Weight loss encompasses more than eating less – Maryville Daily Times

There are seemingly dozens of ways to lose weight. The obvious ways are to eat better, exercise more and generally live a healthier overall lifestyle. Doing so isnt as easy as it may sound. If it was, we wouldnt be looking at a nationwide obesity epidemic.

Right now, the majority of adults in the United States are overweight or obese, which increases the likelihood of developing several diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. As a result of these increasing health concerns, many adults strive to lose weight. But despite the availability of weight loss programs, achieving and maintaining weight loss is difficult for many people.

Blount Memorial registered dietitian Chelsi Cardoso says achieving lasting weight loss requires some understanding.

Our weight is a reflection of our energy balance calories in versus calories out, she said. Weight loss occurs when we consume fewer calories than we burn or when we achieve a calorie deficit. This equation sounds simple, but the complicated part is that we need to make lifestyle changes in order to achieve a calorie deficit. People who have successfully lost weight are prone to certain traits and tasks. For starters, they reduce their caloric intake by 500 to 1,000 calories a day to assist with a slow, steady weight loss of one to two pounds a week. This can be done with virtually any type of diet. Next, they engage in 60 to 90 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity five times per week. They also limit television viewing to less than 10 hours each week, as well as track their food and drink intake daily and measure their body weight at least once per week, she explained. The trick for people trying to lose weight is figuring out how to apply these changes to their everyday routines.

Cardoso says there are three key steps to begin trying to lose weight.

First, you want to begin tracking your current eating and physical activity, Cardoso said. This will allow you to see what adjustments you need to make to achieve your weight loss goals. Second, you really should evaluate and examine those goals. Remember, this is about changing your behaviors, so you need to design and customize your goals in ways that make them more achievable. Part of this includes positive thinking. Instead of saying I will stop eating so much, be more positive by saying I will plan dinner menus with no more than 500 calories. Instead of saying I will get more physical activity, lock yourself into a specific time by saying I will walk 20 minutes on Tuesday after work. This also involves setting goals that are realistic and reachable. Instead of saying I will never eat fast food again, try I will decrease the number of times I eat fast food from four times a month to just two times a month, she explained. Time frame is important, too, so its critical not to be too vague or open-ended. Dont say I will lose two pounds, say I will lose two pounds by June 15.

The third key step, Cardoso says, is finding the right plan for your needs.

Come up with a plan to help you achieve your goals, she said. Achieving a healthy weight is more than following fad diets and changing what is in your cupboard. Its about making lifestyle changes and sustaining those changes over time. Do a little research to find a plan thats right for you, and talk with your health care provider or a registered dietitian if you have questions or need some guidance.

Couple Who Met at the Gym and Lost a Combined 578 Lbs. to Wed – PEOPLE.com

The couple who sweats together, stays together.

Ronnie Brower was a regular at his Syracuse, New York gym, and on his way to losing 458 lbs. after reaching a high weight at 675 lbs. Little did he know, he had a fan in gym-goer Andrea Masella, who was on a major weight loss journey of her own.

I was just really inspired by him and I thought he was super cute, Masella, 24, told the Associated Press. We started talking at the gym and I hate to sound clich but it was love at first sight.

Now, after losing a combined 578 lbs., Brower and Masella are set to tie the knot on Saturday.

Brower hit 675 lbs. in 2013, and started working out with a trainer at the insistence of a friend.

I was depressed, addicted to pills and alcohol, eating 10 double cheeseburgers or two large pizzas at a time, Brower, 32, said. My turning point was, my doctor told me if I kept on like this Id be dead before I was 30. I was 28.

With the help of trainer Nick Murphy, who will be Browers best man, he cut out drugs and alcohol, started a low-carb diet and began working out three times a day at home. After 100 days, he had lost 100 lbs., and was able to start going to the gym.

My job 24 hours a day was to get healthy and save my life, Brower said.

Masella first saw Brower almost two years after he started losing weight. At that point, she was a year into her own journey, was working her way to eventually losing 120 lbs. from her top weight of 250 lbs.

Their first date was a few games of ping pong and basketball at where else the gym. They hit it off from their shared experiences.

Both of us had used food as a coping mechanism; I would just eat my feelings, Masella said. Weve gone through a lot of counseling to come to terms with that and change.

She also stood by him as Brower underwent four surgeries to remove 30 lbs. of excess skin.

Now the couple, who laugh all the time, Brower said, is ready to get married and move in together, while staying the course with their weight loss.

People come to me all the time, asking for weight-loss advice, Brower said. I just tell them theres hope out there. If you want it bad enough and put your mind to it, anybody can do it.

