useful for me have been trying to make healthy choices at two out of your three meals. Meaning, maybe at breakfast you have an egg-white omelette and fruit and at lunch you choose a salad, but at dinner you have those fish and chips that you've been smelling all day while trekking through the park.
PS: How did you use the power of social media on your weight-loss journey?
GN: My Instagram community has been a game changer for me. I post all my food so I'm accountable for my decisions; there's no secret eating anymore! There also have been times where this struggle just felt too hard and I wanted to quit. But I would never quit on my friends and followers, so without them even knowing it, they've kept me on plan through the hardest of days. Hearing about their struggles and how they have fought through them is also so inspiring; it really makes you feel like you're part of the team and that you're on the journey together.

Controversial weight-loss procedure offered at University of Colorado Hospital – FOX31 Denver

Please enable Javascript to watch this video
AURORA, Colo. -- A new Food and Drug Administration-approved weight-loss procedure is available at University of Colorado Hospital.
It is controversial, and some might find it a little gross, but the doctor and patients say it works.
Dr. Shelby Sullivan is the director of the Gastroenterology Metabolic and Bariatric program at the hospitaland is offering the AspireAssist weight-loss procedure.
She was involved with the clinical trials and believes this is a good option for patients wanting to lose 50 to 200 pounds of excess weight.
But she knows its controversial.
Absolutely, it's controversial, and I understand that, she said.
Sullivan said it basically works like a reverse feeding tube.
A port is placed on the skin that is secured to a tube inside the stomach. About 20 minutes after most meals, the patient opens the port, connects the tube and siphons about 30 percent of the undigested food from the stomach into a toilet.
The process takes about 10 minutes and is less invasive than bariatric surgery. Its also reversible.
It allows them to really be successful long term, especially when you have somebody that has a lot of weight to lose, Sullivan said.
Eric Wilcoxon is a patient from Missouri who participated in the clinical trials with Sullivan and still uses AspireAssist.
He weighed 409 pounds and knew he wanted to take action. So he decided to try AspireAssist.
Its novel concept, but it works, he said.
Wilcoxon said he lost about 75 pounds in the first six months and has lost about 150 pounds total.
He and Sullivan said there are lots of misconceptions they have to deal with. The biggest one is you can eat whatever you want, that you can splurge and purge.
But both say that is not the case.
The only way that you are going to be able to get good aspiration is if you chew your food up into little teeny, tiny pieces. Really, they have to be less than 5 millimeters or less than a quarter of an inch in order to fit through the tube. And then you have to drink a lot of water with your meals, Sullivan said.
She said mealtime behaviors change. Patients eat less and improve their food choices, and that accounts for about 50 percent of the weight loss.
She also said this is a low-risk therapy with no connection to eating disorders.
For Wilcoxon, its an option that has worked, and something he can use long term.
The obesity will kill you, thats all there is to it. If I can live longer because of this, then Ill live with it, I mean it works, he said.
AspireAssist is currently not covered by insurance.

Quick weight loss diets linked to long term heart issues – KWTX
Posted: May 18, 2017 at 2:44 pm
Waco Medical surveys show a correlation between quick weight loss diets and long term heart damage.
Summer is almost here, and some may be looking for last minute ways to shed unwanted weight, but studies show many trendy diets yo-yo weight, sometimes causing long term damage to the heart and other organs.
It took you years to put this weight on, its not going to come off in five minutes, Nurse Tracy Kramer said.
Every day I can guarantee you, I have a patient that comes in wanting to lose weight and needs to lose it fast, Kramer said.
They're tired of being big and they want the magic pill or the magic shot to get it done, and the really isn't one
She said dramatic weight loss from unhealthy diets causes long term heart damage, increases cholesterol, improves your chances for developing diabetes and even could result in you gaining extra weight in the future.
Kramer recommends traditional weight loss methods.
Small portions, portion control, doing exercise 30 minutes a day where you get your heart rate up and having a calorie intake of around 1200 a day, Kramer said.
Doctors also recommend replacing sugary drinks with fruit infused water.
Kramer also recommends getting a partner to keep your workouts and diet on track.