Fashion Editor Andr Leon Talley Opens Up About Losing 34 Lbs. at Weight Loss Center – PEOPLE.com

Andr Leon Talley is looking good!

The fashion guru, 68, who says he struggles with a food addicition, slimmed down recently at a weight loss center.

Its been an emotional journey for a very long time about a decade I live with it every day, hetells PEOPLE of his addiction.

But now theVogue contributing editor is down 34 lbs. after a stay at Duke Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, North Carolina.

I spent Thanksgiving and Christmas there, Talley says. In the past, Ive had terrible challenges around the holidays, so this year I decided to go there.

He spent time on and off for six weeks at the residential medical weight loss program taking nutritionand fitness classes and examining his relationship with food.

Working one-on-one with the fashion icon was the centers director Dr. Will Yancy. Hes like a magnet, people just want to come and sit and talk with him, Yancy says.

This wasnt Talleys first visit to the clinic. He says the camaraderie of the centeris part of what keeps him coming back. Its a very encouraging environment, he says, although he admits it can be hard to get into the mindset at first. The experience for me is always very daunting in the beginning. You certainly have to reboot your skills in weight-loss and I think its one of the best places to do that.

Nutrition Director Elisabetta Politi has been at the center 20 years and has worked with Talley several times. When people carry excess weight they tend to isolate themselves a little bit, she says. I realized he was spending many evenings at home watching tv and it was not uncommon for him to eat sweets while he was watching tv. I think coming here this time helped him to break that vicious cycle.

Yancy confirmed the importance of workouts in Talleys case.Hehadnt been exercising a lot before he got here so just getting him moving again was critical, says Yancy.

Talley says hes keeping the weight off by foregoing some of his favorite treats.

I had to cut out ice cream and desserts, pie, cakes and cookies. I dont keep those things in the house, he says. Its very tough with my lifestyle. I have learned to avoid the temptations.

He explains further: Food addiction is a very serious thing and I try not to get so stressed out. Now though, if Im stressed, I dont go to the trigger foods anymore.

He also says it helps that he stays in touch with the doctor and the nutritionist he worked with at Duke, since he thinks so highly of the center.

The feeling is mutual among the doctors there. He is extremely humble, very approachable and fun to be with, says Yancy. He treats everyone the same way, from the housekeeping staff and the waiters to the doctors. He just enjoys talking to people. And women love to ask him what to wear.

And on that subject of fashion, Talley says hes never faced any criticism from his stylish peersas he has struggled with the scale.

There is no bullying about my weight, he says. The fashion world has accepted me and they keep me there for my knowledge, not my looks.

Loose Women fans’ anger as ‘weight loss tablet’ advert follows discussion with Gok Wan about eating disorders – The Sun

LOOSE Women viewers were furious after an advert for weight loss tablets appeared after a discussion about eating disorders.

Gok Wan and Freddie Flintoff were guests on Fridays panel and both gave emotional interviews about their body battles.

However when the interview came to an end and Andrea went to a break, fans were left upset as they saw a promotion for XLS-Medical.

The tablets are billed as a leading weight loss tablet and claim they can help people lose up to three times more weight than just dieting alone.

They went online to express their upset at bad timing of the advert following the emotional segment.

One commented: @loosewomen Following Gok Wan and Freddies moving story about eating disorders. Was shocked first advert was diet pills on sale.

Another wrote: So @loosewomen are talking about #bodyimage, they go to ad break- 1st ad is for weight loss pills.

Gok and Freddies frank and candid interviews were praised however as the pair opened up about their own personal battles.

TV stylist Gok suffered from anorexia when he was younger and admitted he used to live off just two spoonfuls of honey every day.

He said: My eating disorder started when I went to drama school. I looked around me and everyone was this big and beautiful and I was this big oaf and I remember feeling reallythis isnt right.

I started dieting and controlled my food intake. I still have my food diary from that time.

I reduced my meals down to two teaspoons of honey every day. I could go to college in the morning and then go to work in the evening. Of course I couldnt and I was exhaustedbut for me it was all about the control.

Meanwhile former England cricket star Freddie spoke about his battle with bulimia.

Freddie explained: I was overweight as a sportsman but I knew I had to lose weight, I wasnt fit and I wasnt hitting my targets.

I wanted a quick fix. Id go out, have a couple of pints and a kebab then Id make myself sick.

It sounds daft it started becoming more regular. I ate decent food and Id do it. I came off from the cricket pitch, eat my lunch and then throw up and go back onto the pitch.