A Diet For Coffee Lovers – Beliefnet

The world runs on coffee. We drink it in the morning for a quick energy boost, and often throughout the day as we work, socialize, and relax. Its a miracle substance that helps us stay alert and focused, even when were overworked and underslept. Its the top agricultural export for a number of countries, and over 500 billion cups of the stuff is consumed each year.
But did you know that it might just be able to help you lose weight, as well?
Coffee is more than just flavored waterkeep in mind that this is a drink derived from the berries of the Coffea plant, which is full of nutrients and compounds that make it into your cup! These compounds affect everything from your neurotransmitters to your hormone levels to your metabolism, and if you drink your coffee just right, can help speed you toward your weight loss goals.
Lets take a look at the weight-loss benefits of coffee, and how you can take advantage of these properties to start the process of slimming down.
Numerous studies show that drinking caffeinated coffee can help you not only lose weight, but keep it off, as well. This is because coffee suppresses the source of all weight gainthe desire to eat!
According to Mayo Clinic nutritionist, Katherine Zeratsky, caffeine suppresses hunger, but the effects dont last long. This means that a small cup of joe is the perfect antidote to those sudden cravings for snack foods and high-calorie meals. Used strategically, coffee can help you through a low-calorie diet by keeping those hunger pangs at bay at key moments.
Coffee can also give you an energy boost while dieting, helping you to feel energized rather than tired. Cutting calories can make us feel lethargic and unhappycoffee helps offset this by stimulating the brain to produce pleasure-causing chemicals.
And did you know that one serving of a caffeinated drink can raise your metabolism by as much as 8 percent, which equates to burning, approximately, an extra 174 calories per day? One study shows just this.
Your metabolism is simply the overall chemical processes which occur within your body. Here, were talking about how many calories your body expends on a daily basis. When you safely speed up your metabolism through external meanswith coffee, in this caseyou increase those outgoing calories.
Adding coffee to your day, as part of a healthy, low-calorie diet, can make losing weight so much easier, so take advantage of the power of this dark liquid!
The benefits of coffee extend beyond diet and into your exercise routine!
According to Maik Wiedenbach, owner of New Yorks Adlertraining, coffee is a powerful anti-oxidant, which is important for your recover from exercise and overall immune health. Also, coffee mobilizes free fatty acids, which can then be oxidized during exercises. So, not only does coffee help you keep going during a long stay at the gym, but it helps you recover faster afterward. Thats a win-win.
Drinking about the equivalent of a medium Americano before working out also stimulates thermogenesisthe bodys way of making heat and energy from digested food. This can cause you to burn a few extra calories as you exercise.
Aerobic exercise is the best way to begin dropping pounds, so use that caffeinated energy to jog, climb, or swim your way to fitness. This is where coffee really shinesexercises that require endurance will benefit most from caffeines energy boosting power.
So, with coffee giving you an edge in the gym or on the track, why not add it to your diet?
Now that you know the benefits of coffee, lets look at how you can integrate it into your weight-loss plan!
For the best results, you want a sustainable, long-term diet plan that uses coffee to curb cravings, boost exercise benefits, and enhance metabolism.
This is more of a lifestyle than a diet, and involves cutting down calories just enough so that you consistently lose weight over a long period of time. To do this, downsize your portions until youre eating 300-500 fewer calories per day than what you need. Most people need around 2,000 calories a day to maintain their current weight, but your exact threshold may vary, so dont be afraid to experiment!
What your diet is composed of is also vitalyoure going to need lots of protein and fiber to help you feel full and build lean muscle. Youre also going to need the nutrients of leafy, green vegetables, so try steaming some broccoli and kale, for example.
Integrate coffee into this diet by having a cup between breakfast and lunch, and between lunch and dinner, to stave off hunger and to keep you feeling great. Because your calories arent drastically cut in this kind of diet, you shouldnt feel tired or worn out, but if you do, a quick cup twice a day will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.

Single tablet can lead to 2st 6ld weight loss in four months, research suggests – The Independent
Posted: May 18, 2017 at 2:44 pm
A swallowable balloon which makes people feel full can lead to dramatic weight loss in just four months, research suggests.
Obese people lost an average of 2st 6lb over 16 weeks, a study found, with experts suggesting the technique could be used as an alternative to drastic weight-loss surgery.
The Elipse Balloon is contained inside a capsule which is swallowed with a drink of water. The capsule is attached to a hollow plastic tube.
A doctor uses imaging to check the balloon is correctly in place before filling it up, via the tube, with almost a pint of water. The tube is then detached and removed.
After 16 weeks, a valve disintegrates and the device is excreted safely by the body.
In the new study presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Porto, Portugal, the balloon was given to 42 obese people (29 men and 13 women).
They were typically aged 46, had a body mass index (BMI) of 39 and weighed just over 17st on average.
After 16 weeks, typical weight loss per person was 2st 6lb and people lost more than 14 per centof their total body weight (around a third of their excess weight).
The balloon, which costs around 3,400, is available in several countries around the world and privately in the UK. The NHS is investigating similar methods.

Dr Roberta Ienca, from the University of Rome, who led the study, said: The reaction of patients is incredible. They are very happy about the results they were able to achieve.
During my daily phone contacts with my patients, they shared with me their pictures and the amount of weight they lost.
She said people were very satisfied with the results. Work was also carried out with patients on changing their eating habits long-term, she said.
Professor Jason Halford, treasurer of the European Association for the Study of Obesity, from the University of Liverpool, said the device helped people manage their appetite and modify their food intake.
In that context, it could be a solution for people who don't want to go for full bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, he said.
With bariatric surgery, there are potential complications, it's a very permanent change in your life and it's not easily reversible.
People are looking for alternatives.
He said the balloon could also provide an alternative to anti-obesity drugs and may be useful for people who have found that drugs do not work.
He said potentially millions could benefit on the NHS, though clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), which control large chunks of NHS funds, would need to be willing to pay for them.
I think if studies are there and it's cost-effective ... I think it should be considered (on the NHS), he said.
Dr Simon Cork, from Imperial College London, warned that patients were likely to regain weight once the balloon was removed.
Nevertheless, gastric balloons are still useful for some patients, and the introduction of a device which doesn't require surgery to implant is a positive step forward, he said.
